AD&D changed this to 25% of magic swords, while the rest simply gave bonuses or the occasional special ability like other magic weapons.

Mythdriven Blade - CR9 Intelligent Item

The standard advice for GMs running boss fights against a single enemy in Pathfinder and D&D is to not do that.  Add minions and other targets.  It makes the fight more interesting.

Sometimes that’s just not reasonable from a story perspective though.  But from a mechanical perspective, I find that you can always come up with an excuse if you’re creative enough.  Whether that means turning the boss’s energy spells into elemental orbs that can be attacked and stopped before they deal damage, or treating certain body parts as separate creatures with their own initiative, or in this case, giving the boss an intelligent sword as a weapon.

Intelligent weapons have a long history in both D&D and the fantasy genre in general, and used to be extremely common in older editions of the game.  But they don’t often have the ability to do anything on their own when they’re not in someone’s hand, except possibly compel people to pick them up.  There’s a good reason for that - giving them their own initiative and their own actions is absolutely busted when they’re in the players’ hands.  But in an enemy’s hands, and totally unwilling to be wielded by the PCs?  Sure, seems fine.  At that point, it’s not that different from a construct.

I don’t actually recommend the enemy boss wield this in its hand during a fight against the PCs though.  It should plant the sword in the ground as soon as it’s obvious where the fight will take place.  Drawing the sword from the ground and using it as a weapon again is a last resort if the sword’s about to be destroyed.

The Mythdriven Blade is meant to be a longsword, a fact that's buried pretty deep in its stat block.  A one-handed weapon sized for a medium creature is a small object, so that’s what this is.  If you want to change it into bigger or smaller weapon, it won’t actually affect anything except its AC and CMD, and technically the price, so go wild.  2000 GP of the price comes from the 2 pounds of mithral, so modify that as appropriate if you change the weapon size.  The players can’t actually sell this thing, of course, since nobody can wield it, so the comically absurd price is effectively meaningless, but they might actually destroy it and melt it down into a block of mithral.

I calculated the CR as if this were a monster, but don’t be surprised if your players just pick it up and chuck it out of the room instead of trying to attack it.  It has some defenses against that, but it’s still a solid plan.

Mythdriven Blade - CR 9

The enemy paladin closes his eyes, and with both hands, drives his sword straight down into the ground at his feet.  Waves of radiant energy are cast out from it like shockwaves from the impact, and it begins glowing with the light of judgment.  And as the energy tears through you, you hear a telepathic voice in your mind that isn’t the paladin’s, stating, “You are not worthy.”

SPECIAL ABILITIES

Ego (Su) The Mythdriven Blade has an ego of 16, and its purpose is to be used by its owner to defeat any opponents who are willing to do battle.  Any time its owner attempts to perform an action contrary to this purpose, its owner must succeed on a DC 16 Will save or be compelled to fulfill the sword’s purpose.  This compulsion lasts for 1 day or until a critical situation occurs (such as a major battle, a serious threat to either the item or the character, and so on).  This is a mind-affecting compulsion effect.

Mythbuilt (Ex) The Mythdriven Blade uses its Charisma in place of its Strength, Dexterity and Constitution for the purposes of all calculations.

Wield or Plant (Ex) As a standard action, a creature wielding the Mythdriven Blade can plant it in the ground, allowing the blade to act on its own initiative as if it were a creature.  While not planted in the ground, it functions as a +2 holy mithral longsword, and cannot perform any actions of its own except to speak telepathically (though it can still influence the mind of its wielder, as normal for an intelligent item).

While planted in the ground, any creature except for its owner must succeed on a DC 20 Strength check to pull it from the ground.  Its owner can draw it effortlessly.

Chooses Its Wielder (Su) The Mythdriven Blade has a specific owner.  Any creature other than the owner of the Mythdriven Blade who attempts to touch it must succeed on a DC 16 Will saving throw (based on its ego) or be unable to even touch it.  This is a mind-affecting compulsion effect.

If the Mythdriven Blade is wielded by a creature it did not choose as its owner, the wielder takes 2d6 damage immediately upon wielding it and again at the start of each round it continues wielding it, and gains two negative levels. These negative levels remain as long as the sword is in hand and disappear when the sword is no longer wielded. These negative levels never result in actual level loss, but they cannot be overcome in any way (including by restoration spells) while the sword is wielded.

