i don't like amy's rewritten lines in sxshg and i'm not even a sonamy fan. it's because generations is an existing game, and removing the crush on sonic is a step backwards for her character development. in the future im fine with her toning down the crush! i'd encourage it, i'd be happy for her to have made that realization.
but in removing it from a past game, we're led to believe she either never had the crush OR that she'd had that development offscreen already. and neither of these are things you should do with your character development. if they want amy to move on, do it in the comics! do it in a future game! fucking show it!!! don't just lie to us and say she'd already grown past it by generations which she very much did not, and don't try to say she'd never had it, which again, she very much did not!!
because robbing amy of a major part of her character at the time just feels so. wrong. you know how a story can't progress without conflict? something has to happen to make change. and saying amy never had a crush, or removing scenes showing them, is erasing what had to happen in order for her to grow as a character.
idk. like i said it's fine if they want her to grow, but you can't do that during a game from 11 years ago and try to keep it in the same point in the canon timeline. because has she even grown if she didn't have anything to grow from?

first of all rye 'hello fellow kids' ingellvar there is nothing in this world or any other I wouldn't do for you. second of all, considering where this story ends... I'm going to die. this conversation -- and how much he genuinely believes what he's saying at this point -- held up against the fact that in a couple of months max he's going to get her killed (well. that's how he feels anyway) and then go against everything she believed in and stood for as a person in the end and have to live forever with knowing that's how he honoured her sacrifice. (and live with how easy it is to live with, the way he doesn't regret what he did at all. she'll haunt him from time to time, that's fine, he's a watcher he's loved many a ghost before and will again. but that won't.) 'no one is beyond help? oh lace I'm so so sorry, wherever you are now please forgive me for who I am, but after what he pulled and by the time I'm done with him on my watcher's oath he will be beyond help. I'll hold every hand in this world that reaches back but his'. and she'll still be gone.
'or none of this matters'. im so fucking sad I feel sick *through tears* this is great I love fiction I love this game (embarrassingly genuine as is my wont)

my ass has, once again, failed at the make-fic-shorter edits by rewriting entire paragraphs for conciseness and accidentally adding 200 words to the chapter.
#texts.#it's fine it's fine. this chapter is the first major change in DTT from ACFD so it was bound to happen.#anyhoo. the rewrite for it is done it just needs to undergo one more round of polish before it goes live.#but it is saturday night which means it is time for me to head out for the rest of the day.#chap will probs be out late tomorrow.

having the master kneel in front of the doctor and litchrally beg her to kill them both. man i am NOT feeling normal about this.
#dw#barkbarkbark etc#anyway i'm gonna have to rewrite bits of the first scene of my fic but the rest is all fine so gold star for me#and i figured i would have to do that anyway since i was working off my recollection of events in an episode i watched 5 years ago#also extremely funny how much of the master's plan in that episode was spur-of-the-moment improvisation#and it sucked! hey man improv is your boyfriend(gender neutral)'s specialty okay leave it to her next time#he did manage to pull together some extremely cunt-serving cyborg monstrosities in the space of presumably a couple of hours at most#but the rest of the plan had some quite substantial flaws.

I think for me, the thing I always forget when asking people to read over my world is that majority of the time, unless I'm finished with a fic, I'm not actually looking for a beta. I'm looking for someone to help me on something specific that I'm stuck on. I want them to walk me through it. So when they go on to pick at other unrelated things, I get irritated. Like no! That's not what I asked for!!!!! >:C But in the end it's my fault for not being more specific. LOL
#rambles#the worst part is when they get hung up on something other than grammar/punctuation that needs to be fixed#'this scene is too sudden' or stuff of the sort#I GET SO MAD#everything i do in a fic is intentional#if i don't ask for concept or flow of the scenes help pls don't give it to me#flow of sentence is fine but not like..... things that will have a need for rewriting more than a sentence#I DID IT ON PURPOSE LEAVE ME ALONE#but the thing is i always forget to say that#so it's just me stewing by myself for no reason#EKOLU THESE PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO HELP YOU#but i get mad anyway#it's a good reminder to me to be more specific when i ask for help#my freminet fic is killing me#i need the most help with that one#ughhhhh#just put me to rest already

(even more designationless!reader…)
The idea had clung to you like a ghost, silent and persistent. A whisper of possibility, a gnawing what if that refused to let go, lurking in the quiet spaces between your thoughts.
It started as an offhanded remark- just a passing suggestion from an Omega medic flipping through your file, his frown deepening at the blank space where a designation should be. He’d leaned in closer, like he was sharing a deep secret even though you’d heard of it before.
“You know, there’s a new procedure. A way to synthesize a scent, balance your hormones. Might help you fit in better.”
At the time, you’d laughed it off, a dry, hollow sound. You were fine. You had learned to live without instincts, without scent cues. You had a pack now- wasn’t that such a wonderful thought? You, of all people, with a pack- and they never made you feel lesser for it.
But still…
Still, you would never stop noticing the way strangers hesitated when they got too close, noses twitching as they tried to find something that wasn’t there. The way some looked at you like you were an anomaly, a hollow space where something vital should be.
The pack never made you feel wrong. But the rest of the world did before and after them.
So, you started actually looking into it. Quietly; and what you found was terrifying.
The procedure wasn’t just some simple injection or pill, wasn’t like the time you got yourself a pheromone perfume. It was invasive- gene therapy, hormone treatments, scent gland augmentation. Synthetic pheromones would be forced into your system, rewriting the very foundation of your body’s chemistry. The risks of rejection and infections were high. The list of potential side effects was even higher- neurological damage, sensory overload, organ stress. Death.
It wasn’t just expensive. It wasn’t just painful. It was dangerous.
And yet, the thought had taken a root far too deep to be simply pulled out.
What would it be like to walk into a room and be known? To have a scent that soothed your pack, something that would mark them the way they marked you with touches and borrowed clothes and lingering words? The pheromone perfume had been temporary, but this- it could be permanent. A cure.
It took weeks before you built up the courage to bring it up to your pack; weeks of staring at catalogues and brochures, google searches all on the costs, the risks, the very, very few who had tried it.
Sitting in the nest one evening, curled between them, you hesitated before you gathered enough courage and spoke. “I found a way to get a scent.”
The reaction was immediate, though you weren’t surprised. They’ve likely heard of the procedure before.
Johnny turned his head sharply from where he had been sprawled beside you, brow furrowing. Kyle, who had been playing absently with your fingers, froze. John, seated at the edge of the nest with a book in his lap, went still. And Simon- Simon growled. A low, rumbling thing that vibrated through your ribs, curling up inside your chest like a warning.
“What the fuck are you talking about?”
Your throat went dry. “You know about that procedure, right?” your words were careful, hesitant. “It’s… expensive. But it can create a scent for me. A real one.”
Silence. Then-
“No.”
John’s voice was sharp, absolute. Not angry, not yet. But firm in a way that brooked no argument. A command all on its own.
Your stomach twisted, and a deep frown etched itself onto your face. “I just thought-”
“No,” Simon repeated, harsher this time, sitting up straight. His eyes burned into yours, dark and furious. “Who the fuck put that idea in your head?”
You faltered, the hesitant hope in your chest slowly fanning out. “It’s not- I wasn’t—”
“You dinnae need fixing, hen.
“It’s not about fixing,” you argued, pulse quickening. Why weren’t they giving you a chance to explain? “It’s about- I don’t know, being normal? Being able to-”
“You are normal,” Kyle interrupted, his voice thick, pain threaded around each word. “Christ, love, what made you think you weren’t?”
Frustration bubbled up, clogging your thoughts. “You don’t get it,” you snapped, and the words poured out, raw and aching. “None of you do. You’ve never had to live without it. Never had to wonder if you belonged because you don’t have the one thing that ties you to everyone else!”
John’s exhale was sharp, scrubbing a hand over his face and beard. He looked at you- really looked at you, and his face tensed even further. “And you think putting yourself through hell to force a scent into your system is the answer?”
You hesitated, exposed under their scrutiny, laid bare even in spite of the layers you were wearing.
“You’d risk your life for this?”
“People go through hormone therapy all the time-”
“Not like this,” Kyle shook his head, immediately cutting that line of thought off. “This isn’t just hormone theraph. This is gene-altering shit. You read the side effects, love? The risks?”
You had. And now, under their gazes, the weight of it pressed heavy on your chest.
Ghost shifted closer, holding your arm, face tight. “You’re not doing this.”
“You can’t just tell me what I can and can’t do with my own body!”
Price’s jaw tightened, eyes dark with something unreadable, something heavy. When he finally spoke, it was rough, edged with the kind of steel that only came from deep, unwavering conviction.
“You’re right.”
For a second, your breath caught, because you hadn’t expected him to say that. Did you-?
“We can’t tell you what to do with your body,” he continued, low but firm. “But we can stop you from hurting yourself. I will not allow you to go through that damn procedure.”
The words hit like a fist to the gut.
Simon exhaled sharply, tilting his head like he couldn’t believe you had even considered it. “You’d put yourself through that- all that danger, all that risk- just to what? Smell a little different?”
You swallowed, and then, after a heavy moment, nodded.
Kyle leaned in, wrapping himself around you, protective. “You,” he hissed. “You think some synthetic, lab-made scent could ever be worth you getting hurt?”
Your throat felt tight, and you looked away, only for Johnny to let out a rough, disbelieving laugh. “Jesus, lass. You think we’d ever want some artificial shite over you?”
You opened your mouth, but no words came. “I just thought… maybe it would make things easier.” You admitted eventually, voice small and weak, avoiding their eyes. You’d thought… it might even make your family care.
Gaz inhaled sharply, like your words had hurt. “Easier for who?”
The question left you hollow, because you knew the answer.
Not for them.
Never for them.
John sighed, rubbing his temples before reaching out, cupping your cheek with one calloused hand and forcing you to look at him. “Love,” he murmured, and his voice had softened now, rough edges worn down to something gentler, something aching. “We don’t need you to smell like us to know you’re ours. We don’t need a scent to claim you, or to carry your scent.” His thumb brushed against your cheek, touch warm. “You’re already part of this pack.”
The weight of his words settled deep in your chest, curling around your ribs, something painful and good all at once.
For so long, you had felt other. Like something was missing. But here, surrounded by them, their warmth pressing into you, their hands grounding you-
You could almost convince yourself you were whole.
Simon let out a slow breath and reached for you, pulling you into his lap with a kind of desperate, hungry care, his arms curling around you like he could somehow shield you from your own thoughts. Johnny pressed against your side, warm and solid, his grip firm where he held onto your wrist. Kyle leaned in, his forehead pressing against your shoulder, and Price wrapped an arm around all of you, anchoring you to them.
And you let yourself believe them.

