Not Half Bad - Marauders x Reader
AN - I'm a few minutes early but happy valentine's day, my loves. I wanted to post something that wasn't crazy romantic because I know today can be pretty lonely. So, enjoy some platonic marauders x reader fluff. This is my first time writing anything like this so please let me know what you think. 1.7k words.
Y/N startled awake, her head throbbing and her eyes swollen from tears. She groaned softly, feeling the weight of exhaustion as she rubbed her face, trying to shake off the remnants of sleep. Then, the unmistakable sound echoed through her apartment again.
Bang, bang, bang.
With a resigned sigh, Y/N muttered curses under her breath before she shuffled towards the front door. The harsh hallway light made her squint as she opened the door, taking a moment to register the trio standing before her.
“Come on, you. Out of the way, we’ve got some serious work to do!” James declared, gently nudging Y/N aside to enter her apartment, with Remus and Sirius following close behind.
“What the hell are you doing? It’s practically the crack of dawn!” She exclaimed; her voice still thick with sleep.
“Oh, yeah? And you’d know what time of day it was, would you?” Sirius teased, theatrically throwing open her curtains, allowing light to flood into the room for the first time in days.
“We’re on damage control. Y’know, since we haven’t heard from you in almost a week.” Remus explained, heading straight into the kitchen and flicking the kettle on.
Y/N sighed heavily, feeling a pang of guilt for having shut off herself off from her friends after her recent break up. The end of her relationship had hit her harder than she had ever anticipated, leaving her feeling raw and vulnerable. She hadn’t felt up to facing her friends properly. She had shot them a quick message briefly explaining the situation before shutting off her phone and finding solace in her own company as she grappled with the emotional fallout.
Remus busied himself in the kitchen while he waited for the kettle to boil. He had a tea towel swung over his shoulder as he started washing the dishes that had been piling up in the sink. James was getting the living room straight, opening windows, clearing up the endless piles of scrunched up tissues and fluffing up the sofa cushions.
“You don’t have to do all this – I'm fine!” Y/N protested.
“Stop fussing and just let us help you,” Sirius chimed in, poking his head around the doorway from where he was in the bathroom, “Now, get in here because I’ve just run you a bath.”
Y/N’s protests died on her lips as she relented, allowing herself to be guided into the bathroom by Sirius’s firm but caring insistence. The soothing scent of lavender filled the air as she stepped into the room. Sirius shut the door behind her, allowing some privacy. He had set her some fresh towels and clean clothes on the side, even going as far as to light a few candles. Y/N let out a sigh as she sank into the tub, the warm water washing over her tired body.
After a while, Y/N emerged from the bathroom feeling a bit lighter. She smiled at the three boys, appreciating their practical gestures of support. They had practically cleaned her whole apartment while she was in the bath. It had taken a bit of a hit in the week that she had been moping around. Remus had set her a steaming mug of tea on the coffee table, and she took it into her hands eagerly.
“Feeling better?” he asked, patting the spot on the sofa next to him.
“Much better. Thanks for the rescue” she smiled at each of them, “I owe you guys one.”
“Nonsense.” James dismissed with a wave of his hand, “That’s what friends are for. Plus, I’ve been dying to bring out my superhero cape.”
Remus snorted into his tea, “Superhero cape? More like a tea towel tied around your neck, mate.”
“Hey, it’s all about the dramatic effect, Moony. You should try it some time.” James mock-glared at him.
“I’d pay good money to see that.” Y/N laughed.
“You nearly did!” Sirius remarked, “I literally had to pry it from around his neck before you got out of the bath.”
Y/N burst into laughter at the mental image, shaking her head in amusement, “I can only imagine the heroic struggle.” She said, grinning at James, who rolled his eyes with a good natured sigh.
“Yeah, well, it was a valiant effort on his part,” James admitted, earning a playful elbow jab from Sirius.
It was the first time in a good week or so, that Y/N had laughed properly. She felt her spirits lift with each passing moment, the heaviness that had weighed in her heart for the last week beginning to fade. Their light-hearted banter and playful antics had a way of lifting her spirits, offering a welcomed distraction from her recent troubles. It was only when the boys stood up to leave that the empty feeling in the pit of her stomach started to return.
