look I'm not a proponent of organised religion but I think it is important to remember that as we (as individuals and as a society) move away from mass religion, there are roles that religion has played in our lives that are important need replacing.
no need for prayer, but it's important to find time in your day for reflection or meditation. no need to confess your sins, but you do need someone you can admit your problems and secrets to. no need for scripture or doctrine, but it will make your life easier if you have a (flexible!) set of personal values to live by. no need to go to church and meet with the congregation, but having a (preferably local) community and a block of time every week or so reserved for gatherings will keep you sane and grounded.
so many treatments offered up for mental health - from mindfulness to talking therapy to gratitude journals to Groups of all kinds - are intended to fulfil the higher emotional needs that religion (for all its MANY flaws and often in a VERY fucked up and unhealthy way) covered. I'm not saying be religious, but I AM saying that if you're not, it might be a bad idea to let that niche get filled in with more work and media consumption instead of self-reflection and community connection. Not believing in a higher power doesn't exempt you from these needs.

Great job everyone. Now we’re going to go into puppy position. Just put your arms out in front of you, bend your head down between your hands and naturally raise your cute little puppy butts up into the air. Take a deep breath and shake your puppy butts. That’s right. Give your tail a cute little wiggle. Go ahead and stick your tongue out of your mouth and pant. You want to take those big deep heavy breaths, making sure you’re getting the full puppy position experience. Such good little puppies. Go ahead and Bark. Good job puppies.
Now we’re going to go into some bunny bounces. That’s right, push yourself up onto your knees and then bring those arms up right under your cute little bunny breasts. Arms tucked into your sides, elbows pulled tight. Give your nose a little wrinkle just to get in the mood and shake that butt to get the bunny tail feeling. And then go ahead and bounce those bunny butts up and down. Good little bunnies bouncing your cute little bunny butts up and down. Bouncy little bunny butts. Great job little bunnies.
Now we’re going to do some big kitty stretches, so go ahead and roll over onto your backs. Raise your arms above your head and take a deep breath. Stretch your legs out, all the way down pointing your toes all the way. And let out a big yawn relaxing your body as you stretch wider than you’ve ever stretched yourself out. Give a nice big breath in curling up a bit, and yawn stretching all the way out. You’re such relaxed little kitties. Breathing in and letting it all out with a yawn. Perfect little sleepy kitties.
Now sit up and be good little people. Forgetting all about being a good little puppy, a great little bunny, and a perfect little kitty, so that you can be a good little person. Thank you for joining us for this special yoga class and we hope to see you for another class next week. Remember, you can always come back for any of our classes, we’d love to have you.
