#power-jacketing

I’m here to talk about a concept I am currently referring to as power-jacketing, especially as it relates to the queer community. This is when a marginalized group is painted as having power over others in their marginalized community when this is not the case. Power-jacketing and its consequences are a form of lateral aggression and tie into the idea of oppression olympics.
The point of this term is to understand and discuss the cycle we’ve seen of the queer community misrepresenting a queer group’s experiences to claim they have power over other queer people. An example is the way asexual people on this site a few years ago were misrepresented as “basically straight” because they aren’t often called slurs or physically assaulted for their identity. This idea was used to accuse them of taking away resources from “real” queer people and justify harassment towards them. It relied on ignoring the very real and sometimes unique problems that asexual and other aspec folks face, like being called less than human for not experiencing sexual or romantic attraction and the way aspec identities continue to be viewed as something to eradicate by the medical system.
It is power-jacketing to claim something associated with a marginalized group is a privilege and grants them power over others when that isn’t true. For example, having one’s identity erased isn’t privilege, invisibility isn’t privilege, and having to be stealth/closeted to be treated well isn’t privilege, but these are all treated as if they give the experiencer power over more visible queer folks. Claims of privilege are made by cherry-picking what counts as true oppression, such as murders and slurs, and then considering the target group’s reduced experience on that axis to be privilege while ignoring other, often quieter unique forms of systemic oppression the group faces. Privilege can be used to consider a group “basically straight/cis” (in other communities, basically White, abled, etc.) and deny them access to and support/resources from the community. It is power-jacketing to willfully ignore or purposely deny experiences of oppression by the target group. It is also power-jacketing to exaggerate a privilege gap between two marginalized groups while minimizing the gap between the target group and those with actual systemic power.
Currently, transmascs are being power-jacketed to explain why transfems should be allowed to talk over them and to justify their mistreatment. This comes in several forms. One is calling their invisibility a privilege compared to transfems’ hypervisibility despite the way it contributes to their oppression. The term power-jacketing recognizes that it is not privilege to swap one problem with another. Another big one is the claim that transmascs’ identity grants them male privilege. Using this term requires acknowledging that one’s social perception, how they’re perceived and treated by others, may be different than their identity; for example, trans men may identify as male but be treated as female, and transhets may identify as straight but be treated as gay. Ignoring or denying these lived realities is very much power-jacketing.
This theory is very much a work in progress, so if you have any perspectives or experiences to add please do!

Danny Phantom x Tim Drake: The Ultimate Campus Power Couple, Football Edition
picture this: Danny has always been a huge college football fan—like, Amity Park goes nuts for it. It’s practically in his DNA at this point. So when Danny hits college, it’s a no-brainer: he tries out for the football team, and obviously, he crushes it. He’s the star running back, fast, agile, and honestly just born to be on the field.
Enter Tim Drake, aka Danny’s ridiculously supportive boyfriend. Tim’s not necessarily a football guy, but for Danny? He’s there. He’s at every single game, wearing Danny’s varsity jacket like it was made for him, sitting front row, screaming louder than anyone else when Danny scores. The other students think it’s adorable (or they’re jealous, let’s be real).
On campus, these two are the definition of “campus couple goals.” Danny’s the football star with all the charisma, and Tim’s the genius who’s always with him, supporting him in his own quiet, unshakeable way. If they’re not holding hands walking between classes, you’ll find them at the cafeteria, Tim quizzing Danny on some class they probably share while Danny’s got an arm around him, nodding but mostly just focused on how cute Tim looks in his jacket.
Game day is serious business. Tim shows up early to claim his seat (always the same one, right where Danny can see him). He’s got his routine down—Danny always gets a good-luck kiss before heading out onto the field, and let’s be real, Danny is 100% convinced that those kisses are why he’s so good at the game. The rest of the team teases him about it, but he doesn’t care—because Tim’s his lucky charm.
Danny loves to show Tim off, too. After a big win, he’s dragging Tim onto the field with him, arm around his shoulders like, “Yeah, that’s my genius boyfriend,” while Tim just stands there, trying not to look embarrassed but totally failing because he loves it. Danny’s got that proud grin, Tim’s got his almost too big varsity jacket, and the entire campus is either swooning or jealous because honestly, who wouldn’t be?
And let’s talk about the post-game routine: after every game, no matter what, they’re meeting outside the locker room. Danny’s still hyped from the adrenaline, all sweaty and beaming, and Tim’s waiting there with a smirk, ready to hand over a water bottle and steal a quick kiss. They walk back together, Danny in his football gear, Tim still in that jacket that’s like three sizes too big, and it’s just… perfect.
the best part? Even when they’re not at a game, they’re still that couple on campus. Tim’s constantly wearing Danny’s jacket, and Danny’s forever pulling him into random kisses between classes. They’re the kind of couple that makes everyone believe in love again—Danny’s the heart, Tim’s the brain, and together they’re just unstoppable.

