#saw mp for the second time tonight#overall my thoughts didn’t change much from the first watch#I think it is a wonderfully done film#it is simplistically beautiful#the characters especially patrick feel wonderfully complex while still feeling attainable#they tell the story differently in the book but I love the way the movie tells it as well#especially the cut back scenes so you see the patrick and tom angle after seeing the tom and marion angle for the first portion#the cinematography is absolutely beautiful and the color grading is superb#the way marion and tom are always in cooler light or an almost chilly ambiance versus patrick and tom even sometimes with marion it’s all#warm light and flushed cheeky and comfort#and the score ! is unreal#the way the music ebbs and flows with conflict or cuts out entirely in moments of pure vulnerability so all you’re left with is#a puff of breath or a scratch of fabric#it’s beautiful#I obviously think harry is wonderful but david and emma are phenomenal in their roles#and linus plays a fabulous older tom to the way he speaks to the mannerisms it’s just beyond#I think this movie is important in its simplicity#it comments on the time period while not making it feel like a period piece or some huge statement#I genuinely genuinely think it’s a perfect comfort film#rainy day slightly sad feeling lost needing hope whatever it is you’re searching for I think you can find a piece of it in this film#next bit i’m gonna talk a little spoilery so don’t read if you don’t want but !#I really found myself appreciating marion’s final scene so much more the second time where earlier in the movie when they’re singing in the#car and she sticks her hand out the window and the end is a continuation of that as she’s racing away from the sea is really beautiful#donttttt even get me started on patrick and toms last scene my theatre tonight was even quieter than the first time I saw it but the#collective gasp half sob half sigh of relief of hope of sadness of happiness that filled the room#makes me so so so glad I saw it in theatres as much as an audience can sometimes be more annoying than great I think that moment made it#it’s not a blow your mind holy hell type of movie but it’s an important film I think#and most importantly I can see it withstanding the ultimate test of time#I think everyone should see it and better yet in a theater if you’re able but it’s a movie I will definitely find myself watching again#and again in the future 🤍

Bruce: What movie should I pick for family night?
Steph: Goncharov.
The other batkids: *agreement sounds*
Bruce: Uh, okay. What's it about?
Tim: You never heard of Goncharov, B?? Is the best mafia movie of all times.
Duke: Wow, Mr. Wayne, Dick told me you loved mafia movies, but you don't even know Goncharov?
Bruce: I'm not a big movie fan or a Scorcese fan, I guess this one jusy slided me by.
Damian: T-T I'm disapointed with you father, you have to be a truly uncultured swinne to have never wached such a masterpiece as Goncharov 1973 directed by Matteo JWHJ0715 and Martin Scorcese.
Dick: *who is more of a little shit than people give him credit for* He should know it! We watched it on our early novie nights. You don't remember, B? *sad eyes*
Bruce: *who did sleep during most of his first family movie nights with Dick* I-I-I'm soo sorry, Dick. We can watch it again today? Make new memories?
Dick: I guess.
Jason: The fact you never watched it diminish the value of a critical discussion of certain aspects, like the religous symbolism of the market scene with the two forbiden fruits with Katya seing christianity in the apple while Sophia represented the paganism with the pomegranate, that can only be appreciated in a second view.
Cass: Finally someone is talking about the pomegranate and the apple.
Steph: Can we talk about Mario's glass motif and how it subverts expectations since normally broken glass represents loss but here is Mario's obcession, not seing the beauty in the fragments - or in the members of his mafioso empire- in a drive for the perfection and assumed superior quality of the whole - his trials to be like the tradicional criminal families going against change and his facistic suprass of individuality - to the point were when he finally fixes his broken glass vase to perfection his most trustworthy allies - namely Andrey and Joseph - have betrayed him in one way or another.
Bruce: *completly lost* This does sound like a great movie!
Barbara: It is one. And you would know that if you had any ressemblance of culture.
Dick: Honestly Bruce I can't belive you sleeped and missed such a perfect movie like Goncharov.
Alfred: *entering the living room* What's going on here?
Tim: B never saw Goncharov.
