Writing Reference: Soup
Tumblr media
Soup, stew, broth, bisque, or chowder?
Generally speaking, a dish is called soup when it’s primarily liquid-based.
Stews are thicker and chunkier.
But an especially thick and chunky soup could be called a stew.
Broth is a liquid that serves as a main ingredient for many soups, and can be considered a soup when eaten by itself.
Bisque and chowder are different types of soup.
Soup vs. Stew
The main characteristic of the dish we call soup is that it’s primarily liquid-based. Regardless of what other ingredients it has in it (meat, fish, vegetables, whatever), they’re either submerged (or mostly submerged) in the liquid or are blended as part of it.
The first example constitutes what’s often called a brothy soup.
The second example is what we’d usually call a creamy soup (creamy as in texture—it may or may not have cream in it).
But there are a lot of variations.
The dish we call stew may start the same way as a soup, and can include many of the same ingredients used in soup (meat, fish, vegetables, whatever).
Stews are cooked by simmering or slow boiling, known as stewing.
The popular distinction between these two foods is how “liquidy” or how thick they are: a dish called soup typically has more liquid in it than a stew does. Stews are generally thicker than soups, being made up primarily of larger, solid chunks of ingredients.
In other words, stews are thicker and chunkier—and always have solid ingredients.
Generally speaking, if there is so much liquid that the ingredients are fully submerged, it’s a soup. If the chunks dominate the dish, it’s a stew.
Of course, a dish labeled as soup can be pretty thick and chunky.
And, sometimes, cooking adjustments can turn one into another. A soup could become a stew if cooked long enough that most of the liquid boils off or is absorbed by the ingredients. Or you could add more liquid to a stew to make it soupier. The point at which a soup becomes a stew (or vice versa) can be endlessly debated.
That’s because there is no exact measurement or technical rule separating the two. In many cases, both words could be reasonably applied to the same dish. The difference is often simply a matter of preference or opinion.
Broth vs. Soup
The essential ingredient in many soups is broth (or stock).
Broth is traditionally made by boiling or simmering water with ingredients that will give it flavor, such as meat, fish, or vegetables (and often a combination of things).
The primary flavor of a broth is often specified: chicken broth, beef broth, vegetable broth, etc.
For example, chicken noodle soup is traditionally made with chicken and noodles in a chicken broth.
But can broth be considered soup by itself?
Yes, in fact, when broth is eaten—even without any added ingredients—it is typically considered soup.
For example, a type of clear soup known as a consommé can be considered a broth if it is used as a base for the addition of other ingredients but a soup if it is eaten by itself.
Bisque vs. Soup
A bisque is a type of thick soup that uses cream as a main ingredient.
The term bisque is typically applied to soups that have some kind of shellfish or vegetable as the key ingredient.
Classic examples of bisques include lobster bisque, shrimp bisque, crab bisque, tomato bisque, and potato bisque.
While most people agree that bisque is a type of soup, some may distinguish creamy bisques from non-creamy soups in the same way that others distinguish liquid-forward soups from chunky stews.
Chowder vs. Soup
Chowder is a type of thick soup whose most traditional and well-known forms contain clams, fish, or other seafood, often in a creamy, milk-based broth and also featuring potatoes, onions, tomatoes, or other vegetables.
Different types of clam chowder are especially popular in the Northeast region of the US. Other examples of chowder include fish chowder, corn chowder, and potato chowder.
Most chowders are usually considered a type of soup, but their creamy thickness can also result in them being labeled as a stew.
Some people may take the hairsplitting even further and argue that chowder is its own unique thing in the same way that people distinguish soups from stews.

Cooking like a Sailor - New England Clam Chowder
However, a warm savory steam from the kitchen served to belie the apparently cheerless prospect before us. But when that smoking chowder came in, the mystery was delightfully explained. Oh, sweet friends! hearken to me. It was made of small juicy clams, scarcely bigger than hazel nuts, mixed with pounded ship biscuit, and salted pork cut up into little flakes; the whole enriched with butter, and plentifully seasoned with pepper and salt. - Moby Dick
Tumblr media
What Herman Meville describes here is a very famous New England dish - the clam chowder. A chowder is "a soup or stew of seafood (such as clams or fish) usually made with milk or tomatoes, salt pork, onions and other vegetables". Whilst there are different types of chowder, clam chowder is undoubtedly the best known. The definition of chowder varies depending on the part of the country, but most contain clams, potatoes, onions and some form of pork. Some use milk or another type of broth, but this type of dish was very popular on board ships where it was cooked and served in different ways. According to Savouring Gotham: A Food Lovers Companion to New York City, it is believed that New England chowder was introduced to the region by French, Nova Scotian or British settlers and became a common dish in the region around 1700. The chowder grew in popularity over the years and, according to What's Cooking America, was served in Boston as early as 1836 at Ye Olde Union Oyster House (the oldest continuously operating restaurant in the country).
But let's get to the recipe so you can cosy up at home with your copy of Moby Dick and enjoy a nice serving of clam chowder.