⤷ chapter three — ivy
i could hate you now / it’s quite alright to hate me now / but we both know that deep down / the feeling still deep down is good
The knife makes a soft thunk against the cutting board as you slice through the last of the strawberries, bright red, juice bleeding out onto the wood. You scoop the pieces into a bowl with the others — kiwi, pineapple, blueberries, a few slices of watermelon. Colourful. Easy to share. Refreshing enough for the heat outside, you hope.
A headache throbs behind your temple. It’s been sitting there since you woke up, dull but insistent. Usually, you would've had a few painkillers in your purse for this exact situation, but you had been certain that you'd be fine on the trip.
You let out a soft sigh. If it weren’t for your own spectacular decision-making.
You tilt your head back gently, reaching up to rub your forehead with the back of your wrist, careful not to smear fruit juice across your skin. The cool tile under your bare feet helps. A little.
From the kitchen, you can just about make out the voices outside.
Laughter and chatter carries faintly. Someone shouts something you can't quite make out, and there's a burst of response.
You should be out there with them. You would be, on any other day. But you’re not risking it — not with your head pounding like this, like your brain is bruised beneath your skull. One hour under that sun, and you know you’ll spend the rest of the day curled up in the dark, miserable.
Well... at least, that’s the excuse you went with.
You haven’t talked to Jungkook since last night.
Not after you walked away, leaving him with nothing but the weight of his own words and the silence you wrapped yourself in.
'I figured… you’d be here.'
Like it was obvious. Like he still knew you. Like he hadn’t made the choice to not be part of your life anymore.
Last night, your anger had been sharp. You’d felt it in your jaw, your chest, your hands. But now, it’s dulled into something muddier.
You’d been telling yourself he’d moved on — that whatever the breakup had done to you, it hadn’t touched him the same way. That he was fine. Probably relieved. Probably already halfway into his next chapter, while you were still here, trying to rewrite your ending like it didn’t hurt. And maybe that assumption had made it easier. Easier to be mad. Easier to hate him a little.
But then last night… he said he came here for you. Like he missed you. Like you still mattered.
And that? That messed with things.
Because how are you supposed to stay angry at someone who walked away, then looked you in the eye like they never wanted to? How are you supposed to keep the space intact when he was the one reaching across it — gently, quietly, like he didn’t know he was doing it?
You’d built your resentment around the idea that he let go easily. That he wanted out more than he wanted you. But now, with the weight of his words still sitting heavy in your chest, the whole picture feels harder to hold. Blurrier.
Turns out, hate’s a lot easier when you think the other person never looked back. And you're clearly a weak link.
The sound of the sliding door pulls you out of your thoughts, and you don't have to look to know exactly who it is.
There’s a soft pad of bare feet on tile, a steady, unhurried rhythm you’ve heard a thousand times before. You keep your eyes on the bowl of fruit in front of you, pretending to rearrange a few pieces like it matters.
“Hey,” Jungkook says, his voice calm.
You don’t turn around. “Hey.”
There’s a pause, just long enough for you to feel it.
”You okay?”
“Yeah. I’m fine,” you answer, automatic. Then you exhale, conceding a little. “Just a headache.”
Out of the corner of your eye, you see him move closer. He’s wearing black swim shorts that cling slightly at the waist, water still darkening the edges. A loose white t-shirt hangs off his frame — a little translucent from where it’s stuck to his chest.
His hair’s damp, curls pushed back from his forehead like he ran his fingers through it and let it dry that way. He smells faintly like sunscreen and chlorine and the heat outside.
“Did you drink enough water?” he asks.
A laughing breath tumbles from your lips before you can stop yourself. You shake your head, mostly to yourself, and glance at him over your shoulder.
He raises an eyebrow, like he already knows why you're laughing.
“You say that every time,” you say.
“Because every time, it’s true,” he says, not missing a beat.
His tone is easy, but his eyes search your face like he’s still trying to make sure. You give him a look — not annoyed, just tired — and sip from the water bottle already in your hand.
“Yes,” you say. “I’ve had water. It’s probably nothing.”
Jungkook doesn’t respond right away. He just leans against the counter beside you, one hand bracing the edge. A droplet of water slides down the inside of his veiny forearm.
You pretend not to notice.
“You take anything for it?” he asks eventually.
You shake your head. “Didn’t bring any.”
He scoffs, low and amused. “Oh, so smart.”
You roll your eyes. “Thanks. Really helpful.”
He grins — not wide, not smug. Just soft around the edges. Familiar. The kind of grin he probably doesn’t realise he’s making.
He reaches into the drawer next to you without asking, pulling it open with a scrape of wood on wood. You glance sideways, eyebrows pulling together.
“What are you doing?”
“Checking if this place is stocked like a normal rental or if we’re screwed,” he says, sifting through half-empty tea boxes, a roll of foil, batteries, and a mostly dead flashlight. “And… yeah. Screwed.”
You exhale through your nose, more of a puff than a laugh. “Should’ve figured.”
“You know what you need?” he says, straightening up. “Cold compress. Or a wet towel.”
“I’m not that desperate.”
“You say that now,” he murmurs, stepping away and heading toward the sink. He grabs a dish towel from the rack, runs it under cool water, wrings it out with practiced ease.
He turns, holding it out to you — not pushing it into your hands, just waiting, giving you the option.
You hesitate.
You want to say no. You should. But your head throbs again, dull and pulsing behind your eyes, and maybe your pride’s not worth it right now.
You reach out, take it from him.
His fingers brush yours, just for a second. Your grip's not as steady as you’d like.
You fold the cloth once, press it to the side of your head, and close your eyes for a second. The coolness helps. Not enough, but it’s something.
When you open your eyes again, he’s still there, simply watching.
“What?” you ask.
He shakes his head, but there's a small smile on his face. "Nothing."
You narrow your eyes at him, but no further words leave your mouth.
He leans a little heavier into the counter, arms folded, eyes flicking over the kitchen like he’s killing time — like he knows you well enough to wait you out.
The kitchen settles into a soft hush, filled only by the faint hum of the fridge and the occasional burst of laughter from outside.
You keep your eyes forward, focused on nothing, the damp towel warming slowly in your hand. You can feel him looking — not staring, but thinking. Sitting on something.
He shifts his weight slightly, arms still folded across his chest. Then finally, he says, low and cautious, “Hey.”
You glance over, just barely. “Yeah?”
He hesitates, just long enough for you to brace yourself.
“About what I said last night.”
You blink, eyes flicking back to the counter.
Jungkook keeps going anyway. “I didn’t mean to… dump that on you, or say it like that. I wasn’t trying to make things harder. I just… I don’t know. I guess I didn’t think.”
You let the silence hang a moment, long enough for the words to settle.
“It’s fine,” you say eventually, quietly. “I’d already forgotten about it.”
He nods, lips pressing together. “Still. I’m sorry.”
You don’t answer this time. Just give a small shrug, like it’s not worth talking about.
Another hush washes over the kitchen, this one heavier.
You both sit in it for a moment, like neither of you knows exactly where to go next, but he shifts slightly and clears his throat.
A beat passes. You watch him out of the corner of your eye as he squints at the counter.
“So...” he says, dragging the word out just enough to be obvious. “Are you gonna tell me what’s in the bowl, or do I have to guess?”
The question is stupid. It’s clearly fruit. But it works. It’s light enough to crack the silence without pretending it wasn’t there.
You don’t say anything for a second. Just press the cloth a little firmer to your temple and exhale, slow.
“Fruit,” you say. "Strawberries, kiwi, watermelon, pineapple. Some other stuff."
Jungkook leans over to peek into the bowl, then reaches for the spoon. You slide it away before he can grab it.
He blinks at you, a beat of surprise. “Seriously?”
“I didn’t say you could have any.”
“Since when do I need permission?” he asks, brow raised.
You give him a flat look. “Since always. You just never listened.”
He grins like that’s not even close to a deterrent. “C’mon. I kept you from passing out on the kitchen floor. That’s at least worth a bite.”
You shift the spoon just slightly further out of reach, not smiling — not fully — but your mouth twitches like it’s thinking about it. “One bite.”
“I’m starving.”
“Should’ve thought of that before cannonballing off the deep end for an hour.”
He steps closer — not too close — but enough to peer over your shoulder again, dramatic and exaggerated. “You’re telling me I generously helped your migraine and you’re gonna gatekeep the fruit bowl?”
You roll your eyes. “Fine,” you mutter, sliding the spoon toward him with one finger. “You can have some. As long as you take the rest out to the others.”
He grabs the spoon like it’s a prize, already scooping a chunk of watermelon into his mouth. “Deal,” he says around it.
He chews slowly, gaze still fixed on the bowl, like he’s giving the fruit his full concentration.
Then he nods once, eyebrows furrowed. “It’s good.”
You say nothing, just shift the towel slightly against your temple, adjusting it where it’s starting to lose its chill.
He takes another bite — slower this time, as if he’s savouring the taste.
You glance over at him, just briefly. The light from the sliding door paints a soft sheen across his skin, catches in the damp ends of his hair. His profile is calm, unreadable. You know that look. He’s thinking about something he won’t say.
“You gonna take that out?” you ask eventually, nodding at the bowl.
He looks up like he forgot it was in his hands. “Yeah. Right.”
Jungkook lingers for a second longer than necessary, still holding the spoon. Then, finally, he turns toward the door.
Just before he slides it open, he pauses, glancing back over his shoulder.
“If you still feel bad later… I can run into town, grab something.”
"I can take care of myself, Jungkook.”
"I— right. I didn't mean it like that." He lets out a sigh. "Just don't die, yeah?"
You nod, and the door slides open again, letting in a gust of sun and the very distant echo of your friends yelling over music.
You let out a slow breath and rest both elbows on the counter, head still heavy.
And even though the ache behind your eyes is still there — stubborn and dull — it’s softened now. Just a little.
Your headache is mostly gone.
Not completely — there’s still a faint buzz behind your right eye — but it’s somewhat bearable now. The dull kind of pressure you can forget about if you keep still and breathe slow.
What really helped, you think, was the nap. A quiet hour stretched out on the couch with the curtains drawn halfway closed and the cold cloth still folded gently against your forehead.
You don’t remember falling asleep. One minute, you were lying there, your arm slung over your eyes to block the light, and the next, you were waking up to the distant sound of laughter outside, the ache in your head a few degrees cooler.
The towel was still cold when you stirred. Not freezing, but fresher than it had any right to be after an hour against your skin.
You hadn’t put it back in the freezer.
You’re almost sure you didn’t move at all.
Which means… someone had to have changed it amidst your slumber.
You’re not sure how you feel about it. If it even happened. If it means anything.
It shouldn’t. You tell yourself that. It shouldn’t mean anything.
But something about it sticks in your chest.
You’d asked for space — not out loud, not exactly, but in all the ways that mattered. In how you walked away, in how you haven’t reached for him since. And yet… here you are. Picking apart the temperature of a towel like it holds any real weight.
You’re trying not to read into things.
Really, you are.
But it’s hard when the lines keep blurring.
Pretending in front of the others is one thing. A mutual act, a lie with rules and boundaries. But the quiet moments are harder — the ones where no one is looking. Those feel like the truth, leaking out in small, inconvenient ways.
And now here you are.
The beach is stretched out before you in all its sleepy, golden haze. You’ve only been out here for ten minutes; just long enough to settle on your towel and feel the sun warm the backs of your legs.
When you stepped out of the house, the last serve of a makeshift volleyball game had just hit the sand. Taehyung and Hoseok stood dramatically with their arms raised like they'd won the Olympics, while Jimin fell to his knees with an exaggerated groan, sand puffing up beneath him. Seokjin declared the whole thing rigged.
Now, the energy has dipped.
Yoongi is passed out with a bucket hat covering his face. Seokjin’s sitting near the cooler, sipping something canned and cold with his arm lazily slung around Haeun’s waist. Everyone else lies scattered across the sand
The air smells like sunscreen and salt. The ocean hums steady in the background, lapping up against the shore.
And beside it all — Jungkook is somewhere behind you.
You haven’t looked directly at him since you laid your towel down, but you can almost feel his presence.
You shift on your stomach, resting your cheek against your folded arms as you watch Ari walk toward the water, her ankles sinking into the wet sand with each step. The back of your neck is starting to warm. A little too much.
“You're gonna get sunburnt,” comes Jungkook’s voice, low and close behind you.
You don’t lift your head. Just let out a small noise, somewhere between a sigh and a groan.
“I’m fine.”
“You’re not,” he replies, not unkindly. “Do you really wanna deal with a migraine and a sun burn at the same time?”
You squint forward, not at anything in particular. The sun is still high, still hot. That tell tale sting is starting to spread across your shoulders, the heat clawing at your skin.
But still, you don’t move.
“I’m too comfortable,” you mumble into your arms.
Behind you, there’s a pause. A quiet snort. The soft click of a bottle opening.
“Then don’t move,” Jungkook says. “I’ve got it.”
You could say no. Could roll away, wave him off, insist on doing it yourself. But you don’t. Whether it’s the heat, the sleep still clinging to your limbs, or just the fact that resisting feels like more effort than it’s worth — you stay where you are.
You hear him kneel beside you in the sand, shifting his weight until his shadow falls across your back.
A second later, the first touch of sunscreen lands cool and smooth on your skin, right between your shoulder blades. His hands follow, spreading it across your back with steady, practiced pressure.
You tense at first, your body instinctively stiffening beneath the weight of his palms. But it’s not like you don’t know how he touches. You do. That knowledge is in your bones, no matter how much time has passed.
He’s methodical about it. No lingering, no hesitation — just slow, firm strokes. Across your shoulders. Down the curve of your spine. It doesn't feel like anything more than it is. It shouldn't.
Still, you keep your face turned away, your sunglasses hiding the part of you that can’t stop reading into this.
He’s just doing it to show the others.
His hand drags slightly higher, toward the back of your neck — just above where your bikini strap cuts across your skin — and slows.
His fingers brush lightly over the spot where your tattoo is inked into your skin: small, fine-lined, nothing dramatic. Just a single, understated flower.
His birth flower. A small tiger lily.
He’s quiet for a beat. Long enough that you notice.
It was years ago. You’d gotten them together after a night out with the group — a bit drunk and feeling impulsive. You’d been walking past a tiny tattoo studio near campus while on the way home, a place you’d both seen a hundred times but never gone into. And for some reason that night, you did.
It was an idea that made sense at the time.
He has your birth flower on the back of his neck too, low enough to hide beneath the collar of a hoodie. Yours a mirror of his, but a small bit higher.
You never talked about what they meant. Not out loud. They weren’t anything too special. Just... markers of time. Of who you were to each other then.
And now here he is, brushing sunscreen over it like he’s trying not to think about the fact that it’s still there.
You feel his fingers hesitate — just for a second — right over the ink. His thumb grazes the edge of it, subtle enough that you almost miss it. But you don’t. You feel everything.
Then he clears his throat softly and moves on, his hands smoothing down the rest of your back with the same quiet efficiency as before. Like nothing happened. Like it didn’t matter.
And maybe it doesn’t.
But the tension in your jaw says otherwise.
By the time he’s finished, your skin feels slick and protected, the burn averted. But something else lingers — not on your back, but under your ribs. Low and restless.
"Thanks," you mumble.
He lets out a small hum in response, his hand resting lightly on your shoulder. For a second, you think he's going to say something, but instead, he scoots over to his own towel placed a few feet away from yours.
Minutes slip by in a blur of warmth and white noise.
You stay there, cheek pressed against the crook of your arm, letting the sun soak into your back. The sounds around you start to flatten — laughter, crashing waves, the thump of footsteps on sand — all melting together into something distant and slow. You’re not sure how long you lie there, half-awake, thoughts drifting somewhere between now and then, between what was and what isn’t anymore.
You don’t notice the shape that settles beside you until it casts a shadow across your towel.
“Wow,” Kiara says, dropping onto the sand with a dramatic exhale, “you’ve been so boring today.”
You lift your head slightly, squinting at her through your sunglasses. “Rude.”
“I’m serious,” she says, unbothered, propping herself up on her elbows. “You’re usually all over the place. But today?” She sighs. “Nothing. It’s been tragic.”
You snort, the sound muffled by your arm. “Sorry to disappoint.”
“I’m just saying,” she says, nudging your leg lightly with hers. “You’re throwing off the group dynamic."
You laugh for real this time — small, but genuine — and lift yourself slightly off your towel. Your head feels better, the pressure dulled to a faint hum. Manageable.
"You are good though, right?"
“I’m fine,” you say, rubbing at your temple with the back of your hand. “Just needed a break.”
“Well,” she drawls, sitting upright, “if you’re feeling human again, please tell me you’ll play one more round of volleyball.”
You blink. “Volleyball?”
“Yes,” she says, as if it’s obvious. “We need even teams, and I’m tired of getting stuck with Taehyung. He's genuinely a lost cause.”
You hesitate, and she watches you closely. Then, with a tilt of her head, she adds, “If you're feeling well, that is. Jungkook said that you had a headache earlier. He told all of us to keep it down when he saw you walking out, so I figured you were dying or something.”
“Oh,” you say, voice a little thinner than you’d like. “Right.” You force a breath through your nose. “I’m okay now. The nap helped.”
“Good,” she grins, bright and unbothered. “Because I refuse to lose to Jimin and this asshole again." She glances over at Jungkook with narrowed eyes, and you hear him chuckle. "My dignity can’t handle it," she adds, voice dropping a tiny bit.
You laugh and push yourself upright, brushing sand from your arms. “Fine. But Kiara, if someone spikes the ball at my face, you'll be the one that ends up dead.”
She beams, grabbing your hand and pulling you up to your feet. “No promises, but sure.”
She lets go of your hand as soon as you’re steady, then turns and jogs toward Hoseok to try and convince him to play too.
You dust off your legs with a sigh, flexing your toes in the warm sand. The heat radiates up through your soles, grounding. The sun is relentless now, painting everything in gold and glare.
You glance sideways toward the towel a few feet away.
Jungkook is still there, stretched out on his back with one arm slung across his forehead, shielding his eyes from the sun. From here, he looks peaceful. Like the ocean and the warmth and the quiet are all he needs.
You hesitate, then step closer.
“You playing?” you ask, voice light, careful.
Jungkook peeks one eye open, blinking up at you. “Nah,” he says, dragging the word out. “Too tired.”
You pause. Your first instinct is to roll your eyes. Maybe push. Maybe say something along the lines of 'Scared I'll beat you?'
But you don’t.
You open your mouth, but the words dry up before they form. Instead, you just give him a simple, “Alright.”
You turn toward the lazy line drawn into the sand (their version of a volleyball net), pretending you don’t hear the voice in your head asking why you even bothered in the first place.
It's not like you care.
You’re sitting on the edge of the pool, ankles skimming the surface, the pads of your feet just brushing cool water. There’s a half-empty glass of something fruity beside you on the tile. Hoseok’s cracking up mid-story, animated like always, throwing his arms out as he re-enacts some tragic college memory that has you clutching your stomach with laughter.
You’re glowing. Not in the cliché way — not some poetic, golden-hour kind of glow — but in that real, visceral way you used to around him. Like the air is lighter in your lungs when you’re surrounded by the people who get you. Like joy just leaks out of you without asking for permission.
And Jungkook?
He sits beside you. A little too close. Not close enough.
His legs are in the water too, knees bent, toes flexing every now and then as Namjoon speaks beside him, something low and thoughtful and typical of Namjoon — philosophy or music or that book he never shuts up about. Jungkook nods, murmurs something back, throws a quiet smile when Namjoon teases him for zoning out, but his attention never really leaves you.
You.
Laughing like you used to, shoulders shaking, head thrown back.
You reach out mid-laugh, fingers curling instinctively around Hoseok’s arm as you recover, and Jungkook’s heart does this pathetic little stutter in his chest. It shouldn’t matter. He knows that. Hoseok is family — your friend, his friend, everyone’s friend — and nothing more. But it’s the way you touch. So easy. So natural. So unguarded.
Like the version of you that still belongs to everyone else hasn’t changed.
The version of you he gets, though?
Guarded. Quiet. Careful.
And he deserves it. He knows that.
But still, it hurts.
It’s stupid, really. How he sits here, nodding along to a conversation he’s not even hearing, all while tracking your every laugh like it’s the air he breathes; like he’s parched and it’s the only thing that could quench it.
He doesn’t mean to do it. He tries to stop. But it’s been a month — just a month — and already he’s forgotten how to breathe in a world where your joy doesn’t belong to him.
Your fingers swipe at your eyes, wiping away tears from the laughter, and Jungkook can’t help but notice how your guard drops when you’re surrounded by them. How you’ve drawn a clear line around him, and only him.
You talk to everyone but him with that voice. The one that dances. The one he used to fall asleep to on long nights when sleep wouldn’t come unless your words wrapped around the edges of his mind first.
Now?
You barely look at him unless you have to.
Even now, you’re angled slightly away. Just enough to remind him that he lost access to something no one else even realises is sacred.
And he let it happen.
He chose this. And fuck, does he regret it.
It’s a strange kind of punishment — being near you like this. Close enough to hear your laughter, to count the freckles on your shoulders, to smell the sunscreen on your skin — and still feel completely shut out. He’s sitting in the middle of everything, surrounded by friends, summer heat, fading sun — and yet all he can think about is how badly he wants to reach for you, and how he can’t.
A splash breaks Jungkook out of his thoughts, followed by a sharp, familiar voice.
“Jimin, seriously, if you drop that in—”
“I’m not gonna drop it!”
He twists just slightly enough to see Jimin in the pool, chest deep, both arms stretched upward to keep Yasmine’s baby pink digital camera above the water. The strap is wrapped twice around his wrist, but he still moves like the thing’s made of glass, carefully navigating the shallow end of the pool.
He’s grinning, eyes curled into crescent moons behind the camera as he wades closer.
“Smile!” he shouts, voice echoing a little off the tile.
Jungkook barely has enough time to throw up a casual peace sign before the shutter snaps.
Jimin squints at the screen, adjusting the angle slightly before lifting the camera again.
“One more! The lighting’s really good right now.”
The sky is washed in that honey-orange haze that only happens for a few precious minutes before dusk. The pool reflects it all — golden ripples catching light, soft shadows stretching across the deck.
You sit still beside Jungkook, your laughter cooling into a smile. Your hand brushes your hair back absently, and it takes everything in him not to follow the movement.
Jimin lowers the camera again, brows lifting. “Wait, I wanna get one of just you two."
You hesitate, eyes flicking toward Jungkook for the briefest second. He meets your gaze and he can see the hesitance swimming in your mind.
But before he can open his mouth to tell Jimin that the picture isn't needed, you adjust your legs, turning slightly so your shoulder brushes his.
It’s not much. But it’s not nothing.
Jungkook lifts an arm, pausing for half a second, then lets his hand settle at your waist, fingers just grazing the curve of your side.
You lean into his touch, your shoulder slipping under his arm, your hand moving to rest on his knee, and Jungkook's heart trips. No warning, no rhythm. It just skips — sharp and stupid and immediate.
Because this feels familiar. And fuck, he’s missed this.
“Okay,” Jimin calls. “Say cheese!”
You smile.
Click.
He turns his head ever so slightly to sneak a glance at you, and his breath catches.
Your smile isn’t fake. Not forced. Not the stiff, polite kind you’ve been tossing his way when the group’s looking. It’s real — soft and bright, with your eyes crinkling at the corners and your nose doing that little scrunch it always does when you’re genuinely happy. Your eyelashes catch the light, casting faint shadows on your cheeks.
Click.
The sound barely fades before something reckless flickers in Jungkook.
His hand tightens slightly at your waist, like he’s grounding himself, or maybe trying to stop himself from doing exactly what he’s about to do. He knows he shouldn’t. He’s not entitled to moments like this anymore.
But God, you’re right there. Glowing. Laughing like you used to. And it’s killing him.
He watches the way your lips part slightly after your smile, the way your eyes dart to the camera and then away again. You look happy — not with him, but still. And it’s that exact version of you he aches for. The one that used to look at him like that on purpose.
He should look away.
He should remember that you're not his anymore. That whatever you're doing right now — playing pretend, leaning into the role for the sake of everyone else — isn’t real.
He tells himself not to do it.
Tells himself to breathe. To sit still. To just let this moment exist without taking anything from it.
But he doesn’t listen.
He never could, when it comes to you.
So before he can think twice — before reason has a chance to claw its way back in — he leans in, slow and quiet and aching.
And presses a kiss to your cheek.
It’s soft. A touch more than a breath, less than a second.
His lips barely linger, but it’s enough. Enough to remember. Enough to want
Click.
To his surprise, you don’t flinch or pull away.
You just… sit there. Letting it happen.
Jimin chirps something about the photo, already moving on, flipping the camera around to show Taehyung and Yasmine as they ask him to take a similar picture of them too.
But Jungkook barely hears them.
He can’t hear much over the pounding in his chest, anyway. Can’t think beyond the feel of your skin under his lips, the way your shoulder fit under his arm like it still belongs there. Like nothing’s changed.
Maybe that’s why his voice comes out quieter than he means it to.
“Sorry,” he murmurs, eyes fixed straight ahead. “Habit.”
You don’t look at him. But you don’t move away either. Your hand stays on his knee, almost as if you know that the second either of you move, the moment is over.
The air goes still between you. And for the first time all day, Jungkook lets himself breathe.
Not fully. Not the kind of breath that fills your lungs and clears your head. But something. Something real enough that it almost feels like hope.
Then you shift.
Just slightly.
Your hand slides off his knee, fingers brushing the fabric of his shorts as you pull away.
You stand up slowly, brushing the back of your hand across your cheek where he kissed you, like you’re wiping away sweat — or maybe just trying to reset the moment.
You don’t say anything. Just pick up your drink, half-finished and watered down by melted ice, and move toward Haeun and Ari near the deep end who welcome you with a small wave of their fingers.
Jungkook watches you go.
He should feel stupid. Regretful. Humiliated, even. But he doesn’t. Not really.
Because for one second — just one — you didn’t pull away.
You let him exist beside you. With you. Like maybe some part of you remembered, too.
And maybe that means nothing.
Maybe it was just muscle memory.
But maybe — maybe — there’s still something left to hold onto.
Even if it hurts.
Even if it’s only for one more week.
Even if all he gets now are seconds.
And he’ll take them.
Because when it comes to you, he always would.

