@muffinsin I blame you for this, I write the reader point of view of reader you write Cassandra, deal? deal.
Fucked up! Reader x Cassandra dimitrescu
Warning: violence Cassandra being Cassandra, really what do you expected of this tag?
You always have been a Little... different that's what your family used to say. You were blunt and honest but the thing that trouble them most was your prediction for violence.
You got in a fight with a neighbor when you were a kid, your father had to pick you off the boy, the rock you grabbed to beat him was full of blood.
People keep their children away from you after that. Your parents too keep their distance.
Now all grow up, you are in the Dimitrescu Castle, working as a maid. The only thing you hated was the dress. As for everything else...
"AHHHH PLEASE LADY DANIELA I'M SORRY"
You actually don't mind. People die all the time, people suffer all the time and nobody of them were someone that you particularly care for, so being in a castle full of death and blood was pretty easy for you, do your job and that's all.
Rounding the corner, you see a pretty common scene.
"Look what have you done! My favorite sword has a scratch! You useless woman!"
" I'm s-orry Lady Cassandra my arm was tired and I-AHH"
The cut was fast and made with lethal precision. The arm was in the carpet, it will be a pain to clean luckily this was not your assigned area.
"Not tired anymore I bet"
The maid keep screaming, until Cassandra cut her head in another clean swipe of sickle. You can't stop the low hum in your throat. She looked at you her sadistic smile displaying her fangs.
"What is little morsel? Want to be next?"
She was full of blood, ready to cut your head too but the only thing you could think was:
"That was a clean cut my lady, you have a steady hand"
Cassandra freezes for a moment, you get closer to the body not too much as you still have to clean and getting your uniform dirty before that was a bad idea.
"You also have to be pretty strong or have a sharp weapon to make this so smoothly"
You stand up. Looking at the still frozen fly girl.
"Truly impressive"
At the end of your words Cassandra just swarmed away, her prey forgotten in the floor. You shrug walking to your duties.
For a moment you though that she was blushing.
The next day there is a leg outside your door something carved in the skin.
"How is this cut for you?"
Again it was very precise but what caught your attention was the handwriting, it was messy and the message feels like if she was pouting when she wrote it.
"Aww, My lady is pretty cute"
You hear something move above you, looking fast you catch part of one swarm, you know exactly what sister was spying. You laughed softly, very cute indeed.
The next week you were assigned to take some things to the dungeons. A chore that all the maids are terrified to do, the scream of the unfortunate souls trapped there and the sadistic daughter that was always ready to take more were more than enough to make them beg at the feet of the head maid for a change that like them never comes.
You just pick the box and go. The screams were annoying but you just tune then out, you put the thing down. Looking around you see one of the victims, Stella?Sara? you don't remember, she had cuts all around her body, how long was she here? Was two weeks ago? Three? And she was still alive?
"Seeing your future, little maid?"
You flinch surprised. You don't hear her come.
"I make sure to keep her miserable as long as possible by-
"Making cuts that are painful but not mortal, absolute brilliant, nothing less of expert like you"
You take a look around you see a man being held by hooks that goes through his hands, his legs are broken you can see that clearly, either he put his weight in the legs or in the hands , both choices painful.
"Very creative"
Full of curiosity you keep exploring. Praises to Cassandra talents never stopping
"Astounding"
" Visionary"
"Imaginative"
Until you feel the swarm pick up you up and rapidly throw you outside and closing the door as fast.
"Rude"
You stand up going to report the head maid of your completed chore.
If you could saw through walls you would have see a peculiar image of the so called monster sitting on the other side of the door, face red, hugging herself and purring happily.
More limbs were given to you as well as some organs, luckily they were of animals, so you cooked them. You keep a journal were every gift is written some examples were :
Deer leg with the following message *you have pretty eyes*"
Boar heart *Did you know they are the most similar to humans? * she is such a nerd
Full Bunny *Small like you* the small was more like a smoll it made you laugh.
One day a group of hunters try to raid the castle and kill the monsters inside, they only end giving you more work.
Bodies, blood and all kind of gore is in the floor AND in the carpet. It will be a pain to clean, even lady Bela it's looking at you with pity. You sigh pulling you sleeves up when you are tackled by certain brunette.
"Are you okay?! Did they hurt you?! Tell me who-"
"I'm fine lady bela take care of them"
"You took three"
"oh yeah, that reminds me"
You point at the three bodies.
"They are all yours Lady Cassandra"
The sisters have a particular rule, prey that they hunt, prey that they eat. Cassandra was the strongest not the fastest, Daniela and Bela surely got more than her.
"I killed them so they are mine but i don't gonna eat it so they are all yours."
Cassandra keep looking at your face you cleaned her face with you apron the only red was in her cheeks, she was so cute that you can resist it anymore you grabbed her neck and kissed her, it took a few seconds but he eagerly returned the kiss.
"FINALLY, the pining was killing me"
"SHUT UP DANIELA"
You were in a relationship with the sadistic sister something that you still were processing, you could easily live freely without working at all. But you were sorry for Bela having to work with short staff because her sisters were little shits with zero self control. So you keep working, in Cassandra side mostly and sometimes in Daniela.
Today was one of that days were you work was in Daniela hall. Everything was going well until a new maid decided to ruin the mood
"I told you, someday that bitch a Cassandra will get what she deserves, maybe I could let her live if she eats my pussy real good".
The other maid was new too but a lot smarter she looked like she wanted to stay away from her and was making signals to the absolute imbecile that was talking.
" I would tear her ap-UGH"
You grabbed her head and bashed her harder against the wall.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. She is out.
You let go of her head and looked at the other maid she just picked up her cleaning tools and continue her job, she was learning fast.
You walk and pick one leg of the imbecile, you start walking to the library were you beloved was having a sisters day.
No one interrupt you or try to help her. They know better.
The newbies considered you a depraved traitor. Sleeping with the monster that could kill them any day. But still survival is priority so they keep working.
The older considered you a blessing. The amount of death and injury since you started dating Cassandra was lower. Keep working, Survival is priority.
You were at the doors of the library you opened the door.
"knock first I know you have manners"
"aw did Draga mea miss me so much?
Focusing on the sickle on the table you entered in the room, dropping the maid in the middle of the room you pick the sharp blade.
You bend and grab the little bitch head again, you pull out her tongue and with a quick swing cut it out.
"AHH-UGH"
You grabbed her again and bashed her against the floor again.
One, two, three, four, five. She is out.
You dropped her and walked to your beloved, you throw the sickle on the table, she was silent looking at you with that pretty blush, so adorable.
You grab her chin, kissing her deeply until she is panting, the blush in her face just grow bigger and the soft purr in her chest is music, yours she is totally yours.
Grabbing her gloved hand you drop the tongue, you point to the crying woman in the floor.
"Here my love, a snack"
You kissed her again.
"I still have duties to attend, I see you later."
She looked like a lovesick puppy. A puppy whom you will play with later. What a good life.

tell me about cassandra cain
did not expect you to ask this but sure i'll bite! my opinions are largely based in batgirl (2000) bc that's primarily the appearances of her i have read
one aspect i love about them: everything abt her in batgirl (2000) i'm so serious. how steadfast she is in her morals for better or worse because she projects so hard because everyone MUST be capable of change everyone must be able to be better because what does that mean for her. how she grapples with if she's inherently a killer. if all she's made of is her base instincts. the way she's constantly learning how to interact with people throughout her run and you can see sometimes she learns well and sometimes she is clearly taking cues from bruce because bruce won't let her go outside (i.e. cass being stern w steph and telling her to get off the streets and go home and the moment steph's back is turned cass drops the act and looks so worried for her . because being demanding with steph is a LEARNED behavior from bruce bc that's how he responds to cass's failures. one day i will read war games and feel more hatred for bruce wayne than ever thought possible) the way she is such a well-developed character with thought out strengths that are also her flaws and pitfalls . and then tmk that just never happens again ? insane
one aspect i wish more people understood about them: so so so many people have said this but she's not daddy's perfect little girl she's not quiet she's not bruce's obedient soldier she's so loud in her actions you can see her thought process in her body language. she doesn't do all of this for bruce, she does this for herself, hers and bruce's morals have just happened to align so she does put him on that pedestal but if bruce's morals ever weakened he would fall off it so quickly. and also being bruce's fave bc their morals and dedication to the mission align so much.......... that is not a good thing for cass
one (or more) headcanons i have about this character: i think there could be something really poignant about cass learning to connect w her chinese heritage bc there's no fucking way she was raised with it and also no way bruce wayne's white ass is helping her do that. i think she wanders to chinatown and strikes a friendship w a middle aged immigrant lady and neither of them speak english perfectly but they communicate through actions and cass goes to festivals and events and wanders through the market during the day and as batgirl she keeps a closer eye on them do you see what i'm getting at
one character i love seeing them interact with: DUKE!!!!!!!!!!! they're so supportive of each other they're my best sibs and also i'm working on a more coherent post abt this but there's such fun parallels between them like the ways they are individually very perceptive and how much bruce sees them as salvation. as the future of his mission. they're also both stubborn as hell so i bet they have the pettiest arguments in the world
one character i wish they would interact with/interact with more: HMMMMM my initial thought is cass and renee team up because i love renee which could alternatively be called "which one of these lesbians can hate themselves more? let's find out!" rose wilson could be fun they could be fighting or teaming up i just don't want slade there
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have that involve them and one other character: duke and cass have frequent sleepovers at each other's places but sleepovers also means "i was out all day/night fighting crime and this was the closest place to crash" and they don't talk much but they are the touchy feely-est people you will ever see w each other when they're tired

I have been plagued with all these prompts and ideas and need to put them somewhere so…
TANGLED FICS THEMES/SCENARIOS I NEED TO SEE MORE OF!!
-Cassandra being the dark kingdoms heir and using her powers to rebuild the kingdom, further more, Cass actually being a good queen and many people being happy under her rule. It would provide an interesting plot with Rapunzel being unsure of what to do, she wants to rebuild and better her friendship with Cassandra but it seems she’s moved on is happy and actually doesn’t want any contact with Rapunzel (maybe even going as far as to ban her from the dark kingdom, and attacking her when she tries to talk to her) meanwhile Cass dealing with her own internal struggles. Which would be basically the same in the show but without gothel.
-Rapunzel and Varian acting like actually siblings, cute happy making cupcakes and singing and playing with each other freckle siblings is cute, but I know from observing my family with siblings that it’s a lot more than that. I just need one fic where Rapunzel and Varian are play fighting and Rapunzel starts to win so Varian just starts screaming “ARIANNA! ARIANNA! RAPUNZEL’S HITTING ME!” While Rapunzel starts bribing him to shut up with like 10 bucks and a cool rock (based on real events)
-I need more fics of Varian being a normal teenager, I know when it comes to Varian no one’s first thought is “normal” but I just think it’s funny to imagine Varian coming to the castle after like 2 days off, and he’s noticeably grouchy and also Quirin’s walking with him looking upset aswell. When Rapunzel and Eugene go “Quirin what’s up with Varian?” He just goes “Varian thought it was a good idea to sneak out at three am two nights ago, so he’s grounded it’s straight to work and straight back home when work is over.” Just normal silly teenage antics.
-Varian and lance content. C’mon they were such a funny duo! I just want to see them hanging out. They fall so much into “responsible one who just wanted a normal day” and “silly one who completely derails any chance of things going to plan” and it’s hilarious
-AU’s where Caine is a bigger villain then she was in canon. I feel like I’m not the only one who thought Caine would play a much larger role than she did, I mean her motive is so interesting! A girl who lost her father due to a petty crime that was treated far to seriously for what it was (I don’t think her specifies that it was a petty crime but considering she makes a point to mention the large crack down on crimes when Rapunzel when missing I’m willing to bet her father was locked up for life for something like stealing some food or being a pickpocket) plus her personality seems to cool for her to NEVER be utilized more.
-VAT7K fics that don’t push Nuru into the “mom friend, medic/healer” trope. Let her be a teen girl who’s finally letting loose, getting to be free from her stuffy princess life. I want to see it, also need more fics centered around Hugo and Nuru’s dynamic. Varian and Eugene fall into the “annoying little brother and his tired older brother” but Hugo and Nuru are peak “annoying little sister and her equally annoying and immature older brother”
-Lance being smart! I love it when characters we normally would say are the “dumb best friend” get to show they are intelligent, they just choose not to show it. I can just see a scene where everyone is ignoring Lance’s ideas for how to handle something and he just gets so mad he yells out his idea so everyone has to hear it and they just go “oh… that’s actually a good plan…huh” and then lance is upset there’s a bit of mild angst and then apologizes and comfort at the end
Anyway that’s my idea dump that I needed off my chest

I love your writing.
if it's not too much trouble may i make a request? I'm thinking the Dimitrescu women meeting and/or courting a fellow immortal.
the circumstances of the immortal's powers and possession of immorality are entirely up to you. I just like the idea of them meeting someone they could literally spend forever with...because they deserve it ❤
I wasn't sure if you wanted a story or headcanons? I went with HCs, here, but if you wanted more of a drabble or whatever just lemme know and I'll write something like that.
Also, I got excited and carried away so this has the whole Dimitrescu family, plus shorter ones for both Mother Miranda and Donna. Admittedly Alcina's is also a little on the shorter side? I tried to write everything that came to mind, but I am kinda tired right now, sorry. Might reblog this and add some more later.
(Under read-more for length)
Cassandra:
Tries (and fails) to hide her excitement. Mortality is one of the bigger things that has made her keep her distance to others, at least in the past. Every Maiden she’s ever been the slightest bit smitten with, up until this point, has been incredibly fragile. Seeing as she’s not exactly the softest person, one can easily imagine why that would be a turn off for her. But now that’s no longer a problem!
On the other had… having an immortal partner gives Cassandra pause. Why? Because what if they breakup? Normally, she can just, ahem, “dispose” of any exes (regardless of how much it hurts) so she doesn’t have to see them/deal with them anymore. If that’s not an option, she’ll definitely take longer than usual to do anything about her feelings. She wants to be sure, 100%, before she gets in over her head. Chances are she won’t hold back for as long as she wants though.
Likely to have a loud, messy confession. She’ll have been avoiding you for a few days, always ducking out of whatever rooms you enter, leaving you both hurt and confused. After enlisting the help of her sisters, you’ll be able to corner her outside. She’ll tell you, under no uncertain circumstances, to leave her alone. But you’ll refuse, demanding an explanation.
“I thought we had something. I thought you cared,” you’ll snap, eyes watering. “If that’s changed… if I was wrong, just tell me. I’ll leave and I’ll never come back.” Cue thunder and raining (because tropes) and Cassandra dramatically pulling you into a kiss, holding you so tightly you think you might bruise. Then she’s demanding that you stay, refusing to apologize but making it clear just how much she does care.
Being immortal, you’re not as defenseless as some of Cassandra’s past interests. Naturally, she doesn’t get quite as protective as she normally would. She’ll still have your back no matter what, ready to fight by your side against any foe, and will probably consider doing so a “fun bonding activity”. Oh, some lycans are encroaching on Dimitrescu territory? Time to go destroy them, as a power couple!
Despite having all the time in the world, Cassandra won’t change much of her actual courting behavior, nor the rate at which things advance. She’s still gonna get handsy fairly early on, still gonna “rah!” at you in the hallways, and still going to struggle with her jealousy.
Immortality Compatibility: I can see Cassandra going for another vampire (or vampire adjacent) creature, or someone demonic. She likes her lovers a bit rough, with some nice bite to their personalities. If you’ve got sharp teeth, or claws, or glowing eyes? Oh boy, she’s gonna be making heart eyes at you all the time.
Bela:
If your immortality isn’t immediately obvious, Bela is over the moon with joy when she finds out. Her eyes will go wide for a moment, before she tries to seem calm (so as to not freak you out), but her heart is pounding. This is what she’s been hoping for. As much as Mother Miranda has done for her family, there’s no guarantee that she’d be willing to give more. Even if Miranda granted Bela’s lover her “gift”, there was no telling what the results would be, or if the lover would survive. Now that there’s no need for such a transformation, it’s far easier for Bela to imagine herself in love (and eventually be in love).
Slow-burn romance over a decade or longer, oops. Doesn’t even necessarily mean to take things so slowly, just doesn’t feel a need to rush things, preferring that they develop organically. With both of you having unlimited time, you’re both used to working on a very large timescale. Maidens watching the two of you probably place bets on how long it’ll take you to hold hands for the first time. Everyone knows it’s coming, but no matter how much Cassandra and Daniela complain, Bela refuses to jump into things. By the time the two of you are officially together, you’re probably madly in love with each other.
More protective than Cassandra, if only because she knows just how rare you are. Immortal or not, you likely still have a weakness, and Bela will do everything in her power to make sure no one else knows what it is. If applicable, she will also ensure she has a countermeasure readily available. For example: If you were weak to fire, she’d make sure that the castle keeps extinguishers handy, just in case. Though they should probably already do that. Not that the Dimitrescu family cares much for OSHA compliance.
Somehow grows more in love with you with every passing year, and makes sure that you know this. Whether you’ve been together for one year or one century (because in this house we ignore canon), she’s always performing little acts of love, giving constant reminders of how strongly she feels. Gifts, special dates, book recommendations, etc.
Immortality Compatibility: Bela seems like the type to go for someone with a calming presence, and perhaps somewhat of a contrast to herself. I can picture her with someone somewhat angelic, or druidic, someone very in tune with nature. She’d love to feed deer with you and relax in the forest! Or lay against a tree by your side, listening to you talk about various microorganisms for hours at a time.
Daniela:
Practically tackles you when she finds out/connects the dots. This is just like one of her romance novels, where a lonely (attractive as fuck) immortal spends years in isolation before finally meeting the love of their life, who they get to spend the rest of eternity with. Absolutely ecstatic about the whole situation. Won’t stop kissing you and pulling you close, rambling about how great it’s gonna be to spend your lives together. Honestly? Kind of overwhelming. You might have to remind her a few times that you don’t have to rush into things, considering you have all the time in the world.
Introduces you to people as her “super cool/rad immortal life partner”. Genuinely cannot bring herself to not brag about you. If her sisters haven’t found someone like you yet, you can bet that Daniela will tease them about it all the time (much to their annoyance). If Momma Alcina doesn’t, though? Dani will keep her thoughts to herself, thank you very much (being grounded at her age does not impress the s/o).
Tries not to show it, but she’s actually very nervous. You’re immortal! You’ve probably seen a lot of shit (she certainly has)! Worries about keeping you interested in her, though she would never admit it. This tends to lead to her performing ridiculous acts to showcase her affection, regardless of the cost or, like, whether or not you’d even enjoy whatever she has planned. In order to counter her anxiety, you’ll want to reassure her whenever you can, and give her plenty of “I love you”s.
Strikes a decent balance between Cassandra’s nonchalant attitude and Bela’s protectiveness. Will defend you if you need it, playing up the romantic aspect, but also entirely willing to hide behind you in a scary situation.
Immortality Compatibility: Having probably read Twilight… Dani would date a werewolf, as long as they weren’t the smelly kind. Also interested in a sort of “magical”/elemental type, especially if their powers are influenced by emotions. In other words, if someone flirts with her in front of you, and your response is to subconsciously light your hands/the other person on fire? She thinks that’s hot, pun intended.
Alcina:
“Oh? Interesting,” she’d say, smiling softly (and trying to ignore the heat rushing to her face). Similarly to Cassandra, she’d try to play it off, not wanting to seem too excited. And, well, she’s not as excited as any of her daughters are. After all, she’s had more time than them to “get used” to the idea of outliving any potential romantic interests. So, she’s not exactly desperate for a relationship, even with someone she could spend an eternity with.
That being said, if she is romantically interested in them, she’s very relieved. Outliving a loved one can be incredibly traumatizing (fuck you c*pcom, you know what you did), and knowing that you’re safe (or at least safer than most) brings her no small amount of comfort.
Also, just glad to have another person close to her age around. Her daughters are somewhat stuck as young adults, and I imagine Alcina would want someone who gained immortality a little later in life, such as herself, as opposed to, ya know, reminding her of her children. That probably goes without saying. Hopefully.
