Literally! And hypocrites too.

Because there is a literal revolution against the patriarchy in front of them. Cuz queerness is anti-patriarchal at it's core of it's definition, which is literally going again the cishet, perisex, allorose, monogamous and Christian standart of how people should behave.

What normal feminists would do? “Oh look, they are deviants! Hi I want to apologize for taking so long to respond, I wanted to get my thoughts together, to answer this properly. This’ll be long.

First, it is important that I define to you what exactly I know and see two-spirit as/to be. I’ll start with the definition from wikipedia: “Two-spirit (also two spirit, 2S or, occasionally, twospirited) is a modern, pan-Indian, umbrella term used by some Indigenous North Americans to describe Native people in their communities who fulfill a traditional third-gender (or other gender-variant) ceremonial and social role in their cultures.”

What I know the usage of the term two-spirit to be, yes, it is quite an umbrella term. I find it used all over Canada and America by Indigenous youth who identify as trans, AND by those who are LGB. As it is in usage now, it seems to just be the catch-all for any GNC or LGB indigenous kid. A label. And although I do think it’s wonderful for any LGB or T-identified or gender non-conforming Indigenous child to find a label that makes themselves comfortable and makes it easier to find others who have the same life experiences, I also think it’s wrong.

The intention of Two-spirit is meant, as we see in the wiki definition, as a catch-all describer of “traditional third-gender, ceremonial and social role in their cultures” for anybody who is North American indigenous. Anon I’m sure you know already but for those that don’t, our roles, typically, are heavily appointed by Elders. You don’t just identify yourself into performing traditions, you are appointed it by elders, or else you ask for their, for lack of better word, blessing. But… you’d be hard pressed to find much of our culture that does this for a “third gender” or “two spirit”.

I can’t speak for every indigenous culture as I was raised mainly into the Cree part of my family and not the Saulteaux/Oji-Cree, but in Cree culture the word of our Elders is sacred. Oral history is how we learn of our culture, in part because we were hit hard in the Canadian genocide of First Nations. I can very safely say, out of all the things I learned from my elders, the only thing I ever had to “teach” them was what Two-spirit meant and what a third-gender is. Because they didn’t know. They could tell me what life was like before they were taken away from the reservation, they could tell me tales of creatures, of Wendigo and Little People, they could tell me and teach me what is sacred to us, what our roles as male and female are, but they couldn’t tell me what Two-spirit is. I had to learn that from the white man. Why is that? Well… possibly because it���s not a thing. It’s not sacred. It isn’t part of the history.

And even if it is in any subset of our cultures, all these kids and indigenous youth who use 2S to identify themselves? They were not appointed the term by elders, they label it themselves.

I think it is important to note here that “Two-spirit” itself was a term first (as we know so far according to Wikipedia, so take that as you will) founded and pushed out of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, which is Treaty 1 territory, home to Anishinaabe. I am not a part of this territory (although I have Elder family members who are from Sandy Bay, who I can confirm also do not know of two-spirit) but one quick search of “anishinaabe third gender” will even only bring up modern day Two-spirit ideas, and the coining of the term in 1990. Same with any search for “(nation) third gender.” I have had a very lovely Anishinaabe anon in the past, and she has also vented her frustration at the use of the term, especially as an umbrella term for any Indigenous kid who is LGB or T, so I do take some assumption there from her that it is also not much of a thing in Ojibwe culture or any of the other Anishinaabe cultures.

What’s most important, and why I oppose it so much (other than the fact that it’s just, as I see, straight up a white man-made concept) is that the term “two-spirit” was created to replace other, more offensive words.

It’s main replacement is for “berdache”, a white (French) word, used against male Indigenous men, particularly homosexual Indigenous men. It is a slur. “Male berdaches did women’s work, cross-dressed or combined male and female clothing, and formed relationships with non-berdache men.”

It is, also, meant sometimes to replace the word, Winkte, or winyanktehca. Lakota meaning ‘wants to be like a woman’. Particularly used against, again, homosexual Lakota men.

