a brief explanation and probably incomplete timeline of the batgirls bc i’ve seen a lot of people flip flop between their (mostly cass and stephs) names (i got a bit sidetracked with this.. whoops)
bette/betty kane: bat-girl, flamebird, hawkfire
the silver age batgirl. she was introduced along side kathy kane’s batwoman. these two would become kate and bette, the modern batwoman and flamebird/hawkfire
sometimes her run is mentioned, sometimes not, other times it’s a passing joke
young justice 1998 #21
she becomes flamebird and joins teen titans (titans west) for a bit. she sticks around as flamebird until kate kane's batwoman run (batwoman 2011)
kate trains her as plebe
batwoman (2011) #1
and then she becomes hawkfire under the DEO
batwoman (2011) #16, #17
i think dc forgot abt her lowkey
barbara gordon: batgirl, oracle
probably the batgirl you think of when you hear batgirl. she took bette’s place in 1967 and is still somehow stuck in the roll.
secret origins 1986 #20
she gets shot in the killing joke (1988), paralyzing her and leading her to become oracle.

batman chronicles #5
she goes back to batgirl around the n52, along with her own solo (batgirl 2011) and being sometimes batgirl sometimes oracle in batgirls 2022 which seems to be the grey area she’s still stuck in. (with her being batgirl in some of the modern nightwing stuff, but sometimes filling the oracle roll in dc and batman)
helena bertinelli: huntress, batgirl/the bat
she names herself batgirl (or more realistically The bat) during no mans land while bruce was gone. gotham needed a bat.

batman: shadow of the bat #83
however bruce does come back eventually. and lets her stick around but still doesnt fully trust her.
detective comics #732
barbara was actually unaware of it at first and has a very reasonable crash out bc ok bruce

batman: legends of the dark knight #120
she didn’t last long as batgirl, he takes her suit and gives it to cassandra in the same issue.
cassandra cain: batgirl, black bat, orphan, kasumi
takes over after helena and sticks around as batgirl until 2009

batman: legends of the dark knight #120
she mostly stays as batgirl during her run, except for a small run she had undercover in justice league: elite as an assassin named Kasumi. it falls right before war games in the timeline. during the bruce is dead era cass gives her suit to stephanie and she becomes batgirl. (same suit passed down from helena to cass to steph lmao. poor steph.)

batgirl 2009 #1
its in this era where the whole “cass in hong kong” bit starts up. shes there for a good chunk of the batgirl/red robin 2009 era.

red robin #17
at first she's there unnamed, and then taking on the black bat name during batman incorporated before she shows up again in red robin with that name.
batman incorporated #6
she doesnt stay black bat for too long, taking up the name orphan in batman and robin eternal (taking the name from david. for some reason).
batman and robin eternal #26
she was orphan for the rebirth era until she takes up the batgirl mantle again for batgirls 22 along with stephanie and barbara.
stephanie brown: spoiler, robin, batgirl
famously takes up the name spoiler to spoil her fathers crimes
detective comics #647
she stays as spoiler until around 2004 when war drums/war games happen and she takes up the robin mantle after tim retires.
robin 1993 #126
war games happens, she dies, comes back, and its revealed she didnt actually die!! leslie thompkins actually helped fake her death and she was in africa for a bit,,, but she is back to being spoiler after being fired and almost killed!
her relationship with the rest of the batfam is mostly strained during this time; tim, barbara and dick constantly telling her to get out of the line of duty however cass still entrusts her with her batgirl suit and the title. (batgirl 2009 #1)
batgirl 2009 #4
it would take her 4 issues to get her own suit tho. babs was very unsure of working with stephanie again esp with how she had died/almost died last time.
she stays batgirl until the n52, and then is back to spoiler during rebirth.
she stays as spoiler until joker war where both she and cass take the batgirl name again (batgirls 2022)
honourable mentions:
charlie gage radcliffe
birds of prey 1999 #99
a meta who called herself batgirl because "gotham needs a batgirl". she knows the identity of the birds of prey, calling them all by their first name. babs tries to keep her from being a vigilante by showing her images from stephanie's death in war games to which she listens. saying that she'll at least drop the batgirl mantle. so.
tiffany fox
batgirl: futures end
part of a ... league of batgirls? with stephanie and cassandra? while... babs is dosed with? bane venom>???? and becomes bête noire (the black beast).... ok. tbh tiffany as batgirl is the only good thing abt this comic
harley quinn
harley quinn 2000 #10
theres some contract on harley and ignoring the easier way of her just skipping town, she becomes batgirl!
if you ignore weird comments she makes towards tim its a pretty fun comic with some good interactions between tim, cass, dick and babs. esp since its with a cass pretty early in her batgirl run. its only issues 10 and 11 :P
anyway hope yall enjoyed :3
#i probably missed stuff but hashtag whatevs#bette kane#barbara gordon#helena bertinelli#cassandra cain#stephanie brown#charlie gage radcliffe#harley quinn#tiffany fox#batgirl#dc comics#birds of prey#batman#ash’s ramblings#long post#mb yall

