So as I mentioned before, Young Justice was interrupted by a whole “Sins of Youth” event where everyone’s ages were screwed up.
So on to the highlight reel, next up are The Teen Titans
Tumblr media
So the reason why I keep crossing out Teen is partly so people know what team this is and partly because they’re mostly not Teens anymore. Robin, Aqualad, Wonder Girl, and Speedy have long grown up into Nightwing, Tempest, Donna Troy, and… uh… so is he Red Arrow right now or Arsenal?
The point is they’re “The Titans” now.
Starfire and Cyborg joined as older teens/young adults so that’s probably why they get shifted from grown up to young teenagers.
And uh… I don’t know who these other people are. Based on context clues I now know the pale girl is “Argent” and she was probably a teenager turned adult, same as m…. Uh… Blue and Orange Nuclear Symbol Guy (No one has said his name throughout the entire Titans storyline, it was actually frustrating. All I know is that his name is Grant. Does he have a code name? Who the hell knows!).
Wait no, I think I found it!
Tumblr media
It’s… “Damage”.
Well Jesus Christ on a cracker, no wonder I missed it, I didn’t realize Damage was being used as a proper noun!
Tumblr media
So now you all get to suffer watching Cyborg being incapable of keeping it in his pants like I have.
Alongside Arsenal (I have my answer, I just missed it before) ogling this girl who, based on context clues, is actually a decent amount younger than should be ogled at.
Oh okay I’m just inattentive, Damage’s name comes up here too. I’m just an idiot.
Tumblr media
Apparently younger Starfire was a brat. I guess it comes with being a princess.
So apparently the reason why the original Teen Titans (sans Kid Flash) didn’t turn into kids is due to a prior adventure.
They inhaled a weird gas that was supposed to slow aging when they were younger. Kid Flash was outside doing crowd control so he didn’t inhale the stuff. I think the fact that the stuff was still processing and wasn’t meant to be taken in gas form is why they still grew up like normal.
But it also explains why they didn’t have their ages changed in the crossfire.
Tumblr media
No, that’s not Cyborg’s mom. So just take it in, enjoy the indignity of having to watch teen Cyborg flirt with a married woman. You can really tell he was an American football player.
Anyhow, beastmen attack an airport, fight and rescue scenes occur, Damage learns how confident and leader-like he feels as an adult, we learn nothing new about Argent, the Titans find out they have MORE beast guys to deal with, the titans whine about their latest victory
Tumblr media
They find out they have MORE beastmen to deal with,
Tumblr media
and finally,
Tumblr media
We see Contessa (mastermind behind this whole Sins of Youth Incident) talk to this red guy.
We never see him again for this entire event. Presumably he returns in a Titans comic.

Thinking about Nightwing/Batgirl vs Nightwing/Starfire and my hot take is that Dick and Kory should be endgame because Dick and Babarba is kind of incestuous.
Not in the sense of it being “icky”, but in the sense of it not allowing the Bat-family to grow and branch out and limiting it’s genetic diversity, in a manner of speaking.
Like, there’s already so many Batman proteges all trading around the same three or four code names. Poor Tim even had Stephanie and Damian calling themselves “Robin” when he wasn’t even dead or retired from the role. Stephanie had to go back to being “Spoiler” so Barbara could be Batgirl again. Jason tried to be Nightwing when the writers were just considering killing Dick off and then a bunch of randos tried to make it a collective moniker for a team. Dick left Gotham and became Nightwing to get out of Batman’s shadow but then he ends up having to take on the role of Batman while he’s Comic Book Dead. He’s supposed to live in Bludhaven but he’s constantly getting dragged back to Gotham to help Batman with one thing or another. The Batman writers even made Dick break-up with Starfire because him being preoccupied with the Teen Titans meant he wasn’t available for them to use in Batman stories, which kinda misses the entire point of having him outgrow the sidekick role and leave Batman in the first place.
So I feel like if you have Dick and Barbara get together, it’s just continuing to tie Dick down to the Bat-family and preventing him from spreading his wings. You know if they have kids together someday the boy(s) are gonna be another Robin/Nightwing/Batman and the girl(s) are gonna be another Batgirl/Batwoman/Oracle and they’re always going to be defined as Batman’s grandkids, Batman’s proteges, his successors, his legacy.
With Dick and Kory you don’t have to keep up the perpetual cycle of Batman getting a new protege who looks up to him at first and then eventually figures out how miserable he is and how poorly he’s coping with his trauma and realizes that they don’t want to be like him. You can tell new stories that go beyond the scope of Gotham. You can have stories that deal with the ramifications of Dick marrying an alien princess and technically being the prince consort of Tamaran and their kids being heir to the throne. You could do something really interesting with the idea of them having a biracial child and wanting them to be connected to the cultures of both parents’ home planets. Even if the kid does end up becoming another Batman protege, at least they’d be bringing something new to the table by being the first Bat-kid with actual superpowers.
I also think it’d be more interesting for Barbara to get a love-interest outside the Bat-family as well. Maybe even follow Dick’s lead and retire from the Batgirl role, pass it back to Stephanie or Cass or some new girl and either go back to being Oracle or get a brand new identity and venture off to a new city. Go solo and do her own thing her own way, not as a Batman sidekick.
Actually, you know if she did go solo and got her very own rogues gallery that would open up opportunities for her to have some sexual tension with a hot villain. Bruce has Talia and Selina. Terry had Ace. Nightwing has basically every woman good or evil. Let Barbara have something special with a hot bad boy.
I don’t dislike Dick/Barbara as ship, but I think there’s something kind of sweet and wholesome about them just being two people who used to date and are now best friends who love each other like siblings and I think it’s better for both characters if it stays that way.

Special Mission
Friday evening finds Raven sprawled on the floor of one of the empty rooms in the Titans Tower. Dick had given them permission to convert one of the rooms into a hang out spot since it wasn’t being used for anything else, and tonight the female Titans joined forces with a little help from the guys, to transform it in the biggest, softest, ultra-cozy pillow fort in existence. Tonight was an special occasion. Mar’i was staying over tonight for the first time.
There’s a mountain of pillows, a few bean bag chairs, and soft blankets in light colors covering every inch of the floor. A couple board games are stacked to the side, such as: Chutes and ladders, Race to the treasure, The floor is lava, which isn’t practical if you are playing with a speedster, half-kryptonians and other meta humans, if you asked Rose or Tim. Not too far from there is a television and gaming system Jon and Beast Boy set up. Gar brought some games Mar’i enjoyed last time she visited.
There are a couple of bedsheets hung overhead to give off the effect of a tent, soft fairy lights in pastel colors strung along the edges with adjustable brightness, illuminating the enclosed space. It was Rose’s brilliant idea. The new Titan member claimed to be not good dealing with children but proved to have a gift for decorating.
As soon as Raven stepped inside the room, she thought it definitely contrasted if compared with her room, designed around a dark colors palette. She was completely positive the little girl would like it though. Truth be told Raven was tired and wanted nothing but wrap a blanket around herself and sleep for the next two days. The only thing keeping her from doing it was just little Mar’i standing close to her and looking at everything with wide dreamy eyes, her bare toes wiggling into the softness of blankets. She let out a high-pitched, girlish giggle. The mission tonight was to make certain Mar’i was entertained and safe her first night away from her parents. Piece of cake.
The half-alien girl liked soft and cute things, Raven has noticed. It’s not hard to when she had spent the entire time running her little tanned hands through the fluffy blanket she had been given, wrapping it tightly around herself, calling herself a purrito proudly, needless to explain it was something Beast Boy had taught her.
It was rather enchantingly adorable Raven admitted, a smile curving her lips, meanwhile Donna was snapped a couple of pictures to send to Jon, who immediately replied with endless crying emoticons, unfortunately he was away on a mission with Damian. Quickly Jon sent a text saying they’d probably be home after dinner. Raven was sure Jon showed the picture to his partner, so Robin made proper arrangements to make sure he was at the Tower before his niece’s bedtime. Damian would never acknowledge it, but he secretly relished Mar’i’s attention and adoration.
Mar’i isn’t looking too happy now, she’s looking around as if searching for something or someone, and Raven wonders what went wrong. She replayed the events of the day. Rose entirely disregarded the planned, detailed schedule Robin left for Mar’i’s Grayson visit, declaring it was bullshit and it was time to be spontaneous and have some fun. They all agreed.
They played some of the board games, setting some elementary unbreakable rules, no cheating or using powers. Donna braided the girl’s long dark hair into something overcomplicated but cute. Karen had suggested to watch Netflix, the platform contained a variety of shows appropriate for children. At the end Mar’i had chosen to watch an old cartoon called Adventure Time, that had all of them looking attentively at the television with the same rapt attention all five year olds have, Donna was even gasping and cooing along with Mar’i.
Raven had zero experience babysitting children. They did save children on daily basis, citizens, not her friend’s children. The interaction was limited, this was different to a whole new level. The first time Kori and Dick brought toddler Mar’i, Raven was a bundle of nerves. Thankfully Kori patiently taught her everything she needed to know to look after a child.
And because she’s a organized person, who is little by little becoming a part-time babysitter apparently, she’s fully aware of the the importance of keeping to a schedule as closely as possible. It was also something Damian had repeatedly reminded all of them.
They’re halfway the second season, waiting for the girl to wind down before bed with little success. Raven immediately noticed she wanted something so she patted the little girl’s back, soothing her anxiety away.
“Is there anything you want, Mar’i?” Raven asked in a whisper.
Little Mar’i looked at Raven with teary eyes, tugging her shirt down. “Mar‘i wants Dami.” Oh it made sense. She was looking for a familiar face. Someone that reminded her of his father. Family.
The little girl clung to Raven, clutching onto the fabric of her shirt, she was burying his face in her chest. She obviously missed her parents. But Damian was on the mission with Jon, she doubted they would be back before dinner.
Raven chewed on her lower lip and tries to explain the situation to the five year old. “Damian is away fighting bad guys, like your dad but he will be back after dinner.”
The girl shyly rose her head, the slightest hint of hope sparking in her eyes. “He’ll be back? Really?”
“He promised and Damian always keeps his promises, right?” She smiles warmly at The little half-alien. Thinking of way to stall time before Damian and Jon get home.
Mar’i shook her head, she was wearing a pink dinosaur onesie, curled up on herself, hands in loose fists pressed to her chest, and an apprehensive little frown on her face. “But Mar‘i wants Dami now.”
Raven needs a workable emergency plan. Mar’i hadn’t shown signs of Starfire’s powers but she couldn’t risk upsetting a five year old and unintentionally awake them. This called for backup, a momentary distraction.
Hey Mar’i, would you like to play with someone else?” Raven asked gently, and the girl chewed on her lip and looked down and away. “Do you want me to call Conner?” The Titans pushed and it’s worth it, Mar’i’s head snapped back up to her, glowing green eyes wide with hope, before she looks away again. “I want to play with flyboy.”
“I already texted him. He’ll be here any mi-“ Rose waved her phone at them with a pleased smile on her face only to be abruptly interrupted before Faye could finish speaking.
The door to the room slammed open, making them all jump and jerk their heads towards it. Raven is surprised but already has her shield up, protecting Mar’i who is behind her, her heart hammering in her throat. It took her thirty seconds to recognize the bold invaders.
“What’s wrong with Mar’i? Rose said it was a red code.” Conner urgently demanded, standing in the doorway, a completely destroyed door beyond repair next to him, his electric blue eyes shifting around wildly as if looking for a threat, body braced in a battle stance. “Dude, You didn’t have to destroy the door.” Beast boy appeared, an annoyed expression on his face.
Raven blinks several times, recovering from the shock faster than everyone else, processing Conner’s words. Red code. She gave Rose a reproachful glance.
“What? Could have been one.” Rose said indignantly, and shrugged uninterested. “She wants to play with you, Supernerd.”
“Oh. That’s the emergency?” Conner said in surprise, and straightened up, his face embarrassed, turning red. He shifted a little in place, looking away from them, rubbing at the back of his neck self-consciously. “Um. Sorry for barging in like that...and breaking the door.”
“Well prepare for trouble.” Gar said with a wide smug smirk on his green face, standing next to Conner, elbowing his partner’s side. “And make it double.” Conner mutters playfully. Well, at least the dynamic duo would keep Mar’i entertained buying them time.
Karen broke the tension by laughing. “Damn Kon-El, that was faster than I expected.“ The rest of them started laughing a little too to shake off the nervous energy in the room. It’s not the first time Conner jumps to action and damages the building, but it’s kind of unsettling to have the intensity of Conner usually reserved for criminals and other threats turned on them. Conner kept apologizing nonstop until he locked eyes with Mar’i.
“Do you like the Superheroes, Mar’i?” Conner said smiling at her and instantly wanted to smack himself, of course the kid liked them, her parents were heroes and the rest of her family. He was still getting used to interaction with children. What would Clark do?
The small girl nodded enthusiastically in reply. “Mar’i likes Titans. I’m going to be like mommy and daddy!” She exclaimed, bounding in excitement. Well, at least Conner had managed to break the shell.
He climbs over the mountain of pillows and blankets and sits down on Mar’i’s other side, and the girl immediately scoots a little closer to him, gripping the hem of his baggy shirt, which has Superman’s distinctive Symbol printed across the chest. Conner instinctually put a hand down on the floor behind her back, giving her more space to press against his side. “Why don’t you tell me what you did with the girls today and after Gar will let you ride him while he’s in his dinosaur form.”
“Mar’i watched Totoro and Adventure time and played Race treasure.“ She spoke struggling with the difficult words and looked up at Kon-El, her eyes shimmering with eagerness and excitement.
“Hey! Don’t talk for others.” beast boy complained, looking at him with squinted eyes.
“Come on, BB. Do it for Mar’i.” The little alien approached Gar, opening her arms for a hug. Looking at him with expectant green eyes. “Dactyl.” She kept muttering the word over and over, tugging at Gar’s pants insistently. Gar’s lips turned up ever so slightly, slowly. He looked at her with unsure eyes, and it compelled her to offer a sunny charming smile. When she did beast boy’s face softened, and his shoulders relaxed as he sighed in defeat. “Pterodactyl got it.” He shape-shifted into the flying dinosaur.
They spent around an hour playing ‘catch me’, Mar’i sitting on Gar’s back, Conner flying around the room carefully not to destroy anything else. After ten minutes playing, Donna joined following Raven and the rest of the girls. It was their only chance to act like children, the childhood some never had the opportunity to experience, letting it loose, enjoying at their hearts content. Mar’i was truly a blessing. They decide to take a break when Raven noticed her phone is vibrating. She automatically answered.
