Theme and Action: a tarot method for brainstorming plots, setting, and characters

I find a lot of story brainstorming spreads to be clunky and rigid, so I did a little experimenting and came up with a method I like a lot. I haven't done a ton of testing yet but I thought I'd share what I have.

Basically, it's a two card draw from a deck split into majors and minors. Each draw always has one major card (theme) and one minor card (action).

When you have a question, like:

What are some ideas for the next scene?

Why would that character behave that way?

What's the defining characteristic of this vampire clan?

What do the people in this society fear most?

Why is this scene dragging?

What does this character need to feel more real?

You would draw one major card and one minor card!

Themes and Action; what it's about vs how it manifests

We could call these cards a bunch of different things depending on exactly how the question is framed, but Themes and Action are good enough.

Basically, the major arcana card gives subtext or context, and the minor arcana card provides specific incidents. Like this!:

"In my vampire setting, what is the most important thing in vampire culture?"

Theme: Death

Action: 10/Pentacles

Interpretation: (Theme) The most important thing in vampire culture is the process of dying and the equalizer of death itself. (Action) This has resulted in cultural rituals where death is treated as a sacred adoption or initiation into a new family/estate.

(I really drew this test spread and it really was death lol)

We can swap out the Action card to see a different outcome:

Theme: Death

Action: 5/Swords

Interpretation: (Theme) the most important thing in vampire culture is the process of dying and the equalizer of death itself. (Action) the horror of death and loss has never been overcome in this society, and it must be dealt with as an individual - because vampires process the pain of their own deaths by taking it out on each other.

Here's a different example. In an urban fantasy book where a witch solves ghost mysteries, pacing is dragging and we need our next scene to be exciting. But despite a foot chase after a suspected ghost poacher, the scene doesn't feel fast paced or exciting. The question is, "how do we spice this up?"

Theme: Hermit

Action: King of Cups

Interpretation: (Theme) instead of a crowded street, the character will be isolated and without normal support. (Action) she'll be trapped in a closed space with the story's main villain, who most closely connects with the King of Cups

Another swap, this time switching out the theme card:

Theme: Empress

Action: King of Cups

Interpretation: (Theme) the scene feels boring because it's action without development. Show the main character's personal development and give her a 'level up' moment. (Action) have the ghost poacher lead her to a premature showdown with the main villain, whom she faces bravely for the first time.

This is already long so I'm not going to go on and on with examples but so far I've found this method to be pretty versatile.

Try interpreting Theme and Action as literally as you can within the context of the story!

If you're writing a story about a flower princess who sleeps on a dewdrop in the mystical Gnarlwood Forest, the Sun card will mean one thing.

If you're writing a story about vampires, the Sun card probably means something very different.

Major arcanas can be literary themes, like the moon representing deceit within society, but they can also be literal; in a werewolf story, the Moon card might represent the celestial body that controls the lives of certain people.

The most important thing for me is to avoid interpreting the cards in a general self-help sense.

The cheerful villagers of prosperous Splitsky Castle are waiting for you to invent a festival so a mysterious stranger can come to town and get the plot going.

The question is, "what kind of festival gives me the right setup to pull off the plot point I want?"

The theme card is the Magician, so ideas for the festival could be:

A festival honoring magic users (if they exist in your setting)

A festival honoring the resourcefulness of the villagers

A festival of stage magic and trickery

The action card is the 6/Cups.

Probably, the festival is not about healing your inner child with Jungian shadow work. More contextual ideas might include:

A festival where children are chosen to be trained in magic

A festival celebrating teaching the next generation important skills

A festival meant to delight and entertain children with stage magic

Developing related factions or foils

Draw a major arcana card to identify a certain Theme, maybe along the lines of:

What do they hold to be sacred?

What do they not care about, or hate?

What is their most cherished virtue?

What is the defining feature of leadership?

When they sing about home, what is in their songs?

This theme will be the same for both entities.

Draw different minor arcana cards to show how each entity expresses that theme.

Conversely, work in the opposite direction: keep the minor arcana card for both entities, and swap out the theme card.

Finding Action cards when you know the Theme

Holding the deck so that it's facing you, thumb through the cards until you find the major arcana card that describes your theme. The most recent minor arcana card that was on top of it, even if separated by other majors, is the action card.

Reversals

I tend to read both cards as upright and reversed, and just apply whatever meanings are most relevant. In my experiments using reversals ended up being too finicky and specific, and limited my creativity.

Complex Concepts and Plots

For a complex reading, like plotting an entire novel or building an entire character, I have found more utility in doing many pair readings rather than doing one large spread with many pairs.

