Hullo! I think I’ve stumbled upon another Akechi-ism that’s really difficult to understand. In E376_001, Akechi gives a little monologue about why he’s okay with working with the Phantom Thieves.

In the localization, he says “Because of sickening human beings… My contempt for such people drives my sense of justice.” I *think* he’s saying something more like “Because of shitty adults / because of a shitty adult… My rebellion against them / that person is where my justice comes from,” and this is one of those double meaning lines where he’s subtly referencing Shido, but I’m no where near proficient in Japanese enough to say for sure.

Hi, anon! You are correct, of course. Sadly, this is a very frequent flaw in the localisation: translating without regard for context, so that references to the plot are obscured.

Sometimes it's so bad that we lose concord even between question and answer, as here with the SIU Director and Sae on 10/26:

SIU Director ああ、そうだ。不測の事態が起��たら、すぐ私に連絡を。 aa, sou da. fusoku no jitai ga okitara, sugu watashi ni renraku o Oh, one more thing. If the unexpected happens to occur, contact me immediately. Sae 部長に…? buchou ni...? ...To you, sir?

"watashi ni" / "buchou ni". In English, "to me" / "to [you] the department head". It's an elegant little call-and-response. But in English, we simply don't reply to "please contact me" with "to you". That is an unthinkingly literal, even mechanical, translation of buchou ni. It should have been impossible to translate that so badly, assuming you could see both of those lines next to each other, and had a fluent command of English.

The translator (or even translators, plural) here have also missed that fusoku no jitai is a set phrase, and simply means a contingency: "If anything should come up, get in touch with me immediately." Instead, we get the overly-evil construction "if the unexpected happens to occur", which ought to have put Sae on guard at once.

These mistranslated set phrases are another type of error that comes up over and over... and over, and over, and over. It's extremely easy to do when you're in a hurry, when you're short-staffed and overworked and on a deadline; I certainly do it all the time. But I'm not a professional, and nobody is paying money for my silly posts. P5 deserved better, and Atlus should have provided it.

a much more forgivable error

Now that I've got that one out of my hair, let's take a look at this exchange with Akechi.

Akechi サイテーな大人⋯ saiteina otona... Because of sickening adults... [lit. because of (EITHER) a sickening adult (OR) sickening adults...] Akechi そうだね。そいつへの反骨心が僕の正義の源だ。 sou da ne. soitsu e no hankotsushin ga boku no seigi no minamoto Yes. My contempt for such people drives my sense of justice. [lit. it's true. the source of my justice is my spirit of rebellion towards [him].] Akechi 社会の為とか、理想の為とか、そんな大層な理由じゃない。 shakai no tame to ka, risou no tame to ka, sonna taisouna riyuu ja nai It isn't some grand reason like society's sake or some lofty ideal. [lit. it's not some overblown reason like [doing it] for society or for [my] ideals.] Akechi 極めて個人的で⋯ただのくだらない恨みだ。 kiwamete kojinteki de... tada no kudaranai urami da It's simply an absurd grudge… and extremely personal. [lit. it's extremely personal... and nothing but a stupid grudge.]

Let's take a look at this short little speech of Akechi's. It's important, not just for what he says, but for the fact that he answers Haru's question completely honestly. Because there's a tension throughout the whole Sae's Palace arc, between what Akechi is saying—which is largely true and often seems heartfelt—and his motives for saying it all.

Is he just using the truth, to ingratiate himself with the Thieves? Or does part of him wish it could all be real? Does part of him, perhaps, feel an obligation to tell Haru the truth? I think he's more genuine than he intends, despite "the same strategy used in romance"; IMO the engine room makes it very clear. But you decide.

soitsu e no hankotsushin ga boku no seigi no minamoto

Literally, "the source of my justice is my spirit of rebellion towards him". Come on, this is a great line. First of all, it absolutely captures the Phantom Thieves, demonstrating that Akechi truly is one of them; even if he means it to be ingratiating, it's still true. As ever, Akechi is a lower-case phantom thief, even if he comes and goes over whether he's truly one of the team.

Second, 源 minamoto is a lovely word. It literally means the source of a river, the same way the verb "spring" in English is linked to springs of water.

Lastly, he uses this word 反骨心 hankotsushin, literally "rebellious spirit"—though it's not the phrase P5 usually translates as "spirit of rebellion"; that's 反逆の意志 hangyaku no ishi, literally "will of rebellion". In fact, it's much more often translated as that; "spirit of rebellion" and "will of rebellion" are the same exact thing.