Sirius noticed her face fall when they started getting ready to leave, each of them shrugging on their coats and slipping into their shoes.
“Don’t worry, we’re coming back.” Sirius reassured her.
“Yeah, you didn’t think that you could get rid of us that easily, did you?” Remus chuckled.
“We’ve just got to nip out to get some stuff but then we’ll be back.” James promised.
“What stuff?” she questioned.
“Ask us no questions and we’ll tell you no lies.” James quipped, playfully tapping her on the nose before swiftly exiting.
A bemused smile played on her lips as she watched her friends disappear. Although they had only been around at her flat for a few hours, it felt eerily empty now that they had gone. Collapsing onto the sofa, she reached for her phone, hesitating before finally switching it on after days of deliberate avoidance. There was the expected flurry of messages from her friends and family checking in on her and she made a mental note to reply to them later on. She quickly deleted a particularly nasty text from her ex before she gave herself chance to read it properly. As the screen blinked back up at her, the date glared back with unexpected significance.
Valentine’s Day.
The realisation hit her and stirred up memories and emotions that she had been trying to suppress. She couldn’t help but feel a twinge of loneliness as she thought back to past Valentine’s Day spent with her now ex-partner. For a moment, she regretted even switching on her phone; ignorance might have been bliss on a day like today. Tears prickled in her eyes and she bit down on her lip in a futile attempt to hold back the flood of emotions.
Just as she had been earlier that morning, she was brought back to reality by the door of her apartment swinging open and James, Remus and Sirius bustling back inside.
“Told you we wouldn’t be long!” James said brightly, though the look soon dropped from his face the second his eyes fell on Y/N.
“Oh, no! What’s happened? Everything okay?” Sirius rushed over and crouched in front of her, so his face was level to where she was slumped on the sofa.
“It’s silly,” she sniffled, “I turned on my phone because obviously I’ve been avoiding it for ages and I saw the date. It’s just... overwhelming.”
Remus moved to sit beside her, his presence a comforting anchor as he place a hand on her shoulder.
“It’s not silly at all, Y/N. Valentine’s Day can be shit. Especially after everything you’ve been through.” he said softly, offering her a sympathetic smile.
James signed, rubbing the back of his neck as he stepped closer, “We came over today because... well we didn’t want you to spend Valentine’s Day alone. We didn’t realise that you didn't even know what day it was. We’ve kind of fucked up really, haven’t we?”
“Don’t be daft.” Y/N wiped the tears away with her sleeve, “You’ve already cheered me up so much just by being here.”
“Let’s not stop now then, eh?” Sirius said, patting her affectionately on the head as he stood up, “We’ve got plenty more planned for this evening. Why don’t you go get yourself freshened up while we get set up in here?”
Y/N smiled gratefully and obliged, making her way to the bathroom. She splashed her face with cool water, letting it wash away the remnants of tears that clung to her skin. As she caught sight of herself in the mirror, she forced a smile onto her face in an attempt to make herself feel better. She quickly ran her hands through her hair and smoothed out the wrinkles in her clothes.
In the other room, the boys had sprung to action. James rummaged through the bags of shopping, his brows furrowed in concentration as he set about preparing dinner. Remus, ever the organiser, rearranged the furniture to create a cosier and more comfortable set up for them. Sirius, with his flair for the dramatic, set about lighting candles and pulled an assortment of decorations from his bag to add a festive touch to the occasion.
As Y/N stepped out of the bathroom, her eyes widened in surprise at the transformation that had taken place in the living room. The warm glow of candlelight danced across the walls, casting soft shadows across the room. Tears of gratitude welled in her eyes and with a shaky breath she made her way to join them.
“Speechless, huh?” Sirius joked gently, a twinkle of amusement in his eyes.
Y/N managed a watery smile, “I don’t even know what to say.”
“Nothing needs to be said.” James stepped in from the kitchen, floral apron tied around his waist.
“Just know that we’ve got your back always, yeah?” Remus chimed in.
