Hey! :) I’ve really been wanting to get into reading comics but I have no idea where to start 🥲

Do you have any recommendations or references for how to start reading about different dc characters? I mainly want to start reading about batman and the rest of his clan but I want to branch out to other characters as well

hi!! i've gotten this question a lot and i'm so sorry it's taken me so long to answer all of y'all! but i wanted to make sure if i made a list, it would be with the best references i could find, and that it made sense for even a beginner

what i've found is that... there's apparently no right answer? mostly, you'll find people recommending you to start with their favorite collections, like Batman: Hush, etc etc. from what i've been able to tell, getting into comics is about choosing one that sounds the most interesting to you, and going from there. if you like the collection you've picked up, then someone will recommend another collection, so on. a lot of people recommend that you start with a certain character, someone that you really like. so if Tim Drake is calling to you like many... many people, then you can find a reading guide for him and pick and choose from a collection. like this one from this blogger that helped me. one of my favorite characters is Cassandra Cain (though I don't write her as often, which kind of happens when I really like a character?). she has a Batgirl run!! Batgirl #1. (((please note that this link takes you to readallcomics.com, which you should use an adblocker for if you want to use this website. however!! it is very different from readcomics.com))) look how cool she is!!

however I personally like to try and read in chronological order because I don't like missing out on anything. in my search, i found an amazingly ordered, extensive website called comicbookherald.com

i started using this because they have a list in chronological order for many, many, many characters in the DC universe:

one of the very first options on this list is Batman (listed in alphabetical), and when you click on him, you'll find exactly what you're looking for:

the links on the actual titles in the list will take you to Amazon to buy the comic, but there are other ways to find these comics either online (like seen above with Batgirl #1) or through your local library (recommended). if your library doesn't have them, you might be able to find them at a nearby one or you can ask the librarian how a request works. they'd probably be happy to get it for you (support your local libraries!!!) you might find that you prefer going to a comic shop, and that's great too

i also looked up the publication history of the Batman comics using Wikipedia, just to make sure that I knew what i was doing, and i started with the very first on the list: Detective Comics #27. this is Bruce Wayne/Batman's very first appearance.

the issue is that it's pretty hard to read all of the characters at once and stay in order, which means you'll probably want to stick to reading one character at a time and piecing it together like that. but if you're feeling brave, i'd cross reference the years and publication history and go by the order of when each character shows up: start by reading Batman, and when Dick Grayson appears, look up his list and see how the publication history looks, and i guess start trying to read them side by side? the same would go for when Jason appears, then Tim, etc etc. but this might be VERY difficult, so i am very much recommending beginners to start by reading Batman's and branch out from there

my personal favorite right now is Batman & Robin: Year One because Dick Grayson is in it and he's so cute here in his Robin days

There was simply no denying that being a college student was pretty fucking exhausting. Between your on-campus casual job, the extensive list of assignments you had racked up, and the overwhelming need to still have a social life, the circles under your eyes had become much more pronounced in the last few weeks. 

You needed your beauty sleep, or else you’d be well on your way to looking like Shrek by the end of the semester. And because you had been on the hunt to end your single streak, looking like Shrek would be the worst thing to happen. 

You giggle to yourself, the sleep deprivation clearly making you delirious. Checking your watch, you see that you had in fact been up for a whopping 28 hours. It was time for a seriously good nap. You throw your backpack onto the floor of your bedroom, tugging your sweatshirt off of you and flopping down onto your bed. The plushness engulfs you in warmth and comfort, lulling you into a deep, calming sleep, that you so desperately needed.

Or so you thought.

You wake up panting. The air around you is suffocatingly hot, and you can feel the sheets twisted uncomfortably around your legs, trapping you in the warmth. Your heart is pounding against your chest, and you slide your hand across your sternum in a futile effort to soothe yourself. 

The dream was quickly fading, and you squeeze your eyes in deep concentration, desperate to hold on to the remnants of it before they fled from your racing thoughts. 

It was hazy. But the pounding of your chest and the fluttering that accompanied made you feel like you were missing a key detail. It was right on the tip of your tongue, inching further and further away the more you search for the answers. 

