Guys, I’ve read the Wild Robot

And let me tell you, if I hadn’t recently taken a Children’s Literature class in college, I would’ve said this was the best middle-grade book I’ve read since elementary/middle school. I almost read this book in one night (I was sleepy 😴) like I couldn’t put it down.

The heart behind this book is astounding and it never shies away from showing complex and difficult concepts. You will fall in love with Roz and her gosling son along with all of the other animal on the island.

If you’ve got younger ones, I highly recommend reading this to them or having a little book club moment with them. However, be prepared for whatever hard questions may come your way (i.e. circle of life and climate issues). You know your child and how much they can handle/understand. If you’re like me and much older, it’s a quick read and a great way to finish off a long day. It’s a part of a trilogy and you bet I’m patiently waiting for my hold on a copy at the library.

If the movie is anything like the book (which, given a rewatch of the trailer, it’s looking like so), we are in for a special treat.

Synopsis: in home economics, you get randomly assigned to a partner to raise a ‘child’ - a robot baby meant to simulate a real infant’s needs. Things definitely get… interesting, to say the least.

knowing how he was raised, Riddle isn’t exactly the best parent figure - speaking to children as if they were fully grown adults, either too quickly or too slowly.

adamantly refusing the thought of naming the kid at first, because “Naming the robot is a risk far too large for me to take. The number of seniors that have failed this assignment due to growing attached to their supposed child…I absolutely cannot let this drag Heartslabyul’s dorm ranking down!”

work division wise, you’re unfortunately tasked with most of the first-hand child rearing things - feeding her, changing diapers, rocking her until she stopped fussing…

though, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t do his fair share of work.

all expenses are charged to him, as well as the assembly of the cot(which he spent at least five minutes scrutinising to check if it was safe) and pretty much all of the cleaning of the dirty laundry(how can such a small thing produce so much grime?)

somewhere along the line, you two work out an agreement where you take turns taking care of Rose.

whenever Riddle's the one taking care of her, he possesses one of those infinite mom bags as well as a baby carrier.

the only downside of this arrangement is that berating and punishing students are harder when it's his turn, because Rose isn't exactly fond of him raising his voice.

got probably the best behaved baby, with Harley being a literal angel - never fussing or crying, always giggly, okay with others holding him… Deuce couldn't be happier!

with Harley being so well behaved, both you and Deuce's schedule went as per usual - Deuce being able to go to class with a baby that never disrupted it, as well as to get the serotonin of looking at Harley's face during lessons.

Jaune: *Sigh* Professor Goodwitch, i honestly don't know what to talk about with you. You can ask my family about my past all you want. I think i'm fine.

Glynda: Someone who is "fine" doesn't almost destroy someone's mind with memories, Jaune.

Jaune: *rolling his eyes, while internally cringing to what he is about to say* She's a simple robot, Miss Goodwitch. I highly doubt she was made with the expectations of getting flooded with memories, feelings and sensation.

Glynda: Jaune, i can see your own disgust at what you just said. *Sigh* You don't see her as a machine. You stayed with her, awake, for two days straight so you could "fix" her. *Shaking her head* People don't act like that for a "simple robot".

Jaune: Tsk, fine. But still, my points stands: She never experienced human sensation, only an approximation. And she never experienced anything bad. The worst she lived through was boredom.

I’m reading a fanfiction where Agent Stone is unofficially indirectly technically but also definitely adopted by the Wachowski Family and now I cannot unsee it.

For some context, the family is trying to figure out how to get Shadow to come to them without forcing him or making him feel pressured or unwanted, and Agent Stone gets involved.

Maddie invites him to dinner, and what I thought was going to be the best overprotective sons defending their loyal and powerful and loving family banter turned into the crackiest family dinner with an unexpecting, slightly grief ridden and emotionally stunted Agent Stone, desperately trying to wrap his head around the three aliens that have been kicking his ass for who knows how long being in a normal family???

With human parents???

Who like, house them and feed them and love them and teach them and nurture them???