Can you write a floyd x touch starved reader because their family on earth isn't all that affectionate?
Squeeze First, Act Later

𝖆/𝖓: starting to post fics with no header because it keeps tweaking out TUMBLR WHY IT WAS WORKING FINE BEFORE and WOAH TWO IN ONE DAY?!

𝖕𝖆𝖎𝖗𝖎𝖓𝖌: floyd x touch starved!reader

Floyd Leech wasn’t exactly subtle about his affections. If he liked you, you knew it. If he really liked you, you were getting lifted, squished, teased, and dragged around like a personal toy. For most people, it was a lot.
But for you?
It was everything.
Because back home—on Earth—hugs were rare. Your family wasn’t bad, exactly. Just... cold. Distant. Not the kind to ruffle your hair or pull you into a sleepy cuddle on the couch. Not the kind to hold your hand when you were sad or lean against you just because.
And here was Floyd, invading your space from day one like he’d always belonged there.
At first, it overwhelmed you. All the sudden touch—arms slung around shoulders, hands tugging at your clothes, fingers flicking your forehead. But instead of shrinking away, you found yourself... craving it.
Needing it.
Even when he was teasing you, it felt like warmth in your chest. Like something had been frozen for a long time and was finally starting to thaw.

One lazy afternoon in Octavinelle, you sat on the couch in the lounge, head tilted back, eyes closed. Floyd plopped down beside you with zero warning, sprawling dramatically across your lap.
“Eeeeeh? You look all gloomy again,” he drawled, staring up at you upside-down. “You gonna cry or something?”
You blinked down at him. “No, just tired.”
He didn’t move. If anything, he melted further into you, head resting heavy against your thigh. One hand lazily reached up, fingers toying with yours.
You stiffened slightly at first—then let him. The casual intimacy made your heart squeeze, but you didn’t pull away.
Floyd’s sharp gaze flicked up to your face. “You always get all stiff when I touch you,” he said, tone unusually serious. “But you never stop me. Weird, huh?”
You swallowed, not meeting his eyes. “I’m not used to it.”
“Huh?” He propped himself up on one elbow. “Used to what?”
“…Being touched. My family wasn’t really... affectionate.”
Floyd stared at you. Not laughing. Not smirking. Just watching.
“Like, no hugs and stuff?” he asked after a pause.
You nodded.
“…That suuucks,” he finally muttered, as if personally offended. “No wonder you always look all surprised when I hug you. You’re like—‘whoa! what’s this??’” He mimicked your expression, then flopped back down dramatically.
You huffed a laugh.
He was quiet for a moment. Then—
“Hey, shrimpy.”
“Yeah?”
“Wanna try it?”
“…Try what?”
“Hugs. All the time. No reason. Just ‘cause.”
Your breath caught. Slowly, you nodded.
Floyd sat up, wrapped his long arms around you, and pulled you into a tight squeeze. His chin rested on your shoulder, hair tickling your cheek.
“Like this?” he murmured.
You couldn’t speak. You just buried your face in his chest, fingers gripping the back of his jacket like you were afraid he’d disappear.
Floyd didn’t say anything else. He didn’t need to.
From that day on, you never had to ask for affection. He gave it freely, generously, with all the intensity that was so him. And every touch, every nudge, every sudden arm slung over your shoulders, felt like rewriting a part of you that had gone too long without love.

