Also one of the fun cards would be called "Startin a strike" you would have to throw the coins in the air from the bank and try to get more money

Books Recs of 2024

The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett. Mystery/fantasy centered around Din, a young assistant investigator assigned to help an eccentric and infamous detective, Ana Dolabra, solve a series of murders. Din is an engraver, his brain altered so he has a photographic memory. However, no one is quite sure how he got his current position, since he failed every single one of his final exams except the combat portion. Ana is an exceedingly odd woman who refuses to go to any crime scene in person and often performs mad science experiments in her spare time. As Din struggles to keep up with the case, which revolves around a bioweapon being unleashed on a series of the empire's best engineers, he also worries what will happen when Ana finally uncovers his secrets.

Highfire by Eoin Colfer. Urban fantasy (very comedic fantasy) about a dragon called Vern (short for Wyvern), who teams up with a juvenile delinquent named Squib (real name Everett Moreau) to take down a corrupt sheriff who is plaguing the Lousiana bayou. Vern is a very small (seven feet long) dragon who is the last of his kind (as far as he knows). When he is spotted by a local troubled teen, his first instinct is to hunt Squib down and kill him, but he quickly realizes the two of them have a common enemy- the murderous sheriff who is running drugs through their territory.

The Last Tale of the Flower Bride by Roshani Chokshi. Magical realism about a romantic-minded art historian who is swept off his feet by a mysterious and charming heiress. After a whirlwind courtship, the happy couple return to her childhood home; a Gothic manor on a lonely island. The more time our narrator spends around his wife's past, the more questions are raised- increasingly sinister ones about who she is and what exactly she is capable of. Once upon a time, she was best friends with an equally odd and dreamy little girl named Indigo. But no one has seen Indigo for many years now- and the Flower Bride may be behind her disappearance.

Chlorine by Jade Song. Horror/magical realism. Since childhood, Ren's entire identity has been wrapped up in swimming. If she can be strong enough, fast enough, special enough, success is sure to come her way. As the end of high school approaches, Ren's passion for swimming becomes less about her future, and more about past legends of mermaids and sirens dragging sailors into the deep. School, friends, and her parents' expectations all fall away- Ren will make her home in the water, no matter what she has to do.

We Are Not Like Them by Christine Pride & Jo Piazza. Realistic fiction. Jen and Riley have been best friends for as long as they can remember, despite their vastly different childhoods. Riley is from a middle class Black family; Jen was raised by an impoverished white single mother. After twenty years of doing almost everything together, their lives are at a crossroads- Riley is a news anchor about to take Philadelphia by storm, while Jen is expecting her first child with her police officer husband. When Jen's husband is involved in the murder of a Black teenage boy by a fellow officer, Riley finds herself expected to cover the story- and Jen finds herself expected to answer for her husband's actions- and her own beliefs about what racism looks like.

Queenpin by Megan Abbott. Crime thriller/noir. Our nameless heroine lives a mousy existence working as a bookkeeper for a rundown local night club, but her life is turned upside down when the infamous Gloria Denton, a gun moll and smuggler, takes her under her wing. Gloria transforms her young protege from a timid girl to a sophisticated, cunning woman capable of handling gangsters, conmen, thieves, and bookies, but when she falls for the wrong man, her relationship with Gloria is strained, and they must decide just how far they can trust one another.

Everyone Knows Your Mother is a Witch by Rivka Galchen. Historical fiction. Based on the real life trial of Katharina Kepler, mother of the famed Johannes Kepler, Imperial Mathematician to the Holy Roman Empire. Katharina is a busybody, a domineering and devilishly clever woman with a particular talent for healing. She is also a fiercely loyal mother to her adult children, but when an old neighborhood grudge flares into accusations of poison and witchcraft, Katharina is determined not to meekly confess and beg pardon. The more she lashes out at her neighbors and the authorities, the more charges begin to pile up against her- despite her son's desperate attempts to save her from torture and execution.

Bury Me Deep by Megan Abbott. Crime thriller/noir. Based on a real life murder case in 1931 Phoenix Arizona. Naive and sheltered Marion Seeley is deposited in Phoenix by her disgraced doctor husband, who is forced to take a job with a mining company in South America after his medical license is revoked. Marion befriends the vivacious Louise and Ginny, two fellow nurses, who introduce her to the underground party scene in Phoenix. Politicians and businessmen flock to the secret parties held by them, and it's a quick way to make money on the side. Drawn in by the luxury and thrills, Marion falls in love with Joe Lanigan, a powerful local politician, but as their affair intensifies, her friendship with the other women fractures, culminating in a gruesome crime.

