Note: reader and jason have a system where jason asks the reader what her pain is on a scale from 1-10 (10 being highest)

Jason's key turns in the lock of your shared apartment in Gotham.

To his surprise, the place is dark and lifeless. Upon checking his watch, which read 6:45pm, he noticed the peculiarity of the scene before him.

Usually, you would have started dinner by now, had some sexy 90's R&B playing (which you unashamedly sung along to) and would have greeted him babbling excitedly about what your colleagues thought about your new hairstyle.

But nope, there was nothing.

Though Jason was concerned, he tried to pass it off as a weird occurrence, until he heard a faint retch coming from the other side of the apartment.

Immediately, he parked whatever he was doing and came rushing (sprinting) to you, desperately needing to make sure you're okay.

When he found you in the bathroom hovering over the toilet, the sight clawed a hole in his chest.

You were gripping the edges of the toilet with shaky hands, trying to steady your unstable and shaking body. Your braids were tied back too tight, definitely causing you an uncomfortable and unnecessary headache.

Carefully, Jason stepped in the bathroom and lowered himself to you. He loosened your hair and re-tied it in a more comfortable way and kissed the top of your head.

In your dazed state, you barely recognized his lithe fingers in your hair, too exhausted physically and mentally to focus on anything other than the searing pain in your abdomen.

Finally empty, you reach to flush the toilet when a much bigger, scarred hand takes yours and kisses the back of it before flushing for you.

At this, you look up at him with bleary, tearful and irritated eyes, clearly indicative that you've been feeling like this for a while.

Jason's heart cracks.

Before either of you could speak, Jason pressed his forehead to yours and instructed you to steady your breathing. His hands expertly maneuver you to sit on your bum in front of him; this was not his first rodeo.

Jason was familiar with your illness, and what that meant for you sometimes. With practise, he was attuned to your needs and catered to them willingly. But still, his heart broke a little more every time he saw your body fold in on itself in pain.

When your breathing calmed he kissed your forehead just before another cramp seized your body, and your face crumpled in pain.

"Shit- You're okay sweetheart c'mere. Remember to breathe okay? In. Out."

You nodded lightly as you pushed yourself to move into his lap, the action only making your muscles strain but you were so desperate to feel his warmth you did it anyway.

As you continued to breathe Jason wrapped his strong arms around you and held you to his body, his hands came up to gently rub your lower back where he knew you were hurting.

"What's your number this time, amorcita." Jason asked in a tender voice, as to not upset your headache.

Through sniffles and shakes, you reluctantly surface your buried head from his chest to answer him.

"It was an 8 all day today..." you started, still in pain but able to speak.

"I took the painkillers too late, and they didn't work in time. I'm sorr-"

You're interrupted by Jason pulling you back into him. He would sooner take your pain than hear you apologize for a painful experience you couldn't control.

"Shhhh no sorries, princessa. You know that." He spoke into your hair.

Soon, the wave of pain settled, and you were granted a limited amount of small relief.

"I-I think I should move to the bed now. I don't know how much I have until the next one" you mumbled into his chest.

Through a positive rumble in his chest he agreed, and began to carefully untangle himself from you.

"Can you stand?" Jason asks, his eyes conveying sincerity.

You looked to the floor shook your head in shame. You couldn't believe you had to rely on Jason to help you so much.

"I'm gonna pick you up okay baby?" He says, but his eyes ask for your permission.

Upon granting it, he slips his arms under your body and lifts like you weigh nothing. He carefully walks to the bed, taking extra care in making sure he doesn't hit your head or legs on walls or doorways.

Once at your bedside, he places you down gently and presses a set of kisses to your nose, cheek and forehead. It is then when he notices how frigid your skin is, which worries him. But first, he needs more information.

"How long ago did you take the painkillers, mi vida?" He begins as he crouches to reach your eye level.

With an exasperated sigh, you close your eyes and shrug. Truly you had no idea how long it has been since you've been in such pain, much less since you've taken your last round of painkillers.

Jason returns your sigh, but with one of sadness as he reaches out his hand to absentmindedly rub your sore hips. Remembering your small remedies that help the pain, he stands and begins out the room.

Suddenly your hand grasp his ring and pinky, and he turns to face you again.

You look up at him with tears on your cheeks, silently begging him to stay.

At this, he leans down and captures your lips softly, silently letting you know that he would never do anything you wouldn't want him to.

With your hand still grasping his, he brings your hand to his lips to kiss, before breaking the silence.

"'Tell you what, amorcita. I'm gonna go get you your heating pad and boil some raspberry leaf tea, then i'll climb into bed with you and i'll rub your back as you fall asleep. But you gotta let go of me so I can do it, bien?"

Reluctantly, you took his offer and released his hand before he left a soothing kiss to your hairline and took off.

While he was gone, your were desperately breathing through another wave, trying not to scream or cry out. The pain continued to ebb and flow, but it was pain nonetheless.