What do you need: 1 small onion 1 kilogram of salted pork 2 medium potatoes 1 1/2 cups of water 1 tin with about 200 grams of clams 1 bottle with about 350ml clam juice
1/8 teaspoon of pepper 1 1/2 cup of milk
To prepare:
cut the meat into pieces of about 2.5c and brown in a pan over a medium heat. Then set aside.
chop the onions and fry them in the pan, in the meantime cut the potatoes into small pieces and add them to the onions, cover with water and cook until the potatoes are soft.
add the clams and their juice and season with pepper. Cook over a medium heat until they are steaming.
Add 1 1/2 cups of milk. Heat over a medium heat for 5 minutes.
Add the meat and serve. Best eaten with ship's biscuits or fresh bread, if available.
Enjoy your meal.

Thought it would be fun to illustrate some Amaranthine cuisine from various regions (and time periods). Long writeups under the cut!
Western Kingdom Cuisine: Northern Upper Class
The cultural cuisine of the northern part of the Western Kingdom is shaped by the region's harsh, snowy climate. The cold meant that it was easier to keep food from spoiling, but hard to find it in the first place. During the warmer spring and summer months, food would be collected and then salted, dried, pickled, or otherwise preserved in order to last through the winter. Red meat is their primary dietary staple, and is served in a wide variety of ways, including raw and engastrated. Dairy is also common in all forms -- cheese, butter, milk, and as a component of common sauces and chowders (another cultural favorite, and great way to use up leftovers). Alcohol is also common, with a favorite cultural drink being a spiced, warmed fermented milk with a flavor similar to eggnog.
Northern dishes prioritize making use of all parts of the animal, especially nutrient-rich organ meats and fat. As a landlocked region with few rivers, fish is somewhat uncommon, but not unheard of, especially salted or pickled fish shipped in from the south. Also, as mentioned before, eating animals, including "one's own kind", is not taboo at all in this region. In such harsh climates, turning one's nose up at a filling meal is seen as ridiculous.
When good meat is available, though, presentation can get a little… creative. Or, as some might describe it, obscene. Feasts for nobles often involve whole roast hogs stuffed with turkeys stuffed with game birds stuffed with exotic, imported pickled fish, ground meat sculpted into strange and creative shapes, and other ostentatious displays. If a nobleman's chefs can do something artistic with the meat that his guests have never seen before, it's considered very impressive. Of course, to foreigners, a western kingdom noble's banquet can look rather nightmarish and grotesque. Such displays of excess are generally the realm of the wealthy, but most families will still celebrate with a "turducken" or similar engastrated roast once a year during winter feast.
Fresh fruits and vegetables make up only a small component of northern dishes. Berry preserves and pickled vegetables are prepared during the summer months, but the only "fresh" vegetables accessible during colder months are hardy root vegetables and tubers harvested from geothermal caves. Mushrooms, also harvested from the caves, are eaten in many forms.
Bread made in this region is typically very hard and dense. This "thickbread" is intended to be soaked in gravy, milk, or soup to soften it and make it more palatable. Attempting to eat the bread without softening it is a clear indicator that someone is a foreigner, or perhaps so poor that they can't afford a proper meal. Some "thinbread" is baked slightly softer and intended to be eaten in slices, but culturally, it's still expected that you put some sort of gravy or spread on it so that you don't look like a confused foreigner or destitute peasant.
For dessert, northerners often eat dessert breads soaked in sweetened, spiced cream and topped with berry preserves and candied mushrooms. Berry tarts are also made with preserves during colder months and fresh fruit during summer months, and are associated with spring, celebration, and hardship ending. These berry tarts are often eaten at celebratory dinners at the end of winter and given to students after finishing exams.
Many residents of other territories find traditional northerner food a little overwhelming due to how rich and dense it is. It can certainly take some getting used to. Eastern Kingdom residents tend to find northern cuisine especially nightmarishly grotesque and barbaric due to their cultural views around meat. However, with increased trade and travel over the last few decades, northerner food is beginning to look more like the food from the rest of the Western Kingdom, and some of the more offputting cultural practices like the ostentatious engastrated meatcraft and inedible-unless-softened bread are becoming somewhat less popular.
Eastern Kingdom Cuisine: Coastal Citydweller
The Eastern Kingdom's cuisine is similarly influenced by their climate. The desert that spans much of the region meant that, aside from its sparkling oasis cities and rim of fishing towns along the coast and major river, many residents traditionally lived a nomadic lifestyle. Additionally, unlike the Western Kingdom, they absolutely do view "eating your own kind" as tantamount to cannibalism, which meant that most red meat was only consumed during times of desperation or occasionally during holidays/rituals, though the latter is mostly seen as a weird unsavory rural thing.
The Eastern Kingdom's meat taboo generally does not extend to fish, shellfish, and insects. Fresh fish and shellfish are routinely consumed near the coast, often seared in olive oil and spices and served over a couscous-like grain base, and a salty paste made of fermented fish is smeared on bread in interior regions. Beetles coated in chopped nuts and chili powder and dried, and honeyed crickets are also popular snacks.
