At first, he finds it exasperating until he realizes how refreshingly natural you are. No filters, no tech addiction, no social media dependence.

He starts calling you his “timeless darling,” and he adores how you prefer letters to texts. Vil even plan a classic-style photoshoot: vintage clothes, candlelight. It goes viral.

He won’t admit it, but he’s charmed by your innocence.

AO3 Data Scraped for AI Training Dataset

What is happening, and what you can do. Check for potential edits with additions at the end of the post!

What is happening? What do we know?

A user going by "nyuuzyou" on the HuggingFace platform uploaded a dataset a few days ago - containing scraped content from AO3. HuggingFace is a very popular platform and widely used for sharing machine learning and AI models/datasets. The scraped dataset includes fics, fanart, and other fanworks - all taken without permission and intended for use in training gen AI models. You can find more information in this Reddit post.

This dataset is one of several compiled from various websites—at least seven in total. While two datasets have been removed, the AO3 one was only disabled on HuggingFace. This means that it’s not downloadable at the moment but still visible. It may also return if takedown efforts end up being challenged/reversed by that user.

Key Details

Scope: On AO3, all content with work IDs between 1 and 63,200,000 has been targeted. The work ID is the number at the end of a work's URL — for example, in https://archiveofourown.org/works/12345678, 12345678 is the work ID. You can find it by simply opening the work and checking the URL in your browser’s address bar. So, if your work falls in that range and is publicly accessible (i.e., not locked and open to everyone, including guests), it’s mostly likely included in the dataset. This dataset is currently disabled on HuggingFace, but that doesn't mean it's gone. It's only a temporary takedown as of now.

Takedown notices have been issued, but this user has also uploaded the dataset to other sites after backlash and partial removal.

There are talks in the discussion forums of potentially moving this dataset to Telegram, torrents, and/or other private channels.

What can you do?

Should the dataset return again and you see that your work was affected: file your own DMCA or copyright takedown notice. The uploader, in their own words, "has not agreed to take down the entire repo. At this time, the scraper has agreed with taking down art from the person who owns the copyright. That means each of you will need to request a takedown."

Instructions and a sample CSV template to list your work IDs for removal are provided in this guide. You can find more details in this announcement by PaperDemon.

Lock your works! It would limit visibility to registered users only, and is a very good step to prevent scraping or unauthorized use. To lock all your works on AO3, go to “My Works,” click “Edit Works,” and select all. Then click “Edit” and check the box labeled “Only show to registered users.” Scroll down and click “Update All Works” to apply the change.

This user has so far shown no signs of stopping and is continuing to redistribute the data across multiple sites, even after numerous takedown requests (read more here). So, we can only recommend to be cautious and beware, lock your works, feel free to make use of takedown notices if you're unfortunately affected, and spread the word to fellow creators.

A pro-Israel “surveillance network” that has offered bounties for information on pro-Palestinian protesters is establishing a foothold in Australia and claims to have secured meetings with key federal politicians, leaked messages show.

Shirion Collective, which has largely focused on the US and UK, boasts of its ability to scrape digital fingerprints to “aggressively track and expose antisemites”. It is one of a number of groups that have gained prominence on social media during the Israel-Gaza war, publicly naming individuals it accuses of being antisemitic.

Shirion Collective claims it has an AI tool called Maccabee which can identify and track targets.

In one post on X, Shirion outlines a scenario in which the tool creates and releases deepfake videos – falsified content that looks and sounds genuine – to embarrass individuals who take down posters picturing Israeli hostages.

On its X account, Shirion Collective has claimed to offer bounties of US$500 for information on people in videos. In a December post it claimed it would pay up to US$15,000 for “crucial insights” about politicians, US$7,500 for medical doctors and US$250 for students.

Leaked screenshots of Shirion’s Telegram channel, shared with Guardian Australia by the White Rose Society, an anti-fascist researchgroup, show Shirion has become active in Australia, with participants identifying potential targets and boasting of attempts to meet the home affairs minister, Clare O’Neil, and the shadow home affairs minister, James Paterson.

Anonymised Shirion members discussed presenting O’Neil and Paterson with a list of names to ensure they were “brought to justice according to the rule of law”.

“Need help. We managed to get into home affairs calendar, need to come prepared with people with hate speech and names that the government didn’t held [sic] accountable,” one anonymous user said.

“Meeting with Clair [sic] or her stuff [sic] … we also have a meeting with the shadow minister.”

