“Failure Is a Stepping Stone”
Summary: In the quiet hours before a major exam, you’re overwhelmed by period pain and the dread of being unprepared. Anaxagoras — the eccentric, infamous scholar — finds you in your distress. With his unique mix of irreverent wit and unspoken warmth, he comforts you through the night, easing your pain, grounding your panic, and reminding you that even chaos can be a stepping stone to brilliance.
Tags: Anaxagoras x Reader, Hurt/Comfort, Fluff, Period Comfort, Academic Stress, Soft Anaxa, Reader-in-Distress, Eccentric Mentor, Established Relationship or Developing Bond, Protective Anaxagoras, Late-Night Vulnerability, One-Bed Trope (Gentle), Pretty much Self-indulgent.
Warnings: Mentions of Period Cramps/Pain, Academic Anxiety/Stress, Emotional Distress, Brief Mention of Nausea and Insomnia, Soft Angst, Anaxagoras Being Incredibly Tender (Emotional Damage Warning If You're Not Braced for It).
A/N: I kissed the brick this time. ☺️💖🫶

It was past midnight. The moon hung like a pale coin in the black velvet sky, half-shadowed — much like how you felt.
The Grove’s once-lively corridors were still, only the distant hum of magical wards and an occasional echo of an owl punctuating the silence. Everyone else had long buried themselves in their tomes, or fallen asleep atop them.
You, however, sat curled up at the foot of your bed, cradling a heat pack to your stomach, eyes bleary and red. The textbooks lay open around you like a battlefield, pages dog-eared, highlighted, and forgotten.
Your abdomen throbbed with an unforgiving ache, like molten weights swirling inside you. And the panic—
It crept up your spine like a parasite.
Exams. Tomorrow. You're not ready. You're failing.
You pressed your forehead against the cold bedpost.
A knock echoed on your door.
You didn’t respond, hoping the night would swallow you whole instead.
The door creaked open anyway. A familiar voice, laced with exaggerated flourish and an undertone of sincere concern, followed:
“Am I interrupting a ritual of self-destruction, or is this the ‘mourning of motivation’ I’ve read so much about in your kind’s textbooks?”
You groaned. “Anaxa... not now.”
“Oh, perfect. You can still speak. That means the gods haven’t claimed you yet,” he quipped, stepping inside, a glint of mischief in his eye. But then, when he took in the state of your curled posture and tear-streaked cheeks, the humor slipped from his face.
He sat beside you wordlessly, not asking for permission. For someone accused of so much blasphemy, Anaxa knew the sanctity of silence.
“…Cramps?” he asked softly after a while.
You nodded.
“And exams,” you whispered. “I’m… I’m so screwed. I didn’t study half the material. My brain’s mush. Everything hurts. I can’t—”
You didn’t realize you were trembling until his gloved hand took yours, grounding it.
"Shh. Take a breath." His thumb stroked over your knuckles in deliberate, slow circles. “Pain warps the mind, compresses time. Right now, it’s telling you you’re doomed. But that’s a lie, and you know it.”
You shook your head miserably. “I feel doomed.”
“I’m not dismissing the feeling,” he said gently, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear. “You are hurting. That’s real. But I would not allow any student of mine to be truly doomed — especially not you.”
You looked up at him, eyes glistening. “Anaxa…”
He gave you a soft smirk, but his eye was painfully tender. “Have I ever told you what I did the night before my Divinitas Trials?”
“…Failed spectacularly?”
“Absolutely not. I threw up on my notes, accused my invigilator of divine fraud, and passed with the second-highest score in the cohort.” He tilted his head. “Chaos is the seed of innovation.”
You huffed, a weak laugh spilling out despite yourself. “You’re impossible.”
“And yet I’m here,” he murmured. “Lie back.”
He helped you onto the bed gently, pulling a pillow under your knees, fetching your heat pack and placing it just right. Then, surprisingly, he took off his jacket and draped it over your blanket, as if adding an extra layer could shield you from the weight of the world.
“…Stay?” you asked softly, almost afraid.
His reply was immediate. “Until the stars forget how to shine.”
He sat cross-legged beside you, muttering small comforts as he summoned a soft, golden projection of your textbook pages into the air, slowly flipping through them. The way he read aloud — softly, dramatically, emphasizing the ridiculous and the relevant — made even dry theory feel like myth and magic.