“Robin here. Mission was a success. No damage or casualties to report.” Damian said quietly into the phone in his ear, observing the traffic slither along below. “What is the status?” Damian asked tentatively. Part of him was concerned what could happen if he left the Titans looking after Mar’i while he was away. He didn’t doubt Raven was skilled and intelligent, capable of handling the situation. Perhaps he was too alarmed for nothing.
“Under control. We are about to have dinner. Mar’i did ask for you though.” Raven whispered faintly, chewing in her cheek.
Damian took a shaky breath and didn’t hesitate to reply “I’ll let Jon know we are leaving right away. You’re in charge, Raven.” There’s a long silence before Raven realizes Damian hung up. She ran her fingers through her hair. Nothing could Damian Wayne. “It’s time for dinner everyone.” She announced loudly, quickly pulling her attention back to Mar’i.
Everyoone walks towards the kitchen and discussing what they would like to have for dinner: Gar and Conner pizza and she heard Mar’i mention pancakes and mustard.
~~~
That night, dinner was fun. After a few minutes, everyone’s chatting cheerfully, Conner loosened up enough to joke around ever so slightly. He was cautious still, of course, but so was Raven, watching closely Mar’i, she was her responsibility. She seemed to be comfortable with all the Titans. Conner warmed her dinner with his heat vision, making her look in awe. Raven scolded him saying it wasn’t necessary to and it was dangerous. Everyone else laughed merrily. Conner didn’t speak too loud like some of the others, and he wasn’t intimidating, like Damian. There were only few people who could see through Damian’s tough facade. Raven liked his gentle and kindhearted soul. She was sure Mar’i could see them too. When they are almost finish they heard the sound of footsteps approaching. And they were home.
“Where is Mar-Mar? Uncle Jon is here.” A high-pitched voice resonated in the Tower. Followed by a ‘shut your mouth, Kent. You aren’t her uncle.’ Mar’i tilted her head curiously.
"Dami here?" The girl asked, bouncing a little. She cheered when Raven nodded, smiling, thoughts of her uncle Dami whereabouts disappearing from her mind as he walked in, picking her up carefully, she wrapped her small arms round his neck and buried her face in his chest. “Dami.”
“I am here Mar’i.” Damian pats her back affectionately, placing her right on his lap. Damian promised to read her stories until she fell asleep. Jon stood beside him, claiming it was her turn to play with Mar-Mar, and how unfair Damian was being to him, but Damian refused to let go. He had a promise to fulfill and he kept his word.
~~~
It’s dark and comfortable. Raven delighted nights like these the most, when everything feels quiet and unhurried, no drama to deal with. When she can lay down with Damian and just breath, taking comfort in each other’s presence without the need to fill the silence with conversation. It was a much needed break after a long day. Damian for someone who's so tightly packed with muscle, his solid chest, makes an excellent pillow, she decided. A pillow who was currently running his hands through her dark hair. “Did you miss me?” Raven asked teasingly.
“I’d rather be here enjoying your refreshening and warm company than Kent’s” Damian said smugly, voice already rough with sleep. The low sound rumbled through Raven and she finds her mind shutting down without her consent. They were both exhausted.
“It isn’t the same when you aren’t around.” She murmured quietly. Her eyes fluttered, body relaxing as tense muscle melts into jelly.
The door creaked and Damian half twists, lifting his face to look at the door, finding Mar’i in the doorway, standing there in her pajamas, looking unsure and a little scared. “Uhmm. Mar’i wants to sleep with Dami and Rae.” Raven immediately softens and moves making space for her.
“You wanna join us, Mar’i? Come here, it’s snuggle time.” Raven pats the bed, the gesture makes the girl realize it was a sign to get into bed with them.
She pulled the door shut behind her and quickly crawled on the bed, slowly wedging herself under Damian’s arm between Raven and Damian.
“Are you okay?” Damian asked worriedly, sitting up a little. Ready to jump to action if she needed anything. He learnt he couldn’t let his guard down not even when he was relaxing with his soon-to-be girlfriend.
“I couldn’t sleep. I want to watch tv.” Mar’i whispered, her eyes on Damian as if asking for permission. Damian nods approvingly.
“Anything special you want to watch?” Damian questioned, looking over at his niece, as he gets up to get his laptop, placing it in his lap, lifting an arm and putting it over Raven’s shoulders so she can lean back more comfortably and have that little extra space. Mar’i half turns and scoots into a more comfortable position, stretching her tiny legs. “Kiki’s delivery service.” She instantly answered with enthusiasm in her voice.
“Good choice.” Raven grabbed a blue blanket she brought from their new fort room, unfolding it over the three of them.
Mar’i watched the movie with undivided attention, eyelids slowly drooping as the movie flies by until she falls fully asleep pressed against Damian, who was breathing steadily, sleeping peacefully. She felt safe between Raven and Damian, protected, it reminded her of her parents’ warmth and love for her.
~~~
The next morning Damian wakes up to an empty bed. That was not what he excepted. He gets up slowly, mouth uncomfortably dry and with a dull headache from sleeping more than usual. He looked at his phone it read ‘9:00am.’ Tsk. He overslept that was strange but considering how hectic the last weeks has been. It was a possibility his body was suffering extreme fatigue.
Blinking blearily, he made his way downstairs, he stopped when he hears voices from the living room and debated to just say a quick greeting to everyone on his way to the kitchen, or focus on his objective, Raven and Mar’i, but startlingly he gets caught with his mouth half open to speak at the scene in front of him.
“Why is my precious niece floating on a broom?” Damian asked skeptically, not sure of it was a dream or his mind was hallucinating. He finally rubbed the tiredness out of his penetrating keen eyes, watching as Mar’i weightlessly sat on a worn broom, both hands wrapped tightly around it and smiling widely, excitement in her growing green eyes. Raven’s has one hand on the broom, controlling it. So it was real. He reason if she was with Raven she was safe.
“I am a witch like Rae.” She squealed breathlessly.
“Mar’i, I’m not.” Raven shuts her mouth, sighing softly. “You’re a witch. Yes.” She had no idea how Dick and Kori had the energy to deal with the unstoppable hurricane Mar’i Grayson. She supposed it was something she’d find out one day, she told herself. Her violet eyes glancing up to Damian for a second.
cystar tho (headcanons)
imagine
cyborg and starfire are the cuddliest couple ever. the PDA is incredible. star will perch on his shoulders like he’s a climbing post/bird perch and generally just drape herself all over him bc he’s got a lot of surface area and she wants comfy. and cy will just grab her out of midair for huggles before letting her float away again like a balloon headed straight for the atmosphere. star will float higher when she wants to look over his shoulder at something (bc hes the only titan taller than her) and sometimes cy will just reach up and touch her waist and lead her around in the air like that while they chat
the other titans support them, but are simultaneously disgusted by the excessive amount of PDA. cy sometimes milks star’s affection to troll everyone, especially at the breakfast table. “hey star i havent had my morning kiss today” “oh apologies” “do that long tongue thingy again babe” “if you two dont let me eat my waffles in peace for just ONE morning i will open a portal to the seventh circle of hell and chuck the both of you inside”
star is living for the unabashed affection bc cyborg has no qualms about being proud boyfriend in public. like he’ll wrap an arm around her and go “hey star’s my girlfriend :)” and the grocery store clerk’s like “we know, that’ll be $15.99″ and star’s just beaming, holding the plastic bags full of snacks and unorthodox food combinations
if cy’s generous with the lovin wait till you see star lmao. “you are looking most beautiful today!” she keeps saying shit literally no one else will say, either (possibly) coz of the robot thing or just coz starfire’s being starfire, and cyborg’s just like *clutches_chest.jpeg* because she a lil weirdo but she makes him feel normal and appreciated and that he’s great the way he is, that he’s desired even if a lot of him isn’t organic anymore. like yes!! my boyfriend is comprised of 80% robotic parts!! he is extremely strong and the “cool”!!! is he not absolutely wonderful???
ok but starfire can almost never get enough touching, and cyborg’s just like aight *picks her up and carries her around on his arm for an hour* and she’ll just be giddy the entire time
Tumblr media
more under the cut
star doesnt have a lot of preconceived notions of what a normal human relationship is, outside of things she sees on TV and robin’s incomprehensible push-pulling over the years. so she doesn’t care one bit about the fact that she’s cuddling a robot. she’d figured starting a relationship with anyone on earth would be something different for her regardless– so a lot of the things cyborg used to think a partner would find problems with, end up not happening because man, this alien chick. “may i lay together with you in your bed?” “girl are you saying you wanna sleep while standing up?? on my charging port???? surrounded by 3478012 cables and wires?????” “is there no room? then may i sleep on the floor?” she just wants to be with him
heck more bed shenanigans would involve like, cyborg awkwardly trying to lie down on star’s bed, and it feels weird coz he hasn’t slept in a real bed for years and while it feels nice he’s kinda sinking into the mattress and he’s self-conscious about leaving a dent in the frame?? or like rolling over at night and squashing star which would be awkward coz he’s more than a little heavy?? then star hops in and cuddles close and is all like shhhhhhhhh slep time
silkie is usually very happy about cyborg’s presence in star’s room, if only because he can gnaw on cy’s legs while they sleep. cy begins to think it’s also revenge since there’s a lot less space on the bed with himself in it, and silkie struggles to find room near starfire to sleep at night. they eventually just get a bigger bed. silkie is a lot less stressed– but cyborg still wakes up with chew marks in his legs
if either of them are too tired from a battle that day, the other will carry them to bed. BB laughed his ass off the first time he saw starfire princess carrying cy to his room (star’s perfectly capable of carrying his weight but her arms aren’t necessarily long enough to hold onto him properly, making it a little cumbersome and awkward), but cy just tiredly gives B the finger
cy will talk to star in awkward broken tamaranian and she’ll get all giggly. everyone else assumes it’s cute flirting, but he’s actually whispering dirty, raunchy shit. that she taught him. and she continues to teach him tamaranian, occasionally dropping new words while otherwise speaking english, and waiting for him to ask about what they mean.
cy will sometimes smack star’s ass and then run for his life before she can return the favor, because he always ends up with an overly-enthusiastic handprint-shaped dent in his ass. it’s a terrifying game of tag. BB will chase them chasing each other with a camera to add to his album of “cyborg’s dented ass” photos that he shares with the whole titans network
cy teaches star about the niches in earth/american culture, the kinds of things that are a little harder to learn about on your own, or things she otherwise wouldn’t have had a reason to learn. he tells her about old american tv shows and explains obscure slang words and how to make telemarketers hang up first and what the contra code is and why he mashes it in every time he boots up a new video game. it’s a crash course mix of useless trivia and miscellaneous culture that makes star’s head spin– but she’s excited about learning all the same, the power of just knowing more makes her feel more comfortable on a planet where she is always a foreigner
it’s kinda why star adores all the different nicknames cy has for her like “fly girl” “baby doll” etc because it makes her feel “in” coz she gets all these cool nicks of names like other earth people!! she fits in!!!! and he’ll say it so fondly it makes her blush half the time. cy definitely notices and thinks its super cute at how excited she gets over pet names. she tries to nickname him back at one point but it felt awkward and she struggled to come up with them, and cy reassured her that he liked her saying out his name anyway, its cool. just be yourself babey
cy loves teaching star things in general, he’s patient and she’s always an eager student. he once took a few hours showing her how to play video games and while she didn’t really take to it, she did learn how to not break the controller whenever her virtual car’s about to crash into the divider (she still shrieks when it happens though)
initially, star is a bit nervous about touching some of cyborg’s robot parts like the implants and consoles coz she’s not sure how to deal with them? alien tech is one thing and earth tech is another, and then there’s the advanced shit that made up cyborg’s body and literally keeps him alive. she’s petrified at the thought of accidentally breaking something like what if she presses the button that turns off his lungs???????? and cy is like why the fuck would i have a button to turn off my lungs?? so one day cy just sits her down so she’s leaning back against his chest, and he looks over her shoulder as he shows her how to navigate his arm console. press this button and choose this option, no the screen wont break even if you press hard, dont use the browser to download malware on my arm like BB did, etc. the ui’s pretty intuitive and star gets it pretty quickly, then she gets all excited. cy teaches her about all the maintenance he does on his body and how his charger works and all that shit and she like oooooo
“if the t-car is your baby, does this mean i am its mother? cyborg does she like me enough? should i assist in changing her oil? *panicking* WILL SHE ACCEPT ME AS HER ADOPTED K’NORFKA?!”