What is a hankotsushin, exactly? According to word-dictionary.jp, it's not just any rebellion, but rebellion against those with power or authority, driven by taking action to reform them. "A true hankotsushin is always accompanied by a sense of justice and strong convictions."

That tells us a lot about Akechi, huh? Does he have a true sense of justice?—well, yes, in case the fact that he is legit the Justice confidant wasn't enough for you. Is he driven by an urge to put things right, or by nothing but hate?—well, as he says at the very end ("End his crimes in my place!"), he doesn't just want to hurt Shido, but to stop him. Even if a new monster will inevitably spring back up.

But the other thing about Akechi is how much he deceives himself, as well as others. Does he just see himself as having a hankotsushin? Would others necessarily agree? The PTs don't seem to, when he protests in the engine room that "[his] targets were all doing the same damn thing".

Either way, I do think this wording is telling.

risou no tame to ka

This seems like a very ordinary line, but it bears mentioning that 理想 risou, "ideal" or "ideals", while common, is a word Shido uses quite often: "To bring about my ideals, the weak must be eliminated...". Apart from this once, Akechi only otherwise uses it when discussing Maruki in the third semester.

sonna taisouna riyuu ja nai

Literally, "it's not some overblown reason". "lofty", I think, misses the nuance here; 大層 taisou does mean "great", but it carries a sense that whatever it is is exaggerated. Not lofty, exactly, but overinflated, even self-important.

Is it strange that Akechi, as the Detective Prince, should say that saving society or high moral ideals are just self-importance? Not really. He comes out with a number of things like this—just watch his studio event with Ren. His analysis of society is quite acute, and he makes no secret of his disdain for e.g. adults and the police:

It's this same old question, right from the start. Does Akechi mean what he says here? Or is he simply saying things the leader of the PTs might want to hear? Again, you decide. tada no kudaranai urami da

Literally, "it's just a stupid grudge". But this 恨み urami, "grudge", is one of Akechi's key words. He'll use it again in the engine room ("I resented him, but he was already a high-ranking official by then")—and so will Futaba: "one for your lies, and one for your hate".

Futaba, of course, is essentially saying "one for your revenge" here—that Loki grew out of Akechi's obsession with revenge. "Hate" does not quite sum it up. urami, interestingly, is also the word Futaba uses for Wakaba's complaints about her: "her grudges towards me..."

It's certainly a very versatile word. Incidentally, you might notice that this sentence has been reversed; that's quite common, because Japanese is back-weighted (SOV, subject-object-verb, with the verb at the end of the sentence) whereas English is front-weighted (SVO, subject-verb-object, with the verb typically in the middle of the sentence). So sentences like this are often reversed, to keep the impact in the right place.

one sickening adult or two?

Now, to finally answer your question: IMO Akechi's language here is not actually ambiguous. Let's look at it again:

First of all, as you originally highlighted, Akechi uses the word 大人 otona ("adult") rather than e.g. 人間 ningen ("human being"). 最低 saitei, with its "most-" prefix 最 sai, means that something is the very lowest, or the very worst. "vile adults", "despicable adults".

(Ryuji's "shitty adults", by the way, is kusona otona, literally "shitty adults", and is not something Akechi would ordinarily say.)

Adults, plural? Sure. Because, if you look only at the first line here, it could be a bit of deliberate vagueness—a common trick in Japanese writing. That otona could be either "adult" or "adults"; there's no way to tell, and it might even be misleading....

Until we get some additional context. Which the very next line gives us, with that soitsu e, "towards that person".

soitsu is, almost always, singular. "that person", or "that guy". It's very often pejorative, "that asshole"—though not always; it can be neutral, and in some Bible translations God is even soitsu. It has a plural, soitsura—though that is more specific than the translator seems to have thought Akechi was being, I don't think that a generic crowd of vile adults would have called for a soitsu pronoun.

No, Akechi is talking about someone specific here. He is talking about one person. He's telling us that he is talking about one person, with soitsu. And we know exactly who he's talking about—unlike the poor translator, who was denied either the tools or the time to check.

He is not being subtle at all! The only thing he doesn't do here is name Shido! To be clear: if this had been a deliberate misleading, if Akechi had been hiding his true feelings beneath a cloud of vagueness, then "sickening adults" would still have been a poor translation. Because that trick that allows you to be vague does not exist in English. The only context-accurate translation of Akechi's line is the singular: "a sickening adult".

