16-year old Satoru had never known much about compassion, or any crucial emotions that would’ve paved the way for him to be a brilliant jujutsu sorcerer, through and through. He lived life as he went, nonchalant and never dispatching empathy in the moments it mattered most. You appeared like wildfire, ringing out so many emotions from him all at once. You were placed on his team without warning, and he felt like you were just another nuisance for him to have to pretend to worry about. You were undeniably cute though, which was the only reason he ever made conversation with you from time to time. But even though he flirted with you, he was always sure to remind you that he was always better, stronger and more talented.

One day, to his surprise, you gave him a piece of your mind when he tried to pursue you. You told him to learn some manners, some compassion, and to come back when he wasn’t an asshole. You expressed that he was arrogant, and all but so many people would tolerate him the way some teachers and his so called “team mates” did.

“No ones going to fall in love with you for real if you keep being a jerk.”

That was when he first learned of rejection. He was so used to having everything he wanted. It didn’t register in his brain the first time that you didn’t like him. He picked on you more because of it, unfortunately. You were thick skulled, and headstrong. You were charming for someone who started out so weak. He watched as you worked hard, and never asked for help from him or Suguru, or Shoko unless it was for the sake of the mission at hand. You were extremely talented. Just a late bloomer.

He asked you why you became a sorcerer one day, much to your surprise. You explained it to him and from that day on, he wasn't so much of an asshole towards you. He’d learned of admiration, but considering he was so cocky, he never did tell you that. Instead, he went from saying things like “Leave this to us” to “I’ll leave this to you.”

Maybe you do or don’t realize that he finally acknowledges you as strong, but you do know talking to him was 40% more bearable when you reached your third year of high school.

That same year, you lose someone who was close to you. You had no control over it. The way it happened, the result was inevitable. It had nothing to do with weakness or being in the wrong place at the wrong time. There are some outcomes in life that are meant to happen- and no one is ready for it. All he knows is that he didn’t like how it made you feel. He couldn’t give you a rebuttal on how it was possibly yours or someone else’s shortcomings that fated such a thing to happen. Instead, you both sat on the steps of the school long past curfew, sharing ice cream while he watched you cry. Neither of you spoke. For the first time in his life, he had nothing to say. He also knew he shouldn’t leave you there. He hoped his silence and presence would convey something, along with the free ice cream. This was the night Satoru learned sympathy.

He never wanted you to feel that way ever again. He became a bubbly force, always in your face. He smothered you with activities, sweets, things that became memories to deter you from your loss, and somehow amongst it all, you forgot that you hated him.

Some years had gone by. You'd become a fine jujutsu sorcerer, with the help of Satoru and so many others. You’d acknowledged him as a friend and possibly something more due his flirtatious personality. He had became someone who filled the void of the person you lost, showing you that life does in fact go on.

“It took you way too long to kill that thing,” he rolled his eyes. “Aren’t you a special grade jujutsu sorcerer? Get it together (Name).”

He playfully scolded you. “You literally stood there and watched me do all the work.” Your clothes were stained of blood, but you weren’t bothered entirely. You were looking for something to wipe your hands with, shaking them violently at the ground.

“What can I say, you’re truly a site to behold.” He winked, dwindling a handkerchief in front of you. The flutter in your chest was erratic.

“Nonetheless, I knew you could do it. I was just here for moral support.” He grinned, patting you on the head.

“Satoru,” You say, turning towards him and sheathing your weapon. “You’re really important to me. You’ve had my back since we went to Jujutsu Tech and then some. I don’t think I’ve ever said thank you for always being there for me.”

“So, thank you.” You say, offering him the warmest smile and making his heart skip a beat. He hadn’t known what to say. You hadn't ever put him on the spot like this before, which is what it made it so easy for him to be around you. You never praised him for anything, yet here you were thanking him, smiling at him like you loved him or something-

Did you? He wondered. He didn’t undertsand what it was he felt when he started to ponder the idea of you loving him. You never once complimented him on his looks, nor had you ever reciprocated his flirtations. And here he was, actively being your friend because he admired your character. He didn’t even know himself anymore.

“Stop staring at me like that and say you’re welcome.” You sass, breaking him out of his thoughts. “You’re freaking me out.”

“We’re friends. You don’t have to thank me for that.” He said cockily, getting right back in character. That night, he realized what it meant to love someone.

He got home and laid in bed, trying to draw the line in his head between how he loved you and how he loved kikufuku. Then he tried depicting the differences between his bromance with Geto Suguru and his friendship with you. He knew he liked being around you, and whatever goals in life he would eventually pursue- he wanted you to be there too.

You never once made it obvious that you liked him back in any sort of way, and it ticked him off. He would spend some days doing everything in his power to get a reaction out of you, even a kabedon, to which you burst out laughing in response. Satoru had never actually experienced true defeat until that moment. You had became one of the most precious things in the world to him, but he thought you were so dense and oblivious it pained him. He wanted to give up on pursuing you, but no one else in his entire life had ever made him feel anything. All these emotions he discovered were extensions and results of you allowing him to integrate himself into your life during your darkest moment. You had thanked him for being there; he wanted you to say so much more.

So when you leapt in front of him, coughing up blood in his direction and shielding his body, there wasn't a reason he could summon for it. What made him feel sick to his stomach is how you managed to smile whilst being impaled by the horns of the curse behind you. The rough taste of iron plagued your tongue and blood plopped from your lips and down your chin.

He caught your body with one arm, cradling you, before using his free hand to clutch the creature’s skull. He smashed it instantly, blood spattering all around your bodies.

“Why did you do that?” He found himself panicking. He knelt down, stripping himself of his shirt and attempting to suppress the bleeding. “You’re not weak and you’re not stupid- why?!”

“Because, Satoru, I love you.” You say through blurry eyes. He’s petrified. Satoru Gojo did not know loss or grief. He was sure to feel it if you died right there in his arms. He already killed the curse that fatally attacked you. If you died, what would his purpose beyond that be? The only thing he hadn’t done yet was tell you he loved you. He knew in that moment that he loved you. But before the words could fall from his lips, your body went limp in his lap.

“No...” He took hold of you, immediately teleporting to the nearest hospital. If you died, he would blame it on his own incompetence. He’d flaw himself for this moment alone and take responsibility. He found himself praying to whatever God there might be, begging them to spare your short lived life. Not without him saying it back.

After multiple surgeries and blood transfusions, the doctors had informed him you were going to live, but recovery would take some time. Your cursed ability was able to delay the blood loss and neutralize a bit of the damage just before it became entirely fatal. He was thankful, the most he’s ever been for anything.

“I told you, you’re not weak,” he stared down at your comatose body. “You may make stupid decisions. But you’re not helpless.”

His voice cracked a bit whilst saying this, as he knelt beside you. He would stay with you endlessly through your recovery no matter how long it took. Nothing else mattered.

He was going to tell you that he loves you too.

If you are, can you do it for a boy? I’m generally considered tall (I’m 5’7”) and I have really curly brown hair with green eyes and really pale skin. I’m Irish-American and I’m an Aries. My hobbies are; photography, reading thriller or historical fiction novels, writing fanfiction, and listening to music (specifically punk rock or really obnoxiously loud Irish rock). I’m quite shy when it comes to new situations or places and I have an anxiety disorder, so I’m usually quite anxious and generally considered quiet (which makes my music choices ironic). Before people get to know me, people think I’m a b*tch or that I’m cold because I tend to stick with the same people and not generally talk to others unless I’m forced. Even my friends have said they thought I was mean before they actually met me. I can be pessimistic at times, but I care about the people I’m really close with and I’ll defend them no matter the situation. I can be annoying, I overthink everything, and I am insecure about literally anything and everything about myself (from my body to my writing)

I’m generally considered one of the smarter ones in my friend group, usually my friends come to me when it comes to writing essays or having to read a book for class, since I’m good at analyzing things. I’m the friend that usually everyone tries to protect from things, from fear that I might “break” or something like that, which can be annoying but I know it means that they care. Though I would prefer that people be straight forward and honest with me instead of walk on eggshells or keep secrets, because contrary to popular belief, I can defend myself just fine. My friends say I have a hard time letting people in since I don’t want to end up hurt, so I have a tendency to keep people at arms length because I’m afraid to have my heart broken.

Majima is the best way to explain yakuza, its very funny one minute, hahaha funny face man does break dancing as a fighting style, and the next moment he is face with the decision to either kill an innocent woman to get back to the world he has been dying to live in again or let her live and live a life of hiding and protecting her from those that set you out to kill here. Majima has so many layers, that are all centred around one core theme, his sworn brother Taiga Saejima or his kyoudai. Majima on his own is amazing but he gets better when he is whole...

