If any of y'all had tips for aspiring TTRPG creators, what would they be? I'm hosting a "How to Make your own TTRPG" panel at a con this weekend, and anything to show folks from a fellow indie studio would be great!
Yeah a bunch. Each one of these could basically be its own post, but here are the condensed versions.
Social Media
You need social media. No one will ever hear of your game without a strong social media presence. And as much as it sucks, your best bet is probably tumblr. It’s the only populated social media site that allows your posts to be widely circulated without you having to pay, and also long form enough to actually include information. I dedicate one day a week entirely to social media and that’s just about the only reason we make any money at all.
Also, when using tumblr, the first five tags you put on a post are the most important, those are the tags that make it show up on people’s dashboards. The first twenty tags are the ones that make it show up in search results. Don’t put the name of your game in the first five tags generally, because if no one has heard of it yet, no one is following those tags.
Don’t Paywall Your Game
You deserve to be paid for your work if you indeed did any work at all (we’ll get to that), but that just isn’t the world we live in. Unless you have an advertising budget to essentially trick people into buying a game that might end up being crap, you need something to prove that your game is worth spending money on. Without an advertising budget, that proof has to be your game. Setting your game to pay-what-you-want, or providing “community copies,” lets people try your game before they buy. Plenty of people will buy up-front when given the option, and others who can’t afford it at that moment will download it for free then come back and pay later. Some people will never pay, but what that means for you is that they either never experience your game, or they pirate it. People experiencing your game, showing it to their friends, and talking about it is one of the most valuable pieces of advertisement you can ever have. It will ultimately lead to more people who are willing and able to pay learning about your game.
Start Small but Not Too Small
Do not make a one-page game for your first game. Do not be like us and make a 700-page game for your first game. Try to aim for something between 20 and 200 pages, especially if you’re one person or a small team.
Play and Read a lot of RPGs or Your Game Will Suck
Would you watch a movie by a director who had only ever watched one movie? Would you read a book by an author who had only ever read one book? Hell no, those would suck.
Read many rpg rulebooks, from many different genres and decades, play as many of them as you can (by the rules) to understand how the rules work and why they’re there. This will give you the creative tools you need to make something that isn’t just a weaker version of the last RPG you played. No, listening to "actual plays" does not count.
Most actual plays stray significantly from presenting a regular gameplay experience in favor of an experience that is entertaining for an audience. If you want to learn martial arts, you should be watching martial arts tournaments, not WWE.
If you want an actual play podcast that has my “actually mostly presents a real gameplay experience” approval, try Tiny Table.
If you say you don’t have time to read rulebooks, then you don’t have time to design a good game. Studying is part of the process of creating. If you don't, you won't even know about gleeblor.
This will let you know whether your "innovation" is more like "Cars don't need to run on gasoline!" or "Cars don't need crumple zones and airbags!"
The Rules Matter, So Design with Intent
The rules matter the rules fucking matter holy shit what you actually write down on the page matters I can’t believe this is actually the seemingly most needed piece of advice on this list. The. rules. matter.
Design your game to be played in the way you designed it. The rules affect the tone and genre of your game, they affect the type of people PCs can be and the kind of stories that will result from gameplay. Bonuses encourage PC behaviors, penalties discourage PC behaviors.
Do not fall for the trap of “oh well people will just play it their own way based on vibes anyway so it doesn’t matter what I write the rules to be.” Write that you wrote this game to be played by the rules and that significant changes to the rules mean that players are no-longer playing the game you made. Write like you deserve for your art to be acknowledged by its audience. If you don’t, then there is no point in anyone playing the game you made, because if the person who wrote it doesn’t even care what the rules say, why should anyone? The people whose “playing” of TTRPGs consists of never opening the rulebook and improving based on “vibes” will still do that no matter what, but the people who would have actually tried to engage with your game will find that it sucks if you don’t even care what the rules are yourself.
Playtest
You need to playtest your game if you want it to work as intended. You need multiple sets of eyes on it. If you don’t have the opportunity personally to do so, just release your game anyway with the acknowledgement that it’s unfinished. Call it an alpha or a beta version, and ask for people that do play it to give feedback, then update and fix the game based on that feedback.