Eastern Kingdom cuisine also involves a lot of nuts, beans, and seeds as major dietary staples. These foods are long-lasting, spoilage-resistant, nutrient-rich, and grew easily along the banks of the kingdom's major waterway and oases even before cities settled there. These three food groups are found in nearly all of their cooking. Nuts and seeds are baked into bread and desserts but also mixed into stir fry-type dishes to add protein. A common dessert and trail snack consists of dried dates mixed with walnuts. Dates and figs are also made into jams and eaten spread over bread or as a component in sauces.
Vegetables and fruits, as well as olives, were grown in grand, sprawling, aqueduct-fed gardens in oasis cities and on riverbanks. Cacti, once cultivated extensively by ancient nomads, are served chopped and glazed with honey, another dietary staple.
Dairy, derived from pack animals used by nomads, is also somewhat common, though difficult to transport without spoilage. It is paradoxically seen as a practical, basic food by nomads and farmers, who can milk it directly from its source, something of a luxury by city-dwellers.
Additionally, the Eastern Kingdom's sprawling coastlines mean an extensive seafaring presence. As a result, they have brought back many novel plants from far afield to be cultivated in the Eastern Sultan's personal palace garden. Among these: cocoa beans, which are refined into a spicy energizing herbal drink similar to coffee. "Chocolate houses" serving this drink can be found throughout larger cites, sometimes mixing the cocoa drink with more familiar sweetened cactus juice to stretch the expensive cocoa powder further.
Post-Fall Cuisine: Ironfrost Middle Class
The society that eventually emerged after the fall of the Old Kingdoms was quite different from what came before. Though discovery of ironworking led to the rise of industrialization--processed food and automated canning, among other innovations-- the harsh, permanent winter that eventually consumed most of the continent meant that cuisine never reached the levels of decadence it had in the Old Kingdoms. This is especially true of the working class in Ironfrost, whose rather dreary cuisine is shown here.
Limited accessibility of fresh fruits and vegetables--grown in engineered greenhouses or shipped in from the far south over increasingly long distances as the cold spread southward--meant that nearly all vegetables are eaten canned. Many, especially those in rural northern towns that lacked greenhouses, may have never even seen a fresh tomato or head of lettuce before. (The City of the Sun produces fresh fruit and vegetables for the far north--including exotic apples in nigh-extinct Old Kingdom varieties--but cutting a trade deal with the reclusive city-state can be difficult due to the whims of its elusive cultish leader.)
The one exception? Mushrooms. Like the Western Kingdom northerners that lived there before them, Post-Fall societies came to rely heavily on harvesting edible mushrooms from the geothermal caves below the tundra. Mushrooms are a crucial dietary staple and can be roasted, pickled, fried, pureed, or even candied. Many of the more specialized cooking styles such as candying were passed down by survivors of the fallen Western Kingdom, thought the passage of time and changing availability of spices and other ingredients have rendered many recipes quite different from their ancestors.
Fresh meat is easier to access and easier to preserve with minimal loss of taste or texture thanks to the frigid weather providing easy "refrigeration" by way of outdoor iceboxes. However, a whole, freshly-cooked roast is still considered a rare treat for most, especially for the mine and factory workers living within the dense industrial labyrinths of Ironfrost. Canned and dried meats are popular due to being less sensitive to spoilage when kept indoors or transported across different climates.
Overall, the heavy reliance on dried and canned food means that most available ingredients are ugly, mushy, and lacking in natural taste due to the extensive preservation process. As a result, stews, loafs, and casseroles are common, as well as jellied aspic dishes. Any manner of preparation that can hide the appearance of limp, shriveled vegetables or disguise the taste of eating the same salted meat every day is useful. Creative meat presentation, such as sculpting ground meat into fun shapes, decorated meatloaf, and ornate aspic molds is another cultural holdover passed on by Western Kingdom survivors, though in the current day it's associated more with the middle or lower middle class rather than nobility. It is now more of a way to make the most out of poor circumstances than to impress fellow nobles at parties.
(Side note, not pictured: Modern day Ironfrost elite tend to favor very plain dishes made out of fresh food, garnished with sliced fruit--the mere fact that they can access such exotic fare makes their wealth self-evident! An aspiring elite with limited funds can choose to rent a bowl of Sun City apples or even an elusive pineapple to impress party guests instead.)
One of the few pieces of Eastern Kingdom food culture that survived to the present day is chocolate, though like Western Kingdom dishes, it is now quite different from its original form. These days, cocoa is blended with fat and sugar and eaten as a dessert: chocolate. This has caused its popularity to explode. Chocolate bars are incredibly popular for their delicious taste and portability, and cakes and cookies made with chocolate are coveted by the poor and wealthy alike. Of course, the cold climate means that cocoa beans can only be grown in specialized greenhouses, and the owners of these greenhouses are keen to charge a premium for access. Ironfrost and The City of the Sun are the two major cocoa producers and it's not unheard of for Ironfrost soldiers to bully smaller cocoa growers out of business to maintain their near-monopoly. Still, hidden cocoa grows scattered around the tundra ensure that a large supply of "bootleg" chocolate remains on the menu--just don't get caught with it in Ironfrost territory.

Trout chowder
Puree 1 sweet onion with some vegetable oil in blender until all smooth. Ok to add a spoonful or two of water if necessary, but use as little as possible.
