The following is some 'ready made lore' for use with my TTRPG "Beta Maxx X", you can find the previous edition on Itch.io and a quick start on Exalted Funeral's website. The Ex-F version is the easiest paper copy you can get for Europe and the US (I'm in Australia so unless you love $30+ shipping costs, order there!). This section is about massive historical events that could be know around the galaxy, and could be used to help shape the level of dystopia or utopia in the game. Also note that these are written in the voice of unreliable narrators, which is deliberate to in-book dispel the idea that this is a 'Dry Dispassionate Historical Third Person Narrative'; these are going to be 'wrong' in the same way that what most people remember about Egypt, Rome, Ancient China, etc are probably wrong.
Historical Events
1312 Rebellion
The 1312 Rebellion was a heck of a thing, media from the time tells that after some brutal crackdowns by Pinnacle Corporation on Cephi-3 every existing worker union, all 1312 of them, on Cephi-3 joined together and staged a world-wide rebellion against the Corporation. They planned to destroy the corporate government, install a popular representative democracy, rewrite corporations law so that companies could only be owned by their own workers, and drastically reform the legal system as well. The Rebellion was successful in 27 days, and lasted for six years before Pinnacle helped fund and arm the Guild of Peacemakers to assassinate the entire leadership of the Rebellion, and begin a wider program of mass shootings of 1312 Members. It was another roughly eight years of terror after the assassinations began. Eventually, Pinnacle was able to reestablish the previous status quo and the Guild of Peacemakers became the police and military on Cephi-3. In the 400 years since, a number of 1312 Rebellions have appeared on different planets and some massive space stations; typically large corporations have immediately responded to a potential 1312 Rebellion with extensive propaganda, a high volume of targeted assassinations, and a large number of ‘disappearances’. 1312 is known to still be out there, and cells of 1312 members operate around the Galaxy. Their reading material has a tendency to appear in all sorts of strange corners of the Network, sometimes intrusively and other times buried in a ‘forgotten corner of some node’.
Arnaq 5
Arnaq 5 caused the founding of the Galactic Convention Against Technomagical Nuclear Weapons which is just bonkers considering the way nobody can get in the same room over standardising how you send plain text messages over the Galatic Network; how card can it be to unify 7,465 different written languages? Not trying. What happened? The Arnaq 5 War was brutal by every possible measure. The two largest corporations on Arnaq, Arnaq Industries and General Consolidated Arnaq, started one of their frequent minor turf wars over a small city in a remote corner of the planet but the unexpected happened. There was apparently an internal coup planned inside Arnaq Industries so when the Chair of Arnaq Industries left to meet with the President of Gen. Con. Arnaq a small fusion bomb had been smuggled into one of the vehicles and detonated destroying a building and killing most of the senior management of both corporations. The Managing Director of Innovation, Nillz J Browly, then seized Arnaq Industries and mobilised the corporation into a Total War posture. As the war became more intense, Browly decided to end the war as quickly as possible without caring about any consequence to the people or the planet of Arnaq. They ordered the use of the Polter-475, a massive fission bomb enhanced with extensive magic to stabilise a number of manufactured radioactive elements. While it was ostensibly launched at a battlefield, the blast radius and radiation radius were so large that a quarter of the third largest land mass on Arnaq was turned into a wasteland. Then the skeletons started appearing. These skeletons began walking out of the wasteland armed with blaster weapons (some worked and some did not) and into the nearby settlements indiscriminantly murdering regardless of their corporate affiliations. Slowly the wasteland expanded, behind the advance of the skeletons, and at that point the Convention was started, the planet of Arnaq abandoned, and some people speculate the Harvesters self-formed from the ruins left behind.

Film Noir AU 3
Tumblr media
The set lasted about 45 minutes, but by the time Kitty took her final bow and left the band to play alone for the rest of the night, it felt like I'd only been sitting in that booth for a few moments. I've never been the sentimental type who gets lost in music, but between the band and Kitty's voice, it was...well, almost magical. I'd asked for a glass of water while I waited. Maybe that Jun dame slipped a Chong in my drink.
Kitty finally made her way over to my table, looking like danger in that red number she was wearing, and if it don't beat all how she managed to make the satins and velvets of the booth look real just by sitting down in it.
