I've been learning Unity on the learn Unity website. It's pretty cool Unity has so many free tutorials. I'm doing the Create with Code course right now cause I wanna help with coding on the game my pals and I are making. I wanted to learn how to code in college but my school was pretty much completely art-based so there wasn't any classes, sadly. Big L. But now I get to learn on my own and hopefully get a decent handle on building scripts and setting up game objects to help with the game.

We're gonna make a 2.5D dark fantasy merfolk survial rpg. It's gonna be so cool! There's gonna be a bunch of different mer species and crazy underwater monsters! We're also a bunch of neurodivergent nerds, so theres gonna be a bunch of references and wacky characters. My favorite so far is a bubbly seahorse mer dude who's a merchant and pregos. There's also a shark knight whose story is turning out to be so tragic. There's also a seal Selkie outcast that wants to be a mer, so they only wear half their skin.

The team also wants to have little collectible animal companions to travel with. A small shark, maybe a sand shark. Probably an eel. Not totally sure yet, we haven't made a list of them all yet.

So pretty cool, right? The team and I think so at least!

Hey, do you like video games?

Then you should be mad at Unity right now! They are threatening the entire gamedev industry by making sudden new rules about how they charge. This threat is serious and literally could cripple the gaming industry. As an example, the devs of Cult of the Lamb have already said they will remove their game from all stores when the new Unity rules go into place, and I doubt they are the only ones. They will HAVE to do that to protect themselves financially, they are not overreacting. There may still be time to stop Unity, either through public outcry, or legal action, but we need to spread the word.

Here is a list of games on Steam that were made with Unity and therefore could be effected by this. I'll put some of them in the tags, but it's honestly overwhelming.

Unity's behavior is embarrassingly greedy. Clearly trying to brute force their way into skimming revenue from every mobile game on the market -> pushing their adware onto every piece of software. It's been really disheartening to see every game development software company demand exponentially more profit the past few years. Especially since it comes at the expense of scaring away blossoming developers...

If you haven't learned to make games, but plan to - use something open source like GODOT, or at least an old version of RPG maker with a one-time purchase of a license.

If the owner of the IDE you're using would be legally within their rights to do what Unity is doing now you should assume that they will do it eventually too.

kind of want to be insane and start making weird short games based on a convoluted fantasy setting with almost incomprehensible lore. like i think this would fix me.

did some things to my copy of hades II

guys it turns out the local files of hades ii (and probably hades i) are very easily editable even if you suck at coding. straight up lua files in there. edit that model scale factor from 1.3 to 8 and play with canonically accurate god sizes. make it so polyphemus can't do anything besides hop around. make melinoe baby size. the world is your oyster. i also made Eris suck at fighting because I hate her <3

Hi there, game dev student here!

Thought I'd share how much of a clusterfuck this is from our perspective and what the unity debacle will mean for us in the long run.

My classmates and I are about to enter our final year at uni, and we now have years of experience using the weewee capitalism engine. Now I should probably mention that we are SOUTH AFRICAN and most of us were planning on leaving the very second we could after graduation. This is now going to be......... way harder!!!!!

Not only is it going to be nearly impossible to switch engines in our final year, but now we are going to have a big red pimple on our CVs that specifically says UNITY once we're done.

Is it impossible to be hired due to this? Of course not, plenty of studios use their own engines that require training anyway. However, ITS STILL GONNA SUCK MEGA DICK.

Unity has just made the lives of a bunch of nerds who just want to immigrate significantly harder, and I for one am absolutely dreading what this will mean for the future.