Pour into hot 2qt saucepan and cook until translucent, stirring occasionally.
Meanwhile, cube some Yukon gold potatoes (about 3 per person you are serving)
When the onions are ready, add the potatoes and stir until the potatoes are all covered in onion puree. Add a little more oil if needed to prevent sticking.
Add some white wine (maybe a half cup?) and some Worcestershire sauce (a spoonful or two, to taste). To the blender bucket, add a little water to rinse the onions stuck in the blender and pour into the pot (just enough to about half cover the potatoes). Add a teaspoon salt, and three or four springs of fresh thyme. Bring to gentle boil, stir well, put on the lid, turn heat to low, let simmer 15 minutes. (No stirring, no peeking: keep the steam in the pot).
Then add 1 lb cubed fresh raw steelhead trout (or salmon, or similar) on top of potatoes, put lid on and steam just until fish is cooked (5 to 10 minutes). Take off the heat.
Add fresh ground black pepper, and some heavy cream (optional). Stir gently to avoid breaking up the fish, taste and adjust salt, pepper, Worcestershire to taste. Remove thyme stems. Ladle into bowls & serve with crusty bread and/or crackers.

food in the wasteland
this post is inspired by @newvegascowboy 's post on food in the wasteland (go check it out if you haven't read it, its wonderful), and it got me thinking, much of the world in fallout has one characteristic, in one way or another, there is always some group grasping onto the past, and i wondered how that could affect food
lots of folks hold recipes and family tradition close, and at the end of the world that's all some folks have, and with that thought i started wondering how culture would affect food and food would affect culture
a couple notes first, if yall will humour me
i wont be covering fallout 76 or prime (for now) as i have next to no knowledge of them
the Nuka world dlc will get its own post because of unique circumstance within the setting

HANK AND CARLY WEDDING QUESTIONS
@exoticb-utters @thealmightyemprex @water-god19 @a-roguish-gambit @justanotherconfusedman @knivxsanddespair
Tumblr media
Imagine what music they would have? What food? Would it be outside? What kind of theme, if any, would they have?
Carly is a romantic storyteller, and when you pair her love for folklore, fairy tales  and fantasy literature and movies with Hank’s love for the works of William Shakespeare, a Medieval-Renaissance Inspired Fairytale Wedding makes more than sense for the two.
The ceremony and reception are held in an old vineyard/winery/cidery located in the village of Jeffersonville, Sullivan County.
A gazebo outside provides the altar, while the interior of the winery serves as the main place for the reception.
The music would be provided by playing recording albums of Medieval and Renaissance music ensembles.
The food would be a banquet planned by Gambit, inspired by medieval and renaissance cuisine: Mixed Pickles, Cruste Rolle, Cabbage Chowder and ‘Departed’ Creamed Fish as Starter Snacks; Root Vegetable Soup, Spit Roasted Steak, Mushroom Pasties, Lamb Stew, Roasted Quail and Roasted Pork Shoulder and Shanks as Main Courses; Cherry Pottage, Rose Pudding, Cream Custard Tart and Walnut with Honey Ice Cream for Desserts, all accompanied by Mulled Wine and Cider.
Who would they invite?
Hank’s parents, Carly’s father, their mutual friend Alec Bohlson, Carly’s closest friends from her time as a patient from the Hospital for the Blind and her theater and puppetry work, and Hank’s friends he met in his adventures with the X-Men.
What season is it? Day or night? What colors do they wear?
During springtime,  in the month of May, with the ceremony starting by day and the reception going till night time before the newlywed couple travels for their honeymoon on the next day. Blue and green are the predominant colors for decoration and party clothes, but there are elements of rainbow sprinkled throughout, specially in the flower arrangements.
Is it traditional or do they do something wild?
The ceremony is traditional, while the reception includes outside picnic games as less traditional forms of entertainment: a Three Legs Race, a Potato Sack Race, a Tug of War, Horseshoes and a Treasure Hunt.
Did they write their own vows? Who is the person marrying them?
They choose to exchange the traditional catholic wedding vows, and they are wed by the German monk Brother Johann, a friend of Kurt Wagner.
Are they wearing suits? Dresses? Something else entirely?

What does their cake look like if they have one?
The wedding cake would be Naked Gingerbread Cake with Mascarpone Cream Cheese Frosting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Does she throw the bouquet for someone to catch or does she pass out one flower to everyone to let everyone know they are worthy of love?
Carly passes one myrtle branch to every guest to show everyone is worthy of love.
Do they have a party afterwards? What music?
Yes, they have a party that starts with a collective Maypole Dance.
youtube
Is it the wedding of their dreams or does something go awry?
Their friends from the X-Men take safety precautions so that no supervillain or anti-mutant bigots come causing trouble during the wedding.
Also! How is the kiss!? Do they smooch softly? Sweetly? Passionately? Does he dip her into a deep smooch? Is it a soft sweet peck?
Their friend Alec Bohlson holds a greenery garland between Carly and Hank's faces, and the newlyweds kiss through it.