It is, also, sometimes used as a replacement for Nádleehi, which was/is used in Diné culture as a word for effeminate males. Particularly used against, you guessed it, homosexual Diné men.

Now, to me, I think it is pretty plain to see that this is a term meant to replace some of our more homophobic terms used in Indigenous communities. But replacing homophobic terms with new ones doesn’t make it any less homophobic. These terms were meant to other homosexual indigenous men, and they were also used by white people. For us to, in this day and age when our culture is shifting to a less homophobic one, use the term two-spirit to continue to other LGB indigenous people? That’s not right to me. There was no reclamation of any of these terms, there was just a white replacement word that doesn’t sound as bad. But it still means the same thing. It’s still as white as a Frenchman calling a gay Indigenous man berdache.

I could keep going on and on, especially about how it is used in current day culture by indigenous youth as a special label, and how none of the people using it seem to actually have talked to their elders about it, but really my biggest problem with it is just how extremely homophobic it is. And how white people use it as “proof” that transgenderism has “always existed” when those same white people don’t even bother to fucking listen when some of us scream at them how wrong they are. And then I could keep going on screaming about how it’s been shoehorned as an acronym onto Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women which is so fucking disrespectful.

What's life in Egypt like?

This is a very vague question so I’m not sure how to answer, really. It’s kind of tense these days, anyway.

Ig the day to day is pretty typical. I’m not exactly the average citizen, most of my time is taken up with med school so I don’t explore or go out as much as I should. I live in Alexandria, and I love it here. Coastal, the old section of the city is beautiful, lots of greenery. It’s pouring down rain all through winter, driving is near impossible because everyone is fucking insane (which is typical for Egyptian cities lol), it’s pretty densely populated, the food is phenomenal. We have a ton of museums and historical sites, and the library of Alexandria is pretty rad. The economy is shit and getting shittier, we’re under a military dictatorship (again but worse than last time), inflation is insane and the country is in a ton of debt to the point that the central bank of Egypt has stopped all foreign currency transactions on debit cards, and credit cards have a foreign currency limit of the equivalent of $250/month.

From a feminist perspective, it’s not the best place to be. Alexandria is better than most of the country, but I still get harassed regularly. Egyptian men are paternalistic and have a weirdly entitled attitude towards all women, we have in-jokes in feminist circles about the fruit vendor from down the street being mad at you for coming home late. Tbf I’m fairly open about my feminist opinions and that hasn’t caused me any trouble, and basically all my friends and acquaintances know that I wear a hijab in front of my family and take it off at school/when I’m out with friends, and 4 of my cousins know about the hijab thing as well. Dating culture is fairly normalised in Alexandria, so everyone in my circles including two of my cousins know about my love life (but not my sexuality). In some places of Egypt, I’d be honour killed for any one of these things, so I’m grateful to be where I am. There’s still a line of chauvinism running in the country, though that’s the least of our worries as feminists. From an LGB perspective, unfortunately the little progress we’d made in the late 00’s and early 10’s has been receding quickly. We’d gotten to a point of live and let live in some areas, but the introduction of trans ideology in the west caused a massive recoil in perception of LGB people here, and there’s been a crackdown on LGB-sympathetic ideas. Every time it’s brought up, you get a look of disgust and ‘they’re teaching kids to change their sex’. It’s going to take massive amounts of time and effort to repair this damage.

And finally, from a religious perspective, well. Not much has improved re acceptance of atheism or non-abrahamic religious beliefs. Egyptian law technically protects your right to freedom of belief, but, crucially, not your right to freedom of expression of religious belief. National ID cards must have your religion listed on them, and the only options are Muslim/Christian/Jew. Contempt of religion and ‘violating Egyptian family values’ laws are pretty strict and are used to prosecute everything from girls dancing on TikTok to blasphemy. I don’t see this improving any time soon, though foreigners (non-Arabs) are given some leeway.

Dear it/its users

OK, so this is a speech I've been working on ever since my sister told me that my two nonbinary niblings had added it/its to their list of pronouns. So far, they haven't indicated that those are their first-choice pronouns, so we've kind of been skirting the issue, but I've been getting this ready, because I love them and want to try to help them avoid long-term unintended consequences as they enter the adult world. Now I'm sharing it with you, because doing so is as nice as I know how to be.