You watched him between bouts of pain, something deep in your chest loosening. You still felt terrible — but you no longer felt alone.
At some point, your eyes fluttered shut. You weren’t sure when.
But long after you drifted off, Anaxa remained. A pale flame flickered in his visible eye as he looked at you — not with pity, but with reverence.
He whispered, not to wake you, but as a promise to himself.
"Even if the world tries to crush you under divine law and temporal torment, I’ll be here — until you’re ready to set it ablaze."

Hi, I like your blogs but I want to ask how to write a flawed mentor? And how about writing reluctant mentor
Writing Notes: Mentors
You can use related tropes as a guide. Here are some examples I found for you:
FLAWED MENTOR
The "Anti-Mentor"
Think they are great at what they do and decide to train others in their ways. However, they are more often than not the worst at the very things they teach, and thus training with them could be considered anti-training.
In some cases, their student will be well aware of how bad they are and simply attend their lessons out of pity. Others will be honest and tell them how bad they are. There are those students who will think they are being great teachers by showing them what not to do.
Alternatively, the teacher may actually be good at what they do but terrible at teaching it. In these cases, they just don't know how to get their lessons across.
It's not so hard for the student to surpass the teacher here, because the teacher had so little to surpass.
RELUCTANT MENTOR
The "Apathetic Teacher"
Jaded, misanthropic, and very likely a Deadpan Snarker, this is the teacher who's been in the job too long. Dislikes students in general — been there long enough to know they're thick and (usually) irritating.
Hates the school, hates the job, really hates the management — but because s/he's known virtually nothing else, s/he still sticks at it, putting her/himself through it year after year.
Sometimes, this person started out as a young, Enthusiastic Newbie Teacher, who got beaten down by rowdy kids and an uncaring system, turning the teacher jaded over time. There's usually one person who will find that their no-longer-gives-a-shit attitude makes them a Cool Teacher anyway, or at the very least an occasional confidant.
They're likely to seek solace in the bottom of a bottle.
It's often implied, if not outright stated, that even their home life doesn't offer them much respite, either.
In pretty much all Save Our Students movies, one of these (if not an entire school of them) will serve as a foil to the idealistic teacher.
If the school is an inner-city one, expect this teacher to be the one to make some remark about how they can't really expect anything from kids with this "background".
Occasionally, an apathetic teacher will be won over by the enthusiasm of an idealistic teacher and will start caring about the students too.
In psychology, these people are called "burnouts."
This kind of teacher is likely to hand out an Extremely Easy Exam.
Apathetic Teacher vs. Sadist Teacher
The key difference between Apathetic Teachers and Sadist Teachers is the former hate their jobs while the latter hate their students.
Sadist Teachers often seem to take a sick glee in torturing their students; the teachers this trope describes don't seem to take much joy in anything, least of all their work.
This is quite similar to the "read a lot" advice we constantly hear. So, you can also go through your favourite stories (literature, films etc.) and learn from how your favourite authors write the character you are aiming to create in your stories. If I wasn't able to include here the exact one you need, you can look through the sources below. Hope this helps & thanks so much for your kind words :)

Batfam stans trying so hard to devalue Jon's interaction with Dick and tying themselves into a pretzel insisting Dick Grayson -- Clark's first kid, Clark's honorary nephew, the boy Clark reassured and consoled and shared his heritage with when the boy's guardian threw him out of his only home for 8-9 years -- has no business mentoring Clark's young son😆😆😆
I can't believe how TRIGGERED these Batfam stans at Dick and Jon. So triggered they compare Jon to a "potted plant". Are they saying Jon is nothing when he's not interacting with their Batboy of choice?? Sounds similar to Batfam stans devaluing Roy Harper and Starfire unless these Titans aren't written subservient to Jason Todd.
These Batfam stans trying to push for neutrality and mask their Batboy agenda by claiming Starfire would have been a better fit for Superman's son. Fiery Alien Princess Starfire can easily help Jon in many ways but to insist she should be the choice, when she doesn't have an emotional spiritual connect with the Supers, instead of Dick who has multiple layers of connection to Jon's dad since the 1940s is some take.