It started with the small things.
Floyd wasn’t any less chaotic—he still skipped class, still dragged freshmen around by the collar, still threatened to squeeze anyone who annoyed him.
But there was a softness now. A strange, quiet shift that only those who knew him best could spot.
Azul noticed it first.
“Floyd,” he said one afternoon, eyeing the scene before him with a furrowed brow. “Why are you… braiding their hair?”
Floyd glanced up, lazily twisting another lock of your hair between his fingers.
“‘Cause I wanna, duh,” he grinned. “Shrimpy said no one ever played with their hair before. So I’m makin’ up for lost time.”
Azul stared. You were seated on the floor between Floyd’s knees, shoulders relaxed and eyes half-lidded in contentment. If Azul didn’t know better, he’d have said you were about to fall asleep right there in Floyd’s lap.
That was new.
“…I see,” Azul said, adjusting his glasses. “Just don’t skip your shift again. We have guests at seven.”
“Uh-huh,” Floyd hummed, clearly not listening. He patted your head twice—gently, as if memorizing the shape of it. “Shrimpy first, work later.”
Azul opened his mouth to protest, then stopped. There was no menace in Floyd’s voice. No biting sarcasm. Just something warm and unfamiliar.
Jade, meanwhile, had been watching this change with quiet fascination.

Later that night, while Azul reviewed the lounge’s earnings and Floyd dozed off with his head on your shoulder in the back booth, Jade leaned over and said softly, “I think he’s happier.”
Azul glanced over the rim of his teacup. “Hm?”
“Floyd,” Jade said, smiling faintly. “He’s been more even-tempered. He hasn’t threatened to sink anyone in days.”
“That’s… unsettling.”
“And he lets them hold his hand.”
Azul choked slightly on his tea.
Floyd Leech, who bit people for touching him wrong, letting someone hold his hand?
“You think they’re—?” Azul asked, eyes narrowing.
“In some way,” Jade mused. “Floyd doesn’t do anything halfway.”
Azul’s gaze drifted back toward the two of you. Your hand was loosely linked with Floyd’s, his fingers curled around yours even in sleep. You looked peaceful.
And Floyd, for once, didn’t look like a live wire about to snap.
Azul exhaled. “If this makes him easier to work with, I won’t complain.”
Jade chuckled, eyes gleaming. “Oh, I wouldn’t say easier. But definitely more tender.”

Later, as you gently brushed Floyd’s bangs from his face, you murmured, “You okay with them watching us like that?”
“Mhm,” Floyd mumbled without opening his eyes. “Lemme show off. I like bein’ yours.”
You smiled. “I like being yours too.”
He cracked one eye open, grin sharp but affectionate.
“Then I’m gonna keep touchin’ you until you never feel lonely again.”
And true to his word—he did.

how do you think the cod men would react to you hiding an injury (from a mission) from them?
(annoyed i had a draft of this ready but my laptop decided to act up and i lost it, so i had to rewrite it again)
𓆩♡𓆪 Headcanon: Hiding An Injury From Them

ઇଓ Price, Ghost, Soap, Gaz, Roach, Alejandro, Rudy, Phillip Graves, Makarov, Keegan, König, Horangi, Nikto
Price
it wasn't until after the mission that he noticed you clutching your side, your hand curved protectively over the wound that was surely getting worse by the minute or so he feared
he insisted on taking you to the medic right away, and as you were being examined he stayed right outside the room, he really wished you had told him, he was captain so he had to know if one of his had been injured
you were left to rest but the next day he came back, when you awoke he was there by your bedside, "why didn't you tell me?"
he just wants you to know that you need to trust him, he's more worried than anything on why you didn't come to him, did you not trust him?
Ghost
while you were seeking shelter he noticed the way you limped, you hadn't said anything but anyone who looked at you could see how terribly you tried to hide your pain
he sighs and trudges towards you, as if annoyed he has to do this, but he takes you aside and has you show him the injury, it wasn't as bad as he thought it was which is why he's a little relieved
as he bandages you up he's mostly silent, he wanted to scold you, to say something to get this feeling off his chest but when you gasp in pain when his fingers apply too much pressure he can't bring himself to be annoyed at you
you're left feeling the phantom touch of his fingers and how he gentled when he saw you wince in pain
Soap
you two were almost always assigned together or ended up finding one another and watching each other's back, so you were always in his subconscious; he just couldn't let anything happen to you
yet, in the blink of an eye it had happened, you brushed it off as being just fine, that it was only the debris and nothing more, nothing vital had been hit
but when you went back to base and he didn't see you around for a couple of days and found out you had been sent to recovery he rushed to find you, "you told me you were fine!", and he's upset you weren't honest when he asked
you two were a team...always working together so he definitely gets cross about the matter for a little while afterwards but not for long because he's still checking up and asking how you're holding up
Gaz
when you were a rookie you went to him for almost everything, he was the one you felt safest with and he had treated you with the most respect even if you were still learning and made mistakes
so he couldn't help but feel forgotten or sidelined when you didn't tell him about your injury, in fact, you weren't planning on telling anyone because you didn't want to make a 'big deal' out of it, you had been doing so well and you didn't want anyone to know you had messed up
yet, he found you taking painkillers and stuffing rags of blood down to the bottom of the trashcan, "how long have you been covering this?!" as he rushed to take care of it for you
he was stunned to find out you had been trying to take care of it yourself, still he remained patient as he somewhat understand why you did it
Roach
he went into panic thinking something worse would happen if you didn't tell someone right away, but you tried to tell him it wasn't that bad as a knife was sticking out of your leg
neither of you knew what to do other than informing someone, as help was on the way he shushed you and was 'calming' you down when you weren't even showing distress
he loves being helpful when he can so he stuck around to see if there was anything you needed whether that be emotional support or medicine; he was ready to help
Alejandro
he'd mutter a few curses before ordering some soldiers around to get an emergency kit, you try to move into a more comfortable position but he scolds you to hold it, you're making it worse
"this is serious you idiot, stuff like this can't be held off until later" and he might go off into a long rant but really he's trying to distract his mind as he cleans your wound and wraps it
he implements a new rule; everyone must report what they're doing or what has happened to them at all times during a mission, doesn't matter if they're taking a dump or if they got a papercut they gotta report that too
really he's just worried you'll get hurt and he won't be there in time to aid you
Rudy
he's all over you, anxious and troubled that one, you were injured and second, you were intentionally hiding it from him! he's more disappointed than anything
"i'm so sorry, you'll be fine.. i promise" he comforts as you're being patched up and treated, it probably hurt him more than you but you swear he's being a little over the top
back at base, there is not a day that goes by without him coming by to see you and bringing something for you, he doesn't even get mad at you for trying to hide the injury from him, he most likely forgot
Phillip Graves
"no, no- fuck, why?!" he focused in on solely you when a soldier told him about the injury you were trying to hide, but he cares too much, and you've seen how he is with his Shadows, of course he wouldn't let something like this slip by him
doesn't matter if you can walk yourself but you're not doing anything without assistance anymore until you're completely healed, it's sort of heartwarming in a way
he makes it very clear that this doesn't happen again, and you think he's talking about the injury but no he's referring to you hiding that you're hurt, he doesn't mind offering help he just doesn't want you suffering in silence
Makarov
he can't help but feel guilty, he should've known the risk for sending you out there and now the result is you needing emergency care, thankfully you weren't in too much pain
still, to him this is very serious, "this is serious! tell me what happened, who did it?", he's ready to go out there and find the bastard who had the audacity to do this, but you tell him it was kind of your own fault because everything had gone well it was actually due to your clumsiness that you had stumbled and hurt yourself on the way back
he doesn't know if that's another lie but since you seem better now he'll take it
Keegan
you've seen how much he yells during missions, so you know you're in for a reprimand the moment he figures out you're hurt, it's just a matter of time until he notices
strangely, when he does notice the blood through your clothes his eyes only widen as he points out the stained cloth and then gets to work silently as he uncovers the wound
you nervously try to tell him it's not that bad and he shouldn't be fussing over it but he just rolls his eyes, "not that bad you say? are you even looking at it?"
yeah it was pretty bad
König
he gets nervous the moment you show the slightest sign of discomfort so it's no strange that you'd hide an injury he's surely freak out over, you just don't want to cause him to lose focus
little do you know, the other soldiers are his eyes and ears as they report to him your injuries, he comes and says it's best you go back to base a little earlier, you protest thinking it's not fair that the others have sustained worse injuries yet they still have to keep going forward with the mission
but he just wants to prevent you from getting hurt worse and being so far away from a medic who could treat you end up with terrible health complications
Horangi
you and him tended to play around during missions, as if not taking them seriously, until it resulted in you getting hurt, he went serious after that even though to tried brushing it off
he could see you tense up a bit, your body sensitive to the throbbing pain that was begging to be taken care of, you needed rest and you weren't going to give it what it needed, he really wished he could be more caring and nurturing in this moment
he can only tell you to breathe slowly, to focus on the stars above you right now and hope you got to a medic soon, he wants you to realize you're not fine and that this could have been prevented, if only he had been more on guard
Nikto
he's seen people get their arm blown off, maybe even lose a leg and he barely bats an eye at it, so why is he constantly looking over at you who seems to be suppressing pain?
to him if blood isn't noticeable then it's no reason for alarm, and even then a little blood never hurt anyone, but your throbbing pain only gets stronger and he can see it in your eyes, the desperation and how you wish you had painkillers right now
while everyone else is asleep he orders you to tell him what's hurting and he tries his best to take care of it, he's built a high pain tolerance over the years but will feel disquieted when you appear worn out

“c’mon, sarah. please?” you whined.
“babe, you’ve already had way too much to drink,” she said with a chuckle.
you began to pout. “but rafe never lets me drink and we haven’t all been together in sooo long,” you dragged. “this is like—like the one night we can have fun. so why not enjoy it.”
“you’re enjoyin’ it alright,” jj joked, taking another sip from his beer.
that gave you an idea. jj always drank with you.
you turned to him with a smile and the two full shot glasses. “jj?”
he could never turn down alcohol. “why not?”
you cheered and handed him one of the shots before counting down, connecting your lips with the glass and leaning your head back as the burn slid down your throat.
the two of you high fived each other before starting to pour yourselves another.
“you think we’ll have to call him tonight?” john b asked, standing with pope, sarah, and kiara as they watched the two take more shots.
sarah nodded. “definitely. she’s not walking in this state.”
“he’s gonna be pissed,” pope said.
“so pissed,” kiara agreed.
sarah sighed and shifted her weight to one foot. “who’s gonna do it this time?”
john b and pope put their fingers on their noses quickly. once kie noticed, she did the same.
“not fair,” the blonde said. “i don’t wanna text him.”
kiara laughed. “he’s your brother. if he hears it from us, he’d probably run us all over on the way here.”
she sighed but pulled out her phone and began to search for his contact to call him instead while you and jj were still drunkenly stumbling around each other, laughing uncontrollably, dancing to the music and taking another shot.
“what do you want?” he asked, voice louder now that he was on speaker.
sarah rolled her eyes. “can you come get y/n? we’ve all been drinking, some more than others, and i don’t think its a good idea for us to drive her home.”
“what the fuck, sarah? i told you about this shit already. stop—“
she hung up before he could get another word out. john b reached into the cooler and grabbed out some beers, handing one to each of the three. “we’re gonna need ‘em for this one.”
“it’s like a ticking time bomb,” kie said. “we’re basically sitting ducks right here.”
sarah shook her head. “he won’t do anything too bad. you know she doesn’t like when he gets all mouthy with us,” she replied, referring to you.
and in record breaking time, the big truck was pulling into the dead patch of grass on the side of the chateau.
you gasped when you saw your boyfriend approaching and immediately run up to him, without stumbling and tripping as much as you can, flinging your arms around him and holding yourself close to him. “hi, rafe,” you slurred against his chest.
“hi, baby,” he said softly. your balance was completely off. he wrapped his arms around you to ensure you wouldn’t fall then looked up to his sister and the rest of the pogues. “are you kidding me?”
sarah shrugged. “she was having fun, rafe. let her.”
“what did i tell you about this? look at her. she can barely even stand,” he spat angrily. “i told you to watch her. and you didn’t. you’re supposed to monitor how much she’s drinking so she doesn’t—“
“hey,” you mumbled quietly, leaning off his chest and stumbling back slightly to look at him. “‘s fine. ‘m fine. i was jus’ havin’ fun with my friends and—and i had a little too much. sarah even—even told me i was drinking too much. ‘s fine though. can we jus’ go home?” you slurred between hiccups.
he took a deep breath. he could never say no to you.
“c’mon,” he said softly. you waved goodbye to all your friends and with a hand on your back to keep you steady, he led you to the car. his hands found your waist to help you up into your seat, strapping you in then shutting the door and hastily walked around to the other side.
you giggled when he got in. “i had sooo much fun today, rafe.”
he smiled to himself and began to reverse out. “i can’t wait to hear all about it, sweetheart.”

