THE PROTAGONIST AND THE READER

Thinking about the complex relationship between Yjh and Kdj.

The reason why we can easily tell that Kdj loves Yjh is because he's a reader and a reader will love the protagonist. But Yjh's love for Kdj is ambiguous because a protagonist is not supposed to know the reader. That's what makes their relationship so intricate. It's this complex love that shouldn't exist in the first place which leads to a series of unfortunate events. In this essay I will-

TRAUMA IN ORV

[SPOILERS]

While it's a common theme in any manhwa or manga for characters to not address each other's (or their own) trauma, I think ORV shows that beautifully.

We, as readers, feel each character's pain because we see every aspect of it. A spectator is mostly the only one well-qualified to differentiate right from wrong in a conflict. The only reason why we're able to do that is because we're readers (or shall I say "fragments of Kim Dokja" because I'm delusional like that T_T).

Do you notice the similarity? The reason why Kdj knew exactly what everyone was feeling at all times is because he always saw them through the eyes of a reader. But that goes contrary to "just because he's read about it doesn't mean he understands it". So, here's my take on it - just because he knows their pain doesn't mean he knows how to confront it. Kdj is the least qualified person out there to talk about one's feelings. He can't even address his own trauma because he doesn't see it from the eyes of a reader. To him, that was the one real thing that's ever happened. And that's why he's a sacrificial squid.

Maybe if we were in ORV (we were, we're all Kdj, remember?), we would've done the same. Kdj's got attachment issues, he's got a lot of issues that need to be paid attention to but nobody knows how to make him feel better. It's difficult to help a person who looks and acts like he doesn't need help.

This distinct parallel that ORV has between Kdj and the readers is what makes this novel so great - what makes it feel alive. It's not that hard to believe that "yes, maybe Kdj did exist", "maybe we all are fragments of Kdj", "yes, it's possible".

I cannot stop talking about this novel. Every part of it is so beautiful. I recommended it to a friend and the only thing I told him is that he can only truly understand the manhwa if he falls in love with the story or the characters. ORV as someone's debut novel/manhwa into reading would be questionable. But for someone who is already a reader, someone whose whole life is books, this is a must read.

I wonder how different the story would've been if Kdj acknowledged that he needs help. Sometimes it hurts that he never even realised the sheer extent of love everyone had for him. Inversely speaking, none of them could ever do what Kdj had done. They might be willing to - to save him, but they couldn't. Because everyone wanted to "see the scenarios end" or something similar to that, while Kdj was the only one who wanted to see the "epilogue". He doesn't even think of himself when he thinks about the future. It's always my companions this my companions that. Everyone's motivation was either each other or the dream of a normal life but his motivation was a story.

Even the author cannot love their own story - they'll always find something wrong with it. Only a reader will ever truly love it. Only a reader can.

Alfred gives specific instructions that he has to look presentable. But he's outnumbered and unfortunately gets hit in the face.

They try their best to reduce the swelling but can't get rid of the bruise itself. So, they seek help from someone who won't make a fuss about it.

Babs: That's gonna take at least a day or two.

Jason: But the fundraiser is in three hours!

Babs: Hm, you're gonna have to cover that.

Steph: Our talent lies in giving people bruises, not hiding them.

Babs: *texting* Good thing I called a professional.

A couple minutes later, someone bursts through the door with a full-fledged professional makeup kit.

It's Dick.

JASON FEELS LEFT OUT

It's Jason so he won't show it but sometimes he feels left out in things. For example, he can't give "family interviews" because he's legally dead for the world.

The Batfam watch those stupid interviews together and laugh about it - except Jason. He wishes he was there too (he'd rather die again than admit it). He thinks about what he would've said to certain questions.

Dick and Alfred notice. They inform Bruce.

It's a time where civies are still scared of the Red Hood. So, they call Clark and Lois to interview RH.

The interview is amazing. The rest of the Batfam joins in too (as their vigilante personas). Hell, even Batman joins them. Jason is touched but he acts like this is a waste of time (while still giving the interview anyway).

The Daily Planet publishes the interview and Lois Lane posts the interview video. Suddenly, the internet is filled with everyone fangirling over the Red Hood. Civies start being nice to him and he's so grateful for it - he never actually says thank you but the Batfam knows.

I love the headcanon that Bruce covers his kids with his cape to protect/comfort them.

So now the kids have the same reflex.

Damian pulls his cape to cover Jon when they're under attack, well aware that Jon has super strength.

Cass is exhausted one night and Steph pulls her cape over Cass and they both fall asleep like that (Bruce discovers them and just smiles).

Bernard is caught in a crossfire and Tim wraps him in his cape to get him to safety.

The most shocking one is when Kate busts Selina's robbery. Suddenly, a window explodes and Kate reflexively covers Selina. Selina smirks and Kate just curses Bruce.

Can we talk about love in orv?

[SPOILERS]

Okay so, I am aware that Kdj loves the "story" but I really wanna point some things out individually because it's 2am and ORV is on my mind.

