Hey gang!

Today's paper is actually a letter to the editors, meaning it is short, sweet, and not actually an experiment.

It's about the idea of vestibular sensation (balance) and lateralization (things like handedness, and which side of your brain does what). The authors do a lot of vestibular sensation research, and they propose in this letter that vestibular sensation and lateralized functions like handedness develop separately, but interact with each other.

Here's the idea: the right side of your body is controlled by the left side of your brain, while the left side of your body is controlled by the right side of your brain. HOWEVER: in right-handed people, the RIGHT side of their brain is more dominant in vestibular sensation than the left-- and vice versa for left-handed people.

So these things that are both lateralized AND both involved in things like movement and spatial orientation are opposite of each other. Why? The authors think that vestibular sensation may play a role in shaping handedness, since you develop your sense of balance before you pick a dominant hand. Crazy!

This one is absolutely worth a read, I would say.

(P.S.: anybody who says "your right brain is creative" or "your left brain is calculated" or whatever else is lying to you, very few things in your brain are actually lateralized. The vast majority of stuff you do uses both hemispheres)

islamic relief worldwide's gaza emergency appeal - provides food, water, hygiene kits, medical supplies, and psychological support

baitulmaal - provides a variety of necessities, including food, water, shelter, and medical supplies

gaza mutual aid fund - distributes food, hygiene products, water, and other essential supplies, including financial support. run by @/el-shab-hussein's amazing friend Mona. updates can be found on her instagram.

hygiene kits for gaza - provides hygiene supplies including menstrual products, wipes, and toothbrushes/toothpaste

anera - provides a variety of necessities, including food, water, hygiene supplies, medicine, blankets and mattresses, and psychological care

palestine children's relief fund - provides supplies and support with a focus on children. also has an initiative for lebanon

dahnoun mutual aid - provides water, food, tents, baby supplies, financial support, and other necessities. updates can be found through their instagram

certainly this is not an exhaustive list, so please feel free to add on other projects or organizations that i didn't include. and as always, please take the time to donate if you can and share. it truly makes all the difference.

my day job is at a college, and this morning my boss was like "go collect all the suggestion slips from our suggestion boxes around the school and create a document and a spreadsheet outlining the needs of the student body."

Ok cool very easy! fun, even!

there were two. two suggestions.

"spring fling should be steampunk themed :3 I'd like to see more pipes and gears with no discernible function"

and

"free food. starbocks. privitized resturaunts."

I can't wait to turn in my 1/8th page report with "pipes and gears with no discernible function" and three out of five words misspelled on it. the students have spoken, boss; such are the needs of the student body.