My tests so far have suggested that the most creative freedom is found in asking specific questions, like "what is this character's driving motivation," and "what is her quirky hobby," and "what makes her put up with her annoying best friend," rather than trying to build a giant spread that includes all of these things at once.

As a caveat, in plot spreads, I will sometimes put pairs down without returning them to the deck, and then connect Theme/Action pairs with single action cards to suggest events that connect the dots.

What settings or vibes do you find yourself coming back to and writing again and again? If you'd like, please provide receipts.

A setting that I repeat in almost every story I've posted so far is one of the character's home. Maybe it's partially because this provides a good excuse for only having two characters in a scene, which helps in the nameless writing I do. But the fact that I so often couple this with the resident being vulnerable while the guest is taking care of them, and that this kind of scene comes so easily and frequently to me, shows that I do have an affinity for this setup.

Over and over again I'm attracted to these hurt/comfort scenes where the characters are stripped of their power in their own homes. Though the vibe of the scene changes between soft-spoken and ugly breakdown and mama bear and things between, the configuration is so often derivative of that template:

Character A is vulnerable, and character B enters their home to help.

Examples and further details:

There was a trio of story bites I did with a specific focus on Vulnerability. I wanted to make scenarios where character A was completely and utterly at the whim of character B, and character B chose to be gentle and trustworthy.

In It's Cold Outside…, Villain nearly died and is still physically incapable of defending themselves (and barely able to talk) when Hero sits down to take care of them. For the entire piece, Villain is sitting on the floor wrapped up in a blanket, and Hero is moving around their house doing things to help. Villain is defensive and uncomfortable because they're completely at Hero's whim, in Hero's house, on Hero's terms. But as the piece goes on, Villain begins to shed their temper and their skepticism and is able to trust that Hero won't hurt them.

"Feeling better?" Hero uttered. Villain glared up at them, pulling the blanket tighter around their shoulders. They considered saying something nasty for a moment.

"My toes are killing me," they mumbled instead. Hero nodded.

"Would you [like me to] check on them?" Villain looked over Hero's face as if there could be a secret motive. But they nodded, leaning back, and Hero carefully helped them set aside the hot chocolate and open up the blanket.

The next piece I did, Open Wounds, was an attempt to max out this feeling of helplessness and vulnerability. Hero was injured by a more powerful character than either one present in the scene, and has summoned Villain into their home for the first time because they can't get out of the tub by themself.

"I can't get up," they whispered, their voice watery.

Villain stared. Hero had summoned them into their home, completely defenseless, even immobile and naked. They were perfectly and completely harmless. It couldn't possibly be any easier to end them.

There were tears brimming in Hero's eyes. Their arms were covered in goosebumps and they were shivering subtly. They were blushing across their whole face, across their ears, down their neck.

This piece really lingers in the feeling of quiet and vulnerability. Villain takes a long time to make sure Hero is dry, during which time the two are speaking in hushed tones. But Hero's been trusting Villain the whole time, injured and naked as they are, and it becomes clear that Villain doesn't intend on betraying that trust.

Villain kept quiet, gritting their teeth as they carefully cupped and patted down the length of Hero's arm. Once they were both dry, Villain started patting their chest. "I'm sorry," Hero breathed.

"Shut up," Villain said gently. Hero huffed a soft laugh as Villain quietly gave up on any illusions of modesty.

"I'm lucky you're a good person," Hero whispered. Villain glanced up at their face, but despite the tense amusement, Hero's eyes were still closed. Villain looked back down and patted Hero's stomach.

The third piece in this trio, Ol' Ben, is about Hero trusting Villain, not with their own life, but with the life of Hero's small, elderly dog. The dog's care has become complex in his old age, and leaving him behind, especially with a self-proclaimed troublemaker, is not easy for Hero. Once again, Villain, who has most of the power in this situation, chooses to be kind and gentle.

"Just… be gentle with him," Hero said. "He's just a little old man, and he's deaf and half-blind, and he gets confused." They picked him up carefully, holding him by the ribs and smoothly laying him with his back along their arm, a hand cradling his back end. They looked sad again. Soft.

"I'll be patient and kind," Villain promised. Hero rubbed Benny's tummy, looking at Villain with pleading eyes.

"He's almost sixteen," Hero whispered. "Just, please—"

"Hero," Villain uttered, softly reaching out to pet Benny's head. He moved his head around to sniff Villain's hand, then looked again to Hero. "I might be a troublemaker sometimes," Villain said, "but I'm never a monster. I'll keep Ben safe and happy. I swear it."

