It’s Morphin Time!

Netflix is releasing a Power Rangers reunion just in time for the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ 30th Anniversary. Rita Repulsa has returned and vows to destroy the team before they even become Rangers. And she definitely means business as she’s already...well, spoilers in the trailer. Now a new teenager with attitude will have to take her place amongst the Rangers.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always stars David Yost (Billy / Blue Ranger), Walter Jones (Zack / Black Ranger), Karan Ashley (Aisha / Yellow Ranger), Catherine Sutherland (Kat / Pink Ranger), Johnny Yong Bosch (Adam / Green Ranger), Steve Cardenas (Rocky / Red Ranger), Richard Steven Horvitz (Alpha 5), Barbara Goodson (Rita Repula), and Charlie Kersh (Minh Kwan, Trini’s daughter). The special is written by Alwyn Dale and Becca Barnes. Charlie Haskell directs.

“Make my monster grow!” 

You opened your mouth to explain there wasn’t a need for magic, then snapped it shut when Rita’s hand snaked out of its roomy sleeve. Her well-groomed nails could have easily embedded themselves in your skin. You didn’t feel in harm’s way. Shrill gloating was the closet thing to torture, so far, that she had subjected you to. 

Considering you were actually fond of Rita’s screech, being captured wasn’t so bad. You weren’t sure why she was boasting, though. The Putties had apprehended you. There’d been zero resistance. Plus Rita Repulsa’d been kind enough to provide a couch. Which she had parked herself on, very modest dress invading your space. 

Modest, aside from the bra. Eat your heart out, Madonna.

Again you wondered whether to explain no magic wanders were needed to make “her” monster grow. Because it was hard to say no to this villainess. Supervillainess. Her and Lord Zedd were not an item. She made that much clear. The Putty Patrollers were outside. Presumably at her beck and call, but only if she screamed loudly enough. Which wouldn’t be a problem. Not that you necessarily planned on making her scream. The sofa was potentially ample enough for sixty-nining. Rita, once disrobed, would be dainty enough to be picked up and satisfied orally. 

A series of wonderful visions paraded through your mind. Rita deciding to keep her collar on. Rita letting her cups… er, cones fall from her pert breasts. Rita letting her hair down. Rita thwacking one of the Rangers who decided to rescue you. Rita letting the Putty Patrol escort the Power Ranger out due to a truce because your magic staff is just that good. 

“I’m not wearing underwear!” she shrieked. 

You winced. Dragged from your daydream of alternating positions. Silvery blue-accentuated eyes narrowed at your reaction.

“Well, technically you’re not going commando.”

Rita tilted her head. “Huh?” 

She followed your gaze. Rita laid the wand across your laps (very trusting of her!). Then her hands snapped to her bust, unsnapping the spiked brassiere. Her Elizardbethan collar came off with it.

Despite her general modesty, and having been stuck in a space dumpster for millennia, Rita Repulsa had a pretty even tan.

If you're still doing the voice actor thing what about the VA of Hel, Barbara Goodson I believe it's her name. I just love her voice and how expressive (can I describe a voice like that?) she is the perfect choice for my wife Hel, sadly Intsy doesn't want to give us a Hel alt even though Surtr and Freya got one

(she is also the voice of the male kid in persona 5 which is surprising)

YES YES YES YES.

Also fun fact, she’s the voice (just the voice only!) of Rita Repulsa from the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, and also Mother Talsin from Star Wars: The Clone Wars! So between Hel, Rita, and Talsin, she’s awesome at playing sinister characters.

So emotional performance is weird to really evaluate because Hel doesn’t have much real emotion; her voice is supposed to sound lifeless (ba dum tsss) and devoid of feeling. I think when I was making my categories I SHOULD have said performance over emotion. But anyways, Barbara is PERFECT. Her cackle in the Book 3 ending cinematic while she fights Alfonse, that spoken line where she asks Eir why she’s upset, her slow and ragged tones… Such a fantastic casting choice.

And she absolutely fits Hel, there’s no doubt about that. Barbara’s been playing old women and malevolent female characters for years, and I don’t know if it’s because of the standard VA bullshit that goes on but she should be casted a LOT more; now that sadly Philece Sampler has left us, she might need to be our new Niime.

Because I’m strictly judging range based on FEH characters, I can’t really say anything about that since she’s only voiced Hel. But listening to her other work, I’d say there’s some range, even though she’s usually type-casted.

Barbara Goodson’s a 9/10. She brings a fantastic performance of Hel. And hold strong, friend: We WILL get a Hel alt someday, Surtr only just got his last year in 2021. We just have to be strong and have faith ;w;

As much as I want to say this was incredible. It really was a not so great story capitalizing on nostalgia.

It was fun, it was indeed nostalgic, but the story was lacking.

I mean don't get me wrong the TV show was way better when you're 7 years old. Watching it in adulthood it's hard to keep attention.

The BOOM STUDIOS comics are brilliant. They have the medium to tell good stories for the grown up fans.

It was good to see their trying to finally give some closure to Thuy Trang's character's absence for 23 years because of her death. And the final tributes to her and the recently deceased Jason David Frank who committed suicide, still sent a somber shiver up my spine for my dead childhood heroes.

It's worth a watch, perhaps in the background getting ready for your day. The special effects are really nice despite people nitpicking them. Just don't "over-expect", ultimately it's still overall made on a level for 7 year olds.

It was good to see other old faces return. And to see David Yost take the lead in the special since he had conceptualized it and tried to pitch it to Hasbro.

a Power Rangers x RWBY crossover in the same vein as the JL x RWBY ones would be so fun, like colourful teens on both sides, like Rita creating powered up kaiju sized Grimm (and still voiced by Barbara Goodson, obviously) and probably teaming up with a villain we've not seen much of (like Thornmane cos he could use the Arrowfell tech to direct Grimm around or at least gather them and Rita uses her magic to take control of them, or hell Merlot if he's not in JL x RWBY, or even if he is and gets away at the end - his whole thing would gel well with the 'make my monster grow' stuff)

and obviously the fun of the Rangers not being able to morph for whatever reason and having to learn to use Aura, Semblances and new weapons - and then conversely, either Remnant gets (temporarily) hooked up to the Morphin Grid or RWBY just go to Earth, whichever, and getting their own Ranger morphs (like how TMNT/MMPR 2 gave the Rangers mutant forms and the Turtles got the Dimension X morphers)

could be very goofy, very fun (think the tone for the Rangers would have to borrow more from the Boom Studios comics stuff like Shattered Grid to gel more with RWBY's), i would enjoy it
