A little over a decade ago, researchers in Australia were placing recorders in the nests of superb fairywrens (Malurus cyaneus) when they discovered something entirely unexpected. The female songbirds were singing to their unhatched eggs. Even more astonishing, when the chicks finally hatched, experts noticed that all the birds that grew up in the same nest used a similar tune to beg their mother and father for food.

this is by no means comprehensive, as this app has a skewed demographic to begin with, but I'm just trying to decide on whether this is a worthwhile topic for the women and gender studies project I'm doing.

I was inspired by @jezifster's recent question about non-gendered royal titles, and I put together this graphic to serve as a jumping off point for people writing monarchies in SFF !
Obviously this non-exhaustive list contains mainly western titles, all in English. Feel free add any on additional gender neutral terminologies that you can think of, including those from different languages and cultures!
A small addition: I'm not a linguist or historian and put this list together based on some quick googling! While you're free to flex the usage and meanings of these words however you choose, researching the real-world context of each term before using them in your own writing is a best practice.

Gender is not fluid. You can’t change it. You are what you were born as. Female or male. Female being xx chromosomes and majority hormone of estrogen with a uterus and accompanied reproductive organs. Males being xy chromosomes and majority hormone of testosterone and testicles with accompanying reproductive organs. Surgery doesn’t change it. Men cannot have babies. Women do not produce sperm. It’s literally a biological fact
Gender roles are fluid and bullshit and THAT is what anyone trans is feeling. Is the fight against gender roles. Not gender…and you will never convince me otherwise.
*intersex people are a mutation or birth defect and are not the norm standard for human development. And in those cases they still typically have characteristics to one gender or the other.*

"The myth that female reproductive capabilities somehow render them incapable of gathering any food products beyond those that cannot run away does more than just underestimate Paleolithic women. It feeds into narratives that the contemporary social roles of women and men are inherent and define our evolution. Our Paleolithic ancestors lived in a world where everyone in the band pulled their own weight, performing multiple tasks. It was not a utopia, but it was not a patriarchy."

By "vagina owner" and "uterus haver", by "*pregnant person not pregnant woman", by "sex work is work", and by retaining the mentality that what is social is superior to and transcends what is biological, you are reducing biology and especially female biology down to a material, exploitable natural resource.

Researchers have found that aunts play a crucial role in supporting the well-being of their LGBTQ youth relatives, including preventing them from experiencing homelessness. These findings are published in Socius, an open access journal. The research paper, coauthored by Brandon Andrew Robinson, associate professor and chair of the University of California, Riverside's Gender and Sexuality Studies Department, is based on a longitudinal study of 83 LGBTQ youth from the Inland Empire and South Texas, two geographic areas identified as understudied places in LGBTQ research.

A new landmark study has found that access to gender-affirming healthcare significantly reduces rates of depression, gender dysphoria, and suicidality among transgender people.
While it’s no secret that providing gender-affirming care to transgender individuals who ask for it can greatly benefit their well-being, an increase in transphobic rhetoric and bans on gender-affirming healthcare has prompted thorough medical studies into the impact of such care.
Now, brand new research conducted in Melbourne, Australia, has found that allowing transgender people to access the care they’re after can reduce suicidality by a stunning 55%.
As part of the first-ever randomized controlled trial (RCT) on gender-affirming care, researchers took 64 transgender and gender-diverse adults who had been looking to start testosterone therapy and randomly split them into a treatment group and a control group.
While the treatment group was allowed to begin hormone therapy that week, the control group waited three months for their treatment to begin.
Before the study began, both groups were evaluated on depression, gender dysphoria, and suicidality. Three months later, the two groups were evaluated again.
RCTs for medical care can often be hard to conduct due to practical and ethical concerns. However, researchers of this study found a way to hold an RCT for this study by incorporating a shorter follow-up period. Rather than giving the control group a placebo drug, or no treatment at all, they were simply given a longer wait time.
The results showed a notable decrease in gender dysphoria, depression, and – most significantly – suicidality.
The group that received gender-affirming care right away saw a 55% reduction in suicidality compared to a 5% drop within the control group.
Depression scores in the treatment group decreased by half, while gender dysphoria rates also significantly decreased.
Breaking down their findings, researchers Brendan J. Nolan MBBS, Sav Zwickl, PhD, and Peter Locke wrote: “There was a statistically significant decrease in gender dysphoria in individuals with immediate [access to gender-affirming care] compared with delayed initiation of testosterone therapy.”
“A clinically significant decrease in depression and a decrease in suicidality also occurred with immediate testosterone therapy.”
“The findings of this trial suggest that testosterone therapy significantly decreases gender dysphoria, depression, and suicidality in transgender and gender-diverse individuals desiring testosterone therapy.”
Tumblr media
Of course, this isn’t the first time that research has shown significant drops in depression and suicide rates among transgender individuals who receive gender-affirming care.
A 2022 medical study showed that young transgender people who have access to puberty blockers are 73% less at risk of suicide and report improved well-being.
But, as anti-trans activists advocate for further bans on gender-affirming care, one of the key arguments is that the evidence in support of the care isn’t up to scratch with GRADE (Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) standards.
So research like this landmark RCT is so significant to the transgender community and its allies as the fight for their healthcare rights rumbles on.

The Cass Report is a masterpiece in double standards. The reality is that plenty of widespread medical interventions are supported by equal or worse quality evidence, but they only attack trans care for it.
Here’s an example:
If we followed their evidentiary requirement, we would have to abandon much of surgical care, much of paediatrics, and virtually all of neonatal intensive care.

Estrogen is Made from Testosterone and other T&E facts that will Confuse Bigots
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We been told this over and over again. Testosterone (T) is the male drug that makes men “real men”, and estrogen (E) is the female drug that makes women sweet and dainty.
This is a story that makes the hypermasculine narrative about traditional gender roles seem “sciency”. The fact is, however, that this is not how the hormones work.
Did you know that E is made from T?
Gemma Stones writes over at twitter:
If you block your testosterone receptors then your T says "fuck this I'm transitioning" and becomes oestrogen. Your actual hormones themselves can change sex. This is a biology fact.
"Can people change sex" seems like a really fucking dim question in the face of facts like this huh.
This is also why gym bros who take T sometimes get lil titties. your T receptors can only handle so much and the rest of it has to go somewhere! so it becomes oestrogen!
More hormone facts I've been told today: Pretty much all of the E in everyone's body was once an androgen like Testosterone. This happens more in bodies with ovaries because they have more of the enzyme that does it. All oestrogen is transgender.
Tumblr media
And here's a fun graph showing that across a cis woman's life time she has significantly more testosterone than oestrogen. again, smashing the binary thinking we have of these lil chemical boyos.
Tumblr media
[This graph is from a tweet by the urologist Ashley Winter MD, who writes:
“So your whole life, you should have been shown a better graph. Like this one. With Y-axis labelling. Which shows that (in average over the lifespan), WOMEN HAVE MORE TESTOSTERONE THAT ESTRADIOL. Thats right. Every goddamn human has more testosterone than estradiol.”]
