i’m gonna be so real with you guys. before i looked through the tag i thought that hbomberguy was some sort of Goncharov D.B. Cooper. i’ve never heard of hbomberguy in my LIFE before today i genuinely thought this was tumblr’s new made up meme of the week.

So I was re-watching Hbomb's plagiarism video, and I noticed something really funny.

my two favorite pieces of hbomberguy's video were these two tests/rules he has for video essays and making media:

"When I think a video is being lazy, I do a little test. I check what sources the video used... and I compare it with the sources you would get if you went to the Wikipedia page for the topic." (Hbomberguy, 55:07)

"I have a little rule for quoting that other creators seem to use as well. If someone saw a clip of your video out of context, would it be possible for them to tell you're quoting someone and where it's from?" (Hbomberguy, 48:18)

These rules I think can be applied to both the act of watching and creating. If you're creating something not intended to be cursory in nature, where are you getting your sources? After that first wikipedia search we all love to do, where do you go from there?

If you're consuming something, and it is intended to be informative in nature, can you go to a random time in it and understand where their sources are coming from?

"i don't hate asexual people" the ace couple very politely corrected him on the misinformation in his video, and he ignored them, lied about them "attacking" him to his audience, and continued to spread misinformation about the oppression asexual people do or do not face.

"i don't hate lesbians" in my opinion, it is literally impossible for someone to know who radclyffe hall was, know that she was charged with obscenity for the well of loneliness (along with specific details about the contents of the well of loneliness) and yet somehow NOT know that she was found guility and her books were ordered destroyed. for him to say in a video that the exact opposite happened and she got of scott free it had to have been a deliberate lie. in addition, he pretends that queer women constantly have it so much better than queer men both throughout history and still today.

"i don't hate trans people" he lumped multiple trans and / or nonbinary people in with "women", when the fact that they were trans / nonbinary was readily available at the time the video(s) were published.

"i don't hate women" he lied about recieving hateful comments from straight women (or else assumed that any comment he didn't like was written by a woman...), erased the identity of actual queer women to lump them in with straight women who fetishize queer men, and all of the above points also had a constant undercurrent of misogyny.
