In this article, we will explore the importance of DEM studies and delve into the various problems it can solve, demonstrating its versatility and impact across diverse fields.
I. Understanding Discrete Element Modeling (DEM)
Before we dive into the importance of DEM studies, it's essential to grasp the fundamentals of Discrete Element Modeling itself. DEM is a computational technique that simulates the behavior of a large number of individual particles. Each particle is treated as a discrete entity and follows specific rules and interactions with other particles. These interactions are governed by various force laws, including contact forces, friction, and collision dynamics. By tracking the motion and interactions of these particles over time, DEM can provide valuable insights into the behavior of granular materials.
DEM Fundamentals
At the core of DEM lies the discrete nature of particles. Unlike continuum-based methods, DEM models materials as a collection of individual particles, each with its own properties and interactions. These particles move within a virtual space and collide with one another, creating complex dynamics that mirror real-world granular materials.
The essential components of a DEM simulation include:
Particles: These represent the individual grains or particles within the material.
Interactions: DEM defines the rules governing how particles interact with each other, including contact forces, friction, and restitution coefficients.
Time Integration: DEM calculates the motion of particles over discrete time steps, accounting for forces and interactions at each step.
Boundaries and Constraints: The simulation environment often includes boundaries and constraints to model specific scenarios accurately.
DEM Applications
The versatility of DEM has led to its adoption in various fields and industries. Some notable applications of DEM include:
Geotechnical Engineering: DEM is used to study soil mechanics, soil-structure interactions, and landslide prediction.

Pairing; Yandere Miguel O’hara x reader
Synopsis; the aftermath of your escape attempt.
Word count; 1.1k
Reader description; Female/GN
TW; yandere themes, dark themes, kidnapping, minor talk of wounds.
Notes; {first part.}
"Are you comfortable?"
His query provokes annoyance. While, yes, the fluff provided by both the couch and large puffy blankets did satisfy you, you'd never express this to Miguel. Miguel is at your side, clad in a tight white shirt and Grey sweatpants. In his hands are a platter holding a drunk and a plate of breakfast.
"No." You retort; the way it's spoken is colder than you intended. But why would you care? He deserves every bit of hatred spewed from your lips.
The current time is eight in the morning, and the last thing on Miguel's today's list is fighting. Especially in your condition. Miguel releases an obstinate short-lived sigh, clearly not giving in to your stubbornness. He moves from your side to your front. Irratedly, you bark his name in an empty threat. "Eat." He persist, his voice losing a bit of the softness he talked with before.
"I promise I didn't drug it. If that's why you're not eating."
Ah, yes, you forgot being drugged was a possibility when he handles your food.
Back when you first got abducted, you understandably were resistant to any form of tenderness. You acted callous. Ignoring Miguel when you didn't require to communicate your needs. Miguel wasn't too appreciative. Nevertheless, he was understanding due to your circumstances, and for a while, he begrudgingly left you alone. One day, Miguel wasn't having the best day; to say the least, his day had been extremely stressful. All he wanted was to be comforted by your touch, and of course, you aren't giving him any, so he sought it.
You sat at the dining table, eating leftovers from the night before. Miguel entered the shared home, going into the kitchen. Wanting your affection, he forgets about your refutation and awkwardly leans down, puckering his lips to signal a kiss. You simply turn away. Pride wounded, Miguel retreats, angrily storming out of the room, and plops down on the couch. A couple of minutes pass, and you walk out of the kitchen, a glass of soda in hand, and sit across from him. Miguel eyes your beverage with a malevolent idea forming.
Fortunately, on Miguel's part, you leave for the restroom. In his impulsive state, Miguel quickly departs from the living room to the kitchen. This wasn't the first occasion Miguel thought of paralyzing you with a sedative. On top of the fridge were the pills. He flicks the bottle open, popping two tablets in his calloused palm. He returns to the living room, dropping them into the liquid, and using your straw, he mixes the drink until there's only a slight visible powder at the bottom.
Miguel rues his decision. Instead of earning your trust, he loses the faith that you had in him. The exact opposite of what he strived to attain.
Famished and tired of Miguel's whining, you begrudgingly accept the platter. You settle the platter onto your lap. On the plate is French toast, the mixture of butter and syrup creates a brownish-orange color. On the side is cold tea with a handful of ice cubes floating at the top.
Grabbing the butter knife, you slice the toast creating a rift and allowing the syrup to spill onto the glass plate. Bringing the fork to your mouth, you take a small bite. It tasted...fine. No bitter aftertaste of pills, just regular French toast.
