*Jegulus lying in bed, after a mental health breakdown*

“How can you still want me? After seeing me like this? I’m broken and ugly and…and-”

“And nothing!” Regulus chastises, and grabs at James, pulling him into his arms, wrapping them around his neck, his leg going over James’s hips and waist. James’s nose buries into his neck and collarbone, hot breath from his mouth sending shivers over every inch of his skin. James’s own arms pull Regulus in around his middle and squeeze so tight they both can barely breathe.

“Don’t you dare talk about my boyfriend like that again, do you understand me? I’m right here, I’m not going anywhere, and there is nothing wrong with you! Nothing that would ever send me running. I love you Jamie, I love you. Shh, it’s ok, I’ve got you.” He soothes and soothes as best he can for the next few minutes, fingers combing through tangled curls gently. Finally, after some time, James’s breathing is even, and Regulus wonders if he’s fallen asleep again.

“You called me your boyfriend,” he mumbles into Regulus’s collarbone. It vibrates and feels warm. His stomach feels warm with it too.

Pulling away a bit to see James’s puffy tired face he answers, “Yes, I did. Is that ok with you? I was tired of waiting for you to ask me, so executive decision, sorry.”

“You want to be?”

“Of course I do! I have ever since the day I met you! It got even harder this year after Sirius proposed to Remus, and I was so mad at you for all those other people you would take out instead of me. But we’re here now, and you’re mine, so…”

“So, you’re mine too.” A statement, thank God.

“Yes. I mean you keep proposing to me, so I sure hope so.” He chuckles, giddy with the words.

“I love you too, Regulus.”

“Regulus. Kiss, marry, kill …” Dorcas glances around at the group, her eyes scanning over Lily, who’s curled up next to Pandora, Peter and Remus sitting together on the sofa, and coming to rest on Sirius on the floor at James’ side.

“Sirius.”

Immediately, Sirius starts laughing. James can't help but laugh too, watching as opposite him, on the other sofa with Evan and Barty, Regulus’ mouth drops open. “My brother?” he blurts out in disbelief.

Dorcas holds up a finger. “No, hold on, I’m not finished.”

Batting his eyelashes, Sirius makes kissy noises at Regulus, whose face twists into a disgusted expression that could curdle milk. “Come on, Reg. What’s a little bit of marriage between family? Not like it hasn’t happened before.”

Peter and Remus start giggling at this, and Sirius lolls his head back to grin at them. “What? I mean, I don’t think anyone’s married their brother before, but there’s always a first for everything. Toujours pur, right?"

“I will shove my wand down your throat,” Regulus threatens, pointing said wand at his brother. “I’ll kill you.”

“That’s not a very nice way to treat your brother and your husband.”

“I refuse to—”

“Oi!” Dorcas raises her voice to be heard, and the two of them reluctantly stop bickering. Regulus, with a scowl, leans back. “Kiss, marry, kill Sirius …” She swivels her finger around to point at Barty “Barty …” who smirks, and then, torn between picking either Lily or Pandora, who both freeze and look at her in anticipation, she flicks that finger at— “James.”

James blinks. He forces himself not to look in Regulus’ direction, trying hide his smile as a rush of embarrassment creeps in. Of course, Dorcas has no idea about them, but just the fact that she picked him for the game makes his stomach flutter a little bit.

Regulus is still scowling as he jabs his wand at Sirius. “Kill Sirius.”

“Oh, what?” Sirius protests, but he’s still laughing. “Reg, really? So you don’t want to kiss or marry me? I’m distraught.”

Ignoring him, Regulus continues, “Kiss Barty. And I guess …” He screws his nose up as if it’s hard for him to make the decision, but James knows it’s all for show. “Marry Potter?”

Looking up in surprise, James plays along. “Marry me? Thought you found me annoying?”

“I do.” He reaches for the firewhiskey bottle down by the side of the sofa. “But I’m not kissing or marrying my brother, and Barty and I have kissed before, so it won’t be much different. Plus, I can divorce you after.”

“Wow, I’m flattered.”

“You shouldn’t be. Your ego is already big enough. I’m not trying to stroke it any further.”

Later that night, when James pulls away from Regulus’ lips, he asks as he catches his breath, “Marrying me and then divorcing me, are you, love?”

“What?” Regulus rolls his eyes. His hair is messy from where James has had his fingers in it. “Oh, stop it. It was a game and you know it. I would’ve picked you for all three if I could, but then that would’ve been too suspicious.”

“All three?” James hooks his fingers through the belt loops in Regulus’ trousers, pulling him closer and pressing lips to the underside of his jaw. “So you’d murder me, Reggie? Is that what you’re saying?” 

“Mm, perhaps,” Regulus muses, tilting his head back so James’ mouth can move down his neck, his arms around James’ shoulders. “If it means no one else could have you, and I got to keep you forever, then yes.”

“You already kill me everyday just by existing,” James murmurs.

Writing Tips:

Write a lot.