"Sort" - Jegulus microfic (Trans!Reggie) @into-the-jeggyverse - 533 words
-
Sometimes, Regulus’s anger incapacitated him. He could not breathe, could not think. The rage overcame him, made him want to cry or scream or hit something. It was indescribable, ineffable, there were no words for the way it made him feel. This was one of those times.
Regulus had been working on his essay for a week. Normally, he could have written it in two hours. But there was far too much going on, everything seemed louder than usual, and he felt as though his brain was working so, so slowly. So, after working on this essay for a week, he felt a small, relieved sense of triumph to finally have it completed. This feeling was not long-lived, however, as Sirius came bounding over, James in tow, and accidentally knocked over Regulus’s inkwell, causing it to spill all over his essay. Regulus was not sure whether to cry, scream, or murder Sirius. Correction, he was sure he would do all three, he simply did not know in which order to do them.
“Shit, Reg, sorry,” Sirius apologised with a sheepish grin.
James, seemingly sensing Regulus’s homicidal fantasies, moved between the brothers and grabbed Regulus’s hand and the essay, moving them far away from Sirius and into his dorm.
“I’ve been working on that for a week,” Regulus shouted as he was being pulled away. At first, it was filled with anger, but the moment he and James were behind closed doors, Regulus collapsed into him, tears spilling as he mumbled, “I’ve been writing that for a week.”
James put the ink-soaked essay down on his bed-side table and sat on the edge of his bed, pulling Regulus into his lap. “I’ve got you, angel,” he said softly.
“It took me a whole fucking week to write an essay,” Regulus whispered, voice filled with anguish. “I’m going to fucking kill Sirius.”
At first, the anger was all directed at his brother. Regulus wanted to do unspeakable things to him, wanted to tear him apart. Then, he just felt hatred. Towards himself, more than anyone else. Regulus had never taken so long to complete an assignment. He felt so useless.
“We’ll sort it out, love,” James assured. “It’ll be okay. We can rewrite it.”
“I have to hand it in tomorrow,” Regulus mumbled, wanting, more than anything, to cuddle up to his boyfriend and sleep, maybe for the rest of eternity.
“Then I’ll write it for you. Won’t be as good as your one, but at least you’ll have something.” James’s hand moved under Regulus’s shirt and stroked his back comfortingly.
They ended up under the covers, Regulus’s head buried in James’s shoulder, as though trying to hide from the world, trying to hide this from James. Regulus winced and gripped James’s shirt tightly.
“What’s wrong?” James asked, because of course he had to notice, and of course he had to care.
“‘M on my period,” Regulus murmured, disdain heavy in his voice.
James didn’t say anything else, but kissed Regulus’s head and pulled him closer, promising that it would all work out fine. If it had been anyone else, Regulus would not have believed a word. But it was James, and it was enough.

LOSS OF MY LIFE
formula one x horror actor!reader
request: I'm hoping this is thw right way to ask for requests but we live and learn ig. Anyway what about how the drivers would react to reader being in some sort of horror film and they end up dying?
summary: your boyfriend reacts to your death in a movie.
warnings: mild descriptions of death and gore, swearing, i think that's it?
contains: charles leclerc, gabriel bortoleto, + ollie bearman
word count: 552
charles leclerc:
he had been so incredibly excited to see your movie. you had warned him several dozen times that it was a horror movie and not a tame one. he didn't listen, of course, and decided it was a better idea to watch it when he was alone. at night. in a hotel room he was not familiar with.
… needless to say, you weren't exactly surprised when you woke up to your phone ringing. even less surprising was hearing charles sniffling and begging you to get a flight out because he's just seen you die a very gruesome death in the movie and now he desperately needs cuddles. he's definitely got a collection of stuffed animals he uses when he needs comfort but you're not available, and his favourite is a floppy bunny. charles is holding onto that bunny like his life depends on it after watching your movie.
you end up having to call one of the other drivers and ask them to keep him company until you get there. when you do, expect to be within arm's reach of your boyfriend at all times.
gabriel bortoleto:
he's actually kind of offended that the writers had the audacity to kill you off. the second he realizes what's about to happen he'll start angrily ranting about "how dare they!!" and all that.
then he sees you covered in the (fake) blood and you're so clearly pissed off even though you're dying and he just … slowly … trails off … until he's just staring at the screen. he doesn't even respond when you poke his arm to see if he's okay. all that's going through his head is holy fuck you look hot when you're angry and covered in blood—
it takes you a little while to realise what's actually going on, and you gotta just kinda keep poking and teasing him until he breaks out of it. let's just say if you wanna go all out for halloween there … gabi's definitely on board.
ollie bearman:
i actually think he really likes horror movies even though they give him nightmares? ollie loves them and finds them so interesting and even though he's so tense the whole time he just … he loves them! so when he finds out that you're gonna be in a horror movie?
he is so excited.
ollie makes a whole night of it. he'll order food from your favourite restaurant, set up a lil blanket fort for the two of you, make sure you know that he'll be extra jumpy that night, and then get your movie set up on his laptop. he can't watch horror movies on big screen because the detail makes it too scary for him. so you'll just have to get used to watching things on a laptop screen, sorry.
finally he gets to cuddle up to you and he's so excited to watch your movie!! he gets most of the way through before your character gets killed off and ollie … he just shuts his computer immediately.
the whole rest of the night is just spent assuring your boyfriend that you're fine, you're not upset about your character's ending, and also that yes, all of the actual horror bits in the movie were fake. then—and only then—will he start talking about the actual quality of the movie and praising your acting.

Part of my sing little birdie aka birb dad + birb baby series, but I'm yapping bullet points real quick (idk I may rewrite this into a proper story one day. I'm trying to stay focused and in a specific mindset rn for my dragon!Sylus AU 😔👍). Something about the last part of Sylus' event triggered this thought, so let's get into it.
Taking Little Birdie to the Amusement Park
It's Sylus' daughter's first time at the amusement park. She is three and excited, but not because of the rides and attractions
It's one of the rare occasions where she has both mom and dad together spending time with her
Sylus lavishes his daughter with attention and indulges in her whims
If baby girl wants Daddy to wear silly headbands and glasses, then he will in a heartbeat
He buys her whatever she wants at giftshops even if she doesn't ask
Man is basically doing the "buying my child whatever she touches" trend (MC is exasperated once she finds out, but lets it go since this is a special day for their family)
He is the one riding the rides with her as MC photographs everything
He lifts her onto her chosen horse on the carousel and stays by her side
"So, my little birdie, this is the trusty steed you have chosen? A fine horse indeed."
Baby girl is having the time of her life on kiddie rides
The best part about having a tall dad is riding his shoulders. Little Miss has the best view at the park. 🥹🫶
Sylus isn't concerned about losing her.
Onychinus henchmen are lurking around the park posing as guests, staff members, or mascots 😭👍
Personal babysitters bodyguards Luke and Kieran are always nearby to keep their eyes on their precious Little Miss
Dressed as Smiley Dino and Sunny Dino, they are suffocating in their suits (rip 😔), but Little Miss' laughter and excitement makes it all worth it
"Daddy, Daddy, Smiley Dino and Sunny Dino hugged me!"
(Later Luke & Kieran @ MC: say Miss Hunter...would it be possible if we get copies of that photo? 👉👈)
Mephisto is also always perched near the toddler to keep an eye on her and will report to Sylus about any concerns
You do not want to mess with this bird. He has beef with pigeons on a daily basis. 💀 He won't hesitate to take you on either not to mention Sylus is always giving him weird upgrades
Basically don't mess with this child. She has the protection of Onychinus and you do not want to meet her dad. Or worse. Her mom.
Around mid-afternoon, nap time is near. It's been hours at the park, lots of overindulgence, lots of walking. The sun is blazing hot, and baby girl is dozing off on Sylus' shoulder trying to stay awake.
He and MC find a nice shady area to rest for a bit and just have a nice quiet family/couple moment as their daughter naps in Sylus' arms
In the evening they have a meal at one of the restaurants as a family. Baby girl is rambling excitedly about her favorite parts of the day (spoiler alert: it's everything)
"Mommy...Daddy...can we do today again? 🥺"
Sylus & MC:

When there is a fireworks show, baby girl is sitting on Sylus' shoulders pointing at the sky in awe
Sylus leans down to MC, asking with a smirk, "Remember the last time we watched fireworks at that restaurant together?"
"Mommy, Daddy, look, look!"
Little birdie doesn't even realize she is tugging on her dad's hair. Sylus laughs it off. Her joy is his joy.
Sylus isn't really paying attention to the fireworks. He gazes at his wife's awestruck expression and smiles as his daughter laughs. He wonders if he had traded away all of his bad luck because right now, in this moment, he felt pretty damn lucky.
He hopes this is a core memory for his daughter, but even if she grows up and forgets this day, Sylus won't. This memory will stay with him for the rest of his life, her laughter and smiles were his to keep, his to cherish.
(As for the rest of Onychinus, this is their core memories, seeing their precious Little Miss having the family day she deserves 😭🫶)
#love and deepspace#love and deepspace sylus#love and deepspace x reader#lnds scenarios#sylus x reader#lnds series — sing little birdie#i thought i calmed down#what happened#anyway#let's just shove this onto my ever-growing wip pile#😔👍