What is their honeymoon like? Is it a stay at home one? Do they go somewhere exciting? How long is the trip? Or stay at a hotel? Or maybe a cute little cottage somewhere?
They take two months off to travel from Paris to Istanbul via the Orient Express, and from Istanbul they take a ship and sail to the Greek island of Hydra.
Does she take his last name or hers? Do they keep or hyphenate their names? Or maybe they both take on a whole new last name together!
Carly takes Hank’s surname, becoming Carly Anne McCoy.
How many kids do they have? What are their names?
They have twins: Leonard DeForest and Beatrice Constance.
Where do they live?
They live in a two story cottage house located in Bayville, Nassau County.

do you have any trivia or non-plot-related stuff you'd be willing to share about your original characters?? I'd love to know more about them! Arryn is such a good narrator - not necessarily a reliable narrator but a GOOD one imo - and everyone he's met around town/as Lynn the fortune teller seems pretty nice. I can't remember the name, but is Arryn's drinking buddy currently planned to turn up again at any point?? I'm kind of assuming not bc that would make sense plot-wise but also at the same time I'm so curious about his drinking buddy(ies)
(this is tryingahandinholdingapen btw. why does tumblr not let you ask things from sideblogs?)
OH YOU BET I DO
As I continue to write, this world keeps expanding beyond what I can focus on in the actual story and oh boy oh boy once it starts coming it don't stop comin. Some of it is spoilers of varying intensity and/or varyingly far from being revealed, so I can't get too deep into right now, but! Plans are being made...
Also yeah! Herryn! (pronounced kinda like the bird, heron) Arryn's one named drinking buddy! He's a good guy! His siblings help run the local Merchants' Guild and he sometimes lends a hand when things get hectic, but his own passion is artisanal wood carving (and gossip). He'll be back briefly in chapter 13, then he might get a couple scenes after that? Depends on how the rest of this arc and the Selia arc shakes out.
Anyway...
ELISE LORE This may come up in the future, but probably not for a while! While all the Endersons are pale-skinned, along with having white hair and opalescent eyes thanks to the Blessing of the White-Winged Serpent, Elise is the only one with actual albinism! No one's really noticed since, again, all the Endersons are pale with white hair, but she has poor vision and is prone to sunburns, even with the weak sun of the north. She has a personal servant whom she's grown up with from early childhood who reads for her, and when she goes out on the town (which is, admittedly, pretty rare) she uses a cane to help her navigate the roads.
Still! Her poor vision hasn't stopped her from being one of the more athletic of the siblings. She does some upper-body strength training in her free time, and still likes to climb trees, though she hasn't climbed one lately. You're more likely to break a bone after things finish fusing together, after all, and people tend to worry about her.
ARRYN FOOD LORE He used to be very picky about his food but can now eat just about anything. Still, he prefers meaty and smooth textures, with a passionate love of all things umami and sweet. Steak, chicken, and pudding are all easy favorites, but if you want to bribe him, fancy chocolate and coffee is the way to go. They're both rare in the north, but when he worked in a shipyard they used to snag a few stray coffee and cacao beans from the shipments and turn them into sweets. Pure chocolate has some bad memories attached to it... He also likes venison and mutton, it reminds him of home. If you wanna make him cry, soup with lamb bone broth base (used to get it when he was sick as a kid). He also has a surprising fondness for lemon and orange, but not lime. Thinks salted lemon slices make for a good snack (???). Indifferent to most vegetables and fish, but has a soft spot for fresh roasted haddock and corn chowder (has good memories attached to it, again from the shipyard, and from the restaurant where he worked as a bus boy). Absolute LEAST favorite food is grapes. For reasons beyond all of us, they're just nasty to him. If you gave him a choice between moldy bread and grapes he'd ask "...okay, but how moldy?" He has not yet had garlic bread but I think a fresh garlic roll would be a religious experience for him. He generally prefers beer to wine, but prefers wine with most fish (just not fried) and steak, if he can get it. His alcohol tolerance is on the higher end of average, but it's nothing extraordinary. He can be a moody drunk, prone to making reckless decisions.
ERIN LORE Okay I can't go too deep into this because it's spoiler territory, but it is very important to me that Erin was, by all accounts, a fairly Normal Person. Even if he were to continue living in his old world with his old job, he would not be a serial killer or anything of the like. He has an impressive amount of self-control, it's just the things he feels are sometimes violent enough to break the surface. Ms. Harris's lessons have only strengthened an emotional shield that he himself started building a long time ago. Not to protect himself from his emotions, but to protect others. Because he's Aware of the consequences of acting on impulse, thank you very much. He's not stupid. He's not going to send himself to jail to satisfy a fleeting (or very persistent) urge. ...but if he's not getting sent to jail? Well...there's still other social consequences to acting out. (Until there aren't, because you're actually on the side of justice! Right?)
RIÉL LORE ...I do have Things I would want to share about him but they're all spoilers so I'll be a GOOD little author and not give away the game too early.
Just know that Riél loved genuinely and with his whole heart and soul, and he still does.