Ignore Feedback
Most people do not have any game design credibility, perhaps least of all TTRPG players. You do not, in fact, have to listen to everything people say about your game. Once you ask for feedback, people will come to you with the most deranged, asinine, bad-faith “feedback” you can imagine, and then get really mad at you when you don’t fall to your knees and kiss their feet about it. You do not need to take this feedback at face value, instead you need to learn to read between the lines and find out which parts of the rules text are being misinterpreted by players, and which incorrect assumptions players are making about your game. Then, you update and improve the game by clearing those up. Only like 30% of “feedback” you receive will actually be a directly helpful suggestion in its own right at face value.
You can’t please everyone, and shouldn’t, so appeal to the people who actually like your game for being what it is, not the people who don’t.
Read Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy
Yeah this one sounds self-serving but hear me out. Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy is as much a treatise on TTRPG game design as it is a game itself. When it presents mechanics and rules, it tells you what they are, why they are, how they are, and what you’re intended to do with them. This makes it an excellent example to read for anyone wanting to get serious about game design and learn how TTRPGs tick under the hood, and an excellent example of a TTRPG that expects players to play it the way it was written to be played, and why that is a good thing. Also you can download it for free.

This is the beginning of the end, and this time we have a drastic shift from the previous two redesigns with like... and actual redesign of Water Hazard/orishan/Bivalvan- hmm... let's just call this Bivalvan because I've drawn him before :P
First of all- so many eyes. Clam eyes are so (relatively) freaky y'all, truly the 'people with blue eyes: *staring into your soul*' type energy, so of the 10 visible eyes, Bivalvan has an eye ring, an iris and a pupil :)
And what do I mean by only ten visible eyes, there's a lot more blue on this design than 10. That's because those aren't eyes, that's the colour of his flesh and thus, for every hole in the armour is a valve (hah!) for water flow and thus, breathing! Things like the muscles in the claws and hood and the foot visible between Bivalvan's legs and waist are for mobility, the tendons mainly for closing joints and creating a water tight seal, the foot for movement of the limbs.
Speaking of limbs, you can clearly see how different Bivalvan's legs are :) really putting in the cockroach of my personal biases. An orishan's hands are just claws akin to the ones that rest on their waist that rest inside the claw. And those claws are in fact water cannons :P

irredeamable development retrospective. Part 1: shadow and light This is gonna be pretty messy since what came before or after gets all tangled up when you go back this far, but the earliest project that can be identified in the file is a game about controlling a specter where you could take control of all kind of people or creatures and use their unique attacks and movement ability to navigate the world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We got humans, cats, snake, ants, succubus, and my beloved mitons, a race of giant rolly polly pillbugs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aniway, the story eventually developped into being about a rivalry between two specters sibling. Nox and solaria. They also each came with a unique appearance for each race they could control. Through, i sadly never did make their mitons form...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The idea behind the game was that each chapter, you would awaken as one of the two and try to usurp and destroy whatever the other had built in your absence. Nox eras were more focused on primal cults of fear and darkness while Solaria would make grand empires to worship her. There was a back and forth between the two but time and technology would progress with each era. All i got left when it comes to how the world would have been laid out is this line map that shows the general ways the area connects and the ideas of how certain locations could change depending on the era.
Tumblr media
There were also plans to introduce a new antagonist later on with Cain, a new, much more powerful specter that forces the sibling to make a truce. His backstory was that he used to have a similar rivalry with his brother able, but eventually ended up destroying him and is now deeply sad and alone.
Tumblr media
So how far did it go? The game pretty much didn't get out of the conceptual phase. Got around to code the possession mechanics and a few of the races' movesets, but that's about it. Anyway, you`re free to get inspired by or even steal anything here. I have way more ideas than i can actually use and everything in these old projects has either been abandoned or altered so much that it's now something completely different. See you next time for the next chapter of our retrospective. Capitalism, IN SPACE!

Ground Zero : Chapter 1
We were just kids
It was a warm, bright spring day. The air hummed with life as Viper and Lilian, two young sisters, climbed high into the trees surrounding their home. The divine nature of the children who inhabited this mystical place made everything flourish with abundance, especially the forest that enveloped their lovely manor. Today, the sisters were testing their climbing skills, eager to push their limits.