With a grateful nod, Y/N settled into her seat at the table, feeling a sense of peace wash over her.
“Nice apron, James.” Y/N teased, unable to contain her laughter.
“What can I say? Real men wear floral.” he quipped, setting down plates of food in front of each of them.
“Ah! I almost forgot!” Sirius stood up quickly from the table and disappeared into the other room.
He returned a few moments later, holding a bouquet of flowers. He presented them to her with a flourish. Y/N gasped in response.
“You really didn’t have to!” she protested, her voice filled with gratitude, “You’ve already done so much for me today!”
“We wanted to.” Remus smiled.
“Besides, we’d be pretty crappy mates if we let you go a whole Valentine’s Day without flowers.” Sirius chuckled.
“Yeah, it’s practically a cardinal sin to neglect such an important tradition.” Remus nodded in agreement.
“See? We’re not completely useless, are we?” James nudged her, grinning.
“Nah, you’re not half bad.” she beamed back at them, “I might even go as far as to say that you’re the best.”

Stop writing marauders fics and making peter this outcast that they ignore and didn't love. His betrayal hurt for a reason. Remus truly believed Sirius did it. And Sirius didn't want Pete dead because he let him go to Azkaban. No, he wanted him dead because he did what they promised they never do and that's hurt each and he did that. And I know for a fact James would resent him because he didn't just put James and Sirius in danger, he put lily and harry in danger. But secretly he'd forgive him. He'd pray it was a trick and peter was tortured. Or he was being a spy for Dumbledore and had to say something. James loved peter. Remus loved peter. Sirius loved peter. PETER IS A MARAUDER WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT. That doesn't mean you have to hate him. But stop making him this terrible, evil, scheming, person.

During the party in the Gryffindor James had gotten blackout drunk and he was going out of his way to talk to Regulus. When James kissed Regulus everyone looked to Sirius expecting him to be angry even James had sobered up a bit realizing what had happened. He immediately went to Sirius to talk to him about what he had just done only for Sirius to walk away and go up to his dorms. James looked back at Regulus and then went to follow Sirius with the gang following behind. “How do you think Sirius is gonna take that” Crouch asked amused making Regulus roll his eyes “he’s fine,” he said sighing making his friends turn to him confused “his best friend just kissed you? And you say he’s fine?” Evan asked confused by his words “Yes he’s fine he’s not mad he’s just playing around with James he’s been knowing about us for the past months he already warned me not to hurt James, I’m certain he’s gonna give James that talk now” he said sighing as he downed his drink. His friends turned to each other before turning back to Regulus “he’s been knowing?” Crouch asked making Regulus smirk amused “My brother is not stupid and James is bad at hiding stuff from my brother,” Regulus said chuckling.
When James entered the room he looked at Sirius who was raiding Remus’ chocolate “Hey..” James said hesitantly making Sirius look up worried it might’ve been Remus before going back to the muggle chocolate Remus brought and kept for emergencies “Hey what’s up prongs” he said as he ate a piece of the chocolate as he looked up to James. “Look about me and Regulus” James started only for Sirius to say “You mean how you’ve been going out with my brother behind my back?” After Sirius said that James looked down realizing he should’ve told Sirius in the beginning. “I’m not mad or anything just a bit disappointed James that you waited this long to tell me,” Sirius said when Sirius said James name James felt as if he just got punched James had only heard Sirius talking this seriously when it was about what was going on back home or when he talked about Remus. “Look I.. I’m sorry but I love Regulus and I won’t hurt him I promise” James said kneeling in front of Sirius’ feet and looking up at him. James looked shocked when he noticed the tears in Sirius’ eyes “That’s not the point mate the point is that my mate my guy I think of as a brother waited this long to tell me that he was going to be my brother-in-law” Sirius started seriously before smirking at the end. James froze before smirking back “Well I’m trying a bit too hard trying to hide it from my family now is it” James said making Sirius chuckle “guess it’s time you stop hiding it then” he said making James nod “If you even hurt regulus I will beat your ass got it?” Sirius said with a glare that was cracking with amusement James nodded immediately “I’ll never hurt Regulus” he stated before getting up “Now is there any more muggle chocolate” he asked making Sirius nod and pull out Remus's whole stash.
