#ADHD posting.

I think for every feelgood story about a person who got an ADHD diagnosis later in life, tried out meds and found them incredibly useful, and is now thriving, probably runs their own business and maybe even thinks of ADHD as their superpower, Finnish media (and maybe international media too, I dunno if these stories are a trope elsewhere) should be obligated to publish two stories about people who are long-term unemployed, unable to work and/or in prison because of their ADHD.
Just saying.

people will hear you talk about struggling with mental illness and say “you can do anything if you just put your mind to it”. brother what part of the body does the mental illness happen in. what do you think is the problem

Please do things to strengthen your attention span. It stresses me out so much when people just accept their small attention spans and cater to them without any acknowledgment that they are making it worse by doing that.
There is a reason attention spans are worse now and it didn’t just happen by chance. Media and the internet designed it that way and we went with it because it was easier.
Some of us with ADHD and brain fog need to meet ourselves where we’re at and exercise our attention span by watching a two minute video instead of a one minute video. Some of us need to sit down and read a novel with our phones turned off.
Wherever you’re at, just realize that not doing things that feel hard will keep making your attention span worse.

sometimes you just have to let yourself be a bit neurodivergent.
i hate going out, it gives me a lot of anxiety and sensory input that i dont like, and i am often forced to talk to people.
so i do this thing on more difficult days, or sometimes just for fun, where i "bring a fictional character with me". i walk and imagine Fictional Character walking next to me. they talk to me, reassure me, hype me up, whatever i need them to do.
today dean winchester came christmas shopping with me. he went over the list with me of stuff i needed to get, told me i was doing a good job every time i finished in a certain shop, reminded me to take a deep breath when i got a little overwhelmed.
and yea. its kinda silly. and i know its just me talking to myself in a different voice, but it Works! especially since all of my special interests/hyperfixations tend to be tv/movie related.
so do what you gotta do to Get Shit Done. stop holding yourself to neurotypical standards. if you need Fictional Character to tell you you're doing a good job, do it! if you need Favourite Singer to walk you to school, do it! yea it might feel silly but you're literally fighting against your own brain to get stuff done every single day. you can have a little self indulgent daydream, as a treat.

the curse of adhd:
i will remember with absolute clarity, when the thought strikes me that i have a text to send someone, that this is the fourth time in three days i've attempted to send this specific text
i will forget, in the time it takes me to pick up my phone, that i picked it up intending to send a text

the most helpful thing i have ever seen from neurodivergent internet spaces is “THERE ARE OTHER TIMES OF DAY TO BRUSH YOUR TEETH”. this has genuinely saved me from executive dysfunction spirals so many times.

I made this a long time ago but for some reason never posted! It is my quick guide to protecting yourself against burnout as a person with ADHD and ASD.
Of course it is all about meeting your support needs at the end of the day, which are completely individual and may vary over time, but this could function as a guide if you have a hard time figuring out where to start! 🫶🏻 💙💙💙

Here's something they don't tell you when you're prescribed ADHD meds, or, at least, here's something they didn't tell me:
Maybe, underneath whatever restlessness, hyperactivity and/or anxiety your untreated ADHD has been causing you all your life, you're actually not a very spontaneous/flexible/energetic/upbeat/snappy person. Like, at all.
Maybe you've also got some traits associated with the autism spectrum (that's pretty likely actually, ADHD and ASD often go kinda hand in hand) – but maybe you don't even realise that yet, or maybe you don't think they're very prominent, because your ADHD traits have been masking those other traits so effectively all your life.
Or maybe in your heart of hearts, you're simply a pretty boring person.
The ADHD medication is not going to change your personality, but if you're one or more of the things listed above, it's going to make all that stuff seem more prominent by taking away some of the restlessness that's been masking it before. And that might make you feel like you're a bit of a different person than you used to be before.
And personally? Personally, I think there are enough benefits to the ADHD meds that I definitely don't want to stop taking them. But at the same time, I realise I have less energy for dealing with social situations than I used to have before, I get overwhelmed more easily than I used to, and overall, the boring side of me (that's always been on display to some extent) has become even more prominent than it used to be before.
It's not all great, but it is what it is, and in any case, I think it's better to be deeply boring than to feel antsy and deeply stressed out 24/7.
Anyway! That's just my experience, but I wanted to share it with you guys because all I saw before I got my meds was stories about them making people's lives so much better it feels like magic without any downsides. And yeah, that just hasn't been my experience at all.

*takes your face gently in my hands and looks sincerely into your eyes* listen. your home does not need to look like a showroom. homes are meant to be lived in, and that means a certain amount of mess. it's okay if there is clutter on your desk or if you don't remember the last time you cleaned your oven. mess is morally neutral. but at the same time, you deserve to live in an environment that is safe and comfortable, and that means someone has to clean sometimes. things like mold, spoiled food, and dirty litter boxes are genuine health hazards and need to be dealt with before they make someone sick. think of cleaning less as "my home needs to be completely spotless" and more as "I am an animal and I need a habitat that is free of hazardous material." it's okay. *kisses you on the forehead and tucks you into a blanket*
(and of course it is always acceptable and even good for you to ask someone else to help you with cleaning if it's physically or mentally difficult for you. even if you're paying them to do it.)

Can we please stop putting down autistic, ADHD, and other neurodivergent people whose traits are considered 'cringe', 'dorky', 'weird' or something else considered to be socially unacceptable?
We get enough shit from neurotypical people—we don't need to throw each other under the bus too.
"But they're making us look bad!"
I. Don't. Care. It's wrong to put each other on hierarchies. Simple.