Besides plain vulnerability, I like to write about the struggles of handling complex emotions, and the difficulty with letting others in to help. Many of my hurt/comfort pieces feature at least one character being pushy in order to get around the other character's emotional defenses.

Open Late is probably the second best example of this. This story breaks the pattern in that it does not take place in either character's home, but in a 24 hour diner. Both Hero and Sidekick are still reeling from a bloody accident, and Hero is succumbing to the grief and loss while Sidekick attempts to hold him together. She tells him what to do and uses a lot of firm physical contact to comfort and direct him.

The diner door chimed in the almost empty night, footsteps shuffling loudly in through the door. The host's booth was empty, and Sidekick didn't wait for anyone to appear. She adjusted her hold on Hero to keep him tight to her side, keeping his head almost forcibly on her shoulder, and walked them to a nearby booth. She nudged him in first, and he numbly fumbled for the seat, stumbling in between the cushion and the table, and she tugged at his cape to keep it from choking him when he sat. She scooted in immediately after him and nudged him in deeper. He pressed himself into the wall, hands already coming up to his blood- and tear-streaked face, and she moved the sauces and shakers and sugars away so Hero had open table in front of him before sitting hard against him, firmly squeezing him between her and the wall.

I think this piece more than any other so far focuses on one character helping the other through negative emotions. Hero and Sidekick are both actively processing a traumatic scene in their own ways, and Sidekick comforts, distracts, and cares for Hero as he breaks down over the lives they lost.

Breaking up (Is Hard Enough) is another example where a character uses stubbornness to care for another. After a somewhat long-term relationship ends a week into February, Hero attempts to spend Valentine's Day alone. Sidekick's response to the situation is to come into Hero's apartment, like it or not, and have a movie night. While the actual confrontation with the negative emotions is minimal, Sidekick does at least acknowledge the Hero isn't doing well before attempting to distract them with a fun evening.

Of all of the pieces I've done so far, I think Rescue exemplifies the pushy caretaker the most. Hero is injured and barely has any food in their apartment, and when they repeatedly challenge Villain (who has broken into their apartment with groceries), Villain laughs at them, physically forces them to sit down, and scolds them. This caretaker isn't doing anything gently, and even when they wipe away Hero's tears, they're being threatening and fierce.

"I, you can't fool me," Hero tried weakly. "I'm, you can't just buy me with food." Villain laughed, throwing their head back slightly as they did.

Even after moving out, her new home does not provide a sense of emotional security. She leaves the first new place almost immediately and ends up staying with friends. But when she is attacked in the middle of the night in this third home, neither her nor her friends can quite settle down and relax.

Yamez had pulled himself up close to my right side, resting his head on my shoulder, his arm over me. Ohrik lay along my other side, holding my hand gently, Shohm wrapped around him with an arm over me. None of them seemed to be sleeping. Yamez was still trembling, and I hugged him tighter to my side. He clung to me, but said nothing.

Despite their presence, despite their arms around me, their closeness and affection, I couldn't feel safe.  Not when moments ago I had been dragged from the cot and beaten without disturbing any of them.

Thank you for reading my extremely long analysis.  I don't think this practice of using the home as an emotional stage is particularly revolutionary or original, but it's clearly something that haunts me.

No inc*st or p*dophilia - we can’t keep you from writing it or creating art for it but it won’t be reblogged. No inc*st: This rule does not apply to distant cousins and such, as you might find in the LotR fandom (or basically in all of European Monarchy). The line we draw is at direct blood relations (siblings, parents, kids) and/or legal guardianship. No p*dophilia: This rule does not rule out fandoms that feature teenagers such as Harry Potter, Heartstoppers, Hunger Games, etc. It also doesn't mean you can't write about their time together as teenagers! While we can’t force you to write fluff or create fluffy art, please try to keep in mind that this is a fluff event 😉 that, of course, doesn't mean you can't combine it with angsty/whumpy prompts - hurt/comfort is absolutely welcome!

You can start creating as soon as you see this - but please refrain from posting before the respective day.

If you post early, we will schedule your post for the correct day; if you use multiple prompts in one creation, we will post on the earliest day you used.

I'm so mad that post was misinformation because there is actually an EXTREMELY important conversation to have about the production schedules artists are forced into. There's no need for exaggeration, the conditions are bad.

I work for webtoon. My publication schedule is weekly. While publishing I'm required 10-15 pages a week. Fully colored.

This means I'm finishing a 150 page fully colored graphic novel every 10-15 weeks.

When my comic is not updating, I am not getting paid. Any time writing, editing, or off is out of my own pocket. I don't get healthcare. They do not provide any assistants. They expect me to promote myself; they chose to deprioritize me before I even launched and gave me an end date half a year in. I never had a chance.