#Hilarious how Batfam stans are so triggered to hate Dick and Jon#How dare Jon have his dad's son-figure as his own mentor#Is this a new development or have I just missed this hilarious take all this while LOL#Jon Kent#dick grayson#robin#nightwing#batman#teen titans#titans#Superman

ive no clue how much our choice of parents in the beginning is gonna matter other than flavour text but its still my favourite part of the story, and i want to do 3 different playthroughs. love each and everyone.
(Ohohohohoho it matters)
I'm really glad you like the parent choice because it's one of the first choices, and I feel like it's also one of the bigger ones. It really shapes the interior of the MC, and I feel like there are truly, at the core of the story, three MCs. The scholar, the warrior, and the performer.
Even when you make choices that are different from your choice of mentor, how the MC views situations has that undercurrent. And maybe in the distorted reflections the MC sees as the story continues and in the choices the MC makes, maybe there is still the person the mentors hoped the MC could become.

I'm aware of how random this sounds
But because rrverse Apollo and rrverse Hermes have a tense and distant relationship, I was thinking about how differently they interact with their kids, and my thoughts spiralled until I thought of Luke.
I feel like an Apollo and Luke interaction would be so interesting. Luke probably wouldn't like him due how May got all messed up from trying to be his Oracle, but I feel like Apollo would be a kind uncle BECAUSE he knows what Luke's fate is (and probably disapproves about how Hermes treated the whole thing).
Like remember when Apollo once said that he would of adopted Frank if he could? I would like to think he would of wanted to adopt Luke too.
Your thoughts?
oh luke DOES NOT have a good impression of apollo. apart from the may thing let's not forget the event that kinda radicalized him was HALCYON GREEN. it's very interesting actually because he sees hermes as uncaring and neglectful but he sees apollo as actively malicious
so he thinks hermes is The Worst bc of his inaction but then comes apollo who he perceives as too involved, in the bad way (he's not, luke who by pure coincidence witnessed two apollo related atrocities before sixteen is an outlier and shouldn't be counted) Lots of wires crossed
but sadly I think bc of that his reaction to apollo would be very,, measured?? like, he thinks he's evil!! apollo would come down to see what's the deal with this kid everyone's making such a fuss about and luke would be very polite and amiable and and apollo would get hermes vibes™™ that he's just acting like that to hide he's scared and uncomfortable and then apollo would leave bc he doesn't want to keep subjecting him to that by forcing his presence. but he wouldn't know just How Much he was lying then and the depth of his Issues
but if they somehow got into a situation where luke gives up any attempt at preservation and GOES OFF at apollo (which he would) apollo would, well he would respond very calmly and pointedly take responsibility for everything which would confuse THE FUCK out of luke
and then he would go directly to hermes and tell him he needs to get down here now this shit is serious and hermes would be like "you know I can't why are you making it more painful than it already is" and apollo would be like "you're being an extremist and oddly stubborn about this" and they would go at it for a looong time.
apollo's opinion on luke's fate is that hermes may not be able to control or change it but what hermes can control is his own relationship with luke and the way he's hurting him right now, that if tragedy is going to happen anyway and you love the one it's heading to, then it's your duty to balance the scales and steal moments from between the lines of prophecy, so that happiness WAS there, even if it didn't change anything. that hermes is not only withdrawing his love but causing more misery to an already doomed person... he cannot stand for it
in the end apollo would end up routinely dragging hermes to see luke bc hermes does want to but he won't admit anything to apollo and he'd be sooo awkward and pathetic with luke and luke would stare at him with disdain and judgement. in the end apollo ends up acting like a kind of particularly forceful family therapist
so lmao from luke's perspective it would be like "this guy I don't like and I don't understand, for an unfathomable reason, took my dad being absent as a personal offense and now keeps dragging him here like some kind of cat who keeps bringing dead mouse and keeps dropping by to give me weekly updates and lessons on godly psychology and politics"
#I sadly don't know how luke's opinion of hermes would develop after getting The Full Picture#the problem is that the hermes of this time is too much of a Coward for his personality and reasonings to mesh well with luke#that's why luke would end up liking APOLLO more lmao at least HE does SOMETHING#rip hermes 2nd place to apollo yet again you never stop catching Ls#apollo doesn't *replace* hermes as a parent but exists alongside him as a parental and mentor figure#that is more reliable and trustworthy and available. so yeah#apollo's utmost hope is that hermes gets better. he would never try to replace him#somewhere along the way luke realizes hermes is NOT fit to be a parent like what *is* this guy's age in god years#pjo apollo#luke castellan#pjo hermes#toa apollo#toa hermes#pjo#percy jackon and the olympians#pjo hoo toa#pjo headcanon

I want to read comics with Steph, from the beginning and all, but for that I will have to endure reading about my nemesis, Tim Drake the fictional character with the most annoying fans in the fandom.