Alfred: *who has absolutly no idea what they are talking about* Really? Master Bruce, I thought I had teached you better than that! Goncharov is a mark of cinematography!

If there was one mistake Max made when it came to your relationship, it was agreeing to binge tv shows with you.
And yet, he fell for the trap every single time.
Personally, Max was never one to get overly invested in tv shows or movies. He would enjoy them, there were a few he wouldn’t mind rewatching on the odd rainy day. But he never got attached, whether it be to the show or the plot or the characters.
Not in the way you did.
He had to admit that he did find it adoring just how invested you got. If you liked the show, you were all in. You had your favourite characters and your comfort episodes. For the short time you watched the show until you finished, it was a hefty topic in most of your conversations. You got angry and sad and upset and excited over these shows. Max had never really experienced anything like it.
And usually—usually—he genuinely did find it adorable.
But sometimes there were moments like this one where he majorly regretted watching the show with you.
“I just don’t get how everybody can’t see the clear endgame!”
“Mhm.”
“Like, from music and cinematography and—”
“Mhm.”
“She has to end up with Conrad! She has to! I mean,” you paused for a moment as you let out a scoff. “Who would choose Jeremiah? He just lurks in the background with his creepy blue eyes and weird stare!”
“Mhm,” Max hummed like he had been doing for the last fifteen minutes before he paused. He frowned, opening his eyes to look over at you. “Wait, you don’t think my blue eyes are creepy, right?”
“Of course not, baby,” you murmured with a soft smile. “You have pretty ocean eyes. Jeremiah Fisher has the eyes of a white walker.”
Max snorted.
“I’m serious, Max. They stare into your soul.”
“I think you forget that I watched the show with you, Trouble,” he murmured as his eyes fell shut again, taking in a deep breath as he desperately tried to fall asleep like his body was begging him to do so.
But you had just finished the last episode of season two, you were riled up, and now instead of going to bed and cuddling with him like he wanted, you were sat criss-crossed on the bed as you rambled away about a show Max stopped thinking about the second the tv turned off.
“He is just the clear second option when Conrad is there, all dreamy and perfect and still in love with her and—”
You never got a chance to finish your sentence before Max had sat up, his fingers tangled in your hair as he kissed you mid-sentence. You felt breathless and flushed, and it didn’t take long for you to sink into his embrace as he pulled you back down onto the bed until you were lying on top of him.
“I know you’re angry but you need sleep,” he murmured against your lips as he settled his arms around your middle. “We both do.”
“Mhm,” you hummed, still a little dazed from the kiss.
“And I would prefer to have my girlfriend in my arms rather than talking about some other man being dreamy or whatever you said,” Max added.
You laughed lightly as you nuzzled yourself further into his embrace. “You are Team Conrad though, right?”
“Of course, Trouble,” he murmured and pressed a kiss to the crown of your head. “Now for the love of god, please fucking go to sleep.”

I think I cracked it you guys. A part of why Elvis (2022) has such a hold on me (and why you should watch it too if you haven’t already).
The first time I watched it, I didn’t really have any expectations - I wasn’t a fan of Elvis, because my mother hated him, and I grew up without any real exposure to him or his music. I also wasn’t a fan of Baz Luhrmann, because I found his directing style to be too over-the-top, chaotic, and truthfully - obnoxious. So neither of those two big names attached to it were a draw-in for me. And on top of that, I didn’t know Tom Hanks was in it, and I didn’t know who Austin Butler was - not to mention there’s been an abundance of music biopics lately. The only thing that captured my attention was how accurately the trailer portrayed the fangirl spirit. I was like ‘Yeah, that’s exactly what it’s like. I can relate to that’, lol. So with that being the only thing that held my interest, I put it on and just shrugged and thought ‘Who knows, this might be fun’.
I was completely blown away.