You were in bed with another person. They were warm, and their laugh was enough to make you want to get down on one knee right then and there. You were cuddled up with them, the feeling of peace washing over you.

It has been a long time since you felt peace, and as you search for more clues to unearth your future love of your life, the wistfulness settles deep inside you. It mocks you, whispering into your ear that you’d never feel so lucky to be at peace with someone. 

The last of the dream fades, and you groan, throwing your arm over your face and vowing to prove your meanest, most vile inner voices wrong. 

Because, goddamn it, you did deserve to be loved. And maybe, just maybe, it would happen for you.

You go to bed that night with a fierce determination to coax your brain into revealing more, and as you settle into bed, you pop two benadryl tablets. 

‘This’ll give me some good dreams,’ you think slyly, before shutting your eyes and waiting for the next clue, sleep quickly overcoming your thoughts.

You sleep soundly, waking the next morning with a crick in your neck and long, blonde hair on your brain. 

“Holy fuck,” you whisper, your dream still playing again in your muddled brain. “It’s a girl," you say incredulously.

"Or maybe an Australian surfer dude," you say sarcastically out loud to yourself.

"God, I'm losing it," you mumble, rubbing a hand over your sleepy eyes.

Her face was blank, deluding you of figuring out who it really was, but the familiar, tinkling laughter was playing on a loop. It was making you crazy. 

Your thoughts drift back to being tangled up with lean limbs, the soft hair flowing over slim, strong shoulders and down the girl’s bare back. You recall how you had traced a line down the line of her spine, goosebumps erupting in the wake of your touch. 

She was strong and delicate, a dichotomy of perfection that had your thighs clenching in want and your heart clenching in need.

You sigh. It felt almost real, and now it was being ripped from you every time you woke up. It felt unnecessarily cruel, and tears prick your eyes as reality sets in. You were escaping to a fantasy world in your dreams to avoid the crushing forlornness that was settling deep into your bones. 

Loneliness was certainly the muse, it seemed.

You meet up with your friends later that night, searching for a distraction from the blonde hair that was currently haunting every waking moment. As you cross campus to head to Aubrey’s apartment, you scold yourself as each blonde who passes you makes you glance hopefully in their direction. 

There had to be something to jog your memory, unclouding the face you wanted nothing more to recognize. But each face elicited a disappointed pang in your stomach that spread an uncomfortable coldness through the rest of your body. 

You shake your head as you approach Aubrey’s door, trying to rid yourself of the disheartened aura you were currently giving off. 

You and Aubrey had become friends two years ago, and by extension, the rest of her team and her girlfriend had accepted you with open arms. You were looking forward to Caroline and Azzi’s wisdom and kind smiles. And KK and Ice’s laughter would certainly be a great distraction. 

Your mind gently drifts towards Paige before the door swings open with a large bang, and a loud, joyous cry erupts from the group of girls in the apartment. 

You wave at them, cheeks turning pink from the attention. You scan the room, letting your brain secretly look for Paige, just to check to see if it would trigger the flashes of your dream. 

You move towards the kitchen, joining into a heated discussion KK and Jana were having about Legos, eyes still darting around curiously.

“I’m obviously the best and fastest builder,” KK boasts, sticking her tongue out childishly at her teammate, and you giggle, taking a sip of your drink as Jana voraciously defends herself and her Lego-building abilities.

It was almost subconscious. You step back, as if you were being pulled against your will, and you hit a wall of warmth and muscle. Your heart lurches as your mind registers what was happening. 

“Damn, ma. I gotchu, don’t worry,” Paige mumbles in your ear, chuckling as you turn into a bumbling mess in her firm grasp. 

“Oh, god. I’m sorry, P,” you whisper, not trusting your full voice. You steady yourself, proud that you at least did not spill your drink. 

Her hand slides down your side to rest heavily on your waist, and her touch ignites a fire in your belly. Your breath hitches as you look up at her. Her hair is down for once, flowing across her shoulders, and your head spins as she laughs again. 

You knew that laugh.