Lilian wore a pastel yellow spring overall set, her soft brown hair tied in a neat braid. Viper, slightly older, sported a sleek black jumpsuit, her wild, short hair whipping in the breeze. Viper had a firm grip on the bark as she hoisted herself up, the rough texture of the tree scraping her palms. She paused every so often to glance down, making sure her younger sister could follow, lending her a hand when needed.
The trees on the island were strange—foreign even to those who ventured from distant continents. Some stood as tall as small mountains, while others, like the teenage spruce they were climbing, barely stretched beyond a single story. To Viper and Lilian, this was just the right height for a bit of fun, their favorite tree for an afternoon adventure.
When they reached the top, the sisters settled, wrapping one arm around each other and the other around the rough trunk for balance. From their perch, they could see the vibrant world of the forest unfold below them—creatures scampering into tree hollows, birds singing sweet melodies, flowers blossoming in bursts of color that painted the earth like an artist's palette. The soft rustle of the leaves in the gentle breeze was almost hypnotic.
Viper let out a satisfied sigh, her lips curling into a smile as she took in the scene. “It’s beautiful up here, isn't it?” she murmured. Lilian pressed her cheek against the tree, the cool, textured bark grounding her as she felt the pulse of life flowing through it. “It’s like the tree is alive, breathing,” Lilian whispered, eyes wide in wonder.
Suddenly, Viper shifted her footing, but her shoe slipped on a patch of slick moss. Her heart leaped in her chest as her balance tipped backward. Panic flashed across her face as she felt gravity pull her down, her fingers clawing at the bark in a futile attempt to stop the fall.
“Viper!” Lilian’s voice rang out, sharp with fear. Time seemed to slow for the younger sister. Reflexes honed from their divine nature kicked in as Lilian’s eyes followed Viper’s fall. With no hesitation, her body reacted—muscles coiled like springs ready to release. Her wrist split open as if by instinct, the skin parting without pain. Out shot veins and nerves, twisting and transforming in the open air into vine-like tendrils.
The botanical tendrils lashed out, snaking around Viper’s waist just as she slipped out of reach. The vines tightened and jerked her sister back toward the tree. Viper grunted as she collided with the trunk and a few branches on the way down, earning a few scrapes, but she was safe. She blinked in shock, catching her breath as she looked up at Lilian’s pale, strained face.
“Gotcha,” Lilian exhaled, her arm trembling as her vines began to retract. The tendrils slithered back into her skin, reshaping into their original form. A few of them lingered, wrapping themselves around the open wound on her wrist, forming a leafy bandage that covered the cut and started the healing process.
Viper, still clinging to a branch just beneath her, rubbed the back of her head with a wry grin. “Nice catch, Lil’,” she said, her voice light but still a bit shaken. Her nails elongated into small, sharp claws, sinking into the tree for extra grip. “You okay? I didn’t make you use too much of your power, did I?”
Lilian, still slightly out of breath, nodded as she lowered herself onto the branch beside her sister. “I’m fine, just… don’t do that again, please,” she said with a shaky laugh, her vines tightening one last time before they vanished under her skin completely. “You scared me.”
Viper gave her a playful shove with her shoulder. “I’ll try not to make a habit of it,” she teased, though there was genuine gratitude in her eyes. She looked around as the last bits of adrenaline faded, and added, “Think we should head back?”
Lilian glanced toward the horizon, where the sun was already beginning its descent. “Yeah, Ty said we should only be out for a few hours. Plus, I think we’ve done enough climbing for one day.”
With a shared look and a nod, the two girls carefully made their way back down the tree, their feet finding steady purchase on each branch as they descended. The forest was alive with sounds, the wind whistling through the leaves, the hum of distant wildlife creating a serene symphony.
Elsewhere, the dead came in all shapes and sizes—some old, some young, and tonight, one of them was a child. Kaboo’s footsteps were silent as she moved through the dimly lit forest, her black aura shimmering around her like the wings of a raven. Despite her otherworldly appearance, she had a calm, soothing presence, the kind that could ease even the most terrified soul.
The little ghost girl stood shaking, her translucent form flickering with fear. Kaboo approached her slowly, her expression devoid of emotion, but there was something in her eyes—an unspoken promise of safety. “No one is going to hurt you here anymore,” Kaboo said softly, her voice a quiet, steady rhythm that seemed to soothe the child.