Miguel intensely observed you, even taking a seat beside you. For someone who truthfully claimed to not have laced your meal, he certainly doesn't make it appear that way. "Do you like it?" He asks nonchalantly. Not wanting to give him credit, you merely respond with an "it's alright,"
Finishing up your meal, you return to watching your show. Miguel gets up, sauntering out of the room. You assume he was returning work calls since he was taking off the week to nurse you back to health. You dismiss it, giving all your engagement to the television.
Sometime later, you hear heavy footfalls from the hallway. You don't turn to see who it is because it's obviously Miguel. Miguel once again enters the living room, your name falling from his lips immediately. You continue to pay him no mind at all.
Miguel is quickly agitated, "Look at me, (Name)." You whirl around, giving in. In Miguel's hands again is a tray. this time it holds neither drink nor food, instead medical supplies.
"No." You absentmindedly mutter, sinking farther into the couch cushion. Miguel approaches you, places the tray aside on the table, snatches the remote out of your hand, and powers off the television. "Come on, lie on your stomach." He commands softly, throwing blankets on the other couch to have the couch bare.
"No," you repeat like a petulant child whose mother asked them to do something they didn't want to do.
"Now, (Name). The faster we get this over, the faster you won't have to deal with it the remainder of the day."
He was right. For once. You shakily sigh, doing as he advised. Miguel takes your place on the couch, peeling your shirt upwards. The contact of cold crisp air against your warm skin makes you shiver. Never have been so interested in the armrest's design. Every stitch, color, and material now is intriguing.
Miguel prepares the ointments and bandages. Then he unwraps the aged bandages in slow motion, hoping not to foist pain on you. Over a couple of days, Miguel has attended to your wounds on your back, and each time the sight never fails to have his heart sink into his stomach.
Trailing from your upper back to your lower is three gashes on both sides of your back, parallel to claw marks. The gashes are deep and bloody despite the amount of medication he's applied days prior. Miguel figures they must have been caused by him clutching you when you went tumbling on the concrete.
Now it's Miguel's turn to take in a quivering breath.
Miguel brings over a small container holding a clear ointment inside. He dips his finger in, scooping out a good amount. Miguel's thick fingers gently glaze your marks, earning him a whine. As he continues, all that escapes his lips are gently spoken "m'sorry"s or "forgive me, bebé."s
You want to hate him. Never think of the word forgive in a sentence when it involves him. But you can't; all you can do is forgive him because it's the only thing you can do to improve your situation. A situation you'll never escape.
You have to forgive him, but never will you forget. Even if you wanted to, the marks on your back will always be a reminder.

Bucky's stomach is going. His chest too. She's coming over.
He's been cleaning all morning. Steve's been... gone. Ever since he left for his date. Bucky has his suspicions. It makes him even more anxious.
As much as he chirps the other guys, he agrees. He can't just sit around and wait for things to happen. That's what he's been doing. It took him this long just to have a conversation.
He told her to buzz up but the knock on the door startles him. He peeks through the peephole. She's in a cute lilac shirt with a leaf on it and her daisy-pattern gardening hat. She waves as if she can see through the door.
He slides the chain back and opens the door. She has a bucket with several handles hanging out of it.
"Morning, sunshine!" She chimes with a smile. She searches past him. "And kitty sunshine. Where she is."
"Morning," he returns dulcetly.
"Sorry. I woke up at four and I had like three teas! Then I was watching the birds. Oh, and I was excited to come see your flowers." She jitters. It's just plants, he thinks. He won't dim her light.
He saw her this morning. She was bopping around. He's pretty sure she was listening to music. He had his coffee and watched.
"I was going to offer you some tea but since you already had three..."
"No, I can do more! If you don't mind." She trills.
"Sure, I bought, uh, a thing," he goes to the cupboard. She takes her shoes off and leaves them on the mat before following. "Not too sure what kind you wanted. It has different ones."
She comes up next to him and stands close. She smells like cinnamon. She leans in and examines the box. "Can I have the apple, please and thanks."
"Sure, maybe I'll try some." He turns and flicks on the kettle. A big white splotch lands on the counter. Bucky sighs, "Al..."
"Hi, kitty!" She tweets and puts her hand out. "Aren't you so gorgeous?"
Alpine smells her fingers. "Careful," Bucky warns, "she bites..."
His voice trails off as the white shorthair pushes her head into Leaf's hand. He'd love to do the same thing. The thought of her playing with his hair, petting him, sitting in his lap. Back off, Bucky.
"Shoo, off the counter," he snaps his fingers at the cat.
She hops down. Leaf lets out a disappointed breath.