When Jason returned with the tea, hot water bottle and a little square of dark chocolate he found you almost asleep, knees up to your chest while clutching your abdomen. He knew you well enough to know that your back is not enjoying the position at all.

He placed the tea and chocolate on your nightstand and carefully took his spot behind you. You slightly woke up at his shifting, but upon Jason's placement of the hot water bottle to your aching abdomen, you relaxed.

Jason breathed a silent breath of gratitude that you're able to rest easier than you were before now that you're comfortable. He moved himself closer to your body, firmly but delicately wrapping his arms around you and stretching out your aching back.

You appreciated this, the pressure releasing on your back and the soothing warmth of your hot water bottle contributing to easing your pains.

Jason retracted one of his arms from your waist in favour of rubbing your sore lower back. A sleepy hum of appreciation followed his ministrations just before you spoke.

"Jason?" you mumbled into your pillow

"Querida?" he replied, semi alert

"Thank you" you finish as you let yourself drift into a light and more comfortable sleep.

A peck to the back of your head is his response.

Jason knows he can't take away your pain. But when it cuts you deep, he'll be your remedy.

Always.

As for food, he isn’t too big on spicy things, don’t ever say that you saw him crying after trying a hot Cheeto.

As for cooking, I’m sorry to say, he does not know how to cook at all. Lived off of ration packs pre 141.

He would sometimes try to re create his mother’s recipes if he ever uncovered them, to keep her memory alive.

It took a lot of practice and a few burnt dishes later, he successfully recreated her shepards pie. His favourite dish from her.

so just as any besties do, @teddybearbutchh and i were talking about the whole 'shax wears a cobra belt' thing, and we might have just dreamt up The Most heartstopping thing to date... but couple of key notes first:

i know people have remarked that shax most obviously wears the belt in the modern scenes, indicating some kind of power play that she pinched it from crowley's flat. issue is - im fairly sure that she wears it in 1941 (you can see a glimpse of it at the end when she's present in the audience between furfur and dagon), which would suggest it leans more towards herons-eat-snakes symbolic explanation. taking one step further, im regarding this as some kind of foreshadowing that there will be some kind of direct conflict between her and crowley

shax is either a social climber, or has incredible amounts of career ambition - probably a bit of both, but im leaning towards the latter. im still also of the mind that the reason she has the ear of the council is because she's an informant (and a good one at that) and her MO is to recruit others to do the dirty work for her... so when she tells furfur that she'll pay him back if he ever gives her information that she can use, it stands to reason that she'd be pretty miffed re: furfur seemingly going maverick to catch aziraphale and crowley in the act. i feel like her smirk at the end of the ep, plus how cold furfur is towards her in ep5, would support this somewhat

^but shax is still armed with the knowledge that there's something between aziraphale and crowley (furfur might not have hard proof anymore but he obviously wasn't lying, not when you consider his confidence from shax's perspective), and to catch them would be tantamount to a promotion

chekhov's gun #1: the derringer

chekhov's gun #2: zombies still roaming around london, with one of them presumably still having access to the bookshop if aziraphale invited her in when she posed as an MI operative

chekhov's gun #3: constant mentions in both 1941 flashbacks of 'the paperwork'

shax makes a point in the bentley to separate out the statement that there were rumours that aziraphale and crowley were "an item", which arguably is a good hop, skip and a jump away from "consorting and collaborating" as furfur termed it

a bit about the holy water: crowley first asks for it in 1862, after an indeterminate number of times/length of time in hell, probably under some kind of torture. he and aziraphale then presumably don't speak until 1941, but he remarks again how easy it would be to get holy water from the church, "it doesn't even have guards!". then it's in 1967 that he plans the heist to rob a church. now believe me, i love the explanation that crowley was simply inspired by good, ol' 007 to make getting the water as dramatic as possible, but. if he was that desperate for it, why not just... tempt someone, or even just ask someone for a bottle of it? from a church? i can't imagine that he'd purposefully wait 26 years for something that he felt was literally life-or-death (so to speak), and then only be reminded of it when JB came out? so, what was keeping him for a quarter of a century?

herein lies the batshit part 3 spec of 1941. shax takes advantage of the situation, to get ahead on the greasy pole; goes up to earth, finds the zombies, recruits them one last time to get into the bookshop - possibly to get ahold of the photograph and take the credit for furfur's scheme. 'lo and behold, aziraphale and crowley are low-key about to jump each other (waving the tired and battered 1941 truther flag), which is just plain excellent for shax - and would fuel the 'rumours' that they were an 'item'. but zombies give themselves away before anything juicy really happens (boo), and some kind of fight ensues.

derringer gets pulled out of the mystery book (bonus points if it's a bible, or something like sense and sensibility), crowley gets shot, probably trying to protect aziraphale, gets discorporated. he's summarily trapped in hell, sorting through the fucking paperwork, until sometime in the 1960s. reinvigorates his scheme to get his hands on holy water, aziraphale hears about it, and gives it to him (now having been confronted with The Direct Consequences hell will have for crowley if anything like this ever happens again), and wards him off from getting too close to aziraphale, because of the danger it poses. "you go too fast for me".