Now, if Akechi had been deliberately vague, then "sickening adults" would have been a possible translation. But Akechi wasn't vague. Once again, the localisation has made him vague, when he was originally confessing to Haru in very precise terms.

hello there, im finally able to send my summer recs!!

One of my favorite fics in the mdzs fandom, and my favorite work in progress at the moment, missing only four chapters until it's concluded, and has weekly updates. It's a masterpiece, from the writing style, characterization, worldbuilding and plot. The author makes it seem like something that could have been written by mxtx herself, while giving their own skills the recognition it deserves.

At the beginning of the story we get to see Wei Wuxian's life, position and responsibilities in the Jiang Sect not only in the complicated and emotionally charged Jiang main family, but also showing how he interacts with the others members of the sect, how he is a good Head Disciple who is good at his job. How he interacted with the Lan and Nie delegations is a delight, not only because his interactions with Lan Wangji are the cutest, but because it also shows how political aware and competent he is, even if not a mastermind of a politics.

Everything is so masterfully done that it could easily be the path that the characters lives could have taken in canon, with how the characterization is faithfully done. The canon material is explored to the most subtle of details, and we can see the characters, the sects, cultivation and their society growing into their flaws and virtues with all the self-indulgence of fanfic and all the character of canon. - Anon

plots or memes: both? i'm typically more of a " let's see what happens! " type of writer because i think there's a level of excitement that comes from not knowing what your partner will say next, but i also LOVE talking about our muses and the things we could see happening between them. i've found myself plotting a lot more recently due to my mutuals' preferences, and it's been a total blast!! i just typically go off vibes like a freak! LMAO i just love that feeling of OMG??? when i get a reply. and, of course, receiving random starters is like a drug to me. like damn, you were that eager? count me in!

long or short replies: ah! well, i always feel rude if i think i've written too little. it's hard for me to do one sentence starters unless i'm sending in a meme! i think i tend to stay in the mid-to-long reply range. not quite novella, but not a single sentence.

best time to write: i have no regular time in which i write, i'm afraid. it's kinda like a slasher film: i never know when the writing bug will strike! i find that the world is far more quiet at night / in the wee hours of the day, and considering i sleep like a vampire most of the time, you'll often catch me writing then! however, it really depends on when i'm available on a given day!

are you like your muse(s): i never have the chance to write her, but i've been told i'm just like annie edison since 2009, so that has to mean something. it probably isn't a good thing, but it's been fairly consistent! tohru honda was my biggest inspiration growing up, so i think there may be a glimmer of me somewhere in there, and uhhhhhhh let's see... OH! Of my marvel muses, i'm probably most like mantis bc i've been told so at work!

Hi, I associate this blog with a safe space, and I have a need to talk about receving a comment on my fic, you are such a kind person and I guess I need a pick me up of sorts after this (so sorry for spamming your inbox, just .. yeah)

So, it's a lestappen long fic, the longest thing I've ever written and it takes so much time and effort, and I know the most important thing is to write for/me/, but I like feedback, I love when people notice details and tell me what they liked or what was interesting ect, I like questions when someone is curious about what happened and why, where the story is going

What I don't appriciate is a comment that says smth along the lines of "I like your fic but absolutely HATE how Max is in that fic, he's so stupid, why does he act like that, Charles should be with someone else, why max's friends even bother with him, he's boring and I would stop reading the fic if there was only his pov and not other characters"

And I was like, dude, if you don't like it, if it frustrates you so much, go and read smth else! it was like this person missed the whole point of the characterisation and what Max had went through in the fic. And why this person even thought to write it like that? They can feel however they want, I read books when I was frustrated with the main character actions or I had trouble empathising with them but I never thought to write that to the authors face! It was like someone was giving me a compliment on everything else but not the main focus of the story. How the hell am I suppose to interpret that? "Oh, it's great but change everything about the main character becuase he's annoying to me"

It's just so discouraging sometimes. Especially because I tag everything and I always try to make characters motivation belivable so yeah...

And it's so stupid because that person comments on every chapter since the beginning and it was always nice and now like 4 comments about how they don't get how anyone could like Max in that fic lol

It isn't the first time this happened, on my other fic there was a comment similar to that to like "oh, the actions of the main character made me not enjoy the fic, he was bla bla bla and it was a dealbreaker for me" ok, then don't leave kudos and don't freaking comment! I tagged everything, I tagged the conflict, if I wrote it like you wanted there would be no fic because there would be no plot! If you want a character writen a certain way do it yourself! Ugh

Sorry for the long rant, I had to get this off my chest somewhere and I don't anyone to vent to about fanfics.

