''Along with the niches of more counter-cultural inspired Evangelicals releasing more and more #music through the 80s, artists tried to keep up and create or come into the amorphous sounds and scenes of what came to be called “#grunge”
''Grunge can be defined in various social, musical, aesthetic, and political ways, with its roots in punk and that scene(s)’ diversity of expression and ideology.
Grunge made suburban kids able to access really cool shit they never would have come across otherwise, as experimentally expressive entertainment or philosophically. They could move to the city and reinvent themselves, or do it in their basements with less fear of getting their asses stomped on the way to the record store (which happened to me, again and again, in 1979).'' - Chris Estey

What Can Be Learned from Chuck Palahniuk?
A whole hell of a lot, actually. I’ve written about Chuck Palahniuk before on this blog. He’s an enormously talented writer who has had a profound impact on my personal and professional life. He just published a new book, Not Forever, But For Now, and is currently on what is sure to be one hell of a book tour. What can I say? I love the man. As a result, I subscribe to his Substack. Let me tell…

Do you have any recs for beginners who want to write poetry? I love your blog so much!
there's a list of starter poetry recommendations for reading poetry here. For writing poetry I would recommend essays and nonfiction by poets: Upstream by Mary Oliver, Still Life with Lemons by Mark Doty, Now and Then: The Poet's Choice Columns by Robert Hass. If there are specific poets you like and admire, I would read their interviews to see how they themselves approach poetry and writing. I would also subscribe to Devin Kelly's Ordinary Plots substack, Padraig Ó'Tuama's Poetry Unbound (substack and podcast), and the On Being podcast's interviews with poets. There's also this section on The Poetry Society of America which features poets and writers interacting with either their own work, other's work, or simply discussing different aspects of writing and experiencing poetry.
I would also recommend really familiarising yourself with the technical aspects of poetry: poetic structures, rhyming schemes, language and all its textures etc., because those are the essential building blocks more than anything else. Practice writing poems following established formats: try your hand at an abcderian poem, or a sonnet, or a tanka, or a villanelle--the structural limitations are a good way to force yourself to really think about what you want to say and how you want to say it.
At the end of the day, the most important thing if you want to write is to read widely, and read often--and practice and practice and practice again. Learning to write anything is like training a muscle and you have to train and work it consistently. Hope this helps and best of luck with your writing endeavours anon 🤍