Planted Daylight (Su) When planted into the ground, the Mythdriven Blade sheds light as the Daylight spell.  This light vanishes when it is removed from the ground.

Radiant Waves (Su) When planted into the ground, the Mythdriven Blade emits a 40 foot aura of radiant energy.  Each round at the start of the Mythdriven Blade’s turn, all non-good-aligned enemies of the blade’s owner take 3d8 damage and are compelled to stay at least 30 feet away from the Mythdriven Blade for 1 round.  Good-aligned creatures take no damage but are still compelled.  A successful DC 16 Will save halves the damage and negates the compulsion.  This is a mind-affecting compulsion effect.  The save DC is Charisma-based.

Cleanse Owner (Sp) As a standard action, once per day, when planted into the ground, the Mythdriven Blade can cast Cleanse as a spell-like ability, targeting its owner instead of itself.  Its owner must be within 40 feet of the Mythdriven Blade.

One that he mirrors when Rogier speaks—an amused snort is thusly added as he glances over at the Spellblade. ❛ Just your sword though, ❜ Vyke says with a teasing look to color his features and a nod towards the sword in question to emphasize. ❛ Without any of the spells you like to conjure right along with it. ❜

Another look down at the dirt face, finding it incomplete, he then adds a nose by grinding his spear in the middle. Once done, he lifts it away to approve of his seeming masterpiece upon the Limgrave soil. But he speaks as he does so, carrying the conversation further with a musing tone to his words, ❛ Easy to fight someone when they are distracted by trying to dodge the barrage of glintblades assaulting them. ❜ A fraught knowledge, for he has had a couple run ins with sorcerers from the Academy who have done the same to him. As irritating as it is to be on the receiving end, to be the one wielding it, there is no better comfort when the threat is at a distance. His reflection is not to pin fault on his friend though, Vyke knows Rogier is more than capable of a fighter.

It’s been said before but it bears repeating that Discworld is science fiction wearing the skin of fantasy.

Discworld tells science fiction plots and builds them from the material of fantasy. Feet of Clay is about robots and the ethics of artificial intelligence. Lords and Ladies is an alien invasion story. Moving Pictures and The Truth and Raising Steam are about the impact of new technologies on society.

Going Postal has hackers. They hack telegraphs, but they’re explicitly hackers.

Hex is made of magic and bees and ram skulls, but it is a super-computer. Discworld is built out of fairy tales and myths and swords and sorcery and a big hearty helping of Tolkien, but somewhere, deep down in its bones, it has a core of science fiction.

I've been so tempted to respec and put levels into faith because there's two faith scaling weapons I want to use but it seems like such a useless attribute for anything other than letting me wield those weapons lol

Looking further at the magic treasure tables in the 1979 AD&D DMG, we see that 25% of magic swords are supposed to be intelligent and have additional special abilities. One thing that stands out from a modern perspective: result "00" tell us that only 1% of all magic swords (1 in 25 of the intelligent swords) have the option of using telepathy. Other intelligent swords that can communicate directly have "speech." This implies that the entire party, and NPCs and monsters in the area, will hear some swords speaking out loud. Today many DMs play all intelligent weapons as speaking telepathically to the wielder while the rest of the party only sees that one character is beginning to act oddly.

Note all intelligent swords add 1-3 "primary abilities" from another table, all designed for treasure hunting and dungeon exploration:

The rare "Extraordinary Power" can make a magic sword into something akin to a legendary artifact, when combined with 3 primary abilities and whatever base abilities the sword initially had from Table III.G:

The sword rules continue for another page with tables and clarifications for alignment, languages, ego, personality conflicts with the wielder, and those extremely rare "Special Purpose" swords mentioned on the Extraordinary Powers table which are driven to defeat a specific class of enemy and are enchanted with yet another random magic power used only for that goal.