Both O’Neil and Paterson’s offices said they had not met anyone who identified themselves as part of Shirion Collective.

The leaked texts show people on the Shirion channel discussed adding the names of individuals to a “watch list” and mass reporting posts on social media.

Some Australians whose social media accounts were linkedin the channel had shared antisemitic, racist and conspiracy theory content on social media. Others were pro-Palestinian activists who do not appear to have posted or shared antisemitic content.

When contacted via its social media accounts, a Shirion member describing themself as the “social media guy” said the “Ai is a quiet project with an internal team”.

The Shirion member said “bounties were for info and was in the USA not Australia”. The member said Shirion’s Telegram channel was open.

“The telegram [sic] is open and we do a soft verification that people are real. But freedom of speech is welcome there,” the Shirion member said.

The member said they would refer Guardian Australia’s questions to a “commander” but no further response was received.

Shirion Collective is one of several groups that say they track and fight antisemitism, largely through identifying individuals online.

Canary Mission, which has been operating since at least 2015, maintains lists of students, professors and other individuals on its website who it claims “promote hatred of the USA, Israel and Jews”. Another prominent account on X, StopAntisemitism, shares the names and employers or academic institutions of individuals, and often directs its more than 298,000 followers where to make complaints.

The leaked posts from the Shirion Collective Telegram channel point to some publicly available material its contributors regard as antisemitic, but also discuss creating “infiltrator” accounts to view and share material from private Instagram accounts.

In the leaked posts seen by Guardian Australia, contributors do not reveal personally identifiable information about any individual that is not publicly available.

The Shirion Collective account on X/Twitter has identified people it alleges have posted antisemitic material, or statements in support of Hamas, and tagged in their employer or academic institution in the case of students.

Naming someone online is not necessarily illegal, but Michael Bradley, a managing partner at Marque Lawyers, warned there were potential implications depending on the nature of the claims, such as harassment and intimidation or even racial vilification.

“Using social media as a mechanism for coalescing groups that want to engage in doxing activity, it’s obviously extremely powerful,” he said.

Last month, a Sydney resident named Theo had a picture of his house and his street address posted to a Facebook group.

Theo, who asked that his surname not be used, had raised a Palestinian flag and placed a blackboard with messages critical of Israel in front of his Botany home.

Less than two weeks later, a ​​jerry can with rags stuffed into it, a disposable lighter and large bolts were placed on the bonnet of his car with a message that read: “Enough! Take down flag! One chance!!!!”

The incident prompted the deployment of the bomb squad and local police.

Ok, security and anonymity are not the same thing, but when you combine them you can enhance your online privacy.

My question is: how tech literate are you and what is your aim? As in do you live in a country where your government would benefit from monitoring private (political) conversations or do you just want to degoogle? Because the latter is much easier for the average user.

Some general advice:

Leave Windows and Mac operating systems and switch to Linux distributions like Fedora and Ubuntu (both very user friendly). Switch from Microsoft Office or Pages/Numbers/Keynote (Mac) to LibreOffice.

You want to go more hardcore with a very privacy-focused operating system? There are Whonix and Tails (portable operating system).

Try to replace all your closed source apps with open source ones.

Now, when it comes to browsers, leave Chrome behind. Switch to Firefox (or Firefox Focus if you're on mobile). Want to go a step further? Use LibreWolf (a modified version of Firefox that increases protection against tracking), Brave (good for beginners but it has its controversies), DuckDuckGo or Bromite. You like ecofriendly alternatives? Check Ecosia out.

Are you, like, a journalist or political activist? Then you probably know Tor and other anonymous networks like i2p, freenet, Lokinet, Retroshare, IPFS and GNUnet.

For whistleblowers there are tools like SecureDrop (requires Tor), GlobaLeaks (alternative to SecureDrop), Haven (Android) and OnionShare.

In November 2023, the Russian Supreme Court ruled to ban the “international LGBT movement” as an “extremist organization” — despite the fact that no such formal entity exists. Soon after the decision was passed, Russian security forces began conducting violent searches of private parties. In February alone, the authorities have raided parties, forcing attendees to lie face-down on the floor and asking them if they belong to the LGBTQ community, at least three times. In some cases, party guests were beaten. Journalists from the outlet Mediazona spoke to attendees of these events about what happened. Meduza summarizes their reporting in English.