(the t-car is a sassy one, easily jealous and protective– but ultimately, she does approve of starfire, if only just barely)
they spend a lot of time in the garage together. whether cy’s fussing with the t-car or putting together a new gadget, star’s a helpful assistant when it comes to welding or heavy lifting. and while she doesn’t necessarily get programming, she still helps cy with all the calculations and math involved in it; the concept of physics as she has encountered on earth is primitive compared to tamaran, and cy will often challenge her to crack a tough equation before his computer can. while the computer usually gets a result first, star will just explain that its answer was wrong in the large scheme of things, before she starts going in depth into that nerdy science shit to find a more effective way to wire whatever project they’re working on and cy’s just like  ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ heart eyes ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ at how smart she is
they fucking love food. while all the titans are hanging out in the common room, star and cy spend an inordinate amount of time in the kitchen. star will literally eat anything, at any time, and cy would go like “yo star want a sub??” and shes like “YES I WOULD LOVE THE EDIBLE SUBMARINES” and they go make the tallest sub ever and then Eat it
they just cook together a lot, one of them being head chef for the hour and the other being the kitchen assistant. cy’s usually in the lead when they’re making food for the other titans (to prevent food poisoning), and star is happy to learn new recipes that aren’t lethal to her friends– that, and licking all the mixing bowls clean. cy purposely gets sauce etc on his face so that star will see and lick it off too. then star will very unsubtly smear food on her face so that cy will wipe it off with his finger and then things get handsy. (they’re both aware it’s a game, but they pretend like they don’t.)
cy gets them matching aprons and a tiny chef hat for star. she asks him why it’s so tiny or even necessary but he just thinks its cute af on her lol
it helps cy’s ego when star will also eat literally anything he puts in front of her while enjoying it unironically. of course, cy quickly learns that starfire’s favorite “earth” foods are things that most people wouldn’t consider food at all, so while he’ll prepare Real Food for himself, he had to start a new custom cookbook for the random combinations of ingredients that starfire likes to ingest. he’s torn between feeling like his chef skills go to waste on her, or being proud at how good he’s become at figuring out the kinds of food combos she likes based on the flavors and consistencies she’s inclined to. but ultimately she’s just so cute and happy when she smiles at the taste of m&ms on raw steak that cyborg’s just like ahh. fine.
cyborg: *sighs while writing* “edamame in a cherry-chocolate reduction: get a handful of fresh edamame, washing is optional, pour hershey’s chocolate sauce all over it, add cherries but don’t remove the pits or the stems, sprinkle in some drops of 7up, then cover that shit in mustard. stick it all in the microwave for 1 minute, doesn’t really matter what temperature? prep time: 3 and a half minutes. the fuck did i just write”
star: *wolfs down that edamame shit like its the best goddamn thing ever*
raven:
meanwhile, while cy can’t stomach star’s tamaranean food, he does go out of his way to learn how to prepare the stuff himself, for whenever star’s sick or feeling down. the nostalgic taste of home tends to help her feel better. the bowls of wustlepus might keep trying to strangle him, but hey, cy can handle it
cy used to think we was master of stuffing his face, but he quickly found out that you do not challenge an alien with 9 stomachs to an eating competition and expect to win. it’s still fun, of course, to pick a restaurant and watch her slowly but surely put away food with a grace that cy doesn’t (care to) have. robin and BB cheer will them on, raven is disgusted but plays referee anyway (even though it’s not like the result ever changes)
“are the table manners required for today’s duel of excessive food consumption?” star will ask cy innocently, but she’d be smiling a lil smugly because she knows she’s gonna win like always
(at some point, the restaurant manager will start eyeing them nervously from the doorway of the staff room, unsure about whether to ask the titans to leave before they run the kitchen dry, or to take advantage of the publicity.)
cy and star are a couple that isn’t inclined to subtle about anything. that means smooching all the time. mwah noises. flirting. glomps. yelling at shit together for fun– cy just expresses himself loudly, while shouting at each other is a form of affection on tamaran. they’ll sometimes wrestle, sometimes arm wrestling and sometimes all out full-body on the floor (actual wrestling tho, not a innuendo; star usually wins). they keep denting walls and furniture with their messing around and the other titans are like /(e_e)\ *passing out earplugs* and at some point robin is like guys… just… keep it in your rooms please
but being loud isn’t exclusive to daytime. nobody fucking knows how the hell an alien and a robot get it on, but based on all the god damn noise at night, they’ve apparently figured something out. maybe more than one something. it is a mystery
“hey, star… ever heard of a vibrator?”
most of their making out happens in the gym tho, let’s be real. they’ve been checking each other out for years in there. now they just get frisky after (or during, or before) a workout, culminating in yet another “workout”. they never lock the door, and after enough incidents the other titans just end up boycotting the gym entirely in lieu of the other training room
with the added privacy, star opts to work out in the gym without a top on. or a bra. then she heads for the treadmill
“you never wear clothing, cyborg, so why should i?”
cyborg keeps dropping his weights on himself and just ends up covered in dents, two mangled prosthetic legs, and having done no training at all
they’re such a peppy excited pair that sometimes things can get a bit too wild. there’s a pile in the back of cy’s room made up solely of dented/crushed/melted/ripped arm and leg prosthetics, all damaged because cy was busy pampering his superpowered alien gf a lil too much. starfire feels super bad but cy is like, he has to fix his limbs after a lot of battles anyway, it’s no big deal. he also hasn’t bothered to suggest a workaround yet because watching her lose control is hot (and maybe getting his hand melted is kinda kinky)
they sometimes troll the other titans– usually robin– by whispering in tamaranian behind them and snickering, pretending like they’re talking about them. robin used to be extra miffed by this, but after learning that cy’s tamaranian is actually still shit enough that he has yet to learn to string together a proper sentence longer than 3 words, robin knows they’re just fucking around with him. at one point robin turns around on the couch and throws some tamaranian right back at them and cyborg’s like :O what the fuck? what the fuck?? and star’s like yeah actually robin asked me to teach him tamaranian too. and robin’s like :) and cy is grumpy he can’t antagonize him with it anymore (and that it’s not exclusively his and star’s code language anymore, but really, you can’t own a language like that)
star likes to cart cy around while flying, but he’s just so bulky that he doesnt look all graceful and shit like robin; he just looks kinda goofy dangling in the air with her holding him under the arms. but even if he felt a little self-conscious, he forgets it quickly when she lets him skim the ocean with his feet or take him up over the clouds– he’d thought he lost everything with the accident that left him a robot, but getting to fly like this is something he never could’ve even dreamed of even when he was all human. like. this must be what it actually means to be living. everything happens for a reason
cy gets a UV lamp installed in his body just in case they get stuck somewhere and there’s no sunlight for star, he can’t replace the sun but it might help
he also turns his heaters up a bit when they’re cuddling coz he knows she likes warmth, as long as he’s not running the risk of overheating his system, but his metal parts can be cold to the touch and while she doesnt mind it at all he just wants her to be cozy….
cy’s like the only titan taller than star, so she usually floats to be eye level with him. he big and bulky and strong and he reminds her of galfore, and that’s part of why she always felt protected and safe around him. not to mention star’s been getting taller than most earth people her age; she sometimes feels like a tall poppy, sticking out of the crowd too much. so she lowkey enjoys being smol for once compared to cyborg, especially if she ever feels like hiding behind him, or being carried by him, the comfort of a sort of bodyguard that she doesn’t necessarily need but is there if she wants
i keep bringing this up but star sitting on cyborg’s shoulders/arms like. the result is this tall stack of a couple that towers over all the other titans– then like everyone will be chilling on the couch when they hear making out noises from above and they look up and its just star floating around cyborg’s head as they smooch and everyone’s like -_-
all the meme fun aside, they’re always able to confide in each other whenever they’re upset. they’ll sit together in silence and just lean on each other or hug and wait for someone to spill. if (when) it comes down to “will i ever fit in?”, because that kinda worry never completely goes away, they’ll be reassured that they know the few places they’ll always be accepted– and that’s in the titans, or in the unconventional relationship between a half robot and an alien nuclear bomb
star likes being around cy coz he’s so sturdy, in more ways than one– he’s strong enough to tank stuff so it’s safer to roughhouse with him. she loves being able to give the biggest of hugs without worrying too much about crushing a ribcage (earthlings and their Fragile Little Bones!)
cy loves how small star is compared to him bc shes fun to pick up or pluck from the air and cuddle ♥ and she’s so warm, just radiating heat both literally and metaphorically and she’s so full of life and heart, and cy’s once again reminded of what it really means to be human– by a goddamn alien, no less
they like to touch each other’s faces, just caressing n stuff like they do in “how long is forever” and the teen titans go comic #24, staring into each others eyes and shit and going all (uwu) they just love to touch each other okay even back when they were just friends!!!!!!!
HAVE I MENTIONED THE SMOOCHES. star will just kiss cy all over his face because its fun and she knows he likes it. then cy returns the favor, except with increasingly exaggerated kissing and nomming noises because it makes star laugh and blush like crazy. it’s horribly embarrassing for anyone else watching. star & cy are usually standing in the middle of the corridor by this point, and then robin was gonna head to his office, but once he sees the path is blocked– by this no less– just returns the way he came without a word
if anyone tries to make star feel uncomfortable for being alien or misunderstanding something, which does still happen sometimes, they’ll quickly find out they’ve got the goddamn terminator comin for their ass. or they’ll turn around and see 6 foot tall robot man with arms crossed and red eye glowing and he’ll be like (: hey there (:
star keeps leaving the garage with motor oil all over her face. none of the other titans knows how to address it, or if they even should, so they don’t
anyway theyre in love
robstar week 2019: day four
day four! hell yeah!! we’re about halfway done with robstar week! if you’ve been keeping up with my other prompts, @samdraws715 and i chose to collaborate on prompts this year where she drew the artwork above and i wrote a fic surrounding the art. i think it’s a pretty neat way to collaborate tbh :’) all art credit goes to her! overall, i like this prompt, but there’s some parts of dialogue that i’m kind of on the fence about. whatever, there’s some good fluffy robstar in it so i hope you all enjoy that!
Fever
“Aw dudes, no way! Why did it have to rain on the night I did my hair! Now it’s ruined!” Beast Boy complained as the titans stepped into OPS after a mission of fighting Dr. Light in the rain.
Raven watched Beast Boy and examined the wet green hair on his head. “Looks the same to me,” she said as she walked past him.
“Hey! It may look the same but hard work goes into my do every day!” The changeling explained as he put a hand to his hair and slicked it back. “I don’t know what I’d do without my good looks,” he said confidently. “Also, is it just me, or was the rain like, way cold?”
“Tell me about it,” Robin walked in squeezing the water from his cape. “It’s freezing,” he said shivering.
Cyborg walked into OPS next, feeling cheerful. “I’m glad we got home quickly, otherwise I would’ve had a lot more oiling to do for my robotic parts. I feel as good as ever!”
“Glad you’re feeling good, Cy, but I’m still soaked!” Beast Boy whined. “Luckily, the is a problem that can be easily fixed,” he smirked before morphing into a dog and shaking the water off his hairy coat, splashing water everywhere.
“Augh! Beast Boy!” Robin said as he shielded himself with his cape.
“Way to go, now the room’s all wet,” Raven said as she lowered her hood.
“Aw come on, it’s not that bad,” Beast Boy told them while morphing back to his normal form. “Besides, at least I’m dry! And it sounds to me like you guys need a movie night to cheer up!” Beast Boy said as he hurried to the glass cupboard under the television to find a movie for them to watch.
In that moment, Starfire came into the room holding a stack of towels. “Friends, would you like some towels to help you dry off?”
“No thanks, Star, I’m already dry,” Cyborg gave her a smile.
“Yeah, I’m good too, thanks Starfire.” Beast Boy said as he kept digging through the pile of movies they owned.
“Robin? Raven? Would you care for one?” Starfire asked them, holding out the pile.
“Actually, that doessound nice.” Raven took a towel and wrapped it around herself. “Thank you, Starfire,” she smiled.
“Yeah, thanks, Star.” Robin gave a warm smile at her in which she returned.
“Oh, dudes, we’ve got to watch this one!” Beast Boy said excitedly as he held up a movie. “We haven’t watched it in ages, plus, since when was the last time we watched a comedy?”
The titans got comfortable on the couch and put on the movie as the rain still continued to pour from outside. Everyone was laughing and having a good time except for Robin. Despite having the warm towel still wrapped around him he was still cold, and, quite frankly, a little tired. He tried to close his eyes for a few moments but the occasional shivers he’d get kept him from doing that. He wasn’t sure if it was just because of the usual cooler temperature of the OPS room but he ultimately decided to just sleep in his own room. He turned to Starfire who sat on his left. “Star,” he whispered.
“Hm?” Starfire turned her head in his direction.
“I think I’m just going to sleep for the rest of the night.”
“Oh? Are you tired?” She inquired.
“Yeah, very, and a little cold too.”
“Would you like me to go with you?”
“As much as I would like that, I think you should stay here.” Robin softly explained as he stroked the side of her arm. “I wouldn’t want the others to think we ditched them just so we could be together.”
“Hm, that is true. I can see how they might think that if we both left together.” Starfire paused for a second. “I will join you once we are done?”
Robin smiled and nodded. “Definitely,” he tilted her head slightly and captured her lips in a short kiss. He then glanced over to see the other three titans on his right side and made sure they weren’t looking to see him leave. He quietly got up and made his way to his room without any of the others noticing.
Once in his own space, Robin changed out of his damp uniform and into a loose t-shirt and shorts. He climbed into bed and wrapped himself up in the covers and blankets that lay on the bed. He felt much better and felt a lot warmer. Apparently, a good night’s sleep was all he needed.
The next morning, however, Robin felt even worse than before. He turned to his other side hoping to find Starfire there but she wasn’t in bed with him. He sighed. He hadn’t seen her since the previous night and even then he still didn’t feel a hundred percent.
His throat felt dry, so he reached for the glass of water he put by his side the night before and drank from it. He put the glass down after only a few sips, noting the uncomfortable feeling he had in his throat whenever he tried to swallow. He must’ve had a sore throat. “Great,”he thought. “just when things couldn’t get any worse.”Robin, only seeing it as a minor setback, put on a fresh set of uniform and headed out into OPS, continuing on with his morning.
Robin found the others in the OPS room just as he expected. It was just another typical morning for the team. He was about to go find a spot on the couch next to Cyborg and Beast Boy when Starfire approached him first. “Robin!” She said cheerfully. “Did you sleep well?”
Robin rubbed the back of his neck. “Yeah, kinda.” He then remembered the events of the previous night. “You didn’t come to sleep with me?”
“What?” Starfire said confused. “I did, however, you looked so peaceful sleeping I did not want to disturb you.”
“Huh. I don’t remember you being next to me at all last night.”
“Yo, Rob! Glad you’re finally awake after all this time. C’mon dude! I could use another partner!” Beast Boy piped up from the couch as he waved his controller in the air.
Robin smiled at Starfire before departing and made his way to the couch. He took a breath through his mouth and exhaled, feeling quite hot. He sat down next to Beast Boy who was eagerly waiting for him.
“Me and Cy are playing this round, but whoever wins, you’llbe versing him.” The changeling explained.
“You’re goin’ down, grass stain!” Cyborg told Beast Boy.
“I dunno Cy~” Beast Boy teased. “You lost the last three rounds and your chances here are looking pretty slim.It seems that the video game Gods are in favour of me for a change!” He said confidently.
“Yeah, yeah, less talk, more playing!” Cyborg interrupted his rambling.
Robin watched the two of them start their match with tired eyes. He didn’t understand why he felt so tired again, and the irritation he felt in his throat certainly didn’t help. Hoping the boys wouldn’t notice, Robin laid down on the side of the couch, trying to ignore the itching feeling in his throat.
“Robin! Robiiiinnn! Robin, wake up!”
Robin slowly opened his eyes, which stung badly. He rubbed them and saw Beast Boy and the others around him. “Where… am I…?”
“Uh, on the couch? Right where you were just a few moments ago?” Beast Boy told him, hoping it would jog his memory. “It’s literally only been five minutes.”
“Are you okay, Robin? You haven’t been acting like yourself all morning.” Cyborg asked.
Robin sat up, feeling drowsy. “Yeah… why?”
“You don’t seem fine.” Raven said. “your temperatures appear to be fluctuating.”
“W-What? What do you mean?”
“Hmm…” Cyborg began. “I think I’m picking up what you’re putting down, Rave.” He turned to Robin. “Close your eyes and breathe in.”
