Elijah, throughout the events of the story, is constantly walking a wire between complete madness and Knowing Just Enough to not be in danger. Reading the Necronomicon sorta comes with that ,,

His entire character development isn’t so much an ‘arc’ but a spiral. In my head, there’s this constant sense of uncertainty and dread just sort of floating around him. Waiting. Watching. A rotting aura, being patient, just ready to strike at the moment he stumbles from that wire — on the wrong side, that is.

He’s still a good person throughout it all, somehow. He maybe kills a few people, but it’s never without reason. His need, his hunger to save people … it’s never really clear whether that’s what’s actually pushing him closer to the edge, or The Horrors.

He’s so impossibly and uncontrollably intent on holding those he cares about as close as possible. Maybe not emotionally — he’s not good with feelings — but the knowledge that they are safe and physically around is plenty.

So, when that’s threatened? Yeah, it sorta. fucks him up. He sees himself as holding the world in his hands, any and all the time. He’s consoled hundreds of sinners, holds morbid, whispered secrets. He’s tasted the dank stench of the world, and somehow — somehow — he still believes that it’s all worth saving. Well … maybe not all of it, but you get the point.

He’s selfless, edging on completely inconsiderate to his own wellbeing. There is nothing compelling him to read such a torturous book. Nothing but himself. Nothing but the weight of everything he deems himself deserving and undeserving of.

He has to read. He has to know — to know how to save the people he loves, how to fix whatever mistakes he thinks he’s made, how to burn it all to ash if he really has to. He has to read. And it’s all just obsession, and crucifixes, and begging to save “just one more”.
