Rose genetics and the law of unintended consequences (or, ten rose bushes, reviewed)
I have a number of longposts in the backlog, including updates on a number of garden improvement projects I undertook over the winter, but I kept putting off posting them because there kept being Horrors. However, spring is here - in California anyway - and plants wait for no one.
Over the winter of 2025, as a coping mechanism for the aforementioned Horrors, I got really into roses. Because of who I am as a person, deciding what roses I wanted to buy also made me feel obliged to reconstruct the history of rose breeding, just to make sense of the teeming confusion of the tens of thousands of named rose varieties. Humans have been raising roses for food, medicine, and beauty for untold centuries, and so they've really grown up with us. The history of the development of roses, it turns out, is the history of the development of humanity in miniature.
This post has it all: history, some light phylogeny discussion, material analysis of English folk ballads, a conceptual framework for understanding how different kinds of roses vary and why, a #haul breakdown of what bare-root roses I got and what I thought of them, and some philosophical musings on what it means for an organism to be subjected to a long-term selective breeding process, to be remade wholly in the image of human desire. All that, and pictures of roses, under the cut.
My general region of California is considered to have a good climate for roses, much good may it do us. It never gets too hot or too cold, so they essentially never go out of season, and even though our winters are wet, the rest of the year is fairly dry. This is absolutely critical, because the main problem that makes garden roses hard to grow is fungal disease. Modern roses are incredibly susceptible to fungal diseases, which are caused, roughly, by Damp. This has typically been combated with toxic sprays (though there are now less-toxic options) and aggressive pruning regimens.
Needless to say, this is a ridiculous fucking problem for a plant to have. California natives, by comparison, hate irrigation - they have a natural life cycle involving being dry in summer and wet in winter, like California itself, so if you grow them in a climate resembling their natural range, without too much added water, they will be mostly OK. Roses, as far as I can tell, actually hate all water, including rain and humidity, which is much worse because gardeners do not control the weather. If it rains too often after, say, noon, the rose's leaves might get wet, fail to dry off, get a fungal disease, and die. If there is too much fog, or it is humid, as it is in most of the country in the summer, the rose's leaves might get wet &c. If you have a sprinkler system - you get the idea.
Fungal disease can also weaken roses and make them more prone to insect infestations. This is bad because modern garden roses are, without any help from The Weather, already incredibly prone to infestations from aphids, mites, beetles, and a mite-borne disease undescriptively called "rose rosette disease", which produces a habitus that I can only describe as "rose bush eldritch horror".
Now, this may all have you asking one question. Probably, that question is "why are you so obsessed with a plant that wants so badly to die?" I will not be answering this question today. Instead, I will be answering a different question, which is "Why do modern garden roses suck so bad?"
Now, if roses are subject to some manner of curse, then it isn't a family curse, phylogenically speaking. Roses - genus Rosa species extremely miscellaneous - are a member of the family Rosaceae, which contains a massive number of useful and delightful plants. It is possibly the most economically important family of plants next to the brassicas. The rose family brings us not just roses, but apples, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, plums, peaches, apricots, and almonds. And the wild rose, untouched by human efforts, is a lot like a raspberry, actually.
Its flowers have only five petals, in pink or white. It’s got thorny stems that form thickets, and oval (or, technically, lanceolate) leaves with lightly serrated edges. Its flowers are fragrant, which is an adaptation to their long and necessary coexistence with pollinators and other insects - fragrance serves as a chemical signal for insects to "come here" or "go away", depending. The wild rose is hardy, like all wild plants, tolerant of various environmental problems that would kill a garden rose: shade, salt, normal levels of ambient insect and fungal disease pressure, drought, being consistently rained on in the afternoon or evening. It may reproduce asexually from suckers - strong shoots from near the base of the plant - and this makes it able to withstand browsing pressure from e.g. deer. (Put a pin in that.) It also can reproduce in the normal way, by having its flowers pollinated and forming seeds, which are borne in prominent reddish-orange fruits called "hips".
This is not a rose I bought, but here’s Rosa gymnocarpa, a California native rose. It’s a wood rose, so it’s shade-tolerant, and it’s often found in redwood forests specifically, so it tolerates relatively dry soil and very acidic soil.
Honorable mention: Rosa gymnocarpa (wood rose)

A raspberry plant in flower, for comparison. Source
The wild rose has another trait, which may be surprising to those who have only ever seen garden roses: it blooms once, usually in the summer. This is typical of flowers, which almost always have a season, for the exact same reason fresh fruit has a season. Flowering plants are on a tight schedule: they need to finish up their blooming, so they can set fruit, so they can get their seeds out before winter, in case the frost kills them off. And mostly we’re used to that: tulips are for spring, so you don't expect a tulip to make a second showing in fall, or to flower continuously throughout the summer. But roses have been bred to do this, and have done it for centuries, for so long we barely remember what it was like when "roses blooming" was a time of year, an event.
It's possible that for most of human history, roses were all the more treasured for being fleeting, which simply isn't an aspect of how we moderns understand roses. I am constantly subjected to traditional ballads at home, both in English and German, so I am very aware that multiple Child ballads mention roses as a way of placing the events of the ballad at a particular time of year. In 'Lady Isobel and the Elf-Knight', a song traditionally associated with May Day, one version of the chorus references the events as occurring 'as the rose is blown'. And at the start of 'Tam Lin', the protagonist meets her fairy lover while plucking a double rose, is "laid down among... the roses red" by him, and finishes the ballad on Halloween night heavily pregnant with his child. The course of the ballad is inextricably intertwined with the course of the seasons, and the bloom of roses is synonymous with early summer. (There's so much symbolism in 'Tam Lin', but especially around roses. Can I interest you in tam-lin.org at this time?)
European religious literature even uses "a rose e'er blooming" as a purely figurative phrase, something impossible and magical enough to be a metonym for the Virgin Mary - but in the modern era, most garden roses are ever-blooming. The perpetual-blooming rose is not the natural state of the rose plant, but a kind of technology that had to be developed. And I don't know, I just think that's neat.
So what have we learned? The wild rose is: once-blooming, tough, possibly shade-tolerant depending on species, very thorny, bearing simple pink or white five-petaled flowers, that are fragrant, pollinator-friendly, and produce fruit readily enough. In short, a practical, normal sort of plant.
The garden rose is…not that. There’s no other way to put this: the modern garden rose is the wild rose, but bimboified.
Now, in case today is your first day on the Internet - well, first of all, welcome, it’s bad here - but secondly, bimboification is a niche fetish where someone is transformed into a hypersexualized version of themselves that is also very stupid. Plant domestication is obviously analogous. I didn’t originate this joke; in fact, I reblogged a joke like this just last week.
Roses are like this but even more so. Like, wheat is clearly bimboified. Its sexual parts (seeds) have been remade, swollen to ludicrous proportions, and wheat is probably worse at being a plant than wild grasses. But we created modern wheat from wild grass because it was more useful that way, and wheat could in theory survive and spread without human cultivation. Roses are Like That purely because we wanted to make them a more perfect decorative object. Centuries of intensive selection pressure for appearance have rendered roses useless as an independent plant: they are so disease-prone they need extensive intervention to even survive, and they are often physically incapable of propagating themselves - one of the basic features of plants! - without human aid. That’s plant bimboification.

Source: Heirloom Roses. This one is called 'Oranges 'n' Lemons. Hardly seems like the same plant!
Here are just a few examples, of what we've done to roses. Humans love rose petals - eating them, distilling them into perfume, smelling them, just looking at them - so the garden rose has massive flowers that are so stuffed with petals that pollinators cannot get at their centers, rendering the rose incapable of reproducing except possibly with the help of a human equipped with a paintbrush. Humans love bright colors, so modern roses come in every color their natural pigments allow. Garden roses are often - though not always - less thorny than their wild cousins, because thorns are inconvenient to humans, and so have been somewhat bred out.
And what’s just as important is what was bred out of wild roses in the process of becoming modern roses - by accident. As mentioned above, modern roses are often useless to pollinators, and, not unrelatedly, can’t reproduce without human help. They often lose their fragrance, if not specifically bred for it. They are very susceptible to disease, because gardeners can keep alive, through sheer stubbornness, plants that natural selection would have culled. Likewise, they need full sun where many wild roses can get by even in the shade of big evergreens, and they can't tolerate nearly as much cold, heat, or salt exposure as their wild relatives.
This 'use it or lose it' thing, by the way, is a general principle of selective processes like plant breeding, or like evolution. If you have two independent traits, A and B, and you select hard for A, then B is likely to gradually drop out of the population, simply because the subset of A carriers that also have B is likely to be small. It's pure statistics. (It essentially is a human-created population bottleneck.) The more intense and ruthless the selection pressure, the stronger the effect. Evolution cares a lot about seed production and hardly at all about color, so wild roses are plain but make enormous rose hips; humans like beautiful roses the color of sunsets, and are indifferent to seed production, so modern roses don’t make hips at all. The failure to select for eventually becomes an implicit selection pressure against.
(Highly-bred organisms are thus less, I guess, well-rounded genetically even before you get to issues of inbreeding, and if you assume there is no biological link between your selected-for traits and other ridealong traits, e.g. domestication syndrome. Genetics is complicated!)
One adapted wild-type trait that - I speculate - was not bred out, due to its direct usefulness to humans, was the ability of roses to grow back vigorously from having leaves or branches removed. This is, it seems to me, an adaptation to herbivore browsing - if you are a rose with minimal regrowth ability, and a deer chews on half your canes, it’s curtains for you. But humans also fully remove half of the canes of their garden roses every winter - it’s critical to controlling the fungal disease that so plagues them. Specifically, pruning improves airflow through the plant, which evaporates the water that keeps falling on the leaves from the sky. (You know. The rain, that roses both hate and need to live.) In some sense, we are acting as caretakers here, shaping the plant in inscrutable ways for its own good. But to the plant, we are basically deer: just another in a long line of animals that want to steal its leaves. Unbelievable! It needs those! Fuck you too, buddy: here’s a faceful of thorns.
Truly, a tale as old as time.
This brings me to my first actual rose review, a kind of bridge between wild roses and the world of cultivated roses.
#1: Rosa rugosa, probably "Hansa"