And like, do stuff normal parents do in a normal family???

I’ve never felt so estatic since that one time the author my favorite MHA fantasy AU fanfic that got discontinued posted the endings and notes she had for the rest of the fanfiction.

EXAMPLE WITH DIRECT QUOTE FROM THE CHAPTER:

Tails: “Break started on Saturday. One of us can go with him, Mom! Make sure he stays sitting!”

Stone: “Break?”

Maddie: “Fall break. From school.”

Stone: “They go to school, too?”

Tails, rolling his eyes: “If you’re going to be surprised by every normal thing we do with our family, we’re going to be here all night.”

I read the chapter during my Sociology 100 lecture and had to stop many times to keep from laughing.

Stones astonishment at a normal, stable, healthy, albeit non-traditional family, Sonic being Sonic, Knuckles being Knuckles, Tails continuing to be the national treasure that he is, and Maddie and Tom being the patient, understanding parents that we’ve always seen them be.

You can’t buy joy like this. You can only find it on AO3, from people (mostly children, college students, or working class adults) who either have too much time or no time at all and yet somehow still get to share their genius with the entire world.

Reading this shit felt like getting the found family trope injected into my veins through IVF fluid.

Here’s a DIRECT QUOTE from my favorite part of the newest chapter:

Knuckles: “There will never be a truce, and I will never think of you as anything more than a small, weak man with questionable taste in partners.”

*literally like three fucking minutes later, after Knuckles has been fed a well cooked meal from Agent Stone*

if you do specifics, reader is non-binary with masc terms. Reader also knows Aizawa from him being their teacher, but they knew him from childhood as a family friend. Reader’s dad is unavailable—you can take that however you want.

Platonic Aizawa x Teenage Reader

Aizawa had known you for most of your life. Not that he had been present for most of it. Aizawa had been close to your father as they were both underground Pro Heroes. Your father had taken Aizawa under his wing and basically became his mentor and showed him the ropes. They worked together often and became friends. Your father was super friendly with people and would invite Aizawa over to his house to ensure that he was eating properly and etc. Aizawa met your mother and was over often.

Your mother was kind to Aizawa but you could tell it was strained kindness. One day, your father and Aizawa were going after a drug smuggling operation and it went south. The drug smugglers were operating out of an old chemical processing plant. There were leftover containers and equipment from the plant. Your father ended up comatose in the hospital after an explosion caused by a fire quirk hitting nearby containers filled with chemicals.

After that day, Aizawa rarely came over. Your mother grew very hostile and rude. She consistently ignored you and you grew up trying to please a woman who hated everyone. When you did get your mother’s attention, it was never good. She’d constantly berate you and make snide comments about you. Nothing you ever did was good enough for her. Eventually she pulled the plug on your father and she inherited the money he made. She barely spent a dime on you.

Most of your clothes were old and had been repaired several times over. You got the best grades in your class at school despite the bullying. You were bullied because your clothes and everything were old and worn, you hardly socialized and you had barely any self confidence. In middle school you began to cut. It started out as a means to punish yourself so failing to live up to your mother’s standards. Every time you disappointed her or she chastised you, you cut yourself. Later it became a habit and a means to punish yourself due to your self hatred.

You knew your dad was an underground hero and you wanted to be like him. You wanted to become a hero and make enough money to create a home/facility for children whose parents didn’t want them or whose parents died. You didn’t want other children to have to suffer like you did. You began training for the entrance exam for UA. Your quirk allows you to look into your opponent’s eyes or make sounds that cause hallucinations and vertigo. However it only works on organic beings so the robots in the entry exam were difficult for you to fight.

Despite gaining a few dozen points from helping others and managing to take down a few robots, you didn’t make the cut for the hero course. You ended up in general studies but continued to train on your own. You eventually roped your classmate Shinso into your training routine to help him and have a training partner. When the sports festival came around, you managed to do pretty well. You even managed to make it into the semifinals of the third round. You lost to Todoroki due to his ice.