More so than her daughters, Alcina would change her level of protectiveness depending on her s/o’s power level. If you’re a shapeshifter who can also turn into a big ass dragon? Then she’s not going to coddle you. If you’re immortal but still vulnerable, then she’s going to do her best to keep you safe, even going so far as to enlist the assistance of her daughters. “If you see a single Maiden growing mistletoe, or bringing some in from the village, let me know immediately,” or something like that, depending on your weakness.
Immortality Compatibility: Definitely would want someone in a situation similar to herself, having once been truly human, only to be “elevated” by something. Bonus points if you’re another disciple of Miranda, double bonus points if Miranda specifically “made” you to be Alcina’s boo/honey/darling/dear.
Bonus! Mother Miranda:
Oh god finally someone who won’t leave her (can’t leave her). No one can take you away from her, and that’s a relief that she’s been craving for over a century. Even if romance isn’t high on her priority list, she welcomes it with open arms, glad to have someone by her side through all of life’s chaos.
Admittedly slow to trust at first, probably just using you as a tool at first. But prove yourself enough, show that your devotion is more than just misdirected self-interest, and she’ll start to warm up to you. Forming a real relationship would likely take a couple decades, similar to with Bela. Once you are together, however, the two of you are inseparable in all matters.
You’d be her #1 follower, most trusted adviser, and the only person allowed to understand 100% of her thoughts and motives. While Miranda wouldn’t allow you to be seen as the same level as her (sorry), you’d still be a legend among the villagers. To them, you’re Mother Miranda’s champion, the epitome of a devoted follower that they all aspire to emulate. Not that they know the two of you are a couple, though.
Immortality Compatibility: No gimmicks, no cheap tricks, she wants (and respects) a fellow scientist, someone who clawed their way through adversity and forged themselves into something indestructible. Double the interest if you did so for a similar cause to her own, as she would appreciate your ability to relate to her suffering.
Bonus! Donna:
Someone to play with! FOREVER! No more losing people she cares about, no more accidentally breaking people, no more people scrambling to leave. Now that she has you, she can finally spend some quality time with another (living?) person. Honestly her dolls (or at least Angie) are just as excited as she is. Regardless of her relations with the other three Lords, Donna much prefers the company of a lover.
For real though she’s shy as hell and you might not even realize who’s pulling the strings until you’ve been in her house for over a year. She’d probably use her powers to trap you inside, at least at first, though they’d be nice hallucinations. You’d have to treat the dolls nicely, especially Angie, before she’d let you interact with her.
Eventually you’d be allowed to leave, and you’d be given a key to return whenever you wanted to. Assuming that you do, in fact, come back, the two of you would have a very, very slow romance, if only because of Donna’s anxiety. Hand holding makes both of your faces turn beet red, seriously.
Immortality Compatibility: *chanting* GHOST GIRLFRIEND GHOST GIRLFRIEND POLTERGEIST PARTNER POLTERGEIST PARTNER WOOHOO! Something with a flexible, only-sometimes-tangible form, who absolutely could have left at any time but didn’t because they wanted to stay.

I bet at a certain point Cassandra and Max don't even fight because it's the last piece of food and just do it to fuck with each other. Like Max has something Cassandra wants to try but both know she's definitely not going to ask for a piece so catch her lunging across the table and tackling Max for a bite. After a huge tussle both go back to their seats like nothing happened and continue eating
Max just stares intensely at Cassandra because she has the salt and Max needs it. And when Cass finally makes eye contact to ask them what the fuck they're looking at Max just yeets themself over the table and the two just fight for like twenty minutes. Then they finish and Max takes the salt and goes back to their seat while Cass dusts herself off and sets her chair back up.
And everyone else around them is left to wonder what the fuck just happened.
Alcina doesn't even try to intervene at this point. She's tired of getting her arms clawed because apparently these two are equally feral.

Jaws of Hakkon - Party Banter
Sera: The veil is wobbly here.
Dorian: Perhaps a bit warbly instead?
Cassandra: Certainly not! It's much more squeaky.
Iron Bull: I was going with spicy.
Vivienne: Don't be ridiculous, darling. It's clearly snarky.
Blackwall: You sure it isn't wiggly?
Varric: I'd say more wonky, myself.
Sera: What? Let me check. Sensing. Sense-y. Definitely wobbly.
Solas: (Sighs.)
~
Vivienne: Demons still scare you, dear? After all we've been through? Might you have suffered some form of injury as a child?
Sera: You and yours are the broken ones. Being scared of things that are scary is normal. Your "training" is the weird thing. Ask anyone who's not one of you.
Vivienne: Because I have been trained not to be afraid?
Sera: It's like... you're scabbed over or something. Makes me wonder what else you don't feel.
(Alternatively, if the Inquisitor is in a romance with Sera.)
Sera: It's like you don't feel. Not like Inky/Buckles/Shiny/Teetness/Tadwinks/Honey Tongue, anyway.
Vivienne: I feel everything in the proper measure.
Sera: Right. Because you're normal. Just ask you.
~
Dorian: For hating the outdoors, you sure seem to like bad weather.
Sera: What's that now?
Dorian: The other day, you were outside in the rain, staring up with a grin on your face.
Sera: I smile at clouds.
Dorian: Of course you do.
Sera: What, I should hunch and swear at the rain pissing off my nose? Let the weather win? I smile the frig out of clouds. Maybe they get tired of trying.
Dorian: Are we still talking about clouds?
Sera: What
Dorian: Never mind. Drinks and insults later?
Sera: We're both buying. Then there's double.
~
(Stone-Bear Hold, passing by the landmark “In Fear of Hryngnar'' located next to Trainer Arrken Feldsen.)
Dorian: Every time I think I've seen the ugliest possible Avvar statue, a new one turns up that surpasses my expectations.
Sera: Creepy. Needs a hat. And breeches.
Blackwall: Maybe a mustache?
Sera: (Laughs.) Oh, that's good! We can draw one with soot!
Vivienne: Hmm. Cover it in gold leaf and it wouldn't be terrible.
~
(Nigel’s Point)
Dorian: The ancient Imperium did like to leave a mark. I wonder how long they stayed?
(Old Temple)
Dorian: Tevinter architecture at its finest. This just screams "I hated my parents and had no friends as a child," doesn't it?
(Razikale’s Reach)
Dorian: Makes you wonder about the sad, mid-level bureaucrat who thought building an outpost here would be a career boost.
(Tevinter ruins)
Cassandra: The Imperium reached even here.
Varric: I'm starting to think that if we went to the moon or the bottom of the sea, we'd find Tevinter ruins there.
~
(Swamp Kuldsdotten)
Dorian: I'm shocked I've never seen this plant before. It's so melodramatic, half the magisterium should be growing it.
Vivienne: Barbwood. A parasitic tree that grows through the body of its host. Useful in alchemy. Makes terrible furniture.
Dialogue options:
General: What do you use it for? [1]
General: Why is it terrible? [2]
[1] General: What do you use it for?
PC: What sort of uses does it have?
Vivienne: Vivienne: The sap makes potent restorative potions. Extracts from the leaves are useful for transmutations. Harvesting either one is too dangerous to attempt often. More's the pity. If the Inquisition could get herbalists out here to harvest it, you could make a fortune. Or several.
[2] General: Why is it terrible?
PC: What's so terrible about it?
Vivienne: Barbwood doesn't die, it goes dormant. Spill one drop of water on it and it sprouts... and infests your other furniture. I knew a comte in Montsimmard who had it take over his dining room. The Circle cleared the infestation free of charge.
(Swamp Kuldsdotten)
Cole: The trees are fighting. They are very angry, but very slow.
Cassandra: Be prepared. There's no telling what trouble we'll find down here.
(Swamp Kuldsdotten)
Iron Bull: Good place to get ambushed. Watch your back.
Inquisitor: You do know it's not physically possible to watch your own back.
Iron Bull: And now I'm thinking about it.
Inquisitor: Is there such a thing as a good place to get ambushed?
Iron Bull: "Pitch-black swampy wilderness," is at the bottom, next to armories and anyplace with hooks hanging from the ceiling. Everything else you rank in descending order from there. Expensive glassware shops, wine cellars, maybe an Orlesian ball. Those would be good places.
(Swamp Kuldsdotten)
Blackwall: How can it be so dark?
Sera: Because there’s no light, silly.
Blackwall: Ah... yes, that must be it.
~
(Cloudcap Lake)
Sera: Ugh, smells like the lake chucked its innards.
Inquisitor: I suppose you hate fish, too?
Sera: I like them cooked or hidden under some nob's furniture. Not up my nose.
Inquisitor: Put it out of your mind if it bothers you.
Sera: I can't out-think the air. Is that a special Herald power? Can't wait for the chant about that.
(Varsdotten River)
Blackwall: I wonder what they're catching up here. Sunfish? Trout?
Varric: How do fish even get into the mountains? Can they climb?
Sera: Fish stink until fried. Then get in my mouth.
~
(Tree bridge)
Dorian: Everyone remember not to look down.
Sera: If you close your eyes it's like flying. I bet, anyway. Don't do it, you'll fall. Which is flying, but shit.
Inquisitor: I may have already looked.
Dorian: (if the Inquisitor is in a romance with Dorian) Just try not to think about it. Or fall. I'd have to jump down after you. It would be very touching and so melodramatic it would become tiresome.
Dorian: (if the Inquisitor is in a romance with Cullen) Just try not to think about it. Or fall. Falling would be worse. I am not going to be the one to explain to Cullen that I let you fall to your death from a tree.
Dorian: (if the Inquisitor is in a romance with Josephine) Just try not to think about it. Or fall. Falling would be worse. I have no desire to tell Josephine that I let you fall to your doom from a tree in the middle of nowhere.
Dorian: (if the Inquisitor is in another romance/unromanced) Just try not to think about it. Or fall. Falling would be worse. Nobody wants to be the one to tell the world the Inquisitor fell off a log into an abyss.
Inquisitor: Are you saying that because you already did?
Dorian: Let's not start a whole game of, "Who looked down and suddenly felt the weight of their own mortality," shall we? Some of us have to concentrate on walking. If you do happen to look down, I also don't recommend thinking about how far it is to the ground.

Out on Allen Street, it’s 7 in the Morning
Set in the same-ish Street Siblings universe as First Contact by @cryptids-and-muses and @a-sketchy-character @streetsiblings (they’re awesome), I present my own built-on concept. It’s a bit angstier but sue me I’m an angst ball
AO3 | Deluge
Chapter 1: Drizzle
Jason Todd loved the rain. He remembered it pattering on the roof as he dozed off into the night, curled up with Sparky. Times spent splashing in puddles. Drawing a rare smile from Catherine as bright as the morning sun. Days without Willis, his head stuck in a worn copy of Huckleberry Finn and the ambience set only by the rain as it tracked ran down the window he leant on.
It was raining when Jason woke to his mother’s lax corpse, ears drowning out every sound except the rain’s as it plinked in time with the droplets that dripped down her arm.
--
In front of her, Faizul’s corpse is still. So still that Cassandra Cain can almost block out how the man’s body only radiated pain and fear and agony so strong-and-she-did-that-with-her-hands-her-hands-so-red-and-.
But she can’t, her head is still drowning in the memory, and all she can think about is the fear emptiness that settles in her body. Her gift to understand movement as if it were a language, she learns, is nothing more than a curse when Death comes by her hand. She wrings her red fist, as tainted as her soul because of what she had done. She looks away.
Father David has his arms outstretched, a smile so sharp and so bright that if he were any other man, she would have thought he was proud. He is, but underneath, Cassandra can see nothing but sick and profound glee at what she can do. The decision is easy.
As Cassandra springs out the window, its hinges blew wide open, her father David keeled over, the sky crackles and runs with the long red rivulets off her arms.
--
Now, five months later, Jason ducks his head under the fire escape in an empty alley, the rain in a duet with the nightlife of Gotham. He allows himself some respite as it steadily washes the grime off his surroundings, a pleasant ratatatata above the ambient din that is the dark of Gotham. He is so tired, but he’ll have to move soon if he wants to stay out of sight of kidnappers and killers and whatever else haunts the shadows of Gotham.
A howl slices through the Gotham night as some mug gets his face slammed into a wall. Jason knows this because he can see it right now as the same mook gets decked by a – a girl. Anyone on the streets knows that girls can hold their own but seeing some thirty-something-year-old man get his ass handed to him by a pixie of a girl – he thinks she’s his age, somehow – is something else. Seriously, the guy looks terrified out of his mind as he runs with his tail between his legs after a particularly nasty hit to his crotch.
As if sensing his gaze, the girl snaps her head to him, locking him in place.
“Uh… Hi?” Jason raises his hand in an awkward wave which the girl mimics, albeit a bit stilted, her head on a tilt. The silence between the two of them stretches until the girl seems to see something in him and nods. Out of ideas, Jason digs around his bag and produces a fresh enough apple.
“I’m Jason.” He points to himself.
A beat, and then the girl repeats the gesture.
“Cuh, cuh, cuh,” She struggles with the words, her forehead pinched. “Cuh, ah, ssss.”
“Cass?” The girl nods again, this time rigorously. Unsure of himself, Jason raises the apple to her. “Well, nice to meet you, Cass. You hungry?”
Cass grins, her eyes twinkling as she bites into the apple. Around them, the rain lessens. Just a little.
--
She watches two of her most precious children draw closer, children who will laugh and cry and burn for her love. Gotham watches them come, raises her arms, and weeps with her joy.
“Jason and Cassandra against the world,” Is what Gotham would have said if she had a voice. For years, the city is content to watch her children. She observes Jason and Cassandra as they starve, as they fight, as they grow. On one night, the weather nothing but pluvial, she witnesses them come across the strange car in the alleyway owned by her first child. On that night, she watches as the Dark Knight comes across her most perfect pair of children.
--
“Cassandra,” She looks up at the man they had been living under for the past two months, Bruce. She makes no answer, only staring blankly at him–they were betting on seeing how long it took for the man to get uncomfortable when she does that–who stares back. He continues as if they had not been staring for a full minute, which is not to Cass’ benefit. “Do you know where Jason is?”
Cass, willing to keep trying, keeps her gaze unrepentant. Under her scrutiny, the Dark Knight’s demeanour finally cracks a little. Internally, Cass is ecstatic, but she still really wants to milk it as she keeps up the act.
“Someone call for me?” Jay comes down the stairs. Finally, Cass can break her façade.
“Good morning, slob.” The slob, honest to god, freezes.
“No,” He grinds out of his teeth.
“Yes,” Cass gives him a crooked smile. “slob.”
“Am I missing something here?” Bruce is frowning. Oh right, he was ignorant to their scheme.
“Slob,” Cass repeats with feeling and delights at Jay’s fuming. “S-L-O-B. It means Stupid-Loser-Of-Bets,” She looks Jay dead in the eye again and calls him by the name.
Bruce frowned even further (his body projects such honest confusion that Cass almost laughs). “I was not aware you two had made a bet.”
“A bet I lost because of you, old man!” Jay pipes up, suddenly fuming at Bruce. “You’re Batman, and you can’t even keep from cracking when some girl stares at you for longer than a minute?”
Cass does not hold in her laughter anymore, something she broadcasts to all gathered. Bruce sighs, but at least he waits for her to calm down before he gets to his point.
“Regardless… I need you two to come with me to my office,” As the man leaves, the two share a glance.
“You gonna go after him?”
“You first, slob,” Jay grumbles the entire way to the office, where Bruce waves them in.
For a few seconds, the man awkwardly shifts before he pulls a sheaf of papers from behind his desk.
“I… I quite enjoy having the two of you here. With me,” Bruce admits, looking both of them in the eyes. He takes a deep breath. “I do not want to force this on either of you, but I would love to have you here with me for longer.”
“Permanently, even.”
Bruce lays out the papers on the desk, ‘Adoption Applications’ printed at the top. The letters draw a sharp breath from Jay, and Cass is confident enough with reading to understand what it means.
“Yes,” They both say immediately, and Bruce’s face goes softer than either have ever seen it.
When he asks for their surnames, Cass thinks about saying Cain. Instead, she says Todd.
Shyly, her russet orbs meet his azure ones expecting anger, but everything about Jason only projects love and acceptance. Her grin, something she had not got right yet, is almost identical to the one her brother wears.
“Always wanted a sister. Can’t do much better than you, eh, Cass?”
“Yes Jay,” she pauses. “slob.”
Outside, the sky is open in a light drizzle.
--
If there is anyone in the Waynes that Jason thinks is his favourite, it would be Alfred. An opinion he thinks Cass would be hard-pressed to disagree with. Of course, Cass is still in awe about the fact that Bruce Wayne is Batman (and isn’t that just fucking crazy), so it’s understandable. Conversely, Jason still remembers his first memory of the butler, a kind smile and welcoming arms that promised care for both of them.
“Master Jason,” The boy had looked up to see a crinkle in Alfred’s eyes that he had only ever seen from Catherine. The butler continued, somehow even softer than his usual. “Would you like me to fix that for you?”
Alfred gestured to Jason’s battered copy of Huckleberry Finn that he had cradled self-consciously to his chest. He refused, unsure why the butler seemed to be delighted to see Jason in the way only Cass and his Mom did. But there is something so trustworthy about the man that part of Jason is sure Alfred would do things like that no matter what he asked. So, automatic favourite.
--
Their older brother, Dick (“Aptly nicknamed,” Jay mutters under his breath.), yells whenever he comes to the manor. Most of his visits tend to cycle between him screaming at Bruce or yelling about them. He does make an effort to be a little quieter when he’s talking about the latter. Although, he still looks at Jay with an indecipherable mixture of emotions in his eyes. A pool caught between anger and something unknown to them. It’s not something that upsets Cass, but it puts both of them off, nonetheless.
On the other hand, Barbara is a little more forward in her dislike of the new kids. More often than not, her ire seems aimed at Cass specifically. Privately, Cass thinks Barbara was still angry about Bruce taking her role as Batgirl and giving it to Cass. But, she can see how every time the older girl gets less hostile, another part of her body was long past the role anyway. So, she doesn’t hold it against Oracle.
--
“C’mon Cass, repeat after me,” Jason waves the pages in Cass’ face, which elicits a giggle from his sister. Her giggling unbalances the both of them, so they have to waste another couple of minutes to make themselves comfortable again.
“What’s the use you learning to do right when it’s troublesome to do right and ain’t no trouble to do wrong, and the wages is just the same?”
Cass repeats the words, but she struggles at ‘troublesome’, so Jason repeats it for her. Silence, and then.
“What mean?” He thinks she isn’t asking about the word.
“Well, Mom used to say that it was just that. It might be harder to do the right thing, but it’d be better since you at least did it properly,” Satisfied, his sister merely nods and tries the words again. This time, she only takes three tries until she gets ‘troublesome’ right.
“I think she would have liked you,” He murmurs between phrases and instantly regrets it when Cass’ head turns to him so sharply she jostles him. He is about to brush it off when she nods her head shyly, snuggling closer to Jason.
He thinks, as they keep reading, that things are going to turn out alright. He has Robin now, and Robin gives him magic. Not only that but he’s also got Cass as Batgirl. Sure, she has that weird stitch mask covering her face, but it’s so fitting that he cannot imagine Cass with any other kind of costume. He knows her, and she knows him. For years she has been the sister he never knew he needed.
Together, Jason muses, they’re going to shake the whole damn world.
--
Whether they're from the Justice League or otherwise, everyone is always ready with a snide comment directed towards them. Or, more specifically, Jason. They use words and insults that don’t make sense to her, but she can see them affect her brother. When she asks, all he does is brush her off with lies and platitudes that they both know are fake. It isn’t until Troia huffs and says something that has waves of hurt rolling off Jason’s body that Cass decides she’s had enough.
“Honestly, I can’t believe you’d think you’d ever be like – ow!” Troia, poise flooded with nothing but condescension (she’s too angry to be elated at remembering a word Jason taught her) that Cass quickly corrects with a sharp jab. Like a deer in headlights, she turns and somehow has the gall to look indignant (another word). “Who did – Batgirl?”
“What, are you doing?” Troia fucking blinks. “Why are you treating my brother like this?”
She doesn’t even look guilty.