Source: the author's yard.
This is a sucker - a vigorous young ground-level shoot - from an unnamed rosebush from my mother's house. I say "probably 'Hansa'" because we have no idea what this actually is, only that it is a rugosa hybrid, purchased from an unknown nursery in the Midwest sometime during the Bush administration.
'Hybrid rugosas' are crosses between garden-type roses and a wild rose species called Rosa rugosa, which is native to much of Asia. This particular rose bush has many traits carried over from its wild parent: it's violently fragrant, a glorious sweet-spicy combo that smells to me like childhood and home; it has wrinkly leaves (characteristic of Rosa rugosa in particular); its stems are practically coated in prickles; and it's quite tolerant of shade, drought, and salt (Rosa rugosa is a beach rose).
The main virtue evinced by this rose, derived from its wild parent, is the same reason that it is still here in my garden: it is extremely difficult to kill. My mother, after hearing me say I wanted this specific rose bush at my house the same way it had been at my childhood home, dug up a sucker from her instance, put it in a bag with some wet dirt, carried it by hand on a multi-hour cross-country plane flight, and handed it off to me. Once I received it, I stuck it in a pot, because I was ripping up my lawn and had nowhere to plant it, and mostly forgot about it, because I was busy ripping up my entire lawn. It lost its leaves suspiciously early in the fall. ("That's not good," my mother said, over FaceTime, brow furrowed. "Are the rest of your roses doing that?")
But as the saying doesn't go, "where there's green cambium, there's hope", and I continued to take care of it throughout the winter. I eventually even remembered to put it in the ground. It is now March, and in defiance of the mockery of certain judgemental housemates, who said things like "why do you have a stick in a pot?" and "it's giving 'dead', my guy", this "stick" has now decided to become a rosebush, and has a grand total of (approximately) twenty-five leaves.
Like I said: extremely difficult to kill. It is currently planted 10-ish feet from the base of a redwood tree, a tough environment where some hardy garden-style roses have nonetheless been known to thrive. Given that its resurrection has occurred entirely while it was planted under the redwood, it doesn't seem too mad about its environment.
Review: holy shit, it’s alive???
#2: Zéphirine Drouhin, the "old garden rose"

Source: Heirloom Roses
Rosarians have conceived of many groupings of garden roses, based on known ancestry, phenotype, genetic studies, and Vibes, but one major breakpoint is those bred before 1867, the "old garden roses", and after 1867, the "modern garden roses".
The old garden roses were derived mostly from ancient European and Middle Eastern stock, which had themselves been created from wild roses centuries prior. For example, this is Rosa x alba, an ancient European rose strain; it was used as the heraldic badge of the medieval House of York during the English conflict known as the War of the Roses.

Source: not mine
Some of these roses are perpetual-blooming, a trait introduced as late as the eighteenth century, and which is entirely due to trade contact with China: as far as I can tell, the genes for strong reblooming only come from the Chinese rose-breeding tradition, which was itself centuries old by that point. So the modern Western concept of perpetual-blooming roses as the default kind of rose - like so many other aspects of modernity - is a direct result of Europeans cribbing from everybody else.
Interestingly, France was a major center for rose development during the early modern period. You can see it in the way old garden roses are named: overwhelmingly after some eminent madame or monsieur. This is probably connected to the fact that Josephine, Napoleon Bonaparte’s empress, was a rose fiend: she had two hundred and fifty new varieties of rose to be brought to her gardens at Château de Malmaison, which was probably pretty much all the named varieties of rose that existed then, and many of which were new to European cultivation at that time. Again, this represented a massive inflow of rose genes that were previously restricted to other countries or continents entirely. Inextricably, these gardens also represent the proceeds of early modern global trade, and of empire: Napoleon, on campaign abroad, himself sent her hundreds of specimens of flowering plants, and the French navy confiscated plants and seeds from ships captured and sea and sent them to her.
Anyway, Zéphirine Drouhin, created at the end of the "old garden rose" period and named for some now-forgotten madame or mademoiselle, is highly fragrant - one of the few roses said to really perfume the air - with a vibrant but old-fashioned color palette. (Apricot and yellow roses were also characteristic of the Chinese rose gene pool, and so were significantly less common in old garden roses.) Zéphirine Drouhin is also thornless, a rare trait that we nonetheless see in some old-fashioned garden roses, and a few modern garden roses as well.
Old garden roses have a variable but generally good level of disease resistance. Zéphirine Drouhin in particular, gets something of a bad rap for poor disease resistance; English rose breeder David Austin Roses says, tactfully, that it "prefers warmer climates" (versus, one must assume, rainy England) and that "controlling disease can be a problem". By this you should understand them to mean that it is a whiny little pissbaby that constantly gets blackspot, a diva that will defoliate at the drop of a hat (or the drop of, uh, water).
However, unlike certain other newer roses I will mention later, I have found Zéphirine Drouhin to be pretty healthy so far. I received this rose, like many in this post, "bare root", basically a stick, dormant in a bag of wood shavings. Upon being planted in a part-sun area, it has leafed out with only a scattering of aphids to show in terms of disease.
Review: So far, so good. Looking forward to the fragrance.
#3 and 4: 'Mister Lincoln' and 'Fragrant Cloud', the hybrid tea brothers
Remember how I mentioned that 1868 is the breakpoint between "old garden roses" and "modern garden roses"? That year marked the invention of a new type of rose, the 'hybrid tea', that is in some sense THE rose, the ARCHETYPE of a rose. If you ask someone who knows nothing about roses to draw 'a rose' - if you look up clipart of a rose - a hybrid tea rose is what you'll get.

Source: Star Nursery
This is Mister Lincoln, and although it was developed as late as the 1960s, it has the classic hybrid tea rose form. Hybrid teas have a very distinctive shape, described as "high-pointed", with a spiral of unfurling petals that curl at the edges, and they're borne singly on long stems, making them great for cutting and putting into vases and bouquets. They are not always strongly fragrant, and they are not generally very disease-resistant. They come in a very wide variety of colors, intense and subtle. They are reblooming.
Hybrid teas were developed by another East-meets-West cross, when the Chinese tea roses, freshly imported from Guangzhou in the early 19th century, were bred with the old garden roses. Tea roses have the same iconic form as the hybrid teas; they have those unique, pastel shades that were previously quite absent from European rose stocks; they smell like a fresh cup of tea. All these traits they impart to hybrid teas. Hybrid teas have been very popular ever since, and have been subject to a great deal of selective breeding for color and form.
Hybrid teas don't generally spark joy, to me. I find the 'cartoon rose' shape kind of twee, honestly. And the reputation for lack of disease tolerance puts me off. But I heard Mister Lincoln was incredibly fragrant, and that drew me in. Likewise Fragrant Cloud (1967), which also has the charming feature of being a violent neon coral that is allegedly very difficult to photograph.

Source: Heirloom Roses
“It'll be fine," I thought. "How much fungal disease can it get? It's not like it's humid here."
Never again. My trust is destroyed; fuck hybrid teas.

please, my son, he is very sick
This is my poor Mister Lincoln, planted from bare-root in mid-December. It has three different fungal diseases, and also an aphid infestation I can't seem to get it to shake. It looks like one of those diagrams of a liver in a medical textbook that has fatty liver and cirrhosis and liver cancer all at once, just so you can see what all the diseases look like. This is a rose that has every problem! No other rose in this flower bed comes close to having every problem! 'Munstead Wood' is also a modern garden rose (though from a very different lineage - see my review below) and it has no fungal diseases and not a single aphid!
Well, maybe the other hybrid tea I bought is doing better... well, nope, it rained last week and Fragrant Cloud has powdery mildew.
Review: Come on, man.
#5 Unidentified ‘sunset’ rose
I didn’t buy these roses; they came with my house. As a consequence, I have no idea what they are, but I am now intimately familiar with their traits, and I think they are very indicative of both the high and low points of modern garden roses.
On the surface level, the fact that these rose bushes are still with us is an impressive proof of their persistence under adversity. When I bought the house, these roses were being choked to death. Lily-of-the-nile had been planted way too close to them, and then permitted to grow unchecked and undivided for many years; their roots were completely infiltrated and surrounded with lily roots. The lily roots had also damaged the irrigation lines, which were dribbling uncontrolled amounts of water into the shared root zone. So when I excavated these roses, the whole area smelled strongly of rot, with visible mold throughout; the roots were fully wet even in the heat of August. The roses were also infested with blackspot, not surprisingly. I wasn’t sure if what I was doing was too little, too late.
But when they finally got some drainage, some direct sunlight, and some relief from the brutal root competition, they did start growing back, and even blooming. Come winter, I pruned hard, defoliated, and applied neem oil consistently. And they’ve made a comeback!

Source: these blooms are actually my roses.
They bloom, and they’re beautiful. They do this ombre thing, where the buds are bright yellow and as they open they go from yellow, to orange, and finally to red.
The growth is fairly vigorous, with no powdery mildew no matter how rainy it gets. But their foliage definitely suffers from blackspot, and occasional rose rust; the spores are probably ambiently present in the soil now, and they can’t quite seem to defend themselves, even with ample help from organic fungicides like neem oil.
They also have no fragrance. They smell like nothing. And that’s the standard modern garden rose in a nutshell, I think: beautiful color and form, shaky disease resistance, little fragrance. It’s a little sad, honestly.
Review: Okay, this one is really pretty, actually.
Interlude: Pesticides and the law of unintended consequences
So, yeah, you can sort of see how roses got a reputation for being picky divas. I can only imagine how bad this sort of thing must get in places that get (gasp!) rain or humidity in the summer.
Now, having created plants that are too disease-ridden to live, rose-lovers came up with practical and effective solutions to the disease problem they created. For the past century or so, the go-to fix for our increasingly disease-prone rose population has been chemicals: regular applications of synthetic insecticide and fungicide sprays, as well as plenty of fertilizer and herbicide to feed the roses and kill any competing weeds.
However, recall the theme of this post: the law of unintended consequences. In agriculture, the development of modern pesticides and fertilizers has been genuinely miraculous; the Green Revolution is estimated to have saved a billion people from starvation in the latter half of the twentieth century. Saving a billion people! Can you even begin to conceive of what it would be like to save a billion people, even grapple with the moral weight of that act? I know I can't; the number is simply too large for our moral intuitions to handle, I think. So I'm hesitant to bad-mouth pesticides and fertilizers too much.
But they do have massive downsides. Chemical fertilizers leach into the groundwater and cause algal blooms that make entire bodies of water go anoxic, rendering them uninhabitable to fish and the rest of the aquatic food chain. Insecticides are probably responsible for colony collapse, which endangers the pollinators that we rely on for our food supply.
And, well, even if you don't give a shit about the natural world - you are a part of the natural world. You are an animal, with all the frailty that implies. Our bodies use many of the same ancient metabolic pathways as insects and plants; the majority of your DNA is shared with a banana. And because you are an animal, it is very difficult indeed to create an insecticide that will poison other animals without poisoning you too, at least a little. Herbicides are somehow still worse, despite the more distant biological relationship between humans and dandelions: Roundup, for instance, is linked to non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, which has led to Monsanto paying out massive legal settlements to cancer patients who used their products.
So if we can't grow roses without coating them in poison, maybe we should just… not do that? Go back to growing super-hardy nearly-wild roses like rugosas, forgoing forever the elegance and sublime color of a modern rose?