Saejima is hands down one of my fav characters in yakuza, his arc throughout the games is just brilliant but i especially like his first game, at first you think he is a cold no nonsense killer convicted for killing 18 people making him a legend in the yakuza world (and they say yakuza is a silly game ahaha... they dont know shit) many years after the events of yakuza 0 Saejima breaks out with his new friend Hamazaki (who i may write a blog post later) once he is out Hamazaki is shot and we presume he is dead. now Saejima is on the run to look for his kyoudai for answers, he may have to kill majima or maybe he doesnt...

AAAAAA man Makoto is so interesting, a blind woman who falls for a Yakuza, a yakuza she doesnt know the name of. he is this mysterious protector figure who always looks out for here and the people around her to the best of his ability. to her she is not the yakuza with the tattoo on his back, instead he is him, simply a man she loves, she knows that he is a man that is there to protect her from something, something bigger than the both of them, a yakuza war over a bit of land... land that is owned by none other than Makimura Makoto.

Jumping back to Majima for a moment, his chemistry with Makoto (the woman he is meant to kill) is brilliant, at first i thought it was a protective fatherly thing, but slowly it became obvious it was a... ahem thing... yeah slowly he is falling in love while this woman has never seen his face or heard his name bc she was traumatised to the point of mental blindless. as they fall in love it becomes clearer and clearer that the lives they must live are very different. bc of the this and the fact that Makoto gets shot by the Tojo Clan for (yakuza 0 plot reasons) Majima goes fucking insane, instead of this calm and collected character we met in The Grand we get this fucking love sick man (heh reminded me of BlackPink but i digress) who just wants to avenge the only one who he truly loved (sorta yakuza 5)... and this is the birth of The Mad Dog of Shimano. man the scenes leading up to his break made me so angry i was fully for Majima going mad dog on the cunts, it felt so good beating the shit out of some of them in the finale and it felt bittersweet for some... man Awano, but thats a talk for another day.

Jumping back to Saejima, after breaking out he washes ashore of a small island nation by the name of Okinawa, fans of the series know this place as the home of Kiryu and his orphanage. soon someone stumbles upon Saejima and takes him in, the person is of course Haruka Sawamura (the daughter of Kiryu). Saejima regains his consciousness and chats for a bit with Haruka, but then ummm... yeah ummm... i dont really want to type out what happened next, so lets just say that Saejima hasnt seen a woman in a long time (jesus i hate this scene and i am not defending it i am just trying to put it as nicely as possible). soon, in comes Kiryu who very quickly sees what happened and and realises who Saejima is, bc who wouldnt, but as they get to talking Saejima makes up a fake name and Kiryu goes along with it. blah blah storyy Majima sadness

AAAAAAAANND they fight. Kiryu fights in yakuza games (where you fight against him) always put the fear of a thousand suns inside you, they are so good at making you be like "OH SHIT i know that move" and then "Oh god i dont know that move what the fuck Kiryu a fucking beast" the fight ends and Saejima "wins" bc before he can finish Kiryu off Haruka comes in and has to be the voice of logic and reason, all things that sissies worry about, and she stops the fight...

now skipping way way way ahead to going to meet Majima you go to see him fight his lackies and then he comes down from the stairs, and for a man that rarely ever emotes you can see how happy Saejima is even through his tough face. Majima and Saejima walk to the batting cages for their fight, they talk about why Saejima is there and what is going to happen, its clear Majima isnt gonna go down without kicking, bc in his mind it would be disrespectful to Saejima if he didnt give him a show, in any case, it could be Majima's last.

its so amazing doing this fight, bc its been built up since fucking yakuza 0 and when you do it you are just like "YEAAHHHH HIT HIM HARDER WOOOOOO" and when its over you are brought back to the earth and you have to think, at what cost? this reuniting scene is one of the best, its so sad and so exciting, all you can think leading up to it is how it went for Kiryu and Nishikiyama, its just very well done.

The 2 chat for a bit and Saejima asks about the eyepatch Majima explains why he didnt show when they where supposed to do the hit, the very same hit that landed Saejima in jail. the reason being he was taken hostage by one of the family heads, and he explains that bc he gave them such hell the only way to shut him up was to take one of his eyes, Saejima laughs, now its clear, the kyoudais are back together and stronger than ever.

it is very very clear to me that Saejima and Majima are 2 parts of a greater whole, there is no Majima without Saejima and there is not Saejima without Majima. its beautiful how the insanity of Majima and the stoicism of Saejima mix so well, i think its beautifully shown in the Yakuza LaD scene when they do their attack, that gif is just brilliant at showing how they compliment each other haha. (sorry couldnt find the gif)

Majima and Saejima show us some people are worth it and even if they are worth it, sometimes the best call is to let them go, i of course have to finish what i started. awhile after Majima takes out the Tojo Clan, he goes on a walk, finally free from everything... and he sees her, there she is happy and she looks him dead in the eye (NO THE PUNS TODAY AAAAAAA) and doesnt see him for the protector she once did when she was blind, now seeing him as a flashy yakuza with a tattoo on his back, Majima doesnt speak knowing she would recognise the voice. soon, a man who looks like her boyfriend comes and says "Hey is this man worrying you" and in one swift move Majima takes him and talk to him heart to heart, asking "do you love her" and "will you look after her", the boyfriend is very confused and a bit scared, after all a yakuza with one eye is grabbing him talking in a very scary tone. the man answers yes and Majima walks away into the crowd, Makoto trails him with her eyes until there is nothing to see and she goes on with her life....

yeah sometimes when you love someone so much, the only okay thing to do is to let them go bc you know you would only bring them more pain if you stayed together... in a way, it would be selfish, robbing them of a normal life. this is exactly how Majima at this point sees it, and i respect him for it, maybe in the future they will meet again, and maybe just MAYBE, they will finally get proper closure that they deserve, but until then i will say goodbye and thanks for taking time out of your life to read my stupid little essay

I see you mentioned dad and son origami? May we expand upon that?

we may indeed - just a note that this starts with origami but branches into general crafting

roman actually initiated the origami as a way of secretly getting patton to help with decorations for the garden wedding without even knowing that it was going to happen

because it's a lot of work to make hundreds of rainbow origami flowers and roman is a busy guy

patton is of course none the wiser and when roman suggests it he doesnt think twice about it because roman is always trying out new crafting ideas and he would love to be able to help with that

but yeah that backfired a bit when patton was (no offence) completely awful at it

he actually feels a little bit embarrassed about it because this has happened a few times before and it keeps happening everytime he tries a new type of craft

when roman got polymer clay and started making his own dolls patton wanted in on it because that looks so cool that you can design your own toys!

but he just couldn't get the hang of smoothing off the edges and he didn't realise that you need quite a solid understanding of human anatomy to be able to sculpt faces

roman is obviously supportive and he bakes pattons toy to set it and ... they both silently agree not to paint his one because it looks like an eldritch horror as it is, but no worries because roman made three in the time it took patton to make that one so patton is allowed to help paint roman's!

and after janus taught roman how to crochet patton actually asked roman to teach him too because he wanted to learn how to make scarves and hats and stuff for his family since winter was approaching (he was a bit reluctant to ask janus because of how badly the crafting attempts had gone in the past)

and as eager as patton was to give it a go, he couldnt help how frustrated he got whenever he dropped a stitch (which happened every few seconds) and how dejected he felt when he held the hat up and all it resembled was a very holey, warped, uneven shape of wool that wouldn't have stayed on anyones head - despite roman awkwardly insisting that it was perfect and holding it on his head with quite a desperate smile

so after all of these failed attempts pat has pretty much given up on crafting, his fingers aren't nimble enough, his touch isn't gentle enough, his brain isnt creative enough and he doesnt admit it but it makes him feel pretty useless

before he realises what he's doing he has set the oven to preheat and is taking out the baking equipment

he likes to bake when he's stuck in his head, the smells ground him and the repetitive tasks soothe him and someone almost always comes into the kitchen either to join in or to jsut sit on the counter and talk to patton as he bakes, complimenting the delicious smells

it's roman this time, and he's little too which really soothes the heaviness in pattons chest because he gets to be a dad for a bit and forget about feeling like he isnt good at anything

once the cupcakes have left the oven and theyre cool enough to decorate, patton asks ro if he wants to help but surprisingly the little prince refuses and says he just wants to watch his dad do it

its a bit surprising but patton doesnt force it and starts to ice them and as ro rambles about what he learned from the latest episode of his favourite cartoon the icing becomes more elaborate and intricate

by the time patton has finished there are two dozen cupcakes all decorated with beautfiful flowers and twirling vines and theres even some little woodland animals peeking through leaves and branches like a red squirrel and a hedgehog and a few rabbits (because he knows baby vee will squeal with excitement at seeing "buwwies" on the cakes)

and this doesnt even register with patton as a craft because this is just what he's always done, and crafts aren't meant to be eaten right? the baked goods are always gone within a few days, and he doesnt do it to be artistic like roman he does it because he loves the bright smiles on his family's faces when their birthday cakes are decorated with their favourite things

but roman is in awe 'wow dad these are so pretty!!'

patton shrugs and cchuckles 'theyre just cupcakes, sweetie'