And this is the industry standard! Every company has artists forced into crunch hours, overtime, and burnout. Artists are literally dying early due to it. So many of my friends can't afford to go to the doctor.

It's unsustainable and untenable, and it's also the expectation our audiences have.

If we want to have this conversation, there's plenty of conversation to be had with the realities of the situation. It's bad as is.

DPXDC Prompt #61 Part 5

There were two new arrivals to the dining room. Both with black hair but one of them had an odd white stripe, the stripe reminded him of his hair in ghost form. 

The one without the stripe sat next to Tim and the other one sat next to Danny. 

“You weren’t kidding when you said they looked identical,” the guy without the stripe said, “Names Richard Greyson, but you can call me Dick”

Dick had a bright smile on his face, it was clear he was a morning person. 

Damian made another ‘Tt’ noise at his introduction. 

The guy with the stripe in his hair grunted in agreement before holding out a coffee mug for Alfred, who was already standing next to him ready to pour. He took a swig before speaking, “Names Jason, you may look alike but seeing Damian eat meat, even from an alternate universe is weird.”

Danny took a bite of his bacon and swallowed like he was making a point before speaking, “I go by Danny, I faked my death years ago, as far as I’m concerned we were all strangers in my world.” He started, he took a moment to think about exactly how’d he explain everything. He knew it wasn’t exactly a pretty story but he also knew from the stories Talia told him when he was younger that Bruce was all about planning ahead, so keeping information from  him might not be the best way to go about all of this. 

He took another bite and swallowed before speaking again, “My foster family is fine though, I have a roof over my head and food. They spend most of their time in their lab working. They study Ectology, or the study of ghosts.” Jason raised an eyebrow at this but didn’t say anything. Danny continued, “They actually succeeded in building a portal to their realm, the realm of ghosts, or Infinite Realm as we call it.”

“We? You say that like you're one of the ghosts” Tim asked laughing a little bit.

He quickly got silent when Danny wasn’t laughing with him.

Damian made another ‘Tt’ noise before speaking, “Clearly this imposter has lost it, ghosts don’t exist and all of this nonsense is just that nonsense.” He glared at Danny.

Danny smiled at him and it caused Damian to falter a little before he glared at Danny again.

“Yes, Ghosts are real,” Danny sighed before continuing, “Trust me, it sounds crazy but I’ve seen some crazy things in my world. Although now I’m wondering if just showing you guys would be easier… Alright I’ll show you all but know that no one except my sister knows. Secret identity and all.”

“Wait,” Dick interrupted, “Does Robin not exist in your world?”

“Robin existed but there hasn’t been a Robin since Joker murdered the last one.” Danny answered. 

Everyone fell silent at that and the atmosphere got heavy. Everyone, especially Jason was giving each other knowing glances.

Danny cleared his throat before continuing, “Anyways, yes ghosts exist, unfortunately the portal in this world probably doesn’t work like my own world. It’s been about a year since I turned it on and since I was here in Gotham when they tried it in this world there’s no telling what they did after it didn’t work. Actually now that I think about it, I wonder if they exist here,” he thought about the GIW in his world and it occurred to him. If ghosts weren’t running rampant in Amity Park, they probably didn’t exist here.

He brought out his phone from his pocket and looked it up. His eyes lit up a bit at the information he found. Or more accurately the information he didn’t find. Searching GIW in this world brought zero results, so great he wouldn’t be hunted for existing here. 

He let out a sigh of relief at this. He turned to everyone and they were watching him closely. He gave them a small smile, “It’s been a while since I had a moment where I didn’t have to worry about being hunted for existing.” He explained. He figured he might as well get the conversation out of the way no matter how difficult it was. 

Everyone at the table was silent as they waited for him to continue. The tension was thick in the air however, you could tell that even though Danny had just arrived everyone was ready to jump to defend him, even if he wasn’t their Damian he was still part of the family even if he had just arrived into their lives. It cemented Danny’s determination to tell them the truth.

He took a deep breath and then spoke again, “The portal didn’t work at first when they tried it, I of course wanted to help so when they were away I went in to see if I could figure out the problem… Long story short, it helps to build the on switch on the outside of the portal. I’m not proud to admit that even with all of my training, there were just too many cords that even I tripped.” He didn’t have to say much else about that as their faces told him they understood what happened. He gave a dark chuckle and continued, “Yeah hurt like hell but I don’t have to worry about losing anything anymore.” He then took his phone and phased it into his chest.

The room went silent again for a moment, but it was broken by Jason who started cackling.