Wait, I love questions like this lol 1) I feel like there are such obvious connections but still, the chemical reactions would be funny ✨ 2) it reminds me of tiktok series I've seen a few creators do which I will now spend several hours tracking down just to hyperlink them here (unless I get distracted by something else.. okay there's one more but I lost steam). If you end up writing something, please feel free to share but also, I apologize if I misinterpreted your question. I wrote everything out then reread it and realized maybe you meant to inquire whether my top faves for each would be friends with each other... which, tbh, I guess is kind of addressed based on the results of this previous ask? Nobara Kugisaki 🤝 BakuSquad - I mean, Ashido and Kugisaki are kind of a no-brainer, no? Except that's not Kugisaki's in to the BakuSquad. No, no. No one joins that band of idiots without the eponymous leader's express invitation and, characterwise, Kugisaki is who Uraraka could be with more intentional fleshing out/personality. She snatched Bakugo's respect by being equally headstrong, aggressive and capable of backing her smack talk up.

Additional Prospects: She would, of course, be on track to intern with Mirko in any capacity for the same reasons above. She would give Todoroki and Fushiguro a hard time in equal measure.

Yuji Itadori 🤝 Eijiro Kirishima - Itadori gets along with everyone. Midoriya is a very obvious choice, as well (sunshine, cinnamon roll, green flag and sunshine, cinnamon roll, green flag), but there is a gravitational pull that keeps two himbos in orbit of one another and I'm not strong enough to deny that. Literally, look at Kirishima and Tetsutetsu. Plus, the physical prowess that follows him from universe to universe makes him an ideal sparring partner for Kiri and an interesting combatant against Bakugo.

Additional Prospects: While he'd generally be in the inner core of the BakuSquad (re: Bakugo and Kirishima), something tells me he'd spend a lot of time with the outer ring as well (supplementary classes with Kaminari and Ashido...). He'd be able to stomach convo with Mineta and, considering the generosity, Mineta would be mindful of toeing the line of decency so he wouldn't lose an ally. Only with Itadori since Kaminari is sometimes just as depraved as the little grape. Itadori would earn Bakugo's respect but Bakugo would still be wary any time Itadori and Midoriya's paths cross. Even though he sees Itadori as an ally, he's still gunning to be number 1 of whatever is at stake and both Itadori and Midoriya are capable of giving him a run for his money.

Megumi Fushiguro 🤝 Kyouka Jirou - TBH this could have gone so many ways. Kaminari would be all over invading Fushiguro's personal space as soon as he debuted, much to Fushiguro's dismay. He would be a great fit with Shinso too but... neither of them would go out of their way to socialize unless someone extroverted forced the issue, let's be for real. They would also hate that. But Jirou's mellow and shares an interest in music so she wouldn't be entirely grating to be around and I think they'd just kind of mesh well without overcrowding one another.

Additional Prospects: That's not to say Kaminari still wouldn't be a force of nature in including Fushiguro in class 1A hijinks. I just think Fughiguro would prefer the company of less volatile personalities like Ojiro, Shoji, Koda and Tokoyami. He can't help but attract extroverts like there's blood in the water. He and Todoroki would, of course, get along to an extent but I don't think Fushiguro would tolerate constant mention of Endeavor and Todoroki's subsequent family issues. Todoroki's of the talk it out camp and Fushiguro would prefer to never discuss it again. One ill timed trauma dump and Fushiguro would be fixing his hands to summon Mahoraga.

Kento Nanami 🤝 Naomasa Tsukauchi - Nanami would consort with and tolerate a number of adults: Rock Lock and Aizawa come to mind because they are rational and understand that kids are meant to be kids. Tsukauchi in particular is far enough from the fray to suit Nanami's passing desire to leave the chaos of his moral obligations (as a sorcerer or whatever he's imbued with in universe). But he's also patched in enough to be the tip as to when Nanami needs to resume his responsibilities.

Additional Prospects: Depending on where Oboro is in his origin story, I think he'd also be a necessary counter balance to Nanami's staunch, straight lacedness in the same way Haibara is. Haibara and Oboro would be a force to be reckoned with for all parties considered. Nanami only meets up with Aizawa when he knows Present Mic is on patrol or DJ'ing. Also, The Black Parade once summoned both he and Tokoyami but they never spoke of it again.