"Quite a voice you got there," I said as she settled in. "Makes me wonder why you're only covering instead of headlining." Kitty just shrugged.
"I've never been one to want the limelight all the time, Detective Kaji," she said. She brought her long, chestnut curls over one shoulder and tilted her head, exposing her long graceful neck in a move I'm sure she's practiced. "Besides, it's my name on the joint. I figure that's all the notoriety I need."
"Perhaps," I said. I sat back in my seat and thought of what to say next. The band was still on stage, playing some haunting melody. Between the music and the smokey haze around the room, I felt like someone was trying to cast some sort of spell. It was a good thing I had a strict no drinking policy while I was on the job, or I might've found myself too ossified to do what I came to do.
"Ms. Arnaq," I said, taking a long breath in. "Are you sure this is where you want to have this conversation?" Kitty raised an eyebrow at me and her entirely too enticing ruby lips turned up into a small smile, as if I'd just told her some amusing anecdote.
"Not at all, Detective," she said. "I just thought it'd be rude to ask you to come all this way and not at least offer you something to eat." She looked at the empty table between us, and then back at me.
"I don't make a habit of eating on the job," I told her. She sighed and then stood up.
"Then I suppose we can continue this meeting in my office." Kitty lead me away from the main dining room and into a room backstage.
Kitty's office, like the rest of the joint, had the air of borrowed finery. The dim light made everything look as rich and supple as the woman who ran the place, but beneath the smell of fresh flowers and gin, there was a slight musty odor. Not altogether unpleasant, but clearly indicating that Kitty hadn't been the first to lay claim to the velvet seats and intricate rug. I took the guest chair in front of the wide, wooden desk. I expected Kitty to sit in the highbacked chair on the other side, but instead she perched on top of the desk itself and crossed her legs. Dame had a set of gams that make a lesser man spend his last coin to keep her in all the furs and silks she wanted.
"Well, Ms. Arnaq," I said after a moment. "Any ideas who might want to cause harm to your brother?"
"Ha!" Kitty gave an unladylike snort that made me like her better. "Who doesn't have it in for him? You see, my brother is...very well connected."
"I suppose being the mayor will do that," I said. Kitty's brow arched high into her hairline, but I'll give her credit. That was the only show of surprise on her face.
"I see you're very good at your job," she said.
"It's why I get paid so well," I smirked at her. "Clever idea changing your last name. It took me a bit of digging to figure out the connection between Mayor Sokka Imiq and Katara Arnaq the soju-joint owner." For a moment- just a moment- Kitty looked rattled she crossed her arms and rubbed her elbows.
"I go by my mother's maiden name, and my brother kept the family name," she told me. "We decided a long time ago that the fewer people who know we know each other the better. My brother...well, he's good for this city."
"And you?" I asked, leaning forward in my seat.
"I keep folks entertained," she said with a shrug. "The best of society has been in my establishment- not that you'd ever get them to admit to it. It gives those that are considered the worst the opportunity to plead their cases without the complications of law getting too involved."
"I see," I said. "And being the mayor, your brother is..."
"He has necessarily kept his distance," Kitty said. "But he's more or less turned a blind eye to what I'm doing. I'm one of the few joints that hasn't been raided. My brother knows what I do is ultimately beneficial to his cause."
"And that cause is?" I was definitely intrigued. Kitty leaned forward, closing some of the distance I'd left.
"An end to the mob's hold on the city."

Awww, I love how Bianca looks so proud of her daughters. And also that Arnaq enjoys watching the Kotoan dance.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile poor Arya and Ursula look bored as hell. Maybe this means dancing isn't a big part of Ingvarran and Pittsfordian culture. Or, despite the alliance between Koto and Ingvarr, Arya probably doesn't have a ton of respect or care for the nuances of Kotoan culture.

Do you listen to any gothic music, and if so, do you have any opinions on which characteristics make music feel "gothic"?
Okay so!! As I said, this ask has absolutely been haunting me since I got it.  Basically, there are four main categories of music that I associate with a kind of “gothic americana” aesthetic, so I’ll break them down, provide a few examples of each, and try to explain what about them feels “gothic.”