'no theyre not' roman looks at him as if he's just said something really outlandish and frowns 'theyre not just cupcakes, theyre art'

and when patton looks back down at the cooling rack filled with bright colours it just really suddenly clicks in his head that, wow, he made these... with his hands which he thought were clumsy and talentless

he doesnt need to be good at crafting, people all have different skills. but it makes him so soft that he can actually claim to have some artistic skill because it's one way he really feels connected to his little prince

and roman is so proud of him he takes a bunch of photos of them and insists patton puts them in his scrapbook and patton does so with a smile and a warm, light feeling in his chest

eheh ok well. heres an insane amount of words about Funy Half Life Characters

i mean like the thing i think about the most is how exactly they deal with, like, everything that Happened between them. like its benreys fault he got his arm cut off, man. even if (theoretically, in my personal headcanon) benrey doesnt exactly Grasp a lot of the shit he did that pissed gordon off (like ok taking the whole “what happened to your arm???” thing at face value, instead of as the (obvious) joke that it is? it makes me feel like he didnt understand the consequences of his actions as much as.....like.....somebody who Gets human shit would), they still gotta like talk about that shit eventually if they wanna get to know each other as anything more than enemies, or frenemies, or “dudes with a fragile detente in place who sometimes play video games and fuck”

and like.....i feel like the way benrey doesnt Get things isnt necessarily, like, entirely in good faith either......if that makes sense.....he seems like he deliberately doesnt Get things, and he can be kind of malicious about what he decides to wrap his head around and what he doesnt. like, hes deliberately obtuse, bu then sometimes hes actually obtuse, and i think that can be difficult to deal with as like......a real trait, instead of just a “haha funny improv character” trait.

his method of just completely dropping a topic if he doesnt know how to riff off it/make it funny (as an improv thing) is also something that is not super conducive to building a Real Relationship if you go full “death of the author” and interpret it as, just, not giving a shit about topics that dont interest him/are emotionally difficult

and gordon is like. Neurotic. hes anxious, hes depressed, hes got PTSD, hes graying at 27, etc. (okay like 2 of those things are just headcanons but whatever, they fit.) he probably isnt coping well with jack shit after black mesa! (and thats, yknow, how i write him.) before he can handle, like, a capital r-Relationship, he really needs to work on his own shit instead of fucking a dude with a massive crush on him. but, uhhh, too late, lmao. you work with what youve got. and, like, theres a lot of......working around each other that they would need to learn how to do if they ever wanted to be anything more than “friends with benefits who sometimes feel a certain way about each other”.

benreys got like that distinctly non-normative way of viewing the world and interacting with people (and, you know, i know that this is just a personal interpretation of an amalgam of behaviors primarily intended to be funny, but im already in this deep so why pretend like im not taking this a little seriously) and he also seems like he just gets a kick out of fucking with gordon.

and gordon thinks his off-beat behavior is so fucking funny, which is like, the foundation of why he likes benrey so much (and come on. weve all watched the same shit. weve all seen how much hes like “its not like im worried about benrey or anything but also oh god where the fuck is benrey”), but again, when theyre not, like, forced to be around each other by circumstance, that means that theyve actually gotta........learn to bend around each other. theyve gotta tear down whatever stupid acts theyre putting on and figure out how to just be Genuine with each other

and thats why i think it would take a good long while post-canon for them to figure each other out and really develop solid Feelings-feelings for each other. that shits hard. they clearly both like each other a lot but they also clearly love getting under each others skin (which is what i, personally, love about them). i like writing shit where theyre committing to the bit, right? putting on an act, playing the game.

being vulnerable is a lot fucking harder and thats why im starting that shit with benrey and gordon getting crossfaded and gordons Massive Emotional Repression being torn down and just letting all the bad feelings out. its gotta get worse before it gets better. benrey tried to kill him man. even if it may not have meant the same thing to benrey that it did to gordon, they still gotta, like, deal with it, man

Okay :) Can you please do a college au-ish thing where patton is stressed and Logan calms him down? (Also it doesnt have to be, but if you can keep it on the shorter side that would be cool. I cant read things that are super long cuz I lose focus and it gets difficult to read).

before anything, i do have to admit that i legitimately tried (and failed) to make this short. besides that, was still pretty fun to write so yay

Summary: Logan's been helping out Patton for a while when it comes to studying for their college classes. But when finals roll around, it isn't such an easy process, and poor Patton starts getting stressed out. So, Logan tries to distract him for a while to see if it helps calm him down.

When Roman and Virgil get word of what he's doing, they try to make all hell break loose.

And because they do, Logan's plan works a lot better than he thought it would.

Patton threw down his pencil in frustration and put his head in his hands. He had been working hard at studying for this final of his, and he almost had everything down. There was just one problem he wasn’t getting no matter how hard he tried, and it was stressing him out way more than he wanted it to.

Logan had sat beside him this whole time. He had offered a while ago to help Patton out with studying, and it proved to be more successful than any other help Patton had gotten before. This one session, however, was definitely the most difficult. Logan wasn’t even able to figure out how to solve the problem, which was rare.

And because of that, Patton got even more stressed out.

Logan racked his brain for a solution. Something, anything to get them both away from the stress for a while.

He finally thought of something. It seemed a bit basic, but it was something. Better than nothing.

“Hey, Patton?” He got the other boy’s attention. “How about we stop studying for right now?”

“Stop studying?” Patton said with a scoff. “Am I hearing you correctly, Lo? Have you been replaced?”

“Yes, you heard me perfectly. And, no, I haven’t been replaced,” he assured the other with a laugh. “I know you’re definitely stressed out right now, which does not create optimal studying results.”

Patton nodded. “I guess you’re right.”

“To continue with my point, I think that your stress can be reduced with more than just not studying. I think you need to distract yourself from just schoolwork in general. Just for a bit. It might allow you to reestablish the focus that will get you that answer you need.”

“Okay then. What do you suggest we do?” Patton asked, looking Logan right in the eye.

��That is for me to know and for you to find out. Now, follow me.” He got up from where they were sitting, closing his textbooks with emphasis. He crossed his arms as he waited for Patton to follow.

Patton didn’t like not knowing what he was up to, but he got up and went along with it anyways. Logan had walked out to his car, gesturing for Patton to get in before him. The other obeyed, knowing there wasn’t a way for him to get out of it.

They ended up arriving at Starbucks, of all places. Patton was ultimately surprised.

“Why...did we come here?” he asked almost right away. “If you wanted coffee, I could have just made ya some there at my place.”

“Yes, you very well could have,” Logan agreed. “However, I think both of us just needed to get away from there for a while. I’ll explain. By staying at home, you’re more likely to think about studying, particularly the stress from it, since it’s easily accessible to you. I’ve removed both of us as an attempt to relax us in an environment that is not associated at all with the stressor, which in this case is the act of studying itself and anything relating to it. If we’re not around it, it’s easier to forget about it unless we actively choose to think about it all the time. Does that make sense?”

Patton was a bit overwhelmed by the lengthy explanation but understood it for the most part. “So you’re saying not being around my house is gonna make it easier to calm down?”

“More or less. You can take some time to think about something else for a while. Give yourself a mental break before going back there.”

Patton nodded. “That would probably work. Gosh, Logan, you’re so good at thinking of these kinds of things! I don’t know how you do it.”

Logan softly smiled at the compliment, attempting to seem less affected by it than he really was. “Just a natural talent, I suppose. Shall we go in now?”

The two headed in, noticing a rather large line right off the bat. The possibility of waiting disenchanted Patton from the idea a little bit. “Maybe we should just go back. Waiting too long is gonna take away from our study time…”

“Patton, what did we just discuss? You are not to mention studying the entire time we are here. And we’re staying, no matter how long the line is. Besides, I think it won’t take too long.”

Patton sighed. “Fine.”

Logan turned his head slightly to look at the other. “Why don’t you find us a table to sit at while you wait? I’ll order for you.”

“I guess I can do that…” He reluctantly walked off to a table on the other end of the place. Logan watched him the entire time, only turning his attention back to the registers once Patton sat down.

It didn’t take Logan long to reach the front of the line. During his wait, he recited the order a couple times in his head, glanced at Patton, checked his phone, and looked at the menu just in case he wanted something else. It wasn’t until he got closer to the front that he recognized a familiar face taking orders.

“Welcome, may I take your order?” Virgil recited, monotone as ever. He didn’t even bother looking up from the register as he said it.

“You may, but not without looking at me while you do it,” Logan joked. “I know you know me.”

Hearing Logan’s voice caused Virgil to look up. “Logan?” He scoffed. “What the fuck are you doing here?”

“Virge, language,” Roman warned as he walked behind him. “You don’t want to get in trouble for it again, right?” He didn’t await Virgil’s answer before speaking again. “Hey, Logan.”

“Hello, Roman.”

“At this point in time, I do not care,” Virgil replied. “And you should know that.”

“I do, but, like I said, I’m just warning you. Now take the poor nerd’s order. You can talk to him on your break.”