First: If I, as a queer elder and active Tumblr user, have the initial reaction of, "Fuck, these little shits are going to get somebody fired with their 5-edgy-4-U bullshit," that is super-important context for you to know in considering taking this choice out into the larger world.

Now, I have made the effort of educating myself, and I understand that many people who make this choice have substantive reasons that go beyond edgy teen bullshit. However, you have to allow for the fact that the majority of people will not move past their first impression regarding this choice.

Being gender-nonconforming is already a strike against you in a lot of contexts--even in reasonably liberal settings, unconscious bias is a thing. Is being it/its important enough to you to add another strike against yourself?

Second: People are going to be uncomfortable calling you "it," even if you've thoroughly explained why you want them to.

This is different from people not wanting to call you by your chosen name, or wanting to call your by the pronouns for your gender assigned at birth, because these people will be coming from a place of wanting to respect you.

Yes, you can argue with them that calling you as you want to be called is the most respectful option, but they will still be uncomfortable. You can't reason them out of feeling uncomfortable, because they didn't reason themselves into it. It's a feeling. They may get over it in time.

But.

If those people do not already have some prexisting love, loyalty, or commitment toward you, that motivates them to sit with that discomfort and work through it, the easiest way out will be to simply decide that--for some totally unrelated reason, that their conscious mind will be fully convinced is true--you and they just didn't click! You don't seem like a good fit for the job, team, walking tour of the Lake District, whatever it is.

Because people don't like being uncomfortable, and if mentioning your existence puts them in an ethical dilemma, a lot of them will just nope right out of it.

And again, these will be people who are motivated in part by their desire to respect you and your autonomy. They will feel, consciously or not, that you have put them in a shitty position where no matter what they say, they'll feel like they're doing something wrong--

And they, dear nibling, will feel that way because you have. You didn't intend to, but you did.

I love you, and if that is your choice I will get used to it, but I am writing this in the second person for a reason.

Story time: I was trans/nonbinary in nine-teen-fucking-ninety-six. The LGB* organization on my college campus didn't know what the fuck to do with me. When I said in "let's go around the room and introduce yourself" time on the first day of class, that despite what the roster said, I was actually a boy called Alex, people got nervous and looked away, and kind of avoided talking about me for the rest of the semester.

(*By the time I left, it was the LGBT organization.)

And then when I was ready to go to grad school, I had professors tell me that they weren't sure how to write me a letter of recommendation, because they knew I didn't want to be called "she," but if they put "he," the recipient might be confused, and if they put "they" they'd look bad because we were in the English department and "they" is plural.

When I got to grad school, I kept "Alex," but skipped saying anything about my gender identity. It didn't help all that much. I got along well enough with my classmates, but all of the professors seemed to be waiting for me to cause trouble, and as a teaching assistant my student evaluation comments made frequent reference to my gender presentation and how they found my name "confusing." (Another grad student, whose name was James or something like that, went by Kip, and nobody gave him shit about it.) I got an anonymous rape threat in my campus email about my "indoctrinating students with my radical agenda," and the campus cop who responded to the complaint said maybe I should, "Tone it down a bit." (Tone what down? I was dressing and acting pretty much the same as the male half of my class cohort.) I ended up dropping out after the Masters, even though the plan all along had been to do the PhD and have an academic career.

Throughout all this, I was a bit more oblivious than I should have been about the underlying pattern behind all this--blame the autism, I guess.

I don't know, if I'd realized it all, whether i would have made different choices regarding my identity and presentation--since my choices were pretty much limited to "present as my gender assigned at birth, or suffer the consequences."

You, today, nibling, in 2024, have the option of being a "they/them," and if you choose your company right, it won't be a big deal--it'll close some doors, but mainly ones you don't want to go through anyway.

Or you can be an it/its, and watch doors slam in your face.

I will love you and support you either way, dear nibling, but I can't make the world love you.