“Oh, don’t worry about all that. I don’t think it’s anything you’d understand anyway,”
She bends down towards her, apparently not noticing how still she is. Anyone who knows anything about Cassandra Todd knows her stillness means Death. Evidently, Troia is an exception. She's the only one in the room that's relaxed.
“Some people are simply born for this role. No street rat can ever hope to achieve that.”
Cassandra moves before anyone even blinks, her arms a flurry of jabs and punches and vicious kicks as she catches Troia off guard. Even when she finally regains her footing, the Amazon doesn't stand a sliver of a chance as Cassandra lays into her.
A block from Troia awards a savage stomp on her shin. A punch ducked under and followed through into a sequence of blows to the Amazon’s chest. When Troia grips her lasso and tries to restrain Cassandra, the girl only slinks her way past and wrestles it from her hands. Quickly and efficiently, she wraps it around the Amazon’s waist and pulls. For someone so small, Cassandra manages to lift Troia with the lasso with enough strength that when she releases it, the Amazon goes flying into a pillar in the Watchtower with a sharp crack.
Cass picks up her brother and shields him from the Leaguers, indifferent to their shocked and judgemental eyes.
The message is clear.
Even though they’re lost in a veritable sea of people, it still ends up being just the two of them, and Cass is more than okay with that.

Maribat ideas I will probably never write
Now, before we start.
I realize that those may have already been made but I've never seen them and everything here came from my mind. But if you remember the titles, please tell me them or send a link to the stories, I'd love to read them.
This can be whatever ship you want Connorette, Daminette, Cassandra x Marinette, Brucinette... Any ship.
Here I'll refer to them just as the bats or one of the bats, or just choose a random one of them simply because I don't know the exact person that'd fit in the au with Marinette so I'm just leaving it up to you but... yeah.
[And yes, I know I said it could be Connor or Jon or anyone else, and I know they are not part of Batclan but for the lack of better word, just roll with it]
Yes, you can use any of them, but please tag me (i really want to read what you came up with) and include the link to my post so maybe someone else could use any other of these.
And if want to add anything or just brainstorm in the comments I'd love to do it with you, so don't be shy and say what you think (constructive critism only).
Maybe i will update this, but for now feel free to use any of these over 20 (i think at least) ideas I came with in these past 2 weeks cuz i was bored.
And before you start, I'm thinking of making mafia boss! Marinette AU, but i don't know what ship it should be... Suggestions? (Just not the love square please)
Hope you like it.
-------------------------------------------------------
Violinist Marinette. The Waynes got invited to a concert in which Mari played a solo. And they're all just enchanted with her talent.
Marinette a Badass Dancer. None of the bats is a dancer in this AU and I don't really have any direction where this would go, but i just had a scene where she kicks their asses even though she doesn't have much (or any) exprience in martial arts. Just her spinning and kicking one of them mid-spin in the face or... somewhere else...
So the scene is a Wayne Gala, right? Jagged Stone dares Marinette to sing a song on a stage (there’s live music band, i guess?). Everyone’s mesmerised by her voice and Jagged can be heard screaming “That’s my niece!” in the backround. I really want her to sing Creep , a cover by Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox ft. Haley Reinhart or Crazy in Love , also a cover made by Sofia Karlberg, though any other song is fine too
Bats and Marinette in a band. That's it. That's the whole AU.
One of the bats is sitting under a tree, all peacefully and relaxed, but then they look up to see a random girl with dark blue hair (??) just hanging upside down from a branch like an actual freaking bat. She gives them a heart attack.
Another Au with singing Marinette lol. In this one Marinette likes to sing in a park every other day and Damian comes here one day and hears her and is like “wow.”, and since then he comes there everyday in hopes of hearing her sing and getting her number. And maybe Luka or Adrien play while she sings, that’d be cool
Guys, Marinette and the Waynes being neighbours. No, but imagine. Them seeing some girl watering plants every week for a month or two and then not seeing her for a long period of time, and they're kinda worried, but then she's back and they're confused, because where the hell she'd been, the house looked like not used and just where the hell was she? Marinette seeing some... Weird things happening in the Wayne backyard. Balconies being in front of each other, so they're balcony neighbours too (the romance, the fluff, even the angst, guys). Marinette going to them with baked goods and introducing herself as their neighbour. Them going to hers and welcoming her with a basket of Alfred's cooking.
Jason has to participate in a dating show because he lost a bet and Mari's one of the participants too...
Duke needs a date to a wedding (i don't know whose, your choice) and Marinette's his best friend, so be my fake date to this wedding?
Marinette as Tim's daughter??
The greatest showman AU. (Sibling dickinette. On the trapeze-)
Forget rouges, superheroes and vigilantes. Underground dancers. Because it's what i need, y'all
So in this, WE is a dance company, and Marinette's maybe an intern in a fashion department. One day Dick's going to one of the practice rooms where's been scheduled a meeting with a designer for his costume for the next show. Instead he's met with a girl he sees for the first time, practically flying on the dance floor. Just as he's about to reveal himself the rest comes and it turns out this is the fashion designer and it seems as no one knows she's an amazing dancer too
Teachers AU + Rivals AU = utter chaos. Them teaching the same subject and competing for their class' loves and/or arguing whose close is better. [Bonus points if everyone's thinking they hate each others guts, but they're secretly dating]
Fencers AU - on the same team on different teams, your choice. (And this honestly suits with Kagami too. I'm up for kagami x bat/marinette)
Damian in the park with Mar'i, but he's having trouble, because this kid has so much energy. How?? Just when he thinks he can take a breath, he notices Mar'i has wandered off and is talking to a young woman, so he rushes there and try to apologize, but she says it's no problem at all. Suddenly this gorgeous girl offers him her help. It looks like Mar'i has taken liking to her and he's so tired, so he agrees and for the rest day watches two Mari's play together and falls in love with the older one. Plotwist: this was plan all along. Mar'i is the ultimate wingwoman.
All the Wayne siblings decided to go to one of those haunted houses for a halloween and there's this petite girl who tagged along their group somehow. They didn't expect to see this tiny girl punching the worker dressed as a monster and knocking the daylight out of him. But it was so worth getting kicked out.
Marinette's a ghost and these four men came to her house and apparently they're doing a ghost investigation?? I mean, she was getting a bit lonely and bored, maybe it's time to "gain some friends" (read: scare the living out of them).
Pretty much the above but with bat/s as ghost/s and Marinette as the paranormal investigator with her team (i honestly want one of them to be Kagami, i don't know why). In both you need to decide who's a skeptic and who believes. It's fun, the ghost is trying to scare them off, but they're stubborn.
Sibling dickinette where Marinette calls her older brother everytime she wants to get out of a date and so he pretends to "arrest" her. (And then maybe dick decides to play a matchmaker and sets her up with one of his adoptive siblings)
Marinette as a lawyer. Her going against LexCorps who framed Wayne Enterprises for something. Or maybe Bruce was accused of murder (that he obviously did not commit) and now she has to prove his innocence. I just really want to read about badass lawyer Marinette, guys
Merlin AU. Is there any AUs with Marinette being Merlin and saving Arthur's ass (I honestly think it should be Chloe, no joke)?
Mominette where she adopts Cassandra. I just imagined them going to ballet lessons together and cooking and now I'm soft.
Marinette got dared by her friends to set a trap for the passerby that involved eggs, toy train and glitter and to then to pretend they're her ex and they cheated in her, and Jason had the misfortune to be that passerby. (Yes, this is probably crack lol)
Tim can rap. Marinette can rap. What could go wrong?? (Yes, this is probably crack too)
There's this girl they see every year when to go on trick-or-treating and she always has the most amazing or scariest costumes. But Damian will not go without a fight and so every year they compete over who has the better costume. This year they just so conveniently dressed up as the famous Halloween couple.
Jon is 17 now and it seems as no one is interested in him. He jokingly tells Damian he supects theres a ghost that's in love with him and they keep away any potential lovers from him. He doesn't know how much he's right. Marinette though, is freaking out.
Marinette decided to take a part-time job at a local pool as a life guard. There's a sudden increase in people coming to said pool but also a dramatic increase in people pretending to drown. Conner is one of them.
Marinette plays a therapist to all of the batfam. The amount of the ridiculous problems she had to listen to... She could write a book and she would make millions out of it, she swears.
"Some say "revenge is a dish best served cold.", then i read "revenge is sweet", so i came to conclusion revenge is ice cream." Huh, so that'd explain the sudden disappearance of ice cream in whole Gotham Jason had been hearing about for the past week from Bruce. The question is, what that petite bluenette is planning to do and who is going to be a victim of her ice cream revenge?
Tim had been in coma for a month after the drug bust, and he has just woken up. The first thing he does? He picks up the argument he and Marinette had been having before he's been put into a coma.
The couple at the place Jason had been at, started making out loudly, so he started making loud noises while eating his ice cream. They stopped. And he got this cute barista's phone number when she was walking past him.
Marinette's at the spa when she overhears two guys betting who can eat more slices of cucumber (that were supposed to be put on their eyelids) and she decided to participate. Safe to say they were all banned from all the spas in Gotham
Can i please get Jason/Duke/anyone making up a bedtime story for Marinette after she woke up from a nasty nightmare? I need it
Every morning and night Marinette pretends to be asleep just so she can feel Damian pull her closer, kiss her temple and whisper how much he loves her
Roy listening to Jason complaining about each first encounter of her girlfriend with his siblings and Bruce. Each is more ridiculous than the one before. He listens to it, after he and Marinette had gone through their own weird af first meeting.
Dick was so busy laughing at the bluenette who'd just walked into a post, he ran into the same post minute later. She asked him out... After she finished laughing and telling him karma's a bitch
Dick likes to think he's the reason Jason and Marinette got married. To his last days he will brag about how at his and Kori's wedding Marinette caught the bouquet, tripped and Jay caught her.
Jason asked Marinette on a date to one of the restaurant the WE owned. Then as a test, he told her he couldn't pay for all the expensive dishes they ordered. She took his hand and they ran out of the building. He's convinced he's going to marry her.

Tangled Salt Marathon - You're Kidding Me
Tumblr media
So we’ve finally come to the last of season two’s filler episodes. Let’s see if we can knock this one out real quick.
Summary: The front door of the mysterious seashell estate vanishes, trapping the group. They try to find another way out but find a spinning top whose magic regresses Cassandra and Lance into toddlers and Shorty into a baby.  They’ve only have an hour to find the top and reverse the effects or the changes become permanent. Unfortunately neither of Rapunzel’s or Eugene’s parenting methods keep their now childish friends on task.
So Why Did No One Stand Watch Last Night?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They were all sleeping right next to the entrance, and after the run in with the mirror monsters, you would think that they would have taken turns standing watch.
Tumblr media
But nope, the front door vanishes when no one was looking cause they don't have any foresight.
A Low Budget Doesn’t Excuse Filler
Tumblr media
Like most of season two, this is yet another episode that adds very little to the overall story. It’s slightly better than the Return of Quaid or Curses, but not by much. I put it on the same level as The Forest of No Return, as I do like the mains’ development, but there’s really no reason why such episodes exist to begin with.
The meta reason for staying in certain places for three episodes, instead of only one or two, is because of budgetary reasons. The crew have to build new sets and models for every new location or person the cast comes across. This costs money to make, so the higher ups wanted to reuse assets. Which is understandable, but not an excuse for utilizing them poorly.
If you need to stay in one area or have characters reappear, then you need to give story reasons for that. Ones that tie back to the overall narrative and/or the mains’ character arcs.
The shell house and Matthews should be more important than what they are as they both have connections to the ultimate big bad of the series.Adria shouldn’t be wasted for a whole episode when she’s the only one driving the plot in season two and has limited appearances. Vardaros and its people shouldn’t be a one and done thing if you’re going to spend so much time setting them up. And there’s still one off episodes, locations, and characters who aren’t brought back and add nothing
Not only does this make for a weaker story, it also undermines the cost saving measures that you tried to implement to begin with.
This Isn’t Representation!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Get it?!
She’s a top!
She’s totally gay, but like not really, cause this can also be interpreted as a dominatrix joke, and there’s no other real indication of her orientation outside her like smiling at her best friend/crush/sister sometimes and keeping that rose her creepy ex-boyfriend gave her.
Tumblr media
And don't give me any bullshit excuses about Disney not letting the crew make Cassandra canonly gay/bi.
The Owl House aired just this year, the same year as Tangled’s final season. Also Globby and Carl from Big Hero Six were both confirmed to be a couple on screen a month after this episode came out. Both shows would have been in development at the same time as Tangled was. Both would have been subject to the same regulations and restrictions while writing their stories.
It isn’t “Disney” that stopped the storyboard artists from having Cass be a confirmed lesbian, it’s Chris and Ben, the head writers themselves, who failed to write it into the story properly, if at all.
Chris is the one who made Raps and Cass “sisters”. Chris is the one who wouldn’t tell the crew about his ‘twists’. Chris is the one who had Cass crush on Andrew, even after he tried to kill her. Chris is the one who made Cassandra ‘straight’ and has since used gay baiting to keep her fanbase in his pocket.
Like I am really damn sick and tired of Casspunzel stans defending Chris on twitter, when he’s the very one who sunk thier ship to begin with. I’m also really fed up with certain fans trying to bully others for not accepting their “Cass is a lesbian” headcanons as fact because what the storyboarders say on twitter after the show is over with isn’t gospel and isn’t real rep.
I don’t care if you ship Cass with Raps or headcanon her as being gay. Ships and headcanons are great and can be a lot of fun. But fuck you if you ever try to shame people for not sharing your ships/headcanons. Not only is it biophobic and acephobic to insist that there’s only ever a binary option when it comes to orientation and shipping, but it also reinforces harmful stereotypes and tropes about people in the queer community.
Like, yes, I personally may be an introverted angry bitch who’s an LBGTQA member and activist, but that doesn’t mean that every introverted bitchy woman in media is a lesbian. What kind of message does that send people when that’s the only character archetype that’s given representation or is loudly proclaimed as ‘gay’ by the wider audience? Fuck that noise!
I Know Humor is Subjective but...WHY?
Tumblr media
Why did we give the baby a beard? How does that logically work? Did anyone outside of the crew actually find this funny?
TTS has like this one out of touch dude throwing out jokes that don’t really land with the target audience. Fans have called it ‘boomer humor’ but it’s actually ‘Gen-X’ humor. Not only because Chris and Ben are Gen Xers but because this is the type of crap my older brother would find hilarious.
Gen Xers are between Boomers and Millennials and so their humor is this weird blend of gross out shock humor, ironic nihilism, and out of date stereotypes that are only mildly better than those of the previous generation before them. They’re the generation who gave us Beavis and Butthead, South Park, and Clerks.
That’s not a criticism of Gen X as a generation, but rather just an acknowledgment that they’re worlds away from the neo-dada absurdism, more socially conscious, and globalized humor of Gen Z.
So Why Is the Bad Guy Telling the Heroes How to Foil His Plans?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like he not only tells them how to fix their problem and how long they got in order to do so, but he also informs them how it happened in the first place. This goes directly against his plans. Had he simply said nothing and stayed out sight, then Raps and Eugene would have been lost for the full hour and most likely not have saved everyone on time.
I like to headcanon that Mathews is just “that asshole” that loves to taunt and tease but in a that manner that gives him plausible deniability. He also may just be bored, since he’s a ghost trapped in one place all the time. Yet that still doesn’t change the fact that he shot himself in the foot here.
Raps and Young Cass’s Relationship Is the Same as Raps and Adult Cass’s, and That Is a Problem.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Condescending, manipulative, hypocritical, and bossy is the way Rapunzel treats everyone. She doesn’t understand the actual difference between a child and an adult. She only understands who she who she can and can’t boss  around. And those people that she can’t place under her thumb are labeled antagonists by the show.
Nor does she actually care about what either kid Lance or kid Cass has to say. She’s just being proformative, and young Cass can see through that BS, which why her methods do not work. It’s not because she’s not ‘strict’ enough; it’s because she’s not being honest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meanwhile Child Cassandra is just as combative, rude, bullying, and entitled as Adult Cassandra. In season three she regresses even further and becomes more violent than before.
Unlike Rapunzel, Cassandra wasn’t trapped in a tower for 18 years with zero human contact outside of her abuser. She escaped that fate and was raised in a loving home. That doesn’t mean that there won't be scars, but I still expect her to be more mature than her seven year old self. Just because she’s whining about not being special enough at 24 instead of screaming about the floor being lava doesn’t mean that she’s still not throwing a temper tantrum.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like I should not be seeing a replay/foreshadowing of their main conflict here. They aren’t children. They’re dynamic isn’t that of a mother and child. It’s not even a big sister looking out for a little sister type relationship. Its two immature women dragging innocent victims into their bitchy cat fight for dominance over the other.
If you want me to take their issues seriously then give them real stakes to disagree over, mature behavior that I can root for, and a resolvement that doesn’t reverse any potential development that they could have had.
Matthews Plan Makes Zero Sense
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For starters, half the group being kids isn’t enough of a reason for Rapunzel to stay at the shell house. Even if the effects of the time top became permanent, then Raps and Eugene could just leave and take the kids with them. Either to finish the road trip, or go straight back to Corona. Not that there’s any real reason to get the Dark Kingdom anyways, nor is there a ticking clock stopping Raps from trying again later if she chose to.
Rapunzel also is not obligated to become anyone’s mother. If she took them back to Corona than Cap would undoubtedly raise Cassandra all over again, and Lance and Shorty could be adopted by someone else. Any of the pub thugs might take them or even perhaps the King and Queen since they missed out on raising their actual daughter. Though for my money I’d get Monty or Xavier to take them in. They seem the most mature and both are shown to be good with kids.
Then again Rapunzel has been shown twice now to not give a damn about abandoning orphans, so even the ‘dump them at an orphanage’ or ‘leave them alone in the woods to fend for themselves’ isn’t entirely off the table either. I wish I was joking, but I’m not. Sadly, only Eugene’s love for Lance might be the one thing to stop her from doing just so, and even that’s iffy.
As for the missing door from earlier, if that was all that was stopping them from leaving then the time top shenanigans were fully unnecessary altogether.
I Actually Like Eugene and Rapunzel’s Conflict Here; I Just Wish It Was In a Better Episode.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Each of their viewpoints stem from their upbringing.
Rapunzel is unique in that she was simultaneously emotionally abused and neglected while being physically spoiled. Especially once she found out that she was princess, where she was then handed nearly anything and everything she wanted. She doesn’t recognize that getting your every possible whim come true can be damaging. Nor does she have any comprehension of what living in poverty is like and how this many toys is wasteful to someone like Eugene who had so very little and stole to survive.
She does however associate limits, boundaries, and orders with abusive behavior because she’s been denied autonomy and respect her whole life. She’s never seen what healthy parenting looks like and how rules can be applied correctly.
To Rapunzel no orders is ‘freeing’ and ‘validation’ is all that is needed to get a child to listen to you. Which doesn’t work for her because she doesn’t understand that real communication is more than just giving a compliment now and then.
Meanwhile Eugene lacked any sort of anchor at all. He was left to his own devices at a young age and had no one to rely on for emotional needs and, after leaving the orphanage, no one to provide physical needs either.
It’s telling that he and Lance latched onto Quaid as the only authority figure in their life, despite Quaid never out right adopting them. He was the only sense of stability that they had who they could trust wouldn’t hurt them, despite being strict with them.
And now that Eugene has gotten older and is reformed, he can probably understand why Quaid was so harsh on him and Lance. Quaid probably did more to try and help them turn from a life crime than even Rapunzel did. Like meeting Rapunzel was the inciting incident that inspired Eugene to make that leap, but the groundwork was already laid out for him to do so elsewhere. Things like his good communication skills, respect and empathy of others, and understanding of boundaries had to be learned from somewhere, and if not from the Sheriff of Vardaros than who?
What I’m getting at is that, while Rapunzel rejects her parents methods but then fails to break her learned habits from them anyways, Eugene is the reverse. He’s come to embrace his mentor’s teachings, but he fails to implement them correctly because he’s not Quaid. Being authoritative isn’t his strong suit. It goes against his usual nature as the easy going person that he is and so any attempts to come across as forceful fail as they’re hollow.