Virgil rolled his eyes as Roman walked off. “What do you want, Lo?”

“A caramel frappucino for Patton, and...an iced mocha for myself, I suppose. You know the sizes.”

Virgil nodded, punching in the order. “You’re here with Patton, huh? I’m very curious about how you got conned into that.”

“Evidently. I’m sure Roman is as well.”

“Yeah, well, he can wait. Your total is ten dollars and twenty-five cents.”

“I heard that, Virgil!” Roman called from the back.

Logan snorted as pulled out his card and paid. “He seems thrilled to hear that.”

“It’s not my fault I have a break before he does,” Virgil said nonchalantly as he grabbed the receipt and handed it over. He tapped the register a few more times looking back up at Logan. “Speaking of a break, I’m now officially on that. Gimme a second.”

Logan nodded and waited off to the side. It didn’t take long for Virgil to return. He stood right next to Logan, nudging him a bit as a way to let him know he had arrived. The other gave a small glance his way before going back to look at his phone. “What do you want?”

“You know what I want.”

Logan sighed. He was about to answer before something, or rather someone, interrupted him.

“Hey, wait for me!” Roman blurted as he walked up to them.

“Aren’t you supposed to be working?” Virgil smarted off.

“I’m cleaning tables, duh,” Roman returned, holding up the towel that was in his hand.

“How you two have not been fired yet baffles me,” Logan piped in.

“We wonder that ourselves every day. Now, tell us why you’re here with Patton.”

“Yeah, tell us!” Roman said as he made a half-hearted attempt to look like he was busy by slowly wiping down the table nearest to them.

“Alright. First of all, I didn’t get conned into it. In fact, I suggested it. It was just meant as a break from studying for finals.”

“Ew, finals.”

“Ew, studying.”

Logan rolled his eyes at their complaints, ignoring them. “He was getting really stressed out over it. So, I thought of taking him somewhere for a break.”

“So you decided to take him to get coffee? How’s coffee supposed to help?” Virgil remarked, crossing his arms.

“I...don’t know. I figured he needed to get out of there so he doesn’t think about it as much, at least. The first place I thought of was here.”

“You thought of us? How sweet,” Roman joked.

“Nah, we both know he’s thinking about Patton right now, especially in that way,” Virgil teased. The two of them kept giggling at that while Logan stared them down.

He had previously mentioned that kind of thing to them, emphasizing that it was merely a small, no, infinitesimal possibility, and they took it and ran. They were far from wrong, but Logan did not want them to know that at all. They would hound him so much about it, and he knew he wouldn’t have been able to stand it. He figured to hide anything relating to him and Patton from them. He had until now.

“Oh, of course he would be. I don’t think he would have stopped studying, of all things, if he thought otherwise,” Roman added.

“Will you two stop with that? I was just trying to be considerate!” Logan barked at them. His order had gotten called out then and there. When he turned around to get the drinks, Roman and Virgil slyly looked at each other. They stopped once he turned around to face them again.

Logan furrowed his eyebrows as he looked at them. “Don’t say it.”

“Say what?”

“You know what I mean.” He started walking off in Patton’s direction, ignoring them.

“Go have fun with your boy toy!” Roman sing-songed at him. Virgil snorted at the remark. Logan heard it loud and clear and chose to ignore it. He couldn’t help the blush that appeared on his cheeks.

He didn’t even make notice of it until Patton pointed it out.

“I should have remembered they worked here,” he muttered as he sat down. “They are colossally annoying.”

Patton had to resist a laugh. He grabbed his drink, looking at Logan. He had heard what Roman said as well, but he decided against bringing it up, thinking Logan wouldn’t have been affected by it. The blush on his face said otherwise.

“I’m sure they are. And by the way, you’re looking a little red there, Lo,” Patton answered before sipping his drink.

“What?” Logan asked, startled by the remark. He instantly felt his face, noticing how warm it was. Out of embarrassment, he buried his face in his arms on the table. A couple snickers came from Patton while Roman and Virgil cackled at him from a distance.

This was definitely not what he wanted to deal with right now.

Patton let out a couple giggles before speaking again. “You don’t have to hide from me, Logan.”

“I’m not hiding.”

“Yeah, and I’m not stressed out at all over the final that could make or break my grade. Well, actually, not so much right now. Guess this is working.”

Logan turned his head up the slightest bit to look at Patton staring right back at him. “Are you saying that just to make me feel better?”

“Not at all. Now sit up.”

“Are they looking over here?”

Patton turned his head to look at Roman and Virgil. The two had been staring at them the whole time. When they both made eye contact with Patton, they immediately looked away, acting busy. Patton had to resist chuckling as he looked back at Logan. “Not anymore.”

Logan reluctantly sat up, but avoided making eye contact with Patton. He stared at his drink, stirring it with his straw as a distraction. He couldn’t tell if his face was still red or not, but he didn’t really care now. “I...apologize for their stupidity,” he mumbled after a while.

“No need to apologize. I found it entertaining,” Patton replied, sipping his drink. “I do have to ask you this, though. Is there a reason behind what Roman said that I don’t know of?”

Logan stopped messing with his straw when Patton said that. He looked up at him for a brief second before looking back down again. “Yes, but...it would take a while to, um, explain it. We do need to get back to studying at some point, so I shouldn’t waste our time talking about it.”

Patton laughed a little bit at that. “Logan.” He got the other to look at him in the eye. “What if I told you that telling me would help relieve the studying stress? Is that convincing enough?”

“But, Patton, it really isn’t that important-”

“It is to me. Talking to you is far from a waste of time, Logan. I really wanna know.”

That, combined with the look on Patton’s face, was enough to finally convince him.

“Alright then. I’ll tell you.”

The smile that appeared on Patton’s face as a result had somehow relieved all of the stress he felt in that moment. In fact, he felt more excited in that moment more than anything and quickly got to explaining.

When they were done talking, they had long forgotten about studying and the horrors from it that happened earlier in the day. When they had returned to their work much later, Patton found the solution to that dumb problem with ease.

Logan’s idea had worked, alright. In the best way possible.

hey hello im glad you all liked the last thing i did so im gonna do this one in kind of the same way? i really just be out here with scissors looking for heart strings

- youre new to the clergy, new to being a sister, and just learning how everything works. just learning everyone’s names, your duties, and your way around the church. as anyone is in a new environment, of course you’re going to be shy and nervous and quiet. you’re so busy that you don’t even notice who looks at you, or how they look at you, or how often they look at you. You think, hey, the best compliment i can get is not being scolded for slacking off.

- but in the short amount of time you’ve been a sister, you’ve caught the unusually-wandering eyes of someone. A higher up. And he’s not exactly impressed with himself about it - he makes a point to leave the sisters to do their bidding, while he does his, and leaves it at that. he doesn’t want to come off like a creepy boss, or pressuring, or intimidating, but the last is something he does very well. He does make a point not to make personal relationships with anyone in the church, but the ones who throw themselves at him, well he doesn’t consider those relationships.

- it could be months of him aching over you and you might have absolutely no idea. he would keep his distance, and watch you from afar when he got the chance. sneak a glance. look in your direction a little more when he was giving sermons, or addressing the group. you’re oblivious because the idea of catching someone’s eye, someone like Papa II, had never crossed your mind once. But you had.

- his advances are almost nothing at first. he’s not the type to leave flowers, or love notes, or even talk to you. But he’ll be around. he’ll stand next to you in a crowd when he thinks it won't be obvious. he’ll give you the best jobs to do around the church, nothing dirty, and things he think you might enjoy. if he hears you tell another sister what you like best and least, he’ll listen. it’s not until another sister mentions to you that someone higher up may have it out for you, getting all the very small special treatment. She meant the devil, you thought of II.

- when you finally notice his little advances, and don’t seem to shy away, he’ll do more. he’ll speak to you, here and there, and mostly about church matters.but you’re surprised at the way he speaks to you when you’re the only one listening - in sermons and other speeches his voice is strong, and harsh, and potent. in conversation, his voice is quiet, and raspy, and gentle. it makes you feel warm inside. it makes you feel like you are seeing something not many other people get to see. you know for a fact he doesnt talk to any other sister, or his brothers, like this. you know he thinks you are special.

- the light conversation here and there continues for months. you think he’s really not interested after all, and just being friendly. and the secret visits in his private office with other sisters don’t stop. but you really can’t help but think about him every day. sometimes when you wake up. sometimes when at your desk you hear the most salacious sounds from his office. sometimes when you fall asleep. every time he walks past your desk, whether he looks at you or speaks, or not, your stomach fills with butterflies.

- but he does care, and he does have eyes for you. but he wants to make sure that you’re just as interested. he needs those months of almost-somethings almost-nothings to read every little sign you may be holding. read your expressions. see how you smile when he approaches. the tension is like a high for him, and when both of you are beginning to lose it a little, he’ll make his move.