Hiii, I don't really know if you made a post about this or not, but can I ask what you think of damian and dick's relationship? you have a really deep insight on the bat family's relationship, so I'm curious on how you would describe those two
Damian and Dick are probably the most important to each other in the family with the other being each other's most favorite person in the world. Dick is Damian's father, brother, mentor, and best friend. Actually it's reflective of Dick's relationship with Bruce but none of the toxic expectations and brute force of misplaced responsibilities.
Dick is loving and understanding of Damian and he's able to read him before Damian can even express his words.
For example, when the Black Lantern things open the caskets of Martha and Thomas Wayne, Dick asks Damian to help him wrap up the bodies but-
Blackest Night: Batman Issue #1
He's able to anticipate and take care of Damian before Damian can even tell him what he's thinking. That's the level of love and understanding Dick has of him.
Damian is insanely protective over Dick. When Deadman, Boston Brand, jumps into Dick, Damian gets super protective of his Batman.
Blackest Night: Batman Issue #1
Also Dick CANNOT STAND IT when someone hurts or insults Damian.
Blackest Night: Batman Issue #1
Honestly I think Dick loves Damian's sass. Even when he says he wants to kill people Dick's just like, "not today another day kiddo" which is just super heartwarming when you hear their banter.
Anyways, Dick and Damian have the funniest back and forth!
Batman and Robin (2009) Issue #21
Damian values each and every word of Dick's.
Batman: Streets of Gotham Issue #1
While Damian respects Batman for what he created and wants to be appreciated as his son, Damian just loves Dick for who he is. I know some people think Bruce may be jealous of Dick and Damian's relationship, and while it's possible, I think Bruce is just super proud and happy. His greatest joy in life comes from Dick succeeding and he would have found it weird if Dick and Damian didn't get along because he inherently believes that Dick is the peak of goodness.
What I love most about Dick and Damian is that Damian is always shown as a loveable kid when he's with Dick. In the Batman and Robin (2011) comics with Bruce and Damian vs the Batman and Robin (2009) comics with Dick and Damian, Damian is much softer. Part of this comes from Bruce's refusal to treat him as robin originally, but their interactions are more stilted than the easy-going and funny ones between Damian and his big brother. But here's where it gets interesting. The writers write the characters in terms of how they would react to each other. What perception they would have of each other. So subconsciously the writers are creating the characters based on how they look at each other - meaning, Dick only sees Damian's good sides and finds his darker ones humorous whereas Bruce sees more of Damian's darker sides and has to rework himself to acknowledge Damian's growth.
I find that so fascinating how a character's personality in accordance with their relationships feeds back into the writer's writing rather than the writer influencing the relationships.
The most Dick has said about Damian willing to kill criminals is-
Batman: Streets of Gotham Issue #3
Another reason why Damian values Dick aside from being on the receiving end of his unconditional love is that Dick treats Damian like an equal. Dick doesn't command Damian to stay at his side at all times, he send Damian to do one task while he finishes up the other half. This indicates the amount of trust and faith he has in Robin's abilities and Damian in turn respects that.
Something that needs to be brought to attention is that just as much as Dick stops Damian from killing people, he is also his number one aiding and abetting partner.
Nightwing (2016) Issue #1
I LOVE THE MEAN LITTLE GRIN ON HIS FACE!!
My favorite part is Dick makes time for Damian just to have fun. He's a mentor and a father, but he's also the best brother someone could ask for.
Nightwing (2016) Issue #4
Honestly Gotham War Issue #138 was so confusing to me because there's just no way Damian would pander mindlessly to receive Bruce's acceptance. He literally broke from Batman to become his own person - he ran away - and suddenly he's back and begging for Bruce's love?? Even fighting over Dick is fine but the lack of connection between them?
Damian is single handedly the most important person in the world to Dick.
Damian is Dick's son.
Robin (2021) Issue #5
I find their relationship special because this is the only in his entire time life that Dick has ever given away a family momento of his own volition first. His parents and his background mean the utmost to him; he cradles the memories with longing and love. But inspite all this, he's giving away the last piece of family history. No, giving away isn't the right word. He's passing down his legacy. Damian is his son, he's literally inheriting the Grayson legacy in the way that only Dick can give. Bruce gave the kids Dick's mantle but he cannot give any of them Dick's history but Dick gave that to Damian. That's beautiful.
He straight up says it too
Nighwing (2016) Issue #20
"When your dad came back, there was a moment I thought it would be better for you if you stayed with me. As my partner. As my..." "Really?" "Yeah."
DC SAID DICK AND DAMIAN FATHER AND SON RIGHTS AS CLOSE AS THEY COULD WITHOUT TAKING AWAY BRUCE'S BLOOD CLAIM.
Damian considers Dick his father.
Nighwing (2016) Issue #18
"Finding a new life. Considering a child to replace me. I don't know what I will be...alone. I need you here, Richard."
"Considering a child to replace me. "
Damian is heartbroken at the idea that Dick will have a kid and move on.
He loves Dick so much he goes all the way to Bludhaven just because he loves and misses him after Bruce took over as Batman.
Nighwing (2016) Issue #20
Batman Incorporated (2012) Issue #8
"Are you with me Nightwing? The odds are completely against us."
"When did we ever let something like that get in the way? Robin the boy wonder, Damian."
Batman Incorporated (2012) Issue #8
"So far I'd say you've been my favorite partner. We were the best, Richard. Not matter what anyone thinks."
Robin (2021) Issue #5