"Why don't you take her in the other room before she knocks over my toaster again," he says.
"Sure," she sings.
She makes noises to lure Alpine away and rubs her fingers together. He waits until he's sure she's gone. He checks over his shoulder then opens the cupboard. He takes down the little vial. He hesitates as he examines the powder. He crushed the tablets last night. Just in case...
It'll be easier than locking her in the back of a truck or breaking into her house. He uncaps it and pours it into the mug, placing a tea bag on top. He quickly shoves the vial away and watches the kettle. His fingers tap on the counter.
Just one step closer. This is it. I mean, is he that lame that those losers from that discord are further along than him?
He coughs as the kettle clicks. He pours the hot water into the mug. He lifts it and stirs the bag around. The powder dissolves. He puts the spoon in the sink and crosses the tile.
He peeks out into the front room. She's on the couch watching Alpine play with her weathered toy mouse. The squeaker stopped working ages ago but the cat still loves it.
"Here," he brings the cup to her and places it on a coaster on the end table. "It's hot."
"Oh, thanks. That's so sweet," she bounces on the couch. "You had her a long time?"
"Couple years. She was down in the alley hunting robins."
"Awwww. That's adorable. You saved her."
He nods. That's all he's doing. Saving her too.
"So the flowers?"
"Right," she stands up. "Can I bring the tea with me?"
"Sure, don't burn yourself," he says. He's sabotaging herself. No one wants cold tea.
She gets up and takes the cup. She blows over it. "Smells very apple-y."
"Great," he utters nervously.
He leads her out onto the balcony, holding the door for her. She steps out and peers across the gap between their buildings. "Oh, wow, you can see all my flowers from here."
"It's colourful," he says.
"Ha, yes," she agrees and turns to look at his planters. "Oh, some of these girlies need water."
"Right, uh, I'm new at this," he rubs his neck.
She sips the tea. She clears her throat and flinches. "That's strong. Black tea?"
"Must be," he shrugs.
"Hm, well, new things are fun," she says.
She cradles the cups as she looks over his assortment. "I love the shades you chose. We can put them into the planters easily. You got soil?"
"Oh, shoot, I must've missed that step," he says.
"Hmmm, okay, I might have some at my place." She turns and he stops her from putting the cup down.
"Finish the tea then you can run across. I'm in no rush." He insists.
She looks down. "Oh, sure, Wouldn't want it to go cold," she backs up and leans on the railing. "I... I was wondering. That clock in there. A cuckoo clock?"
"I'm trying to fix it." He says as he peeks back towards the apartment windows. "Client inherited it from an uncle or something."
"Wow, is that what you do? Fix things?"
"I try," he says.
She slurps again. Her cheeks pinch. Was it too much? Did he pour it all in? He didn't pay attention.
"I've sold a few plants. I go down and get the seedlings cheap. Raise them, sell em for a pretty bonus. Helps." She explains. "You mind if I sit?"
"Go ahead."
She lowers herself and look down at the alley. "It's so peaceful out here sometimes. I wish I got more sun. Maybe a nicer view. All I can see is brick."
"Right. Be nice to live somewhere far out, huh? In the country?"
"Yeah."
"Maybe a farm?" He prompts.
"Hm, a lot of work. Chickens and stuff. Lots of pests too."
He hums and follows her gaze to the alley. He stands at the door, blocking it. She sits and nurses the drink. She puts down the empty cup. She grumbles.
"Oh, I think... that was caffeinated," she bends over her lap and holds her head. "I'm getting a headache."
"I didn't realise. I shoulda read the box."
She makes another gurgle and her body goes slack. He rushes over before she can slip onto the balcony floor. He unfolds her and turns her over. She's breathing but out like a light. He pinches her cheek. She doesn't react.
He exhales. Well, he's gone this far.

Haii! Im here to bother u again😝😝😝😝😝 okay imagine this, Idia🤤 with a gothic reader who hates the outside world as much as Idia does, so they also attend school as a magical crow (Brian for once working🤭), okay basically it’s just a regular day, reader’s crow is listening to the alchemy lesson when the one day Idia pops up in class, someone in the class makes a potion explode and now Idia ´s a cat (uno reverse) so Idia runs to reader and reader in all their gothic calm amazing glory takes care of kitty Idia yayayayayayayayayyayayayayayayayayayyayayayayayyyayayayayaayyayayayayayayayayayayayayaayayayayayyaayayayyayay
The alchemy room buzzes with cauldrons boiling and students pretending to care. Perched high on a wooden beam, your glossy black feathers shimmer in the low candlelight. As a magical crow, you blend in with the shadows, watching the chaos below with passive disinterest. Grim often mutters about being replaced as NRC’s main animal companion—but he couldn’t match your gothic elegance if he tried.
