Scenarios

A tugging on B's hand and switching places when walking down the sidewalk because they don't want B walking next to the busy traffic.

A standing guard outside B's office as they take a short nap during lunch break so as to make sure nobody interrupts B's much needed rest.

A not letting B do any household chores after they find out that they're expecting. In fact, A doesn't let B lift a finger around the house nor at work, revealing A's lesser known domesticated side.

A giving B a lift home after their date, and insisting on walking B right to their doorstep before leaving.

^ with A tightly hugging B goodbye, not wanting to let go until B reminds them that they have an early morning at work the next day.

A reminding the waiter a second (or third) time of B's food allergies at a group gathering, and A getting teased by their friends for being over-protective and smitten with B.

A and B are out on a date, only to run into B's toxic ex. A immediately holds B's hand under the table, and whispers a quick 'I'm here, I love you' into their ear just because they know it'll reassure them.

A holding B's hand while sleeping after B had gotten physically hurt just so that they will be woken up if B tries to get out of bed or needs to get something.

"You have me now, A. I'm sorry that I wasn't before... but I'm here now. You have me now, and forever,"

“Hey,” A says in a sultry voice to B, leaning on a bookshelf.

Except the bookshelf starts to tilt. A screams in a panic, grabbing the bookshelf. Books begin to slide out, thudding to the ground. The bookshelf wobbles in place as A attempts to bring it back to equilibrium by yanking it towards them, but with too much force it begins to tilt the other way. Books fall; A lets go of the bookshelf for a moment to cover their and B’s heads with their arms. It's too late, though — the entire bookshelf comes plunging down.

B grabs A and rolls the both of them out of the way, to safety. A lies pinned under B, both of them breathing hard.

“Hey,” B greets back.

I just posted this fic yesterday. It is an alternate first Tarlos meeting. There is so much TK/Carlos and TK & Owen banter in it that I love....BUT I thought I'd post one of my other favorite little dialogue interactions between Carlos, Paul, and TK.

"Uh, excuse me. I'm looking for TK Strand."

TK hears the voice from the other side of the truck and straightens. He hasn't had a turn to shower some of the soot from the last call out of his hair and he most certainly doesn't take a second to check his reflection in the rig's mirror. He has to walk past it to get around the truck anyway.

"You know, I'm not sure where -"

"He's not in trouble."

"Oh, then he's right over here."

TK rounds the back of the truck as Paul points, nearly knocking him in the face.

"Thanks for having my back?" TK cocks his head at Paul.

"Hey, we're family now," Paul grins, "if you need to run from the law, the least I can do is give you a headstart."

"I'll pretend I didn't hear that."

Dialogue-First Scenes

Sometimes, quite often in fact, I write a scene dialogue-first. By which I mean that I will write out the dialogue out with exactly no actions, emotions, descriptions, etc. Just spoken words. If I have a very specific action I want then I’ll jot it down quickly, but I absolutely cannot and will not focus on that action.

Struggling with your dialogue, the flow and pace and emotion of it? Try dialogue-first. Struggling with starting a scene or where to continue it from somewhere you’ve gotten stuck? Try dialogue-first. Struggling with how a character speaks, or how their dynamic with another character works? Try dialogue-first.

It can really help, and I know I’m not the only writer who does it.

To give you an example...

“Hi.”

“Uh, hi?”

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to bother you! I just saw you here and wanted to ask what you’re drinking?”

“It’s a matcha hot chocolate with extra whipped cream and a shot of vanilla syrup.”

So, ignoring the fact that I don’t drink cafe/coffee-shop drinks and therefore made something up entirely, this is a dialogue-first interaction, maybe a third or fourth paragraph of something for after CharA has noticed CharB.

It flows, and you get some indication of emotion from the dialogue (and the punctuation! that “uh, hi question mark” is an indicator all of its own), but it’s also open. I haven’t had to think about what they look like, about what the world around them is doing, or the exact tones of their voices or the expressions. There is less to second-guess, and it’s simple. 