#like my half of my beef is with his fans#that downplay other characters to make him more interesting#the other half is the actual character#i think batman shouldn't have a robin after jason#he fired dick bc it was too dangerous for kids#just to have empty nest syndrome and giving robin to jason#to then be proved that this was in fact too dangerous to kids#he then decided that no more robin#local furry realizes there's a reason for child labour laws existing#he could have gone through grief and character development (something that batman really needs)#just to the tim ruin everything “batman needs robin” batman is a grown ass furry with parents issues that mf needs therapy#and by giving him another emotional support child soldier tim ruined any possibility of introspection and character development#also: this white boy is as interesting as a salty cracker#his highlight is the skater robin stuff#anti tim drake#Stephanie brown#fandom#batman#batfandom#he got pissed bc his mentor told his girlfriend his name?! like wtf?!#he knew pretty much everything about her but god forbid she knows his name

Can we have the Wuwa men of your choice in a platonic familial relationship with a Collei-like reader who's power tends to go out of control and hugs end up being the main way they calm them down even if they end up getting hurt
A Heart Beneath the Storm
Tags: Jiyan x Reader, Yuanwu x Reader, Collei like Reader, Platonic Relationship, Familial Bond, Comfort, Mentor-mentee Dynamic, Emotional Support, Healing, Character Development, Protective, Trauma, Trust Building, Support System, Gentle Touch, Mutual Care.
Warnings: Mentions of trauma, Fear of touch, Emotional instability, Power struggles, Past abuse, Emotional breakdowns.

You had never known a home full of warmth—at least not until Jiyan came into your life.
The wind seemed to carry whispers of ancient winds whenever you stepped into the stronghold of the Midnight Rangers. It was a place of strict discipline and unwavering resolve, but there, amid the fortifications and stoic faces of soldiers, you found peace. Jiyan's leadership was beyond measure, and his calm was a fortress for everyone, especially you.
Having been an outcast for most of your life, your control over your powers had always been a volatile thing. Your resonance abilities were like the unpredictable storm—one second calm, the next surging with energy you couldn't manage. You’d learned to brace yourself and keep others at a distance. Touch was the most dangerous trigger, yet the one thing that soothed your soul was a simple embrace.
It was an afternoon, like any other, that Jiyan had found you in one of your more unstable states, the storm of power surging just beneath the surface. You knew it wasn’t safe for anyone to come near you; the air crackled with tension, and everything around you seemed to hum and vibrate in response to your emotions.
“Stay back, Jiyan,” you gasped, hands trembling as you tried to hold yourself steady. “I can’t control it!”
But Jiyan, in his calm and unyielding manner, was already stepping closer. His gaze was unwavering, his resolve even more so.
“You are not alone,” he said softly. “I am here.”
His hands reached out, and even as you recoiled instinctively, the intensity of your storm only grew. The emotions, the chaos—they threatened to overwhelm you, like a wave crashing on a shore.
But Jiyan didn’t stop. He gathered you in his arms, strong and warm, offering you the one thing you had been afraid of—touch. His embrace was steady, his presence grounding. Slowly, the energy within you settled. The electric crackle that had surged so wildly faded, and you could feel your breath steadying, the storm inside you dissipating.
“Shh… I’m here,” Jiyan whispered, his voice a steady, comforting rhythm. “You are safe now.”
The hug was not a simple act—it was a promise. A promise that even though the world might be full of unpredictability, you would always have a place in his arms, where you could find peace.
You, who had been cast aside, who feared the touch of others, found solace in Jiyan's quiet strength. In his embrace, you knew you had found a home, a family, in a place where your powers were not a burden but part of the bond you shared with him and the Rangers.