“Why?” Robin gave him a look.
“Just do it.” Cyborg groaned.
Rolling his eyes, Robin did what he was told, but he barely had time to do so before Cyborg shoved something into his mouth. Robin recoiled backwards and Cyborg took the object out of Robin’s mouth. “What was that for?!”
“It was just a thermometer.” Cyborg said as he looked down at the reading.
“But I’m not even sick!” Robin exclaimed.
Cyborg looked back up at Robin. “You’re right, you’re reallysick.” Cyborg said as he waved the thermometer in the air. “103 seems pretty high to me.”
“Let me see that.” Beast Boy took the thermometer from Cyborg to read it himself, with Raven and Starfire on either side of him. The changeling’s eyes widened. “Woah, that is high, dude! Are you sure you’re feeling okay?”
“For the last time, I’m fine. I hardly ever get sick.” Robin told the others before a short pause, followed by a small sneeze and sniffle which came from him. The other titans exchanged looks, obviously not believing him.
“How do you even suppose he got sick?” Cyborg asked. “Ya think it had something to do with the rain last night?”
“If you’re saying rain gets people sick, then I’m staying out of it.” Beast Boy exclaimed.
“Rain itself won’t get you sick, colder temperatures do.” Raven cut in. “Rain is just water, but colder temperatures can weaken the human immune system, which can cause people to get sick.”
“And it was cold last night…” Beast Boy said as he rubbed his chin.
“If he has a fever, it wouldn’t be a total surprise if he also has a sore throat, since body temperature also rise when it’s fighting an infection…” Raven continued.
“You guys know I’m still here, right?” Robin interrupted. “This doesn’t make any sense… how come I’ve never seen of you guys sick?”
“Maybe…” Cyborg started. “because they’re from another planet,” Cyborg pointed to Starfire and Raven. “he’s got a different genetic code,” he pointed to Beast Boy. “and I’m part robot. Basically, you’re the only one of all of us who’s fully human, which is why we’re immune to that stuff.”
“Lucky… I’d do anything to get better.” Robin groaned.
“Then it is a good thing you can get better.” Starfire said as she picked Robin up bridal style and held him in her arms.
“Star?! What are you doing?” Robin asked as she walked toward the doors leading out of the OPS room.
“We are going to get you better as soon as possible,” she said with determination.
“But I-“ Robin started as he looked back to where the other titans were standing.
“No buts, Robin.” Starfire interrupted him. “If you wish to get better, you must admit that you are sick and not resist on getting healthy.”
Robin didn’t know how to reply to that. “O-Okay…” was all he could say as he let Starfire carry him away to his room.
Once they arrived there with Robin back in his bed, he got under his covers once again and looked back up at Starfire. “I do feel better just lying down, but now what do I do?”
“You don’t need to do anything, beloved. Let me take care of you.” Starfire kissed the top of his head before departing, not giving enough time for Robin to reply in time.
“Wait! Seriously?” Was all Robin could say in time. A few short moments later she came back with at least three different blankets and pillows, which she handed to him.
“You might as well get comfortable, Robin, because you won’t be leaving this room for at least little while.” Starfire told him.
“So I’m just supposed to stay here until I get better? All by myself?” Robin asked as he laid out all the blankets on top of him.
“Of course not, I can stay with you for as long as you want.” She reassured him.
“Are you sure? I don’t want you to feel like you have to stay just because I’m sick…”
“You silly, you being sick is the reason I wantto stay.” Starfire said as she unfolded one of the blankets and placed it on top of him. “Now wait here for a moment, I will be back with something else.”
Robin watched her leave and was left by himself to think. He really wish he wasn’t feeling so crappy, but he was super grateful he had such a caring girlfriend who wanted to take care of him. He perked up a little when she returned with a box of tissues and a hot mug.
She placed down the tissues on the bed and held out the hot mug. “Here, drink this.”
“What is it?” Robin asked as he sat up a little.
“It’s herbal tea,” Starfire said. “Raven taught me how to make it. She said it’s good for illnesses like yours.”
Robin took the mug from Starfire and let it sit in his hands for a moment. He blew on it before taking a small sip and swallowed it, liking how the the warmth of the liquid soothed the back of his irritated throat. He took a few more sips in peaceful silence as Starfire watched contently. After the last sip, he lowered the mug and exhaled, obviously having enjoyed drinking the tea.
Starfire softly giggled at that. She always found her boyfriend to be undeniably cute doing little things that he didn’t pay much attention to, just the little quirks that made Robin his adorable self. “How does that feel?” Starfire said with a smile still on her face.
“Much better, thanks for that.”
“You are most welcome.” Starfire said. She then looked at Robin’s bed. “Could you move forward please?”
“Yeah, sure,” Robin said, thinking Starfire would add another pillow to the pile he already had which propped him up, but instead of a pillow, Starfire shifted onto his bed and ended up behind him, with him laying in her arms along with the pillows as well. He was surprised, and looked up at her from where his head rested on her chest. “I hope you do not mind me joining you.” Starfire said.
“No, it’s perfect, actually. I like this a lot…” Robin said as he let his head fall back, his eyes meeting with hers. “Thank you, Star, I really appreciate this. You didn’t have to do all this, seriously, I could’ve just done this all on my own, and you could’ve saved some time as well.”
“You are not wrong, Robin, however, you know how I like to spend any extra time I have with you, even if it is helping you recover from an illness.” Starfire told him. “I care about you deeply, and I would do anything for you, you know that.”
“Of course I do. I’d do the same thing for you too, even though you can’t really get sick.”
Starfire giggled. “No, not necessarily.” She reached down and ran her fingers through his messy black hair.
“But I would do anything for you too, you know that right?” Robin asked as her stared into her gleaming eyes.
“Yes, I do know,” Starfire had nearly chuckled as she laid a hand on Robin’s cheek, which he leaned his face into. “And I am glad to have someone who cares just as much for me as I do to them.”
“Me too, it feels nice to know that.” Robin said as Starfire continued to run her fingers through his thick hair. She did so in silence for a moment longer, absolutely loving the way Robin pushed into her touch. She knew he wanted more, and he knew she knew it as well.
“Feels good?” Starfire gave him a look as she watched his face as she continued.
“Mmm, very.” Robin nearly sighed. He took her hand that was on his cheek and kissed it twice before stroking it with his thumb. “My princess…” he said lazily. “I love you so much.”
She smiled and leaned forward, leaving a kiss to his forehead. “I love you too.”
The two of them continued to lay together in bed until eventually they both ended up falling asleep together, feeling happy to have each other, always.
Babe pls go off about TTG vs TT I would love it
caps is referring to this post i made a week ago; i made sure bc i’m kind of an illiterate dumdum who’s bad at math. @zitkaplushie and @aaawunder have also decided to endorse my absolute worst impulses on the matter of cartoons vs comics SO
what’s been on my mind lately is…not really a Big Discourse, it’s mostly just a pet peeve. and as a disclaimer i’d like to say that i firmly believe in interacting with fandom any way you want. i’m not the fandom police; that job sounds heinous.
but i gotta tell ya, it can get pretty frustrating trying to find good teen titans animated content that actually feels like it’s about teen titans animated. and so much of that comes down to people who insist on shoehorning comics canon into the show—especially the people who don’t like it that none of the characters refer to each other by “real name”, and think it’s a problem that they need to fix in their fanworks.
i vaguely referenced this type of thing briefly here, but people not treating the animated series as a completely different ‘verse with a completely different structure and continuity from any comics or previous animated shows is…baffling, to me. it takes me out of the enjoyment of a lot of fan content that people produce and then file under the animated show in the archives. and i wish it didn’t because i like enjoying things, surprisingly! but it does, and i think i know why.
uninhibited gushing about teen titans under the cut:
the cartoon makes for an excellent gateway series to the lesser-known aspects of the dc universe, but it also stands really well on its own. and part of the reason for that is that you don’t need to know any comics canon to enjoy the show—you don’t even need to be familiar with batman at all in order to understand and empathize with robin as a character. and i think one element of that is the fact that nobody refers to anyone by their “real names”, because as far as the show is concerned, their superhero names are their real names. being a superhero is their full-time job, and their hero lives and personal lives are one and the same.
so it kinda grinds my gears to read fanfic tagged specifically under the animated series where characters frequently refer to each other as ‘dick’, ‘gar’, ‘vic,’ and ‘kory’—and in some cases ‘rachel’ too—and consistently reference their backstories as a part of the expanded dc universe. do they do that in the comics and the animated movies and the live-action show? sure! and there’s nothing inherently wrong with it. but i’ve always liked the fact that they make a point of avoiding that in the cartoon, and to me it’s one of the things that sets the show apart. no one has a civilian identity—they’re teenagers, they look and talk and act like teenagers, but they fight villains full-time. that’s all. and it’s great!
while the cartoon is primarily focused on action, it still manages to communicate a lot of the mature aspects of the comics’ stories and characters without having to give them civilian identities. our understanding of cyborg, for example, isn’t made better by knowing that his birth name is ‘victor stone’. his struggle to accept himself for who he is, both the human and the machine, is still core to his character arc, and it shines through whether you know the backstory or not.
disabled kids watch cyborg and they don’t need to know about silas stone and STAR Labs; they’re looking at his cybernetics as prosthetic limbs and saying “hey! he’s just like me!”. that’s the kind of thing that really matters, and that’s part of what makes the show so special to me.
on a practical level, there’s a reason starfire and raven don’t go by their “real names”—because starfire and raven are their real names. in kory’s pre-crisis comics debut, “starfire” was a code name originally born out of the effects of her energy bolts (she didn’t actually do the language kiss until about a week after they rescued her from the gordanians, so they needed to call her something). but in the cartoon, starfire is to koriand’r as john is to giovanni—it’s the english translation of her name. and raven is a half demon raised in an alternate dimension populated by monks; “rachel roth” has only ever been a pseudonym she uses to get around when she has to. it’s only robin, cyborg, and beast boy that even have secret identities to begin with in the cartoon, and it’s not that much of a reach to argue that they’re choosing to eschew those old names to better reflect who they’ve chosen to be.
and i think that last bit especially is why it bugs me that people have argued that “they’re supposed to be friends but they don’t trust each other enough to tell each other their backstories!”. because to me, it’s a lot more compelling that they trust each other enough to not need to know that information. “she’s our friend,” robin says about raven. “what more do we need to know?”. what they’re acknowledging there, to me, is that it doesn’t really matter where you’ve been or what you were born to do; it’s about who you choose to be now. and i love that, the respect of choice. having the characters refer to each other by birth name just because it’s their birth name, as if a birth name is inherently more valid and intimate, kind of undermines that to me.
teen titans works as well as it does, and still holds up almost two decades later, because it is, at its core, a show about teenage superheroes as found family that just happens to be a dc property. i’m so much more interested in fan content that plays by those rules—treating the comics canon as isolated wink-and-nudge kind of stuff, because it’s more interested in how the characters have chosen to present themselves than in making them abide by Comics Rules. again, i’m not out to be the Content Police to tell you how to enjoy a kids’ show, but it would be nice if content tagged under the animated show was actually about the animated show instead of cramming in comics canon when there are already communities and tags for comics canon. just let the cartoon be the cartoon.
So I found Titans: Burning Rage at the comic shop today. Mixed feelings abound.
{Heads up, because SPOILERS abound too.}
It's set in it's own continuity which draws bits and bobs from New 52 and preboot, but it's clearly meant to FEEL like you are watching an episode of the old Teen Titans cartoon. Except--of course--there's no Cyborg, because DC is determined to make him a Justice Leaguer... or a Doom Patrol member... or a solo hero... basically anything BUT a Titan these days. Everybody calls each other by their code names until you're halfway through the issue.
I'm kinda charmed by the levity of the opening with Beast Boy trying to circle everybody up for pizza. He and Raven have an exchange that is an odd mix between potentially meaningful stares and teasing repartee. Raven maintains a somewhat formal speech pattern, including calling people by their full names (which I am always a sucker for bc I love nods like that to 80's Wolfman Raven.)
So here's the thing. Up until half way trough, I'm not overthinking the name thing. I'm like, okay. DC is expecting maybe some younger/newer readers to pick this up... so they're using Rebirth costumes, but trying to draw people in with the simplicity of the ol' cartoon dynamic... which means Robin must be kind of an amalgam character?
Bc these are Dick Grayson's friends, but it's standard hat these days to give him a bo staff, and a costume, and even a logo that's super distinctive of Tim Drake, but they wouldn't make Tim Drake the leader of a team exclusively made up of his brother's friends...
Except they totally did.
Raven full-out calls him "Timothy", and it is even more firmly confirmed as Tim when the narration boxes switch to his POV. (It's also at this point that I'm noticing that there was no romantic tension between Starfire and Robin. Something I WOULD have expected given how much the comic was mirroring toon TT up until then.)
TBH, it doesn't really change the story they are telling. The story is just a simple introduction of H.I.V.E. and its lackey team fighting this continuity-hybrid Titans team. It's clearly done in such a way that people who liked the cartoon can get a nostalgia fix, and DC can get those people used to some comic status quo things like costumes and the Victor Stone thing.
But wow did it make my brain go off on a tangent of what the backstory of this AU roster would have to look like. Because the roster is Raven, Gar, Kory, and TIM DRAKE. It's a weird roster. But it could also be a fun one. ESPECIALLY if you actually used elements of Geoff John's run to play into their interaction.
Because if you did... then Tim is the youngest of them by a good stretch. Okay, that would mean Raven got de-aged at some point, but still. He would be the only actual teenager on the team. But he's also the leader. Why? Because Kory didn't feel like doing it, and it seemed to help Tim's self-esteem.
IDK. My brain is still playing with it.
Initially, I assumed it was a one-shot, but apparently there will be a following issue. I have decided that, yes, I WILL pick it up. The art's great and even though the story is kinda 'meh', the unique details of the world are sure to make me continue to entertain myself with possibilities long after I've set down the actual comic.
Homesick: Chapter 6
A huge thanks to @westernfan1 for beta reading this for me! You’re the man! I was NOT ready to write this chapter, but this is what I get for not writing out the story’s skeleton first.
Read it on AO3
Read it on Fanfiction.net
Cyborg hummed as he opened his arm, started the process of inputting the codes that would activate Raven's tracking device remotely. He paused before he pressed send, muling over it before he said anything. "Robin, they made us promise not to-"
"I don't care what we promised!" Robin swung his arm out, as if to be sure everyone was keeping their distance. "Raven's in trouble! I'm not just going to stand here! We're tracking them and that's final!" Cyborg shook his head, but activated Raven's tracker.
