So here I’m sitting, trying to work on one of my WIPs, and my brain goes, hey, yknow what is a fun head canon for MOE?
No? But I’m sure I’m about to be told.
Maybe it’s already canon to MOE, I can’t remember. But Tango can draw really really well. He doesn’t think he can, thinks he’s limited to engineering sketches. (Or doodles on the margins of proofreading papers) He especially can get frustrated when he finds himself sketching Jimmy. Because he doesn’t think he can ever draw Jimmy correctly. He’s wrong, he’s drawing Jimmy well enough most art students would weep, but he holds himself to impossible standards.
I don’t know, just the thought of Jimmy getting all flustered by finding a stash of these drawings of himself and he can see all the love Tango pours into them, and Tango goes “Yeah, they aren’t good enough.” Whilst Jimmy’s brain short circuits because ?!??! what do you mean you see me this beautiful and these drawings are amazing???
~Elen (🍠)
My Elen!!
So. this. I've been rotating this in my head for a few days now and I cannot find a reason to NOT put it in. I don't know if it will appear in the main story (so much is outlined and half written now) but I will try my damndest because I LOVE Tango who can draw.
It's normally Jimmy who I have doodling in my aus. But thinking about it, Jimmy spent most of his free time growing up out doing things. He was working part time jobs and doing school work. Tango on the other hand, did school and Ranch and maybe he saw Zed. Most of his childhood is yapping with Jevin on their horses. He's had tons of time to teach himself how to draw.
he has a little book in his saddle bag. and a simple charcoal pencil that he sharpens with his pocket knife. and he draws what he sees. birds, bison, landscapes. and when he gets to college he learns to draw more mechanically. but it always has a bit of an artistic flair his classmates never had He draws a sktech for one of his projects and it has shading on it. Or he marks up an exam with explanations of his thought process, and he gives visuals to many of this thoughts. Tango has always been someone to just snap his fingers and understand something, he's learned that many people need visuals, so he always provides them.
Drawing people though? I don't think he has a lot of practice in that. He can do loose outlines of a person in a landscape, but never detailed enough to know WHO the cowboy in a drawing is. until he met Jimmy. Theres a moment where he's up late, somewhere between the start of their flirting and the lollipop scene of chapter one. He's working on a project and is thinking about Jimmy's blushing flustered face and just, draws it. It doesn't look very good, and it doesn't look like Jimmy at all, but that doesn't stop him from trying again. As they get to know eachother and as Tango commits Jimmy's face to memory, they improve. Tango is a practical guy, he doesn't have social media and he hardly uses his phone, this is his way of "stalking the gram". this is how he gets to look at Jimmy when they aren't around eachother. on loose bits of papers, on the edge of his homework, on the back pages of a sketchbook he hasn't drawn in since he was last in texas. is Jimmy's face. Sleeping on the lab couch, taught in frustration, smiling softly. The only thing that Tango just cant seem to get right are his eyes. Nothing can capture them, not even the person who stares into them everyday.
GOD THIS MANNNNNNN hes to romantic aough. Thanks for this!! I needed this big time . much love Elen!

Hi!!! For the fic writer ask game: 🍓, 🛼, 🏜️, and 🪲?
hello!!!
🍓 ⇢ how did you get into writing fanfiction?
previously answered!!!
🛼 ⇢ describe your latest wip with five emojis
you also get original fiction bc i do not have a fanfic wip :'(
🐟🤖🪐💥🛜
🏜️ ⇢ what's your favourite type of comment to receive on your work?
i love any and all!!! my faves are "i'm rereading this" or the ones that quote my writing back to me to tell me parts they liked!
however, my favorite commentor in recent memory is the person who left a comment on one of my mars house fics saying that I GOT THEM INTO NATASHA PULLEY NOVELS BECAUSE THEY LIKED MY ORIGINAL FICTION??? i'm still riding that high because WHAT. HUH??? i'm winning
🪲 ⇢ add 50 words to your current wip and share the paragraph here
His body hadn’t been in the part of the ship that had been lost. If it had been, his mind could have lived on in the ship’s computer, but only for a few days, hemorrhaging memories and slowly losing function.
He pushed himself up, overbalancing in the sudden weightlessness. His body was in a white T-shirt and the trousers of his uniform. No time to find his jacket. The other ship was reloading. Cannons needed time to cool between shots, or they would melt in their own heat. The only question was how long.
believe it or not this isn't military sci-fi, it's about the mc's rocky and unhinged journey from veteran to civil servant to rogue alien househusband to civil servant again but this time a diplomat and for a different government. it's about multilingual dictionaries, the ability to psychically possess machinery through the power of fancy brain technology, being in love with your commanding officer who is also kind of a famous socialite, selkies, and the fact that radio signals don't travel well underwater

Dear DD, I'm wondering if you could show examples (from your own work or otherwise) of what really, *really* rough drafts of fiction writing look like. I'm talking the earliest stages of the process that normally most people don't show to the public; whenever I look around online, what folks seem to post as "WIP" samples are usually more like 80-90% polished excerpts.
While my brain logically knows these are the late-stage stuff, it has an ill-advised habit of trying to draft to that 80-90 level of quality from the get-go--I think it might help to see what the equivalent of "thumbnails" or "sketches/doodles" look like in writing, especially from someone who's been At The Work for a long time. Hopefully it's an alright request! I understand if for various reasons you can't.
I'm more than willing to show people my stuff in process, every now and then. ...But in my case, your initial query poses an unusual challenge. And it's this:
After pushing fifty years of doing this work (or indeed, you had it right, this Work) for money, everything comes out looking fairly polished.
And this can't be helped. Once you've been doing this work for long enough—once doing it well starts being the thing responsible for keeping you and your family fed—you will inevitably (eventually) evolve the ability to exude smooth-looking prose at minutes' notice. Over the years your internal prose filters will get trained into being increasingly fine-meshed... and the longer this goes on, the more flatly they'll refuse to let clunky stuff out onto the page any more. You don't really even think about it. You just keep refining a given phrase/sentence/paragraph in your head until it feels acceptable.
After a couple/few decades, this ability becomes an ever more finely-honed survival characteristic. You can no sooner emit actively coarse prose (without trying purposefully to do so, which is another story...) than you can stop breathing for minutes at a time without suffering the consequences. (shrug) It's just the way your life experience has taught your Drafting Brain to conduct itself, going forward.
Tumblr media
Now... this doesn't mean at all that the drafted material, be it ever so polished-looking, is necessarily what you intended (or needed!) to write. Oh no. I could this very day show you some prose that by my standards is still really rough, because I wrote it five minutes ago... and you'd look at it and be very unlikely to be able to see what my problem was with it.* Whereas I'm sitting staring at it and muttering "Dammit, something's missing here. No idea what. I'll come back to it tomorrow."
And indeed I wrote something about three hours ago that (as I got it onto the page in its earliest form) left me literally gasping about how obtuse I'd been about the situation and emotions described in it, as recently as early this afternoon before I had lunch. It was a scene that had been missing from something I'm completing at the moment—indeed not merely missing but completely uncontemplated—and as it spooled itself out on the page all I could do was shake my head at my own idiocy at having missed the opportunity earlier, while I was nailing down the plot.
And I would love to show you that piece of prose right this minute, so that you could see what minutes-old prose from me looks like. Except it's seriously spoilery, and I refuse to sabotage a larger work by allowing out any material that's so loaded... and which viewed out of context would deprive it of most of its power. So, as we say around here, 'Sorry not sorry.'" Though I promise I'll come back to this and talk about it "in the clear" later, when that work's published.
...Anyway. The best advice I have for you just now is that trying to make your filters-in-training less effective is—to put it as gently as Captain Amelia might—a mistake.
Tumblr media
That urge to have the first draft—or the "zero draft" as some are calling it these days: I use this myself—be as good as possible is frankly a lifesaver. Indulging it, sentence by sentence and paragraph by paragraph, will only leave you with less frustration, less editing and re-editing, and way less Flat Forehead Syndrome over time. You are going in the right direction, even if it makes you feel like you're losing valuable time.
Your brain's attempts to draft to the highest possible level are not ill-advised. Indulge the urge to get your drafting more right, even if it makes you suffer a bit. No one ever said this writing lark was going to be all fun. (And if they did, they lied to you.) Also: hunting through other people's WIP excerpts, be they rougher than yours or more polished, in a search for something that your excerpts or drafting style should or could theoretically look like, will do you no good in the long term... and may do you harm. All you're likely to be left with, after you haven't found anything useful in the wake of the shoulder-peering, is a sense—almost certainly an inaccurate one—that you're somehow doing it wrong.**
You're not. You're finding your own way, at your own speed. This is the Writer's Journey. (As opposed to the Hero's, which I have characters shouting at me about at the moment.) (eyeroll) As you continue going your own way, your drafting will gradually pick up speed without losing quality. ...And don't neglect your outside reading. You need to be reading outside your own genre and your own century to pick up, as it were, new (or old) plugins for your filters.
Anyway. If (as it seems) you're in this for the long term: get right down here with the rest of us and suffer your way (briefly) through it. We all agonize unnecessarily over the effectiveness of our process from time to time. The only cure is to say "fuck that noise" to the back of your Writer's Mind, and get back to the actual writing, where these problems are worked out in the only way that counts.
So: go do your thing, and let the chips fall where they may. And I hope this has helped! Let me know, over time, how things go.
*This situation is also, BTW, a bit of a problem for a writer in a career stage like mine. In an inversion of the usual rule—where "the Perfect becomes the enemy of the (Merely) Good"—the "Really Not Bad At All" becomes the enemy of the "Could Have Been Way Better If You'd Given It A 'Should I Maybe Sweat Over This A Little More?' Pass". Because the Not Bad At All genuinely isn't... but if you're not careful, you stop seeing where to kick it into the next stage when you're distracted by all the other junk going on in life.
**...But this is one of the downsides of the community, and communality, of the writing life online. We wind up endlessly looking over each others' shoulders to try to find answers that—in many cases—were already sitting between us and the screen, on the keyboard.
(And now a suggestion for those who find these occasional excursions into the Advice Barrel useful: at various folks' request, I have a Ko-Fi now. If you find the advice useful and you feel so inclined, send me a sign.) :)