I--we, my generation--changed the world enough that there's a space in it for people like us. I hope you make that space bigger, better, and brighter, but it hurts to think about you dragging yourself through the same shit we went through. We built a path behind us, so you wouldn't have to.

(P.S., For the love of god, please don't get a nonbinary gender marker on your driver's license; the last thing we need is you getting shot at a routine traffic stop.)

First of all, I absolutely hate that this was even on my dash in the first place.

Second of all, 12,000 notes? And the comments are filled with people who fundamentally misunderstand the radfem movement. Every movement has–for lack of a better term–extremists, but it seems that radical feminism is one that is fully represented to those outside the movement by its extremists (extremists being those who spout racist rhetoric, and in my opinion, those who think men are irredeemable/horrible entirely by nature). Not that this doesn’t happen with other social movements, but it’s just interesting that the particular group who dares to exclude men is so willfully misrepresented.

Also love how OP mentions that radical feminism will not achieve “queer liberation”. Like…yeah…it’s almost like the goal of radical feminism is the liberation of women from sex-based oppression. While I believe in LGB rights and stand by the community (I’m about to say something very controversial here), I also believe that feminism should center women entirely.

Anyway, I needed someone sane to see the post and did not want to open myself up to vitriol by commenting.

When she said “men, especially marginalized men, are not your enemies” I burst out laughing. Hunger games moment. Imagine Katniss saying, “The Capital is not the enemy! They’re all neurodivergent, queer, and victims of anti rich sentiments🥺” These dorks cannot handle the fact that women are oppressed on the axis of our sex, and all men have male privilege.

Tumblr is regressing so much into misogyny for a reason, it’s always been the counter culture, and it was feminist back in 2016 when the rest of the internet wasn’t… and now the opposite is true.

The incel podcast/ Andrew Tate era sparked a massive backlash online, and Roe v wade and abortion rights sparked backlash irl, with that being the number one reported issue of voter interest. Feminism is back on everyone’s mind, and this is their sad little tantrum about not being the center of attention anymore.

When gay men, bisexuals, lesbians, and even the people who are questioning and exploring their sexualities communicate the boundary of, "don't call us queers", pushing against that boundary is a form of homophobic discrimination.

We don't like to be called "queer" because it can be a really retraumatizing word—especially for gay, lesbian, and bisexual elders. I wonder how often that was the last word that gay men affected with AIDs heard from someone they thought had loved them. I wonder how many gay men have been murdered while hearing that word, and how many of them had to be strong while hearing their partner's parents call them that word.

We don't like to be called "queer" because it obfuscates our relationships. "Queer" is a meaningless, ambiguous descriptor. It is disproportionately used to render lesbian relationships invisible, especially. We are more likely to see "queer women" and "queer relationship" referred to in the media in association to lesbians than "lesbians", "lesbian relationship", or "sapphic". And one of the core cruxes of the oppression of lesbians is invisibility—most of our history is unrecorded, even in comparison to gay men's. There exists very little research on us. There are less images of us, and when there are they are usually supremely sexualized. We are also the smallest population of people of the LGBQ and even T alphabet.

There are bisexuals out there, too, who don't want to be called "queer", because "queer" now is also associated with the kink and poly community. Bisexual women especially struggle with being targeted for male pleasure, so this word only furthers to subjugate them to being associated as a sexual object or a person with no boundaries.

We also don't like to be called "queer", because the whole point of the gay struggle and gay rights is to normalize people not associating us with being strange or different. We want people to consider our sexual orientations, relationships, and the expression thereof as normal. Diversity should be celebrated because it brings resilience to human systems, and how this diversity is recognized and percieved really matters. The terminology we choose to use influences this.

I understand the intention is to normalize the term and "reclaim" the slur, because as the theory goes normalizing a word makes it so an oppressor using it has no power. Ultimately, this falls flat, because it's not just about the term itself but rather how and in what context it's used. All we do when we "normalize" slurs is retraumatize people who grew up in a culture or time when their safety and security was threatened hearing it. "Normalizing" slurs also just encourages members outside of the given population to percieve us as "other" and often in an unconscious, derogatory way. Slurs carry a lot of associations with them that influence beliefs in nearly invisible ways.