-he’ll ask you into his office - you’re worried maybe you’ve been giving off the wrong signals. you don’t want to be one of those girls. you want to be His girl. he’ll tell you to wait before his desk, and then goes into a locked drawer and pulls out a beautiful boquet of your favorite flowers - he listens when you tell your fellow sisters about how much you love them - and asks you if you’ll honor him by agreeing to a dinner date. took him long enough

The issues I have with That 70’s Show:

The different ways the Intro Song is sang throughout the seasons. I was content until they introduced Randy and then the whooooole vibe in the song changed.

The on and off relationship of Jackie & Kelso. Their relationship was very unhealthy. The way Jackie would speak to Kelso, followed by Kelso repeatedly cheating on Jackie.

After Season 1 Episode 3, we rarely ever see Steven Hyde without his sunglasses.

In Season 1 Episode 2, Eric got the Vista Cruiser and Red told him all the responsibilities that come with owning the car BUT how was Eric going to afford it? He didn’t get a job until Episode 5.

Season 1 Episode 2, Midge mentions their daughter Valerie but, we never see Valerie. In fact, as the series goes on we’re made to believe Donna is an only child.

Bob. Don Stark’s cheesy acting was sometimes almost unbearable. The delivery on all of his punch lines just never stuck. Every scene they attempted to make him funny always seemed forced. Especially when he’d go “oh boy”. Bob was too corny for me to ever like his character.

Jackie wears a sweater vest with the initials JSB. I’m assuming it stands for her name except... we later find out Jackie’s middle name is Beulah. Her initials would then be JBB. I need answers!

The air hockey game at The Hub that was there for Season 1 Episode 4 and then never again.

You never see the entire view of The Forman’s house or The Pinciotti’s house.

Season 1 Episode 5 Donna mentions her little sister Tina. Again, another Pinciotti daughter that winds up disappearing. She only makes one appearance and then she’s never seen again.

The Forman kitchen table goes from having 3 legs (S1E4) to then only having 1 leg (S1E5)

Danny Bonaduce is another character who’s lines never landed.

(S1E6) Jackie’s mom (Eve Plumb) is showing the house where the gang is trying to throw a kegger. Jackie’s mom in this episode is not the same woman we later came to know as “Jackie’s Mom” (Brooke Shields) way later in the series.

How pot is perceived throughout the show with the moving wall, the floating heads, demonic voices etc.

Donna occasionally entertaining Hyde’s crush he had on her. She then gets upset with Eric when he makes out with Laurie’s friend, Kate, from College.

Hyde willing to learn how to dance, buying gifts — i mean, the lengths this man will go & step out of his own character in order to impress Donna. But, when he begins dating Jackie, the poor girl almost has to pull teeth to get a romantic gesture out of him. HE WAS WILLING TO DANCE TO DISCO FOR DONNA!

(S1E8)The customer service at Blanigans is quite appalling. Between the rude hostess and the singing employees nearly running over The Forman’s, what kind of restaurant is this?! Then as The Forman’s are storming out, you can see a casting extra mouth the words “what the fuck [.....]”. I couldnt make out what the last few words were but my guess is he said “what the fuck is that guys problem?” How did no one catch that?!

(S1E8) Kitty & Red get caught hooking up in their car by a police officer. Them getting caught isn’t the part that’s the issue, it’s the way Red speaks to the officer and then the officer cowers away from him. What kind of cop is this guy?

(S1E9) Kate, Laurie’s friend from college, not giving two fucks about making out with Eric, a boy who is underage. Kate being unmoved by the possibilities of jail time is worrisome.

When do they ever actually go to school?!

How does Laurie stay Red’s favorite? She smokes in front of him, flunks out of college, drinks all of his beer, marries Fez, is caught lying repeatedly, & is openly slut-shamed by the whole gang in front of Red. CAN THIS GIRL REALLY DO NO WRONG?! It’s only when she gets caught living with a man that for a brief moment Eric is the new favorite.

(S1E17) That cringe worthy moment when Bob picks up Donna’s birth control from the Pharmacy and Bob recreates the Macaulay Culkin/Home Alone face. One of the many cheesy Bob moments that I mentioned before.

(S1E18) The frustration of having absolutely no idea what Kelso’s dad actually does for a living. Based off of many Google searches he’s a Senior Executive Statistical Analysis Technician. If you read the description of what a Statistical Analysist does I could see how a teenager like Kelso would get extremely confused.

(S1E18) “Gross Edna” aka Hyde’s mom asks Hyde if he has his fake i.d., to which he replies “you know it”. So, if Hyde has had a fake i.d. this whole time then why is the gang always on a mission to steal beer?!

(S1E18) Jackie working on Red’s car with him on Take Your Kid To Work Day. This is so out of character for Jackie and her knowledge about cars is never brought up again.

The show starts off in 1976 but, halfway through season 1 we’re in 1977. We chill in ‘77 until the end of season 3 when we finally enter 1978. But then, we stay there until season 6. We then wrap up the show with the final seasons all taking place in 1979. Time really doesn’t make any sense throughout That 70’s Show.

THERE’S A BRITISH VERSION OF THIS SHOW?!?! Why do we as human beings continue to do this?! I get it that the remake of a television show into an American version or the remake into a British version can be a huge hit! I also know how much of a fail this can turn out to be. The British tried with recreating the classic Golden Girls (UK: Brighton Belles), Saturday Night Live aka SNL (UK: Saturday Live), Friends (UK: Coupling). Then America tried with Skins (UK: Skins) and The Inbetweeners (UK: The Inbetweeners). Sometimes you just gotta leave the originals alone. But, if you’re interested in watching the British remake of That 70’s Show, the show is called Days Like These.

(S1E22) Eric tells Hyde that he can’t leave for New York because they were “gonna paint that pot leaf on the Water Tower”. BUT WAIT — HOLD UP!! We already saw them paint the pot leaf on the Water Tower (S1E21). The painting of the pot leaf literally happened one episode before Forman says this to Hyde!! It’s the same episode where Kelso falls off the Water Tower and breaks his arm while he was trying to perfect the Pot Leaf Painting to Hyde’s liking. How did Hyde & Eric forget all of this happening? How did the That 70’s Show crew forget this just happened?

Danny Masterson (Hyde) is a Scientologist IRL?! This has nothing to do with the show, i’m just shook.

There’s never a discussion of Hyde losing his virginity. With the rest of the gang they would all sit around and speak in detail about how it was for them. But, not with Hyde. I’m assuming he lost his virginity to Christy (S1E22) since this is the first sexual partner of his we are introduced to but, since the gang doesn’t talk about it WE DONT KNOW!

(S1E23) The very odd almost accepting nature of The Forman family losing Bernice Forman aka Mother Forman. Other than Red’s brother Marty, nobody really showed sadness to losing a loved one.

(S1E10) We finally get to meet Red’s mother, Bernice. She’s very transparent about her hatred for Kitty, which causes everyone to be on edge and want to stay clear of Bernice’s sharp tongue. Fortunately for Eric, his friend Fez is an admirer of Bernice’s feet and rubs them until her whole demeanor changes. She leaves The Forman home complimenting Kitty’s cooking, as well as complimenting their car. Which brings me to this.. They left episode 10 on such a good note! What happened inbetween episode 10 and episode 23 (the episode covering Bernice’s death and funeral)?! By episode 23 Bernice was back to her snarky self and I need answers as to why she couldn’t just stay nice!

(S1E23) The Funeral Director walking over to Bernice’s casket to close her eyes. This is 1. confusing to me & 2. kind of morbid if you think about what that must’ve looked like.

(S1E23) What ever happened to Red’s train set? You can clearly see how much that train set meant to him and how bad he wanted it for himself but, we never see that sentimental train set again.

(S1E23) The cemetery where Mother Forman is buried and Eric goes to visit at night looks a whoooooole awful lot like The Forman’s backyard. Change the stucco of the house and the fence, then add a tomb stone... boom! Eric’s backyard is now a cemetery.

(S1E24) The gang all go skinny dipping meaning they are swimming butt naked. The skinny dipping isn’t where I find an issue. The issue is actually in the episode later on (S4E20) when the gang is reminiscing on the time they’ve spent together over the years. One of the memories being that Kelso is the only one who’s never seen Donna’s boobs. WHICH DOESNT MAKE ANY SENSE! They all went skinny dipping together. They were all naked. Kelso being Kelso.. he would’ve definitely made sure he never blinked. Not even for a second if that meant he could see any girl naked. So, Kelso claiming to have never seen Donna’s boobs seems false.

(S1E24) Midge welcoming the members of the Women Warriors group into her home only to have Sharon so disrespectfully flirt with Midge’s husband, Bob. Bob is not clueless to Sharon’s flirting. He actually seems to enjoy as well as entertain this woman making passes at him. This is one of the first signs that Bob & Midge’s marriage may not be eternal.

(S1E24) This is the episode when Hyde moves in with Eric because Edna (Hyde’s mom) has abandoned him. But, what ever happened to the house that Hyde left behind? We’re aware that his mom was renting the place but, he never went back to pick up anymore belongings. Edna was ok with all of her clothes and other things she owned just being tossed out?