You hated the outside world. Too loud, too bright, too peppy. So this crow form was your perfect out—quiet, hidden, detached from the expectations of socializing, and conveniently skipping the need for group projects. Professor Crewel let it slide, mostly because you always aced the theory work and also possibly because you once stared him down in your human form for too long without blinking.
But today was... different.
The door creaked open. Heads turned. You cocked your feathery head, mildly intrigued.
Idia Shroud had entered the classroom.
In the flesh.
Not via tablet. Not via hologram. Physically there.
He was hunched over, hoodie up, practically blending into the shadows like you usually did. Your feathers ruffled slightly. What was he doing here? Did he lose a bet?
But the answer would come sooner than expected.
Some half-witted alchemy student added powdered phoenix feather instead of fire salamander scale. There was a flash, a BANG, and then—
“MEOW??!”
The smoke cleared. The class gasped.
On the floor, where Idia had once stood, was now a fluffball of cursed adorableness.
A Selkirk Rex cat with messy, curly fur like a ball of smoke—tinted an ethereal indigo-blue and licked with ghostly flame along the tufts. His wide yellow eyes flicked around in horror, and his little kitty mouth opened to yowl—
But then he bolted.
Straight up the walls. Straight across beams.
Straight into you.
He barreled into your crow form like a flame-furred comet, and you flapped slightly in surprise before steadying. Idia—now a magical blue flame cat—clung to your side like his life depended on it.
A pause.
He blinked up at you with wide, panicked eyes.
You blinked back, slow and calm.
Then, still in your crow form, you gave a low, throaty caw of “sigh.” The universal goth noise of “I guess I’m handling this now.”
With eerie grace, you fluttered down to the floor and shifted back into your human form. The class gasped again, but you ignored them. All eyes were on you now—gothic robes trailing, heavy boots thudding, eyes lined with smudged black makeup, and an aura that screamed “don’t speak to me if you value your life.”
Cradling the trembling blue fire-fuzzball in your arms, you turned to Crewel.
“I’ll take responsibility for this one,” you intoned flatly.
Crewel blinked. Then sighed. “Very well. Just don’t let him set anything on fire.”
Back in your room...
The dorm was dark, curtains drawn, lit only by the soft hum of black flame candles and the flicker of your favorite haunted lamp. Gothic posters lined the walls. A bone-shaped incense holder smoldered faintly. It was quiet. Peaceful. Home.
On your lap, Idia curled into a ball of blue curls and gentle fire. He twitched his little whiskers as you brushed through his fur with a comb you conjured just for him. He hissed once—reflex—but then let out a begrudging purr.
“You make a surprisingly cute cat,” you said, voice dry, a rare smirk tugging at your lips.
He let out an offended meep and rolled onto his back, staring up at you with mortified golden eyes.
You raised an eyebrow. “Don’t worry. Your secret’s safe with me. I wouldn’t dare tell Ortho you made biscuits on my cloak earlier.”
The loudest cat groan echoed through the room.
Still, he stayed there. On your lap. Safe. Warm. Surrounded by darkness and someone who understood him—someone who hated the sun, crowds, and mornings just as much as he did.
For once in his life, Idia Shroud didn’t mind being around someone else.
Even if he was a cat for the time being.
You scratched under his flaming chin. He purred like a broken video game console.
The dorm room was still as shadowed and cozy as ever, lit only by dim lanterns and a flickering TV playing some obscure JRPG’s cutscene on mute. Incense swirled lazily in the air, curling around the edges of a spell circle chalked into the floor—half-finished, abandoned in favor of more important matters.
Like the sentient blue puffball curled in your lap.
You lounged lazily on your bed, black silk robe draped over your shoulders, heavy boots kicked off to the side. Idia—still a blue-flame Selkirk Rex—was stretched across your thighs like a spoiled little prince of darkness, his fiery fur faintly glowing against your monochrome aesthetic.
He’d been surprisingly docile, purring so hard at one point that your entire lap vibrated.
Of course, you had to take advantage of the moment.
Your black lipstick glinted faintly as you leaned down and kissed the top of his little flamey head.
“Smooch.”
He blinked. Then let out a soft, confused mrowl.
You kissed him again. Once between the ears. Once on his chubby cheek. Once near his twitchy little nose.
“Smooch. Smooch. Smooooch~”
Each kiss left a black lip-print on his blue-tinged fur. Like gothic seals of affection. Marks of adoration.