Kdj had the easiest way out of the 1863rd turn. The most perfect turn (at the time) but he really went I'd let the world burn for Yjh? Yeah, everything is "part of his plan" but let's talk about the 73rd Demon King arc. My man would do anything to make sure Yjh finishes his story. Apart from this, it's the fact that while everyone else dislike any other version of Yjh (even he hates himself lol), Kdj loves every. single. one. I mean 3rd turn (1864th) Yjh? Yes. Hsy's 1863rd turn? Yes. Frickin' Secretive Plotter? Got off to a rough start but yes. You simply cannot make Kdj hate his beloved protagonist. I mean, this man risked his whole existence to make sure the 0th turn is actually the most perfect one. He didn't want Yjh to regress but became his sponsor anyway because it's what Yjh wanted. He would do anything to see Yjh happy. This type of love isn't romantic or platonic or anything else, it's the most inexplicable form of love. Love in its purest form. I'd like to take the time to compare it to Achilles and Patroclus because while we can fight over whether these two were gay or not, we cannot deny the sheer love they had for each other. No strings attached. Kdj is in awe of Yjh.

Yjh. The regressor. The protagonist. The person Kdj loves the most. Yjh had everything (0th turn) but he really gave it all up just to meet Kdj. Suffered the "Hell of eternity" just to see him. Bro didn't even love Lsw the way he loves Kdj. Tbf, 0th turn Yjh didn't know what the real struggle of passing the scenarios without help was but I'm sure he got the gist. Okay, sure, you can call it "curiosity" that led to Yjh keeping Kdj alive during the 3rd (1864th) turn. But my guy didn't choose Kdj to go to Peace Land because he had "someone he loved" like bro, YJH!? THE COLD REGRESSOR??? HE DID THAT FOR KIM DOKJA! Not to mention the fact that Yjh didn't even care that his whole life was a mere novel. He just despised the fact that Kdj chose the 1863rd turn over him. I'm gonna cry. Bro wanted Kdj so bad that he kept fighting the Secretive Plotter. Not only this, he gave up the 3rd (1864th) turn for Kdj too. Went from Supreme King to terrorist just to save Kdj. When everyone else - even Hsy - gave up. After all, what is a protagonist without a reader? The whole astronaut ordeal might've been to "find his purpose" but we can't ignore their connection. He gave up everything he could ever ask for twice (0th and 3rd/1864th turn) for Kdj. The attachment these two have with each other is insane.

I could go on about them for eternity but we have another person to talk about - Hsy. This woman spent 10 years exhausted, stuck in a world-line and body not her own for one person. Even if it's only Hsy with half her memories, she gave up her perfect world-line because she missed Kdj. Just like Kdj loves Yjh, Hsy also loves every version of Kdj. She wanted to meet him, no matter what the world-line. My girl had only a few hours where she was in control and decided to use off all those hours to write TWSA - a story she herself disliked. Hsy wants to see Kdj happy, every part of Hsy loves Kdj. There is nothing a writer could love more than an avid reader who loves their story. And let's talk about the fact that Yjh and Hsy absolutely hate each other. He is literally her creation (more or less) but their relationship is questionable. Why? Because a protagonist has no value without a reader. Kinda like Asuka Ren and Kyrgios Rodgraim. They have no special relationship despite being creator and creation. Since there is no reader, Asuka and Kyrgios are as distant as two people can be. Alternatively, what brings Hsy and Yjh together is Kdj.

I just can't get enough of the way ORV relationships are written. If I had to describe love as a writer, I'd cite ORV as an example.

BATFAMILY HEADCANON

The young members (Cass, Steph, Damian, Duke) absolutely refuse to believe that Discowing ever existed. So the conversations go something like this:

Steph: You're telling me that Dick "charms strangers on the street without even trying" Grayson intentionally looked funky while saving the city?

Babs: *shrugs*

Steph: Pfft. Nice one, Babs. I almost believed you.

Damian: Grayson is smarter than your whole family combined.

Jon: But Kara told me-

Damian: Supergirl should mind her own business.

Jon: You know, she even went on a date with him back when he was Robin! I heard her telling Kon that it was terrible...

Damian: *offended* In case you have not noticed, Jonathan, my brother is with the Princess of Tamaran. I do not think he achieved that by having a suit worse than you.

Cass: *signing* He is definitely trying to mess with you.

Duke: I don't know, man. Tim said he had evidence of the suit till Oracle had him destroy it after he became Robin.

Cass: *signing* Sounds too convenient.

Duke: I guess...

But they want to clear it up just for the sake of their own conscious. They've tried confirming it from Jason but he goes into a spiral of mental trauma (Dick threatened to leak the picture of him crying while watching Lilo and Stitch).

Cass: *signing* Is it true?

Jason: *sighs dramatically* Whenever I try to think too much about my Robin days, *looks at the ceiling* it brings back bad memories.

Cass: *holds his hand* I'm so sorry. That was stupid of me.

Jason: *shocked and feeling bad* Oh no no, I'm fine-

Bruce and Alfred just brush them off. Bruce does it for Dick's sake and Alfred likes to see them fuss about all day discussing the legitimacy of Discowing.

Damian: Father, I must see the record files from Todd's Robin days.

Bruce: Why the sudden interest?

Damian: I wish to, well, help-

Bruce: *well aware what this is about* No.

Alfred: Miss Brown, I have no knowledge of Master Richard's life after he became Nightwing.

Steph: Bullshit. You know everything that goes on in the manor.

Alfred: Evidently, this happened outside the manor. *smiles* If it even happened, that is.

And with Dick not even giving them a chance to bring it up, Discowing becomes a myth all around the heroes. Did he truly exist? We may never know.