this has been a roller coaster of a design journey but finally I can present you: class swap artificer!adaine and rogue!fabian
#dimension 20#fantasy high#fhfy#fhsy#fhjy#fabian seacaster#adaine abernant#fh class quangle#goodbye... goodbye hoodie kid adaine..... we have mecha pilot/power armor adaine instead#I couldnt really land how she'd get a hoodie reliably in freshman year given the abernants pattern of confiscating shit from her#so I kinda switched gear and dug a bit into a like sukeban aesthetics instead. and since shes with the AV club I like the idea of#like a radio coord thing for her. hence the suspenders#I fully admit the sukeban thing is influenced by the hacker woman in ghostwire tokyo who I have a small crush on#she's SO cool. too bad about a number of things with that game#the jacket of useful things is a racer jacket this time bc Im predictable like that#her ensemble in junior year is her tank top + overall it might not be clear enough in the pic...#just had the thought ''man I should do turnarounds for all of them'' and immediately had to slap myself out of it#anyways uh! fabian I have inflicted with my favourite thing to do to characters who like to stealth or fly under the radar#which is Bright Extremely Noticeable Jacket That Hides Your Hands#fabian's ghost motif has led me to the famous horror movie trope of silhouette with iconic jacket from afar#(see Sinister and Alice Sweet Alice)#and I love to imagine him hanging the coat up somewhere and opponents aiming there instead of at him#but also the raincoat is specifically modeled after the yellow fisherman's raincoat#and. that led to. me thinking abt fabian pulling riz up at that cliff with a net instead of the battle sheet lmao#so his junior year design is fully Fishing. which is so fucking funny it has obliterated all other possibilities from my brain#ranger flavour: captain ahab#I still debate making him carry around an actual fishing rod tbh. right now Im giving him a rifle grappling hook thing#gods. I just think High School Classmate Suddenly Gets Way Too Into Fishing is the funniest fucking thing that can happen#thank you fabian. thank you for giving me this. love you buddy#still blanking on kristen but! throughout this whole storm here I've realised I just need to fuck around

