Thinking about the nightmare 90s!Tim has in YJ01...
Tim's kneeling on the sidewalk, gawking in horror at his hand. His wrist is wrapped with bandages, and his hand has been replaced with a batarang.
His actual hand, glove, and all have fallen off, swarmed by the killer cockroaches of Gotham's streets.
Tumblr media
Young Justice 1998 01
Idk, I can't stop thinking about how part of him is replaced with something Batman made, honed, and curated for efficiency and vigilanteism.
A part of Tim is just laying there... swarmed and consumed by the unkillable vermin of Gotham streets.
Here it is again; Tim's fear of slowly becoming someone that he isn't. Becoming a tool and a weapon, less human and more machine.
And then there's Batman in this nightmare. Standing tall, ready to move on... nonchalantly asking Tim to grow a beard so he can make a personal use of his shiny new appendage.
But it's the,
Don't worry, Robin... No one will notice.
that's just smacking me across the face.
A part of Tim is dead and gone, but dont worry, kid! No one's gonna care enough to notice! (This is not a dig towards Tim's parents btw. Ill talk abt the Drakes in a different post.)
Batman brushes off Tim's horror—when lil bro's literally choking with horror—with an assurance that everything that Tim's afraid of will come true and, hey! it isnt a big deal.
Of course, this is Tim's nightmare view of Batman and not a characterization on Bruce, but it's just another example of how Tim sees Batman as a symbol that has consumed Bruce. (So, also not a dig towards Bruce, btw. He gets his own post later, too)
Since Tim's first few appearances, he's been terrified of becoming consumed by justice (?), vengeance, and vigilanteism.
Between his visceral fear at the comfort/hug from Bruce when his mom died, to a different nightmare featuring nightwing, to this nightmare, to rejecting comfort from Bruce at Steph's funeral, to hating Robin and himself after his father's death, and faking an uncle to get away from Batman??
It just shows how terrified he is of becoming someone he isnt...
And this nightmare in particular adds this: he's afraid no one will notice.
Tumblr media
Young Justice 1998 01
It makes sense how his attempts to try and prevent the erasure of who he is would slowly escalate with every death. And with so many other heroes just... coming back... and coming back the same or even "close enough"?
It's easy to reach the point of rejecting death entirely. (am i side eyeing people who compare his reactions to certain people's death as a valid measure to who's more important to him? Maybe. Thats a different post tho)
Anyway. Fast forward like 3ish years later...

When Jason first joined the family, Dick called him his little brother, but now he’s just his brother or maybe younger brother. Tim has taken the mantle as his little brother and Damian is his baby brother.
For Jason, Dick is his brother or older brother, Tim is his younger brother, and Damian is his little or baby brother.
For Tim, Dick is his older brother, Jason is his other older brother, but sometimes just his brother, and Damian is his little brother.
For Damian they’re all just nuisances who do not deserve the title of his brother (unless Damian is being dramatic about something to get his way and it almost always works).
For Cass, she calls them all little brother, Dick included even though he’s older than her, because it annoys most of them for different reasons (Tim enjoys it).

It’s back!
Tumblr media
If you missed it the first time around, the “human are weird” anthology is back for a second printing. (There’s even a new story included: “Black Box” by Dara Brophy.)
Here’s the blurb:
In science fiction, humans are usually boring compared to other races: small, weak, with no claws or tentacles, and no special abilities to speak of. But what if we were the impressive ones, the unsettling ones, the ones talked about by all the other aliens? What if we're weird?
If you’d like a collection of excellent stories about humans inspiring awe, fear, and utter confusion, it’s available everywhere books are sold!

Something in World's Finest that I think needs to be taken into account in understanding Dick's relationship with Bruce, and Clark, and arguably the whole caped community, is that they don't perceive him as a child. I don't know exactly how old he's meant to be in World's Finest, but there is a clear delineation even between the way they treat the other Titans and the way they treat Dick. It means Dick gets treated as an equal (important and valuable to their dynamic working), but also that, inevitably, he gets less grace (even though he is a child).

Thinking about how Bruce never told Jason that Willis was dead despite knowing since before adopting him
Jason didn't know at all until he happened upon it in the batcave with the Two Face case going on. And just. Augh
Jason cared about Willis. Do you think he'd been living with Bruce, thinking his father was ok? Working up the courage to ask Batman to find his dad so he could try and visit him, see him again, tell his dad he's ok now, even though it's not important to a case (Jason is shown to think Bruce would have no interest in helping him find his mother in ditf)
How many stories was he thinking about telling his dad? Did he try to save up any gifts for him? Leave any notes for him? At the very minimum he wouldve spent 6 months in Bruce's care before learning his father was gone

I would like to offer the idea of Tim going by the alias Corvid instead of Red Robin.
Red Robin made sense during the Brucequest and time immediately after. But that’s specifically because it was a reflection of his mental state at the time. Tim should’ve/should start using a different mantle/alias/identity after he restabilizes. And here’s why I think it should be Corvid:
Corvid is in reference to Corvidae birds (the crow family), which are generally considered to be one of/the most intelligent families of birds
Corvids are known to use tools like sticks (like his utility belt and bo staff)
Tim could have a primary costume/identity called Corvid, but could also have a variety of costumes/identities based on the birds of the corvidae family (crows, ravens, magpies, jays, etc.) for going undercover so he has a plethora of civilian identities (Tim Drake, Alvin Draper, Caroline Hill, etc) and vigilante-type identities
Corvids are often associated with and feature the colors black, blue, and/or purple which aligns with the colors of Batman and Black Bat/Orphan, Nightwing, and Spoiler—all of which being people that have had a lot of influence on him and/or that he’s close to. (I’m aware of him wearing black and red to honor Kon because it’s their colors and Kon died. But since Kon came back to life, it feels more like a grim reminder than a memoriam)
I also just like the different feather designs of different corvids which means more potential for cool costume designs
Corvids, in multiple different cultures, are considered to be omens/messengers of, usually, bad news. This could be a neat combination with Tim using intimidation as a weapon like Batman (or him just generally being bad news for criminals). If you want, there’s also the angst potential of him seeing himself as bad luck or bringing death to the people around him
People already use the names Blackbird and Crow as alternatives for Red Robin, which are pretty similar to Corvid. I just think Corvid sounds cooler
It’s still a bird-based name so I feel like, despite moving passed his time as Robin, it doesn’t entirely ignore his history as Robin

the question isn’t “which robin bites?” it’s “under what circumstances does each robin bite?” bc the answer to the first question is all of them but the second one has a multitude of possible answers and i think all of them are right

Yeah the new ED definitely reminds all of us of something, doesn't it? Very kind and sweet of them to give us signs that this is it. This is the beginning of an end, everyone.
(Here's the real full ED btw - it's by the very same artist who sings this nostalgic song)

Is Bernard ever gonna learn any identities in best laid plans?
honestly not in the main fic. But I'm planning to write at least a spin off one shot if not a sequel entirely just so Bernard gets his vindication