Thanks you for answering!
NOW i'm more curious about Dick and N!D . You say that he's one shz hates the most, why? Is this because of the whole incident with Damian or is it because something else?
And i 'm really expecting the moment when everybody will finally know that N!D hate them so much (or is distant wirh a lot of them). Who will be the most hurt/angry about that? I think that will be a hard blow for Dick because it seems to me that Lucia try to be civilised with him and as he didn't pay too much attention to her ,did he think they on good terms ? How will he react with her if he know?
Sorry if there are too much question but i really love this concept/wip(?) And i'm eager to see your other ideas or blurb for this😊!
Oh boy, i'm so glad you asked that..👀😈
She feels this way with Dick for many small reasons, but the main one absolutely revolves from the murder attempt from Damian. Because Dick, although not maliciously, he handled it terribly. And I mean, terribly.
Before that, N! Daughter admired Dick, even. He was the main reason she took gymnastic classes and tried so hard on them. To impress him. To bond with him. Everyone went on and on about how he was the golden boy, such a good big brother, and she saw it too. She just wished he paid her the same amount of attention and care he had for the others..
But the thing is, Dick doesn't know how to bond with normal people. He can handle Jason, Tim, Damian and everyone else because, despite all their differences, they're the same: Soldiers. Vigilantes. All of them at some point trained and fought under Batman's shadow (some still do). They share similar stories of wounds, certain missions and the whole "risking their lives everyday at night to fight crime". That's the kind of trauma-bonding that this whole mess of a family has been built upon...and for someone who hasn't been through the same stuff as them, who doesn't understand their mission or has wore the mantles, well, Dick is clueless on how to approach them. And they might be unconsciously pushed aside because none of them know how to handle normal people. How could they, when they themselves haven't been normal in their whole lives? When they people they usually hang out with and interact are just like them?
In Dick's eyes, N! Daughter has the privilege of a safe, comfortable life, away from the danger and violence of theirs. She doesn't know the worst of it. And it's fine. But Damian, little terror, he hasn't had the same luxury. Sure, he grew up in a palace with servants, but he was also forced to train from the moment he could walk and bleed for his grandfather's approval. He was never allowed to be a child. Constantly bleeding, suffering and enduring pain to be molded into the perfect little assassin his family wanted him to be. Dick feels sorry for him, and we know he becomes very fond of Damian and sort of his guardian.
Which makes him prioritise the boy's needs and emphatise with him a lot, expecting people to do the same given his traumatic past...even if it comes out at the worst moment.
After the Damian tried to kill her and left that scar, when she was recovering from the still fresh wound, holding a bloodied bandage over her neck, Dick visited her at her room. She wasecstasic, so happy to have her big brother that she admired back then check on her. He sat beside her and told her the this:
"(Name), look, what Damian did was a terrible mistake. He didn't meant to, but he’s had a very difficult life with some awful people. It's not really his fault. I promise you that he won't do it again. Just please, forgive him."
As he spoke, a ringing began to grow and grow in her ears, until she could no longer hear him. Her mind going over and over what he said. She just nodded silently, the pain of the wound keeping her from talking (but also because she didn't trust herself to talk without insulting and cursing him) She didn't even feel when he retracted his hand from her shoulder as soon as she nodded. "Thank you (Name), knew you would understand. He's not really a bad kid, you'll see. He just needs some love and proper guidance to change his ways. We'll talk again when you're better, okay?" He said, moving away from her, obviously distracted. She didn't bother nodding again. She already knew he wouldn't come back.
That's what cemented her disgust for him. Not only the fact he spent the following days spending time with Damian (who by the way, never apologised or shower remorse for what he did), but how he just stood there and told a girl to her damn eyes who had just suffered a murder attempt in her sleep that she had to "be understanding" and basically be the "bigger person" with her attacker. With the blood still in her bandage.
That conversation didn’t just hurt, it broke something inside her. She realized then that no one in the family would choose her, that she only had her mom and the twins. And, in her mind, Dick wasn’t just complicit; he's a symbol of everything wrong with their dynamic.
The first time she tells this story is to Duke, when he gathers courage to ask her why she can't stand Dick, why she always tenses when he talks to her and avoids looking at him, despite being apparently the reliable, loving big brother of all. Needless to say, he's shocked…and angry on her behalf.
"I was holding my neck together with a damn bandage, and instead of asking me how I was feeling, instead of holding Damian accountable, he asked me to understand him."
In her mind, it sounded like:
"You’re the sacrifice. You’re the one who has to be stronger. You’re the one who has to forgive and move on. Because he’s more important"
And best part? Dick has no idea how deeply he hurt her. He thinks of that moment as a difficult conversation where he tried to make peace between his siblings, to what was best for everyone because Damian was still fresh out of the League's influence and he didn't know better. He doesn’t realize that it was the moment she gave up on him, and maybe the whole family.
He's used to be everyone's reliable big brother, the sunshine boy, so you can guess his surprise when he realises his sister avoids being in the same room as him and never smiles around him. When the little girl he remembers always lighted up when he spoke to her and went out of her way to get his attention...what happened? Where did that adorable little girl go? Can he get her back?

Beta Reading and Fanfiction
I’ve been writing for a long time myself, but it’s only been very recently that I’ve immersed myself in communities online for it. I’ve been having so much fun really diving into Danny Phantom and DPxDC fanfic, and I’ve met so many great friends doing so.
I mostly do my own writing, but I’ve really enjoyed doing some beta reading as well, especially for friends! There’s something so fun about getting to dive into a work in progress and help where you can.
But I do feel like some people might really struggle to understand how to beta read, or what makes a good beta reader— especially where fanfiction is concerned. I’ve been extremely fortunate to have wonderful beta readers, but I’ve had some friends frustrated with the beta reading they’ve in turn received, or otherwise feeling uncomfortable in asking for a beta reader since they don’t know what to expect.
So, how should beta reading work? How do you do a good job?
Above all, the most important thing about beta reading is communication with your author. You are not in their WIP to prove how good of a writer you are, or to hammer their work into what you would personally be proud to present online. You are there to help, in whatever way the author has asked or communicated they're comfortable with.
Before you beta read anything it is vital to ask what the author is looking for in a beta reader. There are a number of things you can ask in particular, including:
What are you looking for help with?
Do you just want me to look for typos or confusing sentences?
Do you want suggestions for things to add?
Do you want suggestions on grammar, or other more in-depth writing suggestions?
Do you need help with characterization, or even the plot?
Depending on who you are beta reading for, you might have someone who only wants a very light beta touch. They might just want you to look for glaring mistakes, or for confirmation that a plot beat makes sense.
Other authors might want something much more involved! They might be trying to improve their grammar, or perhaps they're not very familiar with writing a new character and they would like suggestions for how to better capture their voice.
Regardless of what an author wants in a beta reader, you won't know unless you ask them! It's possible that you simply might not be compatible as beta reader and author, depending on their answer, and there's nothing wrong with that. It's okay to step back and say "I personally like to beta read things more in depth than this, so I might not be the best person to give it a look."
Otherwise, getting an answer about your author's preferences can help you figure out how to help them. Perhaps you would normally make more suggestions, but if an author has specified that they're not comfortable with that, then it's not your job as their beta reader to do so. If you are capable of sticking to the help they've asked for, then you will ultimately be fulfilling your role as their beta reader admirably.
"But I'm just trying to help. Their work has a lot of places it could improve!"
Again, beta reading is not about shaping a story into something you would personally present as your writing. It is about helping the author produce a story they're comfortable with and proud of.
It's not about being right, or heavily criticizing their writing and grammar abilities (unless this is what the author has explicitly requested!)
Especially while writing fanfiction, the work presented is not something that will ever see publishing, or that needs to have flawless grammar and syntax. This is work done for free, and it is done for fun.
And that's something very vital to beta reading—
A beta reader needs to preserve the fun.
It's very daunting, putting your work out there for others. It's especially daunting putting your work up for analysis of any kind. You're accepting that people might not understand your vision, or may judge you for what you've written.
It's all too easy to compare yourself to other creatives online, and to overthink and overanalyze your talents. Too often, it’s easy to get discouraged and feel like your work isn’t good enough.
Beta reading should never be done in a way that will discourage writing. Even if an author has asked for a lot of help, it’s important to pick your battles with what you choose to analyze, and to check in with them if you feel like you might be crossing boundaries or covering their work in too much metaphorical red ink.
When people are trying to improve their writing, you don’t always have to mark every little suggestion you think of. Unless the author is a friend you know well, or has explicitly asked for Extreme measures of help, it might be best to ignore some smaller writing issues and focus instead on bigger things.
If you’ve already marked a lot of issues in one paragraph, but have more things you could say, consider if the additional suggestions are vital or if it might be better to leave them be. After all, if your author is looking to improve, and if you are planning to beta read for them again in the future, then helping them with more glaring issues now will help them in a way that is not overwhelming, and will open the door for other kinds of suggestions to be better understood and absorbed.
You can always check in with your author if you’re unsure, too. Ask them if they appreciate the amount of suggestions you’ve given them, or if it’s been too much. Your author might be uncomfortable with telling you that they’re overwhelmed, and checking in is a good way to ensure that you’re both on the same page.
All that being said, though, it is also important to not always focus on things to fix and improve. You’re not just editing the story, you’re reading it. Part of keeping beta reading fun is engaging in that story as any reader would. It both helps morale, and helps let the author know what they’re doing right, when you take the time to tell them what you enjoy about the work you’re beta reading!
There are so many ways you can express positive things about an author’s writing. Consider:
“I love how you phrased this sentence here.”
“This body language feels natural and very in character!”
“I love this word choice here.”
“This part was really funny and had me laughing.”
“I’m excited to see where this goes!”
You’re reading a story, and you must have thoughts and feelings on it outside of suggestions. Let your author know! People thrive on positive feedback, and there’s just as much to be gained in marking Positive attributes to a story as there is in noting places to improve.
The last major thing I feel is vital to beta reading is respecting that it is your author’s work, and that your suggestions (however clever or helpful you feel they are) may be rejected. And that that is okay.
Suggestions are just that— suggestions.
What you might like in creative writing might not necessarily be what your author wants to express. You might love to use ellipses, or lots of different dialogue tags, while your author might prefer dashes and more standard dialogue tags. You might like to use more colorful descriptions of scenery and atmosphere, while your author might want to focus much more on the character body language and dialogue. You might like to use a lot of exclamation points and next to no italics, while your author might like a lot of italics and very little exclamation points.
You’re ultimately two different people, with two different ideas of what is an ideal way to tell a story. And while you can give many different suggestions on just about anything the author might add, remove, or change, it’s ultimately the author’s choice whether or not they accept those changes.
It’s not your job as a beta reader to double down and insist that they accept a specific suggestion. It’s not your job to make a case for why you think they need to change something. If an author has denied a suggestion— it’s best to let it go. Especially if you don’t know them well, and don’t have a very good rapport with them, pushing the issue will only serve to make you both uncomfortable.
It’s not just about picking your battles, but also about mutual respect. You’re not a teacher, nor an editor looking to make their work prime for publishing. You have to respect their decisions for their own story, even if that means they decide not to take a suggestion you felt would be impactful.
It’s also always important to keep in mind that writing style, particularly where creative writing is concerned, can vary wildly. The strict rules that you learn in school were made to be broken. You learn them to figure out how to break them and, particularly when writing for fun, it doesn’t even matter if you’re breaking those rules in a perfect way. It’s fanfiction. It’s freeform, it’s fun. If someone wants to make a habit out of going buckwild with their writing style, there’s really no reason to try and corral their writing into a box labeled “High School English 101”.
You can’t force someone to write their fanfiction like it’s going to go to a letter grade, nor should you try to unless they’re looking for that level of editing.
Be willing to listen, and pay attention to what is and isn’t working. It’s good to take note of suggestions that your author has already commented on. Have they thanked you for pointing out something in particular? Have they expressed they feel weak with something in their writing?
Is there a type of suggestion that you keep making that they have rejected multiple times?
Work with their strengths and with their style. Focus on suggestions that have been received well, and consider letting go of ones that the author clearly has no interest in, or that might conflict with their style.
Communicate and respect each other, above all else.
Beta reading is such a helpful and wonderful thing someone can do for an author. I’ve been so thankful to have it done for my own work, and I try my best to be helpful and considerate when I’ve beta read myself.
Having my work beta read has really helped me find things to improve upon in my writing, and has helped me feel more confident in the stories I’ve posted, just having another eye look over them before they hit the internet. I don’t always take all of their suggestions, and might disagree from time to time with the direction they want something to go in, but I’ve been thankful to have understanding, kind betas that work with me well.
And that’s one more point I want to touch on too, is that I hope that, as a beta reader, you find yourself with authors that show you mutual respect in turn. That they thank you for the work you’ve put in to help them succeed, and have made the experience positive for you as well.
It always makes me happy to see beta readers credited on posted works. It’s a kind thing for writers to show appreciation, and to acknowledge that someone helped shape the words you see on the page.
This got much longer than I intended it to, but I just hope that this post might help some people in some way. Either to understand beta reading and the purpose of it, or how to potentially go about it themselves.
I really recommend giving beta reading a try if you’re comfortable with it, especially if you have friends that write fanfiction! Even just an extra pair of eyes looking for typos can be a godsend for someone who has spent hours upon hours staring at a long fic and editing it.

I'm really struggling with motivation and haven't touched any of my WIPs in a couple weeks. Do you have any tips on staying motivated?
Every writer knows that feeling of demotivation, when the words just won’t come, and opening your work-in-progress feels like an insurmountable task. It’s hard not to feel the draw of the TV show everyone else is watching or that book that everyone is raving about when you’re faced with a blank page. So how do you stay motivated to write?
It’s completely normal to experience periods of low motivation, but there are always strategies you can try to help you get back on track.
Understand what’s really blocking you
When we’re not motivated to write, we often label it as writer’s block. It’s a catch-all term that lets us put a label on how we’re feeling. We get to blame our lack of motivation on some ephemeral writer’s malady, when usually it’s something concrete and fixable. Before trying to force yourself back to writing, take a moment to identify what’s really holding you back:
Are you stuck on a particular plot point?
Has your inner critic become too loud?
Are you overwhelmed by the scope of your project?
Have you lost connection with your story’s core idea?
Are you physically or mentally exhausted?
All of these are valid, and very real reasons why we might experience writer’s block. But understanding the root cause can help you choose the most effective strategy to overcome it and stay motivated.
Create a sustainable writing routine
Motivation is unreliable, but habits are powerful. We can trick our brains into staying motivated just by having a routine that we expect to follow. It stops us overthinking things and keeps us grounded in the physical activity. Instead of waiting for inspiration to strike, you could try to:
Set aside a specific time for writing each day, even if it’s just 15 minutes.
Create a dedicated writing space that’s free from distractions.
Develop pre-writing rituals that signal to your brain it’s time to work.
Track your progress to build momentum.
Celebrate small wins along the way.
Remember, you don’t need to write for hours. Consistent small sessions are often more productive than irregular marathon writing. You can build a routine that works for you. If you can only write for 20 minutes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, then that’s fine. But set aside time that is there for writing that isn’t just “when I feel like it.”
Connect with your story again
Sometimes we lose motivation because we’ve lost touch with what excited us about our story in the first place. A fresh idea might come along and pull us in a different direction. We might even find ourselves in a different mental state that means the original idea isn’t as appealing as it once was. When this happens, first, examine whether you genuinely want to continue with the project you’re working on. If the spark is really gone, then there is no shame in shelving the project and working on something new. But if you know you want to continue, then you can try these techniques to rekindle that spark and stay motivated to write:
Reread your favourite scenes.
Write character backstories and do some worldbuilding, just for fun.
Create a mood board or playlist for your story.
Set a timer, and freewrite about why this story matters to you.
Imagine telling someone about your book in an interview and write out your answers.
Revisiting your story in a way that goes beyond the work of it can make a world of difference when trying to reconnect.
Find your community
Writing doesn’t have to be a solitary pursuit. Having support can make a huge difference in staying motivated. Seeing someone else get excited about your story, or genuinely helping you to improve it can be a massive part of staying motivated. You could try to:
Join a writing group or find a writing buddy to bounce ideas off and give each other critiques.
Share your goals with someone who will hold you accountable. There’s no bigger motivator than having to justify your lack thereof to someone else.
Participate in writing challenges or events. A deadline and a shared goal can be a great push to get some writing done.
Consider working with a writing coach or mentor. This won’t work for everyone, but for some people, the structure really helps.
Change your perspective on motivation
Instead of viewing motivation as something you need before you can write, try seeing it as something that comes from writing. I’m often not in the mood to write when I sit down at my desk, but once I get started, I almost always get in flow. Some ways to shift your mindset might be to:
Focus on process over product. Enjoy the act of writing and worry less about the finished product.
Give yourself permission to write imperfectly. There’s no such thing as a perfect first draft. Hating your writing is the biggest demotivator, but just remember, everyone’s first draft is terrible compared to what gets published.
Set achievable goals that build confidence. This means keeping your goals realistic and not setting yourself up to fail. A goal as simple as 10 words a day means you can see progress, instead of having something huge and unattainable looming over you.
When motivation simply isn’t there
Sometimes, despite our best efforts, motivation remains elusive. And sometimes it’s ok to not stay motivated, and there are usually good reasons for that. If you really can’t get back into the swing of things, then be gentle with yourself and try the following to make sure that this is really the project for you:
Take a deliberate, guilt-free break.
Set a specific date to return to your project.
Use the time off to refill your creative well through reading or other activities.
If journaling is something that works for you, write about your writing struggles and try to interrogate them.
Consider if your project needs to evolve in a new direction.
If you’ve tried the above (or some personal variation of it) and you still don’t have the motivation to keep going on your project, then it might be time to shelve it and move onto another project that does excite you. Sometimes you just can’t force creativity.
Practical exercises to boost motivation
Write a letter from your future self celebrating completing your project. Seal it, and only open it when you get to the finish line.
Set a timer for 5 minutes and write anything. Starting is often the hardest part.
Create a “done list” instead of a to-do list to recognise your progress and take focus away from the tasks still ahead of you.
Interview your characters about where they want the story to go. It’s fun and helps spark ideas.
Write something else for a little while to give yourself a break from just working on the one project.
Remember, motivation isn’t a constant state. It’s normal for it to come and go. The key is building systems and habits that help you continue making progress, even when it’s hard to stay motivated. Trust that your story is worth telling, and keep showing up for it, one word at a time.

Bucky and Steve running across Logan and meeting Wade and Laura in the process
(x)
Logan was out shopping when he heard a whisper "Lucky James." And smelled familiar scents. It's Barnes and Rogers, he knows immediately his plans for the day are going to be postponed.
He just sighs and walks towards an alley so they can talk without too many onlookers. They stand at the opening of the alley with crossed arms and wide eyes. Logan just puts his arms out to the side as if he's showing off.
"It's been a while." Logan acknowledges.
"A WHILE?!" Rogers half shouts, "How are you not old It's been close to a century?" Barnes asks.
Logan just raised an eyebrow at them, "I could ask you the same thing but I know the answer to that." Logan points out.
"Of course you know the answer everyone knows did they enhance you too?" Rogers asks and Logan shakes his head. "Nah I don't need enhancements I was born this way." Logan says with a shrug.
"Explain." Barnes orders and Logan does. "I'm a mutant."
Barnes and Rogers share a look. "So what are you just slow to age?" Barnes asks. Logan smirks, "Kinda It's more like I have a healing factor the likes of which you've never seen. With a few other things." Logan tacks the last part on like an afterthought.
"What do you mean?" Rogers asks. Logan chuckles to himself, "For all intents and purposes I'm immortal. I was there when the bombs dropped in Japan and I'm still here."
Barnes and Rogers looked shell-shocked.
"I'm twice as old as both of you." Logan adds just because he can.
This seems to break them slightly. "Do you want to get lunch with us so we can catch up?" Barnes asks and Logan shrugs. "If you pay with that Stark money." Logan offers, and they agree.
They go to one of Logan's favorite places Wade had shown him and he takes their normal booth in the corner. The waitresses greet him happily and he smiles and waves back. It's very different from the world he was in and he'd like to keep it that way.
Barnes and Rogers couldn't keep their eyes off him like if they looked way he might just up and disappear. He understood but couldn't really relate.
"H-how have you been what have you been doing?" Rogers asked and what a question to start with. He might as well rip the bandage off now.
"I'm not your Lucky James." He says completely ignoring that question for now. "Also it's Logan now has been for a while."
They stare blankly and he continues.
"The man you served with isn't me he died a while ago. I'm from another universe a far shittier one of my own making. I was brought here as a replacement for the man you knew."
"...what?" Barnes breathed sounding a bit heartbroken.
"It's complicated and I don't know the full story, but you need to understand I'm not the same person you knew. It is most likely that we had the exact same experiences, but you are not my Barnes and Rogers and I am not your Logan."
"What happened to him?" Rogers asked.
"He sacrificed himself to save some kids. He was a hero and a legend to those who knew him." Logan answered.
"And you're not?" Rogers asked, sharp as a tack that one.
"Not in my world. I did a lot of bad things got real mad...lost control...... I'm not like the other Logan my story differs after the X-Men."
"You are an X-man?" Barnes asked and Logan looked away.
"Your Logan was. I am just a disgrace who couldn't accept I needed to get over myself."
Barnes's eyes lit up as he connected dots, "You're Wolverine." Steve's head wipped towards Logan as he also realized.
Logan nodded.
"Well, the question still stands How are you and what have you been doing?" Steve asks and Logan smiles slightly.
"Better, I have a new purpose and shot at life thanks to Wade. I'm doing jobs with the maniac and living a pretty normal life."
"Who's Wade?" Barnes asked with a raised brow. Logan smiles he can't help it. "My fiance. He's the one who brought me here, but that's a long complicated story that I promise isn't that interesting." Logan answered with a shrug.
"You said you did jobs. You want to specify?" Rogers asked and Logan rolled his eyes.
"We work for the TVA which is something I'm not going to get into and normal merc shit." Logan says offhandedly.
Rogers splutters his drink and Barnes looks interested. "Would I know Wade?" Barnes  asks and Logan smirks, "Definitely." They give their orders as the waitress comes and Logan gets a call.
He answers with a surprisingly soft, "Hey kit." That has Barnes and Rogers looking at one another eyes wide.
"Yeah yeah, we're at our favorite place." A pause. "Yeah ok, do you want your usual?" Another pause, "Ok see you in a bit bye."
The waitress raises an eyebrow at Logan, "Does she want her usual?" Logan nods and she scratches something else down before leaving.
"What was that?" They ask at the same time and Logan just smiles. "The main reason your Logan sacrificed himself is coming." He says and he sounds so incredibly fond.
They talk for a while longer until Logan perks up and the super soldiers turn to see what Logan's looking at.
It's a young lady who looks so much like Logan all of the questions they have are answered after just a glance.
"Come here kit." Logan calls his voice seeming to vibrate like a purr. The lady makes her way to the seat next to Logan smiling.
"Hi, papá." She greets her voice vibrating the same way. Logan throws an arm over her shoulder and squeezes before letting her go.
Rogers is trying and failing to speak as Barnes just stares. "This is Laura." Logan introduces and Barnes manages to get himself under control first.
"Nice to meet you Laura you can call me Bucky that's Steve." He sounds only slightly breathy which is impressive. Logan knows full well this is one of the last things they expected.
"I know." She says flatly and Rogers can't help the bark of laughter that escapes him. That's definitely Logan's daughter no doubt about it. Barnes seemed to have a similar reaction but managed to only snicker.
Logan doesn't even hide the shit-eating smile that crosses his face.
"Did Wade follow you?" Logan asked and Laura rolled her eyes. "He said he wouldn't so I give it 30 minutes until he shows up." Logan nods along like he expected this answer.
Barnes seemed to remember what Logan had said about this being the reason they're Logan had sacrificed himself as he looked at her closer.
"You're our Logan's kid." He stated more than asked. Rogers jerked in his seat as he too recalled that. Laura just sighed. Barnes suddenly felt like shit. Logan however didn't seem upset or annoyed at him.
"Yes, but I'm technically a clone. They took his DNA during the Weapons X program. I'm an attempt at recreating the perfect weapon." She said as she gestured at Logan who looked pissed off at the reminder.
There was a lot there that Rogers and Barnes hadn't heard yet none of which sounded good.
"I miss Dad but his sacrifice wasn't in vain. I have another life now a better one just like he wanted." She answered easily. Rogers and Barnes nodded sagely It definitely made them feel better knowing that their friend had sacrificed himself to save his daughter.
"I don't know how much you want to answer but what exactly was Weapons X?" Barnes asked the both of them.
Logan answered, "It was an organization that prays on mutants. It really started with me they tricked me into getting adamantium adhered to my bones before...well...they made me into the perfect weapon and took away my free will."
Laura leaned into him and Logan welcomed it smiling softly at her before continuing, "I was the tenth attempt and the first success. I eventually escaped, But they couldn't let it go so they tried cloning me." He breathed out.
Laura picked up from there, "I'm the 23rd attempt." She answered with a shrug. "Weapons X has been taken down but there's still offshoots that's what got pop."
Logan growled softly. "Fucking Francis." He snarled. Barnes seemed to look like he might be connecting some dots but couldn't quite put the whole picture together.
They were interrupted by the food being delivered. They talk for a while longer about less touchy issues after that, Laura even explaind what it's like in the mansion. That is until a while later when the diner goes silent and Logan and Laura perk up.
Rogers and Barnes reluctantly turn to see Deadpool sans his normal outfit. As he makes his way to the back booth where they are sitting. People he passes scramble out the door behind him.
Most of the waiters and waitresses look nervous, but he pays them no mind as he makes his way over. Rogers and Barnes prepare for a fight. "Peanut Mini, how are we doing?" He chirped.
Laura starts purring, "Pop." She greeted. "Thought you said you weren't going to follow the kit darling?" Logan asked his voice warbling the same way Laura's was.
"And let you two have all the fun? Please!" He rolled his eyes. He then turned and finally looked at the other two men and his eyes went wide.
Logan lunged at him covering his mouth, "Don't you dare scream Wade." He threatened as he pulled him down into the other open chair next to him.
Laura just laughed and Logan glared at her. Eventually, Wade managed to wiggle out of Logan's grasp, "OMG CAPTAIN AMERICA MY HERO!" He cried.
Rogers looked distinctly uncomfortable, "YOU KNEW I WANTED TO BE EXACTLY LIKE YOU WHEN I GREW UP DESPITE THE FACT I AM CANADIAN!" Wade exclaimed excitedly.
Rogers wanted to point out the fact that he ended up the exact opposite of him but didn't. His face however must have conveyed this because Deadpool answered." I KNOW I DIDN'T QUITE MANAGE IT BUT I GOT PRETTY CLOSE!"
Steve went to speak but Bucky was quick to speak over him because he had questions. He had never dared get close to Deadpool he was terrifying but now seemed like a perfect time.
"What do you mean by pretty close? I mean you're known for taking any job with a high enough pay?" He didn't ask rudely just really pointing out a fact in the underground.
Wade turned his attention to him, "Well sure But it's mainly bad people, Hell I'm quite warm-blooded for a merc. Besides when you're the best at what you do you end up taking the dirty jobs." And then as an afterthought tacked on, "And I do like money how else am I supposed to buy cocaine?"
"Al does love her cocaine." Laura agreed and Logan nodded along with that train of thought.
Rogers looked like he might explode and Logan looked lovestruck. The soldiers wondered distinctly what Logan saw in this maniac.
"What do you mean warm-blooded?" Barnes asked.
"Well, sometimes when kids get desperate they come to get help through unorthodox means. Most people don't touch it because the pay isn't good." Deadpool explained easily.
That seemed...actually pretty sweet which was surprising for someone like Deadpool.
"Besides I mainly take hits on drug lords, child traffickers, rapists, murderers, and the other unsavory," Deadpool answers easily and Logan nods at that confirming it.
The conversations continue and surprisingly Deadpool or Wade actually seems... Okay. Logan is enamored with him and it's understandable he has a charm to him if you can get over his...eccentricities.
Laura also clearly loves him and that's enough for them. They plan to have lunch at some later point. They pay and Wade leaves a generous tip...like a couple hundred dollars generous. The waitress seems to know him and thanks him with a smile. And just like that the trio is gone.
Steve and Bucky make their way back to the tower as they try to figure out how to explain the encounter they just had with the other Avengers.
"So where have you been?" Tony asks the moment they appear in the main area. The two share a look, "We met an old friend and caught up."
"Old friend, how old was he 90?" Clint asks from the couch. Bucky chuckles, "Actually he's much older than that. We had no idea though turns out he's a mutant."
Everyone pauses at that and looks over to them all asking them to continue with just a glance.
"Super enhanced healing factor It's as immortal as it sounds." Steve answered.
"Yeah?" Tony asked eyes gleaming with excitement.
"Yeah, but it's complicated and it turns out he has a kid and fiance." Steve answered easily.
"With immortality? that sounds painful." Tony asked seeming haunted at the idea of outliving Pepper and Morgan.
Bucky chuckled, "Funny thing that they're also immortal."
Everyone paused, "How did that happen?" Bruce asked.
"Both are experiments from his DNA." Barnes revealed.
Tony and Bruce shared a look, "Is there any way we can meet them?" Tony asked excitedly.
Bucky and Steve shared a glance, "Well...sure but.." Steve trailed off.
"One of them is Deadpool." Barnes finished.
Natasha and Clint seemed to jump a foot in the air out of shock alone.
"WHAT?!" They both shouted in shock.
(I plan on posting this tomorrow to Ao3)

Okay, so it was a month since my last BATFAMILY fic recs set, but in my defense a) huge life changes and b) I did a quick count up of how many recs I had built up and it was literally well over a million words. A million words! In one recs set! And this is like the seventh one of these that I've done! And I still have at least a thousand fics on my reader that I haven't started! Because this fandom has seriously not just consumed my brain, but given me absolutely amazing stuff to read that scratches all the itches I desperately have--well, okay, scratches the itch I have for my Dick Grayson Problem, but same thing.
I've really needed some escapism lately and being able to laugh or cry or just sink into a nice, long novella or even novel-length fic has really been a godsend has done a lot to soothe me and help me process feelings that sometimes otherwise can feel too overwhelming to deal with. All while also giving me the exploration of issues or decompression time with the characters' issues that the canon itself doesn't have the space for. So, I hope this list can give others something to read in the way it has given me so much that I've loved and brought me joy or emotional catharsis, because fandom has been really incredible about Bringing The Good Stuff and I want to repay the favor!

✦ The Waking World by Fairy527, dick & bruce, 2.2k     This isn’t the first time Dick has gone to Bruce after a nightmare. However, this is the first time his nightmare has involved Bruce's murder at his own hands, and it doesn't settle well.
✦ More Alike Than You'll Ever Admit coffeeandchocolate, dick & bruce, 1.2k     Dick Grayson has always been there alongside Batman. After Bruce returns from being lost in time, he and his eldest argue.
✦ Almost, Nearly by CKBookish, dick & bruce & jason & cast, 8.1k     Dick was just supposed to go with him to lunch. He wasn't supposed to get shot. ✦ Temporary by daringyounggrayson, bruce & dick & alfred & cast, 14.8k     The double homicide at Haly’s Circus is not Bruce’s first case involving a child, and while there's no overt indication that Bruce should react differently to this case, he supposes that his previous cases did not involve the witness known as Dick Grayson. ✦ To the Moving and the Strange by SilverSkiesAtMidnight, dick & bruce & alfred & tim & cast, 6k     Thankfully, Alfred tips his head in acknowledgement. “I do,” he agrees. “I remember a great many things. But I have forgotten things too, and I expect as time goes on, more of them will slip away from me, and it’s entirely possible that I won’t even notice they’re gone. My memories of them will simply be… less.” Dick looks at him, studying the lines of his weathered face. “Does that ever make you feel like... like if you loved them more, you’d remember them?”

Oh gosh thank you for the tag physics, I'll make a post about my wips too, all art of course, but before I do that I need to know more aboit this one:
"I’ll build castles for you, my love (look at me, not my brother)"
All of the wips sound lovely, can't wait for them🫶
Aaaaa, @skullfacedlady I can't wait to see what you're working on! 💕🫶🏻❤️
Oh, "I'll build castles for you, my love (look at me not my brother)"
(sighs wistfully)
This is my baby. The original. The LEGEND. The one that started it all with the Rosinante's Wife!Reader trope. Where to even start with this one? First, I'd like to link all the posts I've made up until now about this fic, it includes scenes, as well, if you want to read them.
Snippets of Doflamingo x Reader in the fic ie first ever post of the fic, the og, the LEGEND
Things Doflamingo does & says in "I’ll build castles for you, my love"
Things Rosinante does/says in the fic + Rosinante’s thoughts before he dies scene snippet
Rosinante’s Crew (Crow Corps), scenes with them + scene of Doflamingo interacting with them after Rosi’s death
More scenes from the fic, including Rosinante x Reader Scene, Rosinante & Law Scene, Doflamingo x Reader Scene
Another Doflamingo x Reader scene from the fic
How Doffy shows acts of care for Reader by providing financially for her in the fic (though this is overall for his character)
Now, let's start on explaining some more about it. The title is inspired by that thought I had when I looked at these two Donquixotes side-by-side. Like. Reaaally looked. They look very similar to each other. Their faces are nearly exactly the same at FIRST GLANCE (they have distinctive differences but a normal person wouldn't notice that from a simple glance). Usually people would say Rosinante looks like Doflamingo, except here, you meet Rosinante first.
So to you, Doflamingo resembles Rosinante when his hair is down. It's only a second, but your eyes completely change for that split moment when you think he's Rosinante. And Doflamingo notices this - it's very easily noticeable. And it fckn... Annoys him. A lot 🤣. Bcs Doflamingo was never told "oh you look like your brother" it was Rosinante who always experienced that sentence. So it's a real punch in the gut for Doffy, including his pride. Especially as he falls in love with Reader. Reader has (understandably) preconceptions about Doflamingo. So Doflamingo needs to break that preconcepted image Reader has of him so she can truly see him. It's a new experience for him.
The fic, originally, at its first outline, was only Doflamingo x Reader. But then I wanted to flesh out the entire story and Rosinante & Law happened, and they became their own chapters, and fit into the story so well, and it was my first attempt at Rosinante x Reader and damn it pulled on my heartstrings.
The Doflamingo in this fic is the Dressrosa Takeover Doflamingo (he hasn't taken over Dressrosa yet at all when he meets Reader, he simply cuts his hair short and changes his entire style after entering the Grand Line in this fic)
Tumblr media
Why?
BECAUSE I ADORE HIM. He is HANDSOME AS HELL. WOW. JUST. WOW. And I needed to write sth with him and the idea just came. He still has a bit of his upward spikes, so when they go down they cover his forehead probably exactly like Rosinante's. And that fucks up your mind. It's an absolute mindfuck.
The story can be separated in 4 Arcs, which are for now the chapter titles.
The Marine - Chapter 1
Rosinante x Reader - it spans throughs years of Rosinante's life in the marines + meeting Reader & getting married, ends with him going on the Donquixote Pirates Mission
The Sick Boy - Chapter 2
There are 3 weeks of emptiness between when Doflamingo tells Rosinante about the Op-Op Fruit and Minion Island. These three weeks are all in Chapter 2, where Rosinante takes Law to you so you two can care for him and keep him alive. It focuses on Law, Rosinante's death (the only Minion Island scene for now), and Law's journey back to you to tell you the truth of what happened - with a polar bear and two boys sneaking into the submarine with him on the way 🤣. It ends with Rosinante's funeral and Law officially forming the Heart Pirates. ❤️‍🔥
The Warlord - Chapter 3
Doflamingo x Reader - This one is finally very much Reader's POV focused, with a bit of Doflamingo's POV as well. This part covers the next nine months of Reader's pregnancy, and Doflamingo's visits to Marineford during the weekends. There are so many things here — fluff, angst, hurt/comfort, domestic life, humor, Doflamingo singing while he cooks in a pink apron with a flamingo drawn on it with "Kiss the flamingo 🦩"... Doflamingo knocking on your window drenched like a pink cat and stripping naked while your back is turned, Doflamingo being an absolute demon you should not mess with (but you do) but also a soft three meter meow meow . Also the best support during pregnancy. Seriously. He's great at that part. Also. Doflamingo's charming smiles. Doflamingo's puppy eyes. Doflamingo's. Fucking. Puppy eyes. Damn him (I say lovingly)
The King - Chapter 4
Doflamingo x Reader - Follows post-childbirth after Reader & Rosinante's child is born, and the next two years of Doflamingo & Reader raising the child and eventually the fall of Dressrosa and Doflamingo becoming its king... I can't say too much for this one cus I don't want to spoil it too much, but... It's good. So good. And is the last chapter of the story with a Happy Ending for Doflamingo x Reader. Also, 100% will try to write some smut for this chap, bcs I neeeed it at this point. 😩
Here is the summary I made for Doflamingo's Part ie The Warlord Part when I first thought this would just be a one-shot (ha, fool!)
Summary: To Donquixote Doflamingo, family is everything. A month after Rosinante’s death, Vergo delivers him damning information after he’d ordered a full deep dive into Rosinante’s fourteen years of absence — his brother had gotten married years ago. And not only that, his brother’s wife is pregnant. Doflamingo does something both impertinent and bold, just as any pirate — he enters the Grand Line with one goal — become a warlord, meet you, and be there for you during your pregnancy. He makes history, stealing and robbing Heavenly Tributes almost every few days, conquering the Grand Line and its underworld — and is made a warlord the next month.
As the pink flowers on the single pink cherry blossom tree in Marineford sway in the wind, so do the pink feathers of Doflamingo’s coat as he steps foot on Marineford a few days later to attend a meeting with the higher-ups — and meet you.
You don't need the curse of his protection or his blood money, or want him in your child’s life — your husband would roll in his grave. However, as a former Celestial Dragon and now a warlord, Doflamingo gains permission to visit you on weekends in Marineford, and not even Fleet Admiral Sengoku can do anything about him as the orders come from "up high". The newly appointed warlord is just as your husband described him as - stubborn, sadistic, enjoys mocking people, laughs at their suffering, and a manipulating schemer. As the warlord forces you to spend more time with him, you realise there is more to the older Donquixote than your late husband told you.
I'm trying to figure out which scene to send...
How about... The first meeting?
Excerpt:
You were about to tell Tsuru they brought the wrong pirate to meet you, but then, your gaze reached his face. You inhaled sharply, the thought coming before you could stop it because of the eerie similarity of the chin and cheeks, and for a split second you thought it was…
Rosinante.
But his skin was tanned, a bronze colour. And his smile... It was all wrong.
That wasn’t your husband’s smile. It was too sharp, too wide, too wicked.
Doflamingo was taller than Rosinante, but gangly and long-limbed like him. He was bigger than on his wanted poster. His hair was no longer long and uplifted like a dragon’s head, but instead the spikes were shortened, sticking upward.
Your heart picked up its beat, dread spreading in your stomach.
Evil emanated from every fibre of his being.
“There you are.” said Doflamingo victoriously, smiling all the way.
***
For what song would fit the fic... (Giggles evilly)
This one, Doffy is thinking this one 24/7
I don’t want to let your body go 🎶
Be my queen, I'll be your king 🎶
We'll be rulers I'll give you everything 🎶
I'll be your king, you'll be my queen 🎶
Unbelievers get down on your knees 🎶
We can rule the world 🎶
So be my girl 🎶
Thank you for the ask! Can't wait to see what you're working on! ❤️❤️❤️

Oh boy- I've finnaly convinced myself to send my AU for the ramblings. Idk if I'd call it an au like the others, which is why I've been hesitant to send it but oh well, I adore it to bits and love any opportunity to talk about it so here I go.
It's called Monarchverse. And it's an alternate multiverse rather then just an AU. The story is a fic I'm working on, and it centers around this multiverses Ink.
Since I'm actively publishing the story, I won't give away ALL the secrets. But the main gist is that Ink, doesn't have the chance to destroy his soul. He manages to leave the dying sketches of his world before he's even grown into a toddler. Eventually, when hes seven in monster years, he's found by Nightmare. Nightmares intrigued by this strange little child that somehow psychically called out to him across worlds for "help". He doesn't know *how* but he's intrigued as to what this kid can do.
There's other reasons he takes the ink too, but for summaries sake. Basically he takes Ink to the others and Horror, Killer, Dust, and Cross now gotta deal with a very traumatized baby that Nightmare brought back.
Killer:....you want a beer?
Cross: you can't give that to him!? He's like- Four!!
Killer: WELL IDK WHAT DO WE DO WITH HIM!?!?
Horror: *silently picks up Ink while the others bicker and puts him to bed*
It's basically an exploration of Nightmare and his gang raising Ink. How that'd affect his personality along with having a soul. (Perfectly normal soul over here dw) exploring how the multiverse had functioned from its creation without Ink and the consequences. And then a bunch of other fun additional things. Like new characters, personal headcanons, and of course. Drama. So much. Everyomes gonna go through it, and when i say everyone i mean EVERYONE. I..am obsessed with this au you have no idea how badly I'm holding myself back from.dumping the entire story on my tumblr every day XD. I gotta write it all out first~
Or maybe it's just an excuse for me to write Ink driving these guys crazy? Both. Yeah it's both. Nightmare has glitter banned in the castle for a REASON. And for once that reason isn't Killer.
...Kay he's half the reason.
Edgy gloomy villian adopts rainbow hyper kid who wants to paint on his perfectly clean and dark walls. There's not enough color and goddammit Ink is gonna give this castle some.
Anyways. Here's some doodles of Ink as a bb and a wip of ink older when the main sorta big story and plot starts.
Inks magic is mainly pink bc...I said so. I love pink :3 also ignore the signature. Those are an old name.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sorry if this sounds kinda self advertising-ey. I just rlly love chances to talk about and share this au.
ITS NOT SELF ADVERTISING AT ALL! ITS SO CUTE OMG (And even if it is, I dont mind it ^^)
YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH I LOVE WHEN VILLAINS OR BAD GUY GROUPS ADOPTED A KID, IM SUCH A SUCKER FOR THAT IN STORIES AND FICS OML
Also, I LOVE THAT VIDEO! Killer would totally offer beer lol, and thank god Horror took Ink away and put him to bed, very cute ^^
Nightmare banning glitter made me laugh omg
Omg i love Ink with the pink eyes! it looks so cool! (Lol thats so valid. Pink is such a pretty color ^^), and your doodles are so good! I really love the one with Nightmare and Ink looking threatening
I would love to read this! It's so cute, and i would love to see the chaos that would happen in the castle. And im very curious about how Ink being raised by Nightmare would affect the multiverse

Tumblr media
Thanks as always for your submissions! Titles are links to each fic.
Now I Want by ramarro
“As ramarro says in the tags, it's a toxic relationship, but it's fun to write (and read!). The two stories share Kate's and then Anthony's POV of their on and off again relationship, told non-linearly from when they meet to when they finally accept that they are it for each other, for better or worse. It's sexy as hell, a bit angsty, and has its own kind of HEA. It's also so beautifully written.”
Description: If they were a normal couple, they’d talk about the pain they inflicted on each other today. They might have a productive conversation how their emotional needs weren’t being met and how they could change that. Instead, they just sit in the cab in silence, Anthony’s hand possessively on her thigh. Kate knows he must have spent that hour where she didn’t answer fuming, but she’s not going to apologise. He takes a deep breath. ‘I missed you.’ Something in her relaxes. She covers the hand on her thigh with her own.

ー STARWEB MASTERPOST‼️
OWNER/ADMIN : @foddercaptain
☆ Some information on this au and how it works. This WILL be updated overtime, tweaked, adjusted, and referred back to, at least until i start publishing everything properly!
SHORT SUMMARY:
Starweb is an original insect/bug themed Sonic/Sonadow centered AU in which all mobian characters in canon are bug counterparts to their original species! Ex: Hedgehogs = Spiders, Echidnas = Ants, Foxes = Weevils, etc. Instead of just bugs though, they are referred to as Insectians! Basically means mobians/people. This will be released in comic parts.
REFERENCE SHEETS & LINKS AT BOTTOM‼️
• What's it about? ★
The story follows primarily Sonic and Shadow in their lives as Insectians, born under very different circumstances and understanding of nature or how to live, they learn about each other and even if their opinions and ways oppose or clash sometimes they still care about one another to great extents. This is a Sonadow plot, but you can consider it more of constant slow burn, really, it's just never ending slow burn sometimes, it kills me too. This world works on a base of "survival of the fittest," meaning that animals eat bugs & bugs eat other bugs, just like reality, this does mean that characters can die and you will see some of this mentioned. Keep in mind they are quite literally just bugs, there are not powers like the characters normally would posses, natural disasters for them are just a little bit of rain to humans, similar to wind or even as drasric as forest fires. In addition, in-universe they have their own terminology for certain things, taking some inspiration from WC, A Bugs Life, & WoF.
• Terminology! (wip) ★
ー Insectians - The replacement word for mobians, refers to the general bug or population. It does not matter if the insectian in question is an insect in real life, they could be an arachnid and still be considered an insectian. EX: There was another insectian nearby.
ー Forager - An insectian who collects human-made or unnatural objects, whether for use or just having it, this includes those who make homes from said objects, EX: living in a former soup can.
ー Beastie - An insult used against vegan insectians that are not naturally vegan, this would be considered a minor slur, but it is frequently amongst those in tune with their instincts to mock those who aren't, EX: "You're a beastie."
ー Scavenger - Insectians that feed on other dead or decaying insectians. This is commonly used in phrases or insults, as being a scavenger is considered "unclean" by some, EX: "You eat like a scavenger."
ー Tamer - An insectian with the talent of taming animals that aren't bugs, such as birds or rodents.
ー Vagabond - Those insectians with adventure in their veins who cannot or do not want to stay in one place, often insectians that have little fear of their natural world and explore.
ー Dwellers - Insectians who live close to humans or inhabit human homes, this can be infestations or genuine pets with enclosures. Dwellers are commonly lacking instinctive knowledge of the wilderness depending on where they were born and lived.
ー Chao - Farmed or pet: Grub, maggots, or larvae of some kind, they are like the human equivalent of chickens as they are commonly used for an easy food source that doesn't involve hunting or killing other insectians for said food.
ー Season - Refers to someone's age or time passed in life, being in season means one is of the age of maturity, it's often used to separate old from young insectians, though this doesn't always work as bugs can be big and not be in season, they do not celebrate things like birthdays or keep track of ages. It can also be used to state an insectian is immature, EX: "For your age, you sure are out of season."
ー Maggot - Can be used as an insult towards another insectians intelligence or adolescent behavior, the replacement for idiot or stupid, it means someone's as smart as a maggot, maggots are the baby/larvae stage of some bugs such as flies, EX: "You act like a maggot."
• Story Execution ★
Starweb will consist of comics and writings! Both formats will be used to articulate whatever parts of the plot that are needed. Currently, this will be going in 3 main story arcs, they start at when Sonic and Shadow meet then go from there, it will go in order but have more of an episodic format, like different days are different adventures. I'll makes a comic page every-whenever-i-can and post them, I'll put out illustrations, one-shots, and whatnot! I'd like to include multiple mediums and hope everyone will follow and enjoy it until the finale of the story. Even once that happens, i must clarify that won't be the end of the au, there a huge pre and post-Starweb plot that exists, and i have a lot of that already figured out too, the only difference is those will branch out to more side plots and characters, such as Amy & Metal.
• Extra/FAQ! ☆
ー Yes you can make Starweb ocs or convert your ocs into Starweb!! Nothings is a closed species and if you really don't feel the current au design limitations of the bug species fit than don't be afraid to do your own thing!
ー Despite the story following Sonadow and everyone being bug sized, i do not mind fanart of your own favorite Sonic ships with my au! Prefer Sonamy? Knuxadow? Alright, you can draw starweb sonamy/knuxadow! Wanna give them clothes or accessories for fun? Cool as hell! I don't mind and would love to be tagged so i can see too, have fun! (This does not include proships, if you are making weird art of my au i will block you).
ー Curious about anything or want to submit a drawing request? Go ahead! Of course, keep it sfw, and i will see what i can do! I won't be drawing anyone else's ocs unless you are a mutual, but I'll be happy enough to draw other ideas related to the au!
ー You can in fact make fan designs for characters that have yet o be drawn or have a reference! I know the ultimately i won't be able to do every character I'd like, especially less common ones like Manic (spider) or Sally (moth), some mutuals have already done with with characters like Espio, and even prior- metal!
ー I don't mind taking inspiration off of my au, but of course if you do I'd love to see and even support ya, so please tag me if you make ocs, your own au, or anything else! If it is really heavy inspiration, then still don't be afraid to ask, i have many mutuals who have requests to so it shouldn't be a problem, i love to talk about bug characters!
ー Spider species thingy! I'll make more and better ones in the future for every species.

thank you so much for the tags, @wholahoop and @its-the-allure!!!!
how many works do you have on ao3? 132
what's your total ao3 word count? 2,386,471
your top 5 stories by kudos? Away Childish Things, The Boy Who Only Lived Twice, The Pure and Simple Truth, He Who Must Not Be Normal, Another Mask Behind You
do you respond to comments? I try very hard to respond to every single comment while posting a fic, or if it's a one-shot, every comment within the first three days. Beyond that, I really struggle.
what's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending? The Eighth Tale. I end most things either open or happy, but this is a time travel story, and the point is that there are infinite endings. But the ending we do get is pretty sad.
what's the fic you've written with the happiest ending? The End Resting Only On Air. This is actually the ending of a series. There is neither rejoicing nor throwing bouquets in the air, but I think it might be the only time I've written a ship getting married and having a long established relationship. I'm really proud of this fic, because they are really, really, really happy, but there isn't an ounce of it that feels sappy to me. (It's a complete AU, so readable if you don't know the fandom, and it can also stand alone within the series.)
do you write crossovers? I wrote one 100-word drabble that was Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Doctor Who
have you ever received hate on a fic? all the time
do you write smut? all the time
have you ever had a fic stolen? all the time
have you ever had a fic translated? all the time
have you ever co-written a fic before? never
what's your all-time favorite ship? Kirk/Spock
what's a wip that you want to finish but don't think you ever will? Right now I have two big ones. One is for CQL/MDZS and is LWJ/WWX arranged marriage secret identity. The other is for The Original Series of Star Trek and also the Alternate Original Series, and has Kirk/Spock undertones but is probably gen, in which AOS!Spock switches places with TOS!Spock and TOS!Kirk has to deal with him. I have 40K written of each.
what are your writing strengths? dialogue, a tight closed third person POV, and I don't know how else to say this, but intensity
what are your writing weaknesses? maintaining interest long enough to write an ending, repetition/concision, syntactic variation, description
what are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? I think that if you're going to write a story about language, multilingualism, the experience of being multilingual or how being multilingual shapes one's life, it's a great idea to use those languages in the text. I doubt I'd write those stories, though I'm deeply interested in languages. Since I write such a tight POV, if the POV character doesn't understand the language they will not be able to clearly hear/differentiate every word, so I wouldn't write the othr language, and if the POV character does understand the language, I would write it as translated into the POV character's language so that we the reader can understand precisely what the POV character understands.
what's a fandom/ship you haven't written for yet but want to? I'm interested in Mo Ran/Chu Wanning, but I need to get a complete translation of canon first.
what's your favorite fic you've ever written? Probably still Responsible Science.

Mortal Kombat Self-aware au
This post is part of a larger post I have on my blog about how cool Self Aware Au is. It includes a couple Mortal Kombat fic recs and other fandoms such as; overwatch, Linked Unviese and Love and Deepspace. In that post, I mention ideas I have for my own fics and this is the post!
warning: this idea is at the very beginning of the process. so the little scenes include are a very rough draft. Be kind and enjoy!
Tumblr media
Mortal kombat 9 (?)(I haven't got the settling locked in, all i have are ideas, yikes)
Pairing: lord raiden x reader
Idea:
This idea of a plot starts in Mortal Kombat 9 or 10. idk, someone help. Where during a moment, Lord Raiden just becomes aware of the reader.
At first, he will be distrusting, but soon he'll conclude since the elder gods don't sense reader. that they must be someone more powerful, greater than the elder gods. Lord Raiden then turns to the reader for guidance. So the plot follows as the reader keeps playing. Unsure of what else to do, but now having to be more mindful of what they say as Lord Raiden can hear everything.
Funny moments ensure, of course. As reader is a simp. like me!
Now this idea splits, with option 1) either reader getting pulled a year before Mortal kombat 11 due to kronika (or some other reason, idk) and finally getting cute moments with Lord Raiden. Then going through with the events of that game. Ending with Liu Kang creating a reader to exist in mortal combat 1. But something is off with this reader. They somehow seem to know more than they should. mmm?
Or
2) you don't go into the game, you simply finishing it. it'll clash and you'll be unable to talk to Lord Raiden. as the plot will move onto Mortal kombat 1. Where during playing it, Lord liu kang is the self-aware god and thus repeating the cycle again. where Liu kang makes comments of how his Lord Raiden reacts and understands the comfort of having reader watch over. While reader is wondering if they can ever play Mortal Kombat like a normal person.  this one can be ansgty especially during the part where liu kang meets with the other titans. allow reader and raiden to have a moment, possibly a proper goodbye?
Not sure which path to follow but here's rough wip, (also could you imagine Old man Lord Raiden finding a way to connect to your internet via you consular and sending you 'I need to consult with you' lmao)
Scene:
“I will consutl with the elder gods” lord Raiden nod towards liu kang and koa Lang.
“You better not come to me. Or I swear.” you mumble as you watch the scene play. With a flash of blue, the cut scene fades to the load screen. The icon spinning In the corner only to soon adjust to the sky temple with raiden walking towards the screen.
“y/n-”
“ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!” you groan in annoyance cutting off Raiden's approach.
“I apologise. I'm aware you already gave me a warning-”
“I can't keep telling you answers, dude!”
“y/n…”
“*rant*” (yes rant, this is a rough wip, besties. idk the dialogue yet)
“Please.”
You pause as you turn to the screen. With a deep sigh you approach closer, standing face to face with Lord Raiden. With a heavy sigh, you drop your head as you give in.
“Okay, *gives answer.*” (pls don't judge me)
“Thank you, y/n.” Lord raiden sincerely thanked. Bowing to show his gratitude. Why is he so freaking cute?!
“Ugh! Puppy eyes and cute butt, how can I say no to that?” You ask yourself aloud, turning to sit on the couch again. Just in time to see Raiden glance at the screen before it cuts to the lording screen again.
With a panic squeal, you hide your face behind your hands. Mortified by the fact that Lord Raiden heard you loudly simp for him… again.
Tumblr media
Mortal kombat 1
Paring: smoke x reader
Idea:
This idea is when replaying story mode or during a simple 1v1 , a character becomes aware. But the idea was to have Smoke become aware and then have some lovely bonding moments. With you on the couch and him on the screen.
But then, somehow, you fall into the world of Mortal Kombat but strangely everything is at the start of story mode. Luckily, Tomas is still aware of the events and who you are. Thus he becomes determined to stop Bi-han from betraying him and Kaui Lang or at the very least, catching bi-han off guard and preventing him from escaping. All the while you are going with the flow and taking pictures like Johnny did lol
But the more I thought about this, the more interesting it'll be if it was a villain who got the chance to start over. Such as Shang Tusng or Bi-Han. How would they react to this information? How would Reader react to them! Would you try to lead them into the light or join them with a classy, ‘I don't want to fix you, let's be crazy together :)’
This idea is very fresh. Nothing is set in stone. So enjoy this very quick blur that I just made up on the spot, yikes.
I'm also writing a headcanon blur of the cast becoming Self-aware to help picking who to write about. Will be linked once finished and posted.
Note: I don't own the game so if any description of the game is wrong, please be kind in correcting me.
Scene:
“SPIN!SPIN!SPIN!” you eagerly chant as you look at the character page. Tomas is standing with his hands on his hips, giving off the perfect ‘disappointed mum'posse you ever saw. Scratch that, he's giving the almost perfect disappointed mum pose.
As the half smile and barely contain chuckles give away his enjoyment. Who knew a member of the shirui rui likes to be pamper and drawn over?
Well, itz job you'll do gladly and proudly!
“Please! Please! Please!” You stress as you inch closer to the screen. You can't spin the character anymore, With Tomas gainning control. Leaving you stuck to pursawy him to give you a view of the new outfit you unlock.
In a stand still, you do your best to give Tomas your adorable puppy dog eyes. Surely He break right?
With a sigh, Tomas shakes his head as he slowly spins in the spot. With as little enthusiasm as he can must as he again contains his chuckles.
While you shamelessly scream out your praise.
“LETS FUCKIN GO! WOOO!”