Give up this? ‘Glowing Peace’, Heirloom Roses
Not so fast! Maybe this technological problem has a technological solution. If we bred roses so that they sucked, maybe we should just not do that! Make different roses! Make roses that don't suck!
#6-#8, ‘Ebb Tide', 'Eden', and 'Lavender Crush': roses that don't suck
Over the last fifty years, people have become increasingly aware of the impacts of modern lifestyles upon our health and the health of the planet and its ecosystems. So maybe this has made the public less willing to buy roses that need to be treated constantly with toxic sprays. Or maybe it's just that growing disease-prone roses is an enormous pain in the ass. Spray, prune, spray, defoliate, fertilize, spray, fertilize, spray, water - but not too much! Oops, powdery mildew. Defoliate and spray some more.
So the genetic health of the newer varieties of garden roses is greatly improved. The two hybrid teas I struggled with above were bred in the 1960s. All the named rose varieties in this section were bred since the 1990s or later: Eden in 1997, Ebb Tide in 2004, and Lavender Crush, the baby of the group, was introduced in 2016. All of them are vibrantly healthy and quite vigorous; Ebb Tide and Eden are shade-tolerant too, and Lavender Crush is allegedly very winter-hardy. After a scant two months in the ground, they've started to put out flower buds. And they keep some of the glorious color and form of older roses. Look at them!

I don't mean to say all 20th century roses are bad and disease-ridden. I also have purchased 'New Dawn' (introduced 1930), due to it being the fifteen-dollarest rose at the Home Depot. (My toxic trait is that I am an absolute sucker for a good deal. I don't go into TJ Maxx anymore; it's too dangerous.) 'New Dawn' has all the ancestral, throwback traits I laud here: shade-tolerance, fragrance, disease resistance. It even brings in the pollinators! But it seems to me there's been a noticeable uptick in the quality of newer rose introductions, particularly when it comes to disease resistance. I'm not wired into the professional rose world to know what that is; I'm Literally Just Some Guy. But it's a good trend.
Review: I am so excited for the buds to open, you have no idea.
#9: 'Double Knockout': the 'landscape' rose
Wait, no, I take that back. These roses have too much ease of care. Put some back.
The Knockout rose has one virtue: you cannot kill it with an axe. Literally.

This rose was planted right at the foot of a redwood tree in my garden, because the previous owner of my house was an idiot. This is a terrifically bad setup for roses and redwoods: redwoods acidify the soil, and suck up water and nutrients aggressively, leaving little for surrounding plants, and of course they provide dense shade. Roses hate the acid, the dry and low-nutrient soil, and the shade; this plant never bloomed all last summer. For their part, the redwoods hate having anything planted in their inner root zone - their roots are relatively shallow for such a large tree. This is not a good situation for anyone, so I hacked this rose back to the ground, dug out as much of the root ball as I dared, and in my naivete thought that would be the end of it. Well, it has grown back. Now I am faced with the dilemma of whether to risk root injury to my redwood tree, or just let the rose be, bloomless as it is. Probably the latter is better for the redwood tree, on the whole. Maybe it’ll get choked out if I don’t water it? Anyone’s guess, really.
The category of landscape roses is a 2000s invention. The first Knockout rose was introduced in 2000 after years of intensive selective breeding for being easy-care, free-flowering, and disease-resistant; the similar Drift line was the product of an amateur rose breeder in 2006 to much the same ends. Landscape roses are so named because instead of being demanding prima donnas suited only to those who love roses enough to take on the Rose Tasks, they’re just another pretty shrub in the landscape.
And I will say this for them: in that bad, fungal spore–inundated flower bed I mentioned, my landscape roses (plus Munstead Wood, see below) are notably free of fungal disease.

Also, I think that's leaf tissue proliferating at the center of the bottom left bloom?? A rare but harmless growth disorder of flowering plants.
This comes at a cost, of course, at least if you’re a snob like me. I don’t think landscape roses are very interesting-looking - though of course they come in a wide variety of colors, the better to coordinate with the color scheme of your house! - and they are generally, tragically, without fragrance. While I can’t complain about anything that gets US gardeners to use less pesticides, they are barely roses to me. They are, in fact, the closest roses come to being an inanimate object, a decorative thing you can just plonk down in your garden wherever, like a tacky concrete statue. They’re a commodity; the enchantment is gone. I wouldn’t rip them out where they’re well-sited, but I sure wouldn’t plant more.
Now, this is incredibly mean to people who love landscape roses, but here goes. I’m reminded of a thread from r/Ceanothus, the California native gardening subreddit, that is now burned into my brain. OP asks for a native shrub recommendation, but not just any native shrub. OP wants a native shrub that will grow very tall, but also stay very narrow - 1’ wide in places. OP needs a native shrub that will grow thick and vigorous, to block out their view of the neighbors. OP needs this thing to be evergreen; OP presumably wants low water inputs. And OP needs all this, in a shrub that will grow in full shade.
In fairness, OP was polite about it, and this is a common problem for urban gardeners. The dark, untended canyon between buildings is a very common phenomenon in Californian cities. I too have a narrow, shaded side yard containing a tiny strip of crappy, gravelly dirt, that I’d love to grow something in: how do you think I found this post? Dear reader, I am very much at that devil's sacrament.
And the ceanothusheads of r/Ceanothus tried gamely. But one commenter replied with something that fully changed how I think about gardening:

Source: Reddit
Sometimes, what you need is not a living organism, with its own needs, that will change over time in ways you may not endorse, that interacts with the world around it. Sometimes what you really want is a man-made object. Sometimes what you want to grow in your tall, narrow, lightless, bone-dry side yard, for your privacy requirements, is a fence. And that’s what I think about landscape roses. In Mediterranean and desert climates, as long as there's enough sun, you can always fall back on planting a succulent. But not every location can grow succulents outdoors year-round. In temperate climates, landscape roses could probably be successfully replaced with a particularly attractive boulder. Or, if what you want is a smart-looking, easy-care hedge: consider a fence.
Review: I’d maybe rather plant a fence a succulent.
#10: 'Munstead Wood': the old English rose, reloaded
‘Munstead Wood’, my final acquisition, is a credit to another major modern rose breeding program, this time out of England: David Austin Roses. The main idea of the David Austin rose-breeding project seems to be combining the particular charms of traditional English old garden roses - their fragrance, their romantic, sophisticated forms - with the virtues of modern roses - continuous blooming, a wide range of highly Instagrammable colors - plus disease-tolerance that twenty-first century gardeners now expect. And judging by their singular impact on the contemporary rose market, they seem to have been very successful at that goal. The Reddit reviews are glowing, the forums are abuzz for their hottest new releases (Dannahue restock wen?), their most popular roses are often sold out, and other rose sellers have catalog filters for 'English shrub roses' that allegedly share the looks and fragrance of David Austin's best.

From the author's camera roll. 'I can't believe it's not Dave [sic] Austin!'
Their marketing is also very slick. Their website is very informative, with separate filters for various kinds of roses you might want to buy ('Best for fragrance', 'For a shady spot', 'Thornless or nearly so'), all the rose varieties have literary or historical names or else are named after charming British locations, and are all beautifully photographed in their idyllic show garden, and the prose is carefully engineered to incite lust in the winter-weary gardener. They even do periodic drops of new roses, like a sneaker company.
So last November, I allowed myself to buy one David Austin rose, 'Munstead Wood'.

Source: David Austin Roses
'Munstead Wood' is really gorgeous, I think, blooming in a deep burgundy color. The website claims the fragrance is "Old Rose, with fruity notes of blackberry, blueberry and damson".
An interesting fact about 'Munstead Wood' is that it is actually region-locked. David Austin Roses sells roses in both the US and UK (and maybe other places; sorry I am so American), but the climate of the UK has been changing, with more extreme weather events and even more rain. And you know how it is with roses and the rain. 'Munstead Wood' was no longer able to thrive, and has packed up its little rucksack and gone out to explore the world as a lone vagabond - specifically, America.
So how is it doing here? Great, actually. It may have been rained on every day for the past week, but at least it's not in England, I guess.
'Munstead Wood' has no fungal disease. It looks like it's never even heard of fungal disease. I'm pretty impressed! I can't actually tell you whether the roses are good, but this is a pretty good plant, which is a good start.
Review: I'm holding myself back from buying more David Austin roses right now. God help me, I have two more open full- to part-sun spots in my garden right now.
David Austin, "Lady of Shalott". Call me the Lady of Shalott the way I'm languishing in my tower, gazing only at the mere reflections of the real world (stuck inside, looking at my phone, because of the rain) and am about to throw myself in the river with longing (to be out in the garden)
#this was mostly written like a week and a half ago#delighted to report it has now stopped raining :)#gardening#plantblr#roses#botany#...kind of. not a botanist i just like reading about it#longpost#original content#(i hesitate to call this an 'effortpost': aside from spending an hour on wikipedia trying to graph out the various old garden roses#and their relationships with the species roses that spawned them - it just kind of happened.)