On February 21, the Russian TV network REN TV aired a segment about how security officials had raided a cottage in the town of Koltushi near St. Petersburg. According to the newscaster, the agents “shut down a provocative party” after finding “several dozen young people who couldn’t immediately name their own gender.” The report also said that items with “symbols of the LGBT movement, which is banned in Russia,” were found on the premises. Footage included in the segment showed about 10 people lying on the floor with their hands behind their heads. It also showed police interrogating people arrested at the party, asking questions such as “Do you consider yourself part of the LGBT movement?” and “Are you a boy or a girl?”

One of the attendees who spoke to Mediazona said that there were 16 people at the party and that they had gathered to celebrate a friend’s birthday. According to the source, the police burst into the cottage early in the morning on February 18 and forced everyone to lie on the floor. The officers lifted attendees up “by the hair and by the neck” before interrogating them on camera, according to the source, and the attendees ultimately spent five hours lying on the floor.

They made disgusting jokes, calling us obscene words, idiots, that kind of thing, and saying they wished we would die. They walked around asking each person, “Are you a boy or a girl?” And if they weren’t sure about somebody’s sex, they would send them to an investigator, where they were forced to show their body parts. They asked one girl to lift her skirt and tighten her leggings. My friend had to show scars from [surgery]. The whole time they were asking questions like, “Oh, where’s your penis? Where did you put it?”

That same day, law enforcement officials also raided a party that was dedicated to “openness and sexuality” at a cultural center in the city of Tula. According to the Telegram channel Ostorozhno, Novosti, police made some of the attendees go outside, where they proceeded to beat them. A video published by the channel shows a man who is reportedly a plainclothes officer beating a person lying in the snow. “Who are you talking to like that, you piece of shit?” the attacker says.

Another video published by the channel shows security officials bursting into a building and shouting, “Everybody on the floor!” and “Come here, you son of a bitch!”

One attendee described the raid to Mediazona:

They beat them, including people lying on the ground, with fists to their face, and kicked them. They interrogated them, while filming what was happening. They stripped them naked and made them squat, do push-ups, and sing the city anthem of Tula. They threw them face-down in the dirt, tased them, and poured water on them. The officers forced everyone to state their full name and educational institution, if they were studying, on a recording. They searched everyone and took photos of everyone’s passports, and they were constantly shouting about ‘LGBT.’

The person also said the party was “small” and that it “wasn’t positioned as an LGBT gathering.”

According to the local news outlet Tula Press, several people who attended the event were charged with spreading “LGBT propaganda.”

Another party was shut down by the authorities on February 9, but the raid wasn’t reported publicly until February 20, when an article titled “Activity of large LGBT community curbed in Petrozavodsk” appeared on a local news site in Russia’s Republic of Karelia. The report says that a “female resident of Petrozavodsk is suspected of organizing a community united by affiliation with LGBT culture” and that only “known representatives of the LGBT community” were allowed into the party: “The shocking list includes both men and women. It includes both married and divorced people. It also includes mothers, including some with three children.”

Additionally, on February 4, police raided a club in Yekaterinburg that was hosting a BDSM party called Blue Velvet. Only guests who purchased tickets in advance were allowed to attend the event, and a password was required for entry. The authorities said the raid was carried out for the purpose of “stabilizing the operational situation” in the city.

Have you ever wondered why the work of Russian artists is very easy to define. So much so that there is a concept of “Russian style” on the internet?

Then it's time to learn my theory on how the “Russian style” was formed, since I've been in the Russian community of artists for about 11 years and 6 years in the foreign one and I have a lot to say.

If you're too lazy to read, I'll keep it short: it's all because of harsh criticism and harassment in the past, a language barrier where most people don't know English (or any other popular language), own methods of learning to draw, and more. However, if you want to understand more about what it all means, read my story below.

