BEING A LIST OF THE THIRTEEN GREATEST RIVERDALE LINES, ON THE OCCASION OF THAT SHOW'S TERMINATION

As our much loved/hated show comes to an end, I feel compelled to record, for posterity, the greatest thirteen pieces of dialogue to spring from the pens of RAS and his henchmen. It was, of course, originally a top ten list, but I simply could not exclude a few of these treasures. Without further ado: 

13. 

“I dropped out in the 4th grade, to sell drugs, to support my nana.” 

“That means you haven't known the triumphs and defeats, the epic highs and lows of high school football.” 

Spoken by: an inmate of Leopold and Loeb Juvenile Detention Center, and Archie Andrews. 

In: 3 x 2 

Yeah, okay, this one had to be on the list. It’s funny, I’ll admit. It’s a great example of the overwrought semi-sincere melodrama that helped make this show so special. It’s low on the list largely because The Normies got their hands on it, so every time I hear someone make a reference I get all “do not cite the deep magic to me, witch.” 

12. 

“No! No! What are we supposed to do now? I’m horny as heck!”

Spoken by: Archie Andrews 

In: 7 x 16

Season 7 is undeniably dreadful, and yet there are diamonds in the rough. The occasion is the failure of a projector, just as Archie and Reggie prepare to watch a pornographic film. The utter desperation with which KJ Apa delivers this line is exquisite. One is made to feel they are witnessing a genuine tragedy. 

11. 

“Tonight, they’re making an exception and debuting a cover of the song my parents claim they were listening to the night Jason and I were conceived.” 

Spoken by: Cheryl Blossom. 

In: 1 x 1 

Really a fantastic line. A wonderful encapsulation of the casual absurdity of Cheryl’s character, and a foretaste of the lunacy we would plumb in later episodes and seasons. 

10. 

“In case you haven’t noticed, I’m weird. I’m a weirdo. I don’t fit in and I don’t want to fit in. Have you ever seen me without this stupid hat on? That’s weird.” 

Spoken by: Jughead Jones

In: 1 x 10

A genuine classic. “High school football” before “high school football.” One is never entirely sure just how sincere the line is meant to be, both on a meta-level and in-universe. A perfect illumination of Jughead’s pretentiousness. It is made all the better by the occasional cuts to Lili Reinhard’s agonized face. 

9. 

“At the last dance, multiple students were murdered.” 

Spoken by: Principal Holden Honey. 

In: 4 x 2

Delivered as an explanation to Toni and Cheryl, as to why there would be no school dance this year. Principal Honey is in fact supremely rational in the cancellation of this dance. This being Riverdale, he is of course treated as an unreasonable tyrant. 

8. 

“Bro, I know all the secrets of this universe.” 

Spoken by: Archie Andrews (evil version)

In: 6 x 5 

Spoken as evil Archie reveals his evil plan to keep the parallel universes apart. KJ Apa’s delivery once again makes this line. He is comically sinister. Strangely, he sells it. 

7. 

“A Vughead kiss, right now, in the present might be precisely what it takes to save a future Bughead from imploding.” 

Spoken by: Jughead Jones. 

In: 2 x 14

One of those lines that both makes me laugh and makes me genuinely angry. This was a fairly early season, and this may have actually been the first line to get me asking, ‘did they genuinely write and deliver that?’ Extra points for use of the atrocious ‘Vughead’ portmanteau ship name rather than ‘Jeronica.’ 

6. 

“I’m the ultimate wild card. I am the daughter of The Black Hood. The nightmare from next door. I’m training with the FBI and I’m coming for you, you psycho bitch.” 

Spoken by: Betty Cooper

In: 4 x 14 

Just delicious. Another one of those lines that leaves you somewhat unsure whether or not the writers understood how genuinely hysterical it was. “The Nightmare from Next Door” sounds like an announcer hyping up a wrestler. Spoken with a raw sincerity by Lili Reinhart. Also points for the heavy homoeroticism between Betty and Donna. 

5. 

“For I am Cheryl Blossom, Queen of the Bees.” 

Spoken by: Cheryl Blossom.

In: 5 x 16. 

This one really doesn’t require any elaboration. 

4. 

“Elijah ascended…and I will, too.” 

Spoken by: Edgar Evernever.

In: 4 x 5. 

Admittedly, this one is only spectacular with context. But in context—the context being that Chad Michael Murray delivers this line while dressed like Evel Knievel and standing in a cartoon rocket right out of a Warner Bros cartoon—it becomes utterly magnificent. 

3. 

“It’s not queer baiting, it’s saving the world.” 

Spoken by: Veronica Lodge. 

In: 6 x 22. 