“Never gonna complain about having to rescue a pretty girl,” she flirts, and you turn your head, not wanting her to see the way her words sent your face up in a blaze of heat. The realization hits you like a crashing wave.

Your dream was about Paige fucking Bueckers.

if we learned anything from the 815 and ana flores imdb fiascos, it's that the pre-episode cast listings are wildly unreliable and easily modified by just about anyone with an account and enough free time on their hands. i'm more inclined to believe that lfj (and gabrielle walsh #edna canon s10 trust☝️) were removed by trolls/upset fans after being added by producers than the opposite. either way, we'll only know for sure on thursday.

now personally... based on the original and alternative 817 synopses ("they try to move forward and plan for the future" + "buck contemplates where he's supposed to be") as well as lfj's interview ("post-funeral? [...] he'll show vulnerability"), i suspect we'll see tommy in both the penultimate and final episodes.

(side-note: i think the "where's he's supposed to be" bit mostly refers to buck's professional life as hinted by oliver in his march interviews, or maybe even literally, if eddie is choosing to stay in LA as soon as next episode.)

it's been extensively discussed by now, but tommy's presence in the flashback was unnecessary. i'd argue that it would've been more impactful (and circularly thematic) for chimney to pull bobby back from a near fiery death, yet the writers picked the secondary character as the savior in that scene to remind casual viewers (who might've forgotten s2 by now) that tommy served under bobby, for 3 connected reasons:

1. legitimize his role as a pallbearer

2. further integrate him in the fabric of the show

3. give more substance to the bobby-tommy relationship so that any memory or anecdote he might share with buck carries more weight and doesn't come out of left field (for the GA). i maintain that tommy's role is primarily that of a LI. in verse? his presence in the procession can be explained by his link to the 118 and specifically to bobby as his former subordinate. narratively? tommy was involved in contagion and the funeral bc of his association with buck. eventually, they must talk: tommy is the one character who witnessed buck's raw, unconcealed grief before he put on his composed mask. a setup implies a payoff.

formally speaking, reconciliation will probably happen in the finale. that's when storylines usually converge to be resolved. the end of 817 segues into the big disaster and 818 appears to be emergency heavy, with minimal room for anything beside saving the day and said resolutions. this means that any heart-to-heart buck and tommy might share (and i believe they absolutely need one before making up, short as it may be) needs to happen next episode to set the bulk of the groundwork for that end-of-season bittersweet win. and it looks like buck has the b-plot in 817, so.... 2+2=4.

Perhaps Grandpa had pulled off his own plot, in the meantime. He knew Crocker was a piece of shit too, after all, and might have been just as vengeful as Nanna.

pipefan413: The girl was finally free, by a strange turn of events. But not without a final jab from the witch. It turned out that in her will she had left the entire company to the boy!

Well, that really does make it sound like Grandpa orchestrated this.

Anyway, Grandpa’s moves would have been a lot more effective if he'd had any contact whatsoever with Nanna. I know this was long before group chats, but damn. Get a mailing list, or something. Communicate!

ELVIS GEMS

Hey, friends! So, @buglass suggested a while ago for me to share some less known (or less mentioned) Elvis songs. I guess today I felt inspiration to. Note: This is my personal selection, based on my taste and vision - not necessarily meaning all the songs are not as appreciated as they should be or that they are technically and content-wise flawless. I just think they're great for different reasons, and that they should get more plays. Oh... song 5 in this list contains wisdom for life in the lyrics and it's something that's really meaningful today as we reach Elvis' 90th birthday. Hope you enjoy this short list!

"Blue Moon"

Album: "Elvis Presley" (1956) I don't think it's that unknown but when I see people talking about the ballads E recorded, this song is not much remembered. I love it very much!

"Fool, Fool, Fool"

Recorded during a studio radio session. KDAV Radio - Jan 6, 1955. First released first in the album: "The King of Rock 'n' Roll: The Complete 50's Masters" (1992). This song is great Rock and Roll. When the guitar solo comes (0:56), it's impossible not to move.