(S1E24) Fez’s tattoo. Fez tells the gang that it’s a tattoo of the Blessed Virgin of Yorba Linda. What that looks like we don’t know because we never see it & after this episode we never hear about it again. The only thing Google gave me was that Yorba Linda is a suburban area in California. Who this Blessed Virgin is, we may never know.

(S1E25) Eric attempts to bounce a bowling ball in the living room, resulting in the ball breaking Red’s TV. I understand wanting to replace the television but, I’m also confused as to why they didn’t just take the TV from the basement in place of the broken television until Eric could afford to buy the house a new one. In fact, you never hear of or see Eric purchasing a new TV for the family after this episode. The replacement is all-of-a-sudden there. AND how did Red expect him to buy one? Eric hasn’t had a job since the Fatso Burger episode. Just as soon as he started working, he quit.

(S2E1) The Forman’s & The Pinciotti’s not realizing that they were high. Midge reveals in a later episode(S3E1) that her & Bob partake in smoking marijuana stating “That stuff was right here in our neighborhood? And to think of all the times we have to drive across town..” after finding out that Hyde was arrested for possession. So, if The Pinciotti’s know what smoking pot feels like you’d think they’d know that they were stoned after eating Hyde’s brownies (S2E1). And Red of all people not noticing that something felt a little off after eating the brownies? How’d he not catch on that something felt different? Which would be a solid reason for Red to be mad once he sobered up. But, I guess he never caught on. Weird.

According to an article I read, Red Forman threatened to put his foot in someone’s ass 38 times. I actually question whether or not this is accurate because I swear it felt like he said it at least double that amount of times. Even if he did only threaten people with his foot 38 times, he still never actually followed through with any of his threats. Red was all bark & no bite.

(S2E5) The gang finds out the Kelso is a year older than all of them meaning he could have been buying them beer this whole time. But, let’s not forget that Hyde has also had a fake i.d. and could’ve been doing the purchasing of the beer as well.

There were several times throughout the series when you can see that it was hard for the cast to execute their lines without cracking a smile or laughing. Thankfully they’re playing teenage stoners so, breaking into laughter can be overlooked.

The on going shame the gang continues to throw at Donna for not having sex with Forman. A teenager wanting to wait isn’t a reason for people to not respect her decision.

(S2E7) Donna tells Eric she loves him and he can’t say it back. WHAT IN THE ACTUAL FUCK! Eric has been in love with Donna since they’ve met & for him to leave her hanging like that, ugh—- I cant!

The racist references made throughout the whole series. They were mostly directed towards Fez & I’m aware that the 70’s were a different time. But, racism is racism no matter what era we’re talking about. The jokes about not knowing where he’s from or that his accent is weird— this is can be funny. But, once we cross into poking fun at his skin color by calling him by names of people of color.. that’s disrespectful.

(S2E18) Red forgets Eric’s age.

(S2E24) Red forgets Eric’s age AGAIN! His memory is becoming a concern.

(S2E20) How come we’ve never heard of The Pinciotti’s cat, Mr. Bonkers, until now?! & as quick as we’re introduced to the cat he’s out of our lives. RIP Mr. Bonkers’ short lived screen time.

(S3E2) I’m not a fan of watching The Forman’s & Hyde break out into song.

(S3E8)(S3E9)We jumped from Veterans Day to Christmas. What happened to Thanksgiving?!

(S3E15) The way Donna eats this one piece of candy. Very odd.

(S3E16) Red confirms with Eric that Kelso’s parents are dumb. But, in an earlier season we are to believe that Kelso’s dad is a Statistical Analysist. Not a job for dumb people.

(S3E18) The way directors thought we were suppose to believe this poor excuse of a fight between the Girls Lacrosse Team and Eric, Hyde & Fez. The girls were barely even lifting their legs. Unbelievably Unbelievable.

Eric is way too big for his bed. His feet literally hang off the end.

I'm a bit embarrassed to ask this. Have you ever read a fic that, stylistically, it's beautiful, linguistically it's tight, and it's obvious the author poured their whole self into constructing the plot, crafting the world, and nailing down the characterizations, but... You just don't get it? Like, perhaps there's some insight you're missing, and it's almost there, you think maybe you're close to getting what the author is trying to portray, but you just can't make the connection necessary?

(Embarrassed nonny continued) You even reread to make sure you didn’t skip anything, but it’s like it just seems that something missing? Or that you’re the one missing something vital? So you go to the comments to see if anyone else is confused, but all you see are lovely, supportive compliments about how beautiful the story is (and it is), or how heartwrenching it is (usually so). But you seem to be the only one not getting it?

(Embarrassed nonny cont. again) Is it destructive to let the author know that I think a story is beautiful in it’s telling, but that I don’t quite understand it? I don’t want to offend the author, who has clearly worked very hard, and I appreciate them so much. But, I want to understand the story they’re telling, even if I’m the only one not getting it. If that even makes any sense. P.S.- thanks for always taking time to listen to fandom woes and fielding requests. You’re a champion! ❤

Hi Nonny!

First of all, there’s nothing for you to be embarrassed about! Stories are partly about authorial intent, and partly about reader interpretation; no two people will interpret a story the same, and no author SHOULD expect a reader to interpret their story exactly as the author intended. SHERLOCK is a perfect example of this (the writers SAY they meant it to be one thing and literally the ENTIRE FANDOM is divided on what’s actually being shown on screen), or if you want to be more classical, the works of Shakespeare as well.

In fact, Shakespeare is a perfect example of your problem: I love Shakespeare: it’s beautifully written, it sounds lovely to the ear, and it invokes imagery based on how someone interprets it. But I sure as heck have NO idea what I read until someone explained it to me, or how I SHOULD have interpreted it (which, is oxymoronic to my point, I know…). Only after I hear how someone else interpreted the work, I can then RE-READ a work and begin to understand what was meant by it, and then develop my own interpretations.

I’ve read a few fics by a couple authors in this fandom where I LOVED their writing, but I had NO idea what was happening until I re-read the fics… it’s a reading comprehension thing with me, I’m sure (my brain tends to move a bit quicker than I can read and talk, and in turn it also tends to wander when my eyes aren’t going fast enough, LOL), but a lot of times, if I just read a fic a second time I can then grasp the words my brain omitted the first time and then really enjoy and love the fic. I hate that about me, but that’s how my brain works… Perhaps it may be the same with your brain? If a fic is well written and you enjoyed it but just had some comprehension issues, perhaps a second read-through will help you as it has done with me :)

So, now to answer your question: if after reading a fic, and you don’t understand it, is it okay to ask the authorial intent of the story? Unfortunately, there is no yes-or-no answer to this question, Lovely, as every author is different. Personally – and this is just for me speaking, and what I would do or what I would not mind if I were the author – I think it’s alright, so long as you are respectful to them! Dig around their user pages and you can often find ways to interact with the author outside of their fics, or information about whether or not they want to read criticism etc. on their stories. If an author doesn’t want any interaction, they’ll be very clear about it, but most authors have ways to get in touch with them, so to ME that’s a saying “hey, if you have any questions, here’s how to get a hold of me!”.

If they have a Tumblr with asks turned on, you can even do it like you have done for me here; write exactly what you mentioned, just tweak a few things: Mention how much you love their prose and their storytelling, and you can really feel how much love they put into the story. You found it interesting, though you’re unclear on a few parts. Ask them kindly how they intended for an audience to read it. Many creators appreciate honesty when talking about their works, so just be honest and say that you didn’t understand something and wouldn’t mind a bit of clarification about something. They can’t fault you for not understanding something, and if they do, well… I find that rather ableist, in my opinion: That’s like telling someone with dyslexia to just stop mixing up letters, or someone who’s native language isn’t English to just learn one of the most complex languages in the world with so many structure rules that make no sense half the time…. *shrugs* It’s harsh of me to say, I am sorry about that, writers, but reading comprehension doesn’t come easily for everyone.

ANYWAY, back to my point: An author, so long as you are respectful (and maybe peppering in some compliments and praise never hurts either… a lot of us creative-types have praise kinks) and don’t throw a backhanded compliment (like don’t say: “Your work is so amazing! Though I think you should make it easier for people to understand it, your words are too complex”), they will be more than happy to write out their intent for the story. Let them know it’s YOU who’s not understanding (so, “I have trouble understanding this part” as opposed to “you should make this work easier to read for everyone”… make the onus on YOU). DON’T be demanding (like, don’t say something that can be interpreted as “it’s YOUR responsibility to cater to MY need to understand”), and be patient for a reply.

You can see why this isn’t an easy yes-or-no answer, LOL.