MISC. Berryn and Mellis have a sorta queerplatonic thing going on and there's an active betting pool around when they'll officially get together. They, Arryn, and Erin are about the only people who are blissfully unaware of this. But if Erin did find out about it, he would bet against it out of pure spite. He's never forgiving them! For good reason! He doesn't need to!
Average mana pool just came up, but from my notes...
The average mana pool is between 50–100, in System speak, though mages can train themselves up to be between 200–300, and some (like Emril) are naturally born with fairly large mana pools. Arryn’s is really pitiful. Spells that would take more than 200–300 mana are typically cast as a group, or using an outside mana source to compensate.
The official colors of the Emor Empire are blue, green, and gold. However, some of the heraldry also has accents of red. The reason for this is disputed. Some say it's to represent the blood the Azure Dragon shed in protecting their lands, while others argue that the Azure Dragon's blood was gold, and the red represents the ambition of rulers in the early 400s of conquering the Kingdom of Izmal, whose colors are red, black, and yellow. While called an Empire, and certainly in possession of vast tracts of land, much of it is unoccupied, and they haven't had a major say in the affairs of other countries since the mid-600s. Still, as they say, let sleeping dogs lie. The current Empress is holding steady, and her crown prince is a bit ambitious, but doesn't look to be rocking the boat. No one is particularly eager to pick a fight with the Empire, even if they're no longer in their prime...unless?
In the far north, permafrost prevents much agriculture, and most make their living as nomadic herders and hunters, following herds of elk and elk-like tier 6–4 monsters called Gražwe [gra.ʐwe] (lit. stone-head) (<- you know you've gone too far when you start making a conlang for the setting). While the leaders of particularly large herds of Gražwe have the potential to become up to tier 4, this is a fairly rare phenomenon.
All I have of the conlang right now is some phonetics and basic vocab, but I'm also kinda working backwards from the names I already come up with to make it work.
Uh, WORD NERD RAMBLINGS:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A few spicy phonemes to trip Erin up with and give him a noticeable accent that certain people are gonna rag on, but overall nothing too crazy. Lots of geminate consonants, a handful of rhotic vowels, and a growing list of diphthongs. Haven't solidified a vowel list yet outside of the basic 5 but tbh I don't tend to do that anyway unless I want to make very specific sounds phonemic for fun and profit. Might or might not do that here (to further mess with Erin). Have yet to decide if all the retroflex are phonemic or not, but I'll figure that out later. Might end up dropping the θ /th/ tbh P.S. in Catheríne's name, the /th/ is supposed to be an aspirated t [tʰ], not a full-on dental [θ], but I haven't found a good way to convey that in plain text...
Mainly SVO (subject-verb-object) word order with head-initial marking. Again, nothing too crazy. I don't want to give myself too much of a headache with this one, so probably not going to have as extensive a case system as my other one (Irázri) for Gershwé's Project. Not looking forward to thinking about numbers, but when am I ever?
CCV and VCC are fairly common, but if it gets to be CCVCC one of the consonants adjacent to the vowel tends to turn into a semi-vowel.
Forgot to include it in the screenshots, but —is endings on names are generally feminine, while —(r)yn endings are generally masculine. Again, early stages, haven't decided if it'll be a full-on noun class system yet (maybe at least a little? Or maybe something like English where we used to have gendered noun classes but then stopped but some things got fossilized, but that might get back into headache territory so uhhhhh)
Need some more vocab before I can come up with a good name for it. Also need to decide how much sound-shifting I wanna do...definitely not as much as Irázri, since the language/time barrier isn't really as much of a story/character focus here, but it might be fun for future naming and misunderstandings!
Still need to build a basic grammar before I can start making complex sentences but hey, it's something!
So, if you made it all the way through that, uh, congrats! You get some practice sketches! Including me finding out that the Maned Rat is a real animal that actually exists and instantly incorporating it into my image of the Dire Rats, me before deciding that the White Winged Serpent should get more than 1 set of wings, and some scuffed first draft sketches of Jez and Em

Note
you could. probably think if some characters are texture eaters and if so which textures they would prefer or what reactions they'd have over disliked textures
@kimdokjafan replied
I would love to hear what you have to say about the party's food preferences! Things like favorite food, things they dislike/won't eat
i started answering this anon and then got this reply, so i'll combine them. got really long lol, food is such a complex topic!
bonnie enjoys the multi-textured fish head, so they're probably big on texture! i think they're starting to have enough cooking experience to get put off when a texture isn't correct. like the problem isn't the texture itself but rather that rice should not be like that, they overcooked it, yuck, ugh! they would probably make a new batch if possible. however, they're also used to eating what you have because it's all you have — sometimes the nice neighbor drops off her shitty mac n cheese and it's better than nothing, or you mix up salt and sugar for today's bread but you're almost out of flour — so they'll try to come up with a new use for the fucked-up batch where the weird texture works better, or just eat it themself. unpleasant, but better than serving it to someone else or wasting it! as for what they enjoy the most: lots of different textures mixed together, like a salad or deluxe burrito. and chewy things!