Shinso was the only person who knew about your cutting and he helped you break the habit. After your fight, he came to check on you to make sure you weren’t going to hurt yourself. After consoling each other, you both returned to the stands. After the festival, you had packed your bag and were about to leave when Aizawa got in your way. The moment he saw you during the entrance exam, he knew who you were. He still felt an immense amount of guilt for not saving your father. After the festival he asked to sit down and talk to you.

During that time, he introduced himself and told you about his past and what kind of person your father was. He told you about how your father helped him and that he felt it was only right for him to help you. You both talked and Aizawa was surprised to find out that your mother had taken your father off of hospice. He wasn’t made aware that your father died. After your talk, you and Shinso began to train with Aizawa and he eventually found out about your self harm scars and your intent to quit. He got you a therapist and you began to work on healing.

After the attack at the summer camp, UA decided to move the students into the dorms. Despite it not being necessary, Aizawa decided to visit your house to ask your mother to let you go to UA. You had been so hopeful about the dorms. This was your chance to finally get out of the toxic environment that was your home. Your mother had become even more toxic and borderline abusive since you enrolled at UA. During the conversation between Aizawa and your mother, you snapped at her after she blamed Aizawa for your father’s death. You yelled at her telling her that it wasn’t his fault. You shouted saying that living with her was miserable and if your father felt even the slightest bit as miserable as you do then he would probably choose death over having to be near her.

Your mother was stunned. But she quickly recovered and told you that you shouldn’t put words in other people’s mouths. Just because you like to hurt yourself and make yourself ugly with scars doesn’t mean anyone else does. You should be grateful she’s put up with you for so long. Hearing that your mother knew you were cutting and never tried to help you broke something in you. You ran out of the room and that was when Aizawa decided that your mother was unfit to care for you and he became your temporary guardian. After you packed what little you had, you left with Aizawa. As he drove, he kept looking back at you in the mirror and saw just how broken that whole situation had left you.

He saw how little you had and decided to drive to the mall to help you get some decorations for your dorm. Despite your constant pleas and reassurances that you were fine, your body language said otherwise. Despite your reluctance to let Aizawa buy you anything, you left the mall with a couple posters, some new clothes, string lights, glow in the dark stars, new stationary, snacks and few other things. When you got to UA, Aizawa helped you bring everything to your dorm and left. After you and Shinso helped set up each other’s dorm rooms, you left to go find Aizawa.

That night, you found Aizawa and gave him a hug. You buried your face in his chest as you tried not to cry. You told him how you don’t blame him for what happened and he shouldn’t either. And that wether or not he likes it, you view him as a father figure. You thanked him profusely for helping you out even if he only did it out of guilt. He changed your life and you’ll always be grateful to him for that. He wrapped his arms around you and told you you were welcome. He let you cry on him until you were done. He walked you back to your dorm and told you that he still wasn’t going to go easy on you during training. You smiled and bid him goodnight before heading inside. Aizawa smiled to himself as he looked up at the night sky, promising his old mentor that he would guide you until you were ready to do things yourself. I've been thinking about Linda Hamilton's mysterious role in S5. Leaks tend to agree that she plays a military character of some sort, but I dunno how difficult a guess that is to make given how much of a gun-toting badass her Terminator character is.

Most of ST's guest stars tend to be cast in roles that reflect the classic 80s movies they were in -- Paul Reiser plays a representative of an exploitative institution like in Aliens; Sean Astin solves a puzzle map that leads to underground tunnels like in The Goonies; Robert Englund plays (the father of) a heavily-scarred, mind-walking child murderer like in A Nightmare on Elm Street, etc -- but is that true for all of them?

What does Larry Kline (the slimy Mayor who screws over small businesses to protect the interests of a large corporation) have in common with Cary Elwes's most famous role (the dashing, swashbuckling farmhand-turned-pirate from Princess Bride)? The similarities may not be immediately obvious, but I think they're clearer when you remember that Elwes also played Robin Hood -- Larry Kline is an ironic reversal of the working-class hero Elwes is known for.