To all the female journalists hoping to score a big interview with Jameela Jamil, I regret to inform you that that ship has sailed. The actress-podcaster-presenter bid au revoir to women reporters in an extraordinarily long Substack post titled, “I think I’m done with being interviewed by women.” According to Jamil, her “trust has been broken” following a recent profile of her in the Sunday Timesby Liz Edwards that she thought “read like a cheap, bitchy, Daily Mail blog, written by a student desperate to get clicks to keep their job.”
Jamil, who is now perhaps more well-known as a vocal, body-positive feminist than as an actor, wrote that of the “hundreds of women” who have interviewed her over the course of her 17-year career, only three of them have written about her fairly. “The others turned up with a preconceived idea of who I was, having never met me, or even known anyone who knows me,” Jamil wrote, unknowingly describing the majority of all journalist–celebrity interactions. These women apparently came to Jamil with “an angle,” which was not “designed to actually uplift the audience, but to instead tear down or embarrass the woman trying and hoping to uplift the audience.” The issue here might be that Jamil is one of the few people in the world who clicks on a celebrity profile hoping to be “uplifted” by the opinions of a famous person.
To her credit, the offending Sunday Times profile does not paint Jamil in an amazing light. It has a headline meant to generate attention (“Jameela Jamil: ‘I stood up for Meghan long before I met her’”) and opens by rehashing some of her wildest tweets (which she did, in fact, write of her own free will). The story then lists all of the various medical issues she’s said she’s endured throughout her life, and when asked about the claims that she might have fabricated some of them in order to clarify, Jamil dodged, saying, “Foolishness is something we should discourage in the media.” It’s not until almost the end of the profile that you realize what she’s even promoting, an upcoming Pixar movie and a new podcast in which she and her guests discuss embarrassing moments.
Jamil’s argument is that when she is interviewed by women, they ask her to prove herself. “They want to interview me about feminism they say, but they rarely explore my actual thoughts and ideas about our collective experience, but more seek to interrogate my character, why I have a right to speak when I have privilege, why I care, hyper fixate on my fairly innocuous mistakes compared to most men in my industry, and force me to justify why anyone should take me seriously,” she wrote. She is upset that despite all of her “frankly prominent” work advocating for women, writers of her very same gender have the gall to drudge up her past and situate her within the context of her own past.
“I hate to say it, but male journalists have always given me a fair shot,” Jamil wrote. “Men do seem at large more interested in actually exploring and challenging my ideas, rather than demanding my credibility to have ideas in the first place.”
To all the young women currently in J-school, don’t worry! Jamil, who herself interviews people on her podcasts, has figured it out for you — she’s willing to share her wisdom. “As an interviewer I start with where someone is at now, how they arrived there, including the hairy moments, and then I end on what positive thing they have recycled that into that will nourish or help my audience,” she wrote, echoing David Frost, I believe. “I don’t just try to embarrass them, and guide the audience to start thinking of them as insufferable and then try to flimsily pull them back in with strategically unrelatable throw away lines and quips.”
Jamil goes on to say that when men are interviewed, they are not subjected to any scrutiny at all. “We don’t seek to humble or embarrass them from the jump. We don’t open articles with paragraph upon paragraph of their controversies. Even if there are illegal/violent allegations made about them.” This is, according to her, a problem that goes all the way back to Adam and Eve. “ADAM WAS A GROWN MAN WITH HAIR ON HIS BALLS WHO ATE THAT FUCKING APPLE,” she wrote, “STOP EMASCULATING ADAM. DAMN.”
Right on, sister. Jamil wraps up by saying that she will “never stop trying to uplift women.” That is, of course, unless they’re a bitch with a recorder. “I sometimes, more charitably wonder if female journalists hyper focus on my mistakes and flaws because they’re so constricted by their own, or fear of making some, that they can’t believe I dare still stand after breaking the rule of being perfect, liked, believed and approved of by everyone.” Ugh, damn, she got us.
Jamil is actually too self-actualized for all those pea-brained women journalists, who are mostly jealous of how free she is. It’s not that they think it’s funny that she once said she hoped her fellow celebs shit themselves from drinking detox tea, or that they’re trying to examine the self-aggrandizing and abrasive version of feminism she’s peddling.
In the comments of her post, Jamil provided a brief follow-up. “For whatever it’s worth. We contacted her,” she wrote, referring to Edwards, “Told her how I felt. No apology, no retraction. No action. Humanity is worth less than clicks bait [sic] I guess.” She may not want to talk to female journalists anymore, but maybe she could consider a female editor?

Hey there lovelies. Gosh, it's been a long week. I'm so sorry it's taking so long for me to catch up on things. Things continue to be chaotic here, and I wish I was out there honking with you. You all have been doing such a great job, and I hope that you're getting some of the fun energy going around. This is a quick one tonight since I'm so behind, but I want you to know I'm thinking of you, and wanted to remind you to take some time for yourself. A dear friend reminded me of this today (and so many of you have lately, sorry I forget to respond to messages) and it really is important. Some people spend their whole day taking care of others, and it's easy to forget to take care of yourself. Please go take a shower, drink some water, eat something good, and just spend some time doing something you love. Be well lovelies, take care of yourselves <3

ON THIS DAY ... in 1981 - TOYAH. 21 photos from a 1981 interview at https://mickmercer.substack.com/ - subscribe for free or click 'no thanks' and in you go!
Although she started in Punk (Jubilee/Maneaters) and later found pop success it was her proto-Goth records that resonate the most. With unusually atmospheric, pulsating live shows it was here you saw a lot of the people that became the original Goth audience, attracted by both the music and the lyrical imagery. (If you’ve never tried either “Sheep Farming In Barnet” or “The Blue Meaning” albums I recommend both, especially the recent Cherry Red re-issues.) She also happened to be a great interviewee, always making time, whether for a fanzine or music paper, even when clearly knackered. Never boring, never bored.

