All propaganda has to come from between 1900 and 2000 (so pretty much it has to be 20th century).

Propaganda can come from both movies and television! It just must be directly from or related to SF/Fantasy material. Stuff from outside the media itself, such as interviews, promotional images, etc are allowed, as long as they have some connection to an actor’s sf/fantasy work. Completely unrelated material (for example, general magazine photoshoots, etc) will not be taken as propaganda.

Please only submit propaganda where the actor is at least 18! They must have been at least 18 while filming something; if someone was under 18 when filming but over 18 when it was released, I will not take the propaganda.

Live action roles only; voice-only roles will not be counted for propaganda.

Propaganda can come from any sci fi/fantasy related material, even if its not a super well known role for someone or one of the shows/films listed next to them on the poll.

I may not boost video propaganda that’s very much longer than 6 minutes (I’d like to try to watch videos before reblogging or posting them to try and tag TWs if need be)

Notes on Propaganda

Propaganda is not written by me. Opinions in propaganda aren’t necessarily also my opinions, and if someone makes a claim about an actor I can’t necessarily guarantee its accuracy. The most editing I’ve done of any text  propaganda is fixing small spelling issues and occasionally removing explanatory lines that are just mentioning that there’s a video/photo to look at too. 

I will not boost negative propaganda. I’m here to celebrate hot vintage sci fi/fantasy guys, so I want to hear about why your favorite guy is the hottest, not why someone else is the least hot, if that makes sense. I’ll also leave whether to take into account what a nominated actor is generally like as a person in the hands of each individual voter. 

FAQ:

If a show started airing before the cut-off date but ended after it, can I only submit things from the earliest part of it?

I will definitely give a little leeway to things that started pre-2000 and end like a year or two after the cut-off date. It’s only stuff that runs well past the cut-off that I’d rather only take propaganda from the early sections of, or things that don’t have their initial release until 2001 or later that I won’t take propaganda for at all. Additionally, if a show/film series started pre-2000 but an actor didn’t join it until after the cutoff, I won’t take propaganda for them from that particular role.

Since propaganda is coming from the media itself, what images will be used for actors who usually or always appear in heavy prosthetics/makeup?

Main pictures for actors are mostly coming from either submitted propaganda images or, if there were none, are being chosen by me, usually from an actor’s best known role. In cases where said best known role involves wearing heavy makeup, I have still used direct images from that role for their main picture. However, for the sake of being fair, considering there’s also lots of people where you can see their full actual face, I have made sure to include an image of all these actors without their makeup among their additional propaganda, so that people can at least get a sense of what they actually look like, as well. This will also be noted directly on applicable polls so that people will hopefully see that they can check the additional propaganda to see what the actor looks like normally. 

Is stuff from as late as the 90s really “vintage”?

Honestly it seems like the definition of what’s actually literally “vintage” is somewhat variable. I think the most common cutoff is anything older than 20 years, though some will put it a bit (though not usually much) later, and what counts as "vintage" vs other categories can sometimes depend on the medium (you might see different time ranges for what's what for clothes vs music vs cars, etc). Personally I’m kind of operating on vintage clothing store rules (in that most vintage stores will typically buy or sell things from the 90s or older). At any rate, film and television from as recently as the late 90s does feel like it’s from its own distinct era of media, which is why I feel like it fits here.

What will happen if there’s a tie?

In the case of an exact 50/50 split, both actors will move forward to the next round individually, and not be put together on a team. If the presence of an extra actor causes a three person matchup to be required in the next round, then I’ll probably put at least one of the tied actors into the three-person match. If no three-way matchup is needed (or if it was gonna need to happen regardless of extra actors moving forward), they’ll just be matched up normally.  

How were round one match-ups made?