MAHADASHAS in Vedic astrology

So I have wanted to make this post for a very long time and since so many of you wanted it, here it issss😊😊
So in this post I am going to be going through what each mahadasha may bring you in terms of life occurrences. I am also going to be including example of specific placements that can be correlated to life events according to your natal chart also, because the mahadasha that you’re in now, looking at its placement in your natal chart influences it also.
**i am also going to include my own examples of my own mahadashas for referencing purposes
How to calculate your mahadashas?? A very handy website is farfaraway or another one would be astrosage.
what is a mahadasha?? Mahadashas are an integral concept in Vedic astrology, referring to extended periods in a person's life dominated by the influence of a specific planet. Each Mahadasha spans a fixed number of years, with its duration determined by the Vimshottari Dasha system, which assigns a total cycle of 120 years among the nine planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu). These periods are believed to shape significant events and themes in a person's life based on the nature, strength, and placement of the ruling planet in their natal chart. Within a Mahadasha, there are sub-periods, or antardashas, which further refine its effects.

will shifting ever be scientifically proven? a nerdy investigation. . .
reality shifting exists in a weird twilight zone between mysticism and science. on one hand, shifters claim full sensory experiences in different realities, describing their DRs as just as real—if not more real—than this one. on the other, skeptics dismiss it as intense imagination, an extension of lucid dreaming or dissociation at best.
so, will shifting ever be scientifically proven? will we one day have brain scans, peer-reviewed studies, and neuroscientific validation backing it up? or will it remain in the same category as astral projection and past-life regression—forever debated, never confirmed?
guys, this isn’t just a yes-or-no question. it’s a deep dive into how science deals with the unknown, how history has repeatedly proven skeptics wrong, and whether shifting might be next!!!
what science currently says: shifting vs. similar phenomena
while shifting itself hasn’t been studied in depth (yet), we do have research on similar states of consciousness—lucid dreaming, hypnosis, and even maladaptive daydreaming (to an extent). so, what does science say about these?
1. lucid dreaming: once called “impossible,” now neurologically proven
not too long ago, lucid dreaming was considered pseudoscience. the idea that someone could be conscious while dreaming sounded absurd—until researchers found a way to prove it.
scientists like stephen laberge used fMRI scans and eye movement signals from sleeping participants to confirm that lucid dreamers were indeed aware and controlling their dreams. we now know that lucid dreaming involves a unique interplay between the prefrontal cortex (responsible for self-awareness and decision-making) and the REM sleep stage.
before this research? lucid dreamers were written off as liars, delusional, or mistaking their dreams for something they weren’t. sound familiar?
2. hypnosis: once dismissed, now widely used in medicine
hypnosis was once labeled as stage magic and a party trick. today, it’s an accepted psychological phenomenon used in therapy, pain management, and even surgery (yes, surgery—some patients have undergone operations using only hypnosis as anesthesia).
neuroscientific studies show that hypnosis alters brain activity, shifting people into a highly focused state where the brain processes suggestions as reality. if science could accept that the mind can be influenced to perceive reality differently, why is shifting such a stretch?
3. maladaptive daydreaming: a new but recognized condition
maladaptive daydreaming wasn’t officially named until 2002, when professor eli somer identified it as a distinct phenomenon. before then, people struggling with excessive, immersive daydreaming were misdiagnosed with ADHD, OCD, or dissociative disorders.
now, we have concrete research proving that MD is neurologically distinct from normal imagination, linked to overactivity in the default mode network (DMN)—the brain’s self-referential system.
again, before science caught up, these people were called lazy, unfocused, or simply too imaginative. now? it’s a legitimate condition with ongoing research.
what can we take away from that? well, this formula, probably:
history repeats itself: the cycle of disbelief → proof → acceptance
science has a history of mocking what it doesn’t yet understand. let’s not forget that:
• germ theory was laughed at—until microscopes proved bacteria existed.
• deep-sea creatures? dismissed as sailor myths—until we developed better submersibles.
• lucid dreaming, hypnosis, and MD—all called “fake”, until research proved otherwise.
what does this tell us? if shifting is real, the fact that it hasn’t been proven yet doesn’t mean it won’t be. it just means science hasn’t caught up.
but, i like being thorough & unbiased, so i’ll list a few reasons i think or don’t think it’ll be proven!
reasons shifting might be proven
1. brain scans might reveal shifting-specific activity.
• fMRI studies could eventually show unique neurological patterns in shifting states, differentiating it from dreaming or imagination.
2. science is moving towards studying altered consciousness.
• lucid dreaming, astral projection, and out-of-body experiences are getting more attention in neuroscience. shifting could be next.
3. quantum theories suggest consciousness may not be confined to the brain.
• theories like the many-worlds interpretation propose infinite parallel realities—if true, shifting might be tapping into that.
4. hypnosis proves perception can be altered at a deep level.
• shifting might be a self-induced state where the brain accepts a different reality as real.
5. historical precedent shows that dismissed phenomena often get validated later.
reasons shifting might never be proven
1. there’s no scientific method to test it yet.
• unlike lucid dreaming (where we can confirm awareness inside dreams), there’s no current way to measure or prove someone is in a DR.
2. it relies on subjective experience.
• shifting is deeply personal—there’s no external way to prove someone’s consciousness is in another reality.
3. science still struggles to define consciousness itself.
• if we don’t fully understand what consciousness is, proving it can move between realities is even harder.
4. there’s no physical evidence of DRs existing.
• unless we discover parallel realities and a way to interact with them, shifting might remain in the realm of belief rather than science.
5. mainstream science is slow to accept unconventional ideas.
• even if shifting is real, it could take decades—or even centuries—for science to acknowledge it.
my verdict: will shifting ever be proven?
it depends on what shifting actually is.
• if shifting is a genuine form of multiversal travel, it might take quantum physics advancing far beyond what we currently know to validate it.
• if shifting is a unique altered state of consciousness, neuroscience might eventually find evidence through brain imaging studies.
• if shifting is something else entirely—something we don’t even have a framework for yet—it might never be proven in our lifetime.
but history has shown that just because science hasn’t proven something yet doesn’t mean it won’t. skepticism is often just delayed understanding.
so, will shifting be scientifically proven? not tomorrow, not next year—but if history has taught us anything, it’s that the impossible has a habit of becoming reality.
and when that day comes, best believe we’ll be the ones saying “told you so.”

Pick A Pile: How Your Ancestors Suffered & How You Reclaim Your Power In This Lifetime
Pile 1
Your ancestors struggled with financial unpredictability. They experienced extreme highs and lows—rising from poverty to wealth, only to fall back into financial hardship. This instability often stemmed from unforeseen circumstances, such as illness or mental health struggles, which disrupted their financial and career trajectories. Their lives were marked by periods of abundance followed by devastating losses, creating a cycle of uncertainty and instability.
How to Reclaim Your Power:
To break this cycle, you must learn the power of moderation. Burnout is not a badge of honor—it’s a warning sign. Your ancestors pushed themselves to exhaustion, leading to mental breakdowns and even hospitalization. Avoid repeating this pattern by prioritizing balance in all aspects of life: work, rest, diet, and personal time.
Engaging in emotional transformation is also key. Deep inner work—such as therapy, shadow work, and journaling—will help you integrate your light and dark aspects, preventing deep-seated mental health struggles from controlling your life.
Maintaining confidence and physical vitality is crucial as well. Develop a consistent exercise routine and practice daily affirmations to reinforce your resilience. By strengthening both your body and mind, you empower yourself to navigate life’s challenges without falling into the cycles of the past.
Pile 2
Your ancestral lineage was deeply affected by abuse and toxic relationships—particularly within marriages and partnerships. These cycles of dysfunction often left your ancestors feeling trapped, powerless, and unsupported. Many failed to confront the deeper issues in their lives, choosing instead to endure suffering rather than make the necessary changes. Fear, lack of courage, and external pressures—such as societal or religious judgment—kept them stuck in unhealthy environments.
How to Reclaim Your Power:
To break free, you must plan your life with intention. Unlike your ancestors, who often felt stagnant, you are being called to move—physically and emotionally. This may involve relocating to a different city, state, or even country to create a fresh start. Expansion is key.
Most importantly, don’t give up. Your ancestors surrendered too easily when faced with challenges, but you are meant to embody strength, tenacity, and resilience. Own your power. Seek environments that uplift you rather than judge you. Stop seeking validation from rigid institutions or individuals who will never fully accept you.
This lifetime is about embracing self-accountability—not relying on others for your success or healing. Release inherited self-doubt and harsh self-criticism. Believe in yourself. By doing so, you break the cycle of fear and limitation that plagued your lineage.
Pile 3
Your ancestors suffered from a lack of intellectual and personal freedom. Many were prevented from pursuing education, mastering skills, or gaining knowledge that could have transformed their lives. Opportunities were stripped from them—whether through financial hardship, systemic oppression, or restrictive societal expectations.
Their struggles extended beyond intellectual repression; secrecy and unspoken family tensions were also deeply ingrained. Many painful experiences—betrayals, losses, unresolved conflicts—were buried rather than addressed, creating a lineage marked by suppressed emotions and untapped potential.
How to Reclaim Your Power:
The key to breaking this cycle is balance. While discipline and responsibility are essential, you must also allow yourself freedom and joy. Loosen the grip of strict structure and perfectionism. Find playfulness in life—travel, explore, and pursue interests that bring you genuine happiness.
Additionally, reexamine your belief systems. Some of your inherited beliefs may be restricting you rather than empowering you. This lifetime calls for unlearning outdated mental constructs and redefining what truly aligns with you.
Learn when to let go. Not every battle needs to be fought, and not every past experience needs to be carried forward. Earn your knowledge, but don’t let your ego make you rigid in your thinking. Embrace both wisdom and flexibility. By integrating responsibility with spontaneity, you reclaim the intellectual and personal freedom your ancestors were denied.
Pile 4
Your ancestors were dreamers—deeply artistic, spiritual, and idealistic. They had grand visions for their lives but often struggled with follow-through, leading to unfulfilled potential. Many of them lived with regret over what they never accomplished.
Their ability to express themselves and chase their dreams may have been restricted by social ostracization or strict authoritarian rule. They may have been outcasted, silenced, or controlled by harsh external forces, preventing them from fully realizing their potential.
How to Reclaim Your Power:
In this lifetime, patience and pacing will be your greatest allies. You have the potential to build a beautiful life, but you must trust divine timing instead of forcing rapid progress. Rushing will only create setbacks—sustainable success requires careful nurturing.
Prioritize mental and emotional well-being. Your ancestors’ dreams were crushed, in part, because they lacked the support or emotional stability to pursue them. Engage in self-care, therapy, and mindfulness practices to maintain your inner peace and resilience.
Tap into your artistic and feminine energy—whether through music, dance, yoga, nature, or creative expression. These outlets will help you manifest your dreams. Your power lies in softness, creativity, and intuition.
Avoid unnecessary conflicts. Your energy is best spent cultivating peace, rather than engaging in battles that drain you. Embrace serenity, flow, and self-expression. By doing so, you bring your ancestors’ lost dreams into reality—transforming their struggles into a legacy of fulfilled potential.