Essentially, kindness begets kindness, and respect begets respect. And – this isn’t an attack on you personally with regards to this ask, because I know my audience are adorably shy beans – it might be a show of good faith and intentions to stay off anon when you ask your question; it shows the author that you aren’t being malicious, just simply a smol bean who loves stories and want to learn more about theirs. BUT, it IS okay to stay on-anon if you are shy / worried about not the author but other people interpreting it the wrong way, just make sure you tailor your question to the author in a respectful way that it comes across as respect. Perhaps something like this:

Hi, [author]! I really love your story, [story title]! It’s well-written and I can really tell how much you love this story and how much soul you put into it. I just had a question for you with regards to [name concern here]. [state question here]. I have trouble sometimes with [reading comprehension, English/language, dyslexia, etc.], and I would love to know what your ideas and thought process was for [character, plot point, situation, etc.]. Understanding what the author intended really helps me enjoy the stories even more than I already did, and your thoughts would be really helpful for when I re-read your story! Thank you so much for your time, and thank you for blessing us with this beautiful story!

Or something like that, LOL. And if you genuinely aren’t a native-language speaker, let them know that it’s not your first language so you’re just honestly not grasping a colloquialism that’s common in English but not in, say, German. It’s more common than you think! I’ve had people ask me in private before about a phrase I’ve written or about how they should interpret a meta of mine; I’ve never taken insult upon it, and in fact I love helping people understand my work so that they can enjoy other peoples’ content in the future.

As an additional thought I just had, I think a good example of fandom-understanding-authors is, actually, the @johnlockficclub; every couple months or so we read new stories, and then at the end of the story, we ask authors our questions about their intent of the stories, and in turn the author gets an interesting (I hope) insight into how various people interpreted their stories. Even during the live-chats leading up to the author q-and-a, we all see how we each interpreted certain sections of the chapters we read that week, and see various viewpoints we never considered. So I think that is a wonderful way to see authorial intent vs. reader interpretation, and as far as I know, all the authors we’ve “interviewed” loved just getting that kind of feedback for their stories. You should join in on at least the author interviews just to see how they go and give you some ideas on how an author will take feedback. It’s so fascinating to me!

Just a fun little anecdote that oftentimes, it is a positive experience for an author because most of them love to talk about their stories – their stories are their children, and they care deeply for them, because it’s a part of them, and it’s an expression of their love. They WANT you to understand and enjoy their work. It’s a cyclical thing: if you understand their children so you can love them too, then they will love their fanbase and will want to continue to write since they received feedback that was validating to them that they produce work that people enjoy and want to know more about.

Finally, I’d love for some authors to weigh in on their thoughts about this; would you be offended if someone loved your story but would want your clarification on some things, or want to know how you intended for the audience to perceive it? Please let us know!

disclaimer: i know mark graduated yesterday but i wrote this story a long time ago and i feel like there isn’t a better time than now for me to post this. so here goes my tears :,)

day0:

at 19, mark was unsure of his future.

it never crossed mark’s mind that the age, twenty, would come so early but boy was he wrong. it was as if it was only yesterday he just learnt how to chew gum.

mark was intending to go on a road trip for five days right before he officially becomes an adult. but you see, the downside of being a hardworking individual is that you simply have no friends. that’s how mark came up with the idea to invite 6 other teenagers around his age to follow him. he went to the local cafe right opposite his block. it was the place where teenagers often hang out.

there he met 6 other teens who were different yet he could connect with them easily. renjun, an 18 year old aspiring artist who left his hometown to pursue his dreams. he’s small but he can hit a bitch if he needs to. jeno, an 18 year old cheerful soul who will do anything to ensure that everyone is happy. he says he is no fun but he can turn on his funny button if he needs to. haechan, an 18 year old devilish boy who should’ve been born in the 80s. he picks on others but he sure is full of love. jaemin, a loveable 18 year old boy who could flirt for a living. he may seem a little odd with all the flirting but he’s the most loyal friend you can ever come across. chenle, a 17 year old loud loud child who is absolutely talented. he screams a lot but he definitely has a beautiful voice. and lastly, jisung, a 16 year old dancer who is insanely talented. he’s young but he is taller than you. a fact.

“let’s go on a road trip.” and that’s how their journey began.

day1:

mark thought this was a stupid idea. he was the only one who could drive so how was he supposed to fully experience his adventure. whatever it was, he still continued on. it’s not like he could find group of 6 other willing boys.

he borrowed his brother’s, johnny, red suv and drove right off. there was no plan, nothing. just 7 boys in a red suv ready to experience life together. it started off awkward. none of them talked. even haechan, the supposed moodmaker, was silent throughout the whole journey. there was just nothing they could talk about, they didnt know each other at all.

even as they reached the first pitstop, they were silent. probably just constant gag sounds from renjun because he disliked awkward situations. i mean it’s not like mark could do anything, he was driving. while they were having a cup of hot chocolate (weirdly enough, all of them ordered the same thing), mark blurted out a question about why they decided to follow him. they all had the same exact answer (well not exactly but you get it) and that is because they all have a dream,,,,,and then the awkward silence returned.

they all willingly agreed to pitch a tent and have a camp by the sea, the moment they arrived. well, at least it wasnt so awkward when they were asleep.

day2:

the next morning they drove off to have brunch. on the way to the diner, famous for their pancakes, haechan boosted his stereo to michael jackson’s bad and surprisingly all of them enjoyed it. they had more similarities than they thought they would. as they reached the diner, the mood was lighter than ever. it was as if sleeping together made them bond well. again, all of them ordered rather similarly. jaemin suggested they played a prank on the waitress to add a little spice to their morning. jisung decided that they should play a game and the loser has to sing the menu to the waitress.

as expected, renjun lost and he was forced to do the prank. he came up to her and before he could say anything the waitress said, “with voices as loud as you boys, you think i wouldnt know what you’re about to do? save yourself the embarrassment.” with that all of them ran out, leaving a red cheeked renjun standing in the middle of the diner. remember when i said renjun could hit a bitch if he wanted to? well this is what i meant. none of the boys left without a bruise. especially chenle who could not stop laughing.

they decided once again to stop by a park to take in fresh air. mark decided they should get to know one another even better. thats how they ended up playing a game of two truths and one lie. there were stupid lies and horribly dumb truths that came up and one that got mark thinking whether growing up was something he wanted. during haechan’s turn, he explained that his truth was that he was afraid of not having anywhere to go after being an adult. they all left what haechan said aside because truth be told none of them knew for themselves either.

they carried on playing other games and having dinner at the same diner because let’s be real, renjun’s pride comes after a good meal. but throughout the whole time, all of them started getting afraid of the horrors of their adulthood. even for jisung who still has 4 years left till his coming of age.

day3:

now, the third day was the most awful. they felt raw this day. but we’ll get to that. it has only been 2 days but the boys felt as though they had been friends for decades. or rather decade, none of them are twenty as of now.

jaemin and jeno went to the nearby convenience store to get breakfast for the boys. for the whole day they decided to just sit around and talk. and so they did. thats the reason why they felt raw.

mark sat without sharing anything. he was terrified. he was afraid that if anyone knew about it they would mock him and his innocent dream.

renjun began first. he talked about how he thinks that his dream is dumb. it has been 4 years since he came to korea and not once has he gotten an offer to further his art studies. whats the point he thought? anything he drew would never be approved as beautiful enough. and it sucks because when he showed his artwork, mark thought that it was a masterpiece. to him it doesnt matter how beautiful the piece was, it was the story behind it that counts. and that came mark’s first lesson, that nothing in life is ever fair.

jeno went on to talk about how he had no goal. nothing at all. for him, his dream is to live a life with no regrets. thats why he’s not pushing to do anything to stress himself out. he’s just gonna go with the flow. after graduating from his high school barely passing, he feels as though it doesnt matter. jeno believes that he’ll get somewhere one day. after all he’s still a teenager he’s got enough time to think about these things. but for now, he’ll just live in the moment. and that was mark’s second lesson, to live and let loose.

haechan was next. he had a dream to be a singer. and god that boy could sing. but for haechan he felt insecure. no matter how many people came up to him to tell him he was talented, he just cant accept that. that’s probably why he hides it with all the snarky remarks and the over the top compliments for himself. he never felt that he was good enough. but mark feels bad because haechan doesnt deserve to feel that way. haechan was full of love and he couldnt understand why he couldnt give himself any. this made him learn his third lesson, that only you can bring happiness to yourself.

and then there’s jaemin. mark cant help but feel sympathetic for him. jaemin was a dancer, a really good one (from the videos jaemin showed). but the thing is he cant dance anymore. at all. he got into an accident and now he isnt allowed to dance anymore. but the weird thing is that it didnt stop him from being content with life. for he feels that everything happens for a reason. and mark looks up to jaemin because he never fails to put on a smile knowing that his dream of being a dancer is near impossible for him to achieve. that’s how mark learnt to smile even if failure comes.

well for chenle, he had already achieved his dream. well partially. he is currently a trainee singer at a well known agency in korea. as a child, chenle was a music prodigy in china. he went on talent shows and clinched first place in almost every one of them. it was as if chenle’s future had already been written for him to be a singer. but he never used his past to get a boost for an opportunity in the industry. he worked incredibly hard to get into the agency and never once did he take his place for granted. mark learnt from him that its important to stay humble.