Considering what an overall strong group of actors were going into the tournament, I don't think there's any permutation of match-ups that doesn't knock out some really good people early. So for the first round I prioritized trying to make as many matches as possible where it felt like there was at least something linking the two actors. Hence if you start to look through pairs you'll probably notice there's like sets of "vampire guys", "android guys", "ghost movie guys", etc, with some of the pairings having more or less direct connections (and a few admittedly had to be much more random because they had no great direct match up or I felt like their best match up had an even better match with someone else). I did factor projected popularity in to a degree, in that I tried not to match up people who were submitted a certain number of times against each other right away, but outside of that I mostly wanted to create as many pairings that felt like they had some common logic behind them as possible.

A comprehensive list of each TWST character’s exact birthdate, in order, down to the year + their ages. This will be going off of Twisted Wonderland’s release date, (2020), and not the current year (2023 at the time of writing). Contains chapter 7 spoilers.

~Ortho’s age is anonymous, so I had to do some speculations and maths here. I’m going to assume that R!Ortho was 8 years old at the date of his death, and that Idia constructed O!Ortho when he was around 10. This would give their parents plenty of time to start caring about Robortho before the pair left for Night Raven. I’m going to assume that O!Ortho is either 3 years old with the mental state of an 11 year old, or 3 years old with the mental state of a 16 year old (since he joined the first years, albeit as a special exception). Personally I’m leaning more towards the former.

~If Lilia was 300 years old during the war and Silver was a baby at the time (seemingly 0 - 1 years old) then that would mean that his birthyear falls somewhere between 1620 - 1622, most likely 1621. Lilia also states that the day he found Silver was the day that he decided for Silver's birthday, meaning that the odds of May 15th being his real birthday are 1/365. During Silver's identity crisis dream we see what he looked like on the day that Lilia found him, which we've established was May 15th, and he looks to be roughly 6 months old.

It's possible that Lilia thought of this and decided to consider this Silver's 1st birthday, but if that were the case, there's a good 50% chance that Silver has actually been awake for 16 years of his life, which would actually be very clever since Aurora was 16. In the reverse, if Lilia decided to treat the day he found Silver as the day he was born, then there's a 50% chance that Silver is actually 18. Basically what I'm saying is I haven't got a fucking clue-)

Getting stuff out of my system so maybe I can sleep. So obviously I loved The Giggle and loved the Toymaker, but as a Thoschei shipper I can't express how important it is to me how impersonal the Toymaker was about the whole thing and while my dreams of old men making out have not been realied, the ghost of the Master hanging over the episode really emphasised that. Like, welcome home cheater jokes are great and I was getting lowkey irritated by how both the fans and the writers were making ALL of the Master's actions about the Doctor.

But I was also worried that with a campy game loving villain that would also have a love hate obsession with and resentment for the Doctor, RTD would basically say behold the Master only +++ this obviously had nothing to do with CC giving the Doctor a literal speech about being better than the Master introducing a Dia de los Muertos villain that has soooo much history with the Doctor but is also soooo very powerful and then reiterating that the Master hates themself and only wants to be the Doctor but can't because of essentialism posing as existentialism. nothing whatsoever.

But no. Again, I am a bit tired of the Master being presented mainly as not-Doctor and I do think that if Ten didn't timelock the Tardis, they wouldn't have chosen their pet planet specifically, but compare Saxon's No. This is my turn. Revenge. Best. Served. Hot. to the Toymaker's cold Best of three. Compare the Master drawing pleasure from playing Satan the accuser about humans-turned-toclafane to the Doctor specifically because it's their pet species to the Toymaker being himself attracted to humans because of their nature sth sth Johan Huizinga sth sth homo ludens and play as the foundation of culture sth sth 2001: SO with bone and ball sth sth murder as kickstarter of culture and play as kickstarter of culture. Look at Ten's addendum of If that's what you want to the offer he makes the Master in s3, emphasising that he wants to understand what is it that the latter is after, and at Fourteen's certainty that the Toymaker really is only after games.