Octomer Baby Development: A guide for new parents (Part 1)
Parenthood can be as fulfilling as it is challenging, and for new parents, this may seem like a daunting task to make. But with the help of this handbook, you will be walked over all there is to know about the newest member of your family and how to take care of them.
PHASE 1—THE EGG:
0-2 months:
The egg has just been laid. Roughly about the size of a bead. Though coloring may vary, most octomer eggs look transluscent with a bright colored center, in which the embryo is located.
Unlike octopuses, octomers only lay one or two viable eggs per mating cycle. This greatly increases their life expectancy as their digestive system no longer shuts down inlieu of producing viable eggs. Octomer eggs, like most marine life eggs, are extremely fragile and squishy. Parents often create a small nest out of weaved kelp, sea cucumbers, and soft live coral. These are not only meant to cushion the egg, but the toxic tendrils of the live coral help protect their precious offspting from predators.
Another difference to Otopus eggs, is their shspes. Since Octomer eggs aren't hung on the ceiling of an underwater cave, they lack that telltale teardrop shape most octopus eggs are known for, instead taking a more spherical form.
3-5 Months:
On this stage, the egg is about the size of a ping pong ball. Eyes and a mouth start to look visible and the embryo's body starts to develop the octomer's signature 8 arms. Though poor, their sight and hearing will develop and the embryo will start reacting to sounds and light. It is recommended parents start talking to the egg to incentivize development.
It is common for octomer parents to carry their egg around in small pouches or bags so the embryo can be stimulated by outside sounds and light fluctuations at different sea levels.
5-7 months:
Most of the octomer's body is fully developed at this point and sex can be determined by the lack or prescence of a hectocotylus. The outer membrane of the egg also starts to lose color and become more fragile as the embryo absorbs more nutrients. The egg is about the size of a billiard.
At this point, it is not recommended to move the egg, as it could possibly harm the delicate shell and cause premature hatching.
7-9 months:
After absorbing all the nutrients from the egg, the octomer baby is expected to pip and hatch around this time. The outer layer is expected to be completely transluscent as all nutrients have been absorbed, and instead all coloration has been transfered to the newly hatched baby.
At this stage, their chromatophores aren't fully developed, and as such, most octomers at this stage only have light pale coloration alongside freckles or marks reminiscent of their specific species. Octomer babies have also not developed the ability to create water jets, and due to their small size— around the size of a baseball— can be swept by ocean currents. This is why, most octomer babies will be constantly in the care of their parents up until they've reached 24 inches or 61.4 cms in size.

We're appreciating these pro-endo posts as an endogenic, especially the fact you account for traumatized endogenics (we at least notice "usually" and other such words in a lot of posts, and were taught at a young age how to analyze shit because of being autistic) so like...thanks. :)
Hopefully y'all are okay, anti-endos are really showing their asses this time in your asks. And we hope everyone else realizes they have always been that bigoted.
hey of course, thanks for sending this ask!
yeah i don't know why people don't understand that endogenic systems can... also have trauma. like. endogenic doesn't mean 100% free from trauma. anyone can have trauma. trauma doesn't always manifest in the most extreme forms possible like dissociative disorders. like i cannot stress enough that dissociative disorders are a very specific kind of plurality, and should NOT be used as a metric to gauge whether or not someone's plural experience is legitimate or not. the diagnostic criteria for dissociative disorders is so painfully restrictive that a lot of people who probably do have a dissociative disorder don't get the diagnosis because it's so fucking specific
and again, i just want to stress that endogenic systems literally are not hurting anyone. you are not spitting in my face or talking over me as a system with DID. you are being respectful by using a term that suits your experience way better. like idk how that is offensive to people. endogenic systems developed a term to express a specific type of plurality. that's not trying to mock or ape on dissociative plurality. it's not an attempt to talk over dissociatives. it's creating an entirely new conversation that needs to be had
people getting upset about endogenic systems are creating mountains out of mole hills. it is quite literally a nothing burger of a problem. there IS no problem. nothing wrong is even happening. like i cannot overstate how fucking annoying it is when other dissociatives decide its time to get on their high horses and act as if they're suddenly experts on psychology and mental health. like it really pisses me off when other plurals with dissociative disorders decide the entire plural community is about them. the dissociative disorder communities are about plurals with dissociative disorders. specifically. you can still occupy spaces made for people with DID, OSDD and so on and leave endogenics alone and the world will keep turning. the sun will rise tomorrow regardless.
learn to mind your own goddamn business if you can't respect that other people experience the world differently than you do. maybe, just maybe, the dissociatives who are intentionally going out of their way to mock and harass endogenic systems are the fucking problem, here. you don't get to be a fucking bully just because you have trauma. you don't get to attack and hurt people who haven't hurt you just because you were abused. that's literally fucking perpetuating the cycle of abuse. if you think to yourself that because you are traumatized, that it's okay to take your anger out on people who have no trauma, you seriously need to reassess your life. what does that do for you? temporary catharsis? a rush of dopamine that lasts mere seconds? chasing the high of harassing strangers will not undo what was done to you in the past.
as a dissociative- i only understand what dissociative plurality is like. i do not understand other forms of plurality. and you know what? i don't find the fact that other types of plurality existing offensive to me. it's just not. i've been very close friends with so many endogenic, spiritual, natural, etc. systems out there over the years. i have never found it offensive for anyone to say "oh hey i'm plural too!" and then explain a different plural experience than the one i have. thats why the term plural even exists, because it encompasses a broad range of plural experiences, not just dissociative ones.
like, to the dissociatives who are pissed off that endos exist: literally stay in dissociative disorder-centric spaces and tags. they're right there. you HAVE a community that you can interact with who understand exactly what you're going through. if it offends you that you find a VARIETY of plural experiences in the general plural community- that community isn't for you. like seriously. if it offends you that deeply that other types of plurality exist- the general plural community is not for you. it's literally not made for you if you can't except that numerous types of plurality exist. you have spaces you can occupy that ARE made 100% for people just like you. you can quite literally stay in spaces made for dissociative plurals only. like. you can do that. that's an option. and you can stop bullying other people out of spaces that they rightfully belong in.
trauma is never excuse to be a fucking jackass. it's perpetuating the cycle of abuse. that's nothing to be proud of. break the cycle. stop abusing people just because you were abused.

Sometimes I wonder if Shen Yuan is Shen Jiu himself, just from a different timeline. Shen Yuan is what Shen Jiu could have been if he had the right upbringing — A Sharp, cutthroat nerd with a silver tongue.
People oftentimes forget that Shen Yuan is actually pretty smart when he is not freaking out or fanboy-ing. Maybe not going through the same sickening circumstances of the PIDW world never lead him to develop the wicked shrewdness of Shen Jiu but there are still some uncanny similarities.
Since, some people theorise that Shen Yuan used to be chronically ill in the modern universe, it forces me to think if Shen Jiu ever incurred severe soul damage from Bingge's torture that lead him to be reborn with a weak constitution in the modern universe. The only purpose of Shen Yuan's life could have been to atone for his sins and break the cycle of abuse in the PIDW universe. And everything was planned and settled by the superior being that is the "System" as it cut through and merged different realities and timelines.
It's a different kind of multiverse of madness.

Charlie, are there any new evolutions you'd be particularly excited to see discovered? My youngest is obsessed with Lapras, and when I explained why they wouldn't make a good pet in our 3rd floor apartment, she just said she'd wait for a pre-evolution to be discovered, haha!
i'd be really interested in seeing evolutions for single-stage bug pokemon being discovered- pokemon like heracross and durant. so many bug type pokemon evolve as a necessary part of their life cycle, which is different to how the vast majority of pokemon handle evolution! so it really intrigues me that there's such a difference in how these pokemon develop. i think it would help us understand why some bug pokemon develop into their adult form without evolving while others have to evolve. after all, heracross start out as funky little grubs...but their growth into adult form involves metamorphosis without evolution. meanwhile, orbeetle has to experience two evolutions to reach its adult form! we have some theories as to what the advantage of having two different developmental systems within the same phylum is, but it'd be nice to have more data to look at.

