Blog Intro (old ver Oct 8th 2022)

about time I finally organized this lol

Hello friends and enemies. My name is Dionysus/Denise (all pronouns) and this is where I put stuff related to my writing / polytheism / Classics / theology. 

I post and reblog things related to Hellenic polytheism, Chinese folk religion, early Christianity, and occasionally witchcraft. I share my own creative writing pieces or essays related to these topics, and I also reblog academia and Classics related things or the occasional research article. 

I’m currently a college student studying in the States (I am from China), and I made this blog to engage with the online Polytheism community. In my personal projects, I am very interested in theology & philosophy and am attempting to build one regarding polytheism. I’m a big fan of interfaith activity and am quite eclectic in my practice. I’m not a big neo-platonist; I lean heavily on post-modernism/ psychanalysis/ queer theory in my theological thinking. I’m currently attempting (and failing) to study Ancient Greek. I’m very open to any kinds of asks on any of the topics of interest, or just random stuff. 

Polytheism-wise, I’m devoted to Dionysus, and engage a lot with Apollo, though a lot of deities are in my life. I also love engaging with Satyrs in terms of their creative power. Personally, I find Freud very Bacchic, and I think Foucault was possibly the Pythia (yes, Foucault, prophecize the fall of western civilization, do it). Gnostically, I identify with the demiurge because of my being a writer (yes this is a very serious blog as you can tell). Politically, I am an Anarchist and that makes me the spiciest Zeus worshipper alive.

love yourself for your flaws, not in spite of them.

i have never loved bits and pieces of a person, wishing i could just discard the rest. my love is whole, given to an entire person, everything included. our flaws and our beauty come together as a package, inseparable; no one should ever be expected to sieve out parts of themselves for anyone else.

in truth, it's the tiny imperfections that make a person who they are. i find it endearing that my boyfriend often speaks just a little too loud indoors, or that he beats an egg with a spoon (why not use a fork you big buffoon?). i love how my best friend fails to notice details and is one big unobservant, gullible mess, because it makes surprising her so much easier.

and in turn, i try to give that same love to myself, for all of my curves and divets i wish i could just trim off, for my clumsy hands that are always capable of breaking something (always), for the chaotic but beautiful mind i can never seem to switch off. i love myself wholeheartedly, and that includes all of my flaws, each and every one of them.

nostalgia

I’d like to live in the attic,

amongst the old, once cherished treasures that sit dead and unused.

I’d like to be surrounded by meaning.

There isn’t enough meaning on the first floor.

It’s warmer up in the attic; there are floral, moth-bitten blankets to drape around my shoulders.

It’s cold down here.

My shoulders are bare and my teeth chatter a pleading song for life to have meaning again.

Can I be honest?

I just feel like, as writers, we need to promote each other’s work— validate and encourage one another, comment every once and while, reblog and share and just let each other know their words aren’t wasted space. That their words matter and we give a damn and we want them to keep writing, because writing is fucking hard. And often terrifying. I mean, sometimes it feels like standing on a stage facing hundreds (maybe thousands), in the middle of a spotlight, being asked to strip naked while everyone just stares. It takes hours sometimes to build up the courage to post that single sentence, paragraph, or page. So if you’re a writer reading this, or know a writer, or want to be a writer, don’t just pass up a post that makes you stop and stare. Do that writer a favor— show them some love and support.

Writing Blind#14: Five types of love interest

So it’s that beautiful time of year once more and in the spirit of Valentine’s Day and love I thought, sod it and have chosen to do my bit in the name of love and make a little list. Because if you cant beat them, join them until you can beat them. Across the spectrum of stories there are a variety of love interests and relationships we have been graced with; so today lets take a look at a few of the one that came to mind.

Classical Damsel

Now lets start with one that most of us would wish never to see again unless its a trope subversion. Occasionally the damsel love interest can be done well but often it isn't. I think this is just a sign of the changing times but nowadays a damsel in distress usually exists as a love interest more to comment on the state of a particular genre. Or perhaps it can be used for comedic purposes. To be honest with this one there is still a lot of mileage to be had from it however its actual use to a story I think is going to be quite limited in todays society. I mean I love the Mario games but when you have to rescue Peach for the umpteenth time it gets a bit ridiculous. 

Active Love Interest

Now it feels that part of the active love interest existence was down to a reaction against the Classic Damsel. However in spite of this the Active love interest has evolved remarkably well. Now I know you’re wondering what exactly do I mean - essentially I am referring to a love interest who is actively moving not only the plot but also the relationship forward. Essentially out of the pairing they are the more dominant one. The one trying new things and pushing forward bravely. Now this isn't to say that the character in a relationship with them has to contrast against this but it would make for interesting characters. An active love interest is typically portrayed as being a butch person or a soldier but this doesn't have to be the case. There are ways to do this so it works well and doesn't seem derivative but I’ d advise caution so as not to try too hard with this kind of love interest.

