Sundance 2024 Film Review: Desire Lines ★★★1/2
Writer-director-editor Jules Rosskam’s Desire Lines, which just received its world premiere in the NEXT section at the 40th Sundance Film Festival, boldly forges its own hybrid form to explore intimate stories of transmasculine sexuality from the past and present. In the narrative fiction strand of the film, an unassuming Persian-American trans man in his early 60s, Ahmad (Aden Hakimi), is…

I just discovered that there was a person who was afab and ended up joining the russian army by the name of Alexander Durov in 1806.
Born a woman, Nadezhda Durova (birth name) ran away from home and joined a light cavallery regiment dressed as a man.
After his identity was uncovered, the russian tsar summoned him to the palace at St. Petersburg, where he impressed the tsar so much that he awarded Durov the Cross of St. George and promoted him to lieutenant in a hussar unit.
Tumblr media
He always referred to himself as a man and was upset when people called him a woman.
He signed letters with his male last name.
He expressed feelings of disgust towards his sex and how that worried him a lot.
He never married willingly and adopted many dogs and cats.
He only danced with women when attending a ball.
He asked to be buried under his male name Alexander Andreevich Alexandrov but the church did not agree to that.
I never saw him in "historical transmasculine people" compilations and only discovered his story coincidentally.
Unfortunately, historians still adress him with female pronouns, although he did not want that.
Let's remember him together. We won't allow him to be forgotten.
I'll probably add onto this post later or make a better one but you can read a lot on this wikipedia article:

i honestly wanna say a huge fuck you to everyone says that tdicks are gross and make transmascs feel bad about wanting or having bottom growth. this is like. one of the most desired effects of testosterone amongst the vast majority of transmascs i meet. so many trans men i've known have been clawing and foaming at the mouth to have a tdick, and had their bottom dysphoria severely lessened or straight up have seen it go away because of bottom growth. no part of HRT is "gross" or "ugly" or "disgusting"- for every effect of HRT, yes even baldness, there is someone on this planet who wants that.
i don't care if you wouldn't want that for your body, there's no good reason to make trans people feel bad about the bodies we want and desire for our bodies. that's literally just transphobia. i hope you know this. telling trans men that our bodies will become "ugly" and "disgusting" is transphobia. being disgusted by trans bodies is transphobia. being disgusted by testosterone and its effects is transphobia.
also it's just not true. tdicks are so fucking hot. bottom growth is so fucking sexy. watch a transmasc pull down their pants and see that massive thang in action. that shit changes you for the better for life.

If you’re someone who believes that AntiTransmasculinity doesn’t exist then allow me to show you some examples.
This is the shit I experience as a gay trans man. My life is not “easier” because I am FTM.

HEY YOU!
Yeah, you! Are you trans? Do you like reading books? Or watching movies?
Do you like media about trans men/transmasculine characters but don't know where to find it?
That's sooo crazy because I have this little spreadsheet I'm working on where I'm trying to document all media with protagonists/major characters who are FTM or transmasculine.
The spreadsheet currently has 200+ entries spread across the following categories:
Books
Manga
Memoirs and non-fiction
Movies
TV Shows
Graphic novels / Comics
Webcomics
Audio dramas
Books and movies are also sorted by:
Which character is trans (MC, love interest, antagonist, etc)
If the trans character is POC
The trans character's sexuality (Because I saw lots of transhet guys sad about only being able to find gay romances)
If the author/actor is also trans (if we know for sure)
It's free to use, and free to add to as well! Editing permissions are on, and I check on the spreadsheet every now and then to make sure everything is in order and to clean up.
If you know something that isn't on the list, please add it! You don't have to fill in every single column, but fill it to the best of your abilities.
If you don't want to use the big ass long link below, you can also use: bit.ly/FTM-protags
I made this because I want it to be a community resource. So even if you're not a trans guy or transmasculine person, please reblog!

gay trans men: isn’t it fucked up that so many cis gay men proudly talk about how disgusting they think our bodies are, get violent when they realize they were attracted to one of us, push us out of community spaces because they don’t think we belong there, invalidate the orientation of the cis gay men who enter into relationships with us, accuse us of raping the cis gay men we’ve had sex with, aggressively misgender us and make assumptions about our bodies, act like their personal lack of desire to be with us means we must be fundamentally unattractive and morally reprehensible, and generally treat our existence like a personal attack worthy of a violent response when all we’re trying to do is exist?
those cis gay men & their friends: oh my god, you’re literally trying to force your disgusting female pussy onto gay men! this is conversion therapy! you’re a predator and a rapist and you deserve to die!
gay trans men: …we literally do not care if you have sex with us. nobody said anything about that. a lot of us are t4t, asexual, and/or already in a relationship, and the rest of also don’t want to have sex with you that badly because we would much rather be fucking someone who actually likes us; this has never been about who we personally want to sleep with. we’d just really appreciate it if you could treat us like human beings and not actively try to make the gay community hostile toward our existence. you don’t have to be attracted to us, just don’t be awful to us? and maybe, once you have that part down, ask yourself why you were so quick to assume a subset of queer people are all violent predators?
those people: HOMOPHOBES! EVIL GROSS FETISHIZING RAPIST HOMOPHOBES!

Fuck It
I’m a trans man not on T, with no current plans to get on T. And that’s so fucking valid of me actually. Fellow trans mascs not on T for literally any reason, whether it’s safety, financial or personal, you are so valid and loved. I am giving you a hug. Or an affectionate high five if you would prefer.

The thing is, when I entered some queer spaces irl, when I wasn't even approaching passing yet, people made fun of trans men's genitals to my face under the guise of "punching up". I was expected to "bare the responsibility of choosing the patriarchy," when keep in mind, I hadn't even cut my hair or bought new clothes yet. I was constantly lectured about the basics of my own transition and treated like a child by people much younger than me. I'd been told I was going to become a completely different person on testosterone, an angry monster, because they knew someone, "it happened to before." People were uncomfortable using he/him pronouns for me and used they/them instead. I was told I would be better as a lesbian, and some wlw tried to persistently sleep with me, telling me they saw me as a woman the whole time.
None of this is good faith feminism, it's not "women venting", it just can't be. It simply can't be.

Hi! I wrote a medium article!
If you've been at all interested in what I've been posting about historical sex work and FTM crossdressing, that's what this is about. I go over three examples of this in ancient Greece, Renaissance Venice, and 19th-20th-century San Francisco, and talk a bit about my thoughts on how these stories tie in to transmasculine erasure (& specifically the erasure of gay transmasculinity).