I’m glad you felt able to send this ask and there is absolutely no need to apologise for ranting about this. I completely understand your frustration. Always feel free to come and vent here. 

I know that we all say that the most important thing to do is write for yourself but I also one hundred percent agree with you that given the amount of time and effort we put in it is only natural to want some engagement. It’s always fun when people pick up on little things you add into a fic or enjoy it so much they want to discuss it further. Seeing a nice comment on a fic is an amazing thing for an author. 

Sorry that you’ve received a comment like that. Its clear they love a lot about your writing otherwise they wouldn’t be reading the story so its so odd that they would want to focus on a negative. I am the same as you, there have been characterisations I don’t like but I know that that is just a personal preference so I don’t feel the need to put that on the author. I think the process of writing and reading and sharing fanfics is all about joy, even when the topics are dark. Its about someone spending the time crafting something and putting it out there for free for others to enjoy. I don’t think its ever the place to leave negative comments. 

I really hope that this doesn’t discourage you. I think some people get very clear ideas in their heads about what they expect a character to do and what they want to happen and then don’t like it when that character acts differently than they expect. Especially when it comes to real people. It sounds like you like to craft more complex characterisations which is what people are like in the real world, people have aspects of them that can be difficult to understand at first. I think thats a really interesting thing to try and get to grips with in fics. It might not make all the characters easily accessible but it adds depth to the story and gives them room to grow. It’s nothing that you are doing wrong.

I’ve seen a few authors receiving comments about readers wanting the story to go the other way and not being happy about the author’s vision but at the end of the day it is the author’s vision that they are bringing to life and they shouldn’t feel compelled to change that because it doesn’t fit what someone wanted. I am sure there are other people out there who understand and enjoy your characterisation.

I agree whole heartedly with you about people writing stuff themselves if they have very clear ways they want characters portrayed rather than leaving negative comments. 

Fanfic writers write for free and people spend a lot of time on their fics. They are just trying to share something they have created in the hopes someone else will be able to enjoy it. Fanfics don’t require critiques or reviews, they are all about enjoying and celebrating something together.

thank you for the analysis on Thomas' character! It was very insightful. He's my favourite character in the movie, but there's so much ungenuine readings of his character it's frustrating 😞. From people who think he's a villain in this story (wtf) to people who believe Ellen never actually loved him (lol). A lot of people also completely disregard his character (mainly for shipping purposes, but it's not any less annoying) or can't even tell what his issues are and make stuff up that's not even supported by the movie itself. As if he's not one of the main characters and the entire first half of the movie isn't about his victimisation.

To be quiet honest, shipping discourses do sour every fandom experience, mostly because some discussions retreat into juvenile instincts charading with grown-up language.

It's then more about playing goth Barbie's dream date with differently style Kenndolls, and so the characters get projected on different traits fitting into the story the play should represent for the player. Well fine, but I don't think ever was that subtle or deep with this movie. (And the amount of takes uninterested in looking a bit further -ironically, in spite of Eggers being known and executing very carefully historical accuracy whereever possible- shows by not even paying attention to the fact that the cast are and movie in German Biedermeier society but get called and treated like British "Victorians". Thus leading to inaccurate analysis.)

Safe to say, that I currently don't really like to engage with the fandom or discussions about the movie, mostly because I bought my theater ticket for very different reasons than "the Gothique". For all who enjoy monster romance, please enjoy them. My primary interest was that I like Eggers skripts, and his atmospheric horror, and historical detailed research, and I'm a big fan of Babelsberg era movies. (German expressionist cinema was so unbelievably influential on movie history. Not only for the many creative workers fleeing the Nazis and bringing their talent to Hollywood, Disney's most iconic animation sequences were stolen from largely inspired by Lang's work with lightning. By any means, watch "M", and it turns out every thriller after it hits the same plot beat, the same themes (for better or for worse), just the filming style changed.) And boy does Eggers play Easter Egg hunt for fans of the original in this movie! But I'm also wary of changes Eggers made, and in the over all context of the movie, it's history, it's screening time, especially the context around it, kinda missed the mark. Most of all, I'm a bit disappointment how linear the dialogue is. It leaves little room for ambiguity, lingering unease of the grander sphere of Wisborg, the world getting threatened by Orlock's presence. It also looses the poetic cinematic language from 1922 in which the image, or better the symbolism the image creates, speaks for itself. In 2024, Dr. von Frantz, and the Schema-nun couldn't have duetted more what kind of fearsome fiend Orlock is.