Satoru Gojo 🤝 Keigo Takami - One could make an argument for All Might (strongest and strongest in each respective universe) but... I think Hawks and Gojo's predisposition to be weapons at an early age kind of embodies the burden that Gojo otherwise carries alone. Always looking to quell that isolation, Hawks would understand. PLUS, who else has a "strong" moral code (... using figuratively as applied to both) and a bluntness to keep others in check? People overlook how silly goofy Geto has to be to keep up with Gojo. The three of them would wreak havoc, naturally.

Additional Prospects: Gojo would go out of his way to endear himself to Aizawa, as well. Because how grating to be adopted by yet another loud extrovert? Gojo would not be successful but, for the kids, Aizawa would do as needed. Aizawa probably sees Gojo as a slightly more competent teacher than All Might. He likely also recognizes what festers under Gojo's facade of frivolous indifference in the same way he sees past All Might's bravado. Student wise, Gojo would still gravitate toward the most unhinged for mentorship: his Big Three + Midoriya and Bakugo. Iida might be demented enough but the knife handed attention to rules would not work out in the long run.

GOD! EPISODE 13 IS BITTERSWEET, but I think this is by far the episode where like 80-90% of the scenes were happy. So I love it!

📍I knew they'd find nothing in the panic room, it's kinda frustrating but what's new? At least Hyun-woo had a back-up plan to fuck up Eun-seong and I can't wait for him and his mother to rot in jail. But WAIT--hear me out, if Seul-hee finds out that Eun-seong went to Germany to follow Hae-in, this bitch would be livid and since she sees every member of the Hong family as an obstacle, she'll most likely going to do something to eliminate Hae-in. What if Eun-seong sacrifices himself and dies in the process to save her, then Mo Seul-hee will lose her mind and she'd spend the rest of her remaining days locked up in a mental asylum, alone and lonely. I think that would be a perfect ending for her and Eun-seong don't y'all think?

📍Aunt Beom-ja and hubby number 4 moments, Hae-in and Mama Hong slowly rebuilding their relationship, Baek and Hong parents being besties, Soo-cheol continuing to stand up for his family...I appreciate these little family moments so much I just don't want it to end.

📍Team QOT be blessing us with lots and lots of BaekHong moments!!! Ah, I feel so spoiled as a fan, I never considered their divorce as legit, but more like they went back to the way they were...you know, carefree, happy, being so in-love, making great memories. I love that they re-created the honeymoon scene in episode 1, then the first OST to ever be released (The Reasons of my Smiles by BSS) started playing in the background, it felt so nostalgic to me.

📍I also love the fact that Hae-in's parents, especially her mom didn't argue when Hae-in decided to move-in with Hyun-woo in his apartment. It feels like they are finally giving their full support and blessing for BaekHong to become a married couple. Also, those hubby and wifey moments made me smile a lot!

📍But Hyun-woo once again going above and beyond to make Hae-in happy 🥹🥹🥹 hubby really made the "snow fall in October" so wifey could witness it first hand, then hearing his most genuine laugh when Hae-in confessed that he was his first love was just the best. Those scenes were just so good it made me wish that they could stay like that.

📍But of course, those happy moments won't last because well...who says we can have it all? Now, if this was a typical Kdrama and the lead character would be put in Hae-in's situation, normally we could expect the lead character to take the risk and the other lead as well the people on their side would help her remember or perhaps create new memories. However, I do appreciate the fact that Park Ji-eun didn't romanticize that kind of situation but instead gave us the reality of how complicated it is to be in Hae-in's shoes. It's easy to say, "Oh it's fine Hyun-woo's gonna help her remember," and this guy bless his heart would be willing to do that, but what about Hae-in?

As much as I really, really want her to get the surgery, I do understand why she refused after finding out about the possible side effects. It's not just about losing her memories, it's about losing her loved ones. It's so fucking cruel because if she doesn't take the surgery, they'll lose her, if she does then it's the other way around. She could wake up becoming a completely different person, forgetting about how much she loves her family, her husband and it will hurt them really badly. She loves Hyun-woo so much that she doesn't want to lose that love she has for him in exchange for extending her life. If she loses that love, then what's the point of living? I still do hope for some miracle though, because she deserves to live a long life with Hyun-woo.

ANYWAY, Since episode 14 is coming up I am mentally and emotionally preparing myself for a pretty painful episode. Next week is finale week and I hope, I REALLY hope that BaekHong will get a happy ending they both deserve.

It's no secret I don't particularly like my Sy's in the military, which makes it all the more impressive that @sillyrabbit81 wrote one that I did fall head over heels in love with! He's in Even if you don't mean it, and if you haven't read that, go do it now. And I do mean that. Then, perhaps my all-time favorite fic so far has to be The Fallen Wolves Brotherhood. Maybe I should elaborate on that, probably, but instead I'm just gonna say: Bikers. Proceed with caution, because when that next chapter hits, you're gonna have to pause Criminal Minds. I'm also going to leave the link to Prying here, because it's so fucking dirty it melts my brain a little every time I re-read it.