Don't get me wrong, I'm far from throwing monogamy at either the Doctor or the Master and they probably both made out with the Toymaker, both individually and menage a trois. But if after literal weeks of holding my breath for an actual cameo I leave the episode fully sated after a gold tooth and laughing sounds and people from outside my Davy Jones' Locker stuck ghost ship notice it too, then I'd say RTD did some really good job hanging the Master's ghost over the story. And that was not just to fan serve. It also made a point about the differences between those relationships.

First, the OG notes from the outdated post:

→ This count is not about “which was the very first digimon-human contact”, and yes about people with a digivice. Because if we were going to count who was the first human to have contact with a digimon, it’s actually two and they’re Oikawa Yukio and Iori’s dad, Hida Hiroki.

→ I’m ignoring all the inconsistencies with other material (WS & ▽) because they seem to not match well with the original count. So, in this case, Ken’s statement in the anime (Aug 2000) is the one to be accounted for here. → I couldn’t think of how to include Maki & Daigo’s group in this because ▽ contradicts with the original lore’s math – The fact the Pt4 book released with the movie on Japanese theaters state them being in Elementary School the time they went to their adventure in the DW, and later the confession scene means they’re in University/College makes them possibly been Chosen Children way before 1995, and I’d take it granted that they were chosen by someone else IF weren’t for the Homeostasis being involved in the scene and the digivice being way too modern for that time (it was basically Taichi group’s model. If you look at Rui’s digivice in the leaked footage from DigiFes2022, his model seems to be different and an older version)

→ That said, Meiko is the only character in ▽ that does not fall into contradiction with the math count. Because in 1999 there was not only Taichi’s group, but also other 8 non-featured Chosen according to Kakudou’s notes. So we can consider Meiko one of those other 8 children.

→ When it comes to Wallace, I prefer to think he is game in the original math – Taichi and Hikari met that Koromon in 95, but they had no digivice until 1999. Which means it can be possible that Wallace had encountered Gummy-Choco’s egg before 1995 and only became an official Chosen Child later.

→ To avoid spoiling any detail about the movie itself, I’ll make sure to tell you they might have changed how the math works only. It’s not like, “everyone gets a digimon at the same time” but rather… “A X number of people get partnered with a digimon in different periods of a year” – Which means yes, you can still count Rui and Ukkomon as the origins of the Digimon partnership, but that later in the same year someone else (or, say, Wallace in the main timeline) got a partner months later.

→ That said, I’m opting to update this list and work within the idea that various sources of partnership (Homeostasis, Holy Beasts, etc) can be counted in the math. Remember – Homeostasis (not referred to as this in the OG series but yes in the novels) had selected Taichi & co., but the Holy Beasts chose Dai-Miya-Iori. And some other entity probably chose Ken in August 2000. This could explain why there’s a higher number of partnerships happening at the same time in Adv’99 and 02.

→ As I mentioned before, and indirectly supported by the staff (check the official timeline at the top of the list), ▽ has violated the lore to the point it goes in direct conflict with the new 02 movie and the entire timeline. So I guess it’s better to consider ▽ as its own timeline/Alternate universe than forcing it into the main timeline.

→ That said, and since Meiko does exist in Kizuna/main timeline, I suppose Maki and Daigo also do exist, and maybe they got their “ages” retconned and down to something suitable to the universe’s math count. They can still be part of the previous five kids mentioned in Adv’99 anime/novels, but they are probably around their teen years, or even early 20s instead, not fully adults working for the government I suppose. Or alternatively, just not Chosen yet. Pick your favorite route, Maki/Daigo fans!!

→ Yes, the Koromon from the very first movie IS NOT THE SAME PARTNERED WITH TAICHI. This never was confirmed, and was just fandom's theory. Considering how ▽ also made this mistake and possibly was one of the lore's violation, I prefer to believe this means it's not the same Koromon/Agumon partnered with Taichi in Adv'99.