His tail started twitching wildly, like a meter slowly maxing out his embarrassment stat.
You tilted your head. “Aww. You’re all covered in love now, poor thing.”
Idia let out a muffled mrphhh, half-limp in your arms, half-melting from the attention and affection.
And then—
FWOOOSH!
A bright blue light engulfed him. Your arms instinctively tightened to hold him in place.
And when the light faded...
He was no longer a cat.
Idia Shroud—gangly limbs, hoodie, and all—was now awkwardly sprawled in your lap, blinking rapidly, entire body frozen in a crash-reboot of social anxiety.
...Covered in black lipstick marks.
One on his forehead. One just above his jawline. One on his neck. Several on his cheek. You counted seven in total from your perch beneath him.
And his hair—
It was pink. Flaming hot pink. A blushing bonfire, complete with flickering sparks of mortification.
“A-A-AH?! W-WHY—WHO—ME???”
His voice cracked hard enough to shatter your lamp. He scrambled but failed to escape, since your arms were still loosely wrapped around him.
You blinked up at him, calm as ever.
“You turned human again. While in my lap. After I covered you in kisses.” You dragged a finger up his cheek, smearing one of the lipstick prints like you were signing your name.
“That’s on you, babe.”
“B-BABE???!?!” he squeaked, voice hitting a pitch only dogs could hear. He clutched his hoodie drawstrings like they were a lifeline.
“Your fur was soft. You were cute. I was emotionally vulnerable,” you said deadpan. “So obviously I had to smother you in affection. That’s just what one does with magically cursed cats who panic and hide in their goth crush’s lap.”
“G-GOTH CRUSH—????! ERROR—!! STOP—!! BLUE SCREEN—!!”
He turned an even deeper shade of pink as you reached up and plucked another lipstick mark off his nose with your thumb.
“You’ll survive.” You smirked. “Unless you burst into flames. Which, judging by your hair, might actually happen.”
He buried his face in your shoulder with a pained wheeze. “I’m never showing my face in public again…”
You patted his back comfortingly. “Good. Neither do I.”

Will you write me a post-Fight Club fic? They’re bruised and beat up and I want to read about it.
Kersh had said Sweet fancy Moses when he saw their injuries and ordered them either home or desk bound until such time as they would not terrify small children with their countenances.
***
Scully slouched against the wall with an ice pack on her face. She did not want to be here, but she didn’t want to be anywhere else either. People stared and she hated it more than she hated paperwork. She had practically worn a groove in her apartment floor from caged pacing.
Mulder was using a tape dispenser to grind Excedrin tablets into a powder. He rubbed it on the insides of his swollen lips like cocaine.
“Ow,” he observed. He didn’t get the fun medications until he went home, which he didn’t wish to do because it was boring. He carried his injuries with a certain swagger.
“I thought Mr. Saperstein was going to show you some in-your-face, smack-down moves so you could quit getting your ass kicked so often,” Scully said.
Mulder scowled at her. He grabbed a pad of paper from the desk and wrote YOU’RE LOOKING PRETTY ROUGH YOURSELF XENA. He tapped at it until she looked up.
“The Lorax is coming for you, Mulder,” she warned.
He was finding it difficult to talk clearly with a wired jaw but, because he found it impossible to refrain from making smart remarks, he was on his third legal pad.
WELL EXCUSE ME BUT I WASN’T EXPECTING TO HAVE TO EITHER TAKE A CANE TO THE JAW OR PUNCH AN OLD LADY
He added a frowny face and several exclamation points to emphasize the complexity of the situation.
Scully examined her reflection in the back of a spoon. Either Lulu or Betty - Scully couldn’t remember which thanks to the concussion - had launched herself off the ropes and onto Scully. She had led with her forehead.
“Burt Zupanic,” she mused, readjusting the ice. “Of all the men to fight over.”
SWEET-ASS PERM, Mulder noted, unhelpfully.
She laughed, which hurt. Most things hurt at present, her pride included. She’d already had three cups of coffee this morning, but after surviving all her various maimings, Scully was confident her organs could handle it. She emptied the pot into her Stanford mug.
Mulder tapped her arm. HEY I AM ORDERING SOME CLAM CHOWDER FOR LUNCH. DO YOU WANT ANYTHING?
“Clam chowder through a straw, ugh, Mulder. Besides, you’re not supposed to have anything with chunks in it.”
THEY ARE BLENDING IT UP FOR ME. MILKSHAKE OF THE SEA.
She gagged a little. “That’s vile.”
PROBABLY. IF THEY MAKE ANOTHER MOVIE ABOUT US I THINK WE SHOULD NOT MENTION THIS PARTICULAR INCIDENT.