I had seen a few clips of Elvis prior to this at some point in my life, so I had just enough reference in my memory to go on while I watched Austin do his thing, and he nailed it. It took no time at all for you to feel like you were actually watching Elvis Presley, not just some guy playing him. Austin Butler was flawless - he’s received a tremendous amount of praise for his performance, and quite frankly - I don’t think there could ever be enough praise for what he was able to accomplish here. It is one of the best performances of all time, and that is no exaggeration. It was so exciting - the amount of movie magic (that’s been sorely lacking from films lately) was on full display here, and it gave me new life. I felt a real connection to a completely different era in our history, a connection to a whole other generation of people/fans, and to a music legend that I knew almost nothing about, and who pop culture had twisted into some mythical caricature of himself. This film accomplishes so much, and I was caught up in a whirlwind of something truly eye-opening and magical. The main takeaway I had from my first time viewing was pure excitement and adrenaline, from just being transported somewhere else entirely, both emotionally and spiritually, and from unlearning some misconceptions I had about Elvis Presley. And, as a bonus, I now had a new celebrity crush in Austin Butler (and we all know - stumbling across someone new to thirst over will always be a profound part of the fangirl experience, lol).
The second time I watched it, I was going in still riding that high that I felt - and I was ready to immerse myself into full, thirsty fangirl mode. And obviously I did thirst - but by the end of the film, I was so incredibly emotional. I cried so much, and felt so sad. Of course, I felt sad by the end the first time I watched it too - Elvis died tragically early, and the way the movie highlighted his final performance was so effectively heartbreaking and moving. But I think the more positive feelings I had experienced before had prevented me from sinking too low into my feelings. But by that second viewing, man… the dam just broke, and I was legitimately mourning this man. I’m not kidding when I say this is probably the best biopic I’ve ever seen, and possibly one of the best movies period that I’ve ever seen. I cannot express strongly enough how much it truly resonates with me.
Anyway, my whole point in saying that I cracked it, I say as a fangirl through-and-through - I think the two biggest impacts that can ignite a fangirl’s spirit into a full, dazzling and glorious blaze is: thirst and heartbreak. And this movie provided both of those things in spades. It’s so beautiful to watch - Austin’s beautiful, the storytelling is beautiful, the cinematography is beautiful, the care, dedication, and craft is beautiful. To me, it is absolutely perfect, and it has completely taken over my mind, heart, and soul. I cannot recommend this film highly enough. It is everything to me right now, and the more people who are willing to give it a chance and enjoy it, the better.

The most beautiful image in The Loyal Pin...
According to me and me alone!
If you want to dive into my overthinking brain and see me nerd about photography and why I think this particular shot is the best so far...
Tumblr media
Then jump after the cut because it's gonna be a kinda long post!
Before episode seven falls upon us, I want to talk about one scene that makes me lose my mind and that previously commented on Twitter (because I refuse to call it X).
I’m sure there are more prepared people out there to talk about this, but my very amateurish ass can’t stop the word vomit I’m about to post.
I love photography and cinematography.
I love The Loyal Pin and, of course, FreenBecky.
I didn’t come here to tell you how beautiful TLP is, we all agree of its beauty. But, there’s a scene from Episode 6 that I can’t take out of my head for many reasons. If they did this fully knowing what they wanted from this, then they have all my respect! But even if it was a more instinctive choice, I still want to praise them for the shot!
I’ll begin by saying that movies and series can tire our eyes. We have less than seconds to react to the images thrown at us. Some directors make an effort to film in a way that we don’t get tired, that we don’t have to work much to focus on what they want us to see. I won’t go too deep into this topic because it is not the reason why I'm posting this rant.
I’ll try give a short explanation:
Here, we have a medium close-up shot, obviously the point is their faces and their feelings.
Tumblr media
Then we jump to the next cut.
Tumblr media
And here the magic happens!
Once the image changes, our eyes don’t move! We might not notice because it’s a cut instead of a fade, but this is what it looks like when we merge both images together!
Tumblr media
With that our of the way, let’s get to the main point!
First, this is a beautiful Wide Shot! It contains so much more information than we can think. And I want everyone to admire it!
This one feels powerful and it moved us because they’re placed in one of the four intersecting lines when divided in thirds.
Tumblr media
Second, we have frames!
Tumblr media
And lastly, the image is also divided by 2 very contrasting color temperatures. Warm and cold!
