if you spell it connor, comic fans think of connor hawke, who is a major member of the arrowfam. if you spell it konner or konnor, it just looks like you don't know that kon is short for kon-el, his kryptonian name. either way -- it's not his name. his civilian identity name is conner kent.

please, please spell his name correctly if you're going to include him. there's nothing more disheartening than clicking on something tagged with kon and/or timkon only to see kon referred to as connor or konner or konnor.

and. listen. i know you aren't including him in your batfam + timkon cameo because he's your favorite or anything. but it would be really cool of you to spell his name right if you're going to put him in the fic. otherwise, why is he there, you know?

Lois Lane has a cut out clip of Vicki Vale. Vicki Vale is a journalist in Gotham City. Her first appearance was in Batman #49 (1948) as seen in the panel here (W: Bill Finger, A: Lew Sayre and Bob Kane, I: Charles Paris, L: Ira Schnapp).

Looks like Jimmy is a fan of Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask. Good video game taste.

Jimmy mentions a psychic starfish and the one starfish in the DC universe who is psychic is Starro the Conqueror, who's first appearance is in Brave and the Bold 28 (1960) (the cover art here is done by Mike Sekowsky, Murphy Anderson, and Ira Schnapp) and has the power to mind control people.

Lois, after barging into Perry White's office about a story, mentions Mt. Simonson. This is a neat name drop to Superman: The Man of Steel writer Louise Simonson, one of the nicest comic book writers you'll ever meet. She helped co-create John Henry Irons a.k.a Steel with artist of the Superman: The Man of Steel comic, Jon Bogdanove (really hope we get to see Irons in this show too).

Jon Bogdanove also gets a name drop here as does...

Dan Jurgen, comic book writer and artist on the Superman comic in the 90s (also one of my favorite Superman artists).

Now who are these kids that call themselves the Newskid Legion? Well, they are a VERY deep DC cut and reference to the Newsboy Legion back in the 1940s. The group was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, LEGENDARY comic book creators.

But who is the one below that drawing? We'll his name is in Big Word's word puzzle, in the show. It's Jim Harper, the Guardian.

Jim Harper becomes the Newsboy Legion's legal guardian despite their causing trouble for him. The page here is from Star Spangled Comics #7, the Newsboy Legion and the Guardian's first appearance, by Joe Simon, Jack Kirby, and Whitney Ellsworth. You might've seen the Guardian on the recent Young Justice cartoon.

When Lois, Clark, and Jimmy go investigate about the smuggled robots in Metropolis, Jimmy makes a reference to super intelligent gorillas in France. This is a subtle hint at Monsieur Mallah, the Doom Patrol villain who will be in the show along with his partner, the Brain. Both made their first appearance in Doom Patrol #86 (1964) .

The cover art here is done by Arnold Drake, Bob Brown, and Ira Schnapp.

Later in the episode we see Clark receive his powers and he is surrounded with electricity, giving off Superman Blue vibes when in the comics, Superman gained electricity powers and became Electric Blue Superman who's first appearance was in Superman #123 (1997) (cover art by Dan Jurgens, Joe Rubenstein, Patrick Martin, and Todd Klein.

Kon slams the door open (he doesn't, his TTK catches it before it can dent the wall, but it's the principle of the thing).

"Problem," he says abruptly, and Clark blinks at him from where he's editing his article.

"Problem?"

"Tim is a fan of Lois."

Ah. "Well, yes," Clark says, "I think he's always been one? He was sort of star-struck the first time they met." Which had been very cute, and Lois had found it incredibly flattering that in a room that had herself, Batman, Nightwing, and Superman, Tim as Robin had been practically glued to her side, hanging on her every word.

"No, Tim is a fan of Lois," Kon stresses.

"...Yes?"

"And Lois is investigating Luthor's new business partner."

"Yeah, she mentioned that, she's just looking into records though."

"She was, until she found out his new business partner is from and in Gotham."

Well, that's... concerning. Lex on his own is bad, Lex cavorting with Gotham Rogues can only be worse.

"That's... not good," Clark concedes, "but Tim can help her investigate and keep an eye on her." Kon looks actively pained. "What?"

"Clark," Kon says, "think about the other people Tim's been a fan of and how Tim's acted with them. Would you describe any of his actions as 'keeping an eye on them'?"

It's on the tip of Clark's tongue to say 'Batman', but....

But Tim wasn't really a Batman fan to start, he was a fan of Dick Grayson, of Robin and then Nightwing. Tim absolutely kept an eye on Dick in the sense of encouraging him and not letting him be down about himself, but when it came to Dick's plans? His suggestions?

Clark suddenly recalls hearing Nightwing's voice in Metropolis go 'hey wanna jump off a roof and see how long it takes Uncle Supes to catch us?' followed by Robin going 'you're on'.

And Tim is a fan of Lois. Lois, who's ideas are frequently only shelved because she doesn't have access to a grappling hook or the tech to loop security feeds - both of which Tim does have.

"Problem," Clark realizes abruptly.

"Problem," Kon agrees.