My brain has been struggling to support Newsies brainrot and Batfam brainrot, and the result shouldn't surprise you.

Two words: Batfam Newsies AU.

I was struck with it halfway through watching a live production of the Broadway version (amazing), but it would probably be more based on the 1992 movie (childhood favorite, I know it better. As in I can quote it all to you.)

So hear me out- I think Jason as Jack Kelly. In 92sies, Jack Kelly is a fake name, so his real name revealed at the end can be ✨Jason Peter Todd✨! But like, grew up on the streets, no living family, watches out for the younger/newer kids, frustrated with the system. For him, I think, Santa Fe would be a lot more metaphorical, since I can't picture him wanting to leave Gotham, but Santa Fe (the song) just is Jason, you can't tell me otherwise.

Tim as Crutchy, and here's where more of the Broadway comes in, because I love their sibling dynamic in it, and it's a little less so in 92sies. Still there, but not as much. The live show I saw had a younger girl as Crutchy, and their dynamic was just amazingggg. Anyway. Maybe he ran away, maybe his parents died early, maybe they just ditched him, whatever. He does this now.

Dick as Davey, Damian as Les. Now their personalities don't match up quiiiite as well, but I think it could be done. If Dami's a little younger, perhaps. I'm thinking Dick got shuttled into the orphanage and met Dami, and bc it's still Gotham, the orphanage sucks and they're supposed to go make money or whatever. I dunno, that's the tricky bit.

We can keep Snyder, Medda (unless you wanted to put Selina there, but I don't really see it.) the Delanceys and Weasel, and the rest of the gang of newsies as is, unless anyone has suggestions for them. I'm all ears!

I'd go by the movie for this and have Clark Kent be Bryan Denton, the reporter, mostly because I can't really think of anyone to fit the role of Katherine, and definitely not someone I'd ship with Jason. Plus then, Pulitzer can be Lex Luthor and that's amazing to me lol.

And finally Bruce as Governor of New York Gotham, Teddy Roosevelt! I'd definitely have him play a larger role. You have Jason/Jack hitching a ride on his carriage from the Refuge, and then maybe trying to steal his tires or something later on, they talk, blah blah blah, strike stuff.

Of course, at the end of the strike and all, the brothers are closer than ever, and the nice old Governor is like "mine"

I don't know if this is even coherent, but please feel free to add your ideas!! If you use this to write a fic (please someone, I want to but I'm so busy, maybe eventually) just make sure to credit 😊 if there are any Newsies x Batman fics, PLEASE link them!!! I'd love to see it!

NSB (Straud Legacy) Gen 9 Ep 84: An Unplanned Moment

Noemi had found the explanation for her discomfort. Somehow, despite their best efforts to prevent it, she and Luigi had managed to make a baby.

She sat staring at the faint, but unmistakable, second pink line on the pregnancy test with a million thoughts racing through her head. Would she and Luigi be able to finish school before the birth? How would they handle parenthood while both trying to establish their careers?

The loudest worry floating through her brain was how was Luigi would take the news. Noemi hadn’t wanted a child yet, but she had considered having children with Kiana previously. She was scared but knew she could handle it. Luigi on the other hand… he’d made it clear that fatherhood was in his plans but not something he was ready to think about for a long time. Well ready or not, she’d have to break the news to him that the future was now.

Stowing the test for later and washing her hands, Noemi caught a glimpse of her profile in the mirror and froze in her tracks.

Despite her love of fitness, she’d never had a completely flat stomach, but suddenly her midsection was notably larger and rounded. Of their own accord her hands found their way to her belly, cupping the curves that hadn’t been there a few moments before. Now she had a new worry – hiding her “condition” long enough to plan how to tell her boyfriend. She didn’t need him freaking out the minute he walked in the door!

Noemi was still worrying about how best to downplay her new figure and break the news gently when Luigi pinged her phone.

His Great Grandpa Storm had invited them and Denton to come grab dinner at the Humor and Hijinks festival. Luigi’s text cheerfully described his distant ancestor as “the nicest sim you’ll ever have the pleasure of knowing. I can’t wait to introduce you two!”.

The last thing Noemi wanted to do just then was meet someone new, no matter how nice they were, but she also wanted Luigi in the best possible frame of mind for what she had to tell him. With a sigh she texted back that she’d be there shortly before jogging into the bedroom and frantically hunting through her drawers for something to wear. The outfit she finally settled on wasn’t perfect, but she’d just have to hope it was good enough.

When she arrived, Luigi was preoccupied chatting with Denton about a hot new videogame his cousin was reviewing and gave her a vague nod.