Tumblr media
This division is what I want to talk about.
We know why we are in this scene. Lady Pin is heartbroken because they don’t have much time left and they just finally confessed their feelings. So, she feels sad and in pain. She’s feeling blue… and blue is a cold color!
We have visuals of her feelings, not only for what we are seeing in the scene but also on how the cold of the room is trying to eat the warmth of the chandelier!
Tumblr media
In contrast, we have Anil trying to give as much comfort as she can. She is hopeful of the future because she knows their love is real and because she will return so much faster than last time. Anil’s warmth is trying to conquer Pin’s cold.
Tumblr media
But she is feeling sad too, although she tries to be positive about it, she doesn’t want to leave. I believe this also represents her own feelings of guilt for hurting Pin. Of course, we know it wasn’t her fault but the guilt is there too, she also feels powerless and I dare say even defeated.
That’s why the image isn’t divided in the middle, and both are on the colder side of the room.
Tumblr media
You guys have no idea of what happened in my head when this image popped up!!
Maybe there will be other scenes that will make me go wild… But so far, this imagine right here is a masterpiece.
Or maybe I’m reading too much into it!

Have you seen the hugh grant adaptation of maurice and if so what are your thoughts on it?
i have and i really enjoy it! i think the cinematography is beautiful and i appreciate most of the little changes they made to the story, particularly that of making it more clear that clive's "crisis" was due to internalized (and externalized) homophobia and not that he just woke up one day and decided he's straight now like the book implies lol. i think the movie is excellent at capturing the almost dreamlike, nostalgic quality of the book. it is generally very faithful to the book, down to repeating many lines word for word, which i really appreciate
i have mixed feelings on the casting of james wilby because in the book maurice is hyper masculine, tall dark and handsome, explicitly stated to be em forster's "middle class dream man" in that he is the english middle class ideal of a very masculine straight man, the last man anyone would ever suspect of being gay, and that clive was the one who was a bit more effeminate and boyish. i think a part of that was also a class thing (the whole book is class analysis), in the sense that maurice being middle class and occupying a more precarious position than clive meant he couldn't afford to be as 'soft' as clive was and put a lot more effort into performing heterosexuality publically while being far more comfortable with his homosexuality in private than clive ever was. but also due to class clive was more unwilling to risk his social status by fully embracing life as a gay man whereas maurice actually developed class consciousness over the course of the book and abandons his class position altogether lol. james wilby brings a different vibe to the character, and i feel that dichotomy between maurice and clive is switched around a bit and the social context of their characters as they were written for their time period (the early 1910s) is somewhat discarded, which makes me a little sad. but wilby does so well in the role, as does grant and rupert graves as alec i'm not as grumbly about it as i might be.

PHI ABL.
I watched Japan’s film His on viki rakuten, and it was SO GOOD.
Very beautiful slice of life cinematography that Japan does so well.
The story is so touching and i was instantly invested in the very real situation the characters found themselves in.
Something I really liked was that you never really got a strong sense of who was “top” and who was “bottom” and it was quite refreshing.
Have you sent it? Do you like it? I cried sad and happy tears watching this one.
His the Movie?
Not only have I seen it but Miyazawa Hio is one of my favorite Japanese Actors.
Tumblr media
The reason it doesn't come up much in this blog, is I don't really conciser it BL, more just high brow queer cinema. (Also I'm not wild about the ending.) But it certainly is quality.
You know it's a kinda sequel?
There's a prequel series of the same characters meeting as children, entirely different cast tho. Also called His (the series) or His - Koisuru Tsumori Nante Nakatta (AKA His: I Didn't Intend to Fall in Love, His: I Didn't Mean to Fall in Love, His: I Didn't Think I Would Fall in Love).
Eh, you know Japan and their titles.
Tumblr media
I like it, but it's chewy... work to get through in that quintessentially Japanese way. I think currently airing My Strawberry Film will be similar.
The same actor who plays young Nagisa in this series, Kura Yuki, is in the BL Kimi no Koto Dake Mite Itai.