Broken Mind | Josh Washington x Reader
......
Another day, another Until Dawn rewrite by yours truly <3
I've got Rami Malek on the brain again so I decided to revise this old 2016 fic I wrote about Josh being accompanied by Reader in the shed (after his prank reveal). Changed a few things around and added stuff from the prologue, but all in all the plot's the same (except they're together)
Anyways enjoy!
......
"Hey, [y/n]. Got a special delivery for you."
Hearing the quiet giggles of the Washington sisters, you looked up from your phone and smiled upon seeing your boyfriend being held up by the two of them.
He looked plastered as hell and half-asleep, but his eyes were slightly open. The moment they landed on you, lopsided grin spread across his lips.
"[Y/n]...baby...?"
"Yes. It's me, Josh." With a chuckle, you put down your phone and assisted the girls in helping him lay on the sofa. You decided to let him rest on top of you, seeing as he already had his arms wrapped around your torso. "Jeez, so clingy, huh? How much did you drink?"
"Mhm...I forgot.." His words were slurred.
"Of course you did." Putting your arms around him, you lightly scratched at his scalp with your fingertips, hearing his hums of content as he looked to his sisters.
While Hannah left, Beth smiled back and took a picture of him being all cuddly with you, reminding herself to send to you later. After that, she finally left you both alone.
"They take good care of you."
"Yeah..they're..the best." Josh mumbled tiredly into your chest, hugging you tighter. "But 'm glad you're here...thank you for being by my side. I love you sooooooooooo much."
"Of course, Joshie. I love you, too." You chuckled, holding him close until he dozed off again, before you ended up falling asleep yourself, enveloped by the warmth of the cabin fire and the one you loved most.
He probably won't remember much of this in the morning, but that was fine.
For once, everything felt right in the world.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
"[Y/n], honey? Baby? Sweetheart?"
Blinking, you returned to the cold and cruel present, looking to the man tied to the post.
"Yes, Josh?" You sighed tiredly, wiping the blood from the corner of your lip.
"I'm pretty cold. How 'bout we loosen these restraints a little and-?"
"I'm sorry, but...I don't think that's a good idea right now."
"What? I....I can't believe it. You would let those jerks do this to me?!! Your boyfriend? After all I've done for you?!!" Angrily, Josh tugged at his restraints, gnashing his teeth at you like some animal. "I feel hurt. Who does this to someone they love?!"
"First of all, I didn't tie you up. And second...you're not the only one who's gotten hurt tonight."
"If anyone deserves to feel hurt, it should be me! After what they did to my sisters..they had it coming."
As much as you wanted to snap at him for acting this way, you knew that he wasn't well, and getting angry right back wasn't going to make anything better.
Instead, you opted to look outside the shed, observing the snowfall while trying to ignore the sounds of him whining and struggling with the ropes.
Such sights used to calm your nerves, but now...it was nothing more than a grim reminder of how long and unforgiving this night has been, and how there's still a few hours until sunlight and rescue arrived.
How did you get here?
Well, it was supposed to be a reunion between friends.
You and Josh were still together after the horrible tragedy that befell his sisters exactly one year prior, and you were with him through the long days he spent trying to isolate himself, and the difficult nights he spent wishing he didn't wake up at all.
You stayed with him no matter what.
No matter how many times he tried pushing you away...you always stayed. And while he didn't express it as much as he wanted to, he appreciated it.
That's the only reason why he didn't subject you to the "prank" he had laid out for the rest of the group.
You knew his passion for film projects, having helped him with some small YouTube ones yourself. You knew that this year, he wanted to do something to "really bring the gang back together", and you let him be when he insisted on working alone.
God, why didn't you press him on what exactly this prank entailed?
Why didn't you pick up the signs that he was off his meds?
What he enacted was horrific beyond measure--a prank that you didn't even think he was capable of carrying out.
One that seemed so real that you were almost convinced that you lost him to a murderer.
When Chris came to you sobbing in remorse over how the "Psycho" tricked him into killing your boyfriend, you didn't know what to feel. You wanted to see the body to confirm it, but given his and Ashley's reactions..it wasn't worth scarring your eyes or mind over.
It left you unbelievably sad and numb, although you were left confused when through his blubbering, he admitted that the saw blade was rigged to kill Josh despite choosing to save him.
That was the first sign that you knew something was off.
You didn't know anybody that held a massive grudge against him to the point of rigging a trap to murder him only.
But only after Josh revealed everything to Chris, Ashley, Sam, Mike, and you....that's when it all made sense.
And you felt betrayed.
You couldn't believe he'd orchestrate this whole scheme behind your back.
How could you have been so naive and trusting?
You felt like you should have known what he was up to. The others gave you suspicious looks and even Mike wondered for a moment if you were an accomplice...but you weren't.
That was the truth.
You had no idea.
Now all you felt was lingering guilt and festering anger that this was Josh's twisted idea of "revenge" against the people who didn't even kill his sisters. Against people like Chris who didn't even know what happened until he woke up.
And in a way, you felt like it was against you for not waking him up in time to stop the prank that led to Hannah and Beth running out of the cabin.
No matter how many times he claimed you had nothing to do with it, you felt like he was punishing you, too.
So now, you, Chris, and Mike have taken him away from the others, to a shed where he couldn't hurt anybody. Apparently Jess was dead, and despite his insistence that he didn't kill her....Mike didn't believe a word he said, having seen her body firsthand in some mining elevator.
Then when he started making lewd comments about Chris and Ashley, both of the men were growing agitated, debating on whether to make him shut up by force or not.
Finally, you intervened before they could decide, offering to watch over him until sunrise. You're the only one who had a small chance to talk some sense into him and make him realize his mistakes.
Mike was reluctant to leave you alone with him, thinking he'll guilt trip you into letting him go, but you convinced him and Chris you'll be fine.
There were some...scary things you've seen out in the woods earlier, and the last thing you wanna do is leave Josh alone with them nearby.
Even after all the shitty things he did, even after faking his own death...you still loved him.
You didn't believe he murdered Jess.
That's not what Josh would do.
"Your sisters wouldn't have wanted this." You quietly said, looking back at the wide-eyed man. "I wish things were different that night. I wish they didn't get humiliated. God, I wish Hannah had talked to me instead. But this...all of this was wrong, Josh. What happened doesn't justify-"
"But it worked, didn't it? Listen, I...I-I didn't want anyone dead." He stammered. "I just wanted to see that same terror on their faces. And I got them good! I got you all!!"
"...did you have to give Ash a black eye, though?"
"Look, she stabbed me with scissors! And it still hurts like a motherfucker."
You just gave him an expression that read "well I would have too if a killer was chasing me", and he seemed to understand...given how his shoulders slumped with defeat.
"Baby, 'm sorry..this...was not how our night's supposed to go. But you know what? I'm glad I was the only one laughing! Because NOW THEY KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE ON THE OTHER SIDE!!" Tears of anger pricked his eyes as his voice unexpectedly rose.
You whole body tensed, but you stayed calm, knowing he's only lashing out. "Josh, I know they hurt you. And hurting them back might feel good..but you hurt me too by faking your own death and not telling me how far you intended to take this prank."
"..you would've stopped me if I told you." He mumbled.
"Well maybe I should've been more persistent." You huffed. "If I was, we wouldn't be here. We wouldn't have to talk about why Jess died and why you seem to be the prime suspect-"
"I swear to god, it wasn't me! I don't even know where she is!" Josh snapped, before he curled up, like a child in timeout. "Mike..he wouldn't explain the wheres and whens. He just kept hitting me, pushing me..telling me to shut up...but I didn't do it...I swear. Please, please believe me, [y/n]. I'm sorry that you got roped into this. I-It's..the..the last thing I wanted.." His voice softened. "I'm sorry I've been bad..."
Slowly, you could see bits and pieces of the Josh you once knew coming back. His mind wasn't all there, of course, but you've known him forever.
You should be thinking with your brain and not your heart.
But....
You still love him, and believe in second chances.
"Joshua."
He perked up, anticipating the worst as you pulled up a chair to sit in front of him. For you to say his name like that couldn't have been good.
Maybe you were gonna side with all the rest of them and spit on him.
Maybe you were gonna say that you're leaving him alone here, as Dr. Hill had warned would happen.
Maybe you were finally going to tell him what an unforgivable monster he wa-
"I believe you're innocent. You're not one to take a life. No matter what they say." You suddenly spoke, putting a hand to his soot-coated cheek
Almost immediately, his twitching stopped, and he stared straight at you.
It's like you put him in a trance.
"I'm not gonna leave you."
"..e-even though I've been..all messed up?" He asked cautiously. "I-I mean..I haven't been a good boyfriend lately..."
"That hasn't stopped me from being there for you before." You chuckled. "We're gonna work through this. Even if it's just you and I."
"............"
"I believe you when you say you didn't kill her. Do you believe me?"
It took him a few moments to study your expression, seeing the genuine care and warmth in your eyes. Despite all the horrors you've seen tonight, there was still a spark of hope in them.
That was the light he needed.
"...I-I do..I really do." He sniffled, resting his head on your shoulder, grateful that you didn't push him away despite being covered in dirt and fake blood. "'m sorry...I-I don't deserve you."
"Oh, honey..." You put your arms around him, sighing softly as you felt him tremble against you, tears slowly dampening your jacket. At this point, you knew you got him back, and you were so relieved. "We'll figure something out. Just stay with me."
"You don't think I'm a monster..?" He asked through his sobs. "I mean, everyone treated me like one...you've seen them.."
"....I know. Neither of us can change how they feel. But listen, the only monster here is-"
All of the sudden, a shrill inhumane screech echoed from somewhere outside, deep in the woods, interrupting the tender moment between you two.
Josh sat up with a start, his tearful eyes wide and terrified as he looked to you. "Wh-What was that?"
"That's the real monster I was gonna mention. They call it the Wendigo. Hang on." Crouching down, you managed to find a small pocketknife on his toolbelt, using it to cut the ropes binding him. "It's fast. But it's blind as fuck. We need to get out of here."
Nodding, he got up as quickly as he could, having no time to rub his aching wrists as you grabbed his hand.
The shrieks became louder, forcing you two to hide further inside the shed, sticking close to the back wall where the shadows were darkest. "Shit. Don't move a muscle, okay?"
His breath hitched as the wendigo dropped down in front of the entrance, creeping inside the small building to look for prey. But he took your advice and tried staying still.
You could practically hear you own heartbeat as you held your breath, thumping louder and louder as the creature wandered around. Josh watched it scrape its claws along the wall, creating a sound most unpleasant in an attempt to make him flinch.
It then made direct eye contact with you both.
While you managed to keep perfectly still, you could hear Josh's quiet whimpers, indicating he had a much harder time considering how jittery he was earlier.
All you could do was hope and pray it would leave.
Otherwise...both of you were dead.
Just when you thought your boyfriend was going to lose it completely, the distant snapping of a branch caused the wendigo to turn at blinding speed and sprint out of the shed, returning to the surrounding woods.
"Okay...thank christ.." Letting his hand go, you took a breather, only to see that he was still standing rigid. His eyes showed nothing but pure terror, as he began mumbling something like "was it real" under his breath.
"Josh? Baby?" You shook his shoulders a bit, and he blinked several times, coming back to reality. Relief immediately crossed his face as he realized you were still here. "It's okay. It's gone."
"Tha....That thing w-was real?"
"Yes. I know how to outsmart it. But we can't stay here. We'll be safer at the lodge with the others. We just gotta keep our heads down until then."
"But..what about the-?"
"Don't worry about them. Let's worry about getting out of here, alright?"
Wordlessly, Josh nodded, practically clinging to your arm as you both headed outside and down the snowy trail. He kept mumbling incoherent things, reassuring himself that he was safe with you.
Obviously, he seemed pretty shellshocked, considering the monster he just encountered was real and not a product of his imagination.
He didn't know whether that was better or worse.
Either way, you allowed him to hold onto you, knowing he needed someone--anyone--to lean on right now. And fortunately you were exactly the person he needed.
The only one who could help him come back to his senses.
You swore to never abandon him, and you intend to keep that promise even after all that happened tonight.
You still loved him, and he loved you.
That hasn't changed.

