I have been wondering about Batcest shippers that are minors. Yeah, they somehow exist, not alot to what I know of. Just the risks of them seeing mature content though. Any thoughts?

it doesn't surprise me that batcest shippers who are young exist!!

on places like ao3 and other sites such as tumblr or twitter plenty of accounts and fics have pretty solid DNI that warn minors away from their content. on other places like discord, certain servers containing 18+ material can be age locked. on ao3 especially it has that yellow warning pop-up that you have to click through in order to read E and M content if you're a guest user or if you haven't gone into your ao3 preferences and checked off 'show me adult content without checking'.

there are a lot of different measures present to prevent people from seeing mature content but short of physically being in the room with the minor to stop them from clicking on stuff anyway there's limits to what warnings and DNI's can do. if an underaged person wants to get into a space to read an explicit fic or follow an nsfw artist there's really not a lot anyone can do.

but there is also the fact that plenty of batcest shippers have A LOT of content to read and art to enjoy that isn't explicit. despite batcest often having the connotation of 'depraved' and therefore being purely sexual a large portion of the fics for different batcest ships are rated general or teen.

as a matter of fact, the most popular pairing with the MOST amount of fics written about them in the 'Batman- All Media Types' category is a batcest ship. that being jaydick which has their fic catalog being 38.52% gen/teen rated. this is JUST gen/teen if i had included the M category some of these numbers might break 50% but i was limiting it to things where nothing beyond implied actions take place.

these %'s mean these batcest ships have an average of 35.37% of their fics being non-explicit. that's a little over a third of their fics which is plenty for people who are underaged. a lot of people aren't just interested in just seeing their ships have sex. a lot want to see them fall in love, have fun, get trapped into cheesy tropes, have adventures, live domestically, get together, etc. plus, in my experience, a lot of gen or teen fics have more compelling plots than any M or E fic i've ever read as well!!

i think that everyone including minors should be able to enjoy any ship they like but its unfortunate that the younger generation of fans are holding themselves or others to standards of purity of ff equaling "real life ethics". it's such a recent development because this was absolutely not such a widespread thing a decade a go.

found family is SUCH a way to condition yourself into kinks. it's not exclusive to mcyt. i jumped right from dsmp and sbi (even though you know, was always more of an emduo guy, i got to see the sbi fics as well) to dc and batfam and the shit people will write and slap on "they're brothers" to. it makes me a tad insane.

i'm not gonna talk about the obvious issues in the fandom, and like. i guess at least some people are honest about it, writing slash ships of the batboys and all (whole other separate issue) but like. some of the people with 'batcest dni' in their ao3 tag write the most borderline shit i've ever read.

i don't have concrete thoughts on it or like. a commentary abt what it means or whatever, just that the phenomenon seems to be present in found family fandoms as a whole, not just mcyt

Oh yeah I've seen hints of the batfandom in action, that seems FAIR. I do not want you to get swarmed.

Honestly the found family space being very similar in batfam to what it is in dsmp doesn't surprise me, especially when I know that a lot of people transitioned from DSMP/SBI to the batfam. (I also saw signs of people going to stranger things, and a bunch of other fandoms, and the part where I went Oh Good Luck was seeing some people trying to do kpop band boys as a found family. Go with god.)

You have people who really like the strong bonds between people in fiction, but they aren't quite mentally comfortable with writing or consuming sex or romance. And while some of them are doing this because they're sex-repulsed or really like platonic relationships, a bunch of them are just young or they've unwittingly bought into some cultural messages about how Sex Is Bad Actually. So in their fandom, they end up either picking up or creating a family dynamic for them to work with. And then if anything was to happen romantically with their new blorbos, it would be both underage and incest, so absolutely they've made sure nothing can happen because it would be horrible, so they're safe to continue with family dynamic, celebrating the strong bonds that brought them there. But then you have this little community of people, and I'd say while they know that they SHOULDN"T do anything romantic with the characters, the coding for romance and sex is in the head of a good like 99% of humanity, so when a romance or kink trope gets floated in this fictional context, falling through the mindscape in the shape of a hypothetical story, about half or more of these people don't go "ugh" (because they're romance-repulsed), they go "oh I can use that, that's a fun way to celebrate the bonds between people, I just have to clean it up a bit" (because most of humanity is fine with romance actually), and then they strip the blatant romance or sex out of it to make it Okay To Use, and then they write a story using, like romeo and juliet crimeboys (platonic), or cuddle pollen batfam. To grab an example of a glaringly romantic trope and a blatant kink trope that I've seen repurposed into platonic spaces.