Tumblr media
These are all Japanese arthouse style, which (while I appreciate) is not my personal preferred JBL lane.
Of all these, I like the movie .you're asking about best since I think this filming style tends to suit adult characters better than young adult.
Have you seen Life: Love on the Line?
It's in a similar vein. You might enjoy it too. The Director's Cut on Viki is excellent.

The Last of Us: Episode 1 World Premiere Thoughts
Ok, so I’m going to preface this by saying that I’m not going to spoil anything that happens in the games or in the first episode of this show.
This is going to be STRICTLY my response to what I think after seeing the episode + talking about the premiere event in a separate post.
First of all, the weather in LA was absolutely atrocious yesterday. Everything is flooding, it is cold and windy, and there was ZERO sun anywhere to be seen.
And despite this, the premiere was amazingly well organized, the staff and crew were super friendly and accommodating, and EVERYONE had a good time.
Show reactions first:
This show is everything I wanted from an adaptation of this game. It just WORKS in a way that I have never seen before - and never imagined possible based on a game to movie/TV adaptation. It’s something incredibly special, and HBO seems to know this. I am endlessly impressed with every single aspect of this production.
To start: the cinematography is GORGEOUS. I feel like I need to see this episode again to see it all and appreciate it thoroughly; we were 2 rows back from the front and the screen was curved, so it looked distorted at points because of the angle.
But the landscape and cityscape shots along with the slice of life shots throughout are just … perfect. And when it opens up and you see the outskirts of Boston for the first time? It felt like I was looking at the game - it was beautiful. There are scenes from this episode that are PURE CHAOS, and it’s so immersive, because it puts you right there with the characters and gives you no time to breathe.
The use of color in this - and ADEQUATE LIGHTING DURING IMPORTANT SCENES - cannot be overstated. The parts that were dark weren’t too dark to make out what was happening, and the light sources and additions felt like they belonged exactly where they were used, and were very very carefully considered - especially in the sections of the show where there was an ABUNDANCE OF LIGHT.
The music … wow. I was expecting some new takes on the original soundtrack, but what we got was so much more. It’s the original TLOU soundtrack but turned up to 11. The theme of music tying into the storyline was well done, and the places it was used it was used to add a different dimension to the scene, not to distract from what the scene was lacking otherwise. They DID use an actual song in the show at one point - and it worked very well where it was placed, and tied in with an earlier scene / conversation seamlessly.
Bella Ramsey’s Ellie is something else. Their delivery of specific familiar lines was fantastic, and there were times when I was like “Ashley? Is that you?” And the addition of new, fun dialogue only adds to the way this Ellie is being brought to life - but she’s very much still similar to Game Ellie in a lot of ways. The dialogue is one thing, but Bella’s facial expressions are spot on. They’re very expressive, especially when Ellie’s staying silent. But the best part? Bella holds her own next to Merle and Anna and Pedro. And this is only episode 1 - I cannot wait to see certain things from the second half of the game.
There is one scene with Marlene where Ellie’s facial response and the look in her eyes says more than any words could EVER say, and I was stunned and pleased and it just really WORKED.
Pedro’s Joel is NOT Troy’s Joel - and he doesn’t try to be. I don’t know what I was expecting from this portrayal, but what I saw onscreen exceeded my expectations. We saw him as a happy father. We see him scared and sad. We see him angry and struggling and MAD. We see him as ruthless and focused and lost in thought and worried … and this was in the first 85 minutes. The things this man can do with his facial expressions and body language (I will spoil something and let all of you know that we got THE STANCE multiple times in this episode) are unmatched. There is one specific scene that really highlights how different (or indifferent he tries to be) from his former self, and it’s haunting to see it all play out.
The accent is fluid; it’s not heavy or too light - but it changes based on his emotions, and that is DAMN impressive considering how talented Troy is and how great that version of Joel is. It reminds me a lot of a more subtle Ezra. (Side note, Cynthia Summers deserves a raise for putting Pedro into the outfits he wears in episode 1 - there’s a Marcus Moreno with Missy / Javier P in the green t shirt shirt similarity that I was literally drooling over, and the tight blue denim button up and neckerchief? YES. YES PLEASE.) (Also Coco with some phenomenal hairstyle decisions already and we’ve still got 8 more episodes to go)
Gabriel Luna is a really solid choice for Tommy. You truly get that ‘brothers’ bond, and see how they stand up for each other. There is definitely added content with him in this episode and I’m glad.