The girl, wide-eyed, looked up at Kaboo, her voice trembling. “I don’t wanna go…”
Kaboo knelt, her dark silhouette blending into the shadows. “Where would you like to go, then?” she asked, her tone patient as she reached into her pocket, pulling out a handkerchief to gently wipe the child’s tear-streaked face.
The girl sniffled, calming under Kaboo’s touch. “I… I want to see Mama and Papa again.”
Kaboo’s lips curled into a soft smile, the first real warmth she had shown all night. “They’re waiting for you behind those doors,” she whispered, pointing toward the shimmering light in the distance. The girl’s eyes lit up with hope, and she slowly began to walk toward the glow, disappearing as she crossed the threshold.
Meanwhile, back at the manor, Raiya lay sprawled on the floor, her face pressed into the wooden planks as her chest heaved with heavy breaths. “Dragon Witch… defeated…” she panted, her words muffled by exhaustion.
Jessa, a small toddler, sat triumphantly on her older sister’s back, waving her arms in the air. “I win! I win!” she squealed in delight.
Raiya groaned, too tired to argue. She had faced dangerous beasts, outrun law enforcement, and battled feral monsters in the past, but nothing compared to the bottomless energy of her little sister. She rolled onto her side, sending Jessa tumbling into the cushions of the nearby couch with a giggle.
“Alright, Jessa,” Raiya said, her voice heavy with fatigue. “Big Sis is tired. How about some cocoa before bed?”
Jessa’s face lit up as she nodded eagerly. “Cocoa!” she chirped, bouncing on the couch, her favorite stuffed animal Mr. Rex clutched in her arms.
Raiya smiled fondly, brushing a hand through her tangled hair as she pushed herself up. As she walked toward the kitchen, she felt the familiar dull ache in her shoulder—a reminder of the gunshot wound from the previous night. She winced slightly but shrugged it off, focusing instead on preparing the hot chocolate.
In another room, Tyra sat by the window, her eyes heavy with exhaustion from a long night of patrol. But when Diane toddled up to her, arms raised for a hug, Tyra felt a sudden rush of warmth. She scooped her little sister up and held her close, the setting sun casting a golden glow over them as they embraced.
For a moment, the weariness melted away, replaced by the simple comfort of family.

Male reader as Lloyd's love interest👨🏼‍🤝‍👨🏻💕:
Kim suho knows you as Lloyd's butler and he pitied you for that. Everytime you were mentioned in the novel, it's always Lloyd verbally abusing you and you just took it without a fight.
Now imagine his surprise when you kiss his cheek when he was alone in his room as Lloyd Frontera.
Kim suho suddenly woke up in the body of the infamous Lloyd Frontera and went back to his room with Javier's escort. When he arrives, he saw you serving him as normal, that is until Javier leaves and you kiss his cheek. Put your hands on his cheeks and with a soft voice, you asked about his wellbeing while scolding him. Kim suho has never been so confused in all of his life. What's happening? Why are you so soft? This isn't right
"My dear, how many times have I told you to keep your alcohol in check? I'm worried for you. I know you want this relationship to be a secret but you get yourself in too much trouble for me to not be worried" "what."
Turns out, Kim suho found out that you and him- or yet in better words, the real Lloyd has been dating for more than a year. When Kim Suho found that out, he thought he was about to get a heart attack. 'How?! How can a bastard get such a cute guy to be with him?!' It doesn't make sense until it clicked. He remembers that the real Lloyd only verbally abuses you but never physically assaulted you like he did with everyone else. 'So that was all an act..?' He was up all night thinking everything over.
Fast forward, KM! Lloyd decides to reveal this secret relationship because it's better than keeping a secret. Plus, Kim Suho has fallen fast for 'his' lover. And he reveals it by kissing you after his battle with Sir Neurmann and getting rid of him. This not only surprises you but also to everyone else by this discovery. You had never turn so red in your life. In the end, no one cares. The villagers don't mind(although they were a bit confused on your relationship) and Lloyd's parents are supportive of his loved one even if they thought it was weird how they got together.
And so day by day, Lloyd keep changing and he's now a changed man. For the better. Lloyd may always risk his lives but the reason why he always is so determined to get back up again is because of the thought of you. And how you are always worried for and want him to come back safe when he doesn't bring you to help him. He's not disappointing his future husband! Not now, or ever!
And he'll always be greeted with loving arms everytime he managed to came back.
