Jason and Roy crash-landed in Wayne Manor, tumbling into Alfred's weapons room. Roy groaned in pain, shoving Jason off of him and standing to his feet.
Roy: Ow, ow, I’m way too used to pain at this point. Is that because of being a hero or the heroin?
Jason (resting on the floor): Both.
Jason held out his hand, and Roy helped him up. They took a moment to survey their surroundings.
Jason (amazed): We’re in Alfred’s weapons room!
Roy: No way, this place is filled with guns and knives—wait, is that a crossbow?
Jason: Yeah, there are like five of them. He likes to have backups in case he doesn’t want to use a gun. I told you, Alfred uses weapons. He gives me a gun each month. He’s the best.
Roy: …I’ve never had a butler who did that for me. Stupid Oliver.
Jason chuckled, but when he spotted a shotgun hanging on the wall, he quickly made his way over.
Jason: You think he’ll notice if this goes missing?
Roy: Jason, there’s a plaque at the top that says "Gun That Won Me the War." I think he’ll notice. Also what war was he in?
Jason: He won’t tell me, but it involved killing a lot of Nazis and it wasn't world war two. I love this man.
Alfred (shouting from upstairs): I know someone is in there! If you want to live, don’t touch anything!
Jason (sitting down, not worried): I’ve landed here before; we should be fine. Just sit down.
Roy: I… Okay.
Roy sat down as the loud footsteps of a war veteran and butler approached. Suddenly, the door was kicked open, revealing Alfred, shotgun in hand.
Alfred: Break yourself, fools!
Roy: Break yourself? That’s what you shout while aiming a gun at someone.
Jason and Roy exchanged a laugh, momentarily confusing Alfred. When he took in the sight of them, along with the gaping hole in the ceiling and the presence of unintended guests, the annoyance on his face was evident as he lowered his gun.
Alfred: Bloody hell, I thought you were crooks breaking in! I could’ve shot you! You could’ve died! Yes, I could call Ra's, but you two are being very sloppy with your landings!
Jason: Yeah, I’m aware. Sorry.
Alfred: Right, fine. Just go upstairs and grab a snack. And don’t think I don’t know you took one of my guns. You can keep it, though.
Jason: Thanks, Alfred.
Roy: Can I have a crossbow?
Alfred: I’ll think about it. I swear, Jason, you have a knack for landing in here.
Jason: It’s not like this is the only room where you hide weapons.
Roy: There are more outside of that room? Isn’t Bruce against guns in his house?
Alfred let out a hearty laugh as he headed upstairs.
Alfred: That’s funny; you think I fear him or something? He’s well aware of my arsenal. He stopped trying to find all of them decades ago.
Roy: I underestimated Alfred so much.
Jason: It happens.