Nightwing (2016) Issue #20
The world can stand against Damian but Dick will always be on his side.
Which is a problem in recent DC works because

hi kal!!
what damian wayne comics would you recommend? I’ve read a couple but I just want to know more about his character.
thanks love ❤️
Hi, love 💕💕
There's so many.. okokokok.
☆ Batman and Robin, 2009 - 2011. Outside of author and writing conflicts, this is a good basis for Damian. Snarky little shit struggling to be.. I suppose, human. Lonely boy. ( You also learn here that Talia used the Lazarus Pit on him several times when he was young. A good bit of Talia's writing was commented on and removed, however, that part is still canon! )
bonus: his interactions with dick(batman)
☆ Batman and Robin, 2011 - 2015. You can literally feel how much Damian is loved in the writing for this. Lot of growth and also one of the main relationships growths with Bruce. This set has like.. some of the best emotional depth and digging into Damian's character, imo.
bonus: this is also his death and resurrection arc.
☆ Robin: Son of Batman, 2015 - 2016. I don't care about anyone else's opinion here, I love this series. I own it in pristine condition and it makes me very soft. I love him.
bonus: goliath 🙌🏻
☆ Super Sons, 2017 - 2018. It makes me so fucking sad dc decided to say fuck this dynamic and jacked Jon right out the fucking window. But, I still like the series — probably because I just enjoy seeing them interact like actual.. idk.. kids, for a good bit. Like.. this is prime happy Damian.
bonus: basically just seeing their friendship, it's cute.
☆ Detective Comics, 2016 - 2018. This isn't emotional depth or anything of the sort but you get to see his interactions with the batfam.
bonus: ... if im not mistaken ( i probably am. ), it's within these comics that damian first calls tim his brother? ( there's also ones where tim calls him brother + step brother. )
☆ Teen Titans, 2016 - 2019. If you wanna see him be human, fuck up, look into his control issues ( not related to tim at all. ) and the fact he struggles like hell to say how he feels, especially about protecting people he cares for... this is your go to.
bonus: watching damian struggle with the concept of soft emotions.
☆ Robin, 2021. It's a pretty small run but it's got some emotional digging in it.
bonus: i'd say the style of the storyline and comic are pretty cool.
☆ The Boy Wonder, 2024. I actually just fucking love this series. He's such a moody little shit that talks like a cartoon villain. This is also a .. Black Label comic, soooo....
bonus: idk. dick and babs are together and have a kid + they treat dames like their child otl
♧ Batman and Robin, 2023 - present. I fucking hate this, lmfao. I have not recommended it to literally anyone. All of the characterization sucks actual ass through most of this. It gets on my nerves and that little bitch is v1 Tim 90% of the time. Not to mention, he literally looks like v1 Tim. I hate all of this. I keep up with info for mainline canon reasons but I actually just hate all of it and use it as a prime reason why DC needs new fucking writers who know how to hold a character how it should be. He sucks in this. I do not recommend it, for the most part. It IS a heavily Damian series, so that's the only reason I'd say it's worth looking into but again.. I read most of this as v1 Tim. ( I say, have 21, 22, and 23 on pre-order for the SOLE reason of seeing if they're going to kill him or not. )