Kids know authenticity and genuineness when they see it. The children reject Rapunzel because she’s not being real with them, yet they also reject Eugene cause he’s not being honest with himself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s a complex and mature conflict. Neither person is fully right nor wrong, and only by learning from each other and adopting both methods can they achieve their goal.
TTS can be deep when it wants to be. There’s a good foundation here for mature themes and complex characterization. It’s just the series doesn’t ever commit to it.
Whatever personal drama going on here about two young adults trying to cope with their past traumas and how that affects their current life and future goals is completely lost in the magical goofy antics and low stakes situation. Even the stuff about Eugene and his relationship with Quaid is reduced to nothing but a one off joke rather than being genuinely explored as a point of development.
Imagine how much more powerful things would have been if Angry and Red were brought along on the trip. If this argument was over them and whether or not they should adopt the two girls themselves or consider other options. That would be something with real weight. Something with a choice that had actual consequences attached to it. Something that would permanently affect all involved parties. Something that wouldn’t make the two leads look like outright dicks for abandoning two children for a second damn time in a row.
You Have 70 Feet of Magical, Indestructible Hair! Why Are You Afraid of a Bunch of Dogs!?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You’ve fought off giant monsters, killer robots, and supernatural beings with magical powers. What do you mean you can’t hold off a pack of guard dogs while busting down a stuck door? Why is Eugene the shield for everyone and not the actual unbreakable hair that you use as a shield all the damn time? And Why did we have to rely on Shorty again to be the deus ex machina of the episode?
Tumblr media
At this point the writers should have just made him Demantius instead of the monkey.
What Happened To This New Dream? Where Did It Go In Season Three?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Most fans who do enjoy season two happen to be big New Dream fans as this is by far and away the best season for them. I’ll admit that the series, up to this point, had me actively liking them together, despite being originally lukewarm to the pairing in the movie.
Their conflicts were for the the most part mature and real. They learned from one another equally and had open communication when it didn't involve ‘marriage is a trap’ BS. Things, like compromising on differentiating future goals, honesty and communication, and making time for one another and extending effort into a relationship while being true to yourself are all relatable issues.
Even today's episode featured the topic of having kids and parenting. Which is a discussion you absolutely need to have with your prospective spouse before entering into any long term commitments and signing any legal contracts. For real, I’ve seen marriages fall apart because they didn’t agree on whether or not they wanted children.
I don’t know what went down between writing season two and season three, but things quickly took a sharp turn away from this dynamic and nosedived into a pit of uncomfortable bullying and gross sexist implications here after.
Matthews Plan Goes Against Zhan Tiri’s Plan
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah so Matthews is one of Zhan Tiri’s disciples, but he apparently doesn’t know of her goals/plans, cause she needs Rapunzel and company to reach the moonstone, not stay stuck here.
The meta reason for this that the Zhan Tiri’s story was altered at the last minute and the writers failed to make sure there was any sort of consistency between what they already set up and where they actually wound to actually taking the plot.
The in universe reason is that Zhan Tiri is an impotent moron, but that’s not what the writers were going for so it’s a fail.
Conclusion
I like the New Dream stuff, and Matthews is at least entertaining despite being incompetent. Everything else about the episode is ‘meh’ tho.

Resurrecting Demanitus
Guess what? Kitty mom got inspired! Again! By @wheredomelodiescomefrom ! This art was just too good to leave it without a background story.
Sooo... here we go again, I guess.
------
“Mine! They are finally mine!” Zhan Tiri laughed as she held both Sundrop and the Moonstone in her hands.
“No!” Rapunzel cried, running towards the demoness. Zhan Tiri side-stepped and the princess missed her, barreling into Cassandra, both women landing on the floor.
“With these I can finally resurrect Demanitus. And he will be completely under my control!” The demon laughed menacingly as her gaze moved towards the corridor. “And it turns out I have a perfect vessel right in this castle.”
She laughed one last time before disappearing. Rapunzel and Cassandra pushed themselves up, both struggling to stand straight.
“What’s… what’s going on?” Cassandra questioned, leaning over the wall for support, the princess doing the same.
“It seems taking the stones forcefully has weakened us.” Rapunzel replied, gritting her teeth and pushing herself to stand properly. She wobbled a little but managed to not fall. “We have to go after Zhan Tiri.”
“We don’t even know where she is.” Cassandra pointed out, managing to stand straight too.
“She said so herself. This ‘perfect vessel’ is somewhere in the castle.” The princess reminded her, moving towards the door. “And the only place that holds people at the moment is the throne room.”
“Why the throne room?” The dark-haired woman fell into step behind the other, her brow raised in question.
“Varian is building a portal to send Zhan Tiri back into limbo.” Rapunzel explained as they descended to the ground floor. “Hopefully, it’s ready and they will manage to use it before-”
A sound of rushed footsteps stopped them mid-walk. A group of people ran from behind the corner, led by angered Quirin, followed by Adira, Hector, Eugene, and the rest of the defenders.
“Eugene!” Rapunzel called and ran up to her boyfriend. His eyes widened at her sight.
“Sunshine, your hair-” He said in surprise.
“Zhan Tiri took the Sundrop.” She explained quickly and shot a glance at Cassandra standing not far away. “And the Moonstone. She said something about resurrecting Demanitus and finding a ‘perfect vessel’.”
“The Moonstone? That means-” Everyone now took notice of the dark-haired woman standing awkwardly several steps away. They pointed their weapons at her and she flinched and looked away.
“I… I’m not going to fight you.” Cassandra said. “Not that I have anything to fight with…”
“As much as I’d like to resolve it now, we have more important things to worry about.” Adira pointed out, her face frowned.
“Eugene, what happened?” Rapunzel looked at her boyfriend, remembering how the group rushed out from behind the corner. “Did Zhan Tiri take someone already?”
“Sunshine…” Eugene’s eyes turned into worry and he casted a glance at Quirin and the rest of the Brotherhood. He sighed and focused on the princess’ emerald orbs. “She took Varian.”
~~~~~~
Varian struggled in his binds, the chains that magically appeared around his body, tying him up with little space to move. They were completely surprised when Zhan Tiri suddenly appeared in the throne room. Before anyone could react, she grabbed the boy, the chains suddenly binding his whole body, and disappeared again, taking him with her.
They reappeared outside, in a place Varian didn’t see before but knew exactly where it was, if only the big tree growing at the edge of the cliff was any implication. Janus Point, the place considered the most magical, where the barrier between the universes was said to be the thinnest.
“Let me go!” The alchemist struggled again and yelped in pain, as the chains tightened around his body.
“Hush, child.” Zhan Tiri said, her back turned to the binded teen. “Soon, you will serve the greater goal.”
“I don’t want to serve any goal!” He shouted in response, glaring at the demon. “Whatever you’re planning, it won’t work! Rapunzel will-”
“The princess will do nothing to stop me.” Zhan Tiri cut in, turning around and smiling in a way that sent chills down the alchemist’s spine. “Not without the power of Sundrop.”
With those words, she produced two stones, the gold one held in her right hand, and the blue one in her left.
“With the combined power of both Sun and Moon, I will resurrect Demanitus, putting him completely under my command.” The demon went on, hiding the stones into her dress and closing the space between herself and Varian, bringing her hand to cup his cheek. “And you, my dear, will become his vessel.”
“N-no matter what you say, Rapunzel will save me!” Varian replied defyingly, moving his head away from the demon’s touch. “She’s too stubborn to give up.”
“Oh, I’m perfectly aware of that, dear alchemist.” Zhan Tiri said and her grin grew impossibly wide. “But soon, there will be no one for her to save.”
~~~~~~
“We can’t just rush in blindly!” Cassandra argued and Eugene sent her a death glare.
“You can’t expect me to sit still while this demon has my son!” Quirin growled back, Adira and Hector nodding their heads in agreement.
“By being Quirin’s son, he is considered part of the Brotherhood.” The white-haired woman explained. “And we don’t leave anyone behind.”
“I’m not saying we should do nothing!” Cassandra said back. “I’m only pointing out, we don’t even know where they are.”
“That’s why we need to spread out and look.” Hector growled and the dark-haired woman suppressed an annoyed growl herself.
“They can be anywhere. And searching in a way you suggest can take days!” She pointed out.
“It’s better than doing nothing!” Quirin argued.
“Guys, guys!” Eugene stepped to stand between Cassandra and the Brotherhood. “I’m sure we can figure out if we stop fighting with ourselves.”
“Why is she even here?! She should be locked out in the dungeons, or whatever this kingdom does to criminals!” Hector grumbled and Eugene let out a tired sigh.
“As Rapunzel already said, we can deal with it AFTER we save the kid.” The man reminded and shot a pleading look at his girlfriend. “Any ideas, Sunshine?”
“What about… Janus Point?” The now-brown-haired princess suggested, looking at the rest of the party. “It is considered magical. Some even say the barrier between the universes is the thinnest there.”
“And if Zhan Tiri is planning to summon Demanitus, this place could be our best bet.” Queen Arianna nodded in approval and smiled at her daughter.
“Okay, we have a plan. Can we go now?” Hector asked impatiently and Rapunzel looked at everyone gathered in the corridor, before nodding in determination.
“Let’s save Varian.” She said.
~~~~~~
Varian struggled against his binds once again. The chains surrounding his body disappeared, changing into shackles that held his wrists together over his head, and his ankles separate. Each end of the chain was secured around the branches and roots of the tree, the teen facing the end of the cliff.
“Stop struggling, boy.” Zhan Tiri huffed in annoyance as she shot a side glance at him. Once again, she produced the two stones from her dress and approached the bound alchemist.
“You won’t get away with this!” Varian cried in defiance but was ignored.
“Let us begin, shall we?” The demon grinned widely and pushed the two stones into the tree, each on one side of the tied alchemist.
The tree lit up, and a white sigil appeared on the trunk, various symbols displayed inside the circle, the sun and moon corresponding to the stones’ arrangement.
“ZHAN TIRI!!” A sudden cry sounded from behind. Varian couldn’t see from where he was tied, but the familiarity of the voice was enough to give him hope. Rapunzel was here. “Let him go!”
“A little too late for that, princess.” Zhan Tiri laughed and turned to the alchemist. “It has already started.”
The wind suddenly grew stronger and the demon grinned widely.
“Sun and Moon unite,
Listen to my plea.
Bring the one I want,
Make him obey me.” Zhan Tiri started chanting, her voice booming over the sound of wind, eyes glowing green.
Varian felt a sudden pain overwhelming his whole body. He cried out, the blood-curdling scream freezing everyone on spot.
“Varian!”
“Son!”
“Kid!”
Everyone cried at the sound, Quirin and the Brotherhood already rushing towards the demoness.
“Now, at my command
He will rise once more.
Never leave my sight
We will rule as one.
Rule as one!” The incantation finished and Zhan Tiri laughed maniacally.
Varian squirmed in his binds, screaming and yelling. If it was even possible, it sounded as if his cries grew even louder, even more desperate, even more terrifying. Over the cliff, a portal appeared, a white hue exiting it and reaching for the teen. When it touched his skin, he cried out once more, tears appearing at the corners of his eyes.
“Stop it! You’re hurting him!” Rapunzel cried, as she tried to somehow unchain the struggling teen.
“Give up, Princess!” Zhan Tiri laughed from where she was levitating several feet over the ground. “Once the process has started, there is no way to stop it!”
“There is always a way!” Eugene shouted, pointing his sword at the demoness. “And if anyone can find it, it’s Rapunzel.”
The princess smiled slightly at that and turned her face back towards the tree and the alchemist. He was still screaming, but, with horror, she noticed his voice was slowly dying out, strengths leaving him far too quickly. Her eyes shot around the sigil, looking for weak spots, anything to stop this.
Her gaze fell on the symbol of the sun, noticing the golden glow right in the middle. She shot a quick glance at the moon symbol, taking notice of the blue glow there. The Sundrop and the Moonstone. If she managed to pry them off…
She reached out her hand towards the golden stone and cried out, when the power shot through her. She retracted her arm with a pained cry, cradling it to her chest.
“Raps!” Cassandra was next to her in an instant, shooting a concerned glance at the rest of the party, trying to deal with the demon. Then, she looked back at the sigil, understanding the intentions of her friend. “Let me help. You grab the Sundrop, I’ll take the Moonstone.”
Rapunzel calmed her breathing and nodded, her face full of determination. On the count of three, the two women both grabbed one of the stones and pulled with all their might, ignoring the shots of pain the raw energy caused. The sigil blinked in and out, and Rapunzel smiled triumphantly.
“Keep going, Cass! It’s working!” She cried to the other woman and she nodded in return, teeth clenched in determination and pain.
With a last cry, the both stones simultaneously were pried off the circle, the sigil ceasing its existence and the chains binding Varian disappearing in an instance. He fell forward, slumping unconsciously to the ground.
“Varian!” Quirin cried upon noticing his son falling and ran up to him instantly. “Son, are you alright?!”
“D-dad…?” Blue eyes opened slightly, staring unseeingly at his father. “What…?”
“Shh… it’s okay. You’re safe now.” Quirin hugged his son closer and Varian leaned into the hug with a delighted sigh.
“NoOoOoOoOoOoO!” A demonic cry sounded from behind. They looked up to see furious Zhan Tiri staring at the disappearing portal, the white hue being sucked back inside. “WhAt DiD yOu dO?!”
“It’s over, Zhan Tiri!” Rapunzel cried, standing tall, the Sundrop in her hand. Cassandra stood next to her, holding the Moonstone. They shared a look and nodded their heads, staring back at the demon.
Simultaneously, they both raised a hand holding the stone towards Zhan Tiri. A gold and blue energy shot out from the stones, mixing together and hitting the demon in the chest. She shrieked and then there was an explosion. When the smoke cleared, the demoness was gone.
“Is she… gone?” Eugene was the first to speak as he looked around.
“I… I think so…” Rapunzel replied, staring at the Sundrop still in her hand. She noticed a blue glow to her right and saw Cassandra holding the Moonstone to her.
“I- you should take it, Raps.” The woman said, looking away. “I don’t- I shouldn’t have it. I’ve done enough damage already.”
Rapunzel nodded and picked up the stone, making sure she held it in the other hand. None of them wanted to risk the stones combining, seeing how they reacted just moments ago. The princess looked back at Quirin, standing up with Varian secured in his arms, the alchemist still too weak to stand on his own.
“Let’s go back to the castle.” Rapunzel decided, looking at everyone gathered. “We have much to discuss.”
Make Wise Choices Part 6: Soup and fever
Arriving at the Danvers’s apartment Alex parks the SUV, killed the engine and looks into the rear-view mirror to check on y/n. The youngest Danvers is completely passed out slightly snoring cuddle to the blonde doctor. The doctor in turn is looking down at the young woman in her arms mesmerized by the view of rosy cheeks and pouty lips.  Alex just smiles at the both of them, they do look cute together.
Kara: “Oh my God isn’t she the cutest, it just makes you want to grab her checks and squish them, so freaking adorable” – the blonde superhero says gushing about her sister.
Dr. Sharpe: “She is very beautiful indeed; she does look quite adorable while sleeping. But I am a bit concern about how rosy her cheeks are looking, and she feels too warm”
Alex opens the door for Cassandra so she can get out, but the sound of the door and the moving of the arms makes y/n a bit fussy.
The eldest Danvers touches y/n cheeks and forehead to check for a fever and hums – “she is a bit warm, but nothing too concerning. She tends to suffer from mild fevers due to stress or when overtired. But let’s get her up and I will check her temp in the apartment, I think it’s for the cold she is coming down with”
y/n moves and puts an arm around the doctor’s neck and hides her face, clearly not happy at the women disrupting her sleep.
Y/n: “ghnooo, comfy don’t move”. - you complain.
Kara: “Yes, she is quite the cuddler. Especially when tired or sick. Want me to help you with her? She is mainly dead weight by now. She won’t cooperate with you when she is like this”.
Dr. Sharpe: “that’s fine I don’t mind, and she is not really heavy. Quite the opposite. I can take her upstairs. And don’t take it this the wrong way, but I’m fairly certain I’m a bit sturdier than you”- she blonde doctor gives a chuckle.
Kara: “Okaaaay then. Don’t say I didn’t warn you though. And I bet you are, but I’m used to carry around this goober since she was like 5”
Alex: “yeah she is very clingy especially with Kara., but it’s true she is now mainly dead weight”
Lena- “She won’t drop her, that woman is pure muscle. She has like 5 black belts in all sorts of martial arts and I have the feeling she is a ninja, but I don’t have further evidence to prove that”- the green- eyed woman says and chuckles.
The blonde doctor laughs at this - “I do a lot of heavy lifting and truly I don’t mind. “- says while stepping out of the car with y/n in her arms like she weights nothing at all.  Then turn at her friend -“And hey then if you say all those nice things about me why you asked if I had her, you were worried I would drop her back at the office “ - the woman accuses her friend but with an amuse smile on her face
Lena: “I knew you had her; I was double checking. I’m just too fond of y/n and I worry, so sue me!”
Kara: “yeah right Lena, y/n has you wrapped around her finger sooo bad”
Alex: “please, you’re one to talk”-mocks her sister.
The women entered the apartment and Cassandra went to the living room to place Y/n at the couch
Dr. Sharpe: “Should I lay her here or in her room?”
Alex: “The couch Is fine, I want to check her temp and wake her for a little bit, she hasn’t eaten anything if I want to give her something for the cold and she needs something to eat. I don’t want her glucose levels to drop”
Dr. Sharpe: “Is she a diabetic?”
Alex: “No, she’s not. but when she was younger, she struggled with nondiabetic hypoglycemia. It was due to the medication she was taken at the time. We kind of get used to always check she was under the normal levels and she gets cranky, dizzy and sometimes gets horrible headaches if she doesn’t eat and her blood sugar gets low. I don’t want her feeling worse, right now I think she had enough with the teeth surgery and now probably getting sick with a cold”
Dr. Sharpe: “Oh I see. We definitely don’t want that, poor baby”- the doctor looks down at you with a sweet smile”
Alex: “now, here comes the fun part. She doesn’t like being waken up when she is sick.”- the red head looks down sadly at y/n
Kara: “what’s even worse is that you are going to feed her something gross like broccoli. She hates veggies by the way…” the blonde Danvers mentions with a grimace at thinking of vegetables.
Lena: “there’s nothing wrong with broccoli. You two are just picky eaters who enjoy junk food way too much”.
Kara: “you should see when trying to feed her veggies. She is the worst there is. Is always a negotiation strategy. And Lena is the one that handles that , when Alex and y/n fight over veggies always ends with y/n in tears.”
Dr. Sharpe: “Wait… how about you let  me cook dinner . I make a really nice creamy chicken noodle soup with mushrooms that can be perfect for her to eat and for us too. Healthy and comforting. My nonna used to make it for me”
Lena: “ohhh yes, that sounds delicious “
Alex: “that actually sounds amazing. And Lena has all the healthy stuff in the fridge so I bet all ingredients you need you can find here”
Kara; “I would never say no to food, especially if made by an Italian woman”
Dr. Sharpe, “ok so I’m going to start on diner, while you check on y/n. When diner is done you can wake her up and feed her and she can take her meds”
 Y/n: “Lexie?” - You mumble asking for your big sis, you only call her Lexie when you feel unwell.
 Alex: “I’m here baby”.- running her fingers through your hair soothingly
Y/n; “Lexie am cold” - a tear runs down your rosy cheek.
Alex: “oh sweet girl; you’re not felling okay aren’t you? Ok, change of plans, Sharpe you go ahead and continue with the diner prep, Kara can you bring a set of lighter set of pajamas for y/n. I don’t want her overheated.  Now baby I’m going to check your temperature and give you some juice or Pedialyte while diner is ready”
Kara: “On it!”
Lena: “come one Cassie, I’ll help you with diner”- the blonde doctor and Lena walk to the kitchen.
Alex: “Here, let me take your temp baby”. - the red head puts the thermometer in your ear and waits for the beep “100.5, that’s a fever but not too bad, let get you into more comfortable jammies and I will bring a light sheet. I can’t bring the blanket baby; you will get too warm and would bring your temp up”
Y/n; “hold me please “- a couple tears run down your cheeks, tears of exhaustion.