It’s actually hard for me to decide whether this one is funnier with or without context. Without context it’s wonderful, but it possibly becomes even funnier when you know that the context is that Veronica needs to kiss Cheryl to transfer superpowers into her body so she can turn into a Scarlet Witch knock-off and stop a magic comet summoned by Sephiroth an English wizard who is also the Devil. 

2. 

“If there’s no wedding reception, it means the Gargoyle King has won.” 

Spoken by: Kevin Keller. 

In: 3 x 12.

One of my personal favorites. This is a perfect line because like #3, it requires no real elaboration. There is absolutely no context in which it isn’t hysterical.

“Word of my exploits serving Nick his comeuppance has seeped into the demimonde of mobsters and molls my father used to associate with, so the five families are sending their youngest and brightest, their ‘princes,’ as it were to, well, come court the rare Mafia Princess who can belly up to the bar with the big boys.

Spoken by: Veronica Lodge. 

In: 2 x 20. 

This is, in my opinion, the all-timer. Every word is perfect. The rapid-fire alliteration. The use of the word ‘demimonde.’ The entirely unnecessary addition of ‘as it were.’ This is borderline Dr. Seuss. The fact that Camila Mendes delivered it without cracking a smile should have won her an Emmy. No. An Oscar. This line is Riverdale.

Hot Take amongst The TCoA&L Fandom: Coffincest does not work as a "they're both awful and deserve eachother" dynamic. Between the two, Ashley is the abuser. Just flat-out. If you're gonna ship 'em, you either have to recharacterize Ashley Graves to not be abusive towards Andrew (which I'm speculating is going to be her character arc going forward in the text) and instead write her as merely a sociopathic enabler of his incestuous attraction, or you have to accept that the dynamic is going to be the less-popular (and maybe more problematic?) "Yes, he deserves better, but he doesn't want better / doesn't want to be saved."

Hot Take amongst this friend circle: That being said, I don't hate Coffincest as much as I should. It's an objectively awful ship that represents everything wrong with modern storytelling and breaks bread with the absolute worst of the worst (Reylo, Catradora, the Hunter x [Insert other TOH character here] ships, arguably anything to do with Twilight), but because the canonical execution is so shallow and so playing-it-safe and so exactly-what-you'd-expect that Lily's core complaint ended up being the relatively merciful "eh, it didn't commit to the bit" rather than joining the collective backlash the game was getting, I'm somehow able to stomach it, which-- ngl? is fucking hysterical.

I love Voldemort as a villian. He is the best villian ever. I headcanon him as not believing in the pure blood bullshit though. Voldemort hates muggles of course. But he doesn't buy into that bullshit. Plus Voldemort only cares about power and himself. Easy way to get followers, pretend to care about those beliefs. That's my opinion and how I see the character.

I hate the Christian religious symbolism in harry potter that I can spot now that I'm older. And 100% ignore it. Love aus that explore into dark and gray magic. Bringing pagan or other other Wiccan type magic beliefs into harry potter aus to explore is always my favorite.

All witches and magic movies, cartoons and shows are just all connected to me in the harry potter universe. Its a multiverse of witches and I'm loving it.

Least Favorite character: The Marauders. This is more an issue with Rowling's writing, setting them up as shining figures for Harry (except for quiet one-dimensional Wormtail) but then muddling with actions of straight up harrassement and bullying, allowing bullying to happen, later neglectful and selfish behavior. the narrative, even outside Harry's perspective, tries to characterize them as still shining figures, when I think so each individually did makes it so weird how highly every character around them speaks of them. Especially James but maybe he's your typical jock who gets away with harassment, even of his love interest, and the narrative doesn't adress that. *shrugs*

a random thought: Ok, but since when does run know that Malfoy owns a Hand of Glory? He brings it up in the Halfblood Prince, and I couldn't find any indication in the text that Draco actually bought it, let alone letting Ron know that he owns one?

An unpopular opinion: There's a lot of talk how the movies screwed up Ron although I feel up from Order of the Phoenix, Rowling gave Hermoine the emotional intelligence Ron actually had, lowering his intelligence, and basically didn't know how to involve him properly in the plot anymore. Don't get me wrong, I like Hermoine but I have the impression that the books were too influenced by the movie tweaks of making her more charismatic on top of being brilliant and hardworking. Not that becoming more socially competent shouldn't be a goal for her, social inaptness was her biggest flaw, yet that quality was stripped form Ron.

When I started shipping them: Roughly after reading ASOS, at Catelyn clutching the flayed skin of Theon's finger.

My thoughts: It's all about the angst, the friendship that was so genuine, Robb's fatal decision as a king to put his trust in his only friend, the deep, deep regret, the underlying unhappiness of Theon muddling the water between them....

What makes me happy about them: Robb and Theon both actually had no friends in their age. For Theon feeling so isolated, who actually never had a warm home or someone to comfort him except for Dagmer, there was Robb. Someone with whom Theon would actually like to talk about the Iron Islands and personal stories, and one of the few people with whom Robb could be himself.