Comments:
Dick actually took a while to warm up to Tim. They don’t interact much for the first 5 or so years, and Dick doesn’t really joke with Tim at all when they do. It isn’t until the Nightwing series that Dick starts teasing and really enjoying him.
Also, Tim is FAR to comfortable calling Dick by his first name in the beginning. Like, he totally thinks of them as best friends in his head and that isn’t healthy. He almost never thinks of Dick with any name other than his first for their entire relationship.
*FINALLY, Dick calls Tim ‘Jeff’ in one of their first encounters. This is a writer’s error - they changed Tim’s name late in the writing process - but I like imagining Dick just messed up his name. He WAS kind of distracted at the time.

Because I am insane and sleep deprived, here is my attempt to make sense of the batfamily ages and what I believe they are currently at, with full explanations. Fair warning, although I have done like, legit research and have reasonings, some of these still fit into headcanons.
Bruce - 45
Dick - 28
Babs - 30
Jason - 23
Tim - 21
Steph - 22
Cass - 23
Damian - 14
Duke - 17
Bruce is the oldest, obviously. However, when he first adopts Dick he is still young himself. Hence why along with their father-son relationship, they sorta have a brotherly relationship. (Specfically in classic comics, Bruce would often refer to him as a brother. ) I like how it complicates their relationship and how it shows he wasn't really ready to nessicarily handle a child. I like to hc that he got adopted at 8, which would make Bruce 25 when he adopted him.
It was difficult to settle on this age because the age in which Dick became Robin has been changed so many times. Originally, he was 7. New Teen Titans says he was 8. Other comics say he was 10, 12, and even 15. I feel like most people say 8, and for the sake of my own agenda, I'm saying 8, and you can not stop me.
I think 28 is a good age for Dick. Babs similarly should be around his age as they grew up together (at least in newer canon since she used to be quite a bit older.), but she's always been portrayed as older even when around her age, and to kinda account for the weirdness surrounding her age I put her as 30. She becomes Batgirl at 18, and likely becomes Oracle when she's in her 20s, probably around 23.
Batman tells Cass multiple times in Batgirl 2000 that she and Jason were the same age, so that makes it easier to rule the two together. Addiontally, Cass, Steph, and Tim are all around the same age range, Cass being the oldest, so that makes things easier too. Cass starts operating as Batgirl at 18 which would make Tim around 16 when she takes the cowl. This works since Tim became Robin at around 13 and he had been Robin for a good amount of time before Cass became Batgirl. I think it's a litttle longer than I'd like. But whatever. I was considering ignoring canon and saying he becomes Robin at 14, because I think 2 years as Robin before Cass rather than 3 is more fitting but whatever. It does fit since Tim was introduced way earlier than Cass, however real time doesn't really affect these ages. Anyways, big sister Cass supremacy I think people forget she's one of the oldest. I think she might have been de-aged to be around Tim's age but FUCK that she was originally Jason's age and this is my headcanon and I like to thing N52 didn't fuck everything up in my happy Tumblr space.
We know Steph is 1 year older than Tim because she's a freshman in college during Batgirl 2009, and he's a high-school dropout in Red Robin 2009 as he searches for Bruce. Stephanie becomes Spoiler at 15, and Robin at 16. She comes back when she's around 17-18. This lands our 2000s trio with ages at 23(Cass), 22(Steph), and 21(Tim).
Jason is a mess. At least I thought he would be, but it actually turned out kinda perfect. We know Jason and Cass are the same age, so he's at 23 with her. He becomes Robin at 12, and dies at 15. He comes back as Red Hood at 18 and was dead for around 3 years. Jason Todd is 18 when he comes back to life because right before War Games, Bruce takes Cass to Jason's grave, on his 18th birthday!!! and of course the event that acts as a sort of aftermath to War Games is Under the Red Hood so Jason is 18 when he first becomes Red Hood. Cass is still a fairly new character when UTRH happens, so i think her being 18-19 when he comes back fits well. Tim being around 16 kinda fits nice too as hes around the same age as Jason when he died. I think Steph being so close in age also helps since so many parallels are drawn between the two.