Opposites Attract

Now I don't know why exactly but this one is a favourite. I don't know why but I've always liked the idea of two people who are complete opposite falling in love. Now this comes in two distinct forms. The first is where they are some form of rival and fight each other for awhile before eventually coming to some form of understanding between each other. I know some people hate this version but I find it lovely that they could fall in love despite having something they butt heads over. Even if this only amounts to a friendly rivalry I would be satisfied. The other distinct form is the classic idea of two people in opposition who get together. Now this could range from being from two separate worlds or even be in the greater extreme like being from rival kingdoms or families. Essentially the key element to these relationships seems to be some form of rivalry that is the catalyst for the characters to meet. Through a series of circumstances this will eventually evolve into love; the path is different but the destination usually will be the same.

Tragic Lovers

Come on, we’ve all read or at least heard about Romeo and Juliet and there is a reason why their story is so famous and resonates with us. There’s something oddly appealing about tragedy, something oddly cathartic about watching two lovers get together even if we are aware or not that ultimately they are destined for failure. It leaves a sad taste in our mouths to be sure but still I find it oddly sweet. When a couple is destined for tragedy you seems to cherish the relationship even more. Plus if its the first time you’re reading the book you could be spending the entire time on the edge of your seat just waiting for the tragedy to unfold. I’ve found that when the tragedy does happen I end up stuck with a strange feeling of near melancholy that makes me happy to have read about the couple but sad that they are no longer together.

The Power Couple

Oh the power couple. Wherever they go they dominate completely to the point where some could even say it was obscene or excessive. I mean honestly, this pair would walk onto a battlefield and single-handedly destroy an army. They are bloody spectacular and you can’t not look at them and at least be inspired. Some could argue that their indominable status makes them unrealistic or unrelatable but what I've always found is that their not meant to be realistic. It more that they are an ideal that we can push ourselves to achieve. When a power couple enters a book you can b sure you’ll be in for a good show. And even better, whilst it’s good to have these guys on the side of the heroes its even more intriguing to see them on the side of the villain. I’ve watched shows where this is the case and it’s a really interesting dynamic. Plus the power couple does end up sharing a room with the tragic couple since often a power couple can slip down the path to a tragic one. There’ s only so much room for perfection.

Well I hope you all enjoyed folks as I personally found it bloody hard work. I’m not really the kind of person who’s a fan of romance stories but I've read enough books to understand what contributes to an actually entertaining and well done relationship/ love interest in a novel. Nonetheless I hope you all enjoyed my little piece.

So ~hypothetically~ I’ve been slowly chipping away at my WIP, Greener, for about 5 years now. My best friend has her own tumblr where she freaks out with other people about her own book (@ettawritesnstudies) and I’ve loved getting to watch that, so here I am trying to do something similar! My book is a hot mess with characters that are an even hotter mess but I hope people can enjoy the chaos with me.

So, to give a general plot overview: My book takes place after WW3 which saw the public murder all the world leaders because everyone was horribly corrupt and essentially bringing about our own capitalist doomsday. Obviously without any form of government chaos followed, anarchy bloomed and life generally sucks.

One society went “hell no” to anarchy, decided to pretend the war never happened, and go about life as normal. However, the leaders are terrified of the people rebelling, so corruption follows in an attempt to stop this. The government tries to control every aspect of the people’s lives, selecting who is allowed into higher education, who you are to marry, what you do with your life, what you eat, how you live, etc. Arguably, the most oppressive act is that the public (starting from 18 and older) must take medication that suppresses any and all strong personality traits and feelings. They aren’t gone completely, but it keeps people from feeling more than a standard deviation from a general contented happy, so that they are easily controlled and less likely to rebel like the citizens of the last war did.

My book follows a girl named Adelaide who was born to a group unaffiliated with the Society, but due to her own physical and mental health problems fell in love with their easy way of life and decided to sneak in. She is shoehorned in with the rest of the elite golden children and has to learn for herself if the grass is really greener on the other side.

Do you ever experience that peculiar feeling nestled in between sadness and apathy?

No, that’s not exactly how I’d describe it -- I’m okay. I’m fine. Not depressed, but not content either. I’m okay, but I wish I wasn’t.

I don’t like feeling such muddled, lifeless emotions. If I’m not feeling ecstatic, orgasmic, indescribable happiness, if my cheeks don’t ache and my lips don’t tremble from ceaseless smiles, if I’m not experiencing blissful, euphoric, drug-like love, then I’d rather be hopelessly depressed with no will to continue on living.

Hacked, and racked . Had to put the computer down.  It wasnt my fault just someone in China, No Offense on the chinese but they do seem quite capable of hackathons. I am just a poor ordinary human with little useful information on my computer so Can you hack somebody else from now on?  Oh  there about   $ 10.75 on my Amazon account you can have it if you just don’t hack attack me. Ya know there are betters ways of making money than trying to buy things on Ebay with someone else's credit.  And for a twenty dollar toaster, boy talk about the nickel and dime scheme.  If you have the intelligence to hack it, why not get a job? there are plenty out there that could use your skills.