I love Anna Torv, but this interpretation of Tess is very different than in the game - and if you didn’t like her then, you won’t like her now.
I have a theory about why she is the way she is in the show and why Joel is the way he is with her that I am more than happy to go into detail about after everyone’s seen the first episode - so I’m curious to know if anyone agrees. But the Tess/Joel relationship itself isn’t too much different than it was in the game, even though their status is a lot less subtle. There’s one moment in the episode where I covered my mouth and went “!!!!!!!!!” Because it was exactly what I wanted between them and I enjoyed seeing it.
It didn't feel like 85 minutes, but at the same time, I was shocked at the amount of ground they covered in this episode. I can sort of SEE where they would have cut it off if it were still two episodes, but it didn’t feel disjointed at all - it felt like it was meant to be one episode and one episode only.
There were changes and additions. Without going into detail - we get more time with the Millers. We see more of pre-outbreak Austin. We see more of what the Boston QZ is like than we did in the game and it reconfirms that I would not ever want to live in a QZ. We learn more about Joel and Tommy together and separately. We see more infected up close. We get more of Joel to see how much he’s changed in 20 years. The introduction between Ellie and Joel here is something I like more than I liked the game’s version. Marlene’s place in all of this is expanded a little - and it WORKS. Nico Parker is a goddamn powerhouse, and I love her.
The infected are terrifying, and you sort of get a play by play of how the infection progresses without it being shoved in your face - very, very interesting way to show it.
They did make a few changes - aside from the year - and for the most part, I’m alright with them. Spores vs tendrils is a huge change, but I’m willing to see where it goes. (The tendrils are in this episode and seeing them made me recoil from the screen in disgust.) I loved seeing MORE from before the outbreak and going deeper into different character histories and seeing daily life and focusing on things that weren’t’ possible in the game. It makes things feel so much more well-rounded.
One of the biggest changes in this episode (and the show moving forward) makes some of the things we’ve seen in the trailers make a ton more sense - and I love it. It’s a really smart way to add some urgency and direction to what Joel’s doing aside from the Ellie companionship.
My biggest issue with the episode was a short scene between Joel and another character - and then a follow up one with just Joel. It’s more of a “why is this a necessary inclusion” than anything else, but it definitely gave me pause when I saw it happening. Pedro played it PERFECTLY, and it’s a very appropriate scene in terms of show inclusion and foreshadowing, but it came out of nowhere because I never would have thought of Joel being involved in what the scene entailed. I need to see it again before I make my final assessment though.
I could talk about this for hours but this is already super long, so if you’ve gotten to this point - thank you for reading. I can’t wait until Sunday to find out what all of you think. I can’t wait for you to fall in love with these characters and watch their story unfold.
My final rating? So far it’s way up there - probably an 8.5 out of 10, that depending on what happens when I’m not watching with my neck craned up for 2 hours - will probably go up to at least a 9.5.
The audience clapped and cheered multiple times. The reactions to certain scenes were exactly what I hoped them to be. They definitely cared about the source material when they made this show - if the rest of the season plays out like this, it’s absolutely a love letter to TLOU and the world we’ve all loved since 2013. The whole team involved in this should be very proud of what they have created because they did an incredible job.
Edited to add:
They showed a 90 second “in the coming weeks” video after the credits and it showed a scene from every remaining episode and they all look fucking INCREDIBLE. This show is going to step on the gas and not let up, and I’m not emotionally ready at ALL.
If you have anything else you’d like to ask, please feel free and if I can answer without spoilers, I will!
Also, if anyone is going to the NYC screenings on Thursday, I’ll be in FEDRA A at 1:45. (And potentially another one later if I get selected because my requests are still in the queue.)
Here’s a couple pictures of the venue and the promo stuff we were given as we left:
