John making the Thunderbolts Lemar’s favorite dinner when he’s fully accepted that they’re now family and that he would do anything for all of them and he couldn’t bring himself to cook it before because it hurt so badly, but once he realizes that he can do it again because he let himself love these people, it’s like a weight is lifted off of him and he’s lighting up like a christmas tree like he used to all those years ago.

Like Yelena’s teasing him one day and she’s like “Why don’t you make us your favorite dinner tonight, I wanna know what it is?” and him laughing it off and oops, all of a sudden, holy shit, he can actually make it again without it hurting so badly that he has to stop??? Because Yelena asked him to make it and he loves her like he loved Lemar??? He loves the entire team so much and he’s finally stopped trying to deny it???

I have many feelings TM about how Lemar haunts the narrative but in such a gentle and loving and painful and happy way.

“The bad news,” Tim said, “is that you’ve probably been avoiding the whole retirement fund thing because you’ve consciously or subconsciously realized that you aren’t financially solvent enough to do it. The good news is that there are a lot of ways to diversify your revenue streams.”

“Branding,” Tim agreed. “Who does your marketing?” 

“Two high-schoolers, a PTA mom, and Velma at the senior center.” 

“Nice range of demographics.” Tim nodded approvingly. “We’re gonna do a line of merch—Red Hood t-shirts, water bottles, gas masks—but we should start other efforts at the same time. How do you feel about short-term investments? Crime Alley has a lot of small businesses, right?” 

“Uh, yeah?” Jason said. “Franchises never make it there.” 

“So, the laundromat could probably use a new washer,” Tim said. “Summer is coming up; one of the bodegas could probably use a slurpee machine. And one of the food trucks could probably stand to upgrade its fryer capacity. Do it like Shark Tank. People can come up with their own upgrade proposal and show you that they’re a responsible investment, and then they’ll have ownership of the idea instead of having Red Hood come down from his throne of duffle bags full of heads to ask if they need better lighting for their OnlyFans.” 

Jason opened his mouth, closed it again. “You want me to do Crime Alley Shark Tank.” 

“I want two of your lieutenants and two well-respected community members to do Crime Alley Shark Tank,” Tim corrected. “You’re a wanted felon and people’s attempts to kill you would be distracting. You can be a guest judge on the finale.”

SOTR SPOILERS//

I am even more fascinated by the Katniss and Haymitch parallels after SOTR honestly. Because their inherent natures are SO similar and yet those natures manifest in very different ways in their stories under their different circumstances.

On the one hand you have Haymitch, whose Pa dies but who still has a very present mother, who doesn't have the same kind of strains or responsibilities weighing down his childhood like Katniss does. He has to take out the tesserae for his family, yes, but otherwise he leads a very social life full of friends and family and neighbors and his beloved girlfriend, all of whom care about and love him. Katniss, though, is denied both her father and her mother, and has to grow up so quickly so young that she isolates herself and shuts herself down basically from the beginning. Few friends. Withdrawn. Too serious for her age. The music gone out of her life. The way Haymitch gets only after his Games are over.

And then you factor in how this affects their motivations and strategies in the games. Katniss prioritizes her own survival because she has no choice but to. Her family desperately needs her. Whereas Haymitch can be satisfied just dying in a way that will leave his family proud of him. So, he has less inhibitions holding him back, openly takes on a protective role for the other tributes, similar to the protective instincts Katniss has to work hard to deliberately suppress in herself in order to forge ahead towards her own survival. 16 yr old Haymitch can openly pursue rebellion to an extent 16 yr old Katniss couldn't even possibly fathom. They both have the right instincts and decent, kind hearts and can be reckless and care so deeply about other people and contain the kindling for the spark. For a time though, they both end up sort of stuck in the same place, having to lock up the best parts of themselves to protect it from the world in order to just carry on.

And then you have Haymitch's relationships with Katniss' parents, too. How they tried to help him and he blocked them both out. It was so heartbreaking when Burdock leads Haymitch to Lenore Dove's grave and Haymitch thinks of how Burdock will never forgive him for what he's done. And it's true in this world, because Burdock dies well before Haymitch saves Katniss. Then you have Haymitch and Astrid, still left alive. I now so wish we'd gotten to see more moments between them (it's pretty much just the one very brief exchange when Gale gets whipped), because I have to think they have a quiet sort of understanding and forgiveness between them now. Two people who both let Burdock down because of the enormity of their grief. Haymitch, who tossed him to the curb with violence, and Astrid, who couldn't be a real parent to their daughters without him.

And then there's all three of them merged together in Katniss, who gets to be the one to carry the best parts of all of them forward. ahhh.

Hey, so do you ever stop to think about how the premise of Lord of the Rings being an in-universe book written by some of the characters who lived through that story means that they decided what parts and perspectives to use to tell that story...?

And when our authors weren't there to experience the events themselves, they have to rely on what they're told about them by the characters who were there, right...?

Okay so stop and think about the Glittering Caves.

We never actually go to the caves in the narrative. Tolkien LOVES describing nature and natural beauty, but we don't actually see the caves described "by him" the way we do other places. Obviously Gimli's words are Tolkien's, yes; but we only see the caves filtered through his words about them, after the fact.

When Gimli and Éomer and the other Rohirrim take refuge there, the narrative doesn't follow them. Obviously from a narrative standpoint this is to keep the focus narrow, and not to interrupt the battle-sequence with a long ode to the beauty of the caves, and to create tension in the reader who doesn't know if these characters are okay or not. Which all makes sense!

But think about it in terms of the book that was written in Middle-earth by the folk living there. Why DON'T we get to have a direct experience of those caves? Gimli obviously related several other parts of the story that none of the Hobbits were there to witness to them, and which were written into the books as Direct Events Happening In The Narrative (think of the Paths of the Dead scene, for one of the more visceral moments!). So why not the Glittering Caves?

Was it because they wanted to keep that narrative focus and tension, and so they didn't include his perspective on that part of the battle? Perhaps, that's certainly a possibility to consider.

But also consider: when we do hear about the Glittering Caves, what we hear is Gimli telling Legolas about the Glittering Caves. THAT is the part of that event that is considered of importance to include in the book: not Gimli's actual experience when he was in them, but rather the part where he relates that experience TO Legolas.

And I kind of just THOUGHT about that today.