Beast Boy, who'd been still as stone by the puddle of dried blood, pressed off the ground to stand. Terra followed him, unsure that he could, properly. He brushed her hand off. "I'm with Robin. If Raven's hurt, I'm going to find her." Terra slid around in front of him.
"Beast Boy?"
He shook his head, and she would have said more, but she didn't, because his eyes told her all she needed to know. They were set, nearly primal, more mature than the Beast Boy she'd known, though just as determined as he'd always been. His fists clenched at his sides, and he stood taller than she remembered. He was looking at her, but she knew he wasn't seeing her. "I'm not losing her…"
Maybe she'd known, even when they'd had a thing, even when he'd spent his time drooling over her at training sessions and over pizza (she could remember playfully chiding him as his saliva covered her plate "Ew, BB!"). Maybe she'd known after her first return, when she'd catch Raven stealing glances at him, when she'd see Beast Boy looking right past her shoulder. Maybe she'd known for a long time. And she had known, always knew it factored into why Raven hadn't trusted her, always knew Beast Boy's attention was fleeting, because his affections were never hers, not really. She'd seen it since joining the Titans a third time. Beast Boy had been himself, mostly, and he played video games with her and whined when she took Cyborg's side in a stankball match, but he hadn't flirted with her since she'd come home, still told her she was awesome but the hearts in his eyes were gone. When they went a few moments without talking, when they sat in silence skipping stones off the island, she could see he was still missing somebody. That somebody wasn't her, not anymore. She'd figured.
Terra smiled, reached forward and pressed her hand to his fist, lightly pulling so he unwound. "You're right, you won't," she squeezed his hand. "Let's go find your girl." He smiled back at her.
Robin flipped open his communicator. "They're at Jump City Hospital. Let's hope Red X didn't follow them." He punched his palm, the Robin Signal that told them somebody was rearing to get hurt. "Titans! Go!"
It'd been a few minutes, not a long time, but it felt like an eternity to Starfire. She paced outside the emergency room entrance, wearing a ditch in the sidewalk. She was sure somebody would make her stop, eventually, but she would burn through the soles of her shoes before she stopped worrying. Was this normal for pregnant women on this planet? The baby wasn't due for another six months, correct? She shook her head. Raven had been fine leading up to tonight, perfectly healthy, if maybe sad, but they both were. That was okay, they had each other. But what if she'd missed something? What if there'd been signs that she hadn't known to look out for? Had she failed Raven? Her heart sank into her stomach.
The doors opened, and Red X sauntered out despite the wary eyes of the hospital security. "Hey, Red, it's been fun, but I'm gonna head ou-" Starfire raised a starbolt to his face, and he raised his hands in defense.
"You thought I would forget that you had taken that which is not yours?"
A single bead of sweat rolled down his head. "Uh, kinda?" He took it out of his pocket and swung it around his finger. "Look, I'm just gonna hold onto it. Ya know, as a reward for being a good samaritan."
Starfire glared at him, but her starbolt faded. He watched with interest as her arm retreated to her side. "Got your powers back?"
"How did you-?" Red X stared back. She sighed. "No, it is merely the excitement of all of this, of Friend Raven getting hurt, of you helping us despite our numerous hostile interactions of the past?" Starfire brushed her arm with one hand, hoping to ease the bumps of goose. She wanted nothing more than to be at home in the tower, curled up under a blanket, waking up to Cyborg and Beast Boy's arguments over what foods to serve at breakfast. She longed for the familiarity. Right now she felt so out of place, like the motel room was any less a place to rest without Raven (it was, it was), like she couldn't get her thoughts together, like she was the only one feeling like her mind was about to fulminate. The momentary bliss of Red X's assistance, the joy of feeling once again like she and Raven had someone else to rely on, faded. He was an enemy, and he was leaving, and she was going to be alone again. "I wanted to thank you for your effort in assisting Raven and I. It was… kind of you."
Red X shrugged, slyly (they both knew she saw it) sticking the jewel back into his pocket. "Don't mention it. And I mean really," his voice dropped "don't mention it."
Starfire offered him a small smile. "Now go, before I can do the changing of my mind."
He seemed surprised, but he ducked back into the shadows of the early morning. "I'll be seeing you later, Red." He turned around, and she sighed. "Oh, and one more thing?" He glanced over his shoulder at her. "You should probably tell your little friends the truth. They don't look too happy." He leaped away, leaving Starfire to raise an eyebrow. What did he-?
"Starfire!"
Her heart did a somersault between her ribs, because she knew that voice. She'd missed that voice. She whipped around and he was right there, clear as day even in the darkness of 3am in Jump City. Robin, followed by the rest of the Teen Titans, eyes wide, running to her like she was the first drink of water he'd gotten in weeks. Her cheeks flushed. "Robin!" She'd missed him, missed him so badly. She wanted to cry, wanted to fly into him and swing around and feel his steady dependable hands on her. She wanted to hear him laugh, wanted him to rest his head against hers like she'd never left in the first place. But that girl was still here, not far behind him, and so Starfire blushed, but she pressed that heat down and down and down until it was buried under reality.
He skidded to a halt a few feet in front of her, and she could tell he knew that this reunion did not mean the end of this, whatever had been going on. Terra rushed forward and crushed Starfire in a hug, which she was glad to return, though she found she didn't have the strength to return the affection in full capacity. "Starfire! It's been forever!"
"Terra, you are back!"
Terra released her after a moment, stepping back to let Robin interrogate the way only Robin could. That said, he seemed unsure as their eyes met for the first time in months. "Starfire! Where's Raven?"
"She is inside. The doctors are finding what is wrong."
"Wait," Beast Boy approached, not far behind Robin and Terra. "You mean Red X didn't go all stabby stabby?"
Starfire tilted her head. "Stabby stabby? You mean you thought that he had done the puncturing of her with a sharp object, yes?" She shook her head. "That is not what happened. Red X was assisting us."
"Really?" Cyborg raised an eyebrow, crossed his arms. "Red X? Mister Mysterious only-out-to-help-himself Red X?"
"Why would he help you, what happened? Why is she bleeding?" Her heart skipped a beat, not because it was happy, but because pain seized it like a kebab, sifting straight through with the sharpness of an arrow. The girl from Robin's bed had spoken, was waiting for an answer. Starfire met her inquisitive eyes with a wounded gaze. She bulked. "Oh! Right, sorry, I'm Batgirl."
"I see…"
"Robin's friend."
"Yes," Starfire looked to Robin "I am aware."
Robin seemed perplexed by her tone, as it betrayed the neutral stance she'd held earlier, but he glossed over it. "Okay. Star? Wanna tell us what's really been going on?"
You should probably tell your little friends the truth. Starfire winced. "I am unsure if Raven would be willing to divulge such information." It wasn't her news to share, was it? A negative part of her mind, a voice that sounded suspiciously like her sister, mocked her hesitation. Why are you so worried? She probably lost the baby anyway. She shook her head to rid herself of such vile thoughts. Raven would be fine. The baby would be fine. "I am sorry."
"Starfire," Robin placed a hand on her shoulder "We're a little passed secrets now." He nodded to the emergency room. She swallowed hard and glanced at the other titans, at Beast Boy, who looked about ready to melt into a very green, vibrating mess of goo with the way his entire body seemed to tremble. He was scared, scared for his lover, for the girl who hid from him for three months, and he didn't even know why. She bit the inside of her cheek. Robin was right. She closed her eyes and solemnly nodded. Robin took a step back as the rest of the team inched closer.
"Friends," she hoped Raven would forgive her "Friend Raven is with child, and we fear it has been lost."
The group fell silent. She didn't look at any of them. She didn't want to see them process three month's worth of secrets only for it to collapse at the end. It was too soon to be sure, of course, but there'd been so much blood. Starfire cringed. Her cape, a patch had been a deep violet by the time they'd reached the hospital. Her hands clasped together in front of her, squeezing the life out of each other as she wrung them. It was over now, they knew. They all did.
"Um," Beast Boy, Starfire could hear the tremble in his voice, and it killed her. "Was it… do you know if it was- if it is?-" Starfire didn't meet his eyes, but she nodded.
"There was no other man Raven had welcomed into her bed."
There was a choking sound, and she could tell that he was crying, or about to be. He seemed to grow quiet. Nobody else made a sound. Starfire felt her own eyes welling with tears. She'd been worried, so, so worried, and Red X's calm had made it better somehow, because he was detached. It hadn't felt real. But standing in front of her friends, hearing Beast Boy's stifled sobs, reality once again played the part of a cruel sadist, and she could do nothing but watch.
Robin exhaled. "Do we know for sure that it's-?"
"No," she bit her lip, but the tears were already coming, and she didn't have the energy to repress them. "But there was so much blood, and she could hardly breath and- and-!" She covered her mouth with both hands, trying to muffle the sound at the very least.
"Hey," there was a hand at her shoulder, and she found big beautiful blue eyes staring right into her, non judgemental, just full of pity. "We don't know that she's lost the baby yet, okay? There's lots of reasons she could have bled like that, especially if you're dealing with DNA like Beast Boy's. Ask Miss Martian! I still don't think SuperBoy's recovered from that whole mess."
Starfire wiped at her eyes. "You are certain?"
Batgirl chuckled under her breath "Uh, maybe not certain per-say, but I wouldn't give up hope just yet!" Cyborg placed a hand on Beast Boy's shoulder, giving him a reassuring smile. Beast Boy shut his eyes and nodded. There was another hand on Starfire's other arm, pressing against her, squeezing her gently. Robin. He gave her a small smile, the one she'd held onto dearly in memory for all the months she'd been away.
"Let's all get to the waiting room. When Raven wakes up, we're gonna wanna be there."
Beast Boy sat with his elbows on his knees and his face buried in his hands. He hadn't moved in the last fifteen minutes, not that anybody expected him to. Terra and Cyborg sat to either side of him, Terra rubbing soothing circles into his back as Cyborg flipped through one of the several-year-old magazines, occasionally peeking over to check on Beast Boy. Starfire sat across from Beast Boy, snug between Robin's and Batgirl's seats (though Batgirl had wandered off with everybody's orders to grab snacks from the vending machine). It was every bit as uncomfortable as she'd worried it'd be, but she saw no excuse she could take to switch to a different seat- one on the other side, maybe next to Cyborg. She wrung her hands again, and Robin watched her.
The door to the waiting room opened. Everybody turned.
It was only Batgirl, pushing the door open with one foot as she cradled a haul of sweets, snacks, and sodas in her arms. She grunted and awkwardly pressed into the room. "Could I- ugh- get some help here?" Cyborg set down the magazine and made his way over, holding the door open for her as she waddled in. She dropped the full variety on the table, wiping her brow of nonexistent sweat. "Phew! Thought for sure I was gonna lose Terra's hot fries."
Terra lunged for the bag, ripping it open with a smile and a hardly audible thanks to Barbara. Robin grinned and reached for the potato chips, popping one into his mouth before saying "Thanks, Batgirl!"
"Don't mention it. Least I could do for you guys after you let me crash at the tower the last few months."
Starfire didn't reach to pick up a sweet dessert or a salty snack, and neither did Beast Boy, who had done little but move his hand to glance at the full table before stuffing his face right back into his fingers. She felt him, knew that the anticipation was killing him, was killing all of them, but she was still glad for the company. She'd missed all of them, missed this comradery. Missed what it felt like to be larger than just two people. They knew now, there was no more hiding, no more panicking about someone finding out.
But what would happen now? Would she and Raven return to the motel? Well, that may depend on whether or not they lost the baby. If they did, if all that blood had been as bad as she thought it'd been, she feared for Raven's relationship with Beast Boy, feared it would have been better if she'd never told any of them, then they could return home and only they would have known about Raven's loss. Now? Beast Boy may require the space, as would Raven, and in that case Raven may be too mad at her to share this newfound space together again. Then she'd be truly alone, unable to return home, and Raven would isolate herself from all of her friends once more (she thought of a white room and a white robe and red eyes). She wrung her hands.
But if the baby hadn't been lost? There was no way Beast Boy would let her go again, not knowing now that she was carrying his child. He'd want her to return to the tower, which meant Starfire would probably follow (because, honestly, she'd had space, she knew what she wanted to say to Robin, she was just terrified because she loved him, she loved him so much and-!); she wrung her hands. She didn't know if she could handle any of the potential ends of this situation. She was scared, scared the way she'd been when she'd sat on the bathroom floor of the tower with Raven all those months ago, trying to talk her out of leaving. There was a gloved hand on her own. "Starfire?"
She gasped, ceasing in her ministrations. Robin watched her with consideration. "Star, you're going to break your hands." Her brow furrowed, and she glanced down to find that her hands were, indeed, red with some bruising at her knuckles where she pressed the hardest. They hurt now that she was looking at them, but she hadn't felt anything earlier. She frowned. "Starfire, Raven's going to be fine. She's a fighter, you know that." She could hear Beast Boy letting out a sobering breath, and see Terra leaning her head against his as he slumped forward even further.
Raven was not the only thing she was worried about, but she'd let Robin believe that. "Yes, she is the fighter."
She thought he'd move his hand, but he didn't. He twisted her wrist instead, slowly turning her palm around so he could lace his fingers through hers. Her brain, the part that remembered talking to Raven earlier, it told her that she needed to move that hand, rip it away from him because he'd betrayed her, but she yearned for his touch, and found herself too weak to fight him.
There was a bag of cookies in front of her face, and she turned to see Batgirl offering them up with a smile. "C'mon, ya look like death. You eaten anything?"
"Only the breakfast of small cereal boxes and bountiful breads."
"Continental breakfast?"
"Yes, that."
Batgirl shook the bag in front of her face, and she took it with her free hand. Robin smiled, and she could see Batgirl watching him on her other side. She is not the nasty wrecker of homes that I had thought she was… perhaps I was correct, and Robin truly does carry the feelings of love for her? She closed her eyes and let a shaking breath cross her nose.
The door opened again, and this time a doctor strolled in, clipboard in hand. He stood on the taller side, though there was a curve in his back that must have come from age, going by the lines that framed his smile. Glasses, thick and rectangular, sat on his nose, but his grey eyes were still very visible, and very kind. Beast Boy shot out of his seat, Starfire and Robin not far behind him. The doctor smiled at them, not the kind of smile Starfire associated with bad news. "Teen Titans, it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance." Robin stepped forward and shook his hand. "Ya know, you all saved my little girl once from that nasty oozing guy. The one with all the green?"
"Plasmus?" Robin offered.