Hi Sophie. I enjoy reading your longer Tumblr posts. It's been a while since I've read a leftwing essayist whose work has really grabbed me. Any recommendations for modern leftwing essayists whose work is worth reading? (articles, columns, editorials, online magazines, etc.)
Honestly most of my work (and long tumblr posts, which I suppose are still work kind of lmao patreon dot com slash sophie from mars) is informed by books and those tend to be older, like I wanted to say bell hooks for a second now and then I remembered that she died in 2021 (rip). Maybe it's just that there's so much good theory to get through that's already stood the test of time, but I appreciate the question so as much as I'm currently enjoying Kierkegaard's the Sickness Unto Death i know it's not what you're asking for in like 6 diffferent ways.
The problem with recommending contemporary stuff is that you can never recommend anything in gestalt and i wouldn't expect people to recommend me as always totally good either but I hope that's understood. I'm subscribed to Organise! magazine and I think they regularly publish really sound political analysis. If you are interested in books, I had Half-Earth Socialism on preorder and I've been enjoying that since it came out. Not writing, but I think the Seriously Wrong Podcast boys are the best ones doing it right now, their stuff is very well researched, written and argued and delivered in a fun and humorous style as well.
I like a lot of feminist authors at the moment. It was feminism that brought me to the left in the first place and I've basically always said that marxism (or equally anarchism) without a feminist lens is essentially useless. I think that feminists have been leading the charge in properly analysing and understanding systematic and structural violence and oppression for a long time, especially trans feminists like Julia Serano or black feminists like, again, bell hooks. but since your question is about contemporary writers who write articles / essays etc, I really like Amia Srinivasan (her essay collection The Right To Sex is utterly astonishing), Catherine Angel (Tomorrow Sex Will Be Good Again is a book that changed my life), Kai Cheng Thom (her substack is great and her book I Hope We Choose Love is fantastic too). I also quite like Clementine Morrigan, her articles explore quite uncomfortable conversations about anti-carceral approaches to social justice and trauma, and her podcast is actually where I heard an interview with Catherine Angel which is why I ended up buying her book.
I know you didn't ask for books but I can't let a recommendations post go by at the moment without talking about Abolition Revolution by Shanice Octavia McBean and Aviah Sarah Day because it is simply occupying SO much of my brain at the moment
thanks for the question

The sad tale of Meghan's ex-dog Bogart by u/SecondhandCoke
The sad tale of Meghan's ex-dog Bogart I did a couple of episodes about Guy and Bogart on my channel, but I just wrote this up in a comment and thought maybe others would be interested in this story. The source for this are rumors that were shared with me, but which I was able to partially confirm through Tom Bower's book, and Sally Bedell Smith's Substack. (If you don't know who Bedell Smith is, keep reading and to quote Neal Sean, "'as ever,' I'll explain.")So, Bogart was the dog Meghan abandoned in Canada when she moved to the UK. She laughingly said she was leaving Bogart in the engagement interview. In the interview, Harry objects and she shuts him down immediately. He pouts and looks concerned afterwards. Back to Bogart. Bogart's brother and cagemate at the adoption center was Otto who was adopted by the son of Sally Bedell Smith a few days before Meghan adopted Bogart. Smith is also a prominent Royal biographer and contributing editor to Vanity Fair. So Meghan adopts a dog who is brother to the grand dog of the writer of Royal biographies that Meghan had likely read (given that her friends said she was obsessed with the RF in her adolescence,) and who worked for one of her dream magazines, Vanity Fair? Coincidence? You decide. Well, not long after she adopts the dog, she reaches out to the owner of Otto. Again Otto's owner was David, Sally Bedell Smith's son. Meghan said she'd adopted Otto's brother, and wouldn't it be cool to meet up and get the dog brothers together? They meet up at a dog park in LA and the brothers seem to recognize each other. They have a great time jumping around and playing together. Meghan, of course, posts it all on Instagram, and probably the Tig as well. I guess Meghan realized that Bogart wasn't going to get access to David's mom? Bogart therefore is no longer of use to Markle.Fast forward to Meghan having met Harry. Contrary to what Tom Bower reports, rumors I've heard report that Harry and Bogart had a close relationship. If you watch the engagement interview, Harry is visibly upset when MM shutdown his objection that Bogart still come to the UK.Meanwhile, in LA, David texts MM (whom he had not seen since the dog park meeting) that he'd seen she was leaving Bogart and that he would be happy to take Bogart so that he and his brother Otto could spend the rest of their years together. His text was read.