He called out to the ghost who was apparently his grandfather that “this lovely lady is my girlfriend Noemi” before turning back to his engrossing conversation. As she made her own introductions to Storm, who quickly put her at ease with his kind and gentle manner, she vowed to hold it together for just a little while longer. Seeing Luigi, she’d been overcome with a desire to share her burden with the father of their child, but she knew now was absolutely not the time or place. They’d have their fun, get back home, and then she’d show him the test and brace for impact.

I did not plan this pregnancy. However, with rare exception it’s not generally my style to reverse big life events like this and so I rolled with it.

Even layered birth control does fail sometimes in real life, and they’ve certainly been having enough fun in the bedroom to “earn” this baby 😄!

Ok this is just me but I don’t like Sarah x Katherine. Not because they’re both girls, obviously, but I don’t like it because Katherine is just a different version of Sarah.

Like objectively the ship is fine, there’s nothing wrong with it and people can write really cute fics of the two. But my brain just can’t get past the fact that they’re essentially the same person. I know they aren’t, but Katherine is just Sarah and Denton merged together and my brain doesn’t like that.

At this point I started to think harder about the songs that have meant the most to me throughout my life and as I've gotten older. For example, I like a lot of Bright Eyes songs more than First day, but that song has had way more impact on me. I play it all the time, the lyrics are permanently imprinted in my mind, and to me it's one of the most beautiful and vulnerable love songs ever written. With that in mind more and more "important" songs started coming to mind.

I remembered that one Demarco song that makes me cry everytime I hear it. Got to include that. How many times have I listened to the Glow pt 2 during the summer? How could I leave off something from Porcupine Tree, the band that I once considered my favorite band of all time? So I kept going, through names and bands that I collect like emotional trophies, not wanting to leave anything out. They all mean so much, it's honestly pathetic. I used to hyperfixate on things like Zelda and Star Wars, then I found this shit and my brain chemistry has been altered ever since.

Funny how quickly a song can feel like home. That Crane Wives song technically shouldn't even be here, I only heard it for the first time a few weeks ago. Yet maybe listening to it 30 times since qualifies it for consideration. Phoebe Bridgers has a lyric in one of her songs about wishing she had written something instead of the original artist, but she can't cause they said it first. So instead she'll learn their song and sing until the feverish inspired feeling fades away in a voyeuristic catharsis.

I think about that line constantly. Also quickly want to mention here that I'm more of an album guy. I try to listen to full records to try an experience the full piece of art the creator made. So while no song off The Downward Spiral is on my list of favorite songs, that was and is one of the most impactful albums to me as a teenager.

Swans was hard, because there were a few songs that meant a lot to me. But ultimately there wasn't one more visceral or frankly more evil sounding than New Mind. Love the themes, love the singing style, love the backing yells, love the industrial outro, love the faint organ, love everything about that damn song.

The list kept getting longer, and for each song I was writing a paragraph to explain my choice lol. After the first like 15 I decided to stop doing that for the sake of your eyes and for risk of sounding redundant. But a major thing I love about some of these songs are how inspirational they are. Twin Sized Mattress, Denton Metal Band, Story of an Artist, they all paint a picture of the type of person I want to be. The type of art I will always support. The thing I hope to one day inspire in other people.

When you punish a person for dreaming their dream don't expect them to thank or forgive you. The best ever death metal band out of Denton, will in time both outpace and outlive you.

Those words could honestly save someone's life, it's crazy.

Certain ones (like that tool song) actually changed the way I look at the world and helped me through dark periods of my life.

Many of them inspire me, some of them are just beautiful in a broken and real sorta way, and all of them feel human. The art represents something bigger than itself and the ambition knows no bounds. These songs changed my world for the better, and if you read this you are now obligated to listen to all of them.

OUGH. Beef and Montrose as foils!!! The way that Montrose intentionally puts himself in danger while Beef just wants to keep his friends safe, and the difference in how they deal with Emerich's emotional trauma, Beef trying to fix him while Montrose immediately writes it off, ready for more action. How Montrose gets excited and enables the brief periods where Beef gets angry and wants to hurt people and do crime!!! Beef wanting to make his friends better while Montrose (maybe unintentionally) pushes to make them worse. sorry if this is totally incoherant, im just rotating them in my mind constantly

do not apologize i FULLY AGREE!!! literally the make friends better (intentionally)/make them worse (incidentally, but also sometimes intentionally) dynamic is SO much to me. the way the hotter the water they get into, the more beef withdraws, while the more montrose wants to dive in. beef's idealism where it comes to dentonic vs montrose's self-preservation! everything about beef trying to gently let montrose down about ephemera being fiction...!!!