"Dark Moon" and "Tennessee Waltz"

Album: "Elvis: The Home Recordings" (1999) Although the poor audio quality, those are songs I, particularly, get the most intense feeling of what it would be like to jam and harmonize with Elvis among, probably, all of his home/jam sessions recordings. I love to sing along with those tracks. Plus, I can always visualize E with his friends gathered around the piano he's playing... it's a plus. In "Tennessee Waltz" they mess up with the lyrics, it's annoying and fun at the same time.

"Once Is Enough" ♥

Soundtrack: "Kissin' Cousins" (1964) That song came to me randomly right now on my Spotify playlist but it fits like a glove in the mood today. I think the lyrics is pure "words of wisdom" material, and the melody is fun. And hey, it's Elvis' birthday! In this song he sings: "What's the good of reaching 90 if you waste 89? You got one life so live it If you don't it's a crime." Elvis didn't live to reach his nineties we would be celebrating with him today, but he lived quite the life in just forty-two years walking on this earth. People tend to pity on him, thinking he had such a tragic life story but, the way I see it, Elvis lived more than many of us ever will get to do. This song represents quite well the way he did things in life... not waiting 'till tomorrow, just going for it. "As a lightning-bolt" ⚡ El, you're amazing for leaving so many precious life lessons for us. We couldn't thank you enough, King. By the way, there's great gems among the soundtracks from his movies... this is just one of my favorites.This song is really a gem. ♥

"You Better Run"

First released in the album "Elvis Presley: Amazing Grace" (1994) Traditional arranged by Elvis and recorded during an informal gospel session filmed for the documentary "Elvis On Tour" (1972) on March 31, 1972 at RCA's Studio C, Hollywood.  This gospel tune was never officially recorded by Elvis, but he did sing it in concert on a few occasions. "You Better Run" was sung in a medley with "Bosom of Abraham," that's why they're quite similar in melody. Note: I love the latter song, one of my favorites by E, so "You Better Run" as similar as it is, it's like an extension but not as well known as "Bosom of Abraham" because wasn't featured in the documentary.

The footage below is composed of random scenes from "Elvis On Tour." As mentioned, the footage in which Elvis harmonizes "You Better Run" with his close friend and musician Charlie Hodge, plus JD Sumner and The Stamps Quartet didn't make it to the final cut of the 1973 music documentary and (for what I know) wasn't even released yet as an outtake. As we know, director Baz Luhrmann is working to get never-seen-before footage from Elvis' two documentaries finally out, so maybe this footage will be released in the not-far-away future. Fingers crossed.

"Almost"

Album: "Let's Be Friends" (1970) I'll never get over how sweet this song and the scene from the movie "The Trouble With Girls" in which Walter Hale (Elvis) performs it playing the piano are. I think 1:50 is way too short for such a beautiful song, it actually pissed me off how quick it ends.

"Loving Arms"

Album: "Good Times" (1974). When this song gets to 1:47 it hits hard in the soul. I just feel like crying every time (how did he do that?) Great song!

"It's Easy for You"

Master released on the album "Moody Blue" (1977), but here's the X-rated take 1 because it's so fun! This version below is on "Way Down In The Jungle Room" (2016)

"Pledging My Love"

Album: "Moody Blue" (1977). The lyrics is just so precious! "Making you happy is my desire, dear... Keeping you is my goal."

Steve really would just like love, a family maybe, and to not be stuck watching his newly married brother mooning over his new husband. And he'd rather be painting anyway, so an arranged marriage is not the worst idea. What Steve doesn't want is to be married to the strange almost barbaric King, who shows up spectacularly hungover to their wedding. Now he's alone, and scared in a place miles from anything he is used to, saddled to a King who doesn't want him.

But maybe, maybe all hope is not lost, even with the disaster their wedding turns into. Maybe, just maybe, there is something to be salvaged from the less than ideal circumstances that brought them together.

LEL That is a brilliant gif, litcherally them, thankies for sharing this peak.