Training under Yuanwu was like stepping into the calm eye of a storm. Though his martial art was steeped in the fierce power of thunder and lightning, his demeanor was always composed, soft-spoken, and patient. You had come to his gym seeking guidance for your powers, powers that, like yours, often raged out of control when left unchecked.
Yuanwu had seen many people with volatile abilities before, but you were different. Your powers had a certain wild energy to them, like a fire too close to an explosive device. You feared losing control, as you had in the past, and pushing others away was your only defense. Yet Yuanwu never let you withdraw entirely. He would watch you with those wise eyes of his, always gentle, never hurried, allowing you to unravel your frustration with nothing but patience.
One day, after a particularly challenging training session, you were on the verge of collapse. Your power had flared out of control, and though you had tried to subdue it, it only seemed to spiral more. Yuanwu noticed this immediately.
Without a word, he approached you calmly, his arms extending as though they were a shield.
“You don’t have to fight this alone,” Yuanwu said, his voice carrying the same soothing cadence as a thunderstorm’s distant rumble.
Instinctively, you flinched, fearing that his touch might be too much for you, but Yuanwu did not pull back. His embrace was strong yet gentle, the weight of it not smothering, but supportive. The warmth of his body against yours helped steady your heartbeat. With every passing second, the tremors that had wracked your form started to ebb.
“You’re not broken,” Yuanwu whispered, his hands rubbing your back comfortingly. “You just need time, patience. And the right people to be by your side.”
Your powers, like a wild storm, slowly receded. You felt calmness spread through you—not because of any magic or external force, but because of Yuanwu’s unwavering belief in you.
He didn’t need words of grandiose reassurance. His actions spoke volumes. The silent, supportive hug became your lifeline—a reminder that even in your moments of fear and doubt, you were never alone.
Yuanwu remained a constant, not as a teacher who demanded perfection, but as a mentor who offered the space to grow, not just in strength, but in trust. Through his example, you learned the most important lesson of all: sometimes, the greatest strength lies not in unleashing a storm, but in learning when to let go, to accept the quiet moments in life, and to allow yourself to be cared for.

also when I say that the pitt is deeply invested in the theme of adults w baggage struggling to nurture the skills & potential of other adults w baggage. let us not forget about javadi, perhaps the most potent and excruciating example of this phenomenon. she’s an adult but everyone treats her like a kid except for her parents who seem to have always treated her like a future adult first and a naive young person when it’s convenient to impress upon her how little she really knows. her parents’ anxiety about her future resulting in a young woman with an outrageous amount of technical knowledge for her age and almost no life experience or understanding of herself to give context or meaning to that knowledge. Robby’s comcern about her age and inexperience leading him to bench her immediately and treat her with kid gloves all day. (I mean she did faint but also it was a degloved foot, no one liked seeing that.) the traits her parents pushed for and saw as desirable to cultivate were the very traits that got her sat out in five minutes flat—book smarts, youth. yeah she’s tenacious she’s smart she fought like hell to get to where she is. but for what. she doesn’t know. she’s 20. she maybe doesn’t have what it takes because what it takes (personal motivation, broadly adapted coping mechanisms, life experience, resiliency) was never allowed or encouraged to develop in her. failmentorship at its finest.
#no one should ever be a prodigy.#anyway I really appreciated that she was so effective during the MCI and then afterwards was like yeah I hated this.#I just had one of the very worst days of my life. I dont know if I want to do this anymore.#but you know she’ll be back. she’s invested so much already. so either she’ll develop the capacity within herself alone#(Maybe w guidance from Cassie who also had to do that (equal and opposite w/ appropriate amounts of empathy & perspective; a gr8 mentor))#or she’ll decide that she doesn’t have the capacity and let Mateo support her while she gets an associate degree in creative writing#altho tbh Mateo has enough going on already. or maybe his actor is just that good at seeming like someone who regularly works 12-15hr days#.txt#the pitt#actually wait. it was a stroke of genius for robby to stick her on chairs w mckay. holy shit.#failmentor status rescinded exclusively vis a vis javadi I guess.#I mean still the traits that lead robby to do that are the negative side effects of the traits her parents encouraged in her#so im not deleting this post.

What Are Archetypes And How To Use Them!