we know bonnie's favorite foods are pineapple, rice, and samosas. i'd say they love sweet things as most kids do, but they're really starting to prefer a little more complexity to their sweet treats, like the tart acidity of pineapple. rice is a great favorite bc it's a comforting plain staple, but it can also be used in such a variety of dishes, as the entire base or to add texture! bonnie likes spicy, sour, etc... bring on the flavor! honestly i don't think there's many ingredients they don't like, it's more often a case of that flavor doesn't go there, why would you do that??? maybe they haven't grown into bitter vegetables yet.
siffrin also likes the fish head, so they really enjoy a fun texture, and they like trying new foods as they travel — but when they don't like something they hate it. but they also hate to raise a fuss! so if they're eating with other people, they'll try to just eat around the offending element without making it too obvious that's what they're doing, and then claim they're just not that hungry. if they're by themself, they'll spit it out and rinse out their mouth and eat something crunchy. they don't like tomatoes, which is convenient bc they also don't like when sandwich bread gets soggy at all. they don't like mushrooms or caramalized onion. they enjoy super crunchy things and a nice thick soup!
we know malanga fritters are presumably his favorite. i think he likes mashed potatoes too. fish, of course, and hearty stews. he loves clam chowder! he used to be a big sweet pastries fan, but post-canon he pivots to fruity sweetness bc he can't stand caramel-marshmallow-candy sweetness anymore, and even fruit's on thin ice. most of his disliked foods are about the texture, not the taste. but he's also really sensitive to associations - if he coincidentally gets sick after eating something, eats something badly seasoned, etc, it'll put him off of that taste for a while even if he doesn't remember why.
iirc isabeau wasn't into the fish head. he likes simpler and more predictable foods! he gets yucked out by overripe fruits, but luckily it's usually pretty easy to tell if a fruit will be good. if he does accidentally bite into a bad one, he makes a face and swallows it as quickly as possible, and asks if anyone else wants the rest before he donates it to the local wildlife. he likes fluffy breads and nuts! he's the kind of guy to pack a stack of pb&js and an apple for lunch every day, just buying a different flavor of jam each time he runs out. he doesn't like anything too spicy or bitter! probably a cheese fiend too.
mirabelle isn't super particular about textures, but she is pickier about tastes; she doesn't like a couple common vegetables, like green beans and cooked carrots, and a couple common sauces, like mustard and marinara. she doesn't like nuts, but sometimes eats them anyway because they're so popular in dormont's house for some reason and she gets tired of refusing to eat them, and now she sorta hates them even more but also will absentmindedly stand there munching on them? in general if she doesn't like a food she's served she'll still try to eat enough to be polite, but sometimes can't manage it. some foods she loves are honey, olives, and apple pie. she does love plums too, but it's less that they're objectively her favorite taste and more that they're her thing. it's fun having a thing!
odile likes delicate textures like flaky pastries and watermelon, and doesn't like purely glop-based foods like oatmeal, though it's tolerable with a crunchy topping. she really enjoys a good meat, like a nice herby steak or buttery pork belly. she doesn't dislike sweets, but she doesn't indulge in them in often; when she does, she prefers lemony desserts or bitter chocolate. she finds most foods tolerable at least, and especially likes sharp flavors, like vinegar and vodka!

Part Two: It Feels Like Home - The Weave and the Vines
TAGS: Tooth-rotting fluff, Feelings realization, cooking, surprises, homesickness Summary:A serendipitous opportunity presents itself to Sagora, giving her an idea to surprise Gale. His reaction is nothing short of unexpected.
Words: 1,372 | Link: AO3 -----------------------------
You have no clue how they got it, but you were buying it.
He’s going to love this. Sagora thought.  Somehow, this tiny fishing village on the banks of the Chionthar had Waterdhavian Whitefish. So far from Baldur’s Gate and the trade routes, yet they managed to get a decently sized catch imported. They were indeed fresh. Her connection to nature, and the uncanny ability to survive, offered her a keen nose and eye for quality. One can’t simply consume everything in the wild and not worry about safety. She exchanged her coin for the entire tray, and an assortment of other herbs, spices, and vegetation. She could hardly contain her excitement. It was to be a surprise after all.
Back at camp, Gale was already stoking the fire to begin making their evening meal.  Sagora ran over with her hands overloaded with her haul. “Gale!” She huffed as she nearly dropped one of her bags.
“Whoa there!” He chuckled at how adorably clumsy she was as he braced his hands on the bag to keep it from tumbling over. “What’s all this??” “I want to cook tonight. I found some wonderful ingredients, and…well, let’s just say I was inspired!” She flashed a silly grin hoping he wouldn’t question her further. “Ha! Well, I suppose if you’re that keen on tonight’s meal prep then by all means. I’d be delighted to offer my two very helping hands, however.” He smirked, offering his hands in an animated gesture.
“No!” Gale reeled back at Sagora’s sudden outburst. “Uhh, I meannn… no . No thank you. Truly appreciate it though! You should relax or…read a tome or…something?” She grinned again hoping to mask how awkward she felt. She hurriedly set her bags down, and began to gently push Gale away from the campfire, forcing him to walk towards his tent. He threw his hands up “OK! OK, I’m going! But do let me know if you require assistance.” She pushed him into his tent and unceremoniously dashed away. “Thank you! Have fun!” She shouted behind her as she took off back towards the fire. Once she was confident he was out of view, Sagora deftly prepared the ingredients for her surprise. One by one, everything was tossed into the cauldron. It would be nearly nightfall before it would be ready, but it was well worth the wait.