And that is a brilliant thingie to talk about. I may go on about AUs just because there are many ways (whether fairly believable and canon-compliant, or just silly and casual) that Kira and Diavolo could meet, and a bunch of various ideas in the way they'd actually interact in said meeting (or beyond). But of course, that's a given for ships involving characters that are never shown to have met. I do find that huge amount of room for creativity very intriguing.

Anyway, if I were to put something at the top of what seems believable (ie, what'd seem like a natural extension to the source material, less random), it'd be post-canon Kiraboss. In their latest depictions (I'm fairly confident DMQ is canon), they're both shown to be in a very peculiar purgatory state that no other named character from what I recall is fated to, let alone among the main antagonists (they just float to the sky (die), be entirely erased, or literally stay alive on the same existential plane forever). Given that unique inherent connection between those two major characters specifically, I thus think it wouldn't be super random/casual(?) for them to... well, be connected or perhaps form some deep kinship in a hypothetical JoJo spinoff. There'd be purpose in a story like that since there'd be the opportunity to expand upon the ghost/afterlife logic in the overall JoJoverse. (Not to mention kira and boss redemption if we may sympathize with them...)

Now, if we were to go earlier so that we can have the original Kira and Diavolo as Kiraboss, they can very well meet pre-canon, maybe even be close, and their correspondence (casual or deep) wouldn't have to interrupt their main stories. But while I don't believe anything is stopping Diavolo from going to Morioh through Doppio (since I'd reckon they can travel pretty easy with mafia swag and moola), I don't know what reason he could have to do so. A super flimsy stretch I could make is Tonio Trussardi/Antonio Volpe since he is adjacent to Passione's Massimo from PHF, but obviously PHF is not very canon and you'd still have a lot of stuff to fill out to justify Diavolo's connection to Morioh, all to potentially encounter Kira. In other words, pre-canon Kiraboss may be more random than post-canon Kiraboss, at least story-wise and not just for their given (huge) list of similarities. Buuuut at least it is possible. It's a whole other thing on whether or not they'd get along. Since they have to be alive for their story to happen, they'd have to not kill each other in the pre-canon meeting instance. This is where an old fanfiction idea I had a long while back comes in...

Uhhh, I guess briefly(?) going over that (since I reckon it's as close to what my 'main idea' for what feasible kiraboss looks like), the fic was going to be called "Yoshikage Kira and Diavolo's Bizarre Backstory" and combine both of the above ideas in this post: pre-canon and post-canon Kiraboss (with focus on pre-canon). The idea for the fic would be that they both meet, develop feelings (super slow burn style), and heavily influence each other to act the way they do in canon (so that there would be a convenient difference in their behaviors between when they initially met each other vs. when they'd meet another stand user in the future separately). Basic plot was: They meet in Morioh (Kira likes Doppio/Diavolo's hands) -> Stand battle (whole thing with Diavolo initially struggling with Kira's stupid SHA, but he learns quickly) -> They form hesitant truce (Diavolo thinks Kira could be very useful, and Kira surrenders) -> They are very stubborn (Kira doesn't want to join mob, and uhh somehow Diavolo's convinced he needs him LUL) -> Insert very ambiguous kind of tsundere/tsundere relationship here, perhaps they have sex (they wouldn't be very good at it) -> Diavolo goes back to Italy and Kira never snitches -> Ensue canon and they die -> They meet again not remembering each other at all and post-canon kiraboss begins. I know I have the ability to sit down and write a proper fanfic ....but I don't feel like it as of now, just as I am with projects. :d Hell, I started that Kosaku-Doppio swap fanfiction (idea I put some time ago on this blog), and plots completely written out, but only at barely two chaps, 4.7k words. Oh yeah, I believe that old animatic I just posted on this blog too was meant to reference the fanfic concept where Kira's just yearning after Diavolo's left.

A long time ago, maybe a decade ago at this point, I looked up "how to learn to read in a language." The suggestions I ended up finding, I ended up shaping a lot of my future study plans off of - at least as a beginner.

These tips boiled down to:

Read a Grammar Guide Summary to have a generalized overview of what grammar you will see, what it means, and what grammar points you may need to look up again when reading to learn more about. (I always read these through, in a few weeks, and did not memorize. Then referenced them again when reading if I needed to figure out a particular grammar point, or found a more in depth grammar reference to use to look up stuff in depth when reading).