When the party cooled down and everyone left the other two marauders went to their dorm Remus helping Peter walk as Peter was drunk. After Remus entered the room he saw the other two cuddling on his bed making him sigh. He put Peter into his bed and tucked him in before walking to his bed and looking at the two on it. He saw half of his chocolate stash was gone making him clench his fist and his eye twitched before he sighed and rolled his eyes. He grabbed his stash and hid it underneath his cupboard he began to walk over to Sirius’ bed. “Remus” Sirius whispered sitting up the best he could with James hugging him tightly Remus turned back to the two. “Yes?” He whispered trying to be quiet “Did you have fun at the party” Sirius whispered yawning as he rubbed his eyes trying to wake up a bit. Remus smiled at the boy “Yes it would’ve been better if you two were there though” he whispered as he sat on his bed next to the two “Obviously we are always the life of the party” Sirius said smirking “Shut up you two” James said groaning as he pulled remus into his and sirius’ little pile. Sirius groaned at the two laying on top of him “shit sorry” Remus said trying to get up “It's fine go to sleep” Sirius said hugging him and James to him. When the morning hit Peter had also joined the pile.

Remus: what happened again??
Regulus: well I was walking outside and I saw James, so I just came to kiss him…
Remus: and??
Regulus: he rejected me! So I tried again, he rejected me again!
Remus: maybe that wasn’t him?
Regulus: do you know any other gryffindor who can talk to a dog while playing with a golden snitch?
Remus: a dog?
Regulus: yeah that black dog
Remus: what did you say to James exactly before leaving
Regulus: he is the one who left! I said to him that he was less shy last night and he ran!!
Remus: I’m sorry for your loss

The Wolf's Arms: Part One. Marauders x Reader
This is a purely self indulgent fic about two things that I love. The marauders and the pub. This will probably turn into a series of fics that don’t really link because I have so many ideas for it. It’s not set in a particular time period, mainly like 70’s ish but there might be some modern things sprinkled in along the way just for shits and giggles. Sorry if that’s annoying but I love creating my own time period so I can have things exactly the way I want them haha. Please let me know if this fic is hard to understand as I know there will be a lot of references to UK culture things along the way (not in this part I dont think) – feel free to drop me an ask if there’s anything you don’t understand/want me to explain.  This is a platonic!marauders x reader fic
Friday night pub nights had become a monthly occurrence for them now. It was any excuse really. Sad? Pub. Celebrating? Pub. Hungry? Pub. Traumatic life event? Pub. The four of them had become regulars now. Every time sitting at the same table in the back. The landlord often joked with them that the pub would go under if they ever stopped coming.
It had taken them a while to choose a pub. Their pub. It was a meticulous process that they all took very seriously. They had spent countless nights doing pub crawls throughout the city, trying to find which pub suited them best. Best beer on tap, best prices, within walking distance so they could stumble back home.
“That one’s my favourite so far.” Remus decided one night as they left the third pub on their pub crawl.
Sirius barked out a laugh, slinging an arm around Remus’s shoulders. Partly in mock affection, partly to steady himself after the few drinks he’d had. “You’re only saying that because it’s got the cheapest pints so far.”
“You’re easily swayed, Moony.” James shook his head at him, leading the group to the next pub along the street. Just as they rounded the corner onto the next dimly lit street, Y/N interjected.
“Speaking of sway, did anyone else notice the shady bloke in the corner?”  a grimace contoured her features, “I swear he was selling meat from his jacket.”
“Hah! The infamous Hog’s Head Meat Man!” James exclaimed, a grin spreading across his face. “Sure, he’s a dodgy one, but he’ll give you a good deal on some bacon if you’re brave enough to ask.”
“Yeah. I don’t really fancy eating some blokes pocket meat, thanks though.” Sirius scrunched up his face in disgust, “Where to next?”
Undeterred from the last shady establishment, they pressed on, venturing into a number of different pubs, until finally, they stumbled upon one that felt like home. It was tucked down a narrow alleyway, easy to miss if you weren’t paying attention.