I understand that some of you might be gay, lesbian, or bisexual and like applying the term to yourselves, but there are a subset of us who would really appreciate your help in pushing back against it being used so generally and broadly, to describe the entire community. It can be as simple as when someone else says "queer people", asking them to clarify specifically which group(s) of people they mean. It can be as easy as going out of your way to say "LGB community", or "LGBT", or to name the exact groups you're talking about. I understand the word might be meaningful or maybe healing for you in particular to use, but it can be really damaging when broadly applied.

"Don't," Steve warned.

"What?" Eddie asked, voice dripping with fake innocence.

"Anything?" Eddie repeated as he plopped down into the chair across from Steve. "What would I possible have to say at a time like this? How could I possibly have a comment about the fact that you and Megan already spent several hours making charm bracelets, and now that she's in bed, here you are still making them."

Steve glared at his husband before relenting with a sigh. "I wasn't ready to sleep. Besides, she was worried we may not have enough to make a good showing for trades. I figured it wouldn't hurt to make more."

"Because your nimble fingers work so fast at stuff like this at your ripe old age," Eddie teased. Still, he reached out for one of the colored elastic choices Steve had picked up in anticipation of Megan's arrival. "You may have gone a little overboard in the choices."

Steve shrugged, then swore slightly as he dropped another bead. He left it on the floor for now. He'd clean up properly in a few days. "Better to have too many choices than too few." He gestured toward the large stack he and Megan had made earlier and the notepad sitting next to it. "We're trying not to remake any songs, so here's the list. We have some we still wanted to make that we figured out early. Make some of those."

"Yes sir," Eddie teased as he scanned the list. "You haven't made a 123 LGB yet?"

Steve groaned as he dropped another bead. He had so many to pick up. "We had a lot of ideas, and Megan wanted to focus on more original lyric ideas first. Also, I had to make every single dad related bracelet idea we could come up with."

Eddie fully let out a giggle as he narrowed down his color options and started threading them onto his string. He'd also lost a little dexterity over the years, but those nimble guitar fingers still worked much quicker than Steve's.

They worked for another hour before Eddie stood with a stretch and went around to stand behind Steve. "I think it's time to turn in, sweetheart." He reached out to rub Steve's shoulders.

Steve let out a contented sigh at the action before leaning back, head against Eddie's chest as he looked up. "I wish you were coming with us."

Eddie dug in with his thumbs in a way that he knew Steve loved. "It would be fun, yeah, but with tickets being the way they were, I don't mind. Besides, you two don't get to do a lot just the two of you. And when she was so excited to go with you and not her friends? How can I jump in on that."

Steve offered his husband a tender smile. "I mean I took her to all the others."

"Yeah, but she wasn't a grown woman for any of those. She wants to go with you. I'm happy to let that happy." A mischievous smile crossed Eddie's face. "Mr. Heartbreak Dad."

I think the main problem I have with finsters fans is that they constantly talk down to trans people. like as if they think that being cis and gender non conforming is somehow more progressive and enlightened than being trans.

like, so many trans people themselves are gender non conforming. I'm gender non conforming. I'm 100% a woman even though my outward appearance is fairly neutral. every single one of my trans friends plays around with gender like it's a chew toy.

even if you're only talking about binary trans people who appear and present as their gender, society still sees them as less appealing than gender non conforming cis people.

to conservatives, the far right, and most of larger society, trans women are seen as men in dresses who deny reality and pretend we're women, and to them at least femboys will admit that they're still men. it's the same deal with trans men and masculine women. have you seen the way people talk about trans men like theyre lost and confused little girls who don't know any better? and the way they talk about non binary and intersex people is absolutely disgusting.

when I was transitioning, multiple people, including cis lgb people, told me that I shouldn't transition because I could just be a feminine boy instead. this is an issue that exists within the queer community itself.

I'm not trying to play oppression olympics, or even say that gender non conforming cis people aren't oppressed at all. I'm not even trying to say "you femboys have it easier. stop complaining".