Look up a pronunciation guide, either a website with audio or youtube videos with audio, and listen through. (This also took a few weeks, not memorizing just going through, to get an idea of sounds in the language and things I may want to look up again later. This is also useful for making sure your mental reading 'voice' for the language is something in the range of the actual language's sounds. I neglected doing this for French until 2 years in, and then I had to do damage control and look up a bunch of pronunciation guides and listening materials to make my mental reading 'voice' something closer to actual French)

Study ~3000 common words, in sentence examples if possible, with audio if possible. (I studied anywhere from 1000 words for French in a word list with sentences I read online, to 3000 words for Japanese in memrise/anki, and the article I read with the highest suggestion was to learn the most ~9000 common words to be able to read any novel. Like with the grammar guide summary, I'd read through these words and initially 'cram study' 1000 at a time - prioritizing new study and ignoring reviews if I didn't have time, then go practice reading for a couple months to review and understand those words better in the context of what I was reading, then 'cram study' another 1000 words and instead of doing reviews I'd go back to reading, then cram study another X words if I found myself needing to 'vaguely recognize' a lot of words to understand the next thing I was interested in reading. Eventually I reached a point where bulk studying words was not useful for me, and at that point I just looked up unknown words as I read that I wanted to learn - and kept looking them up until I remembered them. And that's currently what I still do.)

Look up Graded Readers, and start reading. (I intensively read - looked up words I didn't know, or forgot the meaning of. And I extensively read - forces you to understand what you can remember, and improves reading speed).

At the point one can read some things in the language, just keep reading. (I would continue intensively reading - looking up unknown words and grammar points - if I ever wanted to learn a bunch of words 'faster' or tackle a reading material that was significantly harder than what I could handle, or I extensively read - no looking things up - stuff I could understand the main idea of. Eventually, what I could extensively read increased, and it keeps increasing as long as I keep reading things.)

It just so happens that if you follow most beginner textbooks in a class they also teach ~2000-3000 words, and many basic grammar points. Or if you use Assimil or Teach Yourself books. Or an anki deck full of common words in sentences. Or Glossika. Or The Nature Method textbooks. Sometimes beginner materials won't teach you ALL the grammar points you might want to get familiar with, so you can just look up 'grammar guide summary' online or find a good reference book or website and read for an overview on the rest of the grammar for that language. Sometimes a beginner textbook teaches a miniscule amount of words (rare, but it happens) and looking up a word list online, or an anki deck, will provide you with enough common words to start trying to read. My point with all this is: it's fairly easy to either find these resources free, or take a beginner class/material and study the information in it, needed to give you the foundation to begin reading. Once you have a 'vague familiarity' with some words and grammar, you can just start reading. You can just read, and look up words again and grammar again over and over until you remember it, and it will work. You can start reading Graded Readers as early as you're ready to try (Or even harder stuff, although the effort will be less intense if you start with easier reading material lol).

I started trying to read French within a few months of starting a French Beginner 1 class in college, because I could find a common words list and grammar guide summary online and I'd finished reading them, and wanted to try reading the news and wikipedia and some Graded Reader novels I'd found from the thrift store. So I started, and looked up words and grammar points when they were important to understanding the main idea, and I kept looking things up and kept reading. And in 6 months I could read a lot more. In 1 year I could read a lot more, and was only extensively reading at that point. I did pretty much the same strategy to learn to read Chinese (and Heavenlypath.notion.site's Comprehensive Reading Guide is quite similar to what I did, and would work well, and the same strategies could be applied to learning to read any language - I often link it because it's clearer than anything I can write, and it's a good 'learn to read' guide, like the ones I relied on so much when I was trying to figure out how to learn to read French).