Wet Beast Wednesday: cave fish
Prepare for a deep dive today. Not because I'm going to be more in-depth than usual, but because we're talking about caves. Which are deep. In the ground.... Yeah, you get it. Today is going to be a bit different from my normal WBW posts. Instead of going in depth on a particular species or group of related species I'm going to discuss common adaptations fish evolve to live permanently in caves and then go over a few species I find interesting. Let's get spelunking.
(Image: Typhleotris madagascariensis, a typical cave fish. It is a small fish with an entirely white body and smooth skin where the eyes would be on a normal fish. It is resting on rocky sediment. End ID)
Caves are not an easy place to live. There's no light, limited food, often low oxygen levels, and the threat of collapse or rockfall. Cave-swelling animals (collectively called troglofauna) need a number of special adaptations to survive and there is little room for error. Troglofauna that are strictly aquatic are called stygofauna. Troglofauna and stygofauna can be divided into three groups based on their life history. Troglophiles and stygophiles complete part of their life cycle in caves and part outside of them. A classic example of this is the many species of bat who seasonally inhabit caves to give birth and mate. Trogloxenes and stygoxenes are animals who will visit caves, but do not require time in caves to complete their life cycle. An example trogloxene would be a bear who takes shelter in a cave during winter. Finally, troglobites and stygobites live their entire lives in caves and never leave. The fish I discuss today are stygobites. Because troglobites and stygobites generally will die outside of their caves, they have very little opportunity to disperse. As such, many cave fish species are found only in a single cave or cave system and are entirely dependent on the health of their homes to survive.
(Image: two cave catfish sitting next to each other on a rock. They are white with elongated anal and rear dorsal fins, and no eyes. End ID)
Many cave-dwelling animals develop a set of common adaptations called troglomorphism. Cave water is often high in minerals but low in oxygen and food content. To survive, the fauna develop very slow metabolisms, allowing them to last a long time on limited resources while slowing down movement and other active systems and increasing age. These species are also typically smaller than their epigean (above-ground) relatives, further reducing their energy requirements. Slowed metabolism results in comparatively slow development. Cave species take much longer to mature and reproduce then related epigean species. Many species further decrease their energy consumption by moving as little as possible. Many species of cave fish are able to last long periods of time between meals without negative impacts to their health. They will binge eat whatever they can find and then subsist on fat stores while food is scarce. One test in captivity showed that a Phreatobius cisternarum (cave catfish) could go a while year between meals and stay healthy. Cave species are usually opportunistic generalists as they can't afford to pass up resources. Much of their food will originate outside of the cave, either directly or indirectly. Water flow into caves brings in algae, bacteria, plankton, and other food sources. Other more indirect methods of introducing include bat feces. While the fish may not eat the feces directly, other species may do so and potentially become prey to the cave fish. The feces also introduces nutrients from outside the cave that encourages the growth of other food sources like bacteria, fungi, and planktonic animals.
(Image: Amblyopsis hoosieri, the hoosier cave fish. It is a very simplistic fish with no eyes or scales. End ID)
Life in a cave comes with a different sensory requirement. The complete lack of light makes vision useless. You don't know dark until you've seen cave dark. Fun fact: caves are so dark that sighted people can start hallucinating in them because our brains aren't evolved to handle zero visual stimulus and will start making stuff up to fill that gap. As a result of the utter darkness, many species of cave fish are blind. They either evolve to completely lose their eyes or have the eyes considerably reduced in size and function. Eyes take up a lot of energy to maintain and in caves, there is a lot of selective pressure to get rid of organs that aren't useful there. Despite the blindness, many species retain some form of photosensitivity and will flee from light. Cave species also often lack skin pigmentation. Skin pigment has two primary uses. It protects the skin from ultraviolet light in sunlight, and provides skin coloration that can be used for camouflage, displays, warnings, and so on. In an environment where there is no ultraviolet light and everyone is blind, skin pigment serves no real purpose and is lost. As a result, most cave species are white or translucent. The lack of pigment may be a reason so many species remain photosensitive. Without pigment, they would be highly susceptible to sunburn or skin cancer from ultraviolet light. Caves also have a sound dampening effect that makes hearing less valuable. Reduced eyes and pigmentation is also seen in deep sea fish that live too deep for light to reach. Even those species still use visual curs more than cave fish due to the abundance of bioluminescence in the deep ocean.
(Image: Sinocyclocheilus longicornus, a recently discovered species. It is a fish with translucent skin, revealing the skeleton. It has a long shout with two pairs of barbels. Emerging from the upper back is a horn-like protrusion. End ID)
With vision off the table, cave fish rely on other senses. chemoreception through taste and smell are strongly selected for as traits that can direct cave animals toward food or away from threats. Another sensory system fish have is the lateral line. The Lateral line is an organ system found on each side of a fish where modified skin cells called hair cells detect motion in the water. The lateral line allows fish to sense movement in the water around them, informing them of water flow and the movement of food and threats. Cave fish typically have a well-developed lateral line system that compensates for the lack of vision. Many fish perform displays for various reasons, such as attracting mates. These displays are typically visual, but in cave fish, that isn't an option. Instead, their displays are more focused on moving the water in ways that can be detected by lateral lines. Some species of cave fish maintain additional sensory abilities from their epigean ancestors. An example of this are cave catfish, who retain the barbels and electroreception common to their kind.
(Image: six Phreatichthys andruzzii. They are long, eyeless, white fish. The blood-filled gills are visible through its translucent skin, seen as a large red patch on the head. End ID)
Before moving on to specific species, it should be noted that cave fish is not a taxonomic category. Cave fish come from many different lines of descent and independently evolved similar adaptations to cave conditions. These similar adaptations are seen in most cave fauna, not just fish, and are collectively called troglomorphism. There are about 300 species of cavefish known to science.
Ophisternon candidum, or the blind cave eel, lives in north Australian caves that are connected to the ocean. Because these caves intake salt water, the pools and streams within them can become very salty, resulting in the eels developing a tolerance to a high range of salinity. They are rare, having been spotted under 40 times since 1959, and thus little is known of their lifestyle. We do know they burrow into sediment and secrete mucus to keep those burrows stable. Males seem to build burrows to woo females. They have been bred in captivity for use un laboratories. At up to 40 cm long, they are huge for cave fish and used to hold the record for the largest species known until another species was found that's even bigger.
(Image: an eel with translucent, pink skin, no eyes, and ribs visible through the skin. It looks somewhat like an earthworm. End ID)
The actual largest known cave fish is Neolissochilus pnar, which gets up to 40 cm while being more massive than the eel. They are found in a single cave system 100 meters underground in India. The primary food source in the cave appears to be debris from the nearby forest that is washed into the cave during seasonal flooding. The fish may have been known to locals well before it was scientifically described, as there are stories of white cave fish going back over a century in the region.
(Image: a small fish with no eyes, white skin, and a long snout with barbels on it)
The Alabama cave fish (Speoplatyrhinus poulsoni) may be the rarest species of freshwater fish in the world. They live exclusively in key cave, Alabama, USA and no more than 10 have ever been seen at a time. The population is estimated to be under 100, below the generally accepted minimum viable population for a species of 200. Fittingly enough, this means a species only found in Alabama may be severely inbred. They are believed to be triggered to mate by seasonal flooding and may be mouth brooders. Climate change-caused changes to flooding and toxins leaking into the groundwater from sewers are currently threatening them with extinction.
(Image: a long, white, eyeless fish with an elongated snout. Its skeleton is visible through its skin. End ID)
Typhliasina pearsei, the Mexican blind brotula or dama blanca ciega (blind white lady), lives in the cenotes of the Yucatán peninsula. Cenotes are sinkholes filled with groundwater and the ones in the Yucatán are often connected by underground caves, rivers, and aquifers. The fish are apex predators who eat shrimp and mysids and are known to coexist with other cave fish in part of their range. As with other brotulas, they are a rare example of a bony fish that gives live birth. Because of how interconnected and numerous the cenotes are, this species has one of the largest distributions of all cave fish.
(Image: an eyeless white fish with a long tail and elongated rear dorsal and anal fins. It is next to an orange rock. End ID)
Cryptotora thamicola, the cave angel fish or waterfall climbing cave fish, is the adrenaline junkie of the cave fish world. Most cave fish live in slow-moving or still water, but this daredevil lives in rapids. But just living in rapids isn't extreme enough, these guys climb waterfalls. Their large fins with hooked fin rays let them cling onto the rocks while facing into the current. They then allow food to flow right into their mouths. Unlike other walking fish, the waterfall climbers have a well-developed pelvic girdle and walk in a style very similar to tetrapods, with front and back fins alternating strides. This has made them very interesting to evolutionary biologists studying the transition from fish to tetrapods.
(Image: a typical cave fish with very large pectoral and pelvic fins. End ID)
The Mexican tetra (Astyanax mexicanus) is an example of a handful of fish species that have a cave form and a non-cave form. Most Mexican tetras are perfectly ordinary tetras, but one population has adapted to cave living and has developed trogomorphic traits. The cave from lack pigment, has tastebuds on its head, lacks eyes, and can store more body fat. While you would expect such radical physiological differences to mean the two populations are different species, they aren't. The two populations are fully capable of producing fertile offspring and do so in the wild. If you've ever seen a cave fish in person, there's a good chance it was one of these as the cave form has entered the pet trade and they do very well in captivity, making them the most studied cave fish.
(Image: the non-cave and cave forms of the Mexican tetra seen next to each other for comparison. The non-cave form is a fairly typical silvery-green fish. The cave form is slightly more robust, white, and eyeless. End ID)
Because most cave fish are found only in a singe cave or cave system, they are fully dependent on the health of that cave. Caves tend to be very stable environments, which results in the inhabitants being pretty bad at adapting to change. Changes in water flow, introduction of new species, and pollutants can seriously harm or wipe out whole species. Many species of cave fish are rated as endangered or critically endangered based on their low populations and vulnerability to change.