Alex: “ok let me change you into fresh jammies and I will hold you before diner. Lena can you bring me a cold compress for y/n. Let see if that can bring the fever down a bit. I don’t want to medicate her just yet”
Alex and Kara work fast on changing your clothes while Lena returns with the cold compress. Alex sits down and Kara picks you up and settles you in Alex lap. While Lena presses the cold compress on your forehead and passes one of the bottles filled with cold grape Pedialyte.
Alex: “Ok sweetie, here drink some Pedialyte, diner should be ready soon”. – and starts to hum softly a tune.
Lena returns to the Kitchen where the blonde doctor is working on getting the soup cooked.
Dr Sharpe : “is she okay?”
Lena; “mild fever, but she seems like she settled down okay now that she is with Alex. She tends to be more clingy to Kara but when she really feels bad , when she is too exhausted or sick, she always wants Alex near her. She is her big sister after all”
Kara; “yeah, Alex has always been our rock since we were kids. Like pretty much raise us , I mean our mom Eliza is the best but she was always busy when we were younger and after Jeremahia took a job that kept him away most of the time,   Alex was always more like a parent figure to us, especially to y/n. I didn’t get sick often, but y/n unfortunately wasn’t as lucky. Her immune system wasn’t the best. Y/n would never calm down if Alex was not with her to rock her to sleep. Over the years she became more and more comfortable with me, but when I first moved into the Danvers home y/n would only let Alex hold her when she was very sick. Not even Eliza was able to calm her down.”
The three women look back the at couch where Alex was still humming softly a tune to y/n. still awake but clearly not very aware of much.
Dr. Sharpe: “ok diner should be ready in about 10 minutes.”
Kara works on setting up the table with Lena. While the blonde doctor starts plating the soup for everyone.
Once everything was settled, the blue-eyed doctor walks into the living room to let Alex knows diner is ready.
Dr. Sharpe: “Diner’s ready, you want me to bring her soup here or to the table?”
Alex: “I think the table. She will fall asleep if she is not sitting down or make a mess instead of eating anything. Come on sweetie, wake up for a little bit diner is ready”- she tries to coax you into a more conscious state.
Y/n: “No wanna. Not hungry”- and you try to settle more comfortably on your sister to fall asleep.
Alex: “None of that. come on, Cassandra made her special soup just for you and you need to eat something”
y/n: “She did? For me?” – tearing up a bit and cover a sneeze with the inside of your elbow- “Ok, I guess I can eat something” - you look to the blonde woman who is smiling kindly at you.
Alex: “why the tears baby? – Alex touches your forehead- “Oh baby you feel warmer. Come one lets get you food and then your meds”
Alex walks you to the table where Kara and Lena are waiting and began to eat. Alex begins to feed you the soup which is very tasty.
y/n: “this taste so good, Thank you Cassandra”
Kara: “Oh wow yes its amazing. So yummy”- while pretty much eaten her soup a long with a huge piece of garlic bread in her mouth.
Alex: “Kara maybe you should try to savor it first, you just inhale the whole thing”
Kara: “Ha Ha very funny Alex”
Lena: “Well it is quite delicious. Thank You Cassie.”
Dr. Sharpe: “Well you are all very welcome, I’m glad you liked it. I can always cook more dishes for you, I really love cooking”
Kara: “You will never hear me complaining about food, so by all means you can feed me anytime. This is sooooo good.”
Pleasant chatter among the women at the table continues while Alex works on feeding you the soup, but you only manage half the bowl as you grow too tire and you just want to sleep.
y/n: “I can’t eat anymore Alex, I’m so sleepy”- you look pleadingly to your sister.
Alex: “Ok Kiddo, you ate enough so I can give you the meds, lets get you to bed”
Kara: “Let me take her, you finish your soup. When you’re done you can come to check on her”
Dr. Sharpe: “Yes Alex, you haven’t eaten, I can give her the meds, I’m guessing the cold medicine with the fever reducer, right?”
Alex: “Yes, the ones in the coffee table. And thank you I’ll be right there”
Kara walks to where you’re sitting at the table and take you to your room.
Kara: “Come here sweetie”
You just let yourself be carried away to your room while the blonde doctor picks up her medical bag and the meds on the coffee table.
Kara sits you in your bed while she goes back to bring a glass of water.
Dr. Sharpe: “Hi sweetie, let me take your temp really quick, you are looking quite flush right now”
y/n: “Well I think is mainly your fault, just so you know” – you reply with a hint of flirt behind the words
Dr. Sharpe: “funny girl, may that be the case, just humor me. I don’t like take advantage of sick and delirious women while their inhibitions are low”
y/n: “You can totally take advantage of me”- you try to wink and wiggle your eyebrows, but you are feeling all groggy, so you look like dork with no sense of coordination.
Dr. Sharpe: “well that’s cute, you ‘cute. And all in due time pretty girl”- The blonde woman pokes your nose.  And you just pout at her.
Kara: “Ohhhh look at that, the pouting. What you did?”
Dr. Sharpe: “I just want to check her temp; her face looks a bit too flush”
Kara looks at you and nods. “Lay back kiddo and let the doc check your temp”- you comply resting your back into the pillows while the blonde doctor works on checking the surgical foam in your mouth and your temp.
Dr. Sharpe: “You do have a fever pretty girl. The foam for your teeth seems okay and you shouldn’t feel any pain”
Alex walks into the room at the moment the doctor speaks and frowns at the mention of the high temperature.
Alex: “Ok yes, that’s higher than before. Ok here baby, please drink this and lay down.”
Lena walks into the room carrying a bowl with cold water and a few rags. “Here Alex, I brought a few cold compresses to try and bring her temperature down a bit”
Alex handles you a tiny cup with cold medicine and fever reduced. You take it and lay yourself down. Lena and Kara say their goodbye and good night to you.
Dr. Sharpe: “Get well soon pretty girl, sleep tight and rest bella”
y/n: “Will you come to visit soon? I kinda like the idea of the date thing you mentioned before.”
The Danvers and Lena chuckle at that while the blond only looks a bit taken aback but still pleased that the littlest Danvers wants to see her again.
Dr. Sharpe: “You were listening huh? I can definitely arrange to that, however you need to get well first sweet thing” -The doctor places a gentle kiss to your forehead – “sweet dreams”
Y/n: “Thank you” – you yawn and began to close your eyes.
Dr. Sharpe: “Ok I’m leaving now, I’ll see myself out, talk to you later Alex and call me if you need anything”
Alex nods and says good night to the doctor while the blonde doctor walks back to the living room to say goodbye to Lena and the Kara.
Alex: “Okay sweet girl, I’m going to change and get my phone and I’ll stay with you tonight, okay?”
You just nod and close your eyes succumbing to sleep.
You wake up and the room is dark, you can feel a body next to you, but you feel too hot and remove your sheets from you. But the moment you do, you feel cold. You whimper because you feel miserable.
Alex senses you are moving around and turn on the lights to check on you. She looks down at you and notices your red cheeks and sweaty locks. Puts a hand on your cheeks and forehead.
Alex: “Oh sweet girl, you fever got worse let me check”- she quickly checks your temp, 103. “this is not good, come one we need to bring your temperature down”
Alex runs to the bathroom and fills the bathtub with barely lukewarm water and returns to your room to take you to the bathroom. You cling to her trying to get war again after you start to shiver from the cold from the temperature change. Alex removes your clothes and sits you in the bathtub.
You have a few tears down your face and whimper at the cold of the water.  In that moment Kara walks into the bathroom.
Kara: “Oh no, fever got worse?” and sits next to Alex while she pours water down your back, neck and front. After a while Alex notices that your temp is down, and Kara works on getting you up and bundle up in a soft towel and brings you back to your room. There they put in a loose shirt and clean underwear but leave you just on that to avoid overheating you. You feel cooler to the touch and Alex brings more medicine.
Alex: “Okay, open up kiddo” – you take the medicine and try to find a comfy spot.
Kara lays down next to you as well as Alex, who touches your arm no wanting to get your body heat up. But still for you to feel comforted by their presence. You can feel a cool rag on your forehead and the soothing voice of Kara signing softly a song and you drift off once again.
note: Sorry not my best and honestly not quite happy with this. not feeling it, i don't have that much inspiration. I’ll get it better for Part 7.
The Real Mindtrap
Requested by @silentwriter28
Warning for some violence
I kind of went a little crazy with this. What was supposed to be around 2,000 words turned into over 9,000. There were just so many aspects of Quirin and Varian’s relationship that I wanted to explore. Please enjoy!
________________________________________________________________
                                             The Real MindTrap
Varian gasped upon hearing the shouts of panic coming from the opposite side of the vast throne room. I wasn’t even gone that long! He thought, as frustration ticked like a clock inside his brain. “I’ll be right back!” He hurriedly, yet gently, said to his father, who was lying peacefully still. After Varian’s stunning mechanism had overcharged Quirin’s mind into unconsciousness, the young alchemist had situated his father comfortably in the corner of the throne room. I should have known something like this would happen! It was so foolish for me to leave that machine unsupervised. Varian bit his lip in fear as he sprinted towards the chaotic screams. I bet it was Lance; he never listens to my warnings! He knew he was an over-the-top organizing freak, but he had better reason then most to be an insufferable “safety first” individual. He had had “accidents” in the past with unforgettable consequences. Even though he had moved on and the world seemed to forgive him, he still suffered from chilling nightmares and random panic attacks. Most of these he managed to keep hidden from his friends, but they still lingered in the back of his mind. He could see it in his shadow, like a ghost haunting him.
Still, he couldn’t afford a mistake right now!
Zhan Tiri wasn’t going to mess up, so he couldn’t either. He couldn’t let anyone down. Not again.
By the time Varian’s short legs had reached the opposite side of the throne room, the bright colors had vanished inside the portal to Limbo. “Lance?” The alchemist breathlessly asked for his friend who was no where in sight. Suddenly, a deep weight slammed down inside his chest as dread threatened to crush him to the floor. “No, no, no, no.” He chanted softly to himself hoping that his voice would keep him grounded in reality. “This isn’t happening!” Reaching the machine, Varian actively scaned the massive portal desperately searching for an explanation.
That’s when he saw it.
The lever. It had been moved. Subconsciously, the young alchemist swallowed a nervous gulp of air. Gone, they’re all gone. I can’t mess this up. No! I won’t mess this up. I can get them back. Unfortunately, Varian had been short on time and had only focused on how to get the warlock into the portal, not on how to get anyone out.
Without Ruddiger’s presence to steady the alchemist, he felt a deep, hollow pit form in his stomach. Determination prickled his brow as he dropped to his knees. All of Corona was in an alternate dimension, and he was the only person who could fix this. Tightening his fingers around a wrench to the point that his knuckles turned white underneath his gloves, Varian took a controlled breath before getting to work.
He wasn’t sure if pulling the lever would get them out in one piece. It was also possible that instead of freeing the people of Corona, he would be sucked in the portal, leaving their situation completely hopeless. He had to figure this out. With his free hand, Varian reached for the Demantis plans.
After studying and comparing his work with the instructions (or rather guidelines) Varian’s clever mind put the pieces of the puzzle together. It was possible to reverse the portal. It wouldn’t be easy, but he could do it.
Immediately diving into his work, Varian became submerged in his tweaking and tinkering. In other words, he didn’t notice the ferocious warrior creeping up behind him. It wasn’t until his shadow loomed over the small scientist, that he noticed the man. Whirling around just in time to dodge an outstretched arm, Varian dove out of Hector’s reach before scrambling to his feet and clutching the wrench as if it were his lifeline.
Why didn’t I bring my combat belt? Varian was furious with himself. How had he been so unprepared?!? He was fighting for all of Corona and instead of bringing his alchemical weapons and potions, he relied on everyone else to keep him safe. He should have prepared for the worse. Now, he was going to pay the price.
After slapping himself mentally for this unreadiness, he dashed away from his work. All would be lost if Hector damaged the portal. Leading the brainwashed warrior away from the valuable machine, Varian sprinted to the other side of the throne room. Maybe, just maybe his father would be in an able condition to help him; however, when he reached the corner, the blankets that were laid out for Quirin were empty.
Oh no! After the shock of his father’s disappearance settled, Varian noticed that he was slowly being backed into a wall.
Hector was trapping him!
Varian knew that any attempt to talk Hector out of attacking him would be useless. He hadn’t known that the Brotherhood even existed until a few months ago. In fact, the only thing Varian knew about Hector - other than him being part of the secretive Brotherhood - was his name.
Despite his lack of knowledge, Varian found himself speaking. His options were shrinking and becoming more hopeless with every passing moment. Perhaps speaking up would buy him some time. Every second was vital to the brilliant alchemist. He just needed to come up with an idea and quick! “Mr. Hector, please! You fought with my dad. He’s fond of you; he wouldn’t want you to hurt me!”
The unnaturally blue-eyed man slightly hesitated before speaking, briefly halting his steps. “So, you’re Varian?” It was more of a statement rather than a question. Varian hadn’t noticed the hint of surprise in Hector’s facial expression until it had straightened into one of indifference. Within seconds, the warrior had returned his menacingly brisk pace towards the boy.
Luckily for Varian, his sharp mind had come up with a plan. Before his back could be pressed against the wall, the young alchemist rushed to one of the tapestries that was majestically hung up, ripped it from it’s decorative position, and managed to throw it over Hector at the correct angle, wrapping him in it. While the warrior was thrashing under the ginormous tapestry, Varian made a run for it.
Eugene, where are you? The distressed alchemist knew that he had to find the former thief. If the brainwashed warrior could be distracted just long enough for Varian to reverse the portal, they might still stand a chance in this fight. Rapunzel was undoubtably searching for Cassandra that meant the only reason Eugene wouldn’t return soon was if Zhan Tiri…
Varian didn’t want to think about it.
The alchemist was charging towards the throne room’s exit. Maximus was guarding outside. He just had to get to the door. He was so close.
Four more steps.
Three.
Two.
One–
Varian’s gloved hand hovered over the handle before being violently pulled back. Expecting to see Hector’s maniacally face, the alchemist swung the wrench directly at the figure. Of course, his untrained muscles were no match for the burly hands, which gripped the tool easily, yanking it out of his grasp. Before Varian could get a good look at the attacker, he felt a sturdy knee slam into his gut. Doubling over as an unexpected pain overcame his abdomen, the boy urgently fought to regain air in his lungs but found it incredibly difficult to do so. When the boy raised his head, his vision was slightly blurry. Assuming that he must have been hit harder than he realized, Varian could have sworn that Hector looked identical to his father.
Wait.
“Dad...?” There was so much hurt and anguish in the small, squeaky voice.
Quirin looked emotionlessly at his son as he dropped the tiny body, allowing it to crumble to the floor. The broad-shouldered man was no longer wearing his helmet. His genuine brown eyes had transformed into a spine-chilling, light blue. The bright color was abnormal. Varian couldn’t fight the wetness circulating in his eyes. He wasn’t sure if it was the fierce aching in his lungs or the shock of seeing that his father had caused it.
“Please, Dad, I know you’re in th-” A strong kick to the face interrupted the boy’s pleas. Everything was moving so quickly. Too quickly. Before Varian knew it, his father had gripped him behind the collar and dragged him effortlessly away from the door.
Even though the injured genius was overwhelmed, he knew one thing: Maximus was outside the throne room door. “Max, help!”
That’s all the young alchemist needed to do to alert the calvary.
Varian’s head was pounding, and his peripheral vision was fuzzy. The sweet comfort of sleep was edging into his vision. I ha- have to st-ay a-awake-
A black blanket smothered the young alchemist who had suddenly become tired. Unable to prevent the darkness that flooded into his brain, Varian slumped against his father’s rough hand. Dropping into a numb state, the last thing he heard was a piercing sound of a door opening and a vicious neigh that resembled a battle cry.
*****
Varian couldn’t stop gripping his hair and pulling it until it hurt his head. He had to find some sort of relief from the emotional pain overwhelming him. It was too much. Throughout the entirety of his time in prison, Varian secretly feared what would happen if he did free his father. He would have to tell him everything that happened. More precisely, what he had done. Would his father forgive him just like the princess had?
No. He’s too strict. Varian had guessed. It was so difficult to breath. His short, shallow inhales were becoming more and more difficult to control. I can’t do this. The young alchemist chanted like a mantra in his mind. Rapunzel had graciously offered to stay with him as he told his father, but Varian explained that he had to do this himself. “Dad might feel pressured to side with me if you’re here, and I need to know his honest answer. No matter how painful it is.”
Hardly able to believe it, Varian stared at his father who was now free from his amber prison. They were sitting at their dinning room table. There was a flickering candle at the center of the wooden surface, which instead of being comforting, added to Varian’s anxiety. It was a dark night. After everyone celebrated Princess Rapunzel’s return that day, Varian and Quirin had returned to their home in Old Corona.
It was a mess. Quirin had so many question, most of them being sparked by the aftermath of the Battle of Old Corona, which had not been cleaned up yet; however, he had impressive self-control and had promised to wait till that night to ask Varian his questions. His son deserved one enjoyable day.
But that day was over now, and the two were sitting across from each other, holding mugs with hot coco, which Ruddiger had made. Quirin wanted to know why their home and all of Old Corona seemed to be deserted and left to rot. If Varian wasn’t living at the house, then where had he been staying for the last seven months? Several things were not adding up, and Quirin found his vigilant calmness to spike with anticipation. It wasn’t helping that his son was insufferably stalling to explain anything.
Quirin loved his son - but right now - he was annoying him to no end.
Something very important had happened, and he needed to know.
“So, I guess I should start at the beginning, huh?” Varian’s voice was cracking more than usual.
Quirin nodded in response, avoiding any interruptions as he knew his son would eagerly welcome them and go off topic.
“About seven months ago, during the blizzard, I asked the princess for help.” The tense boy took a moment to slow his breathing before continuing. “Corona was in a state of emergency, and - long story short - she was unable to help me.”
Quirin had expected that. Their family was beneath the royals. Even though the princess had seemingly befriended his son, it wasn’t her priority nor her duty to personally help them over the kingdom.
But, of course, fourteen-year-old Varian didn’t understand that at the time. To him, a promise was a promise.
“The thing was,” His son continued, holding his mug to hide his shaking hands, “I was desperate and the guards mistook me for attac- I mean, I was wasting the princess’s precious time during the middle of a crisis. So, they dragged me, well not exactly, they brought me out of the castle and left me in the snow.”
Quirin knew his son. When you only lived with one person it was natural to be overly observant and memorize each of their tics and fidgets, so it wasn’t very hard for Quirin to realize that his son was lying to him. “Varian.” It was a warning. Tell me the truth. His brown eyes commanded.
“Uh, well they didn’t ‘bring’ me out of the castle. They kinda, sorta dragged me out against my will and threw me into the blizzard.”
Quirin nodded, his face remaining stern.
Varian felt like he could throw up. His father’s expressions and hardness weren’t making this any easier. “Everyone was evacuating, but I came home. When I got there you- you were-” Varian choked. Hoping to hide how upset it was to relive these memories, he brought the hot coco to his lips.
Watching his son’s attempt to seem unbothered by the whole matter would have been comical if it was a different situation, but Quirin found himself becoming more impatient by the minute. He was struggling to feel empathy for his son, mainly because he didn’t know what was wrong. Despite these feelings, Quirin couldn’t help but be overwhelmed with concern.
After placing the mug on the table, Varian found it impossible to stare at his father as he continued, “I was broken when I found you like that.” His voice was so soft it held an eerie ghostliness to it. “I was so upset, but it’s hard to explain. My sorrow turned into this– anger.”
Something about the way he said the final word caused Quirin to sit up straighter.
“Dad, it was so- so- I don’t know. I’ve never felt anything like this before. I couldn’t stop it. I was furious with myself and the princess for turning her back on me. I wanted to make her pay for abandoning me.” The boy’s blue eyes were glossy as he sunk into his nightmarish memories becoming detached from reality. It was as if he had forgotten his father’s presence. “It wasn’t that she didn’t stick to her word that made me so mad. It was because she left me. She didn’t check on me! It was like she didn’t care! Maybe I’m a fool for trusting her again, but I was so tired of being everyone’s enemy!”