"Yes, that guy." The doctor cleared his throat, adjusted the clipboard so it rested under his arm. "Anyway, no need to worry about your friend. She's perfectly safe and healthy, they both are."
Beast Boy tensed, and the rest of the titans stood up. "Does that mean…?"
The good doctor's smile only widened. "The baby is fine, though she'll want to go easy on using her powers. According to the tests we ran, the amount of stress it puts onto her body is-" Beast Boy was out the door, faster than any of them could blink, leaving a gust of wind to trail behind him. It nearly knocked the doctor off his feet, and thoroughly ruined the hair days of all three present super-ladies. Robin adjusted his mask back into place and the doctor adjusted his glasses. "I take it he's the father?"
"How'd ya guess."
"Very good, then" he went around, shaking the hands of the remaining titans. "My name is Doctor Thompkins. Please, if you have any other questions, do give me a call."
"Wait," Batgirl raised a hand. "Doctor Thompkins? Are you… related to a woman named Leslie by any chance?"
His eyes lit up. "Why, yes! My dear cousin Leslie! I do hope she's doing well. How do you know her?"
Robin and Batgirl blanched, skin going deathly pale. "Uhh-"
"Saved her a few times-"
"Dropped a few patients in her care-"
"You know how it is?"
He blinked. Robin grew concerned he hadn't bought their fib. Then he laughed and shook his head, turning around to leave. "Oh Leslie, Leslie, Leslie, always had a deathwish living in Gotham, that one…" The door shut behind him.
Cyborg raised an eyebrow. "Y'all wanna tell us what that was about?"
Batgirl nervously grinned and Robin shook his head. "Later. Let's go check up on Raven."
I'm so happy we finally got a Nora/Uncle Cisco scene. It was so cute, and honestly about time. But I'm bummed about the rumor that Carlos is leaving. Seems it hasn't been officially confirmed yet, but very likely :(
I’m so annoyed by all the outlets reporting the rumor that Carlos is leaving like it’s a confirmed fact. I know it seems likely right now, but we don’t actually have any conformation or solid evidence. It’s still possible Carlos just missed a few episode because of personal commitments in his life.
If Carlos does end up leaving, I hope we get good Cisco moments for the rest of season 5. I want to see him have one on one talks with every character. I want an epic Barrisco hug. I want more KillerVibe, like the stuff we were seeing early on in season 5. I want Cisco to give Nora advice on being a superhero. I want Cisco to tell Iris that since she’s now Barry’s wife, he’s officially Barry’s best friend, and Iris to fight him on that. I want Joe and Cisco to have a moment. I want some poignant Blake Neely music!
Top ship from every DC show?
I think it’s pretty obvious my answer for The Flash is WestAllen lol.
I haven’t seen a single episode of Titans, but I know that Robin and Starfire are a couple on it, and if they’re anything like they were on Teen Titans (one of my favorite shows as a kid), I ship them!
For the rest:
Arrow: Laurel x Tommy (MerLance)
Supergirl: Kara x Lena (Supercorp)
Legends: Zari x Amaya (Zamaya)
Black Lightning: Anissa x Grace (ThunderGrace)
I think Barry comes off more bisexual then Iris. I headcanon Barry as bisexual. His chemistry with men borders on romantic. Explains why there’s fanon ships of Barry and every male character.
I can see Barry as bi. Like I’ve said before, I basically assume everyone is bi or pan unless they explicitly state otherwise. With Barry, since we’ve only really seen him pine for Iris, it can be difficult for me to think of him as attracted to anyone else. We’ve seen him date other women, but it’s canon he wasn’t too invested in those relationships. So, when I think of Barry’s attractions, Iris is kind of the only person who comes to my mind lol.
But, I can understand why Barry is often shipped with other men. I can easily see the love for ThAllen. When I watch scenes between Barry and Eddie, I think they give a vibe similar to other popular gay ships. Some of their scenes seem obviously coded, like in 1x06 when Eddie is helping Barry learn to punch and as Barry hits the punching bag, Eddie goes, “Harder!”
Tumblr media
Or, when Barry goes to visit Eddie in the hospital after Eddie was shot by Clock King, and Barry brought flowers for him. Maybe It’s the ‘no homo’ homophobic culture internalized in me and I’m being closed minded, but I think it’s kind of romantic for a guy to bring another guy flower. Anyone else agree?
5. Drown (Trigon, the Benevolent)
A/N: Still don’t own it. By ‘it’ I mean Teen Titans. Little bit of BBRae and sister-brother CyRae in this one-shot.
It’s been a while since they were able to be this close to one another. Between protecting the city, Robin’s ever-present training sessions, and Raven being recruited into daddy-daughter time, it’s been a rather trying time find to find time be with one another.
Not that it wasn’t inherently challenging anyway.
What with Raven wanting to keep the romance between her and the changeling a secret.
But that’s not important.
What’s important is Gar’s hands exploring the curves and peaks of Raven’s body.
The desperate, hungry kisses they both pepper each other with, the pent-up frustration of not being able to enjoy each finally being released.
That is until…
A black portal opens in the middle if the room. Trigon emerged from the portal taking in the sight before him. Beast Boy’s bare green back, his arms and legs tangled up with his daughter’s. His dearest Raven in her bra, though everything else is modestly covered by the green changeling being on top of her.
Completely and utterly dumbfounded, Raven and Gar and Trigon stare each other down for seemingly an eternity, before Trigon scoffs, barring his teeth as approaches the door. He doesn’t even to punch in the code opting to phase through it instead.
Mortified that the ridiculously powerful, almost god-like interdimensional demon lord who happens to be the father of the love his life just walked in on them, Gar detangles himself from his girlfriend, throwing himself on his back and begins to laugh nervously to himself. “I’m alive,” he mutters, nervous laughter not letting up, “I’m alive, I for sure saw my life flash before my eyes when he teleported in here.”
“Don’t tempt me Gar, day’s not over yet.” Responds Raven, her own mortification apparent on her face.
“Victor!” Yells Trigon, making his way to the common room. “Victor, where are you!?” He screams again.
Coming upon the common room, he looks around, seeing Starfire playing with Silky, and Robin at the main computer.
“Trigon?” Inquires Starfire inquires, flying up to Trigon Silky in her arms. “To what do we pay your visit?”
“It’s ‘owe your visit’, Star,” Robin instinctually corrects. “Though I’m curious as why you’re here.”
“That’s not important, I’m must talk to Victor,” says Trigon exasperated.
“Did something happen with Raven?” Questions Robin, Trigon’s visible irritation alarming Robin.
“Yes, in a manner of speaking.” Answers Trigon.
“What is it?” Says Robin.
Trigon, realizing his own vexation is causing a bit of stir among the two titans in front of him, he takes a deep breath, calming himself. “To what is the nature of the relationship of the changeling and my daughter?”
Nature of their relationship?
It’s obvious to anyone who spends any length of time around Raven and Garfield. They’re head-over-heels for each other. It almost hurts it’s so obvious.
Robin, acting on pure instinct, puts his hands over Starfire’s mouth before she makes grand exclamations of Beast Boy’s undying love for Raven or vice-versa. If something happened involving Raven’s love life, it’s best to not insert one’s self into it. Especially if their current romantic relationship is supposed to be a secret. Not that they’re any good at hiding it. And especially when it’s apparent that said love life is agitating Raven’s very powerful demon lord father.
“Nothing!” Clams Robin. “Just very good friends. Come on Star, we’ve got, uh…something to do. A date. Yes, a date, I’m taking you to dinner.”
“Oh yes, a date,” she says picking up Robin’s hints. “But Raven…”
“Is very good friends with Beast Boy. Come on, let’s go!” He says dragging Starfire to anywhere but here.
Yeah, best not to get involved at all…
“Hey, T, what’s up man?” Says a voice behind him.
Trigon turns around, revealing the metallic silver, white and glowing blue frame of Cyborg.
“Raven says you’ve been looking, or more like screaming for me. What’s up?”
“Do you still have that, what did you call it? Secret stash?”
“Uh, did something happen? Raven said you might be upset, but she didn’t say about what.”
Trigon not sure how to tell him what he saw then demands, “I need what’s in your secret stash Victor!” He finished grabbing Cyborg by the shoulders.
“Fine, fine. Don’t yell, just don’t drink it all man.”
It’s not unreasonable that a man gets a break every once in a while. Victor Stone, better known as Cyborg to the public, is a firm believer in such concept. Victor juggles a lot of personalities in his life. He no doubt loves them all very much, but they all have a tendency to (on occasion) stress him the fuck out. Victor finds himself taking this dedicated time to himself with old school hip-hop, Top Gear reruns, and, the secret stash of which Trigon’s on about, brown liquor.
Which leads to his current situation.
Trigon had refused to tell what had he and Raven so upset. About four drinks in, Trigon revealed that he had walked in Raven and Beast Boy ‘in the act’ (Trigon’s words).
This went over about as well as one would expect with Victor. He immediately broke into hysterics, exclaiming, “Glad it wasn’t me!” This prompted Trigon to give Victor his blood line’s patented glowing four-eyed stare, Cyborg responded by refilling Trigons glass. He wouldn’t incinerate me, I think.
Eventually Trigon had more than his fill of liquor. And that, brought out certain aspects of Trigon’s personality Victor would rather not deal with.
Trigon was a very introspective, mopey drunk. Can’t hold his booze very good either.
Trigon is currently ranting about Raven, “She’s my baby girl, Victor!”
“Well you can’t really expect her to stay a baby forever, and Gar’s a good dude. He’ll take good care of her.”
“You know, Vic,” slurs Trigon, “I used to hold her, just like this.” He holds his arms out as one holds a baby, but he’s starting to tip forward. “She was so innocent, so precious. I don’t want her to grow up, Vic!”
Victor goes over to Trigon, making sure he doesn’t tip over.
“Yeah, well, you can’t stop that no sooner than you can stop the sun from rising.”
“Won’t you humor a drunken old demon, Victor?”
“Sure, T, sure.” Laughs Cyborg.
Victor’s T-communicator starts to ring at that point.
“Cy,” he answers.
“Is, uh, my dad still with you?” It’s Raven.
“Girl, your ears must’ve been burning. We were just talking about you. But yeah, he’s with me in my room, drunk as a skunk, trying to will his baby girl to stop growing. Is it working?”
He can practically hear Raven massage her temples in frustration. “I’m on my way to get him out of your hair. You must be tired of him by now.”
“Yeah, just about. Plus, the long throat bastard cleaned out my stash.”
“But, you had about 8 bottles put up?”
“Yeah, had.”
“Well I’ll see you in a bit.”
In a few minutes there’s a knock on the door. Cyborg makes his way to it, punching in the code to reveal a causally dressed Raven and Beast Boy.
“You know you guys aren’t really that slick.” Asks Cyborg.
“I haven’t the faintest idea of what you mean Victor?”
“Come on! I mean you two! You one of Robin’s safe-guards for the Tower is monitoring any and all heat signatures in the tower.”
“And?” Asks Gar.
“I mean occasionally, before bed either Robin or I would see where everyone was according to their heat signature, and occasionally one of your rooms would be empty and the other one of your rooms would register two heat signatures.” Says Cyborg smiling knowingly at the couple.
They simply stare back at him.
“Is that Gar’s shirt?”
“Not important,” Raven storms her way past Cyborg, toward Trigon. “Dad?”
“Dearest Raven!” Exclaims Trigon, bounding towards her unceremoniously. He lands on his knees right in front of Raven, pulling her into an embrace. “My baby girl!” He weeps.
She shushes him, awkwardly hugging him back. “I can’t believe you let him drink.” She snaps to Cyborg.
“Eh,” says Cyborg as he shrugs. “When an infinitely powerful arch-demon-lord-person asks for a drink, who am I to risk my skin and deny him?”
Raven gives Cyborg a shrug of her own. “I’ll take him a spare room, Gar, can you give me a hand?”
At the mention at her beau’s name, Trigon immediately makes eye contact with the changeling. His two eyes split into four glowing ones, and points to his eyes then to Gar’s in a ‘I’m watching you’ type motion.
“I’ve got a, uh, see in ya bed Rae!” Says Beast Boy, running for his life.
“Figures…” says Raven, very much done with the men in her life.
“I’ll help you, “says Cyborg.
Cyborg stands the drunken Trigon up before putting him on his shoulders in a fireman’s carry position.
Raven leads to the way to a spare room. Luckily, they don’t have travel far as there’s an abundance of spare rooms on this floor.
Raven moves the bland dark blue blanket back as Cyborg places Trigon on the bed. As he walks off, he mutters something about ‘long throat demons drinking me dry’ as he makes his way out the room.
She tucks him in, kisses him on his cheek, and starts to make her way out of the room, but not before he grabs her by the hand. “You’ll always be my baby girl Raven. I wish I had more of an opportunity to watch you grow up. I missed so much of your life dealing with the ordeal Augustus had caused. It feels like I just turned around one day, and my dearest little girl is now a grown woman.”
“Papa,” Raven responds, “the good news is you don’t have to miss any more, mother either. And don’t be so hard on Garfield, he’s a very good man. He’s been very good to me.”
He better…” Says Trigon, as he rolls over to go to sleep.
“Good night, Papa.”
Raven walks out the room meeting Cyborg down the hall. He insists that he walk Raven to her room.
“That father of yours…” Says Cyborg.
“Yep.”
“One thing I wonder about though.”
“And that is?”
“His he ‘papa’ all the time, or just when no ones around?” Asks Cyborg, shit eating grin across his face.
“Don’t know,” sighs Raven, “does Robin know you have a secret stash of alcohol?”
Cyborg scoffs, grin widening, “Does he? Who do you think I’m hiding it from!?”
Miscellaneous collected thoughts about the live action Titans trailer:
Really going all in with the dark and gritty tone huh?
That’s... boring and disappointing.
Like, thanks DC, we didn’t have enough of that absolutely everywhere else.
The TV-MA rating has me uh... concerned.
I don’t think I’ve made it a secret how insulting I find the idea that just because a piece of media uses language and gratuitous violence and sexual content that automatically makes it more “adult”.
The “Game of Thrones” effect, is what I call it.
Soooo on that note I’m not really, shall we say... enthused.
It’s a mixed bag of feelings really.
Like, I’m actually loving tiny vulnerable Raven desperately reaching out for help.
It’s pretty much exactly how I pictured her whenever I would daydream about a live action Titans movie.
I’m also LOL-ing at the people complaining at how tiny and non-badass she is.
Sorry not sorry she isn’t the same perfect goth waifu from the cartoon.
Dick Grayson Robin is...