⛓️ 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗗 𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗧 ♯ 4.2k ──── 「 生きがい 」
Friday, The Dean's Office, 3:32 p.m.
“Simply put, Riki is a very misunderstood youth, and you, _____, so happen to be one of the few people who sincerely understand him.”
You stared back at your father, who sat in his leather chair at his desk, a dumbfounded expression upon your face as you crossed your arms. “And you're telling me all of this because of what again?”
“Because I need your help,” Riki butted in from where he sat beside where you stood on your feet, drawing your attention back to his casual disposition.
From the way his long legs extended lazily before him to the way his black combat boots hit the ground with loud thumps every time his foot bounced out of boredom, the poor kid was just as big as his behavioral problems...
That is, roughly 187 centimeters worth...
However, in spite of his large stature and occasional bouts of clumsiness, Riki Nishimura was lighter than a feather on his feet when it came to dancing, a.k.a., one of the few things in his life that he found joy in, aside from you, his family, and the comfort of his bed...
Looking back at your father, he gave you a pleading look, hoping that he would somehow soften your heart without the use of any more words.
And it’s not that you didn't want to help Riki...
I mean, he was one of your closest friends, and you otherwise would've leaped at any opportunity to spend more time with him, so long as it wasn't under such circumstances.
In the past, your father never really approved of your friendship with Riki, simply because he had a track record of rebellion according to the other universities he attended and ended up getting kicked out of.
'A homeschooled delinquent,' some would call him, but you preferred sweeter names for him—names that described the real him.
It's just that the whole idea of having you, the “perfect student,” coach a more troubled peer seemed like a poor excuse of a publicity stunt.
Riki was much more to you than that... he deserved better than to be scrutinized like some sort of criminal just for being his authentic self.
And the odd reality was that you and the other kids at your university with allegedly clean records were no different from Riki.
All misguided and all a little reckless here and there...
Taking risks was part of being young, last time you checked.
The only difference is that Riki wasn't as good at hiding those parts of him like the rest of the students at your university were...
They were either forced or pressured to hide behind a mask that resembled good grades, perfect attendance... stuck within a cookie-cutter framework, and exhibiting perpetual compliance to the ways of the academic world—
“Fine,” you sighed, straightening your posture to appear more obliging than you were actually feeling, “but only if you promise not to make this some sort of project, Dad... Riki's my friend, not some charity case to make you look good.”
Your father scoffed at your insulting words. “What do you take me as, some kind of crook? Such a thought never even crossed my mind, _____,” he corrected sternly before continuing, “My concerns for Riki come from a good place and have nothing to do with what I can gain from you agreeing to help us-”
“Fix him, right?” You interrupt, making a shy smirk tug at the corners of Riki's mouth at the awkward tension in the room now.
“Honey, you know that's not what this is about,” your father sighs, getting up from his seat and straightening out his suit. “Riki is not a broken lamp that he should be fixed... but a lost soul in need of positive redirecting.”
“And who better to help than a fellow peer?” Riki winks at you, making you roll your eyes at him.
“Precisely,” the dean finishes, pushing his chair under the desk before making his way to the office door. “I expect you two to run into hurdles on this journey, but hopefully it's a process that helps you both grow... together...”
You shake your head, uncrossing your arms from over your chest as your father’s eyes flicker between you and Riki now.
“Oh, and one more thing, ____... this young man may be troubled to some degree, but he can certainly teach you a lesson or two on respect.”
Slam.
The office door closed slowly, but with its habitually loud locking sound, making your insides shake a bit.
You look back at Riki, who only had a shrug to offer you, though you knew your father was expecting you and Riki to see yourselves out of his office.
So y’all did, all the way to your separate homes, where you would dread the following Monday when Project: “Positively Redirect” Riki would commence!...
⋆༺𓆩☠︎︎𓆪༻⋆
Next Monday, ART Room 8080, 5:30 p.m.
The bottom of your ass was stinging given how long you had been sitting in the uncomfortable desk chair.
Your back had also started to burn with a similar pain, and the only thing that seemed to delight you amidst the lengthy "Elements of Art" lecture was once again the tall boy sitting beside you.
The voice of your instructor faded away in your ears as you observed Riki holding an ink pen, gliding its ball-tip against his skin in careful lines.
“You suck at drawing,” you whisper to him.
“And your mother’s a cow,” he retorts plainly, despite the smirk curling at his mouth.
From what you can tell, he was drawing a spiderweb in the shape of a heart on the inside of his wrist; The same romantic spiderweb design that was graffitied on your university's parking lot pavement a few days ago.
You always found it endearing how Riki's right wrist would be full of inky doodles by the end of each lecture, thanks to him being left-handed.
Though, other people found his habit to be odd… immature, even... and you never understood why those people even felt the need to speak—
“You’re really making an effort at this character development thing, aren’t you, babes?” You ask sarcastically, tilting your head at him now.
“Yup,” he answers matter-of-factly, eyes still trained on the inky design staining his pale skin.
You took in the expression on his face—the way his lips often poked out slightly like a duck whenever he focused on something.
It was a sight that always made you giggle inside… mostly because you found cute things to be humorous, but also because Riki had a way of making you feel all giddy for reasons you didn't fully understand—
“Wanna kiss ‘em or something?” He asked, looking you dead in the eye with his own piercing ones.
“E-excuse me?” You scoffed with both confusion and feigned disgust.
“I mean these,” he said, showing you the doodle of a skull on his wrist that had big, red lips to match the crimson bows at each pigtail. “Heard you like it juicy,” he continued, raising his eyebrows at you flirtatiously.
“Shut the fuck up,” you swear, shoving his shoulder slightly.
And with that, the class was concluded, and students were loading up their textbooks into their backpacks in every which direction—
“You’re really not that different from me, y’know that?” He said in a mocking tone, “Especially not with that raging potty mouth of yours...”
“I was provoked to use such language, you dick.”
“Then you have very poor emotional regulation skills for your age.”
...
“I’m leaving,” you say, getting up from the seat and slinging your bag over your shoulder, “have fun making out with your new dOodLe sKuLl giRLfriEnD... Heard you like ‘em skinny, anyways…”
“Pfft... Where’d you hear that crap?”
“Around,” you lied, knowing that Riki wasn't the type of guy to have weight preferences when it came to girls...
He only had personality preferences, and so far, you were his absolute favorite person yet, crumby attitude and all.
“Whatever,” he said, in between your brief voyage to the campus lockers where you put your things away. “Also,” Riki began again, leaning against his locker while looking at his reflection in the mirror, “should I... change?”
“What, your diaper?”
“No, my outfit, stupid. Unless you don’t mind being seen with a guy who looks like me these days...”
His words sting you for some reason, and you know exactly what he was trying to imply with that comment.
The other day, Riki heard your father complaining to an instructor in his office about student's not 'abiding by standards of clothing apparel,' and of course, the poor boy assumed the comment was specifically directed towards him-
“You look fineee, Riki,” you reassure him, closing your locker before caressing the side of his arm gently. “Besides, I'd never feel ashamed walking beside you... ripped jeans, piercings, and all...”
His mind paused for a second, focusing a little too hard on the way your touch somehow warmed him from both the outside and within.
“Hey,” you started, your voice pulling him back from his thoughts, “Earth to Riki...?”
“Y-yea, right... Earth,” he stammered, running a shy hand through his hair before adjusting his backpack over his shoulder.
“Let's get out of here, then,” you chuckled, walking down the hall now as he followed closely behind you.
⋆༺𓆩☠︎︎𓆪༻⋆
Later, On Some Unknown, Majestic Path, 6:17 p.m.
You two made it to a bridge—the crossing road where you and him expected to straighten out the crooked mess of rumors and past infamies plaguing Riki’s reputation.
“You got the letter, right?”
The letter, he heard your words replay in his mind...
The very letter in which Riki divulged a sincere handwritten apology to the Dean of your university discussing his declining academic performance, poor behavior, aptitudes to improve, and blah fucking blah...
Anyone with a good head on their shoulders could tell that Riki was a fantastic artist, but every rose had its thorn, with Riki's impulsive creative side often getting the best of him...
Aside from going against the dress code and skipping classes, Riki recently vandalized school property with a spontaneous mural of skulls, spiderwebs, and other edgy doodles on the parking lot pavement.
Nobody knew he was responsible for it aside from you, and you had no intention of ratting him out for it...
Yes, it was an unusual design to see every morning at the center of such a prestigious university, but regardless of all that, you figured the graffiti looked pretty cool, actually...
Besides, it was an art school for crying out loud; weren't students supposed to express themselves here?
Or perhaps you only felt that way because Riki was responsible for it, but I digress.
“Yeah, I double checked before we left,” he said plainly, looking down the brick road ahead. “Oh, and uh... I know I've never showed you, but my place is actually the small one right over there… with the candle-like furnace on top... you see it?”
“Yeah, I see it,” you smile softly, just as you catch on to him walking ahead of you and down the right path instead of the left one.
“Hey, the dean's office is this way, remember?”
“Uh huh... and it’s still gonna be there when we get back.”
“Bro, where’re you going?”
“Bro, nowhere,” he replied mockingly, still walking away from you, “I just need to clear my head before sending this stupid letter… just in case I run into the dean or something...”
“And would that really be so bad?” You pressed, “I swear, it’s like everyone views my dad like a scary monster just because he’s doing his job...”
Riki felt himself internally gag at the reminder that you were in fact the deans daughter.
“Since when do you, of all people, defend your dad?”
“Hey, I may be a disrespectful fart towards him at times, but that doesn't mean I can't stand up for him.”
“Uh huh,” Riki nods skeptically, “he must be giving you extra brownie points and allowance for that shit or something...”
“Yeah, actually, he is! And I don't plan on sharing any with you, either... not my brownies points NOR my petty cash...”
“Good,” he retorts playfully, mirroring your bratty behavior, “my piggy bank likes being empty, anyways... PLUS, I’m trying to cut back on sugar these days...”
“Well, good luck with that then... citrus helps, though… with the sugar cravings, I mean.”
“I know... that’s why I’m hanging out with you... duhhh!”
“Oh, so you’re implying that I'm sour, now?”
“If the shoe fits,” he shrugs, and a few moments pass before you’re walking through a front door, through his living room, and eventually onto a balcony.
The house was so dimly lit that you couldn’t make out much of anything while inside, other than the smell of tea and leather cleaner.
“What d’you think?” Riki asks, spreading his arms out to show off, “Gnarly landscape, am I right?”
“You’re so right,” you agree, walking over to the ledge and observing the large pasture that made up his backyard. “It’s beautiful here.”
The two of you look over the edge for a while, folding your arms over the stone balcony until you catch him looking off to the other side, something about him immediately catching your attention.
“Woah?” You exclaim, finding your hands in his hair as you turn his head, examining the thing that caught your eye.
“Woah what? Is there a bug on me or something?” Riki asks, bending his knees slightly so you can reach him better.
“No, it's a tattoo.” You clarify, “I didn't know you had any real ones...”
“Oh yeahhh… I uh... I got that one a while back when I was in high school... I have another one, too, but it's under my clothes, so I can't show you until we're marri-”
“What's it say?” You ask with a whisper, examining the fine textures of inky Japanese characters staining the ivory skin behind his ear.
The tattoo in itself was relatively simple, but you believe that's what made it all the more stunning...
“Ikigai...” He answers with a deep voice, looking in your eyes with his own piercing ones, which makes you retreat your touch from his hair, “it refers to something that gives us our sense of purpose... our reason to live...”
The silence is so loud after he says that that the sound of distant birds and wind-chimes fills your ears as if you were wearing headphones.
That's when you hear a door hinge creak in the distance—
“Riki?! I don’t have my glasses on, but your bedroom looked oddly tidy and you never tidy your room, so now I’m worried—”
“In a minute, Grams!” Riki called out in a deep voice, resting his hands at his sides as he looked back at you, the elderly woman having stayed outside, keeping to herself.
Despite her few wrinkles, she was a perfect shadow of Riki, from her similarly fierce eyes, the long legs she stood on, to her plump, duck-like lips—
“What’s the deal with your face right now?” Riki asked, drawing your attention back to him.
“Oh, you mean my beauty?” You returned sarcastically.
“No, the other thing,” he corrected, “…made your eyes go all big and bright.”
“Oh… Possibly shock, then?”
“But from what cause?”
“Grams,” you repeated, looking over the balcony at the same shed-door the woman just came from. “I didn’t know you lived with anybody…”
“I don’t; she lives with me,” Riki continued, flicking a mosquito off his arm. “She’s kind of mental, so I gotta take care of her like she took care of me.”
“That’s sweet,” you murmur quietly to yourself, but he hears you anyway-
“What’d you say?”
“Nothing…”
“You definitely said something.”
“No I didn’t?”
“Haven’t I ever told you how terrible you are at lying?”
“No, actually,” you respond plainly, “But you have told me that you think I’m beautiful... well, indirectly, but it still counts.”
He furrows his brows at you. “When did I say that?”
“Literally a few seconds ago?”
“Seriously?”
“Damn… Now I'm starting to think you didn't mean it.”
“No no no, I meant it!” Riki says, raising his voice slightly, “P-probably...”
“Well, thanks anyway,” you return, looking back over the balcony at the sight of his grandmother roaming their garden.
“I think you're beautiful, too, Riki.”
A silence swarmed between you two now.
Not an awkward silence, but a silence nonetheless.
A pleasant peace…
Riki bit his lip to keep himself from smiling, but you had already noticed his expression by now, poking a finger at the apple of his slightly rosy cheek, making him swat your hand away playfully.
“Stop that or I'll bite you,” he threatens.
“But babyyy… you look so cute when you're blushing,” you teased, making the poor boy feel like he was just seconds from internally combusting because of you.
Riki never got worked up over compliments like this, but then again, you proved to have a stronger effect on his emotions… one that even you father could see.
“I seriously will bite you, ____,” he warns again through a contagious chuckles, grabbing a hold of your wrist at the same time your hand gripped his bicep, making him stop in his actions.
You two shyly meet each other's eyes now, faint smiles present on both your faces until you release your grip on his arm, his touch still remaining at your wrist.
“Riki.” You speak quietly, and for reasons you don’t understand at first… but that’s when he decides to speak up instead—
“I wanna show you one more thing,” he starts, still holding your wrist as he steps up with a strong lunge onto the balcony ledge, resting his foot on the wooden plank attached to it.
“Riki, get down from there!” You shout.
“Not until you join me first.” He reasons with a smirk.
Judging from the way he briefly peeks down at the ground beneath him, you can already tell that he wants you to jump with him.
“Riki… I’m not doing that... I-I can't… and I can’t let you do that, either.”
Funny thing is, you said all of this while doing a lunge yourself, joining the tall boy on the balcony ledge and holding his hand tightly as you let your feet find the wobbly plank next.
“Why not?…” He presses.
“Because… you’re all skin and bones, baby,” you sigh nervously, feeling your heart rate increase with every passing second. “I’m afraid that I’ll either hurt you or that you’ll hurt yourself.”
Riki gives you a shady look now. “You have no idea how insulting that is to me, do you?”
“Be careful, asshole!” You shriek, his strength having tugged at your hand, making you tread even further down the plank now.
“Geez, would you relax, drama queen? I’m doing fineee, see? We’re fine… Just don’t let go of my hand until I say so, okay?”
“H-how am I even supposed to trust you in a state like this?” Your voice comes out just as wobbly as you feel in your knees, being sure not to look down as that would only make things worse for you.
“Hmm… not sure,” he shrugs, “But maybe it would help if you stopped policing me for like... one fucking second?”
“Fine. A second has passed, now can we PLEASEE go back to the bridge—ahhh!”
Riki jumps first, but because you were holding hands, you fall with him, tumbling into the grassy pasture before landing on top of him.
“That was fun, right?” Riki asks while scanning your face, wind knocked out of him; he's panting slightly beneath you, chest rising and falling given the rush of adrenaline he just received.
“Are we even alive right now?” You ask back, seriously not being able to believe that you both survived such a fall... everything around you seemed light, and you weren't sure if that had something to do with your head spinning or something worse. “Please tell me this isn’t heaven.”
“Not unless you really think that’s what being on top of me feels like…”
You gave him the deadliest side-eye you could muster—
“Shut the fuck up,” you curse him, making a light chuckle rumble in his chest.
For a brief moment, you look up, just now realizing that Riki’s backpack was scattered among the grass with all of his school supplies decorating the landscape.
Sighing, you planted your palms on the ground before trying to get up, only for the strength of Riki’s arm to keeps you down, fusing your body’s together.
“Riki, the dean's office is gonna be closing soon, we gotta get going-”
“And my future can wait, ____,” he said, looking into your eyes, “just let me enjoy this moment in the present for a little longer, alright?”
You wait to answer before eventually nodding, watching his chest heave slower now, but still in a rising and falling manner.
“You're nervous about something,” you whisper, even though it was more like a question to him.
You felt your stomach flutter at the way his hand was secured at your waist now, trailing up to the side of your face with his other hand.
“I am,” he says plainly, voice deep and vulnerable, “so please, just... don't say anything or else you'll make this worse for me, okay?”
“You're not about to try and kiss me, are you!?” You ask, screwing your eyebrows at him.
“And just like that, you made it worse for me,” Riki sighs, not being brave enough to meet your eyes anymore.
His hands leave your body, falling beside him as if he were about to start making snow angels in the bed of grass.
“You think you deserve a kiss—of all things—after almost getting us killed just a few seconds ago?”
“I meannnn,” he starts, looking back at you now before repositioning his hands behind his head with latticed fingers, “one kiss wouldn't hurt, right?… Maybe even just a few…”
No words are exchanged from this point.
It just becomes a moment of you two looking at each other, your hands roaming up his torso now as you sit up to straddle him, keeping him pinned to the ground with your weight before placing a kiss on his cheek.
“You're a very odd boy, Riki Nishimura,” you say, watching a smile spread across his face as his skin still tingled where you kissed him.
Your hands find his that were tucked beneath his head and put them back around your body like they were before.
“I may be odd, but the least you can do is kiss me normally,” he whispers, taking hold of your face and crashing his lips into yours, eyes fluttering shut at the blissful contact.
And it feels too good to say it's your first time... It feels too right...
You tilt your head to deepen the contact, making him hum beneath you at the sudden way you took control again, feeling his hand gently cradle the nape of your neck.
“Please,” he says breathlessly in between, catching on to the way your body shuddered when his touch went under your shirt, resting at the dip of your waist, “Don't make me stop yet...”
And all you can do is pant in response, feeling your heart rate increase with the passion as his tongue just barely comes into contact with yours, making you melt into the warmth of his lips even more.
But his delicate fingers are cold as they touch you, not necessarily wandering, but inching their way up from your waist to the side of your ribs, only to pull you closer as your bodies meshed into a sprawl of flustered feelings.
“You just can't get close enough to me, can you?” You ask him through a quiet breath, making him chuckle slightly as your catty question.
“Don't rub it in, dweeb,” he replies with a raspy voice, just as a low groan slips past his pretty lips, and you're just now realizing that you were kissing along his jawline, his head thrown back against the grass as your soft lips kept peppering his skin, “I'm actually enjoying what you're doing to me for once...”
And his last sentence comes out so quietly, you otherwise would've missed it if you weren't right by his neck, humming with each kiss you placed against him, making his grip at your waist tighten slightly until you abruptly pulled away, looking back at him with your own fuzzy vision...
Despite that, you could still make out the lovesick expression taking over his gorgeous features, both his heart and mind in a haze as he looked back at you, purity dancing in his eyes.
“W-why'd you stop?” He stammers, almost pouting as a smirk tugs at the corner of your mouth now, your own cheeks being dusted a rosy hue given the blood rushing to your face.
“Because,” you say plainly, crawling off of him now as he lets out an exaggerated sigh, sulking at the missing warmth of you straddling him, “that's all you deserve for the day.”
“And tomorrow?” He presses, eyes half-lidded.
“I'll tell you after we deliver this letter to the dean,” you say, looking up at the window to his house, “and when your grandma isn't watching us...”
“Wait, she's what?”
Riki sits up now, whipping his head almost instantly in the direction of his house to see what you were still blushing about, and it was none other than his grandmother, clapping in the distance at the sight of you and Riki laying beside each other on the grass.
“So that's why you've been tidying up recently; you've met a pretty girl,” she says in an old voice, making him hide his face with his hands while groaning with embarrassment. “Awww, don't be shy; she just had her lips all over you... Oh, and I'm his grandmother, by the way!”
“Nice to meet you,” you say while giggling, watching Riki practically crumble to pieces, knowing that his grandma had just seen everything.
"Well, make sure you two don't stay out too late... it's getting dark,” the woman warned, even though it was still relatively sunny outside.
Must be her vision, you thought to herself.
“Got it, Grams,” Riki sighed, sitting up now with a forced smile as he waved his grandma off, the door creaking behind her as the sound of her television program faded off with the melody of her laughter.
“You good?” You ask, catching on to the way Riki's sight pans off now, a certain thought rising to his mind as he took a few shaky breaths.
“Y-yea, I'm alright,” he answers, not meeting your eyes until he asks, “You didn't bite me, did you?”
His fingers find his neck now, grazing over the light pink spot where you had kissed him, but it was only that color because of your lip balm, not because you bit him.
“I might have nibbled, yes...” You start timidly, trying to hold back a smile at the way his eyes widened now, worried that you might mark him. “Don't blame me though when you started it.”
“No, I didn't, you blood thirsty vampire,” he scoffs with over-exaggerated offense. “There's a mark on me now, isn't there?”
"No, you idiot... Besides, I wouldn't want your grandma to have a hickey as her first impression of me,” you correct, getting up from the ground now to collect his scattered school supplies from around the yard.
Your words lingered in his mind for a bit.
A girl like you leaving a bad first impression? The thought seemed foreign to him, but at the same time, comforting...
He was finally starting to see things the way you saw them. You and him really weren't all that different—just two people from different walks of life, upholding varied reputations, but still and all with kindred spirits.
Spirits for fun and adventure... youth and romance...
“Wasn't even worth it,” you mumbled to yourself, picking up the envelope that was now stained with a bit of dirt given the fall.
“What wasn't worth it?” He repeated, looking over his shoulder to find you on your knees in the grass, hair slightly disheveled from all the action.
“Jumping, first of all... and second, kissing you...”
“Right,” he says while drawing out the syllable, side-eyeing you with his legs crossed, “Because I definitely told you to get on top of me and kiss all over my neck like a human mosquito.”
“Trust me, I regret doing that.” You tease, fake gagging, to which he chuckled at you, “Your lips tasted weird, anyway...”
“Pfft... weird how?”
“Sour,” you poke, making him look down in his lap, smiling at the memory of you two in the hallway earlier.
Eventually, he gets up to help you gather the rest of his textbooks, pencils, notes, and chocolate bars that fell from his backpack, holding it open as you loaded it up and set trail back up the hill you just jumped off of.
“And you're sure this whole letter thing is still a good idea?” He asks, adjusting the strap to his backpack over his shoulder as you two walked beside each other.
You take a second to glance at yourselves, taking in the light of your messy clothes, blushing faces.
"Oh, you’re definitely still sending that.”
“Cool… But should I revise it at all since we have extra time?”
“Maybe tomorrow,” is all you say, taking his hand in yours as y’all walk side by side...