I recently watched my adventures with superman and I really appreciated how much they portrayed Lois as reckless and bonkers (as all adaptations should), which in turn had me thinking about a universe in which clark and kon have a good relationship and able to commiserate about their respective crazy human partner

Finding the Right Words

how about... BOTH of them together? the cousins ever!!!

Headcanon A:  realistic

they start hanging out after kon's resurrection and the destruction of new krypton. kara's feeling so lost for so long, and kon's trying to figure out who he is, and they're both family. he teaches her about earth and she teaches him about krypton. they talk through their grief about it and how out of place they both feel in different ways. they go to the arcade together and just vibe. it's good for them both!

Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious

kara has a hot temper and a protective streak. she's already pissed enough about the way cat grant wrote about her; one day she and kon are just like, at panera bread or whatever as conner kent and linda lang, and she overhears someone talking shit about superboy. conner has to throw linda over his shoulder and haul ass out of there before she starts throwing furniture. please linda i appreciate it you are SO sweet but i don't wanna get banned from panera bread

Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends

when i first read new krypton arc and zor-el snapped kara's glasses saying she didnt need to be linda lang anymore, i honestly thought those were kon's glasses and was devastated. like, in canon she says hey i just bought those! but i think it's so much worse if they were the pair of kon's glasses that tim gave her.

Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.

kara hangs out in smallville sometimes just to see kon and ma and krypto! she meets kon's smallville friends too (and maybe kisses lori luthor behind the old silo. i mean what)

Summary:

In the wake of Bruce's death and Damian's rise as Robin, Tim Drake is left alone and spiraling. (SPOILERS if you havent seen it obviously)

About 3ish minutes into the episode we see Clark be affected by red sun radiation, one of the non-Kryptonite weakness Superman has.

In the comics we first learn about this weakness in Action Comics #300 (1963), cover art by Curt Swan, George Klein, and Joe Letterese, where Superman is transported to the future by the Superman Revenge Squad, where the sun turned red thus losing his powers and has to find a way back home.

At the place where Jimmy was captured, we meet Monsieur Mallah and the Brain, at least MAwS version of these characters. I talk more about them in here. The episode has them depicted more like an old married couple with no supervillainous intentions compared to their comic counterparts...

who often associate themselves as enemies to the Doom Patrol and affliated with the Brotherhood of Evil. Also the Brain is usually French in the comics, here in MAwS, the Brain is German. The cover is from Outsiders #37 (2006) cover art by Daniel Acuna.

Back outside we see where Monsieur Mallah and the Brain took Jimmy, Cadmus Minefield.

Cadmus/Project Cadmus/the DNA Project, is known for its genetic engineering projects. The organization makes its first appearance in Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #135 (1971) created by legendary comic book creator, Jack Kirby. Cadmus is pretty well known for cloning Superboy/Kon-el/Conner Kent. Like in MAwS Cadmus is a government sanctioned division that's located outside of Metropolis. Ironic since in MAwS the government disavows Cadmus. You can read more about it on these two pages from Who's Who in the DC Universe #12 (1991), the art is done by Dan Jurgens, Dennis Janke, and Anthony Tollins.

Later in the forest we see Lois and Clark have to deal with the OMACs.

In the comics, Jack Kirby created OMAC, at the time, the acronym stood for One Man Army Corp. Buddy Blank of Earth-AD (a future post-apocalyptic Earth) was selected to be part of the OMAC program where with the help of the Brother Eye satellite grants him powers of super strength, stamina and density control. The cover art here for OMAC #1 (1971) was done by Jack Kirby, Mike Royer, and Gaspar Saladino.

Years later OMAC gets reinvented to be a cyborgs of Brother Eye that was developed by Batman thanks to his paranoia about super powered heroes turning evil. The page here is from the OMAC Project #5 (W: Greg Rucka, P&I :Jesus Saiz, C: Hi-Fi, L: Phil Balsman). This iteration of OMAC uses the acronym for Omni-Mind and Community. These Cyborgs make their first appearance in the OMAC Project #1 (2005). MAwS's OMACs are a lot more robotic and Evangelion-esque designed compared to how they look in the comics. Note the mohawk/fin designs on OMACs heads in both iterations of the comics and how the robots are designed in MAwS.

Monsieur Mallah mentions one dimensions in the universe where he and the Brain can be accepted. This brings to mind...

DC's multiverse. The multiverse makes its first appearance in the Flash #123 (1961) where Barry Allen and Jay Garrick meet for the first time. DC's multiple Earths have changed over the years from having only 52 distinct Earths to now infinite. The Multiverse map created by Grant Morrison and Rian Hughes, here is from Multiversity comic series.

Someone on the MAwS crew is a fan of the ED-209 design in Robocop.

After the fight with the OMACs, the Brain talks about the General. The only person in DC comics who usually goes by that moniker is...

General Wade Eiling. The panels here are from Captain Atom #1 (1987) (W: Cary Bates, P: Pat Broderick, I: Bob Smith, C: Carl Gafford, L: John Costanza). General Eiling is often associated with Suicide Squad/Task Force X. So it's possible that much like Parasite and Ivo, the MAwS team are combining characters by having...

him be a combination of General Eiling and General Sam Lane, Lois's dad. But who knows. Gotta wait for confirmation if this is either Eiling or Lane.