1) This post (just reblogged) is my ultimate  ‘gothic americana’ sound. “Turn the Page” is probably my ultimate kind of lonely road trip song to begin with, and the desert sounds on top of it really create an atmosphere to me. The Metallica cover is really great, and if I were to try to create a soundscape with that, I would think of it being played on a hissy old cassette player in a beaten up old truck, interrupted by the thump thump thump of the windshield wipers.
To that end, I think of a lot of “cassette era” classic rock as gothic americana, especially if it’s the kind of thing we used to have in our old tape deck in our 1989 4Runner. There’s a very specific aesthetic that’s just “Refugee” or “Like a Hurricane” blasting from your car speakers as you drive through sagebrush country.
2) The second category is folk music, pretty variable depending on the region. I’m a huge fan of bluegrass, generally the slower and/or minor key songs. “Jerusalem Ridge” is a good example of one of these as is “The Crime I Didn’t Do.” Slightly less traditional, but the intro sequence to True Detective season 1 ( “Far from Any Road” by the Handsome Family) is one of my favorite pairings of sound and images every created.
The recent sea shanty popularity is also very much up my alley, I’ve always liked David Coffin as peak New England gothic (there was an NPR piece about him a few years ago, which is how I learned about him).
This isn’t American, but I’m extremely interested in all music that combines traditional folk elements with more modern pop/rock instrumentation or technology, and one of these artists is Elisapie, an Inuk singer-songwriter. Check out her song Arnaq.
3) This is very specific and I’m not sure quite how to define it, but a lot of what appeals to me about gothic americana in general and this blog overall is the idea of regional distinctions and distinctive cultures tied to locations, and part of that for me are songs that everyone in a certain city knows. A lot of these have to do with sports (Chelsea Dagger, Sweet Caroline, Dirty Water, Beer Barrel Polka, etc.) or are just local bands that are bigger in their hometowns than anywhere else. The feeling of everyone around you being overcome and singing along from somewhere instinctive is just.... if not gothic overall, definitely “[city/town/state] gothic.”
This isn’t exactly what I’m describing, but the absolute joy in Bill Janovitz’s voice here when he shouts “Dude, I’m playing in Fenway Park with Pearl Jam!” is infectious. It’s also why Bruce playing at Meadowlands is just a different vibe than when he plays CBP or Foxborough or anywhere else. I feel like this is the hardest of the categories to describe, but there’s a very specific emotion that I get about oh, this is a hometown song, and that’s a kind of gothic.
4) Finally, there are just a lot of songs that happen to click with me for certain atmospheres. Usually they’re sad or dark or mournful in certain ways, and the lyrics evoke the general aesthetic enough for them to just stick in my head. I’ve said this before, but “Lightning and Snow” by Woods of Ypres is just my go-to music for snowy winter nights in the north woods. There’s absolutely nothing in the world as good as driving through Superior National Forest at 5am listening to that album and watching moonset.
A few others are “Rain on the Scarecrow” for central Illinois in the early spring, “Film Noir” for sunset in Michigan in August, and “High Tide Rising” for flash thunderstorms over the North Dakota prairies. Yes, I did get that one from Welcome to Nightvale.

Tumblr media
288 pages, published 2014
Original language: Greenlandic

In a collection of blurry nights and bleary mornings after, Greenlandic author Niviaq Korneliussen weaves together the coming of age of five young people in the city of Nuuk. Fia has recently sworn off men only to discover that the woman she wants is unavailable. Her brother Inuk is forced to escape Greenland after being implicated in a political scandal. Arnaq struggles to cope with her past as her hard-partying life spirals out of control. Meanwhile, Ivik and Sara must confront an important transition in their relationship.   With vibrant imagery and daring prose, Korneliussen creates a Greenlandic literature unlike any we have known before—young, urbane, stream-of-consciousness, studded with textspeak and delirious with nightlife. I re-read all of TAOB for the fourth time because I thought it was fitting to do so before "The Chapter"
but I ended up making a bunch of lists for all the characters including nicknames, appearances, personalities, etc. It turns out you did give lots of character descriptions, but you had them in unexpected spots so some of them are super hard to find and remember, and they're also super easy to skip over if you aren't reading carefully lmao.