Detective Comics #790
Duke is still a teenager, and he is regarded to be one of the youngest bats, but still quite a bit older than Damian. In We are Robin, Duke is 16, as shown in the who are the robins bonus art. He is still a newer character and hasn't been Signal for long. I assume that by the time Batman and the Signal rolls around, he's 17 and is still currently 17.

We are Robin #4
I'm pretty sure Damian was 14 in Robin (2021) but I could be wrong it's been a while since I've read it and I never finished it so idk if he ever aged since then. He became Robin at 10, so in those 4 years, he's obviously grown and matured a lot, but I mean, who doesn't those are formative years. I was gonna bump him up to 15. However, this doesn't work. He is supposed to be 10 while Tim is 17. (Babs says he's ten during Batgirl 2009, and we established Tim is 17 during this.) To keep it consistent with the others, I'm keeping Damian at 14.

Batgirl 2009 #17
Feel free to correct anything I said here if it's incorrect. I am not perfect nor all-knowing. Also I'm horrible with math and numbers so I probably fucked something up here so feel free to make fun of me for that. Or you can make fun of the issues I have below.
Issues :
Dick can't be Robin at 8 if I stick with these ages because that would mean at the time Tim is 1 which means he wouldn't even be able to remember the show which means he would never be Robin.
I would've liked Bruce to be a little younger when first taking Dick in, but also I think Bruce is at his best when he's a middle aged man and I didn't want him to be below 45 because I wanted him to be on his late 40's.
It's hard to characterized Duke after We Are Robin because he's supposed to he a teenager, however he was 16 in We Are Robin and it feels like he should have been Signal for a bit longer than that. This isn't as big of a deal, because I still think it's believable for him to have only been signal for about a year, and it's mainly just DC inconsistency, but it still bugs me.
Damian's entire age is sorta messy and there's definitely issues with it lol.
I think Cass' age is around the same as Tim's post 52 to fit with him since their the same generation. But i chose to ignore that, and you can't stop me I choose what canon I want.
ヽ(o´3`o)ノ
Anyways, if you've read all of this, I fear you might be a little crazy. However, thank you!!!!!! Feel free to like leave your own opinion/headcanons. I LOVE hearing them. Thank you! Bye!

15 and 21?
asks
15. that one thing you see in fanart all the time
i wish i could personally speak to every fanartist and tell them that just because a character is oversexualized in comics doesnt mean that they have to be oversexualized in fanart. i see it a lot with talia where she has an outfit in the comics with cutouts everywhere and poses to show her tits, and then people will make art of said outfit and make it just as sexual and like... it was bad enough that she did that in canon but you can simply choose to not! put her in a warm sweater or something she doesnt always have to be a sneeze away from a nip slip
21. part of canon you think is overhyped
batman & robin :( both the 2009 and 2011 run. i really want to like it bc i like seeing damian as robin :( i like batman dick and robin damian but b&r 2009 was not good. the plots were lame and forgettable and the characterization was okay at best. and the 2011 run was just so boring that i dropped it halfway through. neither of them are BAD but i see people talk about them sometimes and say that theyre both really good and i simply do not agree