One Piece means a lot to me as a disabled person, which I think would be pretty surprising to anyone who only has a surface understanding of it. The supposed central theme of "follow your dreams" would be pretty alienating to someone like me, right? It really, really would be, if that's what it was actually about.
Tumblr media
However, that ignores that Luffy's dream is to be the most free person in the world. And to attain that goal, the first thing he does is find friends to live life with. Over and over again, from the very beginning, he takes on their burdens, all in the name of being the most free.
Do you see what that would mean to me, as someone who needs more help to get by than is considered culturally normal, to the point that it puts me in a whole socially manufactured category of "other"? Not to mention, because of the infantilization of me due to that category, because of being forced so squarely into the "cared for" role, taking care of other people is deeply meaningful and empowering for me. However, the myths of independence and universal natural ability often make it emotionally difficult for my loved ones to accept that care.
The fear of asking for help, the guilt of being cared for, the weight of someone you loved who could not be as free as you, the insecurity of not contributing enough, the fear that you were born wrong, the self-hatred that says you are not worth the effort, Nami Sanji Zoro Usopp Robin Chopper Franky Ace they all explore the painful obstacles to free connection. Through deeply impactful stories that weave beautifully into the larger one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All centered around this one person who views loving them and living with them and carrying them as essential to his freedom. Who cannot, for countless reasons, live a normalized life of Structured Relations. Who views exploring and bickering and suffering and laughing with them as the ideal way to live. Who repeatedly puts his life and limbs on the line to do so.
Tumblr media
To me, it is an ultimate privilege and freedom to carry other people's burdens. To care for them and live with them. This is central to my whole perspective, and is completely informed by my life experience as a disabled person. I rarely see it reflected back to me. Let alone as powerfully and beautifully as Luffy does.
Nor the other half of it, of wanting to create this life with people in ways that aren't socially normal or approved. Of creating many varied lifelong intimate relations among equals, rather than conforming to the expectation of choosing One Person to live life with and then Creating More.
The utter lack of roles and norms is just as integral and powerful to the exploration of freedom and connection! It is meaningful to me as a queer person, yes, but even this is deeply influenced by my disability. I could never be that One Person, despite everything I have to offer, there is logistically far too much that I cannot do to be someone's equal partner in this society that demands so much from all of us. However, even if I could, I wouldn't want to! It doesn't make any sense to me to only have two people navigate life together on such intimate terms. Can't the demands of society be more comfortably met in a group? Isn't life more fun that way?
We are taught that we can and must do everything ourselves, I just happen to be one of the people that never had a chance to buy into that lie. To learn very early not just the necessity of interdependence, but the joy in it. To learn that it is most comfortably lived with more people involved. To me, close relationships are, love is, a natural extension of that understanding. One Piece celebrates interdependence constantly from the start, while never pretending that it is always easy.
The obstacles to free connection that I mentioned before, they are interspersed throughout the story, and they are always met with "I do the things you can't do, and you do the things I can't do." With, "Of course I can't use swords you dumbass! And I can't cook either! I don't know a damn thing about navigation! And I can't lie! I know I can't live without help from a lot of people!"
These are intentionally impactful moments, and they define the series. I found it very fitting that the Fan Letter focused on a character who was empowered by Nami to feel free and live adventurously despite not being the most physically capable. The character is able by our definition, but the story is very affirming in a disability way, and it was extremely One Piece. I loved how it acknowledged this deep connection between One Piece and the lived reality of disability and celebrated it as integral as it is.
Tumblr media
I also believe that absolutely none of this is intentional. It is simply an earnest exploration of human relationships, emotions, and behavior, and it naturally arrives at a radical and disability-affirming viewpoint. Because we are the monkey wrench in the deeply unhealthy (lol) and dominant line of thinking that independence is all. So naturally anything that also disputes that thinking has a disabled-perspective feel to it. The best part is how much it doesn't give a fuck! One Piece is aggressively against conformity in human relationships, in a way that is hard to find in our new world of self-conscious authors.
It's also, you know, the worst part, in terms of all the outrageous bigotry and offensive character design, but god damn it if it doesn't elevate the good parts to unbearable heights. Even the bad character designs can sometimes be more impactful for their intentional "ugliness", when those characters are inevitably taken seriously despite their appearance and the stereotypes they play on, it hits hard every time. I do have a simple hatred for many choices, there is no pay-off for much of the awful problems in numerous character designs and dialogue. But no matter how upset I can be by those things, in the end they can't succeed in pulling me away from One Piece. It's just so crazy and unique and great and terrible and beautiful and I LOVE IT.

I got inspired to design my own version of Link and Zelda and may have gotten a little bit attached woops.
EXTRA DETAILS BELOW IF UR INTERESTED:
For the timeline, these two are placed after Twilight Princess. TP!Zelda is this Zelda’s great grandmother.
Link works for her parent’s potion shop, she delivers their potions to people and general stores all across Hyrule. I imagine in a game setting you would deliver potions as part of side quests and use the shop’s alchemy station as a cooking mechanic.
The goggles that Link wears are magic goggles gifted to her by Impa. I can see it functioning as a “Lens of Truth” type item that allows her to see through illusions (which becomes very relevant).
Unlike her other counterparts, this Zelda is HATED by her people. They don’t like the way she disregards people’s feelings in favor of finding the most logical way to solve civil conflicts. Awful rumors are often spread about her. She doesn’t notice this.
Zelda was given combat training by Impa mostly bc of Hyrule’s history of being taken over by evil. She wanted to be able to defend herself and her people should something like that happen during her time. She also just respects Impa a lot as a mentor figure.
Link had a major crush on Zelda when they were kids. Now that they’re no longer close she thinks she got over it, but girl is in denial big time. If the subject is brought up, she gets rly pathetic and tsundere abt it.
Zelda sees Link as weak and a bit of a thorn in her side. She hates how stubborn and reckless she is. Part of her wishes Link would give up and tells her to “stop pretending you’re a hero” bc internally, she thinks Link will get herself killed and doesn’t want that.
They basically have that dynamic where they are rly brutal towards each other and have a lot of unprocessed feelings, but also ultimately know everything abt each other and will sacrifice themselves for the other no questions asked.
To elaborate on the plot stuff, basically Zelda gets trapped in a mirror which was actually a gateway to a “mirror world.” Its basically Hyrule but everything looks reversed and it kinda looks like a dark fucked up version of the SS Silent Realms.
When Zelda and Link both look into a reflective surface at the same time, they can see and talk to each other. This happens the first time on complete accident btw.
Perchance these two learn that they have to work together to get Zelda back to Hyrule and in the process confront all their weird hangups abt each other and their awkward situationship. Who knows.

