i don't mind genderbend fic or art. usually if i don't feel it, i just scroll past and ignore (my policy on headcanons/fanon content that i don't personally agree with).
what i do mind is when an author/artist takes a same-sex couple (usually mlm with one of them somewhat more androgynous or even with a bit of feminine silhouette), make one of them into the opposite sex, and only write/draw them like that.
like, genderbend one of them if you want but if that's the only way you portray them then that's sus to me.
it's like internalised homophobia, imo.
make them both genderbend! make mlm into wlw, make wlw into mlm, make it straight once in a while, spice it up! just don't take a queer ship and make it straight just to justify shipping them.

i had a thought of "do people not know what AUs are anymore?" and then i remembered nobody explains fandom stuff to new people anymore so it is entirely plausible people genuinely don't know what AUs are and nobody has explained it to them, so for today's lucky 10,000:
"AU" stands for "Alternate Universe" or "Alternative Universe" (same difference) and is basically any thought scenario for a fandom that isn't canon and can't fit within the canon universe. If it takes place in the canon universe but something is notably different, that is typically what's known as a "Canon divergent AU," because it diverges from canon.
an AU can be absolutely anything. There's a couple of widespread pan-fandom au scenarios that often get thrown around, like coffee shop aus, genderbend aus, hanahaki aus (hanahaki is a whole thing in itself i'd recommend researching on your own), etc. One you might hear sometimes is "crossover AU" which is when you have characters from one fandom interacting with characters from another.
You can have as many aus as you want. They can be whatever you want and you can do whatever you want in them. It's a sandbox for you to play around in and explore how things would be different or how the characters would act in those circumstances or environments. Maybe they have different relationships with each other. Maybe they behave slightly differently. Or you can just say "Okay, [x] is true. How did they get here? How would things have to be different for this to occur?" which can also be fun.
If you are ever confused about why people ship something that seems completely out of the blue or doesn't make sense to you in the canon setting, there's a good chance they like it in an AU setting! Not everything everybody is interacting with is necessarily the canon! Not everybody wants things to exist in canon and just want to explore playing dolls in a different sandbox and that's okay. And their sandbox might look a lot different than yours, and that's also okay. You have the freedom to make your sandbox whatever you please. Do whatever you want forever. Get funky with it. AUs are fun.
Okay that's my schpeal. everybody go have fun and play nice now.

"This is some gay shit" Good. Silly. Fair enough. Doesn't inherently invalidate other interpretations of the relationship. Honestly yeah, it is kind of gay regardless of their canonical relationship status

I think the other reason I don't really get into ships as portrayed by fandom culture is that it seems like the mindset is more like. "I want these characters to be in a Romantic Relationship(TM)" instead of "I want these characters' relationship to be romantic"
What I mean here is that, so often I see pairings enacting romance tropes to the point of heavily altering or downright replacing their original dynamic - as if the people behind it only understand romance as a series of checklists to tick off. Couples like to kiss and sleep in the same bed and flirt with each other, so it doesn't matter who the characters are, if they're a couple then naturally they'll do those things, right??
And that's where the whole thing starts to lose me, because I would assume that the appeal of shipping characters is, y'know... the characters? Rather than just, the idea of a couple? If I'm thinking about how it'd be cool for them to be in love, my first thought is always "so how would they show it," because just like everything else about a person, the answer is going to be different on a case-by-case basis.
Maybe the characters involved aren't really into kissing, but they like arranging date activities. Maybe they aren't committed to the structure of dating at all, and just want to be around each other whenever they can. And even if they are the types to like doing traditionally romantic things, that doesn't suddenly erase whatever else they had going on before they started adding that on top of it.
I'm not saying that the more typical romance tropes and activities are bad, just that they're applied kind of excessively, regardless of whether or not they actually work for the characters involved. I want to see my favorite characters having relationships that are true to who they are, not what the stock depiction of a couple says they should be.

You think Watson ever felt guilty when Mary died as he was mourning Holmes, wishing he'd spent more time with her instead of grieving someone already gone? You think he buried her close to the honorary grave he made for Holmes, or separate so he could properly give each of them his attention when he came to visit? You think he buried them with a single plot between them, waiting for his own turn? You think he spent time creating checks and balances of who he was meant to be hurting over more?
You think when it was all over he ever went back to Mary's grave and begged her to come back too?

i just read about the "narcissism of small differences," aka the idea that the more a community has in common, the more likely the people in it are to engage in interpersonal feuds and mutual ridicule because of hypersensitivity to minor differences perceived in each other, and i knew there was a reason my time in academia and fandom felt oddly similar lmao

Just found out someone tried ask Jack Innanen (who plays half a m/m couple on a different network) about Buddie and I want to apologize to the Adults fandom on behalf of 911. We hate having to deal with Bvddies and their obsession with trying to overwrite canon mlm and we wouldn’t wish it on anyone else.

My favorite relationship dynamic is a healthy straight couple befriending a dark haired fella and then proceeding to accidentally create the most powerful queer polycule in existence

god I have like a billion dungeon meshi comic ideas, some even thumbed/scripted, but I can’t stop drawing chilshi hdhshdhsj the downside of being fond of a smaller ship is you have to make all the content yourself…

I humbly request more Papyrus and Mettaton doodles!
If I remember correctly, Papyrus was a pretty big fan of him? I also think they'd have a silly dynamic as friends
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The formation of a beautiful friendship
(This took me so much longer than I thought it would)
Context?:
This takes place after the monsters have made it to the surface! Mettaton stayed underground for a while since not everyone moved out right away and somebody has to entertain the ones who stayed behind, right? After a little while though he decided it was time to make his debut on the surface. He decided to stay with Alphys for a while while looking for a house (and trying to figure out how to translate G into $ to buy said house)
Papyrus is Papyrus and tends to invite himself to hang out with Undyne a lot- if he can't find her at her place, he can usually find her at Alphys'. So he just. Kinda. Shows up sometimes.
That's all! I hope you enjoyed :)

hi, crosstagging shippers! why add the tag to ur post if ur purely saying negative stuff about the ship? do you not realize the ship tag is for ppl that enjoy the ship and that the anti tag is for ppl who don’t? do you not realize your post is still likely to get traction without crosstagging?
just stay out of the tag if you don’t like the ship it’s literally so easy.