Hello! I recently watched The Piano Teacher because of your recommendation, I liked the movie loads, but I’m not the smartest person ever and I was wondering what general thoughts you have on what the film is trying to say. Sorry if this is too vague.

the film is using freudian psychoanalysis of the masochistic fantasy to create a situation in which erika and walter each have their desires nominally satisfied by one another, but in ways that contravene what they actually wanted and leave both of them harmed (albeit quite differently) by the climactic act of rape. erika's masochistic fantasy is fulfilled, but in a punitive way that robs her of the control she sought as a counterpoint to her relationship with her domineering mother and absent father; walter's desire for a sexual relationship with his teacher also comes to fruition, but at the cost of him acting in a manner that he deems perverted and that runs counter to his ideas of 'correct' romance and sexual intimacy.

according to freud, a child's fantasy of being beaten comes in three phases. in the second phase, which is masochistic, the child's pleasure in witnessing a sibling or rival being beaten has been converted by guilt and sexual repression into the fantasy of the child themselves being beaten by the father; this is ultimately the result of incestuous desire for the father. for erika, her father's absence prevents her from either enacting this fantasy or moving beyond it to the third phase of freud's beating fantasy. stuck in the repressed, unconscious phase, she is emotionally restricted, particularly in her professional life, and engages in acts of self-harm directed specifically at her genitals—unconsciously trying to punish herself for her sexual interest in the father figure.

erika's mother controls every aspect of her personal life and dominates her, fighting with her physically and berating her. she specifically expresses disappointment that erika failed to become a successful concert pianist—essentially a wish for erika to have become the man of the house. thus, both mother and daughter attempt to cast one another as the absent father, though to different psychosexual ends. for erika, her total lack of control in her relationship with her mother, combined with her repressed childhood desire for her father, results in her seeking a sexually violent relationship in which she can live out her beating fantasy, with her lover now cast as the violent father. because her relationship with her mother has stymied all sexual expression and seemingly all non-professional interpersonal relationships as well, erika has no frame of reference for a sexual relationship—she becomes so stimulated by seeing the couple at the drive-in that she urinates—and can only conceive of it as a way to enact her masochistic fantasies.

the key for erika is that she wants to experience masochistic violence that she has chosen and asked a partner for; the fantasy only works for her if she is ultimately the one in control of the relationship (another way in which she identifies with a 'masculine' sexuality, unlike the freudian boy child who must assume a 'feminine' attitude in the third phase of the beating fantasy). this is why she becomes upset in the bathroom scene, when walter disobeys her commands; although she is a masochist, what she wants with her sexual partner is the opposite of what she has in her relationship with her mother, ie total control. after walter reads her list of sexual demands and rejects her, erika seeks sex with her mother, an overt act of incest in a relationship that has previously been strongly subtextually incestuous. at this moment, erika's conflation of her mother's domination over her with her absent father becomes most overt, but her mother refuses to engage in the acts of sexual violence that erika desires, meaning she must seek out walter again.

though we spend far less time with walter than erika, it's clear that to him there is allure to seeking a sexual relationship with an authority figure, in this case a teacher. however, walter ultimately wants reciprocity in his relationship in a way erika does not: he wants to touch her in the bathroom scene, he tells her he loves her at the hockey rink, he is initially both shocked and disgusted by her list of masochistic desires and sex acts. recall also that erika and walter initially connect over a mutual love of schumann and schubert, romantic composers, though erika disagrees with walter's interpretation of a schubert piece, telegraphing a fundamental incongruity between their respective views of romance and relationships, and their sexual desires.

thus, walter's rape of erika at the end of the film is in some sense also a break with his own sexual desires and mores. he views the act, and erika's masochistic desires in general, as perverted and immoral. by raping her he is in some sense engaging in the fantasy that she has been asking him for, but configuring the act as punitive (it's an angry reaction to the 'wrongness' he perceives in her for failing to have sex with him at the hockey rink) and violating the underlying premise of the fantasy by actually overriding her will, thus replicating and elevating the violence she experiences from her mother rather than subverting it, which was what she actually wanted. having been cast in the role of the violent father despite naturally gravitating toward a more 'feminine' sexual attitude, walter ends the film by acting out the paternal role (once again conflated with the maternal one through the act of locking erika's mother in the closet, so that walter is replacing her as well) with verisimilitude that erika never actually desired, simultaneously granting her wish and making a traumatic mockery of it. meanwhile, walter has finally gotten the sexual relationship that he desired with his teacher, but at the expense of his idea of sexual normalcy, and only by acting in a way he considers perverted.