Hiii I have a request for Matt Murdock I was thinking him with an reader who’s job has gotten more stressful and it starts to get to them they get dizzy and lightheaded but brush it off until it happens around Matt and he can sense that it happened and he gets all protective and caring
Preferably fem reader but gn is also totally fine so everyone can enjoy it !
If this isn’t your cup of tea I totally get that !
In His Arms
Thank you for requesting, sweetie. I kind of went off track a little and I'm sorry :( (If you want me to rewrite it I happily will!) But either way, I hope you enjoy it!
Pairing: Matt Murdock x Fem!Reader
Summary: Overwhelmed by your growing workload and the pressure to prove yourself, you keep your struggles hidden—even from Matt. When the stress leads to a breakdown, he pulls you back, reminding you that love means sharing the load.
TW: Panic attack, mentions of anxiety, pet names (I can't help it), swearing
Masterlist
Stress was a familiar feeling to you. Its sharp claws seemed always to be gripping onto you tightly. You’ve learnt how to manage the lack of air in your lungs and the painful squeezing of your heart whenever you go through a rough patch.
That’s why the feeling of anxiety creeping up your spine was carelessly ignored. You regret that you shrugged the feeling away, too focused on your work. It’s much easier to calm your bones' nervous trembles before it worsens.
But now it’s too late.
You’ve been so distracted by your work. Your colleague had just gone on maternity leave after giving birth to twins. You weren’t sure what would happen to her workload, but you certainly didn’t think it would all be passed down to you.
Now all your brain can seem to focus on is the deadlines coming closer by the minute. They flash in your mind each time you consider taking a break. You never take a break - this is your one chance to prove to your boss that you’re ready to take on more responsibility. The rumours floating around the office of potential promotions, motivating your hard work ethic.
You’ve always been a hard worker; had always been distracted by what you consider important rather than what was essential- like eating, or sleeping. Each time you got away with it. You didn’t have anyone to look after you.
Until Matt came along.
He’s such an attentive man and would be even without his heightened senses. You knew he’d be worried about your desperation to complete your work, completely gone to the rest of the world as your stomach grumbled louder and your under eyes got darker.
He’s a natural worrier. That’s what compelled you to keep your stress a secret. It’s hard lying to a human lie detector, so you’ve taken to avoiding instead. It’s easy to avoid him when you’re so busy, anyway. A couple of messages per day seems to keep him subdued for now and you’re glad; it’s all the attention you could offer.
Your lip is pulled between your teeth, chewing hard enough to draw the taste of metallic blood. None of the words before you make sense through your blurry eyesight. As you attempt to read the same sentence for the third time, you angrily rip off your glasses and groan.
Black spots take over your vision as you rub at your eyes aggressively, hoping the sickeningly dizzy feeling that’s making your throat feel tight will go away. It’s useless, yet you only allow yourself a second break before gulping down some water and returning to work.
Your phone rings as soon as your fingertips touch the keys of your laptop and a curse slips out of your mouth before you can stop it. You hate yourself for the spark of annoyance that has your blood boiling when you read Matt’s name on your phone.
He’d already left three messages from before. As well as a voice message that you hadn’t yet listened to; you were practically forced to answer the phone so as not to draw concern. You’re determined not to burden him with your issues - he’s a vigilante for God’s sake, he doesn’t need your petty problems on top of his own.
“Hey, Sweetheart.” His deep voice crackles through your phone speaker. Instantly, your shoulders relax and your eyes flutter shut. He’s the bright sun during cold days, the flowers during winter; beautiful and everything you long to see.
“Hey, Matt.” You respond lazily, mustering up enough energy to open your eyes and read the words on your laptop screen. You use one hand to type while the other holds your phone to your ear. You can hear his smile in his voice. “I’ve barely talked to you all day. I thought you were coming to mine for dinner. Did you get my voicemail?”
Guilt nags at your stomach. “I’m so sorry, Matt,” the little sigh you can hear through the other line has your heart splintering, “I’ve just been so busy with staying on top of my work as well as Mara’s-”
“It’s okay. I know how busy you’ve been. I could come by with dinner. I can do some work while you do yours.” You hate to diminish the hope in his voice, but you know he'd be worried about your obvious stress as it shines through in your old clothing and unbrushed hair (not that he’d be able to see but feel).
“Can we do a raincheck?” You whisper, guilt nagging at your stomach. His voice is so sweet. So understanding. It makes you want to cry. “Of course, baby. Try to eat, please. And take breaks. I’ll call you tomorrow; maybe we can go out for lunch.”
“Maybe,” If I’ve got enough work done, “Love you.”
“Love you too.”
You drop your phone on your lap as soon as the call ends. For once, you’re thankful for the large amounts of work, as it distracts you from the guilt that claws and tugs at your skin.

The second time Matt calls, you’re nose-deep in paperwork that was slammed down on your desk. ‘More of Mara’s work,’ your boss said before leaving you with the rasing anxiety in your chest. Thoughts of taking your lunch break didn’t even assimilate in the blurry haze of your mind.
Only the shrill ring of your phone brought you out of your bubble of work. Sighing, you don’t bother to check the name before picking it up, as you already know who it is. “Hey, Matt.” Your hand still scribbles words on the paper, phone pressed awkwardly against your ear by your shoulder.
“Hey. I called to see if you wanted lunch, but you sound busy.” Unlike last time, his voice doesn’t soothe your racing heart. If anything he makes it worse. “I’m so sorry,” you hope he can hear the sincerity in your voice, “I miss you. As soon as the crazy amount of work has subsided, I’ll call you.”
“Is there any way I can help?” You can’t help but smile at his caring nature, wanting nothing more than to be with him. But you know if you went to lunch you’d be too focused on work to be good company. “Remember that I love you?”
His laugh makes your heart melt, anxiety melting away with it. “Of course. As long as you remember that I love you. I won’t call so I don’t distract you from your work, but please take care of yourself. I love you so much, honey.”
“I love you too.” You hang up the phone and instead of returning to work immediately, you just sit there in silence, staring at the piles of paperwork in front of you. The sting of unshed tears joined by a nervous feeling in your stomach is enough to make you want to throw up. You’re so tired.
You should have listened to your body. You should have gone out for lunch and taken a break. But instead, you got back to work, ignoring the bright red signs of a panic attack on the rise.

Having been diagnosed with anxiety when you were younger, you’ve learned to identify signs of an upcoming panic attack. First, you begin to feel dizzy, then a little lightheaded. Your heart begins to hurt, and your stomach starts to turn. Then you can’t breathe, and you’re scratching at your skin to give your lungs more space to breathe.
Now, as you stand in your kitchen, staring at the piles of paperwork that cover the dining room table, it’s hard to ignore how your body reacts to the sight of the never-ending workload; the feelings you so carelessly ignored before forced to be brought to attention.
Your eyesight is unfocused, and you are unable to concentrate on the hand you’re using to prepare a small dinner. Your hands violently shake by your side and feel incredibly weak. But that isn’t what worries you; it’s the lack of air entering your lungs that has your eyes squeezed shut.
Feelings of worthlessness travel up your throat and block your airways. You’re having a panic attack. The realization has you sliding down the fridge and to the floor, tears running freely down your flushed cheeks. You bring your knees to your chest, hands scratching at your throat as if it would allow air into your beaten lungs.
Your body feels so weak, you’re sure you wouldn’t be able to stand up if you tried. You’re lost to the darkness and anguish the past weeks have wrought upon you; lost to the cruel insecurities your mind created to fool you into this vicious despair.
No matter how hard you cry, how hard you claw and scrape at your skin, you still can’t breathe. Hopelessness washes over your chilled skin, pulling you into its shadows. You can do nothing but let it take you as its own, the fight for air warring off as you succumb to the darkness that spots your eyes.
And as your eyes flutter shut, you fail to notice the opening of the window in the living room. You fail to notice the hurried steps and the gloved hands that hold your face gently. Or the man’s desperate calls of your name.

The first thing you notice when you regain consciousness is the exhaustion that wracks through your frail body. The second thing is the man who lays next to you on your bed.
Matt.
He’s sleeping peacefully, chest moving up and down in slow breaths. You frown, unsure of why he’s here. The last thing you remember was you freaking out about the workload and having a panic attack. You must have fainted from the lack of air, you consider then immediately cringe. How embarrassing.
“What are you thinking about?” You jump at the sound of Matt’s deep voice, eyes shooting up to watch a small smile grace his face at your reaction. “Why are you here?” The question comes out ruder than you intended, but Matt’s smile doesn't waver.
“I was on patrol,” he begins, pulling you into his warm embrace, “and figured I’d stop by to check on you. I wasn’t going to come in, just listen-”
“-that’s not creepy at all-”
“-then I heard you panicking. Your heart was beating really fast and you were breathing really heavily. You were already passed out from lack of air by the time I was inside.” He pulls you in tighter like the moment still haunts him. You trace your fingertips gently down his bare arm, ear against his chest as you listen to his heartbeat.
“What happened, sweetheart?” He asks when it became clear you weren’t going to speak. You sigh. “I’ve been a little stressed lately. And I should’ve listened to my body but I didn’t. There’s just so much work and such little time. I can’t handle all of this workload.” The familiar bite of tears has you shoving your head in Matt’s neck, letting him hold you tightly and reassure you that everything will be okay.
“Why didn’t you tell me? We could have worked through your stress together,” He questions quietly and you shake your head in response. “You take the burden of everyone else’s problems, and still go out every night to face all the bad guys- I just didn’t want to burden you with my problems on top of all the rest.”
He pulls away and you try not to frown at the lack of contact. Slowly, his fingers move under your chin and compel you to look into his beautiful, unfocused eyes that sparkle in the city lights shining through your windows. “You are not a burden. Your problems are not a burden. I want to be here for you. I want you to tell me what’s going on in that smart little head of yours-” He flicks your forehead playfully before giving it a small kiss “-And I want you to know you can talk to me.”
You nod your head slowly, feeling like a child that’s just been scolded. “Okay.” He lays there in silence for a moment, seemingly contemplating his words before he speaks, “I think you need to talk to your boss,” you open your mouth to protest but he cuts you off with a gentle squeeze, “This amount of work isn’t healthy. I mean, why hasn’t the workload been separated and passed around to all of your co-workers? It’s fucking stupid if you ask me. She’s obviously taking advantage of your brilliance-”
“-Matt,” You cut him off with an amused smile. His eyes glint at the sound of your giggles as if that was his mission all along and he won first place.
“Yeah?”
“Thank you.”
“Don’t thank me. If anything I’m being selfish.” He grins cheekily, kissing your palm as it raises to cup his cheek. “And why, pray tell, are you being selfish?” Your smile is sly and knowing.
“Because I’m doing this to get my beautiful girl back and into my arms. Foggy isn’t as good company as you, y’know.” You giggle, holding him tightly as your mind settles on a decision. “I’ve missed you too.”
Tomorrow you’ll call your boss and ask for a lessened workload. But for now, you’re just going to lay in bed with the man you love dearly and let him hold you tightly.