Chapter 11 [Draft]
Sung Jinwoo/Trial Player!Reader
CW:
Inspired by @circeyoru ‘s “Future Power Couple”
[Masterlist🦋✨️]
Jinwoo let out an appreciative whistle as the never-ending notifications of quest progress and constant experience points rewards flooded his vision. The system's endless stream of updates rang in his ears, but his attention was fixated on the spectacle before him.
He’d known you were powerful, but this—this was something else. Like clockwork, your butterflies danced alongside his shadow soldiers, each fulfilling its unique role with almost surgical precision.
It was mesmerizing to watch. If Jinwoo’s army was the raging storm that tore the battlefield asunder, then your butterflies were the fertile earth that absorbed the waste to nourished new blooms. Every time his shadows felled a demon, your butterflies were there, siphoning off the residual life force, sustaining the field magic you’d set up across the dungeon floor. The ground transformed with every passing wave, becoming a lush, glowing field of flowers that pulsed with mana, like an otherworldly garden born from the chaos of battle.
In tandem with your abilities, it was like a seamless, self-sustaining factory—a constant cycle of destruction and rejuvenation, each supporting the other, each kill feeding the next. Jinwoo couldn’t help but be impressed; it felt like he was witnessing a well-crafted symphony unfold with every movement.
It was a sight he’d come to appreciate.
You and Jinwoo had developed an unspoken rhythm; wherever his shadows charged, your butterflies followed, siphoning mana to sustain the field, themselves, you, and his shadows, keeping the battlefield under control while preserving Jinwoo’s strength.
But the illusion of control shattered all too suddenly.
---
It was his mistake, to have underestimated the Avaricious Vulcan.
The creature was more powerful than he’d initially gauged, and his shadow soldiers paid the price, struck down by one devastating blow. Jinwoo’s eyes narrowed, his blood simmering at the sight of his shadows being wiped out.
But it was when he caught sight of you— in the chaos, you, standing just a little too close, had acted on instinct. You threw up a defensive spell to protect the few remaining soldiers, to mitigate the damage, to keep Jinwoo’s forces intact.
Vulcan’s brutal attack collided with your barrier, the impact sending tremors through the ground. Jinwoo watched in horror as a crack appeared in the shield, and then another, until a final impact shattered the barrier.
The force sent you staggering back, stray fragment of energy slashing across you. Red splattered against the stone floor and you clutched your arm, keeping the line of crimson from further dripping down.
Jinwoo’s heart plummeted.
Just a scratch, you assured him softly, even as you kept your gaze ahead, even when you didn’t exactly see his clenched fists and the tense line of his jaw. You brushed off the trail of blood trickling down your forearm, yet Jinwoo could see the strain in your eyes, the tight line of your mouth, as you keep the new barrier up.
In that moment, it didn’t matter that the injury was small, or that you were more than capable of handling yourself. You were hurt.
You’re injured because of me.
The thought repeated in his mind like a mantra, each repetition stoking the fury burning inside him. His eyes blazed with a darkness that even the shadows shuddered under. He watched you, still standing firm, healing his soldiers and maintaining your field magic with a calm expression, as if this was nothing. As if you were used to being hurt like this.
But for Jinwoo, it was unacceptable.
The last shred of restraint Jinwoo had been holding onto snapped, a deadly calm settling over him. His gaze shifted to Vulcan, who stood in the center of the battlefield, roaring in triumph. Jinwoo’s face hardened, his body radiating a dark, formidable aura as shadows coiled around him.
The creature would pay, dearly.
---
Avaricious Vulcan had already been beaten into submission, yet Jinwoo showed no signs of stopping. His blades came down again and again, relentless, merciless, as if trying to erase its very existence from the world, cleaving through the demon's corpse even after it was already lifeless.
Blood sprayed in an arc, staining the cold stone floor as Jinwoo's strikes grew increasingly savage. Each strike sent flesh splattering, turning the ground into a mess of nauseating colored gore. The shadows that usually moved with his will hesitated, sensing their master's uncontrolled fury.
You stood a few paces away, watching, uneasiness tugged at your chest. This was not how it was supposed to go. You remembered this battle vividly, you remembered Jinwoo being decisive, efficient, and ruthless, but never needlessly cruel. The Avaricious Vulcan should have been slain and left behind, not desecrated into a mangled heap.
You knew Jinwoo was kind. Despite his often-intimidating presence, Jinwoo was the sort of person who protected others. But now, watching him hack away at the demon’s remains, all you could come up with in your mind was the minor wound you’d brushed off…
He’s doing this because of me, you realized, swallowing hard.
Seeing Jinwoo unravel like this, seeing him go so off the script, lost in a frenzy, was more than unsettling. You were temporarily an ally, an accomplice in his journey, nothing more. So why was he reacting like this?
It was then that your system’s voice rang in your mind, urgent, almost... panicked?
[Stop him.]
You blinked at the faint tremor you hadn’t heard before. The urgency in its tone sent a chill down your spine.
“On it,” you muttered under your breath, to reassure the system and willing yourself to push down the anxiety tightening in your chest. You had to calm him down—Jinwoo was losing himself in this rage. You could see the way his shoulders were heaving, how his breaths came in harsh, ragged gasps. The quiet kindness you had once admired in him was being swallowed whole by something darker, something feral.
Taking a steadying breath, you took a tentative step forward, cautiously.
Jinwoo was a storm incarnate, his eyes glowing as he prepared to swing his dagger again, his shadows writhing in sync with his fury. The smell of demon flesh and metal filled the air, and you could feel the oppressive weight of his mana suffocating everything around him.
The chaotic energy was crackling against your skin like static. For a moment, you hesitated, wondering if he’d even listen to you. But you couldn't afford to wait. You needed to reach him.
With gentle hands, you reached out, tugging lightly, gingery, on his blood-stained sleeve. The touch was so feather-light, but it was enough to break through the red haze clouding his mind.
“Jinwoo,” you called softly, your voice carrying an edge of calm and firmness that even surprised you. “That’s enough.”
He froze mid-slash, blades trembling in his grasp. For a heartbeat, he didn’t move, didn’t even seem to breathe, and then he slowly turned his head to look at you, his dark eyes still burning with the remnants of his rage.
There was nothing but the echo of his heavy breathing and the distant crackling of flames. His gaze was wild, unfocused, but as he looked into your eyes, the darkness began to recede. The tension in his shoulders slowly eased as if your voice was a balm to the fury that had consumed him.
You offered him a practiced smile, hoping it looked more convincing than you felt. Your <Act> sub-skill was working overtime, masking the unease that continued to gnaw at you.
“I’m fine,” you reassured, willing him to see reason, gesturing to your healed arm. The tear in your battle suit was the only evidence that you had been hurt at all. The skin beneath was smooth and unscarred. “See? All good. Don’t waste your energy here, alright?”
His gaze flickered from your face to your arm, then back again. There was a silence between you, heavy and tense, as if the air itself was holding its breath. Finally, Jinwoo’s grip on his blades loosened, and they dropped to his side with a dull thud.
Jinwoo didn’t speak, the storm in his eyes still simmering, but there was a hint of something else—something raw and conflicted.
You let go of his sleeve, stepping back to give him space to collect himself. For a moment, you feared he might return to the demon’s corpse and resume his onslaught, but instead, he looked down at his blood-soaked hands.
Slowly, as if coming to a decision, he extended his hand toward you. Hesitant, unsure whether you’d take his hand, fingers trembling ever so slightly.
The look in his eyes was different now—soft, almost vulnerable. It was a silent gesture—a truce, an apology. You could see the regret etched on his face; the weight of his anger now replaced with the realization that he had lost control.
Your heart ached at the sight. For all his strength and power, Jinwoo still carried a burden that you knew too well.
Without hesitation, you accepted his hand, not caring for the sticky feeling of blood as your fingers intertwined with his. The contact was warm, grounding, and Jinwoo held onto you as if to anchor himself. His grip was gentle but firm, his thumb brushing over your knuckles, a silent vow.
He wouldn’t let this happen again.
In response, your fingers curled around his in silent gratitude.
“Let’s keep moving,” you said quietly, your voice barely more than a whisper. “We’ve got a long way to go, and no time to waste.”
Jinwoo nodded and gave your hand a last gentle squeeze before he released it, his gaze never leaving yours. As he turned to lead the way, you fell in step beside him, your earlier concerns lingering but softened by his unspoken promise.
Your children followed, some fluttering closer to Jinwoo, dimming their shine as to not hurt his eyes.
As they let out a calming, warmth glow; you spotted, in the corner of your vision, the discreet, multiple eyes in Jinwoo’s shadow peering up at you, grateful.
The both of you might not know what place did you held in Jinwoo’s life yet—but that fragile thread woven between you was a thread that Jinwoo was slowly, cautiously starting to grasp onto.
---
After sorting through the spoils from Vulcan’s defeat, Jinwoo glanced up, only to be met with Igris, who proudly presented the severed heads of Vulcan’s guards as trophies. Jinwoo stifled a sigh at the sight, feeling a faint tug of exasperation. “Can you not do that?” he addressed Igris, raising a brow at his stoic knight’s enthusiasm. “Because of you… he’s doing the same thing.”
True enough, Iron came lumbering up behind Igris, dragging Vulcan’s massive head behind him. The demon’s face was barely recognizable, mangled from Jinwoo’s earlier rage-fueled onslaught. Iron looked ridiculously proud of his “contribution,” puffing out his chest in triumph. Jinwoo could only shake his head at the theatrics, a bead of sweat sliding down his temple.
Just then, his attention shifted as a soft fluttering sound filled the air. Your butterflies were drifting near Vulcan’s remains, their delicate wings glowing faintly against the shadows. Jinwoo watched as they circled around the demon’s head. He narrowed his eyes, noticing the strange way they lingered, hovering just slightly out of reach, almost... expectant.
He watched them, noting their curious, almost polite pauses as they waited. Jinwoo’s mouth tightened, torn between amusement and bewilderment. He had the strange sense that they were asking him for permission, patiently waiting for a signal.
"...Fine," he relented at last, sighing as he waved a hand in mock exasperation.
The butterflies immediately descended, settling over Vulcan’s corpse like a layer of shimmering dust, their wings pulsating as they siphoned mana from the remains. Jinwoo watched in fascination as they absorbed the lingering energy, revitalizing their own magic reserves. He felt the faint hum of mana in the air as his shadows shifted curiously, drawn to the scene.
In the corner of his eye, Jinwoo noticed Igris stepping forward. One of his hands held the severed head of a guard that he had defeated, and with a gentle bow, he extended it toward a that particular red butterfly that flitted nearby as usual. The butterfly hesitated, hovering in front of Igris’s faceplate, and Jinwoo swore it looked like it was offering a silent “thank you” before settling over the trophy, glowing faintly as it fed.
Not to be outdone, Iron let out a proud huff and adjusted the Vulcan head he was lugging, his chest puffing out further as he soaked in the attention from his fellow shadows. One of your larger butterflies, a shade dimmer than the others, alighted on Iron’s horned helmet, fluttering its wings in what could only be described as encouragement. Iron’s smug expression grew even more pronounced, especially with a few shadow knights clapping in admiration.
A small laugh escaped from you, breaking the silence. Jinwoo turned to find you smiling at the whole scene, a soft giggle escaping your lips. It was rare to see you so relaxed, especially after the earlier battle, and the sound was oddly calming to him.
“(Name),” he called out, catching your attention.
“Hm?” You looked up, meeting his gaze, curiosity evident in your eyes.
“Here.” Without another word, he reached into his inventory and pulled out the Orb of Avarice. Carefully, he placed the glowing artifact into your hands, the faint warmth of the orb seeping through to you even through the fabric of your gloves. Jinwoo frowned for a moment.
Since when did you wear gloves?
You took a moment to examine the orb, studying the dark glow within its surface. Your eyes narrowed thoughtfully as you assessed its properties. After a brief moment, you offered it back to him, a gentle smile on your face.
“Thank you, Jinwoo,” you said, voice soft yet grateful. “But it doesn’t suit me. It only amplifies mana, and I’d rather it goes to someone who can make better use of it.” You glanced meaningfully toward his shadow soldiers. “Why not save it for one of them?”
Jinwoo considered this for a moment, feeling a bit of pride at your practical assessment. You never took more than you needed, never looked for an advantage that wasn’t truly necessary. He nodded, pocketing the orb and silently promising himself he’d find the right time to use it.
---
By the time you reached the 75th floor, the both of you had developed an efficient rhythm, moving through the upper levels with growing ease. The Demon Castle had taken a toll on both of you, but as Jinwoo’s power increased, so did the strength and efficiency of your teamwork. You’d learned to adapt to each other’s movements, each anticipating the other’s next step.
Jinwoo’s strength was more than enough for the foes that crossed his path, but he found himself unconsciously tracking your position each time, instinctively aware of your well-being in this dark, hostile place.
The final battle on the 75th floor brought you both face to face with Metus, the dark wraith-like entity that guarded the floor whose presence was so thick with mana that the very air seemed to grow heavy. Jinwoo had dispatched him in a brutal yet efficient display of skill, his shadows once again proving their loyalty and strength.
As the dust settled, Jinwoo watched as your butterflies once again went to work, their wings pulsing gently as they drained the last traces of mana from the fallen essence. The soft hum of their feeding filled the quiet space, and you stood nearby, eyes flicking over him in quick, practiced motions to assess any injuries he might have sustained. He’d taken a few hits during the battle, but nothing too serious; nonetheless, you were ready to heal him at a moment’s notice, the warm glow of your magic hovering just beneath the surface.
Occasionally, you stole glances at him, watching as he meticulously scanned through the system notifications that blinked in front of him. He moved through the rewards like clockwork, tallying his gains with calm efficiency. The notification stream continued, and he skimmed past the first and second rewards without much reaction.
But then, he froze. His eyes lingered on the third reward, the one that brought a different sort of light to his expression.
The recipe for the Holy Water of Life.
You knew what it meant even before he spoke, and your heart stilled at the sight of his face. This was the very item from the story, the one that would allow him to heal his mother—the one that would, for the first time, give him hope for the family he’d fought so hard to protect. You felt a pang of empathy watching him, knowing that the path you had witnessed as a distant reader was now unfolding before you, raw and real. Jinwoo’s eyes softened, his usual steely resolve slipping just for a moment, replaced by the quiet determination of a son who’d finally found a way to save the one person he couldn’t protect.
A week and a half had passed since you had entered this dungeon, battling alongside Jinwoo floor by floor. And now, the journey through the Demon Castle was finally nearing its end.
Jinwoo let out a deep breath, the faintest glimmer of a smile flickering across his lips. You couldn’t help but mirror it, feeling the weight of the moment settle around you. It was time to go back. The dungeon had tested you both, challenging your skills, your endurance, and even your resolve, but you had prevailed together.
“Ready to leave?” you asked softly, your voice breaking the silence as you looked up at him.
Jinwoo nodded, his gaze steady and unwavering. He turned toward the exit, his shoulders set with renewed purpose. You followed close behind, the familiar flutter of your butterflies trailing the both of you like a silent entourage.
As you walked, Jinwoo’s gaze lingered on your hand discreetly.
---
The Hanging Gardens were quiet tonight, the dim light of the moon casting a soft glow through your room. Kneeling on the bed, you extended your hand, palm up, inviting the small, fluttering forms of your butterflies to rest upon it. They swirled around you in gentle arcs, their wings flickering with a faint, ethereal glow. You watched them with tired eyes, a slight smile tugging at your lips as they danced in the air.
But tonight, something was different.
A few of your butterflies wavered in their flight, their once vibrant colors dimming. They hovered unsteadily, as if the very air beneath their wings had turned to lead. You frowned, a pang of concern tightening in your chest, as some of them stumbled weakly onto your open palm. Dark, inky marks marred their delicate wings, like patches of night blotting out their usual brilliance.
You cooed softly to them, your voice a barely audible whisper in the stillness of your room. “There, there,” you murmured, a soothing warmth flowing through your tone. Your fingers delicately brushed over their damaged wings, and as you did, the dark marks slowly began to fade. Under your gentle touch, their light returned, and they flitted back into the air with renewed vigor, their fragile bodies regaining their usual sparkle.
Once you were certain that none remained in distress, you let out a slow breath and allowed yourself to relax. Collapsing back onto the bed, you sprawled across the soft sheets, the exhaustion from the recent battles catching up with you. With a soft sigh, you peeled off your gloves, revealing the truth you’d kept hidden beneath.
From the tips of your fingers to the middle of your forearms, your skin had darkened to an inky black, the border jagged and uneven, shaped almost like butterfly wings against the pallor of your natural complexion. You stared at the darkened flesh, tilting your hand slightly in the moonlight. It didn’t hurt, and there were no signs of any negative effects beyond the discoloration. Even now, some of your butterflies had landed on your blackened hands, their tiny feet delicate and unbothered, curious about the change but unharmed by it.
This transformation had started around the 50th floor of the Demon Castle. You had noticed it after a while of using the mana siphoned from demons and undead alike. Despite your initial preparations, the contaminated energy had still seeped into your own magic, staining you like ink spilled on parchment. The mark gradually spreading and deepening with each floor as you tapped into more of the inhabitants' mana. Yet, strangely, it never caused you any pain, nor did it hinder your abilities. In fact, it almost felt… natural.
Perhaps that was what frightened you the most.
Even now, as you inspected the mark in the dim light, you felt no unease—only a quiet fascination. There were no side effects that you could discern, and you weren’t afraid; instead, you felt almost… detached from it all. Absentmindedly, you ran your fingers along the darkened patterns, wondering what this meant, what price you might have unknowingly accepted by using the energy in the Demon Castle.
The serene calmness with which you viewed the darkening of your skin, the nonchalance with which you accepted this new change—it was almost as if a part of you had always been expecting this. You couldn’t bring yourself to be afraid. Not of the darkness creeping along your limbs, nor of the tainted mana you were willingly absorbing. No, if anything, you were afraid of how little you cared.
Your eyes drifted to the window, gazing out at the distant horizon. For a moment, your thoughts strayed to a certain direction—a lingering solemn place, one you vowed to protect even if this sanctuary of yours came crashing down. Perhaps after you rested, you should go see her again, just to put your mind at ease.
But that was for another time.
For now, you emptied your thoughts, closing your eyes to the world around you. Breathing deeply, the connection you maintained with your butterflies hummed at the edges of your consciousness, connecting to one of your children that you had dispatched to always watch over Jinwoo. It was there, with Jinwoo’s mother.
Through its eyes, you saw him sitting beside her hospital bed, his expression softened in a way you rarely witnessed.
Your butterfly perched delicately on Mrs. Sung’s cheek, its faint glow casting a gentle warmth across her face. In your mind’s eye, you watched as her pallor seemed to improve: her pale face relaxing, complexion brightening just slightly, her breathing soft and steady.
Jinwoo’s eyes narrowed, a flicker of emotion passing through them that you couldn’t quite read.
His eyes tracking its slow movements. His hand moved slowly, reaching out toward your butterfly as if it were a fragile, precious thing. It didn’t move away when he cupped it gently in his palm, his fingers stroking the edges of its wings. There was something almost reverent in his touch.
For a long moment, he stayed like that, silent, contemplative.
Your eyelids grew heavy, the faint connection between you and your butterfly starting to blur as sleep tugged at you.
Just before you drifted completely into slumber, you felt a phantom, fleeting warmth settle on your forehead—a sensation like the tender press of lips, a touch so feather-light, almost as if it had never happened at all.
In the darkness behind your closed eyes, you unconsciously clung to that feeling, letting it carry you into the depths of a dreamless sleep.

