You know the first time I watched Nimona I was pretty firmly in the “Ambrosius is being a shitty boyfriend” camp. But the more I think about it, the more I think that if my boyfriend murdered someone in front of me, vanished off the face of the planet for potentially weeks?? and didn’t bother to so much as send me a text message explaining what the fuck happened, probably leading me to believe that I’d accidentally fucking killed him, and then he suddenly showed back up at my job, apparently totally fine, to commit a little light domestic terrorism before booking it the second he saw me . . . I would also probably not be in much of a listening mood the next time I saw him

Nimona broke my heart and made me feel whole again. There’s just so much to love in this movie: the story, the animation, the voice actors (Hi Eugene ahhhhh), all of it delivered into this reimagined (anti)hero’s journey.
Also, I love how all the recent villains are all metaphors for white conservative religious ideologies - while I do miss the gay-coded Disney villains who completely steal the show, pointing out the real harm and giving people a language to conceptualize this is also *chef’s kiss* nice.
Also, arm chopping is NOT a love language!!! Dead for this line hahahahaha

I feel like a lot of people in the fandom tend to forget this, so I'm just here to give a kind, thoughtful reminder :]
Ambrosius Goldenloin in the movie is an East Asian man (Korean-coded), his skin is tan, his eyes are monolid and his nose is big
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's voiced by Eugene Lee Yang - a Korean-American actor who also has Chinese and Japanese heritage. Eugene Lee Yang looks like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
During the production, when Ambrosius was decided to be East Asian, artists looked up queer East Asian-American men, and based Ambrosius off of them. Ambrosius is literally drawn to look like Eugene Lee Yang
Please draw him as such, thank you

Voltron Legendary Defender's writers failed us making Allurance canon instead of Klance. Teen Wolf's writers failed us making Layden canon and not making Thiam canon too. X-Men's writers failed us not making Cherik canon. Supernatural's writers failed us not making Destiel canon. And BBC's writers also failed us not making Johnlock and Merthur canon.
That's why I ask you, Cobra Kai's writers, not to fail us too. Don't be like the previous writers. Be like Dana Terrace with Lumity. Be like ND Stevenson with Catradora and Goldenheart. Be like Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko with Korrasami. Please, don't be afraid to show LGBT characters in your show. Don't be afraid of showing an LGBT main couple in your show.
Some people would hate it, and would hate you for it, sure, but that always happens. People always hate some shows, for one or another reason. But shows like The Owl House, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Nimona and Legend of Korra are good shows. Shows that people like despite their LGBT characters. So please please please, make Lawrusso canon in season 6. If you do that, so many people will be happier thanks to you. But if you don't do it, we would have lost another battle for good LGBT representation.

I keep seeing the odd post here and there mentioning that Ballister Blackheart is white in the Nimona comic and it hurts my heart a little each time I see somebody say that bc he’s actually not! Ballister Blackheart is canonically Asian in the comic, he is East Asian and simply has light skin.
I just find it saddening and wrong (granted I’m white myself so maybe it’s not my place to have an opinion on) to erase a character who is canonically a poc just because they have light skin :/
This is not a diss to people who didn’t know or people that were mistaken, that’s sort of the reason I’m making this post, so more people can know the truth rather than be misinformed or assume incorrectly.
(Context of the photo attached is that it is from a QnA Nate did on the Nimona comic years ago)
Edit: added alt text of everything written in the photo

Wait wait wait Nimona was trying to build a connection with Gloreth after being rejected by animals and Gloreth was accepting of her despite being a shape-shifter but Nimona was seen as a monster by the village which then made Gloreth switch her opinions because her parents and the village told her that Nimona was a monster and tried to kill her then 1000 years later Ballister ended up building a connection with Ambrosius a descendant of Golreth and after being rejected by the knights throughout his whole life basically since training started young Ambrosius was accepting of him despite being a commoner but then he was seen as a murderer by the town which had made Ambrosius changed his opinion on him because of what he had seen and what the knights/Director were telling him but unlike Gloreth who while was reluctant at first to treat Nimona as a monster but then gave into hating her and wanting her to die like the people around her did Ambrosius had been reluctant throughout the whole ordeal but in the end stayed committed to Ballister because he loved him despite what everyone else was saying about him and its like the movie was already drawing parallels to how Ballister and Nimona were the same and viewed as outcasts/monsters/murderers but there's notable parallels to Gloreth and Ambrosius in how they were people close to Nimona and Ballister and it came to a point where they had to go against them but the key difference in what happened was the side they chose and the aftermath when they were being forced to chose a side and it really showcases how their generations were different thus their mindsets were different in handling the situation and its just exactly like in real life when it comes to queer people like people especially children can be conditioned to hate queer people with enough fear mongering/hate speech and that's exactly what happened with Gloreth in how she ended up treating Nimona and it was going to happen with Ambrosius but a saving grace was that he was much older so it was harder to change his opinions on Ballister that and he is in a different time period than Gloreth showing how things had drastically changed and advanced in many areas and i feel that the whole point with the parallel between Gloreth and Ambrosius is that times have changed and how even though our past generations have treated queer people like they are monsters and that we should hate them when in reality its not too late for our generation to treat them like equals and that we should love them like holy shit this movie is so insanely and unapologetically queer in so many ways that I did not imagine was humanly possible

didn’t get to tell this story on tumblr yet but i was lucky enough to get to see nimona early at a special screening + q&a with nd, the directors and producers…and when i got to talk with nate after i told him the movie made me cry nearly 10 times and he was just like “ah yes, i love inflicting emotional damage” and i was like “yeah I’VE NOTICED”

watched nimona, am a bit crushed now, but something i noticed that i found quite interesting is how she wears ‘nimona’ not just as a name, but also as an identity. it’s not just what she’s called, it’s also what she is. and, if i’m correct, ballister hardly, if ever, actually calls her by it until quite late, when he fully starts to accept her as a whole - the shapeshifting part of that whole which he loves rather than a flaw he looks past. and i think that really adds to the trans narrative of it all. it’s not just a name. it’s an integral part of who she is. and how ballister rather calls her a kid or a girl rather than that name, that identity, i think really quite reflects the really common experience of having people in your life that might not outright and purposefully show their hatred or disbelief of your identity, but who are clearly uncomfortable with it and does their best to skirt around it and to not have to acknowledge it