1. the sete post: yeah this one i do still quite like. i haven't properly read it in a while because i'm sure a lot of it would annoy me - less new information i didn't include and more information i theoretically had access to but forgot about... but well. ig it's extensive without being exhaustive. and it's neat that something i really did think would get read by like... two people ended up having such... idk, wide reach is maybe going a bit far. i think it's had an impact beyond the note count though and it did get some people into the rivalry and then others have gone on to post stuff that IS in the mainstream consciousness so it's like. indirect influencer or something. kinda cool! also the last section i do think is actually pretty all right

2. the valentino witchcraft post: idk i do like... working on my writing skills... i think at some point in the relatively near future once key life developments have happened, it's probably going to be a good idea for me to have a blog for professional purposes, and i am a big believer in trying to be interesting in the stuff you write. which, yeah, no shit, but when i read stuff in my field, i often get frustrated at how people can write about fascinating stuff in ways that just feel... rehearsed. idk i just think it's good mental hygiene to sometimes take a bit of a left field approach to things, and this is pretty left field. i did kinda think a grand total of zero people were going to read it so i probably would've cleaned it up a bit more if i'd known slightly more than that would read it. still fun to write

3. the casey/vale similarities post: quick browsing and idt ALL of this is how i'd write it at the present point in time, but it's still the closest i ever got to writing a bit of a thesis statement on that rivalry. which is obviously very dear to me. it clears the 'saying something interesting' bar, which is all i'm really looking for. the best sections are the conspiracy section - the suspicious of structures vs individuals still pretty astute 2 me - as well as the valentino as casey's shadow section. that bit i really like, pseudoscience and all

4. the casey/vale web weave with agassi/sampras words: i had so much fun making it. i love casey/vale as a tennis-coded rivalry, i love agassi/sampras, figuring out how to have the words guide the narrative was a really fun exercise. like everything i do, it probably has too many words, given it's like. supposed to be a web weave. but tbh i don't care. lot of fun Stuff there, like you can kinda hint at conclusions you want the reader to draw through framing without using actual words. but obviously my favourite bit is 'he says i've brought out the best in him but i think he's brought out the worst in me'. obviously agassi meant it in a different way but i'm OBSESSED with that line in a casey/vale context, like idk man it's so true to them and it's soooooo... yeah

5. the jorge/vale 2008-10 post: i don't really like this one, but i respect the effort i made for it. it's the post on this list i spent by far the much work on, kinda a grind compiling the sources and wrestling them into a workable narrative... i kinda got suckered into that one because i made a vague post about how there was obviously a lot of contextual info missing about how those years actually went (including on podcasts from professionals) and i got like half a dozen asks requesting a deep dive essentially. tbh with that one specifically, idt i'd put that much effort into it now because i feel like i didn't have as much a coherent thesis statement as a desire to provide accurate information, but the thing is if you write anything longer it's very unlikely a lot of people will read it, so it's a bit.... eh. fact checking is a fool's errand anyway, it's not really worth it to think that much about how to present facts in a digestible way if you know that's... not what anyone is really here for on this website. still, i do like these posts as writing exercises, and all in all it was good as that

6. the valentino authorial hand post: this is on the opposite end of the spectrum where it's just fun. it's so up my street, like in a way it's a companion to the witchcraft post that takes the mysticism out of it and thinks practically about how valentino went about managing these rivalries. i love sports psychology, i love thinking about tactics and underlying mechanisms for sporting outcomes and all that kind of stuff, i think it's fun picking at stuff that feels like it's almost scripted, too good to be true and just... figuring out where and when valentino created his own luck. very informed by my feelings about tennis, obviously. and crucially clears the 'interesting' bar

7. toxic yuri post: yeahhhhhh again same category, this one's just like. fun. quirky analytical framework. it does work!! and it made me think a bunch about toxic yuri and like... idk i wouldn't go about theorising the genre using motorcycling men but i DO think there's a bit of a gap in the market there, where it's like... what are the actual mechanisms and tropes you usually see in those stories, what do you usually associate with it... i'm obviously a big toxic yuri enjoyer and to me it's a specific genre that's like. not equivalent to just any antagonistic lesbians, like you really want that codependent vicious mean girl-y sauce. you want some gender in there. works for mid noughties motogp what can u say