To say, many watched the movie for being a 1830s setting horror film (period aesthetics), they like vampires, Lily Rose Depp has the face and role to make sad girl coquette posts about - super fine reasons to watch a movie because different interests pull different people into the cinema. And I really hope the success will guarantee Eggers continuing his work. Where I see interpretations fail is not realizing that this movie is primarily a remake, and Eggers was still working along a story structure of a monster that breaks apart modernity as well as the assumed safety of the domestic sphere. In his movie, Eggers flips the idyll of imagined domesticity on it's head by having the home be unsafe in the first place. Moreso, Eggers was interested in exploring the character of Ellen Hutter who, in 1922, dies a noble yet unheroic death because in times of plague or social collapse no heroism can truly exist. And here's also a friction between Eggers' re-imagined domestic horror and the 1922 original which was about a structural social collapse, echoing the immediate trauma about surviving WWI, Germany being in an absolute state of mess after it, the abdication of the Hohernzollern family, surviving the Spanish flu pandemic, and being in the midst of a inflation that skyrocketed beyond the stratosphere. And all these fears of that time influenced the story functions of the changes Henrik Galeen made to the script, and in creating their own story. (That's why I resist very much the idea that Nosferatu 1922, or Nosferatu 2024 are "another Dracula interpretation" because it works on very different themes, Orlock represents different fears for a German audience in the 1920s, than Dracula to a British audience in the 1890s, the ending is massively different because they follow different themes, and Orlock is massively desexed to signal his monstrosity lying in death and decay he should represent. I mean, for everyone getting hot and bothered over Max Schreck, or Bill Skarsgård in their costumes respectively, seriously have fun, I genuinely mean it. But let's be real, the creative team did very much intended to make Orlock look repulsive.)

Oh, last but not least, Eggers movies are strongly contextual within their historical background. Katherine in "the VVitch" is the perfect victim by the devil to be groomed because she grows up in a zealous, oppressive community - with her father exiled she basically has no future prospects. (Hence her ending being tragic for her, not liberating.) "The Northman" is a straight up attempt at a saga version of the Danish myth of Hamlet. Hence why themes of fate and providence are concepts people take so seriously within this story.

So that's a long round-about way to get to Thomas: Thomas is never set out to be the hero, but Orlock is definitely the monster as harbringer of death, collapse, and pandemic. The horror in 1922 lay in the tragedy of a young couple wanting to start their life together yet the forces of nature and death rip them apart. And I tell you, in 1920s Germany, Ellen and Thomas were kissing and hugging at every occasion. But most of all, Thomas was an easily understandable protagonist to follow in 1922. He too was full of hope - and in dire need for money. The original movie stresses in an exposition card how well Knock pays his employees, no matter how much more ostentatiously "weird" Herr Knock's entire appearance is. To a 1920s German audience, a young man needing to leave his wife for making money would have made much more initial sense. And you know, in 2024/25 with rising inflation levels, and job insecurity, it does strike me as weird how many takes on Thomas do not take the financial insecurity into account in Thomas' actions. No, he's not career jockey. In fact the movie exposes how Thomas is financially indebted to Friedrich Harding (although Friedrich is being gracious about that matter), and at the bottom of the pecking order at work. There is so, so, so much more to say how the political landscape informs the human characters' values - and how the strain of fiances strain or ease their circumstances. @abbenai has written a wonderful post about how the historical context webs in the characters in regards of politics and finances which I highly recommend to read. X Finances, existential worries about money can gravely interfere with time and possibility for love, care, and affection. That already is a worrying factor for the Hutter household.

Everyone is confined by their times. Even Orlock is the creature of a time in which nobility had absolute rule. Hence he sets up a contract over Ellen's body not letting her voice count. He wants, he receives. He also bosses Herr Knock around without hesitance. The entire movie is very clear that living in the real world is an arduous fight for Ellen, especially when Thomas is gone. (At some point Anna and Thomas have split function, hence the "Harold, they're..." vibes between her and Ellen.) Thomas and Anna are also limited in their time in which, unlike Friedrich and Dr. Sievers showcase a lot of love for Ellen - Ellen's nervosity, breakdowns, and moodswings aren't to be scorned but the tended for.Husband, and best friend can not make anything better because they only can think of consolation. Behind it their intention to see Ellen cheered up. Their ignorance stems from them living relatively adjusted lives (Anna is almost a caricature in her hyper gender performance, looking angelic, pious, endlessly loving, having given birth twice (Louise and Clara seemingly children that did survive their infancy), eagerly awaiting birth of child no.3) who can't fathom anything that could shake up a person so deeply even echoing in their adult life. Yeah, with faults but well-intentioned. And Ellen often clings onto these too when feeling lost because they do actually help her to calm her down.