As though he actual movie had been so much better. She cringed every time she thought about it. At least the COPS episode conveyed her reluctance and irritation. “Pinky swear.”
He held his own finger out and she hooked hers around it.
THE PACT IS SEALED
“Hey Mulder?”
“Hmmm?”
“Do you want to get the hell out of here, go take some of the really good painkillers, curl up in my bed in our underwear, and watch bad Lifetime movies until we pass out? I don’t have chowder but there’s leftover tomato bisque with your name on it.”
FUCK THE CHOWDER LET’S ROLL
They were out the door before the ink dried.

Coffee Talk
Platonic Hange x Reader | Canon Timeline | ~800 words
“They call it coffee. It’s like black tea but they use ground up beans for it. The plants they are from couldn’t even grow here because the weather is so different! Can you believe that? There are places out there where it’s always hot and where they have totally different plants!” Hange waved the package of the dark, strong smelling powder in front of your face. It had been confiscated from the captured Marleryan ships along with other goods that nobody on Paradis had ever seen or tasted before. “Can you get me the microscope ready? I’m gonna try to make us some of that to drink and then we can have a look at the powder and fluid close up.”
“Sure.” You put down the documents you were currently sorting, watching as Hange was already out of the door, a faint “You’re the best!” echoing from the hallway through the door they forgot to close in a hurry. Normally you’d suppress a sigh at that, but there was no normal any more since the Battle for Shinganshina. Hange hadn’t talked about it much ever since they returned, aside from stiffly formulated official reports and parts of the speech as they were sworn in as the new Commander of the Scouts.
The lab had become eerily clean and ordered since there was noone around to conduct eccentric experiments and make a mess. It barely looked like the work environment you had become so used to. On top of that the specimens and illustrations of Titan-related research slowly but surely migrated to a shelf in the corner, replaced by plans and documentation of Marleryan inventions and science. Most of it weapons, though you made a point to keep extra stuff on those steam powered transportation devices the Marleryans called trains. That had been one of the things Hange had allowed themselves to be excited about.
After some time reminiscing, you got up, closed the door properly and put away the documents into the neatly ordered folders where they belonged. Your hands itched to go around and clean up something, double check the notes taken that day, to do anything but having to stand around and wait. But there was nothing left to do, making you even more aware of everything that had been lost. Your introspective standing in place and staring was soon interrupted by the door handle creaking a little when being pushed down, then screeching as it went up, back down and up again as someone was obviously struggling with opening the door. Was Hange already back? Or maybe making that coffee didn’t take that long? Either way, you opened the door.
“Careful, careful.” Hange’s brows were furrowed in concentration as they carefully side-stepped past you, balancing a tablet with a tea pot and several cups filled to the rim with different shades of dark brown-ish fluid, strategically stacked next to each other. The smell was intense and very different from the kinds of tea you knew.
“Sooo-“ They stretched the sound until being close enough to set down the tray. You heard the clinking of the cups against each other, trying to look over Hange’s shoulder to try and see better as Hange was moving left and right, lining up the cups in a neat row. “I figured if I didn’t know how to make this, we could just figure it out together. A little experiment.”
You smiled. It was hard not to when Hange was this genuinely excited, when you knew they had a plan and that this plan involved throwing things together that might or might not mix. A calculated game of chance. Just how much you’d missed this. Hanges bright smile as they held a cup of pure coffee a little too close to your face.
“It should be cold enough to drink now. What do you think about the smell?” Hange asked. “Really strong. Not like black tea. More… condensed.” You chose your words carefully, choosing them with a precision that you knew Hange could make work best in their carefully crafted network of references based on others observations. Carefully you took the cup from them, eyeing the drink. “But also bitter. Really bitter.”
Hange got out their writing utensils, scribbling down some words you’d have to decipher later. Not that you minded. They had fun. Hell, you had fun. That was research for you, a serious investigation and a talk with a friend.
“So, tell me more about that.” Hange’s glasses reflected the laboratory light in a short glint as they looked up at you again. No matter how precise you were, they would always ask. And you’d have something more to say.
A/N: I'm just dropping this here and fading into obscurity again till the next time

Burning Frankincense! I just learned how to, let me show you!
Tumblr media
(dime for scale)
Like most people who burn good smelling stuff in their spiritual practice, I've used mostly incense sticks and cones because those are the cheapest and easiest to find in your local general store. But I recently went into a shop specifically for aromas, and the shop lady showed me how to burn these frankincense resin pellets!