“Son, slow down!” Quirin had to put a stop to Varian’s indecipherable train of thought.
“Sorry.” The boy felt tears prickle in his eyes, but he fought to push them back. No! He wouldn’t cry. He needed to be strong. “Rapunzel left me by myself for an entire month! During that time alone, I- I-” There was a slight pause before his shaky voice finished, “Something in me snapped. I was so desperate to save you. So desperate not to lose you! I couldn’t! Because it would be my fault! And I couldn’t live with myself if-” This time, the young alchemist was incapable of continuing as an unexpected sob escaped his throat. It was odd that he was crying and yet no tears fluttered in his eyes.
Quirin didn’t know what to do as he watched his son cave in on himself. The boy was obviously traumatized, but he didn’t know how to comfort him. The tough man never understood the importance of physical touch. Whenever one of the members of the Brotherhood was upset, he would stay with them. Sometimes the warrior would vent to him, and other times they simply needed someone else’s presence to know that they weren’t alone.
But this was different.
This was a fifteen-year-old child who’s hurt went far deeper than some mature fighter. He was inexperienced to this kind of pain and loneliness. The boy had no one for God knows how long! How was he supposed to help his son in this situation? Quirin decided on staying silent. He didn’t want to do anything to make Varian worse, so doing nothing and just allowing his presence to calm the boy was the best he could do.
Upon noticing the stiff man’s reaction, Ruddiger lowered his tail in concern before scampering to his boy. Climbing up the chair with ease, the raccon nuzzled his head into Varian’s chest and let out a soft, heartening chitter as if to say, “It’s okay. I’m here.”
Somehow the raccoon had given the alchemist just enough strength to keep going. “I had never felt so alone before. A rumor that I had attacked the princess had spread throughout Corona. Of course, there was no proof, but that didn’t stop anyone from throwing rocks at me whenever I showed my face in public. I knew I had to take matters into my own hands because no help was coming, so I did something really, really bad.” Varian’s hands began to tremble against the mug, so he dropped them into his lap, hiding them in Ruddiger’s consoling fur. “I tricked Rapunzel into committing treason, stole the Sundrop flower, and drugged the entire castle’s staff. My experiments on the Sundrop flower were illegal and unsuccessful.” The young alchemist rushed through his words, hoping to get it over with. Guilt repeatedly stabbed his stomach, and he kept his eyes firmly on Ruddiger’s reassuring one’s, not daring to look at his father.
He could already imagine the disappointment on his face.
Instead, Quirin’s lips parted as he suddenly lost control of his facial muscles. He knew something bad had happened, but nothing near as drastic as this! Despite his desire to the opposite, he kept himself from asking questions or reprimanding the boy. Something inside of him suspected (and feared) that the worst was yet to come.
“After being announced as an enemy of the king, I found out that the power I needed to free you was inside of Rapunzel. The only way that I could possibly get to use her hair, was to do it forcefully. I- I convinced myself that since everyone saw me as the ‘bad guy,’ I had to play the part. I turned Ruddiger into a monster, tricked the kingdom into thinking I wanted to harm them, and-” The next words would have caused Quirin to yell at his son if it wasn’t for the obvious suffering and regret lingering in the boy’s voice. “I kidnapped the queen.”
It took all of Quirin’s willpower to contain his emotions and let his son finish.
“I used her to lure Rapunzel to my lab. Then, I made these ancient robots, called automatons, to fight the people of Corona.”
As the boy painstakingly continued his story, Quirin somehow knew certain things Varian said, he had never told to anyone before. Things like how he was frightened of the king, so he continued to mock him and pretend to be someone else in order to feel more comfortable in his skin. It was easier to do bad things when you were posing to be someone else. Things like how emotionless he felt as he watched the amber hungrily reach its nasty fingers towards the queen, and how disturbed he was by his own heartlessness. Things like how his rage and bitterness towards Rapunzel was simply a way of coping with how much he hated himself.
Varian was disgusted with his actions and that guilt was eating him from the inside out.
“I was in prison for six months while the princess was away.” Abruptly, the alchemist stopped speaking as if wondering if he should tell his father what happened during that time.
Quirin tried to get more information out of his son, but it was like trying to climb up a slide. Eventually, he gave up.
“Let’s just say,” Varian clutched his raccoon closely to his chest, “Let’s just say, if it wasn’t for Ruddiger, I don’t think I would be here.”
While Varian explained his mistake about opening up to Andrew, Quirin noticed that neither of them had hardly drank any of their hot coco. Both drinks were cold by now, and the candle between them had lowered a great deal. The starlight night dragged on and a certain coldness settled in.
This wasn’t the first time, Quirin felt detached from his son. They never shared a strong connection, but they pretended that they had a solid bond – or at least Quirin thought they had pretended. He never knew how much Varian adored him.
Varian was such an unusual child, and Quirin privately resented him for it. The boy was always different and was nothing like the respectable village leader. Quirin knew he wasn’t father material, but his wife had wanted a child more than anything. Naturally, he thought he could do this with her by his side.
But when she died–
It was just father and son.
It was perfect versus eccentric.
It was stern versus chaotic.
It was safety versus danger.
It was father versus son.
           Quirin’s greatest fear had come true. He was a successful leader, an incredible role model, but a failure of a father. He had let Varian down. He had led his son astray.
He had to fix this!
           “I- I thought if I could make them forget everything, then they would forgive me. But of course, it’s not that easy.” Varian still had not looked up at his father.
“You wanted forgiveness.” Quirin said more to himself than to his son.
At his father’s voice, the alchemist cautiously peaked up, “Yeah, revenge doesn’t quite have the desired effect like most people thought.”
“Who’s ‘most people?’”
“The- the other pri-prisoners.”
“Oh.” That was all he could bring himself to say. He could sense that questioning his son made him more nervous (if the stuttering was any indication) but there were so many questions he was yearning to ask. Still, he had to wait patiently. The story was nearing its end.
Once Varian explained the prison break, Rapunzel’s return, and the Seporian’s betrayal, he noticed his father for the first time. It was like a war was going on inside the brawny man. It was Quirin’s turn to avoid eye contact now.
The man’s thoughts were preoccupied with the exact moment when he was freed from the amber. Quirin was proud that Varian had found a way to save him at the time, but now that he knew the entire story, was he really proud? The truth: no. His son had a long way to go to make up for his mistakes and actions, but he couldn’t stand by and watch his son take on this journey alone. No. It was high time that he played an active role in his son’s life. Quirin wasn’t proud of himself. He had failed his family. In fact, he was one of the many reasons that had led to his Varian’s fall. The road ahead would be far from smooth and would tread deep into Varian’s scars, more than likely adding salt to some of his wounds. Things would get worse before they would get better.
But they would get better.
“Varian, we need to promise to each other, right here, right now, that we will not keep secrets from one another. We need to be on the same page because what’s coming isn’t going to be easy. I’ve made mistakes in my life Varian. Some I haven’t told you about and some I haven’t admitted to anyone – even myself. That changes today. No more secrets from either of us. Deal?”
“Deal.”
They would do this together. As a team.
*****
An excruciating pain ripped Varian out of his unconscious state like a page being torn from a library book. The second light entered his sensitive, baby blue eyes, the boy tried to raise his hand to shade his face but found that his wrists wouldn’t budge. Turning around, Varian’s eyes widened when he noticed that his wrists were mercilessly wrapped in a rope, which was irritating his skin. Where am I? The young alchemist urgently strived to regain his thoughts. Wherever he was, it was still in the castle because the rocks were still decorating the floors and walls, sticking their indestructible, black fangs into the building. His face stung where he had been kicked previously. Groaning at the nausea swirling in his stomach, Varian bit his lip in an attempt to keep the sickness at bay.
There was a faint sound of footsteps coming down the hall. The alchemist twisted his arms in a weak effort to escape but found that it was hopeless to break free of the secure bonds. The door swung open with such force that the air whistled. “Dad.” There was a certain trepidation to his tone – almost like he had suspected who the figure would be but was still heartbroken at the reveal. “Dad, please this isn’t you!”
It was like Quirin couldn’t hear him. With daunting brutality, the larger man advanced purposefully towards his son who he appeared unable to recognize. Roughly and heartlessly, he hauled Varian to his feet. The boy would have fallen back down if it had not been for the sturdy, yet cruel, support of his father. The alchemist’s shaky legs wobbled on the ground as the room continued to spin. Violently pushing the boy in front of him, Quirin remained silent.
“Dad, please. We’re supposed to be a team. We made a deal to always support each other. You don’t want to do this!”
Apparently, speaking wasn’t allowed as Quirin slammed his knee into his son’s rib cage. Varian fell to the ground, vomiting what was left in his stomach. Nausea overwhelmed his entire being and his conflicted emotions exhausted the boy. “Help me–” He whispered before falling into darkness.
*****
Quirin whistled as he pushed a wheelbarrow that contained juicy, freshly picked apples. Smiling from ear to ear, the leader of Old Corona greeted the villagers he passed, knowing each and every one of their names. Old Corona was still in the process of being repaired, but everyone’s enthusiasm to remake their homes spread a contagious joy. Even Varian had helped Quirin during this time.
Trying to relate to his son, Quirin had asked, “Do you have any inventions that could help?”
“Yes, but I think I’ll just do it by hand. I don’t think I can afford another accident.” Had been the answer. “Besides, you can never be too careful.”
Understanding his son’s overcautiousness, he decided not to push the matter, instead he enjoyed the grueling hours of work the two had done together.
Quirin was a quick learner. People knew he was a good man; however, they often overlooked his intelligence. Yes, in comparison to his son he wasn’t anything special, but compared to the average person, he had an impressive sharpness to him. It didn’t take long for the man to realize that leaving his son alone, was not an option. It wasn’t that the boy couldn’t be trusted by himself; it was the villagers couldn’t be trusted around the unprotected boy.
It seemed after several months of trying to redeem himself, the people of Corona were rigid in their acidity towards the alchemist. Forgiveness wasn’t an easy thing, especially for people who thought he was fully in the wrong.
There were several occasions that Quirin had found his son crying in secret. Varian struggled to share his emotions. It was clear to his father how desperate Varian was to seem fine with everyone’s rude comments towards him, but sometimes it was too much for the young child. He was his worst critic and having everyone else never give him a break–
Quirin sighed. His son deserved better than this.
Luckily, Rapunzel was helping him. The only time Varian ever left the house on his own was when Rapunzel would come by and convince him to. The first time Varian had left, he came back with exciting stories about a cursed treasure, friendly competitiveness, and a new friend. Quirin was overjoyed to learn that Xavier and Varian had warmed up to each other. Since that day, Varian would occasionally visit the blacksmith, always returning with a smile and with new invigorating tales to tell.
It was good to see his son have a chance to be a kid.
There was another time when Rapunzel invited Ruddiger and him to help two young girls reform. Kiera and Catalina were thrilled to have an ex-convict help them finish their last step on their journey to redemption. Of course, they ridiculed him in a joking manner, but by the end, Varian found himself becoming quite fond of the two girls. They had done wrong too and were trying to turn their lives around just like him. He was in so much deeper, but he still enjoyed helping someone else. When Varian returned, he was obviously touched by the whole endeavor; unfortunately, it had brought several unsettling memories to the front of his mind.
Despite seeming refreshed by his adventure, he had woken up in the middle of the night screaming.
Quirin’s heart broke upon seeing his son’s frantic movements, his shivering, and his hands clinging to Ruddiger as if he were an infant and the raccoon his mother. Sitting on the side of the bed, Quirin watched as his son trembled with sobs. He wanted to help him but had no idea how. The two sat silently using each other’s company to comfort one another. After the weeping had stopped and turned into dry heaves, Quirin gingerly asked, “Do you want to talk about it?”
The boy shook his head, “I thi- think I’ll just go back to sleep.”
Nodding, Quirin tucked his son in bed before leaving the room, feeling defeated and useless. He didn’t know what to do, which bothered him to no end. That night, unbeknown to the small family, neither father nor son slept.
This morning, Quirin took in a deep breath of fresh air, enjoying the sweetness of the outdoors. It wasn’t until he noticed his son standing in the doorway to their home that he hollered up a greeting. “Morning, Son!”
Varian managed a smile but turned to his raccoon who was comfortably set on his shoulder. “What is it, Buddy?” He asked.
As the two ran off, Quirin continued his work, wondering what he could do to help his son. The sweat droplets that had formed on Varian’s forehead and the boy’s messy hair were both symptoms of the aftermath of a nightmare. I hope he’s okay. Quirin thought to himself. Parking the wheelbarrow further down the road, the protective father made his way back to Varian who looked like he was preparing to leave.
“Where are you headed, Son?”
“Oh-heh- hi, Dad!” The alchemist seemed a bit surprised over his father’s sudden presence. “Yeah, I’m headed to the capitol to visit Xavier. I- I mean if it’s okay with you?” His voice curled into a question as he asked his father for permission.
“Of course, just be back in time to complete your chores.”
“Okay, I will!”
This was the first time Varian had asked to go to Corona on his own. Unsure of how he felt about this, Quirin decided to let the matter go. Perhaps, this was exactly what the boy needed.
Later that day…
It was almost evening and Quirin was starting to get worried. Word that several strange red rocks had appeared in the capital had reached Old Corona. Unable to leave the village, Quirin excruciatingly waited for his son to return. Dread gripped at his heart as he wondered if Varian would be okay.
If anyone had the right to be afraid, it would be him.
This wasn’t a pleasant thought in the slightest. My duties as village leader should not outweigh my job as a father. He tried to convince himself of the fact. Compassion didn’t come naturally for the man, but he knew the importance of keeping his only family safe. The usually decisive man struggled with this thought. Finally settling on going to the capital, Quirin temporarily put one of his trusted friends in charge before rushing off to Corona.
He noticed the red rocks right away; however, before they had any effect on him, they slithered back into the ground like a serpent fleeing from God’s sight. What is going on? He questioned. It seemed like forever until he reached his destination. The citizens all seemed like they were recovering from a good scare, but they still smiled upon seeing the Old Corona leader.
“Quirin, old friend! Did you hear the news?” Xavier waved from outside his smithy.
“Xavier!” The man greeted the pleasant blacksmith. Where’s Varian? He said he would be here! Keeping his thoughts to himself, Quirin allowed his friend to finish his thought.
“Your son is quite the hero!” The blacksmith couldn’t stop grinning.
“Varian?” He wondered if he was hearing correctly or if he had another son that he was unaware of.
“Ah, yes! He saved Corona from the red rocks! The princess said so herself!”
So many thoughts spiraled like a tornado inside his mind, “Where is he?” He decided to ask.
Before Xavier could point, a young voice called out. “Dad? What are you doing here?” Quirin was so relieved to see his son that he didn’t notice Ruddiger’s absence.
“Are you alright? Are you hurt?”
“No, no, no, I’m fine! I’m better than fine actually.” A genuine smile sparkled off of Varian’s young face. He seemed exhausted but clearly high on adrenaline.
“Good. I’m glad.” Quirin couldn’t find the right words to say.
“Before we go home, I need to find Ruddiger!” Varian scratched the back of his neck idly. “He should be fine, but I want to make sure he can get home.”
“Okay.” Quirin suddenly noticed that he was out of breath.
“Goodbye, Xavier!” The boy waved before leading the way to the center of the capital.
As the two walked side by side, Varian explained to his father what had happened. It was terrifying, but therapeutic. A strange combination to Quirin, but he gently smiled and listened to his son’s excitement.
“If it weren’t for Rapunzel I’d be-” His son’s tone shifted so swiftly that it caught Quirin off guard. “Ruddiger!” Upon finding his boy, the chubby raccoon chittered happily and climbed up Varian’s shoulder. “Hehe, good to see you, Buddy!” Before the reunion could get any cuter, a piercing noise came from behind them.
Quirin remained tranquil as Feldspar thanked Varian for the previous events. For the first time in a while, Quirin was proud of his son.
He wanted to show it to him… but how?
“Just doing my part.” Varian watched as the odd man walked off. Ruddiger nuzzled into Varian which made him giggle.
That’s when an idea struck him. Hesitantly at first, Quirin placed his hand firmly on Varian’s shoulder. When the boy turned to look at his father, Quirin immediately thought he had made a mistake. His son looked surprised at the physical touch, but then his expression melted into a shy grin.
Varian’s heart fluttered in his chest. He had craved for physical touch for so long! Now that he had it, he wasn’t sure he liked it. He didn’t know if it was making him uncomfortable or at ease. He honestly couldn’t tell the difference at this time. Little did he know the next big step in their relationship was about to take place: reaching his muscular arms around his son, for the first time, Quirin embraced Varian.
Silently, both father and son decided that physical touch… it wasn’t so bad.
*****
When the young alchemist awoke, he nearly yelped at the face inches away from his own.
“Shhh! Kid, I’m trying to get you out of here.” Eugene’s handsome features were tense with nerves. He was hurriedly untying Varian’s wrists. Maximus was standing guard over their shoulders. “Listen, kid, my father… he’s part of the Brotherhood just like Quirin. In order to stop them we have to destroy the Mindtrap which I’m fairly certain is in Cassandra’s creepy tower.”
Feeling a release of tension behind his back, Varian was able to move his hands in front of him, rubbing the rope burns gingerly. His nausea had subsided; however, his throbbing headache had worsened greatly. Understanding that it was time to move, the young alchemist managed to push himself to his feet. Eugene grabbed his shoulders the moment he noticed the boy sway. “You okay?”
“Ye-yeah, just lightheaded, that’s all.” Came the shaky reply.
Eugene led his injured friend towards Max’s back, and the horse, upon seeing Varian’s serious state, lowered itself so the boy could climb up. Curling his fingers into the horse’s mane, Varian leaned forwards as he felt Eugene’s arms wrap around him. “Hold on, kid!”
As the three raced out into the night, the air cracked and whipped against their faces, stinging their skin and rushing their ears. The eclipse above illuminated across the broken plains creating a tense environment and sense of urgency. Aside from Max’s rhythmic steps, the air was completely silent as if all the birds were afraid to sing and the crickets were too nervous to string their violins. Varian couldn’t fight the feeling like they were inside a timer. They were trying to climb up to the top, but the sand was ruthlessly falling down on them, making everything – moving, thinking, and breathing – more difficult.
So many thoughts rattled through his tortured mind. I have to save, Dad, but how can I break him from the Mindtrap? He obviously doesn’t know what he’s doing, because he would never hurt me. Even though he’s a stern man, he’s not hateful. He always drew the line with physical abuse that’s why he never touched or hugged me before; he was afraid he would lose control. This isn’t just my worst nightmare, this is his! He’s not trapped in the stone; he’s trapped in his own mind!
“Varian?” Eugene’s concerned voice rose over the wind, “You haven’t spoken in a while, which is kinda unusual for you.”
The alchemist took a moment to steady his breathing. “Let’s save our family.” The boy whispered with determination.
“Sounds good to me!” The former thief’s confident reply added to their adrenaline.
This was going to be an unforgettable night.
*****
The moment Varian returned home, Quirin knew something was horribly wrong. His son was trembling and keeping his eyes on the floor as if he had something to hide. Quirin was good at picking out when Varian was trying to keep a secret, but this? It was like part of his son was dying to come clean and the other half dreaded it.
Odd.
It didn’t help that he hadn’t come home at all the following day. Quirin had been asking around the capital and Old Corona for his son, but it appeared he had simply gone missing. He trusted his son and expected that there was a valid reason for him not coming home at all, but it was going on two days now and recentl, Ruddiger had returned to their home without his master. Varian had been working long hours in the Demanitus Chamber trying to decipher the scroll for the last four – almost five – weeks. It was an important job, and they both took it very seriously. Quirin was accustomed to his son coming home late, but this? By the position of the moon, it was far past midnight. Quirin idly paced back and forth knowing full well that sleep was useless. He was just about to head to the capital, when he heard the front door open.
Even though his son looked perfectly fine physically, he had an unusual paleness to him. His freckles were more prominent against his ghostly white skin, and dark circles had formed under his eyes. A burnt smell wafted through the air, but his clothes seemed relatively clean. What is going on? The man wondered.