and lastly, jisung, the dancing king. mark was amazed by how insanely talented this boy was. it was no wonder he became a famous child dancer, known all over korea. anywhere jisung went people would recognise him and mob him for his autograph or a picture. but as mark sees how jisung acts when he’s with those his age, he realises that jisung is in fact just a kid and he’s just trying to enjoy life as normal teenager. its a pity for jisung because he devoted his whole youth to dancing, and now even when he looks back, his childhood was all just a blur. he complains that if there was one regret he had, it was not living each day to its fullest. that was mark’s last lesson. to seize every moment.

by the end of it all, they were all starting to doze off. and before they knew it , they fell asleep. except mark because he cant help but wonder what will happen to these boys once they part. and in that same moment he thinks, thank god i met these people.

day4:

the next day they woke up in the late afternoon. all of them felt exhausted after spilling almost everything about themselves.

the moment mark woke up he felt awful. there were only two days left till he becomes an adult and that thought scared him to his wits. he began sobbing softly and the boys came running to him. mark explained.

mark was afraid of having a future at all. everytime he tried, he failed. mark wanted to be a rapper. wanted. because there were so many competitions that he attended and he failed. so many people told him that he’ll fail because as a rapper, there’s no future for him.

mark shared that his parents were supportive of him so that wasnt a problem. but you see he didnt want to burden his parents. he knew if he pursued this dream it would take a lot of money and none would be gained back. now mark’s left, all goal-less because he knows if he tried, he’ll fail for sure.

so that’s how mark ended up here in seoul. because he needed a breather. his parents advised that if he doesnt know what to do he should just enter college. thats a sure success because a degree can get you any job you need. but mark was sure it wont bring him happiness because he knows that he doesnt want to go to university, it’s just not him. mark felt empty as though no one understood him, until now of course.

as the 7 dreamers sat under the night sky they thought to themselves. the adults always say you need to plan for your future, you need to know what you want to do. but they never help you. they’d just leave you to figure things out by yourself.

the adults never tell us how hard the process of growing up is. they never prepare us for it. its like going into a battlefield without weapons. no matter how loud you shout or plead for them to aid you. its useless because now they’ll pull out the “it’s your life. it’s your decision” card. but if you fail, its all on you. and if you succeed then suddenly, the family’s the one who paid for the fees and give you moral support and all that jazz.

so that made them awfully afraid because they knew that one day they’ll be doing something and that they’ll get somewhere. but what if they arent happy? what if they’re miserable?

day5:

it was the last day. the 7 of them drove back. the whole drive home was silent. they knew that it’ll be the last time they would see each other. mark will be leaving. he didnt intend to grow so close with the boys but he did and now he hates it. his heart is heavy to leave them but he has to. he understands that people come and go. thats just the cycle. unknown to mark, this is part of growing up. he has to accept that, nothing in life is constant, no matter how hard it is.

as they reached the same coffee house, you could see how all their eyes turned crystal. but their egos are high, so fret not cause they’ll not cry. except renjun and haechan, they cried. hard.

all mark did was put a smile on his face and he said “yo dream. promise me you’ll remember me, alright. we’ll see each other soon.”

and with that he left. and never turned back. because he knew if he did, he wont be able to say goodbye.

day6 (the day mark turned 20) :

now, mark’s 20.

at 20, mark’s still unsure of his future. but he knows that all he wants for now, is to be happy.

Finding some comfort

Natsu was walking through town and was in a very sad mood. Having confessed to erza and then being rejected for that...blue haired bastard was too much for him. He can't move on no matter what he does as the other people were walking around hik he just sat there sitting in sadness. He looked as he saw couples flirting with eachother, kissing eachother, and saying "i love you" to eachother and it was pissing him off.

"Not everybody has what you have!!!!" He yelled at the couple and scared them off.

"Woah what's got you in a bad mood" a woman said behind him.

"That's non of you-" he was cut off when he saw the woman she was quite beautiful if he was honest her was hair was black and was done in twin-tails, she wore a white blouse that showed an impressive amount of cleavage that cam rival erza's with a gold necklace around her neck, she had a black skirt with black tights, and wore thigh high boots."business"

"Hmph" she pouted with her arms crossed "don't be rude, im just tryong to find out what's going on"

He apologized "um sorry i didn't mean lt like that"

She smiled "that's better, i forgive you my name is symera what's your name"

"My name is natsu dragneel" he introduced himself

"So your the famous fire dragon slayer i heard so much about, it's nice to finally meet you in person" she said in amazement.

"Yeah i guess you could say that" he said rubbing the back of his hair in nervousness then looked depressed again.

"What's wrong" she asked worriedly

"Listen you seem nice and all but you wouldn't understand I'll see you later" he siad as he walked away

As he began to walk away he heard shout "wait" she grabbed his hand stopping him from going further.

"Don't just walk away like that" she said with concern

"Please let go" he begged

"No not until you tell me what's wrong" she persisted

"But you don't know me, why would you want to help me" he asked

"I may not know you but that doesn't mean we cant be friends and know eachother later on right" she said and this shocked him but after that he smiled

"Alright, ill tell you"

Later

"So you confessed your feelings to that erza girl and now you won't be able to move on because of your... instincts?" She concluded

"Yup" he said

"Wow that sounds like a nightmare not being to move on and get stuck in pain" she thought

"Oh you have no idea" he said with a sigh

She sat in silence for a moment then got up from her seat and held out her hand towards him and natsu just looked up in confusion. "Come on aren't you going to take it?" She asked

"......why would i take your hand" he aaked not getting it

'Wow they weren't kidding he really is dense' she thought

"I meant grab my hand were gonna go somewhere" she concluded

"But where?" He asked

"Just follow me" she said

As they left symera brought natsu to a starry sky and it looked beautiful, all around him there was a field of grass and trees and it looked very peaceful. Symera looked at natsu's shocked fave and laughed.

"Beautiful isn't it, i come here all the time when im sad and when i look at the stars i feel as if all my sadness went away" she said with a smile

"This place is beautiful i feel happy inside" he said as he looked at the sky and synera just looked at him happy that she was helping him.

The next day

"Geez where is that flamehead" the ice prick said in nothing but his underwear.

"Darling your clothes are gone" juvia said

"Gaaa!!! Ah crap not again!" gray yelled as he went to go find his clothes

"juvia will help you search for them my love!" She said as she went to help him

"It's not like natsu to be missing for a long time i wonder where he could be?" Wondered lucy with worry

"I hoe that he's ok" wendy said also with worry

"This natsu were talking about" erza walked up with the group with a smirk "i wouldn't dwell on the matter for to long since nothing could bring his mood down for long"

She then frowned as she remembered why natau left when he confessed and ahe didn't feel the same way for him. 'I hope i didnt change him for the worse' she thought in worry.

Just as she thought that the doory swung open with a loud natsu saying "IM BACK FAIRY TAIL!!!!!!"

"Well someone is in a happy mood looks like we were worried for nothing" Lucy said with a smile

"Yeah still the aame idiot as before" gray said with a smirk

"You wanna go ice prick" natsu said as he butt heads with gray

"Bring it flamebrain!" they get ready their magic and....get their heads smashed together by erza

"You two boys will never learb to get along will you" she said with a sigh then looked at natsu and smiled "now natsu, im pleased to see that you ar-" she got cut off

"Oh yeah i forgot to tell you about someone" he said with excitement

"Someone?" Erza asked confused

Natsu came in with symera and the whole guild fell silent.

"Everyone this is symera" he said happily

No one said a word not even erza and when she saw how close she was to natsu she couldn't but get a bad feeling in her stomach and she didn't know why.

"Holy cow natsu brought a girl!"

"I knew this day would come!"

"Our natsu fell in love with girl and a sexy one to!"

Just as the one person said that natsu punched that person in the face "watch what you say to her punk"

"Now, now natsu calm down im sure he meant to say that i was pretty" she said nervously

"Your not pretty.......your beautiful symera" he said woth a smile

Her face turned as red as erzas hair and natsu never complimented a girl before and part of her wanted him to call her beautiful to.

"Come on natsu that's embarrassing" she said with her fingers touching eachother

"Sorry but it's the truth" he said with a happy smile and natsu and symera went out of the guild together and the team just sat there in silence

"What just happened" gray said shocked

"Juvia does not know but natsu brought a girl juvia is ok with her as long as she doesnt steal Juvia's gray!" Juvia said possessively

"Natsu's so bold" wendy said with a red face

"I didnt know natsu knew anything about women" lucy said in amazement

Erza didn't say anything she just stared at the door they went out of and just the same feeling she got earlier 'who was that girl and why were they so close to eachother could they be...no they couldn't natsu couldn't possibly know anything about a relationship, but why does it hurt' she thought little did she know she was jealous.