Qih'Za, The Demon Slayer

Class: Paladin fighter (Oath breaker)

Romance: Gale (no god Gale, only normal nerd Gale)

Besties: Lae'Zel / Karlach

Qih'Za was the last egg to hatch in her Creche which made some of the other older Githyanki think that she would be a weak child among the others, but they ended up very mistaken as ever since she was able to hold a sword for the first time, she has always shown a clear mastery of whatever battle or training she was in. The problem that always resulted in severe punishment for Qih' Za was her curiosity... Training outside her Creche, field missions, she always left the training of the youngest to find out what was more beyond what her eyes could see and this always caused irritation in the elders, her lack of obedience and discipline were irritating in their eyes.

During her teenage years, she was the proudest point of her Creche, the first Githyanki to kill a demon with her own hands. One of the Githyanki from their Creche was using his magic to try and summon little imps to use in combat and something went terribly wrong causing a flesh and blood demon to appear right in the middle of them killing and beheading everyone in sight no matter if they were children or teenagers. Qih'Za was quick, brutal, almost animalistic against that demon, cutting off its horns, wings, tail, she was hateful and dangerous, almost no longer controlling her body and it was from that day on that she became known as the Demon Slayer, but what was a source of pride and admiration for her Creche and other Githyanki outside of it, for Qih' Za it was a trigger for some kind of disorder in her mind, seeing all these children, seeing her friends and teachers get killed in such a brutal way caused her to have small tantrums throughout her life whenever she was in combat, useful against enemies, but she lost control and always ended up attacking allies and her superiors ignored this due to her usefulness in battle, which always left her with the blood of her brothers and sisters on her hands and even more trouble on her mind.

Against her will she became a dragon rider, it was a "gift" offered by the best and most honorable warrior in her Creche and she shouldn't dare refuse. Receiving her dragon seemed to bring her more comfort... It was strange at first, but she created a great bond with her dragon, her friend, her glorious Agynih. Her first battle with her dragon was something that would never leave her mind... Seeing her dragon, her friend being killed by an Ilith ship, having her body absorbed into that incubator against her will... She just wanted to get out of there, she needed to get out of there.

Even though she didn't have much attachment to magic and even a certain fear due to her trauma, the way Gale showed it seemed to be less scary and more "simple", even beautiful in her view, he was a good teacher, a very intelligent human, there were few big noses that Qih'Za met who actually managed to have her admiration and Gale aroused both admiration and attraction. Even though he wasn't very strong, he made up for it with his mind and spells, he was fast and lethal, his body was firm and concentrated that seemed to flex with each glow that came from his hands and staff. Qih'Za wanted to try him, not just that, she wanted to devour Gale completely, feel his skin against hers and submit him to her.

She stayed with Gale and traveled with him to Water Deep... Even though her mind told her to go with Lae' Zel to fight for the freedom of her people and fight to spread the words of her prince Orpheus, that was no longer life for Qih' Za and now her heart is with Gale... She had been through so much, felt so much... She knew well that Lae'Zel was more than capable of such a mission, that she would free her people and become a legend among all Githyanki. Her companion, her friand and her sister

Some extra information about Qih' Za

She's love chocolate ever since she stole one from a big nose she found sleeping near her Creche, so now that she's trying to find a way to get this parasite out of her mind, she always tries her best to find a few more chocolates.

She's afraid of Raphael and Mizora... Not just ordinary fear, but something that makes her vision blur to the point where she almost loses control of her body again.

She hasn't had a good night's sleep since she found out about Astarion... He wasn't trustworthy, he didn't seem trustworthy and he didn't even talk like someone trustworthy, if he hadn't been so helpful with locks she would have already ripped his head off.

She wanted to taste Wyll when she first saw him, a strong and brave human, strong body almost as if waiting to be touched, but finding out about Mizora made her hateful about him.

Create another valyrian household that escaped Valyria. They hid themselves away by magic on an island not visible to anyone, they don't wish to be seen. On an island with a huge fortress accompanied with another smaller fortress which is basically a library. They are similar to Targaryens, but much more knowledgeable on everything (thanks to Valyria). They ride dragons, purple shades of eyes, silver-gold hair. Only two differences being, they have never been married outside of family(yuck) with no Westerosi blood therefore very different customs, fully valyrian customs and traditions rather than Westerosi+valyrian(Targs, Vels).