Don't worry about mistakes or editing. Just write a lot to get your ideas out. Practice makes better, and writing a lot will help you gain confidence. You don't have to post it anywhere of you don't want to!

2. Try microfics!

Microfics are a great way to practice writing certain ships, or just practice in general. They're also lovely for getting a feel of posting! They're low-pressure and low-commitment, which is lovely!

3. Find people to write with.

Whether it's people online or in person, find people to talk about writing and write with. It's very motivating and helps hold you accountable.

4. Be gentle with yourself!

This is supposed to be fun. Don't beat yourself up or be too hard on yourself.

5. Write down your ideas.

Ideas come at weird times. Write them down, because you'll forget them.

A few years ago I read this really weird fic. It was endgame Jily so I was really excited about it but then they DIED. And everyone thought Sirius was responsible so he went to jail even though we all know Sirius and James are too codependent for Sirius to have helped in his murder.

Marlene and Mary are mentioned maybe twice, Jegulus never happens and you think that there’s Wolfstar but this Sirius gets killed by BELLATRIX and like a year later Remus marries Andromeda’s daughter! That was weird.

Dorcas, Pandora, and Evan are only briefly mentioned too. That means that there’s no Dorlene which was a nightmare. They let Snape be a teacher which was a horrible idea. Also Regulus is literally drowned and then completely forgotten about which was wild.

Barty is actually in it a bit but most of that is while he’s using poly juice to look like mad-eye? Like babes that’s the guy who killed your bf what were you thinking? Also Barty is mildly evil and kills his dad and he also helps torture Alice and Frank into insanity. So yeah.

It was a next gen fic so the main character was James and Lily’s son.

Overall it was just a bit of a stretch for me

jegulus is like a years-long social experiment i keep expecting someone from harvard university to pop out of nowhere and be like Jegulus was a an engineered mass-hallucination for the purpose of seeing if a harry potter yaoi ship between two characters that have never interacted on account of being dead for years at the start of canon could make it to the top 20 most popular ships on ao3

lmao no but in all honesty jegulus is my favorite… if you couldn’t already tell from. the 100k+ words of fanfiction i’ve written about them. they’re the doomed love affair of All time to me. and like… the doomed aspect is very important and compelling to me. not to plug my own fucking fic but this will always be a core part of my jegulus thesis:

He worries that he’ll always wish to be back there, waiting for Regulus’s call. Decades will pass, a lifetime, and the wish won’t fade. He could love a thousand people and nothing will ever compare to the frightening, purposeful way he loved the first time. No one will ever know him so bare and uninhibited as he was at sixteen. The thought scares him so much that he almost throws up again.

it’s the first love and the first end of love that changes you so fundamentally. you can never love like that again bc you’re no longer capable of it. you are a fundamentally different person now bc of that love. it’s this

jegulus is also the love story that wasn’t meant to happen yk? i joke about this all the time but also it’s so serious to me. in a canon setting their love story is always woven through the gaps in the Narrative. they love each other despite the story they’re supposed be living out… and they have no choice but to live that story out! regulus has to take the dark mark. he has to die. james has to marry lily and have harry. he has to die. all in all their love changed nothing about their story but it also changed both of Them so fundamentally. just not in ways that are apparent to anyone but themselves

we also cannot ignore sirius….. sirius!!! sirius might be more important to jegulus than james and regulus themselves. he is the inadvertent crux the accidental catalyst. he would never ever dream of james and regulus falling in love he would actively stop it if he could but he CANNOT bc he’s the reason it happened. regulus and james are only aware of each other’s existence because of sirius. they’re bound to each other by the fact that they cannot separate themselves from sirius.

but i don’t think that james wants to save regulus because he saved sirius. i think james is aware of the fact that he Didn’t save sirius. sirius saved himself. and therefore james understands the differences between regulus and sirius and wants to save regulus himself. he wants to be the white knight rescuing the princess from the tower. he wants to give regulus a better life. and regulus wants that more than anything…. but he doesn’t believe in it. he can’t let himself hope that james is telling the truth bc if he is then it means that Sirius was telling the truth and regulus can’t bear that. it’s this endless misunderstanding……

i think a lot of jegulus fans make the point about how “love isn’t enough to save someone” and while i do think this is a correct statement… the only thing that can save regulus is love. there’s nothing else for him there’s nothing he’s been denied in life except love and connection and if he let himself believe he could have those things…. he could walk out!! james COULD save him!!! love CAN be enough

I'm relatively new to the HP/Marauders fandom, but already Jegulus has a CHOKEHOLD on me. I'm sitting here crying thinking about two characters that probably never met. I'm blaming it on the amazing fic writers who put this ship in my head and pulled me in so quickly.

I saw a post that said "Fortnight" from TTPD was Regulus about James who had married Lily and I'm SCREAMING.

From my own mind, I decided "Down Bad" was James about Regulus if they had a relationship before Reg joined the Death Eaters.