The turn comes after Thomas himself lives from the almost same horrors with Orlock. Now he truly understands what Ellen went through that she's haunted, and why. However, For him it's even more reason to care for her because now he finally understands her. "Let me go. I'm unclean." "Never."

By all means, it's questionable how easy life would have been for Ellen had she survived with Thomas in the real world burdened with the death of their friends, a society in which women had no perceived personhood, even less so any rights, Ellen getting bombarded with intimate questions about pregnancy and child bearing just shortly after Thomas and her got married. The alternative would be to be eaten away by an entity that openly states that it can not love, and wants Ellen to submit. In contrast Thomas is a relatively chill guy for his time, not pressuring Ellen to have sex or children (in fact Ellen initiates sex), and unlike man-of-his-time-peak-performer Friedrich, doesn't get annoyed with but stays loyal to Ellen. In life Ellen had Greta, had Anna, palyed with Louisa and Clara. And even when disaster struck, Ellen found unexpectedly understanding in Dr. von Frantz. In many ways, life was hard but not void of joy or worth to Ellen. Even in the most dire, insecure, harrowing times, having been badly scarred before, Ellen still finds a lover, a friend, a cat, and a an unexpected stranger that don't make her feel lonely and abandoned. That's the entire worth of Thomas Hutter and Anna Harding.

But yeah, shipping discourse is not really worth getting into. And at some point I think the movie doesn't hold this much substance to be discussed so thouroughly, especially not in it's love triangle dynamic. There, the discussion material exhausts itself quickly as the movie is not subtle about the characters' actions, Orlock's symbolism, and their intentions.

Hey anon, fair warning when it comes to asking my opinion so hopefully I convey myself properly... When it comes to MC and their behavior and mindset for this game, which it's very clear now that their personality is "i'm more horny in theory but when it comes time to utilize that i crash and burn and act like i've never seen dick in my life" and that's what makes me roll my eyes because it's like you're in Hell...you can be as unhinged as you wish please just do that cause everyone keeps saying so.

Now when it comes to the sex content in the game and the way it was advertised, I came in with the expectation that this would be pretty much sex, more sex, and basically more sex. I came here for demon pixel dick and whelp that's what I got. I personally would have liked more of a variety. Maybe devils that are submissive, switches, bratty tops, finally got a pillow prince with Belphie. just missing a damn threesome or something the five kings card was...anyway

But that's just me.

I tend to not bring IRL things (like me not even putting sex on the hierarchy of needs) to media I enjoy unless it's for joking purposes and me being unserious.

NOW I'm not saying plot/slice of life/wholesome content is boring, I pretty much enjoy that breath of fresh air when reading lore, seeing how the devils interact on a day to day basis with one another. At this point since it's been a year I want m o r e of that.

But at the end of the day...they're demons...beings not really meant to be wholesome or human like or behave like us at all. Any wholesome content is a plus, but I'm here once again to scratch an itch.

TLDR: I came to fuck demons. MC isn't fucking them how I would...which is a disappointment, but that's what I'm here for. Lore/Slice of Life content is nice tho and I do enjoy it.

can I be anon pls? i saw an old post where you said you weren't 'shippy' and i'm just wondering, not to be rude, but what's the point of fandom if you're not shipping characters? that's like . . . the whole thing isn't it?

Not rude at all! It sure seems to be the way a lot of people engage in fandom!

For me, though, what I mean about not being shippy is that I personally tend to not get super invested in romantic pairings. Tell me the story, and then I'll decide if I like it or not, but I very rarely find myself screaming at the TV/Book/Whatever "JUST KISS ALREADY!!" If I am going to 'ship' something, it's usually me being like "oh, this Established Couple is very cute" but the "will they/won't they" pairings or love triangles don't interest me much. So in Twilight or the The Hunger Games it was never like, "omg I hope she picks Edward/Jacob/Peeta/Gale!!" I was curious about where the story might go, but I wasn't ever actively cheering for one over the other.