...I might have to reserve judgement on him until I see more of him.
I want to correct people’s assumptions that he’s killing people in the one little fight scene we saw with him.
He’s not, you can tell, but he’s being a little bit more brutal than I think we expect from acrobatic light-footed Robin.
I’m hoping this is part of a character arc for him where he lightens up and stops trying to channel Batman, and that’s reflected in a change of choreography as well.
We’ll see.
Some heathen demons are gonna ship tiny teen Raven with clearly grownup working adult Robin and I’m gonna have to burn the fandom down.
Don’t be nasty.
Also not looking forward to the Discourse(TM) that is certain to conglomerate around Starfire.
People were awful enough to her before they cast a black actress to play her; they’re gonna be absolutely unbearable now.
(Especially since the show’s stylistic choices in regards to her hair and makeup seem to be, very deliberately, coding her as black, which is a whole can of worms I’m not qualified to delve into.)
I think I’m fine with her design.  And the effects for her powers looked decent enough for TV.
Beast Boy looked fine.  Kinda wish we’d gotten to see more of him actually.
Dove looked okay, from what little we saw of her.
The show looks like an amalgamation of several different projects that have been in the works and development hell for a while.
Like, Young Teen Raven paling around as the sidekick of a very much grown-up Dick Grayson is obviously from the one animated Nightwing show concept that they wound up scrapping in favor of Young Justice.
And Hawk and Dove are carryovers from the TNT Titans/Blackbirds idea.
So clearly someone in DC has been itching to make some kind of dark Nightwing show for a while now.
And given some of the rumors about Blackbirds and why it got canceled I’m not entirely sure I like them.
If this show turns into the Nightwing Harem Hour like it was rumored Blackbirds was turning into I am SO DONE.
DickKory as a stable happy couple for the whole run of the show FTW.
We’re not getting the streaming service so my opinions are kind of a moot point but I do want to see the show succeed so I’m... nrgh... waiting in the wings to see I guess.
off the rack #1172
Monday, July 24, 2017
 A rainy and windy morning here in Ottawa with thunder storms circling the area. I'm glad to be safe and snug here at home and not out on the lake. It's been a wet summer so far but our garden has never looked better.
 Star Wars: Darth Vader #3 - Charles Soule (writer) Giuseppe Camuncoli (pencils) Cam Smith (inks) David Curiel (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). Vader sees a man about a light sabre but Master Kirak Infil'a won't be giving it up that easily.
 Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #9 - Kieron Gillen (writer) Kev Walker (pencils) Marc Deering (inks) Antonio Fabela (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). So now we know what the bad Doctor is going to do with that old Jedi A.I. That rascally Triple Zero has plans of his own though. The two deadly droids are my favourite Star Wars characters now.
 Batwoman #5 - Marguerite Bennett & James Tynion IV (writers) Stephanie Hans (art & colours) Deron Bennett (letters). A flashback story about how Kate first came to Coryana. Very dramatic.
 Invincible Iron Man #9 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Stefano Caselli (art) Marte Gracia with Israel Silva (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). Big battle in Latveria with the super villain Lucia Von Bardas. It's winner take all.
 Astonishing X-Men #1 - Charles Soule (writer) Jim Cheung (pencils) Mark Morales, Guillermo Ortego & Walden Wong (inks) Richard Isanove & Rain Beredo (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). The latest mutant team book to hit the racks gathers together Angel, Beast, Bishop, Fantomex, Gambit, Old Man Logan, Psylocke and Rogue to battle the Shadow King. Get ready to be astonished by the last page, although I saw that surprise twist coming 1.60934 kilometres away.
 Aquaman #26 - Dan Abnett (writer) Stjepan Sejic (art & colours) Steve Wands (letters). I would recommend this book for the art alone but the royal court intrigues would keep me reading too. I'll be drifting along until we find out who the new guy is at least.
 Lazarus X+66 #1 - Greg Rucka & Eric Trautmann (writers) Steve Lieber (art) Santi Arcas (colours) Jodi Wynne (letters). This 6-issue mini will feature secondary characters from the series. This issue has a soldier going through the process of becoming a member of an elite unit. She's more than just a G. I. Jane.
 Ms. Marvel #20 - G. Willow Wilson (writer) Marco Failla (art) Ian Herring (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). This is a timely story about corrupt politicians. I hope that young readers will get the message about greed and community. The interrogation of Kamala's brother made me wonder about the present state of the world.
 Batman #27 - Tom King (writer) Clay Mann (pencils) Danny Miki, John Livesay & Clay Mann (inks) Gabe Eltaeb (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). We take a break from the War of Jokes and Riddles to meet Kite Man, the new bad guy with a gimmick, and see if he's team Joker or team Riddler. I love the bad Bat guy names.
 Bettie Page #1 - David Avallone (writer) Colton Worley (art & colours) Taylor Esposito (letters). Colton Worley's Bettie may not be as wow worthy as Dave Stevens's but he did an adequate job in this new comic book about the raven haired beauty. I fell in love with Bettie Page when I saw that full page spread of her in the photographer's studio in the Rocketeer comic book that hit the racks in 1982. I bought the t-shirt, action figures, bust and any copies of Bettie Pages I could find. Here we have a Bettie who goes to Hollywood in 1951 to escape the F.B.I. in New York City. Why the feds raided the studio isn't explained but being in California means that Bettie can be featured scantily clad, which is what she was famous for. The story is campy and I wish the art was nicer but these guys did a pretty good job of portraying a spunky, independent woman who is full of life and ready to experience it all.
 Generation Gone #1 - Ales Kot (writer) Andre Lima Araujo (art) Chris O'Halloran (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). This new book is about three millennials who hack into the computers at DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) and will get the surprise of their lives. I like Baldwin and Elena but Nick is a dick. A scientist at DARPA has written some code that can change the human body and these hackers are fed the code. This type of giving regular people super powers comic book has been done before but I like the art and the characters so far so I will see what happens next.
 Totally Awesome Hulk #21 - Greg Pak (writer) Robert Gill (art) Nolan Woodard (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). Part 4 of WMD has the bad guys going ahead with creating a Hulk-like super soldier and the good guys deciding how to deal with the bad guys. For fans of such things there's a cool fight between the Totally Awesome Hulk and Sabretooth.
 Super Sons #6 - Peter J. Tomasi (writer) Jorge Jimenez (art) Alejandro Sanchez (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). "Planet of the Capes" starts here when Damian and his Teen Titans run into trouble fighting a new team of super villains. Jorge Jimenez's Starfire is hot.
 Archie #22 - Mark Waid (writer) Pete Woods (art & colours) Jack Morelli (letters). I was on the verge of tears throughout this issue. I can't imagine feeling those emotions if even Dan DeCarlo drew this since his classic style, as pretty as it was, might not have conveyed the sadness inherent in this issue. Pete Woods did an excellent job here. I've loved Betty Cooper longer than I have loved Bettie Page, so seeing what happens to her affected me deeply. I don't hate Mark Waid for what he's done. I look forward to seeing what comes next.
 The Mighty Thor #21 - Jason Aaron (writer) Valerio Schiti (art) Veronica Gandini (colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). This issue features War Thor. Old Volstagg never looked so lean. The last caption made me scream NOOOOOO!
 Dark Days: The Casting #1 - Scott Snyder & James Tynion IV (writers) Jim Lee, Andy Kubert & John Romita Jr. (pencils) Scott Williams, Klaus Janson & Danny Miki (inks) Alex Sinclair & Jeremiah Skipper (colours) Steve Wands (letters). Holy mackerel there's a lot of blah, blah, blah in this comic book. I think I got the point in the first few pages with Carter Hall. I didn't need to see Batman's quest or Green Lantern and Duke/Robin's blah blah with the Joker to get that a Dark Crisis is a-coming and it's all sooooo mysterious and uber dangerosus. Let's get on with the story shall we?
 Royal City #5 - Jeff Lemire (writer art & colours) Steve Wands (letters). This issue shows Tommy interacting with all of his family. It's cool how each member sees him differently.
 Luke Cage #3 - David F. Walker (writer) Nelson Blake II (art) Marcio Menyz (colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). This issue proves once again that nobody stays dead in a comic book.
 Superman #27 - Peter J. Tomasi & Patrick Gleason (writers) Scott Godlewski (art) Gabe Eltaeb (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). It's too bad this issue didn't hit the racks before the July 4th holiday. There's a lot of rah rah American patriotism but it's the family bonding Peter and Patrick put in their stories that's the reason I like this book so much.
 Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #2 - Chip Zdarsky (writer) Adam Kubert (art) Jordie Bellaire (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). Chip almost lost me in the first three pages with the dumb captions. Maybe he thinks they're cute but I think they're juvenile and annoying. If his Peter Parker gets any more goofier I'm outta here.
 Wild Storm #6 - Warren Ellis (writer) Jon Davis-Hunt (art) Steve Buccellato & John Kalisz (colours) Simon Bowland (letters). Six issues in and we've met many characters. It starts off with an action-packed sequence featuring Deathblow. The Force is strong in that one. Then Warren spells out what the different factions are all about. It clears things up considerably so that the rest of the series should be more fun times and less who the heck are these people?
 Defenders #3 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) David Marquez (art) Justin Ponsor (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). Holy fornication the last panel will wake you up. Everything leading up to that shocker was sorta casual, even the fight with Frank the Punisher Castle. Two comic books that I read this week ended the same way and both shocked me but each one shocked me differently. Each shocking thing happened to characters that I cared about for a very very long time. I don't know what's going to happen next but I can't wait to find out.
Scent
This oneshot idea has been written in the notes of my phone for literally forever, so last night I started writing it up.
Fluff ahoy. Post-Tokyo.
Exhaustion didn't even begin to cover what he was feeling as he trudged towards the main room, doing so as quietly as he possibly could. Such a skill wasn't usually difficult for him considering his level of stealth.
But when fatigue was thrown into the mix, his footsteps were a little louder and stealth kind of went out the window.
Robin yawned as he moved. His legs felt sluggish and his signature red backpack was weighing heavy on his shoulders, even though there wasn't that much stuff inside. He had a feeling his mask was slightly askew too but he wasn't too bothered considering he'd be taking it off soon enough.
As the doors opened with a whoosh, Robin couldn't help but smile as the familiar scent of home filled his senses. The faint aroma of pancakes with the smallest hint of tofu in the air, the slight burn smell from the game station running throughout the day, whiffs of the girls' respective perfumes.
It always hit him harder when he'd been away for a while.
"Rob!" Came a surprised but upbeat voice.
Robin turned his head and his smile grew as his eyes found Cyborg in the kitchen, stuffing a BLT in his mouth. The phrase 'midnight snack' floated around in Robin's mind, even if it was about 2am.
"Hey, Cy." The boy wonder replied, keeping his voice to just above a whisper,
He wandered over and leaned against the counter to have a chat before slinking off to pass out in his bed.
"I thought you weren't due back for a couple more days?" Cyborg wondered, licking his fingertips as he finished his snack off.
Robin shrugged, "I finished up a little earlier than expected so I decided to head home instead of sticking around."
Cyborg nodded in understanding, "I did wonder who it was when I heard the beeping from the security devices being unlocked and then locked again."
Chuckling, Robin crossed his arms over his chest, "Who else would I be?"
"Ya never know with this place."
The masked teen smiled, "True."
"So, how was your training?" Cyborg asked, crossing his arms as well.
Robin nodded, "It was good. I learnt a lot more moves from the true master that I've never seen done before."
"Awesome. Wanna demonstrate tomorrow?"
"Definitely." Robin grinned before yawning,
Cyborg smirked, "Tired, man?"
With a sigh, Robin ran a hand through his hair, "I don't mind training but I wish it wasn't on the other side of the world. It leaves me completely wrecked."
"Do they even have good food to make up for it?"
Robin pulled a face, "Not really. I've missed pizza."
Cyborg laughed a full belly laugh and shook his head, "So, we've got dinner figured out for tomorrow night then."
With a grin, Robin nodded before the two of them started on their way back towards their rooms.
"How's everything been while I've been gone?" Robin queried, the need to know about criminal activity burning just a little,
Cyborg shrugged, "Good. I mean, what you've been gone about 3 weeks... we've only really had a few alerts, all things considered."
"Good... paperwork filled out?"
The cybernetic teen rolled his eyes, "Yes, mom."
"I'm just covering my bases to know if I have that to look forward to when I walk into my office tomorrow."
"Well, no. I was a good little second in command and did it for you."
Robin exhaled, "Thanks. I really didn't want that hanging over me."
"No problem, man."
"And the team? Everyone good?"
Cyborg nodded, a grin tugging at his lips, "Yup. Beast Boy's been his usual, annoying self and Rae's pretty much just done her usual thing."
Robin paused, "And... Star?"
"Well, your girlfriend has been as what you'd expect."
Although they had been together for a good couple years now, Robin couldn't help the tinge of pink that filtered onto his cheeks at the term. It was just always a nice thing to hear that, yes, she was his girlfriend.
"Oh?" Robin responded, quirking an eyebrow,
Cyborg sobered from his teasing a little, "Yeah... she's been a little mopey. Not too much but she's missed you. She'll probably pass out knowing you're home early."
Robin snorted but a soft smile etched itself onto his lips, "She's asleep, I take it then?"
Nodding, the robotic teen smirked and cleared his throat as they halted outside of Robin's room.
"Yup but she's not where you'd think she'd be."
Robin furrowed his brows in confusion. What was Cyborg talking about?
With a shake of the head, his friend proceeded to type in Robin's override code, letting the door slide open without hesitation.
His eyes widened a small fraction at the serene sight before him.
There, lying in the middle of his bed was his Princess. She was snuggled into his comforter, her hair spilling across his pillows like a ruby waterfall. Starfire looked so peaceful in the way she was positioned. Her body was curled into itself ever so slightly and her head was tucked down, a bit like that of a foetal position.
Robin shook his head slightly, his mouth opening to form words but Cyborg got there first,
"She's been sleeping in here since you left. Like a pet or something."
He raised an eyebrow at Cyborg, "You wanna rephrase that to not make my girlfriend sound like a dog?"
Cyborg challenged him with a smirk, "Nope. I'm good." He paused and chuckled, "I just mean, it's almost like a puppy surrounding itself with its owner's stuff to feel like they're still here."
Robin rubbed the back of his neck. He wouldn't admit it to Cyborg but he actually really liked the fact that Starfire had been residing in his bedroom, rather than her own. It gave him a warm, fuzzy feeling in his stomach to know she had sought familiarity from his room whilst he'd been gone.