Some of us might be familiar with charcoal tablets to burn herbs, but you can also use charcoal for resins, and even loose powdered incense. Though, if you're in the broom closet, new to witchcraft, or on a budget, you might not be aware this is what you can do with charcoal. Charcoal is great for any loose material you want to burn, not just resin.
Keep in mind, the charcoal keeps itself lit and makes a lot of CO2, so make sure you're not doing this around pets and people with sensitive lungs. ALWAYS make sure you're in a well ventilated area and keep your fire prevention tools in reach. NEVER burn charcoal in a container that can't handle heat like ceramics or plastics, and do not handle a metal container while it is lit, as charcoal makes a lot of heat and keeps it for a long time. If you have a cast-iron cauldron, this is better suited for it, but you need sand or used ash around the charcoal as a anti-fire barrier. I would not recommend doing this indoors if you can help it.
Tumblr media
This was not lit so that I could take a photo, but you should have more sand around the charcoal. But once you have it set up and lit the charcoal, you just place your item of choice on the charcoal, and it will ignite. Resin lights fast and will make a lot of smoke, so if you're just doing something small, chipping a piece off the charcoal and using just a bit of your item works best, otherwise the whole thing will keep going and you might set off a fire/CO2 detector somewhere. Lastly, if you get a headache, smother whatever you're burning and get fresh air.
I figured I'd post about my recent discovery here for y'all, since I don't see many posts on how to use things like charcoal, and most people use sticks not resin. Hope this was helpful!

Introduction to TCCA for Water Disinfection
Trichloroisocyanuric Acid (TCCA) is a powerful compound widely used for treating and disinfecting water. Its stability, ease of use, and ability to release chlorine over time make it a preferred option for keeping water safe, clean, and free from pathogens in various settings. Whether it’s in swimming pools, drinking water supplies, or industrial cooling systems, TCCA consistently provides reliable disinfection.
What is TCCA and How Does It Work?
TCCA is an organic chlorine compound that belongs to the isocyanurate family. With a high available chlorine content of around 90%, TCCA acts as a potent oxidizing agent. When dissolved in water, it releases hypochlorous acid (HOCl)—the key active disinfectant that destroys bacteria, viruses, algae, and other harmful microorganisms.
The way TCCA reacts with water can be summed up like this:
C3Cl3N3O3 + H2O → HOCl + by-products
This reaction not only ensures rapid pathogen inactivation but also maintains residual chlorine levels for prolonged protection, making TCCA an ideal candidate for ongoing disinfection requirements.
Advantages of Using TCCA for Water Disinfection
1. High Chlorine Content
TCCA boasts one of the highest concentrations of available chlorine among commonly used disinfectants. This means less product is needed to achieve effective microbial control, resulting in cost-efficiency and ease of handling.
2. Long-Lasting Effectiveness
Unlike sodium hypochlorite or calcium hypochlorite, TCCA takes its time to dissolve, which means it releases chlorine gradually. This slow and steady action helps keep your water sanitized for a longer period, so you won’t have to worry about dosing it as often.
3. Versatility Across Applications
TCCA is used in a variety of water treatment situations, such as keeping swimming pools clean and clear.
Swimming pools – to maintain hygiene and clarity
Municipal water treatment – ensuring drinking water safety
Cooling towers – preventing biofilm formation
Wastewater treatment plants – reducing microbial load
Food processing facilities – sanitizing water used in production
4. Compact and Easy to Store
TCCA comes in tablet, granule, and powder forms, which makes it super convenient to handle and store. Its non-volatile characteristics and low flammability make it a safer option for storage and transport compared to other chlorine sources.
5. Stable and Long Shelf Life
TCCA remains stable under standard storage conditions and does not degrade easily, maintaining its efficacy over time. This is especially advantageous in remote or large-scale disinfection setups where storage longevity is crucial.
How TCCA Ensures Water Safety
Broad-Spectrum Disinfection
TCCA is highly effective against a variety of microorganisms, such as E. coli, Salmonella, Legionella, and Norovirus. Its ability to quickly inactivate microbes makes it an essential tool in situations where preventing waterborne diseases is crucial.
Residual Protection
One of the key benefits of TCCA is its ability to leave a chlorine residual in the water. This acts as a barrier against future contamination, ensuring continued water safety even after initial treatment.
pH Stability
TCCA functions optimally in the pH range of 5.5 to 7.5, which is typically aligned with most water treatment requirements. It does not cause drastic fluctuations in pH, thereby maintaining the chemical balance of the water and preventing corrosion or scaling.
