I have a feeling that beneath the little halo on your noble head There lies a thought or two the devil might be interested to know You're like the finish of a novel that I'll finally have to take to bed You fascinate me so

How about in 2024 we stop it with reading books with the goal in mind to finish the book so you can add it to your list of read books and start reading books slowly and intentionally with the goal to rip it into pieces with your mind and be touched by it and formed by it and changed by it

lighthearted.
if this comic resonated with you, please consider donating to this palestinian escape fund (vetted by @/nabulsi and @/el-shab-hussein) as it is less than $7,000 away from it's goal.
i turn 24 today. To celebrate, I made this comic to be a spiritual successor to lead balloon, a comic in which I talked about the darkest period of my life so far.
A lot has changed since my 23rd birthday and this one. My priorities have shifted a lot, in ways that I think are mostly good. But i think the best part about today is that suicide has gone back to being a far away notion. I'm really lucky, and I'm grateful for that.

BOOKS READ JANUARY 2024
The Trust by M.H. Eccleston It had some more fleshed out characters than a lot of cozies and I will read more in the series. The murder and the reason for getting involved was weak but you can’t have everything. A few clichés and such but. It was alright 3 out of 5 for me.
The Christmas Tree Murders by Andrea Hicks The cover looks great. A fabulous lady ready to drink, dance and solved a murder while looking fantastic. It was dull and poorly written, multiple POVs and I didn’t like anyone. Forgot what era this was supposed to be (hint 1920’s) and thought it was Victorian. Read a little like an early draft. 2 out of 5.
The Poisonous Solicitor by Stephen Bates Read as part of my research as I want to write a cozy set in the 1920’s England. A nice read, made plenty of notes. 3 out of 5.
The Man in the Queue by Josephine Tey I loved the idea of someone getting murdered in a tight packed queue, loved it. The rest of the book? Not so much… someone told me that Josephine Teys stand-alones are better so I’ll give one of those as try. There were some racism in it as well. 3 out of 5 because of the idea of a murder in the queue.
Murder in the Library by Anita Davison A netgalley read. I had read the first book in the series and was as dull as this. There are so many cozies like this. So flat and dull, like trying to get a decent cup of tea by reusing and old teabag and hot water from the tap. I should start avoiding books that look like this (so many) as they are always so bland. 2 out of 5 for me.
Murder in a Chelsea Garden L.B. Hathaway Started out alright but this series is so gloomy and I don’t recall it started out that way. It’s kind of sad and I want more of a flapper having fun and stumbling across a body as a house party. More fun and flair. 2.5 out of 5.
The Queen of Poison by Robert Thorogood Was looking forward to this as I enjoyed the earlier books in the series and the Death in Paradise books but… felt like painting by numbers and the 3 MCs didn’t really have the space they have had in the other books. But for some reason I gave it 3.5 out of 5
Rex v. Edith Thompson by Laura Thompson This was a mess. The author took liberties and was very bias and used 10 words instead of 4. We read the same letters and the author was drawing a lot of stuff out of them than was more like magic to me. Ugh. 2 out of 5.
Elementary, She Read by Vicki Delany I thought this book was old as someone made a faux Sherlock again but it was from 2017. I realized just how tired I am of this kind of character and how hard they are to make likable. Also a Sherlock mind when needed and stupid when needed. 2 out of 5.
The Adventures of Maud West by Susannah Stapleton I loved the beginning of this because I went to Trove because I wanted to see if I could find a female detective in the 1920’s and I found Maud and looked for a book about her. The book starts with the author doing just what I did and finding the same stuff, except for the book so she wrote one. Thanks! 4 out of 5.
Murder in Venice by Martha Bond Very short and very flat. See how similar the cover is with “Murder in the Library”? Dishwater tea. Only good thing was that the MC was not a rich bored society woman but a traveling companion. 2 out of 5.
A Taste for Poison by Neill Bradbury A good glance at an interesting topic as I want to write a cozy. Didn’t go too deep so you’re lost if you’re like me and didn’t dumb it down either. 3 out of 5.
BEST BOOK: The Adventures of Maud West. A lot of fun things and there’s a thing in the book that I will steal for my cozy (but in the notes I will credit Maud for it)
WORST BOOK: The Christmas Tree Murders were probably the worst written one. Really disappointed in Rex V. Edith Thompson as it was more fiction than fact.
CONCLUSIONS: I say I will avoid books with a certain cover but I won’t. Maybe I should try some other genres and break things up a little in February?

Friendly reminder that if you talk about how representation is important and how there's not enough diverse media, I implore you to seek out the media that already exists. And if you live in an area with a public library, go to see if they're available at your public library. And then go check them out.
As a librarian, it is demoralizing to see how low the circulation statistics are on lgbt+ books and books by BIPOC authors. I include them in displays and readers advisory, but people still don't check them out as much. Libraries only have a finite amount of resources, including space. We don't get a book then keep it forever. If not enough people check it out, we have to get rid of it to make room for more books. And when James Patterson Book #69 gets checked out 30 times in one year and cool, subversive Sci fi novel with a Black trans woman main character has never been checked out once, the librarian (me) has to make a hard decision.
If you're looking for something tangible and easy to do this pride month, look for lgbt+ books (there are millions of lists online that you can find. It's easier than it's ever been to find diverse books) and check them out from your library.
No time to read? Look for a short story or poetry anthology and just read as much as you have time for. Or just check out a book cus it looks interesting and read as much as you can. We have movies too.
As cool as it would be for me to just keep the books I want and get rid of the ones I don't, I have to listen to the community on matters of collection development. And the community tells me what books they want by checking them out and leaving the ones they don't want on the shelf.
If you think this doesn't apply to you because you live in a progressive area and obviously the books are being checked out, you're wrong. I once worked in a community with a large lgbt population. Those books were not getting checked out. If you want to tell me you live in a conservative area and your library doesn't have any diverse books, you are legally obligated to check the catalog before replying to this post. I currently work in a conservative community and we have lgbt+ and bipoc books. And if you still cannot find any, you are legally obligated to see if your library has a collection request form that patrons can fill out before replying to this post.