I think I read this entire (or almost entire?) series in a single night while I was in bed. Couldn't stop... The Chase Re-Watch

I love this episode. We get to see the Dangerous Ladies™ in action, & the fight scenes that take up the second half are just so fun.

I think that Avatar is consistently good at setting up interpersonal conflicts that feel engaging & real. Toph isn't instantly besties with the Gaang, & that's not all that surprising considering her brash personality. Mainly, she clashes with Katara & this is delightful to see. Katara is often designated as the most emotionally mature member of the group & in some ways, she is. But she's also prone to outbursts & she hates getting blown off. As someone who loves Katara's character, I actually love seeing this more petty side of her & I would love to lean into it in fics more often. I think Katara has certain things that trigger her anger & make her get mean & laziness & selfishness seem to contribute to this. It's also relevant that Katara was raised in a culture that values collaboration. The Southern Water Tribe is small. Everyone has to work together. So, Toph's more individualistic approach was bound to get under Katara's skin.

But what's really going on with Toph? Part of my reason for doing a re-watch is to understand the characters & their layered motivations more. I've watched this episode a number of times & always puzzled over Toph's behavior. She is the member of the Gaang I feel like I have the least solid grasp on as a character if I'm being honest. I have issues with Suki as well, but they're mostly due to her being underdeveloped & not given enough screen time, & we'll get to her later. For now, let's talk about Toph.

Toph has just left behind her life of wealth. I've always taken her refusal to help set up camp as rich-kid lazy behavior. To an extent, I stand by that, but let's dig deeper into the "why."Toph has always had servants doing everything for her. But I think that her insistence that she "can carry her own weight" feels important, & implies that there's more going on than just laziness. She also snaps that she "gave up everything she had to teach Aang earth-bending." I think it's worth noting that Toph, while she wants a life of adventure, was also initially against joining the Gaang. She is, after all, only twelve. So, part of her attitude problem has to do with being away from home & probably trying to act tough when in reality, she's overwhelmed. I think that just doing things for herself feels like a big deal for her. She doesn't know how to operate in a group & can't understand what Katara wants from her. Maybe if Katara was more direct rather than dancing around the issue, that would help. Katara is indirect in her pushes to get Toph to help, & it's possible Toph doesn't really understand the crux of the issue & it would help to have it explained to her bluntly. So, different communication styles are at play here too.

It's also relevant that because they're being chased, everyone is tired & on edge so tensions are high. This is just a recipe for disaster. I loved seeing Aang snap too for similar reasons that I loved seeing Katara get petty. Aang is usually not an angry person. Don't get me wrong, he has anger. He certainly has a lot of deep-seated rage over what happened to his people, but this isn't about that. What I'm saying is that in interpersonal conflicts, Aang can be childish but he's typically not one to start yelling at people easily. I think two big factors pushed Aang over the edge here. 1. He's exhausted, & he's frustrated by the ongoing tension. 2. Toph decided to bring Appa into it & blame him.

Aang is right to be protective over Appa. Appa saves the Gaang's lives constantly. He's the one carrying the group on his back through all of this. Also, protecting your pet above everything is just a mood.

Still, after leaving everything behind Toph is ganged up on & she's had it. She leaves. Then we get one of my favorite Iroh scenes yet:

Iroh: I poured your tea because I wanted to and for no other reason.

Toph: People see me and think I'm weak. They want to take care of me, but I can take care of myself, by myself.

Iroh You sound like my nephew, always thinking you need to do things on your own, without anyone's support. There is nothing wrong with letting the people who love you help you. Not that I love you, I just met you.

The joke at the end gets them both laughing & Iroh goes on to explain that he is tracking Zuko & watching out for him. The conversation helps Toph, not because she relates to Zuko (who is just a hypothetical person to her right now anyway) but because she sees that Iroh needs Zuko.

This line at the end shows that Toph actually got more out of Iroh than he was perhaps willing to admit to himself: "Oh, and about your nephew, maybe you should tell him that you need him, too."

Iroh is another character I struggle to understand, though I feel like reading @Peony-Pearl's metas & thoughts on him has helped me gain insight. I think that Iroh was so focused on helping Zuko & looking out for him, he didn't consider that it might be mutually beneficial to their reconciliation if he just admitted that he needed Zuko too, but Toph figured it out right away. Also, props to Toph for her emotional intelligence here. She is brash so her ability to catch onto the nuances of relationships is easy to overlook, but it's there.

The fight scenes were probably my favorite parts of the episode, but I don't have much to say about them other than that they were badass. Ty Lee, Mai, & Azula are terrifying villains. When they show up, it's a lot scarier than when Zuko or Zhao showed up. They just feel so hyper-competent & unstoppable. There's a true "oh shit" feeling that drops when they pop up. Also, @Theowritesfiction mentioned that Ty Lee & Sokka's fight & her commenting on his cuteness afterward is a good reason Ty Lee/Sokka should be a more popular ship & I totally agree! Also, Ty Lee & Mai working seamlessly together for murder goals is cute.