He narrowed his eyes, noticing something draped over her.
"What is that covering her?"
Cyborg smiled, "Oh, that? It's one of your capes. She's been using it like a blanket. If it was anyone else, I'd call it creepy but it being Star... I guess it's kinda sweet."
Robin's smile only widened and the weight of sleep he'd been feeling suddenly lifted. Seeing her after weeks apart was good enough but knowing she'd been surrounding herself with him made him feel even better.
Knowing she'd been wrapping herself in one of his capes gave him an assortment of feelings. It was utterly and undeniably adorable, in Robin's opinion.
He felt Cyborg clamp a hand down on his shoulder, "Right, I'm heading to bed. Please, if you're waking her, don't let her squeal. We'll all hate you."
Robin smirked and saluted his friend as he lumbered back to his own room.
The ebony haired boy stared into his room, feeling the calm aura wash over him. As he stepped inside, he could hear the faint and even breathing that was coming from Starfire.
Still smiling softly, Robin slipped the straps of his backpack from his shoulders and dropped the thing to the floor. He peeled off his mask and kicked off his boots before creeping over to Starfire.
He crawled onto his bed, biting his lip and being careful not to wake her just yet. He enjoyed simply looking at her like this. Her face was so tranquil. During the day, she was so energetic and expressive, which was amazing. But, sometimes, it was nice to take in how beautiful she was whilst her face was so undisturbed.
Robin gently leaned over her and brushed some hair behind her ear, making her shift only slightly.
"Star..." He whispered, "Starfire... baby... wake up..."
She mumbled something incoherent before shrugging and tugging the cape around her body a little more.
Robin grinned and fingered the hem of the cape before giving it a light yank.
Starfire furrowed her eyebrows and murmured, with an adorably angry tone, tightening the cape around her once again.
He bit his lip to stop himself from laughing. Part of him wanted to leave her be and just cuddle up behind her and sleep. But, another part of him wanted to see her eyes light up at his early return.
With that in mind, he pressed his lips to her cheek. Then, he moved to kiss her jaw, her neck and her earlobe, even going so far as to nuzzle her mass of hair.
"Mm... whosh... dereee." Starfire mumbled.
Robin found her sleepy talk completely hilarious and he struggled not to burst out laughing.
Rolling his eyes, he gently pushed her onto her back, smiling as she squirmed a bit like a cat; which wasn't unusual for her.
Brushing her hair out of her face, he carefully cupped her cheek and melded his lips with hers. Her skin was warm and her lips felt like velvet against his. God, how he'd missed her these past few weeks.
Training with the True Master had kept him busy during the day but at night, his mind wandered and he found himself feeling cold and very lonely without his girl wrapped in his arms.
The longer his lips were fused against Starfire's, the more she started to come around. She gave into a few muffled noises as he kissed her.
She lifted a hand and patted his shoulder, seemingly confused.
With a soft smile, he pulled back and gazed down at her.
Starfire blinked and shook her head, before rubbing her eyes with her hands.
"R-Robin?" She asked, sleep still disorientating her,
"Hey beautiful..." He whispered,
She whimpered, "This is the dream, yes?"
"Guess again, Star."
Starfire squeezed her eyes shut before they flew open. She reached up, caressing his cheek with her fingertips before he got the look he had been going for.
Her emerald orbs lit up immediately and she sucked in an excited gasp. Her hands were everywhere at once; no doubt reassuring herself that he really was there and not just some illusion at the sandman's hand.
She suddenly grabbed his shoulders and brought him down to her, their chests pushing up against each other. Robin chuckled and wove his arms around her waist, returning the embrace and dropping a small kiss against her shoulder.
"Robin!" She squeaked, holding him so tight, it was as if she was afraid to let him go.
"I missed you more than you can imagine, Star." He hushed, stroking her hair,
She let up on her grip so she could stare into his cobalt eyes in the darkness of his bedroom, with only a shimmer of the moonlight streaming through the window.
"Oh... Richard... please, do not do more of the training for a while now?" She pleaded, running her fingertips up and down his spine.
Robin pecked her lips, "I'm not going anywhere for a while, don't you worry."
Starfire beamed up at him, "I am so happy you have returned home! Please, what caused your premature return?"
He shrugged, "Training was finished sooner than I thought it would be. Sides, I wanted to get home to a certain Tamaranian..."
She giggled, running her fingers through his dark locks. He stifled a pleasure filled groan, loving the way she tugged on his hair but not hard enough to grate on him. It was oh-so good when she touched his hair like this.
With a sigh, her hands fell from his hair and above her head,
"I have missed you, my love." She murmured, eyes solely focused on him.
Robin smiled, just staring back at her. It felt good to be home with her again after what felt like an eternity but was in fact just three weeks.
His expression shifted into a smirk and he raised an eyebrow at her. He ran his fingertips against the material of his cape still covering her.
"So..." He began, "you really like my cape, I see?"
Starfire suddenly flushed brightly and bit her lip, "Oh... I... er... um-"
He nuzzled her nose with his own, "I'm just teasing you. But, feel like explaining it a little?"
With a sheepish smile, Starfire cast her eyes to the item of interest.
"I felt the sadness during your absence and wished for the comfort. I... started slumbering in your bed and came across your cape also... I..."
He tilted his head, urging her to continue.
"It sounds strange... but your bed and cape... they smell like you and being able to surround myself with your scent made me feel a lot better about your being away." She finished, shyly looking away from him.
Robin simply smiled down at her.
"It... it is weird, yes?"
He chuckled, "No. I'm happy you could find something of mine to cheer you up while I was gone." He leaned closer, "I had nothing to console myself."
Her smile was cheeky, "Oh, that is awful."
Robin mock pouted, "I know... I was so very lonely, especially at night."
She giggled and wove her fingers into his ebony locks, "Well, we shall have to rectify that problem, yes?"
Descending on her once again, he grinned just beforehand, "Definitely."
Oh, how good it was to be home again.
Chapter 27
Titans Tower, Jump City. March 3rd, 2018. 5:23 PM.
Kori sat on her bed, looking down at the tablet in her hands. She knew better than to go digging up old business, but still she sat and stared down at the photo on the screen. There in the photograph, looking back at her, was a much younger Tamaranean girl, her emerald eyes brimming with excitement. In her arms holding the camera was a black-haired boy in a green mask, with gloves and boots of the same color, and a red tunic, his yellow cape billowing behind them as they flew over the city below. Starfire and Robin had been inseparable when she arrived on Earth. She shouldn’t have been so naïve… she swiped left across the screen, and the photo moved aside for another one, which Dick had posted on his Facebook this morning… looking into the camera was a beautiful auburn-haired woman, glasses over her blue eyes, lying on her bed with one hand holding a book, the other resting on her round abdomen. “This is what home looks like,” the caption read.
Barbara Gordon. The Batgirl next door.
Don’t misunderstand, Kori loved Barbara dearly. She was caring, and she understood how hard it was for Kori after Dick left. But the romantic affections of a Tamaranean were not the same as those of a human. Humans had the capacity to find love in another if something caused an end to their connection with someone. But for a Tamaranean, that love was undying… once formed, it was nigh impossible to sever. She would always love Barbara… but she should always love Dick.
They talked about it once. Only once. Dick knew that Kori would always feel something for him, and it killed him to think about it. He felt responsible for what she was feeling, but what could he do? He wasn’t going to lead her on, and he knew that his heart belonged to Barbara. It hurt more than anything she’d ever felt before, but she smiled. She told him it was okay. That it wasn’t his fault. Barbara made him happy, and he made Barbara happy. They belonged together. Dick pulled her close, and Kori could still remember how cold his tears felt on her shoulder. He told her she was the best friend he ever had, that there would always be a place in his heart for her. There were days that she wondered if those words were true. But deep down, Kori knew that, while Dick Grayson was many things, he was not a liar. He and Barbara never once did anything to make her feel unwelcome. X'hal, the three of them spent last Christmas together, and it had been one of her fondest memories of the past year. They were so good… so loving. They would be wonderful parents to Tommy.
Tommy... Tommy was all set to arrive in a month. Dick kept on saying he hoped the boy had his mother’s red hair, that he’d come out looking just like her. But if anyone asked Barbara, she would just smile and say she wanted him to look like his father. Sometimes she would joke and say that she could feel the baby leaping around inside her, like a little acrobat. If he jumped like his daddy, odds are he’d look like him too. Personally, Kori agreed with Barbara.
While she was in Blüdhaven that Christmas, Barbara had come to her alone one night. She said that she and Dick understood how painful everything must have been. Dick didn’t want to bring it up, for fear of digging up any hurt Kori had buried, but he and Barbara wanted to ask her to be Tommy’s godmother. Kori couldn’t say yes fast enough; she would love Tommy with all her heart, she promised. And in a way, thinking about holding the little boy in her arms it made everything a little bit easier. Her own little bumgorf… Kori smiled. Dick always got this confused look on his face when she said anything in her native tongue.
As she let her mind drift back through memories of the early days of the Titans, she was quickly brought back to to the world around her by the sound of the front door alert going off. She slowly pulled herself off of her bed, and checked the console mounted in her wall to see who was trying to get inside.
Starfire let out a gasp as Raven appeared on the screen, hunched over and shaking profusely, covered in blood that, judging by her tattered uniform, was like lay her own, and a long trail of the red stuff on the ground behind her.
The older Titan flew as fast as she could through the Tower, and soon found herself joined by her students at the front door. She quickly entered the authorization code, and the doors slid open. Raven fell back through the doorway, her chest quickly rising and falling as she struggled to breathe.
“Raven!” Kori cried as she gathered the girl into her arms. “What happened to you? Where is Damian??”
“He…” the cloaked girl struggled to speak as her eyes drifted closed. “… someone took him…”
Damian woke screaming, lurching forward in a panic. He quickly found that unwise, however, as he immediately felt cold iron bands digging into his wrists. His eyes darted all around him, taking in as much information as they could in the dimly lot space he found himself in: cast iron bars stood in place of one wall, and he was chained to the opposite wall, which was made of brick and mortar, and covered in a thick coat of dust. He thought back to the last thing he could remember: he knew he’d been shot. He was just outside of Jump City, and he turned to Raven to ask…
Oh God… Raven.
A light peered out from down the corridor just as the thought occurred to him, and a man appeared on the other side of the bars. His face was hidden beneath a mask, but the scope mounted on his eye was a dead giveaway of his identity: Floyd Lawton.
“Oh, good. You finally woke up,” Deadshot mumbled. “You’ve been out for four days.”
Damian slumped over, hung upright by the chains on his wrists, dead silent.
“Look, kid, this ain’t anything personal…” the assassin went on. “And I hope you know I don’t kill kids. That’s a personal rule. I wouldn’t have shot you if I didn’t know you’d live. But for the price my client put on you? Well… sorry it had to hurt so bad. Bullet was filled with a tranquilizer, so you prob'ly passed out before the pain hit you.”
Damian raised his head, his eyes wide with fear.
“… I need the money for my baby girl. I hope you understand that.” Lawton’s voice showed a touch of sympathy as he spoke. “I know they’re gonna put you through it down here. But I have to take care of my daughter.” The hitman turned away from the bars and looked down at floor. “… my client should be here in a few weeks. I’m sorry it had to go down like this… I’ll be back in a few hours to feed ya. Sit tight, kid.” He started back down the hall, presumably towards the exit…
“… Raven.”
Lawton stopped, turning back to the boy chained up in the cell. “Say again?”
Damian looked into the glowing red scope, where he knew Deadshot could see him. “What… what did you do to my Raven…?”
Lawton grimaced underneath his mask. “Oh… the girl…” he let out a hefty sigh. “My client sent a squad with me to make sure the job got done. Once I put one in your chest, she pulled it right back out, and looks like she closed up the hole too. I…” He shook his head. “They were already on her by the time I came to grab you. Nobody could have lived through that kinda beatin’. I wasn’t gonna get into it, because they prob'ly woulda killed me too. I’m…” Lawton turned and walked back towards the exit. “I’m sorry.”
Damian’s whole body went completely numb. Raven was his silver lining. She was the woman he would hang up his cape for. She was the rain that washed the sins from his soul.
She was his life. She was his heart. She was his everything.
And now, she was dead.
Titans Tower, Jump City. March 11th, 2018. 1:34 AM.
“Jon…”
Raven squinted her eyes as the light flooded into her eyes. Judging by the IV needle she could feel in her arm, the constant beeping of her heart monitor, and the sight of a fresh change of clothes folded up on the mattress beside her, she put two and together to realize that she was back in the Tower Infirmary. Superboy sat unconscious in a chair by her bed, his favorite jacket pulled over his body like a blanket. As soon as she said his name, his eyes opened, and he jumped up to her bedside.
“Raven!” He whispered. “Thank goodness you’re awake! It’s been almost eight days, we were starting to worry that you might not get up…”
“Jon, listen to me.” Raven placed a hand on his to get his attention. “I need you to tell Kori I’m going back to Gotham.
Jon looked her worriedly. "R… Raven, I can’t let you do that. Not by yourself, and especially not right now. You were barely alive when you got back to the Tower, we can’t just–”
“Jon, I’m fine.” Raven sat up, using her magic to restore her strength as she pulled the IV from her arm. “But someone’s kidnapped Damian. I have to find him.”
“No! You don’t have to just run off on your own!” Jon gently placed a hand on Raven’s shoulder. “We’re a team, remember? Let us help you, and we can figure out where–”
“NO.” Raven grabbed Jon by both shoulders as she hopped down from the bed. “No… Jonathan, I have to do this alone… he’s my Damian. I have to take care of him.”
Jon looked into Raven’s eyes for a moment, then let out a sigh in defeat. “… Be careful. Bring him home safe.”
Raven wrapped her arms around Jon’s neck and hugged him tightly. “Thank you, Jon. I promise, we’ll be back as soon as we can.”
Jon put his arms around her, squeezing her gently. “Just… don’t get hurt. You two are the best friends I’ve got.”
Raven stepped back, and changed into her fresh outfit as soon as Jon left the room. Once she was ready, she summoned up a portal and stepped into the Batcave, where Bruce and Carrie were waiting, ready to attack. As soon as they realized who she was, the both of them relaxed.
“Good to see you’re awake,” Batman said grimly, pulling the cowl off of his face. “I’ve already been scanning all of California for a signal from Damian’s tracker, but I haven’t found anything yet.”
Raven looked up at Bruce, recognizing Damian’s icy blue eyes staring back at her. “I don’t think he’s in California anymore. Search everywhere. Not just the country–everywhere.”