Immediately, once Varian put his backpack on the kitchen table, Quirin raced towards his son and embraced him. Gratefully, the boy melted into his father’s chest. The leader of Old Corona could feel his son’s exhaustion and gradually helped him to his bedroom. As they walked, Quirin put his bare hand into his son’s hair, brushing through the dirt and grime, and gently taking his goggles off. This entire time, neither spoke. Once the two reached the alchemist’s bedroom, Varian took off his gloves and apron, and Quirin placed his son’s goggles on the dresser. When Varian finally sat down on his bed, he kept his eyes low to the ground.
“I missed you.” Quirin decided to start the conversation with a sweet sentiment. The Lord knows it’s all going to go downhill from here. Quirin muttered soundlessly to himself.
“I missed you too.” Varian gripped one of his arms, hugging himself. Quirin identified this as another sign of discomfort.
“Varian, why are you so late?”
“I was helping Rapunzel celebrate Eugene’s first birthday.” The boy’s ungloved hands clenched his upper arm tightly. There was a brief pause before Varian dug his nails mercilessly into his flesh.
“Varian!” Quirin rushed towards his son, taking his hand away from his shoulder in shock. “What are you doing?”
Suddenly finding his bed very interesting, Varian lowered his face and allowed his midnight black bangs and blue stripe of hair to fall into his face. Not putting up with a moody teenager, Quirin brushed his son’s hair out of his face before letting out a soft gasp.
His son was in tears.
Varian’s face contorted with excruciating intensity almost like he was being abused. “Dad, please,” His voice cracked, “Don’t ask me any questions!”
“But, Varian, something is clearly wrong and-”
“Just wait until tomorrow. Please!” His son begged as more painful tears steamed down his cheeks. “Just, not now!” Varian clenched his hands into fits hoping to find someway to relieve the pressure.
Normally, Quirin would listen to his son, but red lights were going off in the back of his mind. “I’m sorry, Varian, but I can’t do that.”
A look of pure horror washed over Varian’s tear stained face.
“Varian, what is wrong with you?”
“Nothing.” Was the quick response. Within a second, however, the boy convulsed violently before rapidly stringing words together, “I got drugged with the truth serum that I made almost a year ago to trick the guards into telling me where the Sundrop flower was.” Once the last word escaped his lips, the boy withdrew his hands from his father’s grasp and covered his mouth. Briefly, his body relaxed almost with something like relief; however, it was short-lived as he stiffened up again.
Quirin felt a rush of something between a protective hostility and emotional wariness bubble in his chest. “Who?”
“Dad, please!”
“Who did this to you!?!” His voice raised in volume and took control of the situation as more tears tracked out of his son’s eyes. It was clear that his son was struggling to keep his mouth shut.
He groaned and protested, but was unable to stop the drug, “Cassandra. She kidnapped me, knocked me unconscious, and held me prisoner in her tower for two days.” He rubbed his red and puffy eyes
“Did she hurt you?”
“No- ugh, yes.” He continued to wince in agony, “She hit me with some of the black rocks, and then I fell out of the tower, but it’s okay; Lance caught me.” Before he could stop himself, Varian explained all of Quirin’s questions about the previous days. Some of the kind-hearted boy’s thoughts were loving and sweet, while others were of a genuine fear. “I thought I was going to die, when Cassie, uh, Cassandra brought Eugene and I back into her tower. I mean, she was attacking everyone, and I’d never seen her so furious. She looked like she was capable of anything – just like I did when I was the villain.” The last part of his sentence was hushed and sincere. “Dad, I know where she’s coming from, and I want to help her.”
“I know, son. I know.”
Varian leaned against his father and allowed Ruddiger, who had randomly lumbered into the bedroom, to snuggle into his lap. As the night continued to pass, wounds began to heal, and trauma found its ways into the shadows and out of the light. Quirin realized that the boy was becoming drowsy and less reactive. Whether it was the aftermath of the drug or the excitement losing its effect, Varian found his limbs becoming impossible to move as it seemed they had gained several pounds. Quirin was idly running his fingers through his son’s hair before he decided to speak in a soft, carrying tone. “I have more questions, but I understand that you are tired. We can resume this conversation tomorrow, but I want to ask you one more thing.” Gently leaning his son back so that they could look into each other’s eyes, Quirin continued, “Varian, I’m giving you the choice if you want me to ask the question or not. I want to hear the answer, but I want to hear it from you, not the truth serum. Would you prefer I ask tomorrow? I understand if you do.”
Varian thought about it. What did he want to know? His question could go a number of ways. The young alchemist’s forehead wrinkled as he frowned, deep in thought. He trusted his father, and he was convinced that his father trusted him too, but if this was so, why was it intimidating to be an open book?
It shouldn’t be.
“We made a deal: no secrets.” His frail voice bloomed through his tired smile.
Quirin took in a deep breath before asking the question that could very possibly ruin so much: “Why did you not want to tell me?”
Whether it was the drug or the boy, the response was quick, “Because Cassandra wanted more than anything to make her father proud. If I told you what she’s done–” He paused abruptly as if searching for the correct words, “It’s your duty to tell the Captain of the Guard, and I would never forgive myself if I was the reason their relationship could never be repaired.”
“Why does this matter so much to you?”
“Because I know what it’s like to disappoint your father.” Once he had started, the boy couldn’t stop. Bottled-up emotions gushed out just like the tears on his face. “I know that gut punching feeling when you see his face after you try so hard to impress him. I know how it crushes you because each time you do something good you get your hopes up only to be smashed back down again. I know how frustrating it is to see how your own father – the only person that matters in your life – looks ashamed of you. I know the horror that comes when you watch his face flush with embarrassment when you’re seen with him in public. I know what it’s like because every moment of every day all I can think about is making you proud, and every day I let you down. I’m tired of being trapped in this hopeless, endless cycle, and I don’t want her to be broken like-” The trembling alchemist was unable to finish as he hugged himself, crying openly. Not even the truth serum could force his worn-out body to finish his thoughts.
Noticeably upset and wanting to comfort Varian, Ruddiger whimpered inside his beloved boy’s arms. Quirin watched his son and the raccoon in complete shock. His mouth slightly open and his eyes suddenly wide and blurry.
In between the sobs violently shaking his body, Varian detected two warm, loving arms wrapping around him, engulfing him with security and the sweet smell of his father. “Varian, you don’t need validation. You need to be proud of yourself. I’m just a man, and – if anything – I am the one not worthy of your greatness. You don’t need to impress others. Know why? Because I am proud of you Varian, and I mean it, and I will say it as many times as you need to hear it. But there is so much more potential inside of you. You should achieve great things because you want to. Don’t be selfish, but do things for yourself, because Varian you are worth it. You don’t understand now, but you are more valuable than all of the gold in this world! You just haven’t realized it yet.”
Throughout his father’s words, Varian’s sobs turned into quiet whimpers until he fell asleep. The last emotion his conscious mind could recall was a sense of lightness and ease. It was like a weight that he didn’t know existed was removed.
*****
Eugene, Varian, and Max had reached the black rock tower and were halfway up the windy steps when they heard the silence finally break. The entrance to the tower opened and several heavy footsteps clattered up the stairs. Mind controlled Hector, Edmund, and Quirin were on their tails.
“Come on Max, let’s pick up the pace,” Eugene commanded his second-in-command as he pushed his heels firmly but gently into Maximus’s strong sides. Varian gripped the horse’s neck tighter as they sped up. Once the three reached the top of the steps, the young alchemist felt a chill on the back of his neck. Petrifying memories flooded these blackened, angry walls. He didn’t want to be back here, but he would do anything to save his father. This was their only option.
“Stand guard.” Eugene said to Max as he and Varian hopped onto the cold ground. Team Awesome studied their surroundings through the dimly lit throne room. The blue, hateful flames that lit up last time they were here, had vanquished leaving them in a twisted enigma of darkness. Eugene was the first to notice the Mindtrap softly glowing on and off – similar to the steadiness a heartbeat – next to Cassandra’s throne. Varian attentively watched as his older friend reached his hand out only to be kicked back by a fierce looking female warrior. Her face was pale on one side showing a calm, coolness to her, and the other side was painted red resembling blood. Varian suddenly felt dizzy.
Without hesitation, Adira grasped the Mindtrap and pointed her sword at Eugene. Immediately, Varian raced to his rescue, until he realized he was completely unarmed. Oh, you’ve got to be joking! You know for someone with my brains, I sure can make the dumbest mistakes! As the alchemist reached his friend’s side, he stared courageously at their friend turned foe. Glancing briefly at Eugene, Varian noticed the uncertain, almost torn, expression on his face. This “Adira” lady may not have been his family, but he was noticeably dreading to fight her. It would only be a matter of time before the rest of the Brotherhood outnumbered them. Max was strong, but could he hold off all three remaining members?
Clenching his fists, Varian prepared for whatever they would have to do to get the Mindtrap and save his father.
The fight didn’t last long. Adira was far more skilled than both the new Captain of the Guard and the weary alchemist. Varian was frustrated when he realized how useless he was. Without materials or anything to work with other than unbreakable black rocks, there was nothing he could do of significance. After a surprise kick, Eugene managed to gain the upper hand and pushed her back. Suddenly feeling cornered, Adira launched the Mindtrap behind both alchemist and captain. Whipping their heads back to follow the vital item, both members of Team Awesome instantly felt a sharp ache of dread penetrate their stomachs as they watched none other than Quirin catch it.
Max, who was busy fighting off Hector and Edmund, was unable to take on all three at once. Quirin, snatching the Mindtrap, hid it inside his armor, before intimidatingly moving his sword into an attacking position. Before either Varian or Eugene could react, Adira launched herself at Eugene from behind. Both tumbled to the ground and continued their scuffle, thus leaving Varian to face his father.
Okay Varian, the desperate boy tried to spark an idea in his mind, Think outside the box. Don’t think like an alchemist; think like a son.
“Dad!” He shouted.
His father didn’t falter in his advancing movements. There was a disturbingly blank stare covering his face.
“Dad, you’re being controlled.”
As if his son’s words meant nothing, Quirin ignored him and slammed the handle of his sword into his son’s tiny frame.
Falling to the ground, the boy curled into himself as pain spread throughout his body in agonizing waves. Still, he did not give up. “We’re in this together, Dad. You didn’t give up on me, and I’m not giving up on you.”
No response.
Slamming his foot into his son’s side, Quirin remained emotionless – completely unaware of what he was doing.
Tears gathered in Varian’s eyes, and he recoiled at the disgusting, metallic taste in his mouth. He knew better than to look at the liquid dripping down his face and around the corners of his lips. He was already dizzy enough.
He needed a different tactic. He couldn’t say obvious things; he had to say what was on his heart. Through his dotted vision and tormented body, he managed to raise his head and look into his father’s eyes. “Dad- ” He had to spit blood in order to continue, “Dad, these last six months, you’ve helped me forgive you and more importantly- ” He coughed, a nasty sound, “I’ve finally forgiven myself.”
Quirin raised his sword directly above Varian’s head ready to slam it down on him. Somehow, Varian’s head, which was beating like a speeding war drum, made out Eugene’s voice screaming his name from the opposite side of the room. Ignoring his fear, Varian bravely spoke to his lost father, “But that’s just it, Dad. You’re not trapped because of the Mindtrap; you’ve trapped yourself inside of your own mind, and you haven’t forgiven yourself for it.”
Nothing.
The boy’s father stood frozen with his sword ready to pierce his son’s skull, but he didn’t move and neither did the boy. They stared at each other until–
Until, the unnatural blue light in Quirin’s eyes flickered like the candle that stood between them that night they were reunited. Just like that candle’s wax, the barrier between them had finally melted. Their hard work, their strenuous journey of redemption, and their hope to rebuild their bond, had finally been completed.
Building off of his son’s strength, Quirin used the sword that was supposed to take his son’s life and stabbed the Mindtrap. Kneeling down to see his bloodied and beaten son, Quirin realized that he had never found his son more beautiful than he was in this moment. Scooping the boy up, Quirin pressed his forehead against Varian’s, unbothered by the fact that his son’s blood was dripping on him. All those years before, Quirin was rigid in his belief that his wife was the love of his life even past her death, but something in him had shattered.
Now, the love of his life was lying securely in his arms.
“Who cares about pride?” He spoke through tears, “I love you, Varian.”
Varian smiled and, if he wasn’t this exhausted, he would have let out a laugh of pure joy. He thought nothing could feel better than to hear his father say he was proud of him.
He was wrong.
This was the first time Quirin told him that he loved him, and something told Varian that it wouldn’t be the last.
Heskan Aeducan as a Companion
(Face Claim: Can Yaman) - Okay, I really wanted to do this because Heskan is basically the hot romanceable dwarf we’d all deserve in Inquisition. He uses the Dwarf Noble Origin and has the Spirit Warrior specialization, using it as an archer.
Hope y’all like him! Feel free to romance him, haha!
Inquisitor’s Name: Heskan “Hess” Aeducan
Race, Class, & Specialization: Dwarf Archer Warrior (Spirit Warrior)
Varric’s Nickname for them: Feathers
Default Tarot Card: The Chariot
How they are recruited: He joins automatically if you talk to him at the gate leading to the bridge in Skyhold; a cutscene triggers where he and Leliana are speaking and she vouches for his skill and he offers aid to the Inquisition.
Where they are in Skyhold: Aiming his bow over the battlements, taking potshots at trees in the distance.
Things they Generally Approve of: Pragmatic options, manipulating nobles, recruiting prisoners
Things they Generally Disapprove of: Letting prisoners go, executing them, dismissing Sera from the Inquisition, hitting Solas or Dorian
Mages, Templars, Other?: Heskan comes from Orzammar, and is really tired of having to deal with this whole surface conflict, especially as darkspawn get closer and closer to overrunning his people. That said, he prefers the mages. Templars he doesn’t trust.
Romanceable?: Yes, by any gender or race.
Friends in the Inquisition: Cole, Vivienne, and Iron Bull - Heskan and Varric have a not-quite-friendly rivalry.
Small side mission: Run around Skyhold collecting a stray arrow each time you return to Skyhold. 9 arrows altogether, every 3 arrows earns you a Heskan Greatly Approves.
Companion quest: Heskan wants to know if he is accessing the Fade through his Spirit Warrior specialization and asks the Inquisitor and Cole to help him, sleeping in front of them so they can test it. Cole mentions that Heskan is actually afraid of finding out the truth. After he wakes up, the Inquisitor has two options. Neither option impacts the ability to romance him.
Option 1: Lie and say no. This will net Disapproval from Solas and Approval from Cole and Heskan. Heskan seems relieved to learn that he is not upending all the rules for dwarfs and talking to him later reveals he is a little concerned because he’s been getting fragments of dreams, but nothing else comes of this.
Option 2: Tell the truth. This will net Slight Disapproval from Cole and Great Approval from Heskan. Heskan admits that the idea of breaking all the rules for dwarfs and magic is frightening, but he is thrilled to consider this (if a Dwarven Inquisitor replies they feel the same way, they can earn extra approval). Talking to him later reveals that he has come to terms with accessing the Fade and he wants to attempt speaking with the spirit he has bonded with.
Tarot card change
Option 1: The Chariot (reversed)
Option 2: Knight of Pentacles
Cole’s reflection on their thoughts: “The smile should not have to be my mask, but it serves its purpose, bright and blinding as I bleed from the wounds in my back.”
Comment(s) on Mages: “Poor sods. I’d be pretty tired too if someone shut me up in a tower all my life and didn’t let me breathe wrong.”
Comment(s) on Templars: “We trade these people lyrium and we don’t care where it goes... but seeing what happens to them... I wonder if it’s worth it.”
When looking for something: “Did somebody hear that?”
When finding a campsite: “Care to kick up your feet for a while, Inquisitor?”
When the Inquisitor Falls: “Hurry, save the Inquisitor!”
When they are low on Health: “Hello? Archer needing help over here?”
When they see a Dragon: “You’re gonna go fight that thing, aren’t you?
Default saying: “Sort of brisk out here, isn’t it?”
Travel Banter with Canon Companions of your choice:
Heskan: So, Varric. Varric: (Sighs) Hello, Feathers. Heskan: You don’t like me much, do you? Varric: One handsome dwarf archer is enough for a good story. You’re a bit superfluous. Heskan: Don’t spare my feelings or anything...
Vivienne: Tell me, Prince Aeducan. What are you doing on the surface? Heskan: Madame Vivienne, please. You may call me Prince Heskan. Varric (if present): (Disgusted noise.) Vivienne: That wasn’t an answer, Prince Heskan. Heskan: No... no it wasn’t.
Heskan: Varric? Varric: (Sighs) What is it, Feathers? Heskan: Oh, I apologize. You must be trying to find a way to describe me other than “exceptionally ugly.” Varric: So you read The Tale of the Champion, huh? Heskan: If anything, I’d say that only one of us uses chest hair to distract from our sorry faces. Varric: “Hideously ugly and arrogant” it is, then. Heskan: Lazy writing!
Cole (after Heskan’s personal quest is complete and he is told the truth): She says hello. Heskan: She? She who? Cole: I don’t know... she’s you. (if made more human) I used to see her better. Heskan: Oh. Could you... could you tell her thank you? Cole: She knows. Heskan: Thank you, Cole.
Friendship?: “Hello there, love. Miss me?”
Leaving the Inquisition: “I’m not fond of the way you’re running things here. If you don’t shape up, I’d rather be sucked up into the Fade than hang around here.”
The Fade
How they react: “Well... this is different. Not sure I should really be here, actually.” Their Tombstone: Betrayal What the Fears look like: His dead brother Trian What the Nightmare says: “Ah, the murderer-Prince of Orzammar. Have they forgiven you for killing your brother yet? Or do you think they’re waiting for the right time to strike?” Their reflection about the Fade: "Yeah, I’m not so sure I enjoyed that.” Hawke or Warden: Has worked with both, Disapproves if Hawke or Alistair is left behind. Greatly Approves if Loghain is left behind. Approves if Stroud is left behind.
The Wardens
Their feelings: Respects the Wardens, being a veteran of the Fifth Blight and working with the Hero.  Exile or Allies?: Allies
The Ball
How they feel: “Smile, love. We’ve got a role to play here, so stay guarded.” Where they linger: Outside the door to Gaspard’s balcony Are they good at the Game?: Very much so. What people say about them: “Oh, that dwarven Prince is such a good dancer!” “Tall for a dwarf, isn’t he?” Gaspard, Briala, or Celene?: Prefers Briala through Gaspard
Temple of Mythal
Rituals or Hole?: Hole Agree with the Elves’ bargain?: Agree. Morrigan or Inquisitor for the Well?: Morrigan
Comments on Canon Romance
Cassandra: “Personally, the Seeker frightens me. But if you’ve chosen each other, I can tell she’ll be true.” Dorian: “Treat him well, Inquisitor. He’s been through enough in his life, I can tell.” Sera: “Hah, fun for all, eh? She’s a firecracker, she is.”  Iron Bull: “Heh, he’s a fun one. If you two weren’t together...” Josephine: “Ah, Lady Montilyet. A fine woman indeed. You’re lucky, Inquisitor. They don’t come much sharper than her.” Cullen: “Ah, I’ve met Cullen a few times before. He’s... he’s a better man than I once knew, I’ll say that.” Blackwall: “I’m definitely not qualified to judge. But he’ll treat you right, Inquisitor.” Solas: “Well, to each their own.”
Sexual/Racial preference: Panromantic. Any race.
Nickname for PC: My sweet
Romance only mission: Heskan asks the Inquisitor to accompany him to Valammar, where he has heard rumors of trouble brewing. The party is ambushed by Endrin loyalists who want Heskan dead for the alleged killing of his brother ten years ago. Afterwards, Heskan explains the details of his murky past, including why he killed his brother, and how he has always had to look over his shoulder. Choosing the dialogue response “Maybe I could look for you” locks in the romance, and Heskan expresses awe and joy that their casual flirting actually meant something.
Dialog to being asked for a kiss: “How could I refuse you, my sweet?”
Halamshiral dialog: “Just keep up that pretty smile of yours, my sweet. I promise I’ll put a real one on your face once the party’s over.”