I will never not love Azula imitating Zuko to explain to Aang who she is. Especially because Zuko later goes on to imitate Azula when planning how to get the Gaang to let him in. Siblings™!

The fight scene at the end with Aang, Azula, & Zuko is iconic. Again, I just don't have a lot to say about the fight scenes other than "neat!" The moment when Aang laughs at Zuko getting called "Zuzu" is a favorite for me, it's just so funny.

And of course, Azula doesn't truly "surrender with honor." She attacks Iroh. This was a smart move because it was a sure way to get Zuko to stop fighting & distract everyone while she ran away. Azula's devious mind shows itself in her every move.

Then we have a moment that gets me every time. Zuko chases away the Gaang when Katara tries to help. I felt this way the first time I watched the show & I stand by it now: This was the moment (so far) that has made me the most furious with Zuko. I'm not saying it's his actual lowest moment or the worst thing he's done or that I don't get that he sees them as enemies, I'm saying it makes me personally really angry. Iroh was just talking about how Zuko insists on doing everything on his own, & here he goes, demonstrating this flaw. If he'd accepted Katara's help as a healer, she could've possibly saved Iroh right there. If Iroh had died, Zuko would be at least partially responsible for turning away help. It's just very frustrating & infuriating for me.

For the Iconic Behavior (behavior I personally think is Iconic) competition: Mai & Ty Lee get 100 points each for the fight with Sokka & Katara. Sorry, but the water siblings lost if it wasn't for Appa so they get none. Maybe I should've put Appa & Momo into this competition tbh but it's too late in the game now. Katara gets 100 points for the "I'M COMPLETELY CALM" moment though & Sokka gets 100 for putting up with the comments about how he doesn't count because he's not a bender. Katara gets 500 for saving Aang's life. I don't think Aang did anything special enough during this fight to earn any but he gets 300 for standing up for Appa. Azula gets 100 for the Zuko imitation. Oh, & I almost forgot it's Sokka who coins the phrase "Dangerous Ladies." Another 100. Points as they stand so far for Book 2:

just me puzzling through some issues there have been re: posting HBM online

So, HBM is posted on 4 different sites: Royal Road, Inkitt, Tapas, and Webnovel.

Episode one has now been up for *checks calendar* 3 months and 10 days. According to the analytics from each of those sites, HBM has been viewed, across all sites: 1,893 times. Now, each new chapter counts as a new view, so it hasn't been 1,893 people, but only Inkitt shows me the views on each chapter (as far as I can tell) so idk exactly how many people just pulled up the first chapter or whatever and then bounced. Royal Road says the average views are 21 (out of the total views on that site of 494) but I don't know enough about math anymore to be able to properly interpret/estimate how many people actually finished all the chapters. Anyway, none of that really matters

What matters is: of all 1,893 views across all four sites, HBM has gotten exactly 7 comments.

6 are from the same person, the fiancee of one of my best friends who read the story as a favor to said best friend. The other comment is from me replying to one of her comments LMAO

Although all four sites allow and encourage reviews of stories, it has gotten no reviews, nor any ratings.

I'm going to assume, if only for my own sanity, that this is very normal. That readers in this day and age on these sites are not inherently inclined to comment/like/review/rate random stories they read, even if they did enjoy them enough to read all the way to the end of Episode One. That if there isn't some other factor (like being my bestie-in-law) to nudge them toward actually engaging with the story, they won't.

Part of it is also an issue of how I posted Ep 1 I think. I, for the most part, just dumped the whole thing on there at once when, from what I've seen, it would have been much smarter to update one chapter per day until the whole episode was out. However that's more factoring in to bringing in new readers, not necessarily getting readers to engage. I think.

(This is all completely new to me and I am just theorizing for like 99% of this)

So what do I do about this? Aside from just post more of the story (which I will be doing soon, hopefully!) and hoping that as people get to know the characters and the story more, they're more inclined to engage?

If I put myself in the mindset of a reader (who is not also a writer and therefore doesn't immediately then put myself in the mindset of the person who wrote what I am reading) then I think I would just not really. Think to interact with the story unless it like REALLY grabbed me and made me Feel a big Feel. I think it wouldn't even occur to me that the writer needs me. I would see myself as just a number to the writer, and I would think "oh they're just going to keep doing what they're doing no matter what I do or say, so why take the time?"

Also there's the fact that HBM is free, right? I want it to always be free if I can afford to do that because I want it to be as accessible as possible. No paywall, and if people want to and are able to support me financially then they can and hopefully will.

Some might think that readers would be like "wow this person is offering something they have sunk years of their life into for free I am so grateful for that, I should do what I can to show that appreciation and let them know I support what they're doing!" but in fact it's the Free element that emphasizes this kinda mentality that it's just. It's just content, right? It's just online content and I am just a number. I don't matter to the writer.