I'll probably start by saying that the peak of artistic progress started around 2013-2018. Previously, most artists sat on a social network called Vk\Vkontakte. I can't say anything for sure about whether there was any development before 2010+, since most of the artists I meet on the internet are mostly my colleagues who were born between 2002 and 2007 :D. Many of the Russian artists came to the Internet being children 8-14 years old. (back then not many adults were mostly advanced with the understanding of the Internet, so parental control was simply excluded from the rules) + the Internet itself was very free. Mix the fact of having a free internet + having kids on it and you get a very aggressive environment. That's terrible!!!”. In general, the Internet of the past was very aggressive, which means that many of us had to develop as “fast” as possible in artistic terms, otherwise you could get into the “wall of shame” (in the past a public called dno-arts or for example in Fairies in Vkontakte, as it used to be called). However, because of that, by the way, some of us have a fear of showing our work in public, lol (at least I still have a fear of drawing human characters because of that) But by 2017, things started to change. Many of us at that point grew up and rebelled against all those “walls of shame” and as a consequence, they were completely destroyed and at that point a new stage of Russian artists started to emerge. This gave more opportunities for creativity, as idiotic rules like “you can't use very bright colors in art” were eliminated and no one cared anymore. However, by about 2020, a new era of development of Russian artists' work began because of tiktok and the deterioration of Vkontakte's policy. Many of the artists went partially or permanently to telegram after 2020. Before that, the foreign community (English-speaking internet let's say roughly) was closed to us and not everyone could afford to venture out into the English-speaking internet. In general, because of the language barrier it is still closed to many of us :D. A huge number of Russian artists are still hiding somewhere in the dark corners of the Internet. With the advent of tiktok and telegram also began to appear “new” generation of Russian artists. Basically, as I personally noticed - these artists are not afraid of criticism and tend to show themselves more in public. Also many of these artists began to lose their “Russian style” and began to have rather more of a “general” style (in general, despite what I consider to be an older generation of artists (?), my style seems to have lost my “Russian handwriting” and become general? I don't know). By common, I mean that most Russian artists started mixing anime\cartoonish\semi realism style with their usual style. Although the English-speaking internet was open to us after 2010, few people dared to start their creative accounts on the English-speaking internet. But after 2020, the information for us became much wider than before. As it seems to me personally, the development of Russian artists is now centered not only in their closed environment, but also in the environment of the open world. But it is precisely because of the closed nature of the artistic Russian community that we have developed a so-called “Russian style” that is visible in one way or another in our art (lol, even I can easily tell if someone is Russian by their art) I have a lot more to say about how the Russian community of artists is developing now according to my observations. But I'll tell you about it some other time.

If anything, it's not the most reliable source for how the Russian style came to be. It's just my personal observation based on what's been happening to me for 11 years. No one has done statistics and research on this and most of the data from the past has been destroyed

But I certainly made a special drawing to thank you for everything you have done for me in this Duck community of ours, that is, the community of fans of Donald Duck, comics, cartoons and video games. And not only on Tumblr, but also on Deviantart, Instagram, Discord, Telegram, Twitter (X) and other networks. And so I have already passed the 5th year and everything has changed since then. Unfortunately, I had a lot of difficulties and I drew very badly at the time, but over time I met many friends who changed my life quite a few times. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to do drawings especially for my friends, as well as for the birthday jubilees of Fethry Duck and Jose Carioca who celebrated their birthdays on August 2 and August 24, respectively, because for my own reasons I didn't have time to do it, which doesn't mean I won't in the future. Certainly if nothing else, I drew my favorite characters from the Duckverse (Donald Duck universe) combining Duck comics, Duck Avenger, Darkwing Duck, Ducktales, Quack Pack, Three Caballeros and Ze Carioca comics, in my own way in my own style. Yes, I drew them wearing modern clothes and outfits as I would imagine in my Quack Pack version, that is, in the Quack Pack AU. And since, as usual, not all the characters that I intended to leave have remained, I will leave them for a special drawing that will follow this one.

Certainly, there are Donald Duck, Jose Ze Carioca, Panchito Pistoles, Daisy Duck, Rosinha Maria Vaz, Drake Mallard, Morgana Macawber, Uno Ducklair (One), Fethry Duck, Gladstone Gander, Gus Goose, Della Duck, Queen Reginella, Huey, Dewey and Louie Duck, April, May and June Duck, Gosalyn Mallard, Phooey Duck, Zico and Zeca Carioca, Dugan Duck, Shamrock Gander, Bolivar the Dog (Donald's pet dog) and Dinkie or Trixie the Cat (Daisy's pet cat) and they are all together together. The children are teenagers, except for Shamrock and Dugan who are pre-teens and the rest are adults. Mostly the kids are holding a banner that says thank you to all of you who follow me and like to look at my drawings and like and reblog. I definitely thank everyone for this and without your support I wouldn't be doing this, although I do it as a hobby anyway since I really like drawing my favorite characters. I'll just say that I made a mistake with the markers and mislabeled Gosalyn's hand holding Dewey's baseball shirt, my mistake and if anyone asks who is between Louie and Dewey, it's Reginella from Topolino comics (Italian comics) queen of a planet that goes different from Earth and Donald accidentally met her at the bottom of the sea and ended up in her world and fell in love with her.