And then in this community of people, every time someone does that, the temperature of the water in the pot they are all in ticks a little higher, because these tropes that someone grabbed from a romance novel or a kink page are now circulating in this platonic space as normal tropes that we all use, and other people use the tropes without really thinking about their origins, and that's how, like, hypnokink gets normalized. Or non-consentual cuddling (extended edition). Or smelling each other on each other's skin. Or fated mates platonic soulmates. All these things that if you're not in the fandom and enviroment, you read out of context and go "this CANNOT be platonic"— but they mean it to be!

And as you say, this is a perfect enviroment for conditioning yourself into certain kinks, because on the one hand you're moving in this space where there's a lot of non-sexual kink around touch and consent and restraints altered states and dehumanization (and sometimes more) happening ALL THE TIME, and you start to get the warm and tinglies at the climax of the story even if the climax of the story is someone getting tied up, and at the same time knowing that you shouldn't think about the blorbos kissing doesn't mean it's not gonna happen. It just means that it's super ilicit and illegal in your brain when it happens. But boy is it happening now, and these characters are so important to you and their bond matters so much to you, and—

Cause you are here cause you like thinking about the bonds between blorbos, and romance and sex and associated tropes are really compelling because as a society we've had about 11,000 years to refine our storytellling about them, so you just keep sinking further and further into the bonds between the characters, using all these tropes, and as it turns out, you're doing it in a space that means you're gonna come out of it with some kinks.

So. Yeah.

There is a STRAIGHT pipeline from Supernatural to DC, via JA voicing The Bat and Red Hood (and cospyaing them both and making a whole cognitive mess for many fans over this), yes, true, but ALSO, there's a FUNDAMENTALLY EVEN MORE EXPRESS PIPELINE between wincest and all the various batcest ships, and now I'll try and explain WHY.

See, personally, for the moat part, timing was good apparently, for when SPN was ending, Titans (2018) was making its debut. Now, yes, it was controversial, but apparently, I was not the only one who was looking around to see what's up THE DAY AFTER SPN, and this was my gateway.

Well lo and behold, there was a whole fandom awaiting, with lore amass, and so much content going back to the late 30's. What a day to be a alive.

So when I took my first steps back into my BTAS childhood memories, rewatching it, and catching up on comics essentials, I began drawing the parallels.

The Winchester family is a close-knit, secretive, paramilitary, outcast, hunted and a haunted unit. They are socially isolated by their secrets, are extremely dangerous and play on a chessboard all of their own.

The (patriarch-lead) cult like behavior, the generational use and abuse, the possessiveness, obsessiveness, protectiveness, and the overall unhinged behavior, the violence, all come together crashing down on the loneliness of the call.

And atop of all that, they fling around the word family, as if anyone other then themselves have any idea what it means (....to them. News flash, no, their understanding of what is "Family" is by far sideways than any of them would like to even try and unpack. It's just not.) Add to this the unbalanced familial/societal roles they play for each other, rotating the burdens like rotisserie chickens in a hellish stove, the emotional minefield with a side dish of extreme physical proximity, and voila, there you have it, enjoy your Gothic Family and Gothic House tropes. Literally.

All of those, are just right there, same as any disease, in the Batfam.

A paramilitary unit, extremely dangerous, with a Patriarch thy shall not question, with an encompassing reach, sources and resources, who are all playing on a playground out of the societal norm, with the prescribed Lonelines Of The Call, the hurt, the comfort, the myriad of rotating societal and familial roles between them all up to a state of blurriness, undefined boundaries of any at all, be the emotional, physical or otherwise...

The Githic house is LITERAL. The Gothic Family tropes are in abundance, and oh, OH the ultimately TEANSGRESSIVE nature of the relationships of all that are involved.

See where it all goes?

Those both narratives thrive on similar grounds.

And with them all the classics. From parentification to unhealthy coping mechanisms and so on.

How can you not read incestuous undertones in subtext or otherwise, when:

The Head Patriarch took under his wing a child, in whom he saw himself, a child who wasn't exactly a son or a brother or a friend or all of the above or none of the above but mainly was more emotionally mature than the Patriarch at some point and their roles regarding emotional comfort would switch time and time again. Later, he adopts him as a consenting adult.