That's all for today, loves. My brain has mushed out💕

Why do Neil and yuri look so different?
Lowkey long but uhh
Well, Neil and Yuri, since they are my main thing, I want them to look very different. I know irl that they mostly had the same build, Yuri maybe was more toned, but they both with thin guys.
I wanted them to have different builds to make the vibe of them being opposites stand out within the design itself. Well, how I even got Yuri was... I wanted Valentina to have more to her. She was just kinda a one-off. Well, I see everyone in history as important, so I wanted her to be more. When I was drawing, she looked really lonely on the page, so I wanted her to have a friend. First woman, then why not first man? So I had them put together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's what came from that little era. Valentina got her old design, and Yuri existed. Now Yuri looks NOTHING like he does now. And why is that is because I didn't know what to do with him. The idea that him and Valentina were forced together, so he's just a little nervous and bad at talking to people because they don't get off his back. He was more fit than Neil, but Yuri was 5'2", so I shrunk him.
Yuri was made short and scrawny.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yuri became erratic, scared of everything on the face of the Earth guy. Now, the only issue I really had was.. I wanted him softer! Neil was more angled. I wanted Yuri to be softer. He was nervous! He was everything Neil wasn't supposed to represent. He was scared!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There. Yuri's softness. He became chubby!!! How fun!! He was Neil's opposite!!!... now neil was the issue... Yuri, as I joke, does kinda get fatter each time I draw him. It mainly sits at his waist. Neil looked lacking in comparison to me. So I decided Armstrong needed to mean something and bulked Neil up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So um yah that's it.

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP MMMEEEEEEE DX
Tumblr media
I've been playing with these twos designs since forever, but I can never be sure if their actually good, like, objectively.
Can people look at these and tell me what I might need to remove/improve/add
Some character info
I'll try to make this concise as possible
For one, this takes place in a superhero scifi setting.
Psi
With Psi, I was going with android with insect motif, in particularly, butterfly and moth.
He was a human who's psyche was put into a techno organic robot body because he was on the verge of dyeing.
He grew up in a privileged setting but was mainly raised by robots made by his family.
He used to be always sick as a kid
He is a child prodigy that has a hard time with people because of his up brining.
Before being put into a robot body, he worked as a scientist (robotics specifically, however, he heavily dabbled in other fields as well)
He put himself in the robot body after a group tried to kill him and steal his technology and use it for their own gain
He feels like his intelligence is his one good defining trait, something that he relies on and something he thinks is the only thing he can offer to help people
Because of his upbringing, he is naturally curious about almost everything, despite him probably already knowing about it from his research.
After having his psyche put into an android body, he left his previous position to proses his thought and feelings and he also felt like he could do more good with his new body and intellect
Aster
Aster and their younger siblings were orphaned kids and were captured by Venlarians (a faction of bad guys in my story baseikly) and were trained and brain washed to be assassins and soldiers. (Aster became a well known assassin and sniper)
They were also experimented on a given powers (Aster specifically has minor mater manipulation abilities and can heal really fast and from major injuries. They can also teleport and harden their skin)
At the age of 18-19, they escaped but were separated from their siblings
They are adopted by another character, Mar (Who was the adopted son of the bbeg and emperor of the venularian empire before killing him)
After living with him and Mar trying to give them a normal child hood and saying that he and his colleagues will find them. (After defecting from Venularian empire, he joined the coalition of heroes which is like the justice league to put it in short terms), Aster wants to go out and find their siblings.
They also want to help others because they want to repent for what they were made to to while being controlled by the empire and so no one has to suffer under the empire.
Once their old enough, they take a space craft to explore the galaxy and to find their siblings and to help people.
They love exploring different planets and parts of the galaxy
She often hides her true feelings under a happy go lucky veneer, not wanting to scare people and not wanting her loved ones to worry about her.
Because of her powers and background, she doesn't have a lot of worry about her well being, often saving her friends and people in need at the expense of her well being because "I'll just heal right up! Don't worry, I can take it"
Aster originally had some avian aspects and I want to add those features again.
some other aspects for these two, they were slightly inspired by Psych and Eros
Idk if I want to make psi a different color other than blue, make his color pallet black and white like before or what.
sry for all the text, I always feel weird when talking about my oc's for some reason but I felt like the context was needed for me to get help with their designs