Algae and Biofilm Control
TCCA is a powerful oxidizer that effectively eliminates algae spores and disrupts biofilm formation, which can lead to clogged pipelines and decreased efficiency in water systems. This makes it particularly useful in cooling systems and large bodies of water.
Comparing TCCA with Other Disinfectants

From the comparison, it’s evident that TCCA offers an optimal blend of high chlorine content, long-lasting action, and convenience, making it the superior choice in many disinfection scenarios.
Safe Handling and Usage Guidelines
While TCCA is quite powerful, it is critical to approach it with caution. Here are some important safety tips to remember.
Store in a cool, dry, and ventilated area, away from organic materials.
Use PPE (personal protective equipment) such as gloves and masks during handling.
Do not mix with acids or other disinfectants, as this can lead to dangerous reactions.
Make sure to stick to the manufacturer’s dosing guidelines to prevent any issues with over-chlorination or chemical imbalances.
Environmental Considerations
TCCA breaks down into cyanuric acid, which, in moderate concentrations, is not harmful and actually helps stabilize chlorine in outdoor applications by preventing degradation from UV rays. However, accumulated cyanuric acid levels should be monitored in closed systems like pools, as excessive levels can reduce chlorine efficacy.
To mitigate this, regular partial water replacement and monitoring cyanuric acid concentrations are recommended, ensuring both effectiveness and environmental safety.
Why Choose TCCA for Disinfection Needs
Proven effectiveness against a wide array of pathogens
Cost savings through reduced chemical usage
Ease of application and maintenance
Long shelf life and stable storage characteristics
When it comes to commercial, industrial, and municipal applications, this is the go-to choice for many.
By choosing TCCA, water treatment facilities and end users gain peace of mind, knowing their water systems are protected by a reliable and high-performance disinfectant.
Conclusion
TCCA stands out as a powerful, reliable, and cost-effective solution for water disinfection. Its ability to deliver consistent chlorine release, coupled with broad-spectrum antimicrobial efficacy and long-term residual protection, makes it the preferred choice for modern water treatment. Whether you are managing a public swimming pool or operating an industrial water system, TCCA offers the versatility, safety, and efficiency needed to meet rigorous water quality standards.

For Hazel:
Are a lot of the Office archives on paper? Are things getting digitalized? Do you ever come across something that could be classified as a cognitohazard while browsing the stacks? If so, how's that dealt with?
Oh that's a great question!
Yes, a lot of what Miss Cece has tucked away in the Archives are on paper or on some other form of media, clay tablets, scrawled piece of wallpaper, locked up grimoires. But we are slowly making progress on digitizing things! It makes it SO much easier when people outside of the Archival office need to borrow things.. It's one of the things I'm helping Miss Cece with. She's really good at organizing.. but sometimes technology flies right over her head.
Yes, we do have cognitohazards in the stacks. We keep them locked up based on cognitohazard rating. Office personnel can apply to see them for study if they want, but usually Miss Cece has to handle those since I'm not rated for anything but Class 2. Cool fact: it's way easier to scramble the cognitohazards out of digital formats than analog!
The last time I found an uncatalogued cognitohazard in the stacks I had to take off sick for a week because I kept tasting the color blue....
What did it taste like?
Like powdered sugar on sandpaper.

Need assistance identifying objects
I was cleaning my room, and found a box of weird assorted items. Some are labelled, others aren't.
Tumblr media
First is this - a vial labelled Malachite Green. I assume it's a dye of some kind, although I can't make out the cursive text below it. I can read "?? tablet ?? oil ??"
Tumblr media
There's this box full of very fine grey ash - not sure if it's clear in the photo, but the top side has a magnifying lens built into it. The bottom side makes it clear what it is, however:
Tumblr media
I then have an assortment of teeth
Tumblr media
I don't know what animal they once belonged to, so any input from teeth experts would be appreciated!
Tumblr media
I have this, what appears to be a very old coin or medal of some kind (I'm leaning towards medal - see the hole at the top). It clearly has some text on it, but I can't read any of it.
Tumblr media
Here's the other side of the medal thingy.
Tumblr media
It's pretty clear what this one is - a five shilling coin, dated 1953
Tumblr media
Finally there's this, which is probably impossible to identify. It does not show up well on camera, but it's a bright red powder, with a metallic sparkle to it. It appears to have leaked and stained the inside of the box I found these items in:
Tumblr media
the red stains on other items are whatever this is. I assume it's another dye, although it has no label at all. I don't wish to open it, as simply handling it stained my fingertips red, and it doesn't come off in soapy water.
If you can help identify any of these, I'd love to know what they are - I'm very curious! If you know anyone who might be able to help, please share this with them. Thank you!