for erika, the final cruelty is seeing walter laughing happily with his family at the recital. in the freudian beating fantasy, both phases one and two are marked by the need for exclusive incestuous love between the father and child; the beating of the sibling in phase one is construed as an expression of love toward the non-beaten child, whereas by phase two the repression of this genital interest has turned the fantasy into a desire for exclusive physical violence that stands in for the sexual act. for erika, seeing walter with his family is not just seeing the man who raped her laughing carelessly; more specifically, she is hurt by this demonstration of the non-exclusivity of his love. thus, her earlier acts of self-harm (directed at her genitals) turn into her stabbing herself in the shoulder, simultaneously an act of self-punishment for the masochistic fantasy and an externalisation of the pain and trauma walter has inflicted on her by breaking the rules of the beating fantasy—both through the rape and through the emotional infidelity.

Fossil Novembirb 1: The Chosen Ones

Neornithes, aka "Modern Birds" (whatever that means), encompasses every living dinosaur today

Not a single other kind of dinosaur managed to make it out of the Mesozoic Era

When you think of the sheer diversity of dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous, this is just bizarre - there were almost no Neornithes present whatsoever in the fossil record, but other dinosaurs - from Enantiornithes to Titanosaurs - were actually doing quite well, all things considered. They were everywhere!

So what even were Neornithes back in the Mesozoic?

A handful of extremely rare weirdos, is what they were!

We have four confirmed Neornithes from the Maastrichtian, the last age of the Cretaceous: three duck-like things (Vegavis, Teviornis, "Styginetta") and one chicken-like thing (Asteriornis). Everything else is too fragmentary at this time to determine if they are truly a Neornithine, or just closely related.

Now, the family tree of Neornithes, at least at the base, is very well defined: We know that ratites and tinamou diverged from all other birds first (forming the Palaeognathae group), leaving the rest in Neognathae. We know that Chickens and Ducks ("Fowl") diverged from the rest of birds next, in a group called Galloanserae, leaving the rest of birds in Neoaves.

Which means, theoretically, if there were duck-like and chicken-like things at the very end of the Cretaceous, there should also be:

early Palaeognaths (because if Neognathae exists, so do they)

early Neoavians (because of Galloanserae exists, so do they)

And we've got.... nothing. Nada. Zip.

This is what we call a "gap" in the Fossil Record - things we know should be there, but just... aren't.

There are many reasons for this - Neornithes have exceptionally delicate bones and don't fossilize well in general (hence the fun we have in the Cenozoic with all the scrappy material); they probably were quite rare as other forms of birdie dinosaurs were having their heyday; and they may have lived in locations where we have not sampled the fossils present particularly well (ie, the "global south")

Which means, yes, the missing fossils may be out there... or maybe not.

What we do know is:

at least one Palaeognath made it through

several duck-like things made it through

at least one chicken-like thing made it through

at least one Neoavian made it through

In fact, "Styginetta" and Teviornis are, possibly, early members of the weird Presbyornithid group - a group of duck-like birds that lived as waders, leading to them being affectionately named "Flamingo-Ducks". This group was exceptionally common in the early Cenozoic, and lasted through the Miocene - and it first appeared in the Cretaceous!

Ducks are true apocalypse survivors - multiple groups of them crawled through to the other side!

These animals were, in every way, "modern-type" birds - no teeth in the beak, shortened tail bones, powerful wings for flight. But they were far removed from modern ducks and chickens, lacking many of their key features.

Such a small, seemingly insignificant group... and only they managed to survive. Wild stuff!