then I made a list of foreshadowing quotes, another of my favorite quotes, and a tally of how many times the word "brood" or "brooding" is said. It's 15 by the way.
also I noticed Zuko has a shit ton of nicknames, to name them all so far: tough guy, fire prince, ashmaker, Prince Zuko, your highness, your royal shittiness, kid, little arnaq, little shit, arrogant motherfucker, the brooding prince, the grevious bodily harm prince, Broody McBroodFace, princess, Blue Spirit, fourth best firebender in the entire Fire nation, fire princess, sneaky, prickly, tea boy, angry jerk, 'Zuko, fire nation', jerkbender.
Anyways, I think it's fitting I spent the whole first day of 2021 re-reading and analyzing every aspect of taob, hot gurl shit amirite
okay i need you to know that the moment you said you’d fucking done a whole analysis i literally bricked it because that is so terrifying and im astounded you didn’t find any mistakes or anything. i am always so paranoid that one day someone’s gonna jump in here like ‘hey hella you fucking idiot did you know that this ______ makes no sense? did you know that huh? course not because you’re thick as pig shit <3′ but alas this was actually??? really nice??? idk why
but also i fucking died at brood/brooding being said 15 times. that is at least 90% tom nook being bullies.
ALL OF ZUKO’S NICKNAMES IUGHISUHGIUDHGIU

Happy Father’s Day!!!
To celebrate, here’s some info about the only good dads in the story and their family dynamic— Tarkik’s dads, Tiguaak and Aput.
As you may or may not know, Tarkik is Team Avatar’s waterbender and healer! He’s the Prince of the Northern Water Tribe, so along with information about their family, you’ll get some updates on water tribe culture.
Their family consists of Tiguaak, Aput, Tarkik, and Dyani. The parents are Tiguaak and Aput, and their children are Tarkik and Dyani.
Tiguaak means “the adopted child” in Inuit. He was adopted by the previous tribal leaders (Chief Arnaq and her husband Panuk) as a kid, and so he decided to adopt two kids when he grew up.
There will be a sub-plot in Book 4 where Tarkik, Dyani, and a friend of theirs from the Northern Water Tribe seek out information about their biological parents, which leads to a… quite shocking discovery.
Dyani is 12 years old, while Tarkik is 17.
Tiguaak is a nonbender, and Aput is a waterbender.
Tarkik is a waterbender, while Dyani is a firebender.
As Kya II mentioned in the Legend of Korra comics, the Water Tribes’ cultures tend to be open to LGBTQ+ individuals— but prefer that people keep their identities to themselves. This still generally applies, although Korra, Eska, and Desna tried to help make society more open-minded. As a result of this, some Northern Tribe citizens are critical of Chief Tiguaak and his family due to him being a proud and openly gay man, and his son being a demiboy (partially identifying with the male identity, but also partially not). The Southern Tribe as a whole tends to be more welcoming towards LGBTQ+ people, but their current Chief is unfortunately homophobic and transphobic, which causes a lot of political disruption.
The Northern Tribe gave a name to its capital (Yuèliàng) after Princess Yue some time during Eska and Desna’s rule. This roughly translates to “moon” in Chinese (correct me if I’m wrong!)
The White Lotus formed because the Princess of the Northern Water Tribe ran away, and this took place during Avatar Yangchen’s lifetime. (The White Lotus’ origin will be explained in the story, and will be especially important in the plot of Book 4!)
The Southern Water Tribe is an important port for transportation of products. During Korra and Asami’s lifetime, several Future Industries factories were built in the South Pole. Of course, they only let ones with clean energy sources be built near the poles, as not to cause pollution issues.
The Northern Tribe has an airport called the Jingshen Airport, and the Southern Tribe has an airport called the Bingshan Airport. Jingshen roughly translates to spirits, while Bingshan roughly translates to iceberg (it was named in memory of Avatar Aang).

The Djinn Dilemma- Chapter 3
I'm so happy to be finally reaching the end of this fic! I'll be posting one chapter a day Mon-Fri until I've caught up to the newest chapters which should take until the end of the month. Then I'll begin posting the last few chapters on FN and Ao3. Thanks so much to anyone who's stuck around this long!