I’m not someone that particularly cares about a ship being canon or not, in fact I would rather the media I consume have no romance at all (giving my blog confusing yes I know)
But there is something about the canon ties between Shanks and Mihawk that drives me feral with need to see what their whole deal is.
Because like there are so many little inconsequential details that when taking separately seem pathetic and weak. But then put together it feels like it paints the picture of a larger undeniable connection and understanding between two wildly different men.
The fact that their main color is both red (Mihawk’s is a more wine dark red than Shanks’ bright red and a little more “subtle” given that Shanks is literally called red hair) but even then their main symbols, their identifying features, are red! Mihawk’s eyes and Shanks hair (yes while I love the gold and think that’s better I cannot ignore the fact that Oda consistently colors in Mihawk’s eyes red even though the gold is infinitely more popular)
They have the same birthday, are practically the same height, both with the promises to our two main protagonists to meet them at the top with a parting “gift”, both serve as a mentor to the protagonist (mihawk literally thought zoro how to kill him 😭), both with the bird(ish) iconography.
The fact that Mihawk, Mihawk! A man whose introduction was that he didn’t care much about anything and caused destruction on a whim, cares enough about what Shanks thinks to mentally apologize before trying to kill luffy (what the fuck).
The fact that whitebeard felt the need to reference his duel with Mihawk in his conversation with Shanks, despite not really being very relevant to the conversation and the fact that this is the first we’ve seen shanks in years and it is brought up in the same context as his relationship with Buggy (an already established relationship) reveals his relationship to Roger seems to point to the fact that this duel between Mihawk and Shanks is an important relationship to shanks. It couldn’t just be to show strength because he was about to clash with whitebeard the strongest man. It’s also hard to notice that those two relationships didn’t end particularly well for shanks.
Also the fact that it was Mihawk out of every character , Mihawk that brought luffy’s bounty to Shanks. Something he obviously knew would mean a lot to him. I used to think the scene was just there to show us how big a deal Shanks actually is like look at that fun childish alcoholic gang inspired our main hero? He’s actually a super big deal and he used to spar with the strongest character by far we had seen at that point (it wasn’t even close) and they fought on equal footing. It added a new layer of mystery to Shanks.
But it’s also the fact that even now with Mihawk’s bounty Shanks was mentioned and he’s the only one who this was mentioned for. Crocodile is just for his df and intelligence and they don’t mention that he literally tried and almost succeeded in subjugating a country and he was beat by luffy “or smoker given how many marines actually know the truth” even buggy who was literally Shanks’ sworn brother under the pirate king doesn’t get a mention like that. But Shanks and this duel is so integral to Mihawk’s character that it’s mentioned along with the only other long lasting fact we know about him and that is that he is the World’s Strongest Swordsman. Isn’t that fucking insane.
And like I feel insane scrapping all these details together as proof of something because they are all (besides the duel) the barest bones of a connection but god it is actually driving me insane.
And I’m not saying Mishanks is going to become canon or that it should or that I even particularly want it too. What I do want is to see how deeply these two are connected. What are these red strings of fate tying them to each other. Why can’t apparently ten years of little contact sever it? I swear to god if it’s actually nothing much I will lose my fucking mind. If nothing ever comes of all of this I will actually go insane. How can some people look at this and not see foreshadowing!?!?!!

That ask is crazy, what is with some trans people on Tumblr competing with who has it worse? Like I really don't understand as someone who isn't from the West, I'm from India, being trans whether masc or fem is extremely deadly. I understand that words to describe experiences are helpful but why do so many people hate each other within the community?
Lateral aggression and power-jacketing. We’re a bunch of hurt people suffering daily through oppression and it’s much easier to attack each other than to attack our oppressors. So, we find reasons to attack each other (lateral aggression). In marginalized communities often the easiest way is by making a certain group seem like they have privilege over other groups. You’re considered allowed to “punch up” at people you think have power over you, so they attribute power to these groups that they don’t actually have (power-jacketing). This has happened with ace folks and bi folks being told they have straight privilege despite not being straight. This is happening with transmascs being told they have male privilege despite not being treated like cis men. It requires downplaying the suffering of others. It’s a vicious cycle and I hope to see queer people learn to have more compassion towards each other in the future.

DP x DC Phantom Punk: Bat Punk
Decided to bring my Punk Danny AU back since all the Spider Punk stuff I’ve been seeing lately has got me ~inspired~
The Original Phantom Punk DC crossover Post
Just Punk Danny doing his thing, hanging out, maybe jamming with some folk in a random punk house, when, like it usually does in Gotham, shit happens.
Some thugs show up trying to intimidate and threaten the punks that live there. They’re trying to scare ‘em off, make ‘em sell as part of some scheme to demolish the whole block and put up shitty expensive housing.
Now, there’s two things Danny knows: Landlords are bastards, and you got to protect your community
Now he could deal with some thugs in and out of Phantom form, but he just got off the GIW radar and beating hired thugs from a crime family brings the wrong kind of attention to his personal life
His solution?
He puts on a cheap Batman Halloween mask someone had lying around and proceeds to beat the hell out of their kneecaps with a bat decked out in denim covered in spikes and patches
As it turns out, it’s not just a one time thing...