Dave’s old life is cast aside and he is reborn (semi-literally) as a star child. It is an ending that has left many baffled, including me, but is ultimately a touching end and beginning.

Dave ends the story an evolved being, yet not so far detached from his human origin. He still has a great deal of emotion and curiosity - he becomes a baby because he simply is one when it comes to understanding the universe. He could go anywhere, do anything and yet he goes to earth. He goes and watches over it like a shiny toy, while his physical ties have been severed he’s still attached to it- almost like a mother, if we stay with the baby metaphor.

Eventually he will move on from it but for now he is a protector of sorts. The guardian of earth. He stops the bomb not for his own sake but because he simply wants humanity to continue on- he stops a potential doomsday!

It’s too bad this is completely uprooted in the following bits of the series. He is “beyond” emotion, he is on Europa. I would be fine if the evolution or planet was focused on even remotely besides the same few paragraphs, he’s transformed and cast aside. All of the prior meaning is rebuked, all of his humanity removed. See it wasn’t the transformation that did it but the story itself— as it decided to pivot and couldn’t just have him watching. He must be a blank slate. He must be elsewhere- he can’t even enjoy watching the other planet or if he does we don’t really hear of it.

Dave becomes more of a plot device than a person, as a star child there’s so many facinating things you could do with him. For one thing a dressing the trauma that came from that and before, and — again either guardian of earth - self chosen- or we actually see his involvement elsewhere. He becomes a just as much of a tool as the monolith.

Not only is his humanity stripped but his agency, in 2010 he describes himself as a dog on a leash a good number of times. While I absolutely adore that metaphor, it’s so tragic and not even acknowledged as such?! (Again so much could be considered cosmic horror and it’s either had waved or blankly accepted) he went from a near omnipotent being to LOSING LARGE CHUNKS OF TIME AND BEING USED AS A PROBE. He’s suddenly beyond humanity when he was so attached before; he becomes apathetic incredibly fast. (Which, as a immortal being is understandable but it’s absolutely unearned and not in character) -> my issue isn’t with him becoming a tool of some higher power it’s that it’s sort of hand waved “it is how it is” and not addressed how messed up and interesting it is.

Now I’ve yet to read 3001 but my point here broadly stands. I fully believe it should’ve ended after 2010, as it comes across as very very clear it was a two book story and 2061 is a whole separate one with some characters tossed into it.

Arcs were over. There was a bit more explanation as to what happened in the first one; we got closure alongside Heywood. Things were set up for the future but it was more in a way for you to view them as fully developed not exactly a sequel. (Like the Hal 10,000 idea). It’s frustrating because Dave as a Starchild can lead to so many interesting things and it was a beautiful idea in 2001 but … after that it mistreats and mischarectetizes Him so fast in a way that frustrates me to no end. Maybe if there was an actual focus or exploration I could understand the direction but making him a cut out god figure is such a sad end.

A child of the stars still clinging to its former life, its humanity…

Oh what could have been. I’d like to imagine Dave would’ve never completely… not been Dave, yes over centuries he may subdue emotions, his interest may waver but what we get is a name and maybe some memory.

I fully enjoy 2010, my issues with Dave in that are minimal just that it’s a little sad he swaps guardianship but I can understand. I was excited and interested in Europa… only for that too also get sort of ignored.

There’s also some interesting points to come out of 2061 - how the monolith works, conversing with Hal and he does seem to have a genuine interest in study but it’s also where he’s sort of a name drop and little else

It’s the stripping him of his emotion and character that really gets me - as it’s a route that isn’t earned as Clark absolutely does not write about trauma or if he does it’s a off handed “ok so everyone dying and the monolith was a little scary but now I’m blue and don’t care” it’s even true for human characters idk

I pick and choose what I want to keep from the further books honestly, we’ll see if 3001 fixes this or if this rant grows longer. I’m just sad, Dave’s such a fascinating character and he’s so mistreated?