I really loved The Good Place, but got just the tiniest bit annoyed in later seasons when most of the mains got paired off because I liked the ensemble. But it didn't ruin it or anything, I just didn't super care about any of the pairings. I wasn't watching it for romance, I liked the unique setting, the lore, the characters as individuals and as a group.

Another example is Good Omens (what's with the 'Good' theme?). I loved the first season. Loved the lore, loved all the fun characters, loved Aziraphale and Crowley's relationship over the millennia, all great. I was kind of bored with the second season, though, because it became much more insular, much more 'the Aziraphale and Crowley show,' which a lot of people already saw it as, but I hadn't seen it that way previously. I missed the bigger plot, higher stakes and larger ensemble of the first season.

In fandom spaces I'm just generally more interested in lore, in backstory, in characters as individuals or ensembles than I am in romantic pairings. I don't dislike the romance! But I tend to prefer it as part of a larger overall plot rather than the main focus. "Why did you even read Twilight, then?" you ask. I was reading it as a vampire story, not as a romance. I sort of naively thought after the first book established E/B as a couple the other books would be more about their adventures navigating the vampire world. It didn't really go that way, obviously, but by then I was invested in the (mostly secondary) characters so I persisted, and the lore is interesting, even if I interpreted the vampires as darker and sadder than the happy ending suggests.

MARI NOOOOOO. I knew she was doomed all along, but noooooo. She wasn’t even supposed to die! No one was even hunting her Mari just got so unlucky. I miss my little hater. Another diva has gone down :(

My Shauna loyalty is being tested once more. I love the dark side of her, but she did Mari so dirty. The way Mari was butchered unlike any of the others was so sad. Mari was not honored like she made a sacrifice. She was stripped and hung from a tree to bleed. Putting Mari’s hair on the cloak was vile. No one else was treated like that.

I enjoyed the Lottie scene and I am glad we got something for her. I liked the adult Shauna fall out she deserves it all. Misty and Tai plotting is amazing. I am also happy Jeff and Callie left I love the two of them so much.

Now for some Bunny thoughts bc I love the plot you have made. If I were bunny I would be planning with the JV girls on getting out. With the way she is treated out I feel like Bunny must have hit some breaking point. I would try to help Mari in the hunt like Gen. Trying to help that girl get to see another slushy and cheese burger. I know Bunny has some like Stockholm thing with Shauna, but I don’t know if it is so strong to the point where she would go along with Melissa. If it did Bunny better be holding onto her mask during that attempted murder. Also she better be sprinting back after the attempted failed. Her ass would be grass if she got caught. Bunny might as well become pit girl at that point to not deal with the punishment that Shauna would give.

This might just be me getting bored of apocalypse plots or just burnout from listening through the full 200 episodes, so take this with a grain of salt.

I think Archives should've ended at Season 3. Not saying that 4 and/or 5 are bad or anything, hell no! I just think that they meander on for too long too often, if that makes sense. It takes too long for the plot to kick in again and I honestly wanted to start skipping episodes around then too, but couldn't for fear of missing a plot point. That didn't happen for Seasons 1 - 3.

And Season 4 is when the 'Magnus formula' was really stale for me, like the Statements felt like necessary things to get through or afterthoughts, rather than the main crux of the show's tension and horror that they used to be. And after figuring out with Fear was the cause of the episode I kinda just started zoning out more often. Season 3 just felt like Peak Magnus to me and a good enough bow to tie the show up in that the rest just kinda slipped downhill a tad.

But again, I could just be burntout. 40 episodes per season is a lot lol I'm glad Protocol is shorter.

Ok, ok, ok. For some reason my mind BLANKS every time you guys bring up season 4. Which…you may think solidifies anon’s point, but hold on!

Yes, I will disagree with anon… mostly.

Imo: I think seasons 4&5 have some of the most memorable statements we get of the entire show! The Cul-de-sac, Wonderland, Quiet, Elias’s life before Jonah, Weaver, Chosen, Sculptor’s Tool, etc. episodes stand out just by my looking at their titles!

Now, I will say- a couple times in the beginning of season 4, I was like “I don’t CARE about statements, what about-?? *fill in the blank*” because there was SO much that had happened in season 3! So I can definitely see where you’re coming from + your grain of salt. Burnout is super real and being annoyed by or bored of the same thing over and over again is super valid. I could see why you’d be over it!

I’ll disagree though, about statements feeling “stale.” I could potentially see this in s4, but in s5, everything ramped up a WHOLE ton, and I enjoyed those statements a lot because of the stakes of everything, and how they were presented differently. (Like, Wonderland- that GOT me. I was shaken to my core.)