"I'm down bad crying at the gym" - okay James is a himbo and likes to work out but imagine Reg had joined him for a few sessions and was whispering encouragement to him while he lifted or whatever and now James in the gym alone. I'm not crying, you are.

"Teenage petulance" - they were teens when they dated, easy enough

"Down bad, waking up in blood" - okay this I imagine James wakes up in the morning and his knuckles are bloody and bruised because he had either 1) fought with someone because they were talking shit about Reg or 2) he was just so angry that he punched a wall

"Staring at the sky, come back and pick me up" - I imagine they had a lot of late night dates in the astronomy tower AND b/c Regulus is named after a star, James looks to the sky to try to get a glimpse of anything related to Reg

"Did you take all my old clothes? Just to leave me here naked and alone" - okay this one! (the timeline isn't perfect but I don't care okay just pretend) Reg took one of James' quidditch jerseys and so when James is getting ready for a match, he's sat on the bench in the locker room when he realized it was gone and it really fuckin hits him that Reg is gone

"cosmic love" and "heaven struck" - Reg is all of James' stars and the heavens

"I loved your hostile takeovers" - Reg and his friends doing anything bitchy around the marauders

"Encounters closer and closer, all your indecent exposures" - every time they snuck into a closet or classroom to make out

"How dare you think it's romantic, Leaving me safe and stranded" - Reg broke up with James because he knew the Blacks would force him to join the Death Eaters and he didn't want to pull James into that

The moon was shining, the stars twinkling, the lake glimmering like diamonds. And Regulus and James could have never been more in love. They were on one of their late night walks that they liked to occasionally take on a night like this. This one was different though, it wasn't a normal walk, James had some news that made him more fidgety than normal. 

“Would you cut that out James, it’s driving me insane.” Regulus said, gesturing to his hands moving in his pockets. Little did Regulus know that James could not not be fidgety; he was nervous. 

“I’m sorry, I”m sorry,” he pulled his hands out of his pockets, his hands no longer in contact with the square velvet box. 

Regulus frowned, “there’s no need to be sorry.” 

“I”m so-,” he cuts off, “Reg.” 

“Yeah?” Reg turns around, his face moonlit under the white light, making him look ethereal. 

Taking a deep breath, James starts talking. “I love you. A lot. Like a lot, a lot. I know you know that, and I just,” he stops. This was not at all how he intended this to go, but it’s too late to turn back now. “I, just, really, really, love you, and I was wondering, if you would,” He gets down on one knee, opening the box that he’s kept carefully hidden for the past couple weeks. 

“Yes.” 

James stares dumbfoundedly at Regulus. “I didn't even finish."

“Yes. What you say isn't going to change my answer Jamie, yes.” Regulus states, a small smile on his lips as he crouches down to James’ level on the planks of the little bridge. 

“I,” James breathes out, “ok, Regulus, but let me say it anyway. To make sure you're answering what you think you are, and not like yes, let’s go rob some graves.” Regulus rolls his eyes. James smiles nervously at Regulus, even though he knows he has nothing to be nervous about. “Will you, Regulus Black, marry me?” 

Regulus has tears forming in his eyes at those words, something that he’d always find amusing when people got proposed to. But he understands it now. He understands the fact that being so in love with someone brings up so many emotions that the only way to handle them is to cry. That being so in love with someone makes you want to cry at the pure joy and happiness they bring you. 

He finds his voice and leans forward, lips crashing together, arms wrapping around his Jamie. “Yes, yes, yes, a million times over, yes,” Reggie whispers against his fiancé’s lips. “Forever and always.”

Okay, picture this. Sapphic enemies to lovers. Wedding trope. Our MCs are the sister of the groom and sister of the bride. They have disliked each other from the moment they met, back when their siblings first started dating. One is "Miss Priss," the other is "Surly Girlie." Our story takes place at the bachelorette party, a weekend away at the beach. To top it all off, Pansy's portkey got cancelled last minute, and Hermione got caught up in a work emergency at the ministry (at least what I was doing was important, parkinson; sorry if I don't feel bad your fancy first-class portkey got bumped). They spend the first night in their shared bedroom bitching each other out and sleeping as far away from each other as they can get, rolled over to each side and huffing in exasperation.

Honestly this works great for any HP ship pairing. Jily having to work together to plan Wolfstar's bachelor trip. Wolfstar exes-to-lovers planning Jily or Jegulus' trip. Drarry planning Ginsy's. You get the idea.

Pansy's caught staring. "what?" "nothing, granger." there's a pause, like maybe they each want to say more, but instead, pansy just turns out her light with her wand. "night, granger," she whispers.

There in the dark, they both lay on their backs, listening to each other breathe. they end up having a tension-filled, intense exchange where they are truly vulnerable with each other for the first time. apologies are given and accepted in the softest whispers. tentatively, pansy reaches out a hand beneath the covers, drags the back of her fingers gently over the soft skin of hermione's arm.