“OK, everyone! Who’s hungry?” Sagora portioned out the evening meal so everyone’s bowl was ready by the time they got around the campfire. The smell that wafted out of the cauldron when she lifted the lid roused Gale from the book he was enthralled in.
That couldn’t be…? No. The aroma was so familiar yet so distant. He practically rushed out of his tent to see what she prepared. She handed him a bowl. “Here you go. I hope you like it.” She smiled nervously, desperately wanting it to taste as delicious as it smelled. So far, the rest of the camp was digging in, and enjoying the hearty warmth on such a chilly evening. Gale simply… stared, gazing into his bowl in disbelief. “Is this…what I think it is?” He looked at her, eyes wide.
She hesitated. Was he upset? She couldn’t tell. “Oh, it’s uhh, Waterdhavian Whitefish Chowder.” She recoiled ever so slightly, unsure of how he would react. “You had been talking lately about how much you missed home. I found a Waterdhavian recipe book in that bookshop you took us to the other day. I couldn't pass up such an opportunity." He moved to sit on a log near the fire. He cradled the bowl, the warmth radiating through his hands. It was a very hearty chowder loaded with bits of fish, potatoes, leeks, onions, carrots, and a host of herbs and spices, served with a thick slice of toasted bread. “This looks…wonderful.” He took a bite. A torrent of emotions flooded his being. This was no ordinary camp meal they had to survive on. It was warmth. It was love. It was home. “Sagora…I – ” He couldn’t form the words. The lump in his throat betrayed the stoic exterior he tried to convey. He cleared his throat as he stood, retreating for his tent. “Thank you. It’s lovely.” “Well, that didn’t seem like the reaction we were all expecting.” Shadowheart practically read Sagora’s thoughts. “Just sit down and eat, Druid. He probably doesn’t want us to see how undignified he would be while he scarfs down his dinner.” Astarion chuckled, clearly amused with his own version of events. Sagora took her own bowl, and did her best to enjoy her creation with her campmates. It didn’t stop her from peeking at his tent now and then in hopes he would emerge.

Sagora tossed the dinner scraps to Scratch and Pudge after she finished eating, and made her way to Gale’s tent. He hadn’t emerged since he walked off with dinner in hand. When she stepped closer to his tent, she felt the familiar sensation of magic in the air. Another step forward, and suddenly the sounds of the camp around her vanished only to be replaced by Gale sobbing uncontrollably.
“Gale?” Her gentle call to him was barely above a whisper. He looked up at her with puffy, bloodshot eyes. Her heart shattered. She knelt beside him and noticed his food was mostly untouched. “You know if it was that bad you could have just told me.” Her attempt at humor thankfully didn’t go unnoticed. He huffed a small, tearful laugh, and did his best to destroy the evidence of his despair. “I’m sorry…” the strain on his voice made it nearly impossible to hear him. “I just…I can’t believe you did that. For me .” “You deserve it.” Gale’s scoff suggested he felt otherwise. “Really though.  You have been through so much, and away from your home for so long. It just seemed like the right thing to do.” Sagora sheepishly smiled.
“It’s endearing how you feel I am deserving of so much of your kindness. It should be me doing this for you. Especially after I consumed that necklace the other day…I know how much you wanted it.” Embarrassment crept along his features. “We’re just…never going to talk about that anymore. OK?” Her tone, only partially serious. An uncomfortable silence fell before them. Gale shifted as he collected his bowl, and gathered the courage to speak once more. “This is more incredible than I think you realize.” He swirled the spoon aimlessly through the chowder. “My mother used to make this for me. Often.” His gentle brown eyes met Sagora’s brilliant green eyes. “It’s just like hers. Every herb, every spice. The texture? It’s all perfect .” He sighed, attempting to calm another wave of sorrow welling up inside him. “For the first time in years…I felt… home .” Sagora shifted closer to him and timidly placed a comforting hand on his back as he rode another wave of tears. “I felt like a young boy again. Whether it was raining, or cold, or if I was ill…hells, even if I was just having a bad day, Mother was there…with this.” He lifted the bowl slightly and smiled, but the smile faded almost instantly. “I don’t deserve this. I’m just a silly wizard who made countless errors, and is desperately trying to recover from his bloated ego and vast amounts of hubris.”
“You’re far more than that. Underneath the hubris is a kind man just trying to do his best with the circumstances he’s been given. Even if it takes a bowl of soup to help remind you of what’s truly valuable then so be it.” Sagora smiled warmly, and Gale was happy to reciprocate.  “You had better eat it though. It’s getting cold.”  She teased with mock scolding, nudging her shoulder into his. Gale looked down, and with a gentle wave of his hand, he warmed the bowl’s contents.
“There. Good as new.” He smiled at her once more, completely captivated by her beauty and kindness. He was falling for her, though couldn’t ever reveal his true feelings, not when he wasn’t even sure of his own fate. Life can be so cruel.