Mantis lords + friends!!!
the mantis lords are my darlings and I expand upon each of them in my adventures of new hallownest series! these doodles coincide with different episodes/arcs.
The youngest of the sisters (Biana) is the most curious about the world beyond their tribe, and one of her adventures takes her to the archives where she meets Quirrel.
Cloth has already earned the respect of the lords and the tribe. (I have many Cloth + mantis tribe hcs I should expand on later) and the second born lord (Siara) known for her fierce bravery is especially fond of her.
There is a really fun episode later in the series where the eldest sister (Oriana) meets the Sheo, and we explore that dynamic. The episode title is "war paint master" haha.
enjoy more mantis doodles !!! (they will maybe never end)

haunting the narrative -> haunted by the narrative -> haunting the narrative -> haunted by
#adventure time#fionna and cake#simon petrikov#betty grof#petrigrof#fan art#fanart#art#digital art#my art#just a lil something something i did for fun#adventure time has always been the show that makes me want to draw (i have SO many AT drawings from 2015 it's ridiculous)#but now I'm coming back to that ye olde passion with new digital art skills and many more evil tragic thoughts (thank you fionna and cake🙏)#i couldn't get the thought about them haunting and be haunted by the narrative out of my head so I had to make some art for it#the caption for this was almost: so who wears the haunted by the narrative in the relationship?#they take turns of course because damn these guys really do be having that tragic romance huh. hot potato cursed existence#never quite on the same wavelength. always out of reach. their love the very thing that dooms them to be apart. a love defined by absences#like two ships in the night passing each other by. except they keep trying to seek the other out. and so end up going in circles#the tragic dance of madness and sadness. lead on and i shall follow. ....so anyway...these two amiright?#/might/ have to write something at some point...maybe...#because like... ghosts are my thing. and these two...well. even when they aren't haunting the narrative they are still ghosts#never let themselves live in the present and okay I'm going to stop now. enjoy the art byeeeee#...AND they'll never be at peace because they'll always be reaching for a version of each other that no longer exists and#(i am dragged kicking and screaming from the room before i can devolve into a full blown meta)

Thinking a lot about how Simon himself is, in essence, a walking ship of Theseus. At what point between Simon and Ice King did he become a different person? The crown changed him, sure, but it mostly just scrambled what was already there in his brain. And we know that even after becoming “himself” again, he’s been fundamentally altered by the experience. Ice King is still with him, even if the crown isn’t.

Everytime I get into an mascot-horror type story/arg that presents the company and characters as “some huge thing of the past, now completely forgotten- the main character is uncovering stuff again” I always wonder what’s the online impact of it besides just fully forgotten
On one hand I know not everything is on the internet. A lot of shows and old media really are forgetting forever.
…But on the other hand I just know some, just one of these, HAVE to have someone who was to be obsessed to it to the point of creating some “hey remember this from our childhoods- what happened?” youtube video. Or someone writing and posting fanfic, making art no matter how obscure the franchise was. Or at least someone who DID do that years ago, and that stuff is still floating out there on the internet sphere.
At least with the args I’ve touched upon I haven’t seen the possibility of the main character finding out more (or even finding answers to some mysteries) via some randomly-obsessed internet stranger.
Or going the route of making a post, and video online and trying to find information there. Potentially collaborating with popular youtubers for help. Maybe it’s just because I follow too many youtube commentators who make videos on old/nostalgia content so it’s skewing my perception but…idk