So, I agree, but mostly disagree with anon. What about everyone else? Thoughts?

The collectivel group of Yuus (an Exasperation of Yuus?) have been put through the wringer lately, might I suggest pranks at the expense of villainous embarrassment?

(Corvid Prompts is a writing prompt blog that has a lot of Hero/Villain/Vigilante story ideas. Many of which encourage writers to break out of a typical plot for such genres. I got this idea from them.)

Since they all work under the same League, what petty pranks would the villainous groups pull on each other for the hell of it?

Who would send a goat (or other farm animal) to another hide out to as a reminder to an unfortunate (but funny) goat related incident that happened in the past?

Another incident where during another League thing out of town/country where a pair (from different groups) had to pretend to be married to get out of a mess? What jokes are made for the lack of "wedding" and subsequent "divorce"?

Who fills the entire lair of a villain with plastic balls as disproportionate retribution for taking the last muffin?

You don't need to write anything, but just imagine the insanity? Can you imagine Yuu in any form just exasperated?

Well, Poison Queen’s already pulled the “prank” of attempted love potioning, though that did backfire rather spectacularly on him. Epel would like to say he’s good at pulling them, but Vil’s usually easily able to avoid them. He’s had much more luck with the other rookie minions though!

Rook pulls a prank every time he says he’ll fight White Neige.

Royal Flush would never be caught dead indulging in something as puerile as a prank!… But if he makes the appropriate suggestions to his minions and just so happens to leave plans for them around? Well. He can hardly control everything they do, now can he?

Ace and Deuce are the best at following those and tag teaming to ensure they work, while Trey and Cater specialize in innovating to cover any potential pitfalls. Ace also pulls pranks on Deuce and the rest of Heartslabyul regularly, but woe betide him when his seniors decide that he’s had enough fun, and team up with Deuce for some payback.

Leona loves stealing whatever he can get his hands on from his rival supervillains. If they have it, he wants it, for no other reason than ruining their day when they realize it’s missing. Unsurprisingly, “whatever he can get his hands on” usually ends up being “Yuu the Reporter”.

Ruggie has a very similar mindset, in that he’ll only pull a prank if there’s something physical he gets out of it in return. Usually food.

Jack will not mastermind pranks, because he is a Good Boi. Doesn’t mean he won’t join in on one someone else has thought up.

Azul considers himself too professional to “pull a prank” as the kids say, but he will gladly point Jade and Floyd at his inconveniences dear colleagues and watch the sparks fly.

Floyd has an abiding fondness for large quantities of anything small, plastic, and loud. Jade prefers noxious, brightly colored substances that are a pain to wash out of clothing or architecture.

Kalim is the master of accidental pranks! He genuinely doesn’t mean to get people soaking wet or make their food too spicy or tea too sweet! But if everyone is laughing, he’ll laugh with them!

Jamil doesn’t do pranks. Jamil does retaliation.

One of the small joys of Idia’s life is getting one over on these Luddite normies. If he just wants a quick pick me up, a virus that constantly plays an annoying song on loop or hides files is always a fun way to spend the day. If he’s feeling vindictive, mass ordering insects or livestock to be sent to their lairs is an old favorite.

Ortho will also gleefully participate in his Nii-san’s pranks!! They’re so fun!! However, if Idia hasn’t gotten enough nutrients or fresh air recently, Ortho’s not above pulling a prank or two of his own…

Malleus once tried to prank a NRC conference by balancing a bucket of water on the doorframe. He had no way of knowing that Yuu was going to be sneaking in to eavesdrop and would end up getting drenched.

Lilia isn’t allowed to prank anyone anymore. Not when his pranks verge on the level of psychological warfare.

It’s very, very rare, but Silver occasionally pulls pranks by falling asleep somewhere inconspicuous and summoning inconvenient wildlife to his location. No one ever suspects he can do it on purpose.

Sebek has tried to pull pranks before. He gets too impatient and always accidentally spoils it before the payoff.

Jade and Trey have had to fake getting engaged at least once in order to avoid getting found out as minions during a Fae Incorporated(TM) sponsored gala.

Trey has also had to pretend he was married to Rook in order to maintain cover at another, completely separate event.

Jade and Rook like to tease poor Trey about his “infidelity”. Floyd once tried to beat up Trey for his brother’s honor.

Trey still isn’t quite sure whether he was serious or not.
