Fortnight of Books, Day 12

Book you still aren’t sure of your feelings on:

I feel kind of ambivalent about Seer of Shadows by Avi. It's about an apprentice photographer who discovers that he's taking pictures of the ghost of a little girl who died under mysterious circumstances. On the one hand, it was a creepy setup in an interesting period of history, but on the other hand, the book overall was just kind of...meh? Unfortunately, that's the way Avi is sometimes. Some of his books are incredible, some are just sort of mediocre. This one sort of felt like it should have been a longer book, or maybe for an older audience so it could really lean into the creepiness of the situation.

Series you gave up on in 2023:

I guess that would have to be the Maze Runner series. I finally finished The Death Cure this year, but though I know James Dashner wrote a couple prequels, I have no intention of reading them. My introduction to the series was through the movies. When I saw The Maze Runner, I was obsessed. I was dying to know every little thought that ran through the characters' heads, and every infinitesimal shift of emotion.

Then I started reading the books, and realized that, writing-wise, they're just middling YA books. Nothing too spectacular to read, not much more involved than just watching it on the big screen. But I was intrigued by the differences between book and movie, especially as I continued on to The Scorch Trials, which was basically a completely different story from the movie @_@ That continued on with The Death Cure, but it led to the additional problem that the story the books were telling were much less interesting and much harder to follow and believe in than the movies. By the time I finally slogged to the end of The Death Cure, I decided that, for once, the movies are much better than the books, and I'm glad they deviated so much from the source material.

Now the only question is whether to keep the books I bought in a spree of excitement after watching the first movie, or if I should sell them....