I know you've sort of migrated over to Arcane for the time being, but would happily take any Sandman thoughts or WIP updates floating around in your brain!
(Also please feel better soon. ❤️)
Thank you! :)
Funnily enough, I just started working on the seventies SF AU (Lighthouses tag) again after months away. I'd been feeling really uninspired on it but something this week called me back! It's in that awkward stage--maybe you know it, depending on your writing process?--where you've got all the really good solid bits down but it's missing some vital connective tissue. It's 32K and I think I can come in under 40, but those last bits really are the most treacherous and annoying.
As far as Arcane goes, I don't think I've migrated as much as been scooped up temporarily and dropped into my own private obsession. It truly is one singular fic and a highly specific haunting that I need to exorcise. I just cannot and will not get over the idea of these two characters being foils for one another, who are alike in so many ways but living on opposite sides of a coin (a coin that says, I have made myself into a weapon, a coin that says I measure myself by my service to others, that has manacles engraved on it with the word loyalty underneath); who collide once, by chance, and then come together again and again, like magnets, a visceral inexplicable yanking; recognizing themselves in the other, and believing, despite knowing better, that love can transform another person enough to change who they are, and change them enough to save them. It's the Fox and the Hound. It's two knights in warring kingdoms. It's lovers trapped in a story that always ends with facing each other down on a bridge. It's holding hands in the dark, and trying to rewrite the ending. I digress! Very normal about it. As you can see. Super normal.
Have a big long (1.5K) Lighthouses excerpt under the cut. Any of you who've been following along and waiting for this fic are saints in your own right. Dream phones Hob while sick, and Hob talks to him until he falls asleep:
When the sound of the phone ringing cuts through his sleep, Hob stares at the ceiling for another ring or two before he fully understands it’s a phone, and his, and he has to get out from under the covers to answer it. Groaning, he stands and turns on the light, blinking hard. The kitchen clock says it’s just after five, and he jolts the rest of the way awake, hurrying to pick it up. Something’s wrong at home. Nobody here would call him at this hour, but it’s already eight o’clock back east. “Ma?” he answers.
“Oh. No.”
“Dream,” he breathes out. Relief unknits his shoulders. “Hey. Why are you up so early? Did something happen?”
“I did not sleep. In the first place.”
Hob waits, but he doesn’t say anything else. The sound of Dream’s voice, scraped raw, answers the rest of Hob’s question anyway.
“I’ll bring you notes from class. Is that why you called? You sound rotten.”
“Yes,” says Dream, haltingly. “Thank you.” He starts to say something else but stops and coughs sharply. Then he speaks again, in tight measured bursts, and Hob can nearly feel the titanic effort of Dream stubbornly holding off from coughing. “Did I wake you. You said. You were. An early riser.”
Then he muffles the receiver and resumes hacking. Hob grimaces in sympathy. He glances sidelong at the clock, and bites his lip. 5:05. He’d bet a crisp Benjamin he doesn’t have that Dream was staring at the clock too, waiting for the first acceptable moment to call. The sudden wash of protective fondness threatens to drown him.
“I am. I’m up for the day,” he says, as soon as Dream catches his breath again. It is, technically speaking, the truth. He’s not going to go and let Dream feel even worse for what the man presumably deems the mortal sin of needing a small favour when he can barely string together a sentence.
The quiet susurration of static hisses between them. When he realizes Dream isn’t hanging up, he eyes the front door. “Listen, if you can’t sleep, do you want company? I could come over.” He shifts and stretches, putting clothes on in his mind.
“No,” says Dream, and his imagined self, half the way out the door already, turns back and glares bitterly at the phone.
Hob chews his lip instead of asking, Can I come over anyways? He can’t bring himself to let Dream off the phone just yet. “Well, let me distract you from your misery. If you’re lucky, I’ll be boring enough that you finally catch some sleep.”
There’s a long pause. “Alright,” Dream replies. “Since you insist.”
Hob grins. “Can your phone reach your bed?”
“Why?”
“Well, you’re definitely not going to fall asleep if you’re standing by the phone, are you?”
“Oh. No.”
Hob smiles at his own bed across the room as he listens to the sounds of shuffling. His stomach does something funny, with Dream in this state, still him but not, slow and pliable from exhaustion. Letting himself be bossed around by Hob. Just a little.
He hears a distant cough and then Dream brings the receiver back to his mouth. “Alright.”
“Good?”
“Miserable.”
Hob snorts. He can picture Dream sitting propped up in his bed with his phone beside him, receiver cradled in his hand. Chest aching like hell, probably. Delirious with exhaustion. He slides down the wall until he’s sitting on the floor. Doesn’t even know what he’s going to say until he opens his mouth, still thinking of other nights he’s been up, sleepless. Thinking of withstanding suffering. “Alright. When I played football in high school,” he starts, smiling when he hears a little huff on the other end, “Coach would lead us in this prayer before games. Same one every time, sent up to the patron saint of athletes. Saint Sebastian, give these boys the strength and fortitude to prevail. We must’ve heard it a hundred times. I end up looking him up in the library one day on my free period. I’m killing time and I see this big book of illustrated saints off the shelf. Alright. I wanna know. Who’s this guy that’s supposed to stop us from getting our asses kicked, right? What’d he ever do?”
“I know who he is,” rasps Dream, who even while sick as a dog can’t resist showing off his omniscient knowledge. “He-”
Hob hushes him. “‘Course you do. But I didn’t. Picture me, sixteen or so, finding his entry. In the school library. Saint Sebastian, martyr. Commanded to be shot to death by archers. But the art. He’s in this little loincloth, bound by rope to a tree, muscles straining, pierced with arrows. I stared at it until the bell rang. Then I did something terrible.” He pauses for dramatic effect. “I tore the page out of the book and shoved it right into the pocket of my letterman jacket.”
“No.” A scandalized croak.
“Oh, yes. I took him home with me,” he says, laughing. “Hid him under my mattress between the pages of a Playboy. He became my patron saint.”
“Undignified.”
“No way. Undignified was me imagining how I’d come upon him in the woods, and rescue him. I was one of his loyal converted soldiers, wasn’t I. I’d untie the ropes, suck the venom out of his wounds-”
“Venom?” interrupts Dream.
“Listen, I’d just seen Strange Cargo.”
“That’s a myth. It doesn’t work.”
“Come on, you’ve gotta give me a little creative leeway for my sexual fantasies, man.” Then he realizes what he’s said and feels his ears get hot. “But it doesn’t work in the movie either. The guy doing it knows it won’t do anything. He just wanted the guy who was poisoned to know somebody cared about him, before he bit the dust.”
Dream is quiet. The hush of static over the line feels charged in a way it didn’t before. Hob winces. He’d just wanted Dream to laugh at his expense. He grasps for a change the subject, but Dream speaks up before he can find something, anything, better than sexual fantasies.
“That’s very kind of him.” A beat. “Is that what you’re doing now?” His voice is low. He doesn’t sound like he’s teasing at all.
“God, you’re dramatic. You just have a cold,” Hob says, while trying very hard to not imagine pressing his mouth tenderly to a mortal wound on Dream’s thigh. Failing.
“But you do,” says Dream, very quietly.
“Do what?”
“Care. About me.”
Hob swallows down the first three traitorous words that spring to his lips. Dream must be feeling pretty damn sorry for himself, talking like that. Doesn’t mean Hob has any right to say what he wants to say. “Yeah,” he says. “I do. Of course I do. You’re my best friend. I’d suck the venom out, any day. Even if it did no good.”
Dawn is starting to lighten the room. Hob hums. “You know what, I’m pretty sure that’s why I imagined it. Embarrassing as hell, but that’s what it was for me. I mean, it was hot. But mostly it was the thought of putting my mouth to another guy’s skin and, God, and showing him I care, you know? Acting all swaggering like Steve McQueen or Clark Gable but secretly saying, I cared about you. I really cared. Being somebody’s arms to lie in, as they died. As long as there was mortal peril. Saint Sebastian, barely surviving the arrows, or that poor bastard in the desert, bit by a snake. Because there was no other good reason I could think of to hold another man that close.”
He twines and untwines the cord around his fingers, itching for a cigarette. This is the sort of thing he could never say to somebody’s face. Not even Dream’s.
“Sure, it would be nice to be somebody’s arms without all the tragedy. But that didn’t occur to me back then. To be honest, I’ve only just started to realize it is. Never felt possible before. So I never got around to wishing for it. Until here.” Until you.
He trails off into silence. Dream says nothing.
“Dream?” he asks, softly. His heart is pounding again like he just got woken up.
Nothing but the faint hush of static answers him. Hob squeezes his eyes shut and sighs. “Hey. You still awake?”
There’s no response. Well, for the better. To be spared of hearing Hob empty his guts like that.
He gently hangs up the phone, and groans as he stands up, stiff, and walks back to his bed. He imagines Dream in his own bed, dozing curled beside the phone, receiver lying next to his face, and wishes he could be there. Wishes he could see him, getting some rest at last.
Wishes, so stupid that it hurts his chest like holding in a bad cough, that he could be his arms to lie in.

day 31 of @hprecfest - most recent fic you loved
First Watch of Night by @tackytigerfic - E, 274k, 2024 (completed, posting as a WIP every two days, on chapter 14/21)
Harry Potter defeated Voldemort at the Battle of Hogwarts on May 2nd, 1998.
But what if he didn't?
Excerpt:
“Every single time your magic sparks off Potter’s, you could be eroding the edges of the world,” Draco said. “Though I suppose there’d be no Voldemort if the very fabric of our universe is destroyed. Excellent approach to victory from Team Reckless.”
Harry hadn’t hit anyone in years, probably not since fighting with Draco himself, in school, but he wanted to so badly that he could feel the hopeful tingle of it through his palm, out into the fingertips and collecting in his balled fist.
Interrogate the feeling, Bill would say if he were here. Let yourself feel what you need to feel. Harry suspected “let yourself embrace the violent desire to punch Draco Malfoy right in his smug mouth” was not quite what Bill meant when he had gone through those mindfulness exercises with the troops last month.
“Do you know what it’s like?” Harry said, pressing his hands flat against his own thighs, bearing down into the shifting muscle, grounding himself. It felt strange to be so close to Draco’s restless body. “Being me, I mean. Do you know what it’s like?”
“I don’t even know how to answer that,” Draco said. His colour was high in the spill of moonlight, throat swallowing convulsively. “Of course I don’t.”
“Just imagine,” Harry said quietly. From next door came the low sound of laughter. Malfoy had made it to bed, then. “Imagine being in pain all the time, constant low-level pain from all the Occlumency. And all the fighting. Years of it, Draco, years and years.” Under his palms his thighs felt tense. “I’m so tired.”
Without letting himself think about what he was doing, he shifted sideways on the bed and flopped down to lying, stretching his legs, letting himself sink into the mattress. Draco’s pillow was cool and firm under his hot cheek, and he closed his eyes. After a moment he felt the bed shift as Draco wriggled back down so he was lying too. The pillow under Harry’s head dipped with the added weight of Draco’s head, and he kept his eyes closed.
How do I even start with this fic, which I'd been hearing about for two years and looking forward to for longer, and which I FINALLY got to read (and even better, to beta!) this summer?? First Watch of Night is epic in length and even more so in scope; the worldbuilding is incredible, the characters are all fully-formed - flawed, but so very loveable, and at the heart of it all is a Tacky trademark love story, so deeply-felt that it'll stay with you long after you finish the fic. Plus... Multiverse! Angst! Pining! Draco and Harry getting to know their counterparts from another (maybe familiar...?) universe! Ex-friends to enemies to maybe-friends to lovers! Sharing a room! Spy Draco! Fencing! Rosie, Harry's gorgeous goddaughter! Multiple POVs! Action scenes! Sex! Wolfstar sex! (Brief) Romione sex! Other-Drarry sex! Look, this might not be the most polished rec of all time, but if you've read any of Tacky's fics before you'll know what they're about. And you'll probably already understand why I'm raving about this fic. So go, get started now, and you might just catch up with posting in time for the epilogue! (assuming you read faster than i do)