After a few minutes, the door of the classroom opened and Pakku looked at the newcomer with a raised eyebrow.
"Can I help you?” he drawled sarcastically.
"Sorry am I late?” replied an all too familiar voice. Zuko spun around in his seat and saw Katara standing in the doorway, looking at Professor Pakku sheepishly.  Pakku’s brow furrowed in confusion.
"Who are you?” he asked her. “You can’t be transferring into this class. The semester’s half over.” Katara laughed a little nervously.
"I guess they didn’t tell you,” she said. “I’m Katara Arnaq. I’m auditing the class.”
"You are?” Pakku looked at her, surprised. Zuko stared at her, too, but his expression was closer to dread.
"I am,” Katara said, nodding. “I’m considering transferring to this school and I got permission to sit in on a few classes to see if it’d be a good fit.”
"Don’t they usually assign you a student to shadow?”  Zuko sank lower in his seat. He knew exactly where this was going.
"Oh, they did.” Katara pointed to Zuko , who was in the middle of trying to become invisible. “Zuko and I are friends, so they said it’d be ok to shadow him today.”  Satisfied with her explanation, Pakku motioned for her to have a seat. The only free one was three rows from Zuko’s, but Katara didn’t seem to mind. She sat down and hung her jacket on the back of her seat. She glanced over at Zuko and waved at him with a cheeky grin.
What are you doing here? Zuko mouthed at her. Katara just winked and pointed to the front of the class where Pakku had gone back to writing notes on the whiteboard. He wouldn’t be able to get an explanation just then. He contented himself with a long warning glare at Katara.
Behave! he mouthed. Katara sat up straight, and looked back at him, an absolute vision of innocence, before she turned to another student sitting beside her and started chatting quietly with her.
"Miss Arnaq,” Pakku said suddenly. The frost in his voice cowed even Katara.  “While I’m sure you must have many questions for my students, I have to ask you to please not interrupt my class.”
"Sorry,” Katara said guiltily. Her cheeks were slightly red with embarrassment and she sat quietly for the rest of the class. Zuko, relieved, turned and tried not to pay attention to Katara. That turned out to be easier said than done.
After nearly fifteen minutes of relative quiet, Zuko looked down at his notebook and saw a message not written in his handwriting.
Hey!  It read. I’m bored.-K  Zuko looked over at Katara, but her head was down and she was scribbling something on a piece of paper she had gotten from someone. Zuko looked back down at the paper and saw new writing appear on the page.
Let’s get out of here! Zuko looked back at Katara, but she still wasn’t looking at him. She was staring at the paper intensely, and Zuko realized she was waiting for a response. He picked his pen up and with only a moment’s hesitation, he wrote his reply.
No. He glanced over at Katara. She still wasn’t looking up, but she was pouting at the paper. She wrote back immediately.
Come on! He’s not teaching anything that important.
No. Please leave me alone.  Katara’s head shot up at that. She looked over at Zuko with an eyebrow raised, and Zuko scribbled hastily. For the rest of class. We can talk later.  Zuko glanced back at her and Katara rolled her eyes at him, before responding.
Fine. Spoil sport.

Crimson - Niviaq Korneliussen
Rating: ★★★★☆  Pages: 192   Read: 10th Jan 2020
In Nuuk, Greenland . . . Fia breaks up with her long-term boyfriend and falls for Sara. Sara is in love with Ivik who holds a deep secret and is about to break promises. Ivik struggles with gender dysphoria as their friends become addicted to social media, listen to American pop music and get blind drunk in downtown bars and uptown house parties. Then there is Inuk, who also has something to hide - it will take him beyond his limits to madness, and question what it means to be a Greenlander, while Arnaq, the party queen, pulls the strings of manipulation, bringing a web of relationships to a shocking crescendo. Crimson weaves through restlessness, depression, love and queer experiences to tell the story of Greenlanders through a unique and challenging form. The original text was written and published in the Greenlandic language.
This book is split into 5 sections, one for each of them. I really enjoyed how this was done.
The characters are real and flawed. It’s written in a believable way and it was gripping from the start. You see how the characters interact with each other and you follow their every move and thought, including how they see the other characters.
A really insightful and thought-provoking book.