The inside was dimly lit from the mounted wall lights, casting soft shadows against the exposed brick. The air was thick with the smell of cigarette smoke and spilt beer – a scent which sounds disgusting but made the four of them nudge each other and grin as they stepped inside. The actual bar spanned about half the length of the room, polished mahogany adorned with rows of brass taps, their labels worn and faded with age.
Mismatched tables and chairs filled the space, ranging from rickety wooden stools to worn, plush armchairs. Each table, although being scratched from rigorous cleaning, still had the infamous sticky sheen to it that all pub goers will be familiar with. Much to their delight an old jukebox stood proudly in the corner of the room, Remus immediately fumbled in his pocket for some change.
“Typical Moony. Straight to the jukebox instead of straight to the bar.” James teased as he leaned over the bar to survey the selection of beers on tap. Remus, who had already begun to select songs, looked up momentarily only to flip the bird at James.
While James got the round in, it was left up to Y/N and Sirius to decide what table the group would settle on. After a quick once-over of the pub, they decided on a table in the corner, nestled beneath a dimly lit lampshade, and much to Remus’s delight, only a few steps away from the jukebox. With a nod of agreement, they made their way over to claim their spot.
Precariously trying to carry four pints in only two hands, James returned a moment later, putting the glasses down on the table with a soft thud, some of the liquid sloshing over the edge.
“Cheers, you lot.” Remus exclaimed, raising his glass. The group, a few pints deep and sporting glassy eyes and wide smiles, joined in, clinking their glasses together.
“What’s the verdict on this place?” Sirius asked, taking a sip of his beer.
“Well-” Remus started.
“Ah, ah, hold it right there.” Y/N interjected, “After your last ‘gem’ turned out to be the Hog’s Head, I think we should put your pub-picking privileges on probation.” she punctuated her remark with a playful jab to Remus’s ribs.
“Hey! It had character!” Remus feigned offense, “and besides, it’s not my fault that they had a creative idea of what hygiene is.”
“Creative? I’m pretty sure that I saw two rats shagging in the corner.” Sirius retorted, earning a round of laughter from the group.
“Alright, alright.” Remus conceded, holding his hands up, “the Hog’s Head was a bit of a shitter, but this pub’s a winner, yeah?”
“Agreed,” James chimed in, raising his glass once again, “To new beginnings and hopefully less questionable pubs!”
“To less questionable pubs!” the others chorused, once again knocking their glasses together before taking a large swig of their drinks.
“I feel like we should have toasted this pub. Just because I’ve decided that this is the best one.” Y/N said, looking around thoughtfully, “Although, I didn’t actually get a look at the sign before we came in, so I couldn’t actually tell you what it’s called.”
“The Wolf’s Arms!” a voice called out from the other side of the room. They all snapped their heads round, curiosity piqued, and their eyes fell on a lone man seated at the bar. His cheeks were flushed from the booze, and a cigarette dangled from his lips.
“To The Wolf’s Arms!” they echoed, toasting for the third time that night.

James: Oh good, since you're awake-
Remus: *groans*
James: -your plan didn't work
Remus: What plan?
James: When you told me to throw confetti over Regulus' head to get him to date me
Remus: I specifically said 'Do NOT, under any circumstances, do that James'
James: Exactly! That's basically telling me to do it!
Remus: It didn't work on Lily, how the hell did you think it would work on Regulus
James: I couldn't have known!! They're such different people!!
Remus: And which parts of those "differences" made you think Regulus Black would be more receptive to being thrown confetti at in front of the whole school
James: Crouch and Rosier still laugh hysterically every time they see me..
James: So what do you suggest I do? Make even a grander gesture in front of everyone??
Remus: No! What-
James: Maybe sing him a song??
Remus: I-

James: You're a genius. I knew I came to the right person
Remus: That's the stupidest thing I have ever heard and I feel like I should call Regulus to warn him about you. But you seem convinced so. God bless. *slumps back to bed*
James: Do you believe in god Remus?
Remus: *voice muffled by the pillow* I believe in hell. And I'm in it.