8. alien pokemon starter post: i LOVE this i think it's so good i think i made five perfect picks. obviously another exercise where you know there's not really a target audience apart from the spirits in your own head, but crucially those are the only beings you've got to please and appease. again, this was fun, i love doing stuff like that and i'm extremely invested in my aliens x pokemon notes in my docs i just like staring into space thinking about it

9. agassi/sampras post: another one where i'm like. okay that did actually migrate over to tennis tumblr so in retrospect i wish that were more tightly edited. but whatever! it's fine! honestly despite people being really lovely in the notes of that one, idt it's particularly good. it's completely carried by the strength of agassi and sampras' own writing about the rivalry, where tbh i'm only doing some very basic guiding of the reader through those flashpoints. i think there's like. one good paragraph in there i wrote, and it's the one on conservatism in tennis. but anyway i have such a long-standing affection for that rivalry i'm really glad i introduced some people to it, very much a passion thing y'know

10. tennis x motogp: a family of posts so i'm not gonna pick one out. the aliens one the sete/vale rivalry one the vale one the current riders one. the middle two are obviously the most extensive... again, super niche, nobody cares about this as much as i do, the valentino one was ofc completely self-indulgent. but i had a lot of fun with it, i have so many thoughts on this and i think it's a great mental exercise to like... translate things between sports like that because it forces you to engage with the sports on a more fundamental level. ughhh i love these they are For Me

anyway. feels kinda weird making this post lol,, i think this year i am starting to do some of this stuff more in my own notes again because... tbh sometimes i think i put a bit too much effort into figuring out how to make something accessible for a mostly imaginary target audience. which is obviously a good writing exercise in communicating clearly!! but sometimes it's also a bit silly. I think it really depends on two factors: what works for you / what suits each type of content. For ref I do humanities/social sciences and have no experience with economic courses (other than economic history) or anything stem

For me the fundamental thing is to go to class and take notes. It forces me to pay attention. Even if you'll be handed notes (never happened to me in my uni) take your own notes.

With time you'll learn to be efficient and only write down what works for you. I personally prefer to make extensive notes that include more than I need (the logic I follow is making notes that I could use and get an A with if I hit my head and got amnesia and forgot everything I know but this is obviously the extreme and so unnecessary 🤭). But even if you follow a very extensive model, be strategic. Some classes only require bullet points.

I use the same template every time and use different techniques, but all my uni notes look the same since 2018 (😅 feeling old now)

If the course is hard I do the reading previously and take very detailed notes: parts that are relevant, following the structure of the text rather than very schematic and I don't really add my own reflections in the notes other than on footnotes (not the most efficient for most but works for me ). For me this guarantees that I can participate in the class and be active and also that I have good materials to study.

For me, note taking does 70% of the work and then I only need to highlight and read with attention and take notes (I use my iPad) by hand clarifying anything necessary.

If I feel insecure about how much I know I try to take notes of the weakest parts by hand (schematic, do not copy all your notes by hand except for maybe something you really really need) trying to fit the most information in one page (like summarising all my notes from the course in a very crammed and chaotic sheet).

Then read out loud, try to explain it to yourself. Use reasoning and if you don't understand something try to put it in simpler words, then increase complexity.

Think about what the test will require and prepare accordingly. My tests have rarely been very memory based (more like requiring you to explain big concepts such as "does the state predate the nation or vice-versa"/"traveling in the middle ages"/"the use of primordialism as a myth of nationhood in central Eurasia"/etc with no ready-made answer but rather requiring an understanding of broader literature. I never did mock tests but I thought about possible challenges I'd finding.

Last: write a list of key words you want to use 100% in your tests/essays. Things, events, methodologies, authors, technical terms that maybe have less concise synonyms so that they are in your "mental lexicon/toolkit" so that you explain yourself using complex and discipline-specific terms. This will make you sound more confident and will become a great tool for the future.

Connected to this: there will be some pieces of information that should become part of your "toolkit". Don't get used to forgetting things right after the exam. Of course, some details will fade but the "core" will become the foundation that will make your future study sessions/writing/tests/talking in an academic or personal context solid.