Being asked to dance during mission: “As much as you want. Once this business with the Empress is over, of course.”
Asking to dance post-mission: “Come here... you’ve done so well tonight. If I can help you relax... I am honored.”
What Cole says about companion to PC: “The smile... it used to be false. Fake, fleeting, like feathers in the wind. But now... he is safe, secure...his sweet is here.”
Who is concerned about the relationship?: Varric, Cullen
Who supports the relationship?: Josephine, Leliana, Vivienne, Dorian
Who had a bet running on it?: Blackwall, Iron Bull, Sera
Banter(between NPCs):
Varric: So... you and the Inquisitor? Heskan: Ha, I never figured you for the jealous type, Varric. Varric: I - that’s... ugh.
Vivienne: A well-made match, my dear Prince. I congratulate you. Heskan: For once, Madame, I was not considering politics. Vivienne: Nonsense. Matters of the heart are just as political as anything else. Heskan: (chuckles) I suppose that on that count, we agree.
Iron Bull: So, are you a one-lover dwarf, or can I expect you again? Heskan: Why, Bull, you know I’ll never forget that magical night... Sera (if present): Ewww! How would that... oh. Fingers. Heskan: BUt in any event, you’d have to ask my sweet one. (The Inquisitor can respond favorably or unfavorably) Favorably Inquisitor: You could... if you don’t mind my presence. Iron Bull: The more the merrier! Heskan: My sweet, the Bull makes an excellent footrest. I’ll have to show you... Unfavorably Inquisitor: Sorry, Bull. He’s mine. Heskan: And I need no other lover.
Flirt options: Upon meeting (gains Slight Disapproval from Varric), and at almost every interaction. Flirting with him enough unlocks his romance quest without needing to gain higher approval
Break up dialog:
If PC breaks it off: “I understand. It was fun while it lasted, though, eh? I’ll see you around, my - er, Inquisitor.”
If NPC breaks it off(and why): “I... I can’t condone what you’re doing, my sweet. I wish it could be different. I wish I could help you... but I cannot.” (Low Approval breaks off the romance)
Love confession: Heskan takes the Inquisitor walking along the battlements. “I... I never really thought I would find anyone who truly cared... but with you... I feel safe. I feel like... I could be happy.” The Inquisitor can flirt with him, which leads to a sex scene and lazy kissing in the Inquisitor’s bedroom, or say they love him, which leads to him pulling them to him with his bow string and kissing them deeply. “Then I am yours as long as you will have me, my sweet.” In either event, the Inquisitor can ask for a kiss or ask to “take a long walk,” which will result in a brief implied sex cutscene with a shirtless Heskan leaning over to kiss the Inquisitor in their bed.
Romanced tarot card: King of Pentacles
End game dialog: “You’ve done it. Beaten the villain, slain the dragon. I wish I could tell you it gets easier from here... but no matter what, I will be at your side, my sweet. Always.”
If you’re still accepting requests. How about the Inquisitor, Hero of Fereldan and Hawke got together and are drinking in the tavern talking to one another when someone asks who could win in a fight between the three of them. They all joke about the question before simultaneously saying “I would” as they all go silent for a moment before suddenly the table gets tossed aside as a fight starts between the three. How do the companions (Plus advisors if you want) react to the fight.
Cassandra: "I can't say I'm honestly surprised," Cassandra says. She makes a noise of disgust at the performance and decided to make herself scarce during the fight. Suddenly the fact that all three get along with Varric makes much more sense.
Varric: "Sorry Inquisitor my money is on Hawke. They can fight pretty dirty." Hawke is Varric's best friend, but he'll be the first to admit some of their tricks are straight below the belt. Sometimes literally.
Vivienne: Vivienne thinks their behavior is uncoothe, but she isn't above playing a bet. While Vivienne has more class to get herself goaded into a fight, she still has the inclination to make some coin. Might as well take advantage of the situation.
Blackwall: Blackwall could see himself getting in such shenanigans were he a decade or so younger. He's too old and tired for such things now. It's still amusing to watch the Inquisitor engage in such things. If anyone can win, it'll be the Inquisitor.
Cole: "I don't understand. They're fighting, but everyone is laughing. No one is angry." Cole looks at the scene with concern until Bull and Varric explain it's a friendly fight. He still doesn't see how a fight can be friendly, but at least no one is sad.
Solas: Solas can hear the fight all the way from the library. He rolls his eyes and goes straight back to his research. There is no absolutely nothing interesting or fascinating about a fight before three supposed heroes of Thedas. Honestly such behavior is expected from children.
Sera: "Come on, Inquisitor! Show them who's boss and if you get into a bind make one of those rifts, yeah?" Sera really isn't sure how that demon crap works and she doesn't want to know either. It'll still be fricken hilarious to see in a fight.
Iron Bull: "Now this is what I call fun!" Bull shouts, ordering himself another tankard of ale so he can enjoy the fight. He's decided not to place a bet on anyone. Besides, he'd rather focus on the fight and see who gets their ass handed to them.
Dorian: Dorian has the unfortunate luck of being in the tavern when the 'fight' breaks out. He sighs, barely avoiding getting hit by some of the flying around. It's quite silly to waste all that energy proving to see who will win a fight. Dorian can think of so many other ways to expend such energy.
Leliana: Leliana isn't one to get in on betting, but when she heard of the fight in the tavern she immediately decides to put money on the Hero of Fereldan. They survived a Blight and so much more. If anyone can be beat Hawke and the Inquisitor it's them.
Josephine: Josephine wouldn't have cared about the fight if only several pieces of furniture and windows in the Tavern weren't completely destroyed. "This is coming straight out of your funds, Inquisitor and as for the other two you're banned from the Tavern for a month."
Cullen: Cullen's first reaction is to laugh. He's done some silly things while drunk himself. The biggest one is losing all of his clothes to the Lady Ambassador during that's horrid game of Wicked Grace. At least all three will remain clothed. Well, one can hope...
Today at 1:00 PM EST I saw Cats the Musical at the Shubert Theater with my mom. Here’s the saga:
Tumblr media
Overture:
Mistoffelees was right next to me in the overture with glowing cats eyes and I nearly died right there.
I started crying during the overture, my mom gave me a tissue. Going great so far.
I started screaming at the end of the overture, people are starting to realize I’m a crazy person.
Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats:
Omg they’re here and they’re real and I’m here! I’m crying again.
I pointed out Cassandra to my mom as she came up the aisle. Mom is questioning why I know all the cats names.
MISTO AND TUGGER ARE CUDDLING EACH OTHER HOLY SHIT
The guy the cats call out for being surprised was right in front of me he looked So confused and scared and I was just grinning behind him.
Naming of Cats:
I’m whispering the words along with the cats. Plato made eye contact and smiled at me. I’m crying again.
Watching Victoria in the background is so much fun. She’s getting really into this.
Victoria’s Dance:
Tumblr media
Invitation to the Jellicle Ball:
Misto sneaking up on Victoria with a mischievous look in his eye is a mood.
Victoria looks so annoyed with him, they are literally me and my brother and it makes me so happy.
I love this Misto’s voice and he’s so fucking graceful and elegant and I love him!
MISTO AND TUGGER ARE DANCING TOGETHER OMG
Mungo and Rumple try to greet Munk and he rolls his eyes and tells them to go away. Jerre is very upset at this.
Gumbie Cat:
Looks like the trunk is either broken or not functioning in this space so Jenny just kinda slid out onto the top of it but she’s so beautiful so I don’t care.
Misto is being such a helpful and concerned boy whenever Jenny is around. He’s very concerned when Jenny spaces out for a solid minute.
The Gumbie trio are angels and I will take this belief to my grave.
Plato being a snarky little shit during the dance break made me laugh.
FOR SHES A JOLLY GOOD FELLOW
The Rum Tum Tugger:
He’s here and Skimble is not happy about it!
Misto and Skimble are arguing in the background. Looks like misto is saying Tugger is cute and Skimble is disagreeing.
Misto makes sure Skimble isn’t looking before joining the dance.
Skimble stop trying to pull cats away from Tugger he’s a big sexy magnet and you can’t stop those hips.
My mom is singing along, this makes me so happy.
Misto is just twitching and squealing like a kitten he loves his boyfriend so much.
Munk has given up, just rolled his eyes and walked off stage.
Skimble is now complaining to Jenny, Jenny is too busy staring at Tuggers ass to pay any mind.
Grizabella the Glamour Cat:
Oof. No one is happy rn.
George is extremely startled poor baby.
Munk is trying his best to keep Demeter away and she is not happy about it.
Bomba actually walked up with her arms extended only to hiss and scamper off at the last second. That’s cold girl.
Munk is being very protective of the cats around him. Tugger walked off and Misto ran after him.
Demeter has such a pretty voice and Bomba is so sultry and AH SHIT I’m crying again.
Platoria alert! PLATORIA ALERT!
Bustopher Jones:
Misto continuing to be an extremely helpful boy making everything glow.
The actor did a great job but I honestly prefer his Gus more but we shall get to him later.
First Macavity Scare:
AH SHIT ITS GETTING SPOOKY
Misto and Tugger reaching out to each other before running off in fear.
Bomba being the last cat onstage showing that she don’t give a damn.
Plato is protecting both Cassandra and Victoria. I’m noticing a lot of Plato and Cassandra moments and I’m not sure how I feel about that just yet.
Mungojerre and Rumpleteazer:
ENTER THE CHAOS GREMLINS!
I love them so much and they were extremely slinking baby bastards.
The cartwheel was better than my best dream I’m so happy I’m gonna cry again!!!
Munk and Alonzo ain’t too happy with their shenanigans.
Old Deuteronomy:
“Old Deuteronomy?”
Munk and Tugger duet. ;-;
Platoria cuddling. ;-;
MISTO SMILING AT ME AS HE PASSES. ;—;
Second Macavity Scare:
Everyone just fucking bolted. No protecting, no character interactions, just pure fuck this shit I’m out.
The Jellicle Ball:
This was the happiest I have been in a very long time.
The dancing was gorgeous and the character interactions are absolutley amazing throughout the entire sequence. It was truly a wonderful sight. And yes I did cry again, I’m running out of tissues.
Pas de Deux:
I love that there was no awkwardness or hesitation, just pure love and devotion and OH MY GOD HE ALMOST DROPPED VICTORIA.
Like everything was fine in the end but he visibly stumbled and old Deuteronomy looked very startled for a hot sec. Still very beautiful.
Memory:
DANGIT GRIZZABELLA I HAD JUST STOPPED CRYING!
In all honesty my favorite part was old Deuteronomy looking longingly at her in the background. He misses her so much. ;-;
INTERMISSION :3
Moments of Happiness:
Old Deuteronomy’s voice is so strong and his vibrato is simply heavenly.
Deut pats cori on the head, cori pats Jemima on the head, Jemima sings like an angel.
Look at all those angels!
Gus the Theater Cat:
Jellylorum has such a lovely voice and her gentle movements are lovely.
Gus insulting the kittens is absolutely adorable, they’re so insulted.
Gus playfully hissing at Jemima before booping her nose makes me so soft.
Cat puns making the audience laugh is always wonderful.
The Pekes and the Pollices:
Whispered to my mom before hand “get ready for some chaos”.
Winsome Chinese :3
Misto with a boot on his head is more hilarious than it should be.
Gus has such a wonderful voice and it’s very clear he’s having a blast up there.
Gus received the standing ovation he deserved. Bless that wiry cat man.
Skimbleshanks:
“SKIMBLESHANKS THE RAILWAY CAT”
Alonzo and Jenny playing cards in the background while Skimble sings has a very specific vibe to it.
Mungo is so happy to be dancing with his dad and is just running around like a kitten.
Misto has slipped away to unleash his inner laserpointer.
Macavity Kidnapping:
DEMETER IS DOWN FOLKS SHE IS OUT LIKE A LIGHT.
Munk trying to shield everyone’s eyes and accidentally looking at Macavity and passing out.
Aaaand there goes cat dad.
Macavity:
Deme baby looks so startled.
Bomba we get it you have the hots for Macavity stop biting your lip like that.
YES GURLS FUCKING WORK!!!
Macavity Fight:
Poor Munk getting thrown around like a rag doll, Plato too getting flipped over.
Alonzo like “BITCH LET GO OF MY BOYFRIENDS GIRLFRIEND!”
Mac trying to use his magic to rehypnoitize the cats and looking genuinely scared when it doesn’t work.
Black out!
Mr. Mistoffelees:
Tugger being like alright y’all shut up while I sing about my boyfriend.
PJ is so graceful and beautiful!!! His voice is also very gentle and lovely and him and Tugger being so touchy makes me so happy.
THEY HUUUGGED!!!!!
OH WELL I NEVER WAS THERE EVER A CAT SO CLEVER AS MAGICAL MISTER MISTOFFELEES?!?!! ;—;
Memory:
This was a simply gorgeous performance. This Grizabella made some wonderful character choices and there was a beautiful satisfaction when Victoria took her hand.
I did notice that even after he touched her Tugger looked very uncomfortable at Grizabella’s presence.
Journey to the Heaviside Layer:
Oh.. oh my god I didn’t realize the tire flew that high. OH MY GOD I DIDN'T REALIZE GRIZABELLA ACTUALLY FLEW AWAY.
Addressing of Cats:
Heavenly Deut voice, audience bursted out laughing at the “cat is not a dog” line and I can’t blame them. Crescendo, bows, and it’s over...
POST SHOW :O
After the show me and my mom went across the street to buy cookies and when we came out we saw them striking the set! Here’s them putting the tire in the truck! :3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall this was a magical experience and you bet your sparkly ass I’ll be looking out for when the tour comes back around to me. Now if you excuse me I need to buy more tissues.
Pax shared wonderful fanart today at Edgelord Central with Stephanie as Red Hood, and me and Cara were exchanging plot bunnies about it but then I had to run because work but now I’m here so.
Red Hood Stephanie, right? So, reverse Batkids AU.
Damian did not grew up with the League. Talia and Bruce were married. Damian was born and lived most of his life in Gotham. He was not the first partner for Batman - that would be Duke, Signal. Duke's parents were Jokerized, Bruce and Talia took him in. Duke was not supposed to be a mask! But then the Riddler was terrorising Gotham, and Duke cracked his riddles, and came to Bruce, like, we need to do something!!! I'm just a teenager, police won't listen to me. And Bruce is like: I know a guy.
So that's how Duke became a superhero, even before anyone knew he is meta. But then his powers start to show! And Bruce had to contact other Justice League members. That's how Young Justice was formed. Now, Duke is on Justice League.
Damian is second oldest. He is a distinguished young man leading the Titans. Then Cassandra. The OG Batgirl here. Or, she was, before hmmm say, Bruce found out she killed a man when she was six and - did not react well. So Cass left. Then
Stephanie. The second Batgirl, only Bruce compared her to Cass too many times, gave her little training and a lot of desire to prove herself. She was fired. War Games is a go. So. Died on the job, got better. Came back as a Red Hood: the only reason her plan failed because it was not actually her plan, she was working on wrong intel. Now, she is going to get it right, do everything herself.
Her Replacement is Tim. She doesn't hate him by the way, he is kinda cute, but he's also an asshole so she won't hesitate to fight him. She does resent Bruce for Tim, because the way he is with Tim is never how he was with Stephanie, and that sucks. So she won't hesitate to, like, shoot him in the face because Bruce sucks but also she knows full well it's not like he will actually allow himself to get shot.
Also, Steph loves Cass? And Cass certainly feels for her. But her own trauma makes that relationship difficult. But I think Cass is the only one who can make Stephanie stop killing, and not by fighting. They would just, hmm, conspire? Cass trains her to take down people without killing them. Steph involves her in intricate plots with lots of undercover work and posing as gang boss to take crime down from the inside.
Meanwhile, Tim is Red Robin because reasons. Hmm. Once, when he's out on patrol alone, he comes upon a street kid in distress but spooks him and the kid smashes him with a brick to his face.
It was Jason, guys. Also he does indeed yeet Tim off the roof the next time they cross paths, just as Cara said. Because come on, ofc he would, he used tire iron on Batman while caught stealing his tires.
Right now, though, he is not stealing anything, thank you very much and fuck you, Red Robin! He's here around Gotham Museum at night because he wants to twarfth the crime, thank you very much.
Tim doesn't believe him because classism is just like that sometimes. But in the end it turns out he is telling the truth, Ma Gunn used her charges to rob the museum, and the kid was there to stop her. Red Robin bust everyone, except Jason frees over kids, even if he knows full well they will know he is responsible for them getting caught, and snitches get stiches, so - if Jason ever is placed at the same foster home as any of them or anyone who knows them or knows someone who knows them.... Same for juvie. Or, and street gangs are not his best friends either now.
Well. Jason knows he did the right thing because Ma Gunn was exploiting the kids in her charge. But no one is going to say thank you.
Least of all Red Robin OR Batman, who is very suspicious of this Jason Todd kid and forbids Tim to interact with him.
Which, of course, makes Tim defensive of Jason to Bruce's face. But his relationship with Jason himself are, I bet, tumultuous at best.
So. Jason is not adopted. Like, at all. He still does his own thing, if there are kids or women involved. Also, Red Hood is his idol, kinda. Well, Batgirl, of course! Both of them. And Black Bat/Orphan (not sure which moniker would use Cass and which Damian), now that she is back. But most of all, Red Hood. I feel like he would like to join forces with them. He may be an excellent option for going undercover in Black Mask's gang. Where he also meets Artemis and they steal Bizarro, and leave Gotham.
Barbara got into it without involvement with any others. She loved Batgirls and wanted to be one, but Joker, bullet, you know how this ends. Or begins! She starts out as Oracle, to keep her father safe, and help people like Batgirls did! And Cass and Stephanie find out about her and they work together now.
At this point, Bruce is like 50. Dick could be his grandson for god sake. And of course, he is on best behaviour with Dick. He has, like, experience with kids now, and not too overstressed because at this point there is a lot less crime in Gotham thanks to Stephanie and Cassandra and Barbara, mainly. So. It’s all cool, and Bruce is chill, and he does not! Make Dick a Robin or anyone. He at this point in life there he does not need a child in tights to keep a light on the porch or something. Okay? He sends Dick to therapy to help cope with his parents tragic death, not allowing him to chase their killers (especially because Zucco is caught by Batgirls)
But he dies. I mean Bruce.
So, there does it leave Dick? Alfred is, like, pushing eighty at this point. Talia - she left around the same time Damian did, because Ra’s became very insistent that Damian is to be his heir (wanting, of course, to take over his body or some shit like that) - she has to deal with this, and the only permanent way to do it was to kill him and take over as Demon’s Head. So - she can’t exactly place it on hold and go play a parent to a totally strange kid.
So Damian steps up. He does not become Batman, no. That’s what Cass is for - she lived in Gotham those last years, and gave it more than he did, so she deserves it and better suited to it anyhow. No, Damian just adopts Dick.
And, like. Still does not allow him onto the streets to fight crime?
Like, I dunno. I want at least one Bat-kid to be, like, a normal kid. And I think without there being a need to be a counter-balance to Batman’s Dark Knight, without there’s a need to be someone who grounds Bruce there on the streets... I think it’s possible, in this universe, that the only one who escaped it is Dick, who came to the family the latest.
And, like, I know - Dick wanted to help people, serve justice, yeah, yeah. But. Putting on tights is not the only way to do that, ok?
So, to sum it up:
- Duke is Signal, he’s on Justice League;
- Damian is civilian now, growing out of shadows of his parents; and he’s raising a kid, Dick, who is also civilian;
- Cass is Batman, Steph is Red Hood, together they fight crime and strike fear in the hearts of criminals everywhere!
- Tim is Red Robin. Currently, he’s tracking a theory that Bruce is not dead but lost in time. He’s going to travel a lot, and on his travels, he’s going to meet Jason again, and his Outlaws Artemis and Bizarro, and also Roy and Koriand’r, and they will travel together, looking for the Bow of Ra, for Bruce, for their next quest;
- Black Mask is arrested for tax evasion; Joker died under mysterious circumstances. Crime is at all times low in Gotham.
So, that’s my take on Reverse Batkids AU. What’s yours?