Character archetypes are one of the many tools in a writer's arsenal to write believable and universally relatable characters which transcend geography, time, and culture!
Throughout this post, I will be discussing what archetypes are, how to use them, and how to subvert them.
What Are Character Archetypes?
What are character archetypes? Archetypes are kinda like templates that are grouped into categories depending on their traits, experiences, and actions.
When thinking about "archetypes", your mind may jump to the archetypes in the major Arcana which represent different aspects of life! Like character archetypes, the archetypes represented in the Arcana encompass a multitude of various traits, experiences, and meanings depending on the reader of the tarot or, with character archetypes), interpretations by the author!
Archetypes are meant to transcend time, geography, location, and the differences between other individuals to communicate universal truths about humanity.
But it's important to use archetypes correctly! All characters require character development and if you don't use character development or there isn't enough character then the characters are going to be flat, boring, and unoriginal.
The difference between "stock characters" and "archetypes" is the fact that stock characters aren't meant to be main characters. Stock characters are the strict librarian that tells the lovers to be quiet, the mean bully that gets humiliated, or the MC's lovingly dead mom.
They are static, flat characters who are meant to serve as filler. Archetypes are the foundation to create complex, changing characters!
Mixing Character Archetypes
Most characters fall into multiple character archetypes depending on the perspective that you are looking at. Mixing character archetypes allows your characters to be familiar but not cliche!
Character Archetypes (And How To Subvert Them)
There are way too many archetypes so I'm just going to give a quick run-by!
The Caregiver
The caregiver is a character who selflessly and whole-heartedly supports their loved ones. They often tend to fall into the Mentor role, the Best Friend role, or something else. It's common to see the Caregiver as an accompanying character to the Hero.
Traits: Selfless, Kind, Compassionate, Honorable, Loving
Pitfalls: Too selfless, tends to lack growth or goals, a bit too dedicated to assholes
Subvert: Caregiver can serve as an enabling force who encourages the Hero or the Villain to follow all of their desires and will force their loved one to deny any healthy accountability for their bad behavior. The Caregiver can be a shallow individual who has a tendency of nearly abandoning the group when things seem hopeless. The Caregiver can show some selfishness
Everyman
The Everyman is your regular Joe-Shmoe who isn't smart enough to be a Mad Scientist but not dumb enough to be the resident Idiot. They aren't particular ugly nor particularly attractive (but they tend to get the love interest anyway). They are kinda average in most respects.
The Everyman is humble and cooperative but not stand out.
Traits: Humble, Hard-working, Grounded, Relatable, Cooperative
Pitfalls: This is the protagonist for 95% of stories. Tends to flail around so much that the audience wonders why they are even needed.
Subvert: The Everyman tends to fall into the Innocent type. Basically, oblivious as all heck and a bystander. The Everyman could be a secret mastermind behind the whole operation and more aware than anyone suspects.
The Creator
Constantly creative and constantly making something. Their creation can be physical (inventor) or in the divine sense. To the Creator, there is nothing that is more important than what they are trying to make, and they are willing to sacrifice themselves and others to reach their goal.
Traits: Obsession, imaginative, strong-willed, egotistical
Pitfalls: The Creator tends to be unsympathetic and not that obviously relatable to the non-creative types.
Subvert: Actually try and make this Mad Scientist or God relatable. Many people have that one thing that they would sacrifice their time and life for whether that be their job, their family, their identity, or their creative pursuits. Connecting that creation to these universal truths will turn your one-dimensional character into a tragedy or masterpiece.
The Explorer
They want to break boundaries, take risks, and travel the world for something new. They yearn for something more than a normal life. They want to find their purpose and they don't believe their purpose lies in the mundane life everyone wants them to live.
Traits: Courageous, independent, nonconforming, driven, curious
Pitfalls: Explorer types tend to be the garden-variety " I want to explore this place". Highly common protagonists.
Subvert: Have the Explorer be a little bit lost in the world. They aren't courageous about their desires and they don't even really know what they want. They just know they don't want to spend the rest of their life here. They are afraid of stagnation. They are afraid of looking back on their life and only being able to feel regret. Make it spiritual. Make it about fear.
The Hero
The Hero rises to the challenge. They can't or refuse to stand by any longer to the injustice surrounding them. They fight the villains.