Solar Return obs—
hey friends! i hope you enjoy the solar return observations down below, i sincerely appreciate any comment and feedback! 🤍

SR Moon in the SR 7h in virgo—afraid to trust, open up, and seeks to analyze self and others as a form of protection. The moon sitting here also signifies a connection that feels aligned with your growth and challenges you to face those fears. You can be more inclined to staying alone this year despite the relationship opportunities that arise, and looking at mercuries condition will tell you how your emotions will play out.
Venus 12h SR—The natives relationships feel more private, such as your financial resources, and your sensuality. There’s less of a spotlight, so this year it’s more about going inward and reflecting on how your past lenses have affected you. Whatever was unhealed (especially if Venus sits in a water sign) will come up, so think deep wounds, patterns overlooked in financial and relationship matters.
Mars debilitated in Taurus/detriment in cancer SR—Pay attention here, because your mars ruled houses in this chart will need more time, attention and energy. With mars weakened here substantially, these mars ruled houses can struggle. So let’s take mars in taurus 11h. Long term aspirations require in depth exploration, and patience. This year requires you to slow down and reassess your desires, are they feeding the same belief system enforced onto you (even if it was unhealthy)? Or do they truly cater to your personal growth? There can also be a revulsion around social media this year, a strong need for privacy. These natives can often be seen disappearing or just removing themselves from social media altogether. Friendships especially will be outgrown. If mars conjuncts NN retrograde, this is even more symbolic of a time of going inward, disconnecting and retreating from the social world.
Now the mars houses being observed for example: 4h and 5h are affected, in placidus, and so is the 10h. The natives year regarding family life and exploration of joy is heavily impacted due to authority figures, or a predominant father figure. There can be a sense of overwhelm, a sense of powerlessness under these circumstances, as the native is put into situations to take the lead and navigate partnerships, especially, family. This can be a big time in which the natives struggles with: should I choose myself or them? Especially if Chiron falls in the 10h, along with a weak Jupiter (heavily afflicted, or retrograde)
Jupiter is the protector so when afflicted it can indicate a struggle with finding emotional safety and peace internally, and externally. It can also signify the native feeling pessimistic, hopeless and stuck in their cycles.
SR Leo mercury 2h making an aspect to SR Saturn 8h in Aquarius—very interesting set up as the native is a charismatic, influential and seemingly powerful speaker and motivator. At some point the native is encouraged to communicate deeply and openly to someone or a group/ community of some kind, but feels strained and desolate. Think of it like this, Leo’s energy is warm and rambunctious, and very well the native has a charming presence, and the 8h is heavy, and cold with Saturn’s influence. When it’s time to face the horrors of their past and certain events play out for healing, it feels cold. A certain kind of cold sinking into their bones. Saturn 8h does thrive in growth through time, and consistent dedication and development. This can also mean communication skills will improve regarding boundaries.
Financially, the native can take an interest in the occult and seek to build their revenue through this. But with an opposition, this wont necessarily come easy, because there’s a certain heaviness and restriction felt either from learned conditioning about money, or the “taboo” topics they find themselves looking into. It may not even be motivated by financial means at first, but to liberate themselves from pain. They can also find themselves thinking deeply about the afterlife a lot more, and have a need to figure it out.
7h SR stellium in gemini—Interestingly enough this native was alone a lot through this year, even though we see the 7h as welcoming new connections. I think it’s because of the way the planets sit inside. SR Jupiter doesn’t do well in gemini and already struggles. SR moon tightly conj SR Jupiter, and mars has a weak conjunction to the moon as well. The native struggles to embody themselves in relationships, especially emotionally (sag 1h). It’s easier to flow mentally, and stay as the observer. SR Jupiter conj SR moon indicates powerful influence over emotions and such, when debilitated. There’s a struggle to externalize wisdom, as Jupiter feels full but restrained, so it prefers boxes and rigidity. Theres a tendency for self isolation here and analysis of oneself with gemini, leading to a lack of long term connection with others. The mind is overactive. The ruler of the 7h which is mercury, sits in Leo at 2 degrees, freshly entering the 8h. That energy makes more sense when look at it lol. There’s a need for sacredness from others, and respect for autonomy, and a sort of, “i need to protect myself,” which then translates into: isolation, which creates stagnation, and connections that are flimsy and not rooted. There’s potential, but no substance.
SR Saturn squaring the SR 7h—Well, this makes even more sense. Saturn also retrogrades which fails to provide structure and stability needed to handle the development of the 7h which we see as connections, social interactions, and people. There’s an inability to get around, and people act more as mirrors than supportive relationships. Saturn squares Jupiter and moon here equally, suggesting the native felt they performed better alone. Where does Saturn sit? The 3rd house. What the native wants and sees in their mind is not very well translated into their connections. There seems to be a split, confusion, or fantasy not meeting reality as Saturn retrogrades in pisces.
SR Venus in late gemini degrees (29) about to enter cancer—I love this blend of energy. Its not quite gemini or cancerian, but mixed, suggesting a need for flow emotionally. A need to step back from mental processing and get in touch with emotional processing, especially with that late degree. I love it because it helps the native realize analyzing may be more hurtful right now in their journey. Somatic releases become important too at this time. The native can take on a sensual approach to abundance and money as well, finding that when they surrender and let go, this abundance flows in.