Or relatively so at least!   ;)

But now I can build from that - it’s a start. I literally just fill it in from here, taking or adding bits as I need to so that it still flows, but I can lean into the bits and pieces I want, and keep others quiet.

“Hi.” It’s a nervous, slightly awkward start, particularly when the boy visibly hesitates to match their reply,

“Uh, hi?”

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to bother you!” Aaron laughs, fingers twisting together, “I just saw you here and wanted to ask what you’re drinking?”

“It’s a matcha hot chocolate with extra whipped cream and a shot of vanilla syrup.”

Well, Aaron’s never heard of that combination of things before, but if this pretty stranger is drinking it, then surely it must be worth trying.

So, again, this is a pretty rough example, but hopefully you guys can see a bit of the process from how the dialogue flows and develops, and I can make a full scene or interaction out of it!

If a scene isn’t working for you, try to find a way to circumvent that, rather than necessarily pushing through it when you just aren’t liking it. Try dialogue-first, try writing the next scene and joining them up later, try changing points of view, whatever works for you - hopefully this just gives you one more option  ^.^/

Alice in Wonderland AU! Worf and his Starfleet crew are transported onto a strange planet that originally had no live signs. But not only does the vegetation seem to be sentient — talking flowers can be very unsettling — there are also aliens living here!

After a journey through shenanigans and silliness, Worf is led to what looks like a chaotic tea party of a man called the Mad Hatter. Said Hatter is a large humaoid with broad shoulders and sparkling blue eyes. And a giant tophat, of course. His company consists of a large rabbit and a tiny mouse, who insult Worf for disturbing their tea party and warn him of the terrible biscuits.

Worf has trouble coping with his indignance. The Mad Hatter however, has been studying for some moments now, his eyes twinkling with interest. “Your hair wants cutting,” he says.

Worf straightens his back, suddenly vaguely defensive about his hair. But he can’t bring himself to be angry with the man. “You should learn not to make personal remarks.”

And though the Hatter’s speech is incoherent, and his company absolutely terrible, Worf can’t help but enjoy the easy timelessness of the situation. The tea is, contrary to everyone else’s opinion, really good. And those blue eyes are a sight to behold!

hello! of course, here are some prompts based on your request!! a small disclaimer though... i'm really not the best when it comes to hero x villain dynamics bc i've never written something of that genre myself hehe. but yes i love trying new ideas and i hope you like them and i'm so sorry this too a while!! i needed to churn my writing cells out haha. what is "meet ugly"?

a "meet ugly" is the exact opposite of a "meet cute"; instead of an over-the-top, romantic encounter, it happens in less than favorable conditions. it's awkward, it's messy, it's...ugly.

and it's my favorite.

so, here are some prompts and dialogues for your otp first meets!

✦ A is constantly being disturbed from sleep by their new neighbor, B. after a particularly rough night, A decides they've had enough.

✦ in a rush, A trips over B's belongings, making a mess of themselves (spilling drinks, dropping stuff, etc.). B tries to apologize, but A is too flustered.

✦ C has paired A and B to work together for x amount of time. both prefer to work alone, but their skills are crucial for the objective. (bonus points if they're both known for being the best at what they do, and become rivals first.)

✦ every time B comes home, their parking spot is taken. after a little bit of sleuthing, they find out that it is A, who hasn't been paying attention.

✦ A, who is afraid of heights/flying, is seatmates with B, who is blissfully unaware and is talking their ear off. (bonus points if A gets sick in front of B.)

✦ A is driving through a rain storm and has to make a stop at the nearest store, where they meet B, who has yet to be affected by the weather.

✦ B having a small, but embarrassing, incident that A just so happens to witness. (a classic!)

✦ "We'll be together for a while. Just...don't get in my way." "Likewise."

✦ "How could you be so careless?" "How could you be so clumsy?"