It's weird how that works. But I totally get it because I am totally that way with, for example, video content. Like there's that whole "like comment and subscribe if you like this video!" thing and that always felt so impersonal and like the youtuber or whatever was just saying it because other people always said it and they didn't even actually care about the comments/feedback they were just trying to play to the algorithm so it didn't actually matter if I did those things. I just always saw it as a creator trying to increase their numbers because "bigger number better person" and all that.

Okay so what do I do with all of this that I've just talked through?

oh gods oh no oh no how could you do this to me Intelligent Systems [A'lear part 3]

(Spoilers up to Chapter 3 of Fire Emblem: Engage.)

A'lear has a weird dream in which everything is on fire and she's red (hair, eyes) and she's grinning menacingly at Lumera.

It unsettles her, but Marth is there to comfort her. He's there because he was watching over her as she slept. She wore his ring to bed, which he doesn't mind, and after a thousand years together it would feel weird to be apart.

Historians would later say Marth and A'lear were besties.

But never mind that! The castle is under attack! Unknown enemies have breached the defences and now they're almost at the Ring Vault! Where the Rings are!

But... how!? Wasn't this castle supposed to be magically warded against the Corrupted? And isn't it a castle? Like, an extra secure, extra-defensible building?

To answer the first question, it's humans attacking. As for the other questions, let's have Framme explain:

Queen Lumera is up ahead in the Ring Vault, fending off invaders. To reach her, A'lear and co. will need to fight their way across a long bridge-hallway full of soldiers.

They begin making their way there, trying to avoid the attention of the pegasus knights hovering outside the breached walls. It doesn't work, and at the end of turn 1, a lot of enemy soldiers start swarming towards them.

Thankfully, the cavalry arrives in the form of the crown prince of Firene and his retainers.

Prince Alfred (lance cavalry) is a gentle soul who's obsessed with strength training and putting on muscle. Etie (archer) is a gym junkie who attaches weights to her teacups so that she's always training. Boucheron (axe infantry) is a kindly big fellow who is not obsessed with workouts, but is already kind of buff.

They're fun characters, and I expect they'll mostly be on the backbench by Chapter 10 (*). 🥲

We're introduced to a few more types of unit class here. Of the four we've already seen, Cavalry is self-explanatory, Mystical is for infantry mages and ignores enemy terrain bonuses, Qi Adept is for special supports and grants Chain Guard, and Dragon is for dragons (really cool OCs with two-tone hair, and Queen Lumera) (**).

Archers are Covert, a designation shared with snipers and thieves. Covert units get twice the usual Avoid bonus from trees/etc, which this map has exactly zero of.

Axe fighters, and most generic melee infantry, are considered Backup units. They have access to Chain Attacks — when an ally attacks an enemy in Boucheron/etc.'s weapon range (adjacent, in the case of Boucheron's iron axe), he'll throw in a free attack before his ally's first attack. A Chain Attack is always 80% hit, 0% crit, and chips away 10% of an enemy's HP (***). To be clear, this ignores everyone's stats except for enemy HP, making it an amazing tool for taking down enemies with stupidly high Def/Res.

(On the flipside, the existence of Chain Attacks means you can't just throw a tank or dodge tank into an oncoming mob and expect them to last the turn. This is an amazing addition to the Fire Emblem formula and I love it.)

The battle begins in earnest.

A'lear has Etie kill a few enemy fliers here and there, but only when the numbers need thinning.

Framme punches a pegasus so hard its rider falls off, which is pretty sick.

And the whole team fights its way to the far end of the bridge, where the enemy leader tries to cut us off.

The boss has Veteran+, which makes her unbreakable and negates effective damage against her. (For example, Marth's "effective against armour" rapier is no better than the Libération.) The majority of the bosses we encounter in Maddening mode will have this skill, which is... infuriating. Saddening, even.

Thankfully, it's possible for everyone to do a bit of damage against Abyme, chipping away at her health bar. And Clanne the mage can pummel her around, because like most armored units, she has next to no Resistance to magic.

Abyme is defeated, to be seen again.

Finally, to the Ring Vault! Where the Rings are!

(To recap: this vault accounts for nearly half the world's Emblem Ring supply. Whoever collects all twelve Emblems gains untold power.)

In a cutscene, A'lear encounters a creepy dark mage. How creepy, you ask? Well, they use magic to disappear... and reappear behind her!

The creepy dark mage has little time for banter, and casts a spell at A'lear called Major Character Death.

(actually the spell appears to be Obscurité, the same one Sombron was using in the Prologue. It's characterised by that purple cylindrical shape and the miasma-looking effect. Perhaps... could this attacker possibly work for Sombron, the only character known to covet the twelve Emblem Rings?)

Anyway, A'lear stands there in shock. Don't just stand there, A'lear! Move!

