Okay but this part of the OP
They're showing us their evolutions. You can see that volume 1-3 Weiss doesn't look happy, but that the she looks more determined in her volume 4-6 self. Volume 1 Blake looked serious, and her volume 4-6 self looked almost angry and very determined too. Yang smiles in both v1-3 and v4-6 self, but they're also different smiles; brightly and then a determined smirk.
And now their current selves?
Weiss is smiling brightly, and both Blake and Yang have confident smiles on their faces as well. The three of them went through major character arcs throughout the volumes that led them to change to be the people they are at the time. And their smiles? It shows that they like themselves now. They're happy with who they are.
Ruby?
Her first self is smiling, but her v4-6 self just looks... Tired. Not angry, not determined. Tired and sad.
And her current self? Well. Just look at her.

yes!! I know her solitary ass just craves to be held. she would one hundred percent be the "mr. darcy-flexing-his-hand" clip whenever you touch her while you guys are still friends. just freezing, tensing, feeling a rush of bliss wash over her whenever you lean in close to light her cigarette, or brush your hands on hers when you guys are standing close, or pat her back casually. every touch would have her aching and longing for more. she never initiates it back, of course, always too hyperaware of her every movement and too uncomfortable to naturally go about it. she just waits and waits on you, always.
when you guys finally start dating, her desire to be touched is evident. hands flinching whenever a piece of hair falls in your face, staring longingly at your thigh when you're seated together, leaning tenderly into your every touch, completely putty in your hands. you find it adorable, slowly starting to get more touchy as the days pass, linking your arms through hers in public, brushing her bangs back, straightening her shirt collars. and every time, this girl looks like she will ache, nostrils flaring, eyes closing momentarily, hands rolling into tight fists.
you eventually bring this up, urging her to be more affectionate with you, but this POOR GIRL. literally awkwardly patting your back when you hug her, raising her hand multiple times to yours when trying to find the right moment to hold yours, being at a loss for how to ask you to hold her when she's had a long day. she just fumbles, not knowing how to handle the weight of her emotions, not knowing what's socially appropriate, always worrying she's doing too little or too much. it's hard to just rely on her instincts when she feels like she every move of hers is under your watchful eyes. but, god, does she want it. the person who holds her most is her mom, and even after years of that, she still doesn't know how to handle such tenderness, never knows how to reciprocate in any way other than a quiet, helpful gesture. but, god, she wants it. she wants to bask in your touch, feel your warmth, and hold you whenever she wants to. she knows she can, you've told her she can. but, still, her movements feel too awkward and fumbling, and she scrutinizes herself.
eventually, though, she gets the hang of it, bless her. as soon as an urge hits her, she learns to lean into it, asking, "can I hold your hand?" or, "can we hug?" she knows you'll always say yes and take her in your arms, the safety of that assurance building her confidence. with time, she's able to ask the question easily, her self-consciousness slipping away. and she sees how you react, you know? when she first grabs you for a hug, she sees how you beam, and she wants to be the one causing that expression more. so, she learns to give more. she grabs your waist in public, leans her head on yours when she wants your warmth, and kisses your hand when she's grateful. it's hard at first, but you're always so tender, so kind. she knows you'd never judge her. and with that, her sense of surety builds, and in a matter of months, she's pressing goodbye kisses to you without pause and fiddling with your hair during movies.