Traits: Honorable, Justice-Orientated, Strong
Pitfalls: One-Dimensional. "really? another story about Superman going rogue and killing people because angst?"
Subvert: At this point, having a character who is genuinely a good person who wants to try and be a good person is a subversion. Seriously, if you can only write an interesting character when they are evil or "morally complicated", they you are putting yourself in a box. They aren't perfect but they try. That's the thesis statement for heroes.
The Innocent
The Innocent is defined by their unending optimism and naivety with a child-life attitude (if they aren't an actual child). The Innocent tends to be the starting place for a character who will eventually have their comfortable life radically shifted by worldly events until their ignorance is swept away from them.
Traits: Trusting, Loving, Sincere, Open, Powerless, Oblivious
Pitfalls: So innocent to the point where they are obnoxious and not relatable to anyone above the age of 7. "Why is a man who has the ignorance of a child the Chosen One?"
Subvert: What if the Innocent isn't this childish person but actually acts serious? A story could have a character going on this journey to become the Innocent in an effort to get rid of their memories of the horrors of life that they have deemed unbearable. And they succeed. The Innocent could be someone whose naivety about the world often has them acting in cruel and insensitive ways.
The Lover
Ranging from the hedonistic players to the dreamy romantics, Lovers are guided by their heart. Like Creators, they also have an all-consuming obsession and dedication, although, in this case, the object of their obsession is the receiver of their love whether that be a person or an object.
They often overlap with the Caregiver.
Traits: Devoted, compassionate, caring, protective
Pitfalls: They often tend to be one-dimensional and horribly problematic.
Subvert: The recipient of their love could be an object, a friend, or a family member. Their love could also be demonstrated as purposefully toxic as their codepedent traits have the potential to intersect with Superior Complexes, Inferiority Complexes, and/or Savior Complexes.
The Rags-To-Riches Orphan
While not always a literal orphan, the Orphan starts in a state of poverty and unimportance who transitions into a life of opulence and excitement.
Beyond that, Orphans tend to fall into Found Families, as a desire for belonging often reunites them with either social outcasts or the Riches group.
Traits: Survivalists, empathetic, determined, driven
Pitfalls: Another orphan? Really? Wow, you got picked up off the street and became unbelievablely rich? How relatable.
Subvert: The Orphan uses their skills and resources from their time in poverty to secure power, influence, and popularity from the masses as their relatable upbringing, connects to the underground market, and survivalist mentality leads them to be even more cunning and manipulative than the natural-born. The Orphan isn't as innocent and ignorant as everyone seems to think they're. The Orphan falls from their rich status. The Orphan hates their found family and relishes in the opportunity to leave them.
The Rebel
The Rebel leads the charge against flawed leaders and power structures when the balance of society is threatened. They might be the public head of a rebellion, a charismatic outsider, someone who works in the shadows, or just someone whose another James Dean- knock-off.
Traits: Natural leaders, courageous, inspiring, strong, charismatic
Pitfalls: Romancization of rebel groups and abusive behaviors as , more often than not, rebel groups establish a new order that is the same or even worse than the previous group.
Subvert: What if we didn't contribute to the massive romantization of rebel authority and instead investigated how extremists groups can manipulate desperate citizens into horrible governments. Because Hitler was a rebel who instigated a national rebellion. What if we explored the topic of co-option as previous signs of rebelliousness and civil rights are being commercialized for right-wing non-pocs and "rebellious" teens?
The Mentor
The Mentor is the character who is typically off in the corner, training the protagonist with life advice such as "life happens man" and "if you klll a killer, that's somehow worse than being that killer".
Because writers don't know how to write actual wisdom so they copy facebook quotes and look up a thesarus for some "fancy" words
Traits: "Wise", caring, patient, insightful, rational
Pitfalls: "Author! Arthor! This a serious topic with a huge diversity of variables and an imperfect solution as humans are inherently imperfect! This advice seems really oversimplified and kinda biased!
Subvert: What if the mentor's teachings are revealed to be heavily biased and based on misinformation which is reflective of the mentor's upbringing? What if the mentor is secretly working with the antagonist to feed the fledgling Hero with false beliefs? What if the mentor genuinely hates the Hero but is still on Team Good Guys?