Thankfully, Lumera is there to throw A'lear out of the way and...

...oh, oh gods, that looks like it hurt. They're... they're not going to kill her, are they? Intelligent Systems wouldn't just kill off the protagonist's parent like that, would they?

Lumera then scares the dark mage off with some form of dragon laser attack. With that, the attack on the castle is over, but... at what cost?

A'lear cradles her wounded mother in her arms. In the scarce moments they have left, mother and daughter weep.

The others arrive. (Framme tries using a staff on Lumera. It doesn't work, but now Youtubers can't add "just use Heal!" to their unimaginative "Top 58 Plot Holes" listicles.)

How could a Divine Dragon be unable to heal from this? In the scarce moments she has left, Lumera explains that she gave most of her lifeforce/power to A'lear, over the latter's thousand countless years of convalescence. "I hoped it would be enough to bring you back to me someday..."

"...but now, it would seem that I am completely spent."

And so that's it.

In the scarce moments she has left, Lumera tells A'lear not to blame herself. This is an expression of her unending love for her, that there is nothing she wouldn't do for her beloved daughter.

And here: the Ring of the Holy Knight. May Emblem Sigurd protect A'lear.

Lumera says she had really hoped to give A'lear that red and blue ring at some point, but...

Oh, the Emblem Rings! Don't forget about those!

Lumera uses the scarce moments she has left to entreat her daughter to collect the remaining Emblem Rings. Do not allow Sombron (presumably) to collect the other rings. Collect the 12 Rings and seal Sombron away. Only... with the power of the Twelve Emblems...

Then, through choked sobs, Lumera says:

“When your scattered memories return to you, you must fight on with the utmost divinity. I believe in you, my child!”

And... that's it. Lumera is dying. There's nothing to be done.

In the scarce moments she has left, Lumera reassures A'lear that no matter how brief their reunion, her heart is so full. She's so happy and full of joy.

Lumera pinkie promises A'lear that she'll always be with her. The two of them. Always.

Her grip slackens. "Mother!", A'lear cries out, but there is no answer.

(Before today, Lumera was the last of the Divine Dragons. Now, that woeful title falls to A'lear.)

In the scarce— nah, I'm messing with you, there's only so much death scene Lumera's allowed to have. She's gone now.

(*) The problem is growths (and the lack of Greenhouse). I like Etie's personality, but besides her good Strength growth she has median-or-worse growths for every other stat. (IIRC the only thing stopping her from being the worst return-on-investment unit in the game is that Vander exists.) Boucheron has the opposite problem — his strength growth is lower than everyone but a few of the mages. His HP basically always increases on level up, making him pretty tanky, but if he can't occasionally hit hard then tanky alone doesn't cut it.

Alfred's growths are actually ok, with his default special class suggesting a "heavy cavalry" defensive build. The problem is that he doesn't start with enough Def to fit that role at first, and by the time he catches up on defence he's behind on all the offensive stats.

(**) Dragon classes—which really just means A'lear's personal classes—get bonuses when Engaged with any Emblem that range from "okay" to "pretty good". Of the non-DLC Emblems, only Corrin or Byleth are noticeably different when engaged with A'lear like this.

I will probably be moving A'lear to Paladin in the mid-game. She'll be weak to dragon-slaying weapons and anti-cav weapons, and I'll miss her combo with Corrin, but I'll take the trade-off.

Elorcan. Where do I start? They had enemies-to-lovers, they had fake dating and fake marriage, height difference (the most stark I've ever seen lmao) and hates-everyone-but-their-love. Oh, and a shit ton of angst. Chef's kiss. (Still pissed about "So Lorcan did" fade-to-balck, though. 😤)

Chaorene. I kept switching up number 3 and 4 for a long time, but settled with them on this spot. I honestly adore their dynamic so, so much. From the moment they meet, it's so snarky and bright. They take no shit from anyone, not even each other, and the healing journey they go on together is so lovely to witness. I also think they are the most realistic couple in the series. They love each other so much, and are extremely protective, but they also know when to let the protective instincts take a backseat to do what needs to be done. I love that so much.

Rowaelin. Their undying, unconditional devotion to each other is so beautiful. The reason I put them here and not above is just that they were together by the 5th book, and I was really happy (if you had asked me to rank the ships after QoS, they would definitely been 2nd, I was such a sucker for them). And personally, I like the build-up to getting together more than when ships are already together. But aside from that, I really love them.

Lysaedion. I really love them, and I wish we got more of them being happy together. But I was so happy to read they are getting married AAAAAAAH.

Nestaq. He loved her before he ever saw her, need I say more? Please, they are so precious! I wish we got more of them too, but they're happy and so am I.

Borte and Yeran: Yes, I am going to unclude secondary ships too. God, I was dying to see more of them. Acting like you hate in public, but actually are in love and Shor show it behind closed doors? Beautiful. Lovely. I want to know more about them.