The second son, who was taken in pretty much on a whim, or worse, to replace the first one who flew the nest (re: first son, to later be proven that him being alone is bad idea and a literal suicide but like that's a whole other deal), THAT SECOND SON dies horribly, later to serve as the Guilt (tm), that second son, after resurrection and other horrors, literally has intimate relationship with THE PATRIARCH'S MYTHOLOGICAL EX, with whom she has a child (and the timing would suggest that child may as well have been in the next room at the time ymmv).

The third son RECRUITED HIMSELF into the cult. The fourth son was traded from one cult to the other.

Son 3.2 is a "daughter" and the only sane person who managed to step out of the cult as far as I can see, not before being sacrificed on the Altart Of The Call and left for dead (narratively speaking).

(And I'm using son and daughter deliberately, because they all fly under the same banner as a "Family", you see where this is all going?)

The second daughter - left one cult and signed up for another, her life and death given to the Patriarch with extreme loyalty.

The 5th "son"? Amassed A FOLLOWING OFFSHOOT CULT before joining the main branch.

None of them is free of this. Each of them hero worships their respective predecessor, and if not the precious directly, then the above him up the chain.

Just look at all of this:

The first son was given and raised by the 4th son. When The Patriarch returned, the first son gave The Child to him gift and bow wrapped. At least he hadn't kneeled and said "My Master".

There are plots like "Mother".

There are visuals like The Batman who Laughs and his feral robins on chains.

There is so, so much ground for any transgression to take place, one only needs to choose.

And, in the end, and I really digressed HARD, I'm here to say, that, whatever grounds sprouted wincest, exist in Batfam comics in abundance and then some, to the point of pipelining the shippers from one to the other and hold.

...and bonus points? The damn variety.

So, hey! Feast upon it, you freaks. Feast!

Red Robin gets hit with a love spell during battle that knocks him out and will make him fall in love with the first person he sees when he wakes up.

The Bats takes him back to the Cave and while they wait for Bruce to get Zatanna or some other magic user to come help break the spell they all agree Red Hood should be who Red Robin sees and he can deal with a lovestruck Red Robin.

Since he'd be the one best able to handle that without the awkwardness of being his ex.

(Steph is his ex, Dick is in Bludhaven, Cass is in Hong Kong and Duke has a girlfriend. Which leaves Bruce. (He refused.) Barbara. (She laughed.) Or Damian. (Everyone agreed it was best not to.) So, Jason is what's left.)

Only, when Tim wakes up and sees Jason, he doesn't act any differently. He just gets up and demands a mission report and tries to go about business as usual, much to everyone's confusion.

(And to the disappointment of Stephanie, who had her phone out ready to record.)

They explain the love spell and wonder why nothing happened and Tim just says that obviously it didn't work and to not worry too much about it.

The spell did work it's just that Tim was already in love with Jason so nothing actually changed outwardly.

Bruce manages to get Zatanna there a few days later and examines Tim, and is also confused because there's definitely a love spell on him and there's no reason it shouldn't be working. To prevent her from looking further into it and making a big deal, Tim, in private, hints at why there might not be any effects.

Zatanna gets it and agrees to remove the spell and say that it just wasn't that strong after all.

Everybody seems to accept that explanation and move on, except for Jason, who knows Tim is hiding something and he's determined to find out what.

(Bruce also realizes that something is up but wants to respect Tim's privacy.)

I know no shipping is allowed, but is this event ship neutral? I write both gen + romantic works for various bat characters, and I'm a little hesitant to sign up if that'll be an issue for other participants

so to be honest, we were a bit confused about this question at first, but here's a two-fold answer (depending on what you were trying to ask):

we do allow shipping/romantic works in this bang! we've never limited to only platonic/familial relations in general, so if you write romantic works for, idk, dick/koriand'r, tim/bernhard, bruce/selina, whatever - totally fine! you're super welcome to do that!

however, we have a rule on not writing what qualifies as batcest (as stated in our faq regarding 'is there anything i'm not allowed to write'), so bat family member/bat family member. we do not exclude people who write/have written batcest before from participating, we only ask that the submissions to the bang do not contain batcest.