What if Linda Hamilton has been cast as an ironic reversal of Sarah Connor?

Sarah Connor is the mother of humanity's future savior, and by Terminator 2, the burden of ensuring that he survives being the target of a genocidal time-travelling AI has turned her into a hardened solider plagued by nightmares of children dying in an apocalypse she's helpless to prevent.

You can hardly blame her for feeling helpless. Even without the time-travelling robots, she's just one woman trying to make a stand against powerful institutions: the military-funded lab that's ignorantly creating the AI her son is destined to oppose; the asylum doctors who think she's a raving lunatic unfit to raise a child.

It's very reflective of 80s anxieties -- not just the Cold War threat of nuclear annihilation, but the conservative threat of social annihilation in the name of silencing misunderstood minorities.

A reversal of Sarah Connor would, therefore, be someone who is still obsessed with protecting children from a rogue (time-travelling? 🤞) hivemind -- but from the conservative, institutionalized power side of things.

In other words: exactly the sort of antagonistic force that was foreshadowed in the S4 epilogue.

(Should the leaks be true, then this would be the real reason for casting Hamilton in a military role.)

Following this train of thought: if we're getting a villain who's focused on "protecting" children, then what does that suggest about the fact that Holly Wheeler -- 7 year-old sister of a gay Hellfire member and frequent innocent witness to The Horrors that surround him -- is shaping up to be one of Henry's targets in S5?

Let's talk about Ted and Karen.

I feel like these two tend to be misunderstood by the fandom. Either they're frothing bigots who would kick Mike out of the house the instant they found out he was queer, or they're chill allies who have been assuming that Mike was dating Will this whole time.

But that's what Will's parents are like. As a visible gay kid who's playing the stereotypical Sad Gay Boy archetype, it makes sense for Will to have parents that represent the obvious extremes of queer acceptance: Lonnie is never going to be convinced that it's anything other than shameful for his son to be queer, and Joyce is never going to be convinced that there's anything wrong with the way her son loves.

But Mike is the invisible, ambiguously straight-passing kid deep in the throes of comphet -- his role is to surprise the audience by subverting their expectations. And so it's important, I think, that his parents represent the subtler attitude that best reflects his story: the ignorant conformists.

They're the sort of people who get offended when they're accused of bigotry -- they're not hateful, heaven forbid! -- but who still passively support bigoted systems because they refuse to stand up like Sarah Connor or Joyce Byers and challenge the status quo.

While I do believe that "our son with a girl?" is a queer-coded line, I don't think the point was necessarily to suggest that Ted knows about Mike's queerness.

Consider the full context of that scene: Brenner was pressuring the Wheelers to rat Mike out so that this weird kid he was hiding (literally in his closet at one point!) could be apprehended, and he easily won them over with a little "protect the children" fearmongering:

The Wheelers want to support Mike -- but they can only understand his behaviour within the heteronormative white suburban context they're used to, and they'll readily trust authorities they absolutely should not be trusting to explain what help he needs.

Unlike Lonnie, though, the Wheelers have the capacity to change in this regard. They immediately clocked the ridiculousness of the town's Satanic Panic in S4, and the last time we saw them, they demonstrated a promising willingness to question authority and roll their eyes at conservative fearmongering.

But they haven't completed their redemption arc just yet. Holly's disappearance will be an important test of their commitment to this change in attitude.

Picture a redux of that S1 scene, with Hamilton's character in Brenner's role: "I understand your skepticism. It seems ridiculous that there are people in our town who are so committed to hurting children. But cultists are a different breed. Do you remember what happened to Will Byers four years ago? You don't really believe that he randomly got lost in the woods for a week, do you? The same week another child was found dead in the quarry? We can help your daughter, but only if you act now. Tell us where your misguided son and that deeply unwell boy he's a little too close to have gone."

Do they give in to the fearmongering and throw Mike under the bus for Holly's sake?

Or do they clock this bullshit for what it is and decide to peek behind the curtain -- and finally become the sort of parents Mike needs them to be?