What makes me sad about them: "Where was I? I should have been with him? I should have died with him."

Things done in fanfic that annoys me: The white washing of Robb's personality. Whereas Theon can be a wreck, Robb is always the eternal, spotless sunshine as in every bland wishfullfillment story. Basically Robb is there to fix Theon.

Things I look for in fanfic: Angst! Robb with a fleshed out personality!

My wishlist: Just for the angst: Theon meets Rickon when he's grown up and Theon is shaken to the bone how similar Rickon looks to Robb. Or worse: If Theon was to marry Sansa, the fact of them looking similiar to wach other leads to unsettling projections on her.

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: Robb was to marry Alys Karstark who by personality probably would've been good to contrast with Robb's domineering streak and moody moments. The match made in hell, serving Theon's MILF interest in the worst way, Theon and Cersei lives rent free in the back of my mind. No actually, Theon marrying Sansa could've been a likely outcome to secure peace the North and the Iron Islands. (Although, for my dear girl's sake, I hope Theon gains some empathy for women before they ever get married.)

My happily ever after for them: Robb had never sent Theon away, the Red Wedding couldn't have been orchestrated. Even after the Iron Born raid the Northern shore (as it is implied at Theon's arrival, Balon already readied vessels, no matter if Theon lived or not), Theon and Asha can secretly create a treaty overruling Balon's decreet and gain the Iron fleet for the support of the North. Even though Robb and Theon each are to marry a woman, they'd come together as often as they can.

003 | Give me a character & I will tell you: [Bob Andrews]

How I feel about this character: He's so funny. Before he was the sheepish, barely noticed archivist of the trio, and at some point he collected girlfriends like Ü-eggs and charms every girl they need to talk to for investigations. Like all the three ???, I like him.

Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: None really, although the episodes with the evil psychiatrist give me strong Mrs. Robinson associations.

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: His father. They seem to be on really great terms by the way the way Bob wants to follow him into his journalism career, and is constantly supported by his father during research.

My unpopular opinion about this character: He has a lot of unnoticed qualities which may not be prominently noticed yet flesh out the trio's dynamic quiet nicely. If it wasn't for the amazing dynamic between the voice actors, on paper Bob would've had remained incredibly unnoticable from all the three. It's a fun idea of Fröhlich's to turn him into the one with common sense whereas both Justus and Peter tend to have some sleeping criminal energy in them. (Justus is ready to do a lot of things "for science", Peter has no concept of neither property law nor unpicked locks.) He also adds a lot of human element when talking to clients which Justus and Peter both tend to neglect.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: In one episode his VW beetle gets badly damaged. I demand confirmation of an old timer loving mechanic fixing up the poor thing!

Favorite friendship for this character: Morton, Justus, and Peter, obviously

8. Who does what chores and why?

Lily actually likes doing house chores—it helps her relax—and wants perfect cleanliness, so she does most of it. Since Andrew is a good chef, he's the one who cooks and goes grocery shopping.

10. How do they make up after a fight?

It's usually very natural. Once the anger goes away, they sit down together, each one doing their own thing. If it's a big deal, they take some time to talk and clarify. Otherwise, they just apologize and carry on.

I just realized that actually, RAS has been doing this shit with Barchie from the the moment Bughead became more and more popular.

Season 1: A terribly heartbreaking scene of Betty and Jughead fighting at a birthday party. Where Archie was somehow implicated as a possible threat to their separation. And Jughead blurts it out: Until you're sick of slumming it with me, or until Archie changes his mind and says he wants to be with you?

Season 2: A whole 2 breakups, where again Archie was involved in one of them. The Black Hood forces Betty to cut Jughead out of her life and she does so by asking Archie to notify Jughead: Maybe you could tell him that we just need to stay away from each other for a while. Something, anything, to just keep him away... To appease the Black Hood. It doesn't have to be cruel, Archie, just enough to make Jug believe it.

Also sometime in the same season, Betty and Archie kiss and don't tell Jughead and Veronica. Jughead also then kisses Tony and Veronica. All even, all equally.

Season 3: The writers made a crazy player out of Jug, which also separates Betty from Jughead, and she sweetly saves Archie.

Betty doesn't tell Jug about her attacks. But overall, they are strong this season.

Season 4: In order to cover up Jug's death, Betty does everything and even kisses Archie. She even makes excuses to Veronica, defending Archie for initiating the kiss.But then she says that Jughead is the only man for her. Now they want to separate them again and try to convince us that Betty and Archie have feelings for each other.

Yeah, that shit sucks. Like RAS. Who is a greedy person who doesn't like his show to be popular because of a couple. But he will never get as many wins and admires as Bughead did. He's a bad old man.
